Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
A novel dual S-scheme Co9S8/MnCdS/Co3O4 heterojunction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation

Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of a unique heterojunction photocatalyst structure is an important strategy to enhance its performance and structural stability. Herein, Co9S8/MnCdS/Co3O4 photocatalysts with double S-scheme heterojunctions were successfully prepared by coupling Co9S8 and Co3O4 sheet structures with n-type MnCdS nanoparticles through a simple solvothermal and mechanical mixing method. The construction of the dual S-scheme heterostructure offers the possibility to expand the light absorption range, extend the carrier lifetime and maximise the redox capacity. In addition, the mechanism of charge transfer and the reason for the improvement of photocatalytic activity were explored through photoelectrochemical characterization. The lamellar structures of Co9S8 and Co3O4 not only provide excellent dispersion and slow down the agglomeration of MnCdS nanoparticles, but also promote charge transfer, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen production effect. Under simulated solar irradiation, the evolution rate of H2 after 5 h was as high as 46.44 μmol, which was 3.49 and 1.49 times higher than those of pristine MnCdS and MnCdS/Co3O4, respectively. Meanwhile, it has good stability under 20 h irradiation. This work demonstrates a novel idea for the rational design of double S-scheme photocatalysts with efficient space separation.

Abstract:This study aimed to regulate the band structure and enhance the reduction ability of CdS by substituting it with Mn2+. Subsequently, this nano MnCdS solid solution was anchored on the surface of truncated octahedral Cu2O through a simple hydrothermal process, forming an S-scheme heterojunction at the interface between MnCdS and Cu2O. Equilibrating the Fermi level at the MnCdS/Cu2O heterojunction led to spontaneous diffusion of electrons in MnCdS to Cu2O, generating an internal electric field that drove the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of Cu2O and holes in the valence band (VB) of MnCdS. Consequently, this process preserved the powerful photogenerated electrons in the CB of MnCdS, facilitating robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The MnCdS/Cu2O exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 66.3 mmol g−1 h−1, which was 3.4- and 54.3-times higher than that of MnCdS (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and Cu2O (1.2 mmol g−1 h−1), respectively. This study elucidates advanced S-scheme heterojunction catalyst architectures for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Effective charge separation and migration pose a critical challenge in the field of solar-driven hydrogen production. In this work, a Z-scheme structured CuInS2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction was successfully fabricated through a two-step hydrothermal synthesis method to significantly enhance the efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion. Structural characterization revealed that the lattice-matched CuInS2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction exhibits an enlarged interfacial contact area, which facilitates the transfer and separation of photogenerated charges. Microscopic analysis indicated that the CuInS2/ZnIn2S4 composite material has a tightly interwoven interface and a morphology resembling small sugar cubes. Photoelectrochemical spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the heterojunction structure effectively enhances visible light absorption and charge separation efficiency, leading to an improvement in photocatalytic activity. Hydrogen production experimental data indicated that the CuInS2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction photocatalyst prepared with a CuInS2 content of 20 wt% exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate, reaching 284.9 μmol·g−1·h−1. Moreover, this photocatalyst maintains robust photocatalytic stability even after three consecutive usage cycles. This study demonstrated that the Z-scheme CuInS2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits enhanced hydrogen evolution efficiency, offering an effective structural design for harnessing solar energy to obtain hydrogen fuel. Therefore, this heterojunction photocatalyst is a promising candidate for practical applications in solar hydrogen production.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has great potential for the utilization of solar energy, which depends on the design and preparation of an efficient photocatalyst. The recent design of S-scheme heterojunction is expected to enhance the redox ability and accelerate electron separation and migration. To further promote the charge transfer and broaden light absorption in the heterostructure, we proposed a strategic merging with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. In this work, the (C and O) co-doped g-C3N4 (COCN) was in-situ combined with W18O49 to construct the S-scheme heterojunction termed COCN-W18O49. Co-doping of C and O atoms leads to a change in the band structure of COCN, the formation of surface defects, and an enhancement in carriers concentration. The W18O49 possesses plentiful W5+ defects and oxygen vacancies, which can produce hot electrons to accelerate the separation of carriers and broaden the wavelength range of light absorption by the SPR effect. Furthermore, the S-scheme heterojunction effectively utilizes the reduction and oxidation units of COCN and W18O49, respectively, and the presence of an internal electric field with direction from COCN to W18O49 accelerates electron transfer. As a result, the novel S-scheme COCN-W18O49 heterojunction can achieve a superior photocatalytic degradation performance that is 4.25 times as high as GCN, 2.3 times as high as COCN, and 1.6 times as high as W18O49. At the same time, the hydrogen evolution performance of the COCN-W18O49 composite was also 11.9 times as high as GCN and 1.8 times as high as COCN, while W18O49 was unable to hydrogen evolution. This work provides a new pathway for designing S-scheme heterojunction with swift interfacial electron flows, which has great potential for hydrogen evolution and wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:Heterojunction photocatalysts have shown their immense capability in enhancing photogenerated charge carrier separation. Yet, the intrinsic scarcity of active sites in semiconductor components of heterojunction photocatalysts limits their potential for photocatalysis being used in practical applications. Herein, we employ a non-noble metal cocatalyst (i.e., NiS) for modulating a S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst consisting of Cd-3(C3N3S3)(2) (CdCNS) and CdS. It is revealed that the formation of the CdCNS/CdS S-scheme heterojunction can enable optimal photogenerated charge carrier utilization efficiency and optimized redox capability. More importantly, the meticulous loading of NiS can play multiple roles in enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the CdCNS/CdS photocatalyst, including endowing it with abundant surface-active sites and acting as a photogenerated electron acceptor. As a result, the optimized NiS-loaded CdCNS/CdS attains an excellent hydrogen production rate of 38.17 mmol g(-1) h(-1), to reach a quantum efficiency of 29.02% at 420 nm. The results reported in this work provide an interesting insight into the important roles of surface-active site modulation in optimizing photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:Rational design of composite catalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer and good light collection ability is of great significance to achieve high photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency. In this paper, a Co9S8/MoS2/Ni2P dual S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a simple sulfidation and hydrothermal method. The optimized Co9S8/MoS2/Ni2P composite with hierarchical structure, large surface area and numerous reactive active sites showed a good photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 5.69 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 2.28, 4.12 and 10.74 times higher than that of pure Co9S8, MoS2 and Ni2P, respectively. A combination of time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, valence band XPS (VB-XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirms that the formation of the Co9S8/MoS2/Ni2P double S-scheme greatly facilitates charge migration and spatial separation, and improves the oxidation and reduction ability. This work will provide insights into the development of PBA-based dual S-scheme heterojunction catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Herein, the S‐scheme CuO/CdS heterojunction photocatalyst is prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. Through electrochemistry, electron spin resonance, and UV photoelectron spectroscopy, it is found that the electrons in CuO enter CdS according to the S‐type charge transfer mechanism. This results in the production of CO from CdS as the active site and enhances photocatalytic activity. The CO yield of 50%–CuO/CdS is the highest at 152.16 μmol g−1. Then, based on in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the possible photocatalytic reaction pathways are briefly speculated. In summary, the S‐scheme heterostructure accelerates the photocatalytic reaction kinetics of 50%–CuO/CdS, thereby improving its photocatalytic activity, thus improving its photocatalytic activity. The construction of S‐scheme heterojunctions has been widely used in photocatalytic reduction of CO2, and their interfacial charge transfer separation plays an important role. Herein, an S‐scheme CuO/CdS heterojunction has been designed and fabricated by a simple water bath method. Its excellent photocatalytic activity is achieved by the in situ growth of CdS particles on a CuO lamellar structure, a composite structure that provides a large number of active sites and improves CO2 absorption, resulting in a catalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity. The CO yield of the optimized sample can reach 152.16 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 7 and 10 times higher than that of CuO and CdS, respectively. In addition, electron spin resonance, UV photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to investigate the possible charge transfer mechanism, and the present study may provide effective insights into the design of S‐scheme heterojunction catalysts.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient photocatalyst is an important aspect of photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this study, a highly efficient and stable composite photocatalyst was synthesized by assembling ZnCdS nanoparticles and CoWO 4 nanoparticles. Under the 5 W LED lamp, the hydrogen production of the composite catalyst ZCS/CW-10 is as high as 839.85 μmol in five hours, which is 5.2 times that of the pure ZnCdS photocatalyst, respectively. After four cycles, the hydrogen production still reaches 640.37 μmol, which is 76.3% of the initial activity. This is because the introduction of CoWO 4 increases the absorption of visible light by ZnCdS, and effective interface contact with each other between nanoparticles can effectively accelerate the transfer of photo generated charges between semiconductors, increase the active sites of surface hydrogen production, and achieve efficient H 2 production. The staggered band structure makes ZnCdS and CoWO 4 follow the electron flow scheme of S-scheme heterojunction, which is proved by in-situ XPS. The S-scheme heterostructure of ZCS/CW retains high redox potential and prolongate the lifetime of electron-generated carriers, making it more conducive to proton reduction to produce H 2 . This work provides a novel and convenient way to construct an efficient S-scheme heterojunction scheme, which is helpful for the rapid and effective production of metal sulfide-based photocatalysts and the rapid construction of photocatalytic water splitting hydrogen production systems. It has important research value in the utilization of new energy hydrogen energy and environmental protection.

Abstract:The rational design and modification of heterojunction photocatalysts aimed at achieving fast charge transport and efficient photocatalytic performance is a central goal of solar-light-driven water splitting and hydrogen evolution, yet this remains a challenge. Herein, we prepare a hierarchical photocatalyst composed of a few-layer violet phosphorene (VP), cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles (NPs), and Pd single atoms (SAs) by a facile one-step ball-milling strategy. The underlying VP/CdS p–n heterojunctions are verified to adopt S-scheme directional charge transfer by combining in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. The atomically dispersed Pd sites of the low-valence state coupled with the VP/CdS S-scheme heterojunctions synergistically achieve ultrafast electron transport (2.2 ps), in which the interfacial Pd–S and Pd–P bonds serve as electron transfer channels. In addition, density-functional theory calculations reveal the key role of Pd atoms in the enhancement of light-harvesting capacity and optimization of proton adsorption thermodynamics. A visible-light hydrogen production rate of 82.5 mmol h–1 g–1 is attained by an optimal 1 wt % Pd–5 wt % VP/CdS photocatalyst, which manifests a 54-fold increase with respect to that of CdS NPs, in addition to an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 25.7% at 420 nm. This work showcases a valid combination of S-scheme heterojunctions and SAs for efficient charge separation promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and others.

Abstract:ZnCdS quantum dots (QDs) are highly coveted in photocatalysis research for their exceptional visible-light responses and high light-absorption coefficients. However, their practical application is hindered by their tendency to aggregate, due to having high surface energies. To address this issue, herein, a heterostructure is synthesized by growing ZnCdS QDs with a size of approximately 5 nm onto the surface of a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF), TpPa-1-COF. This approach suppresses the aggregation of the QDs and improves their stability. The ZnCdS/TpPa-1-COF composite exhibited a peak hydrogen evolution rate of 6244.16 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 2.89 and 4.18 times greater than that of ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF, respectively. The zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterojunction formed by ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF generates a strong interfacial force, which is attributed to the intimate contact between the interfaces. Tight connections accelerate charge separation, improve the utilisation of reduced electrons, and reduce the extent of agglomeration of the ZnCdS QDs, thereby resulting in high hydrogen production activity of the composites. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic mechanism is studied using Kelvin probe force microscopy and theoretical calculations. This study offers a novel approach for creating sulfide photocatalysts and is crucial for investigating the potential practical applications of the related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and stable water-splitting photocatalysts is critical for realizing conversion solar energy into hydrogen energy. Herein, a unique 2D/2D S-scheme Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 heterojunction with sulfur vacancies was rationally designed by chemically converting inorganic–organic hybrid ZnS(en)0.5 into inorganic Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanosheets and fabricating with CuInS2 at 350 °C under an N2 atmosphere. The final Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 photocatalyst was composed of thin nanosheets with a substantial interfacial contact area, which enhanced light absorption and allowed directional charge transfer and separation. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic H2 evolution activities of Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanosheets is 0.79 mmol·g−1·h−1, which is greater than other solid solution materials obtained by varying Cd and Zn ratios. The 2D/2D nanosheets with 8% CuInS2 exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution activity with yields of 7.73 mmol·g−1·h−1, which are 9.8 and 138 times higher than Cd0.5Zn0.5S and CuInS2. In addition, Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 photocatalyst demonstrates outstanding stability and activity over the course of 24-hour period. Moreover, the transfer pathway of photogenerated charges were explored by the energy band bending, which proved that an S-scheme heterojunction is synthesized successfully.This work offers a useful methodology for analyzing S-scheme heterojunction with abundant sulfur vacancies, and improving the solar hydrogen evolution performance of Cd0.5Zn0.5S photocatalyst.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Whereas research has indicated that children with Down syndrome (DS) imitate demonstrated actions over short delays, it is presently unknown whether children with DS recall information over lengthy delays at levels comparable with typically developing (TD) children matched on developmental age. METHOD In the present research, 10 children with DS and 10 TD children participated in a two-session study to examine basic processes associated with hippocampus-dependent recall memory. At the first session, the researcher demonstrated how to complete a three-step action sequence with novel stimuli; immediate imitation was permitted as an index of encoding. At the second session, recall memory was assessed for previously modelled sequences; children were also presented with two novel three-step control sequences. RESULTS The results indicated that group differences were not apparent in the encoding of the events or the forgetting of information over time. Group differences were also not observed when considering the recall of individual target actions at the 1-month delay, although TD children produced more target actions overall at the second session relative to children with DS. Group differences were found when considering memory for temporal order information, such that TD children evidenced recall relative to novel control sequences, whereas children with DS did not. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that children with DS may have difficulty with mnemonic processes associated with consolidation/storage and/or retrieval processes relative to TD children.
One-step direct construction of S-scheme BaTi2O5/g-C3N4 heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

However, the major challenge in developing high-performing heterojunction photocatalytic systems lies in achieving efficient transfer of electrons between the components. Herein, a novel S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was developed by combining BaTi 2 O5 nanorods with g-C 3 N 4 lamellae. The preferential deposition of Pt nanoparticles as cocatalyst via the one-step impregnation-reduction method on g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets with enhanced interfacial contact and strong electronic interaction has been proved essential for the photocatalytic performance. The developed Pti mp /20BaTi 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst delivers the optimal hydrogen production rate of 2587 μmol g −1 h −1 with high stability after cycles. Photoelectrochemical analysis and theoretical calculation suggest that the formation of BaTi 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction results in the staggered band alignment and improved charge carrier dynamics. This work highlights the importance and feasibility of promoting photocatalysis by a new S-scheme heterojunction with viable cocatalysts.

Abstract:The ZnIn2S4/CdS/PdS heterostructure is designed via the confinement effect for the first time. The S‐scheme heterostructure is confirmed by in situ irradiated XPS and EPR. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS/PdS sample exhibits a high H2 production rate (19.1 mmol g−1 h−1) and AQE (26.26%). It is facing a tremendous challenge to develop the desirable hybrids for photocatalytic H2 generation by integrating the advantages of a single semiconductor. Herein, an all‐sulfide ZnIn2S4/CdS/PdS heterojunction is constructed for the first time, where CdS and PdS nanoparticles anchor in the spaces of ZnIn2S4 micro‐flowers due to the confinement effects. The morphology engineering can guarantee rapid charge transfer owing to the short carrier migration distances and the luxuriant reactive sites provided by ZnIn2S4. The S‐scheme mechanism between ZnIn2S4 and CdS assisted by PdS cocatalyst is testified by in situ irradiated X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), where the electrons and holes move in reverse driven by work function difference and built‐in electric field at the interfaces. The optimal ZnIn2S4/CdS/PdS performs a glaring photocatalytic activity of 191.9 μmol h−1 (10 mg of catalyst), and the largest AQE (apparent quantum efficiency) can reach a high value of 26.26%. This work may afford progressive tactics to design multifunctional photocatalysts.

Abstract:The photocatalytic conversion of solar energy to hydrogen is a promising pathway toward clean fuel production, yet it requires advancement to meet industrial-scale demands. This study demonstrates that the interface engineering of heterojunctions is a viable strategy to enhance the photocatalytic performance of CuInS2/Mo2S3. Specifically, CuInS2 nanoparticles are incorporated into Mo2S3 nanospheres via a wet impregnation technique to form an S-scheme heterojunction. This configuration facilitates directional electron transfer, optimizing electron utilization and fostering efficient photocatalytic processes. The presence of an S-scheme heterojunction in CuInS2/Mo2S3 is corroborated by in situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory analyses, which confirm the directional movement of electrons at the interface of heterojunction. Comprehensive characterization of the heterojunction photocatalyst, including phase, structural, and photoelectric property assessments, reveals a significant specific surface area and light absorption capability. These attributes augment the number of active sites available in CuInS2/Mo2S3 for proton reduction reactions. This study offers a pragmatic approach for designing metal sulfide-based photocatalysts via strategic interface engineering, potentially advancing the field toward sustainable hydrogen production.
Constructing Direct Z‐Scheme Heterostructure by Enwrapping ZnIn2S4 on CdS Hollow Cube for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Abstract:The stable composite photocatalyst integrated by ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS exhibits outstanding visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic H2 generation activity, due to that: i) the Z‐scheme charge transfer route facilitates charge separation, prolongs carrier lifetimes, and remains strong electron reduction capacity; ii) the unique cube‐in‐cube structure brings abundant active sites, improves light harvesting ability, shortens charge transfer distance. Rational design hybrid nanostructure photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer, and good solar light harvesting ability have critical significance for achieving high solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency. Here a highly active and stable composite photocatalyst is reported by integrating ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS cube to form the cube‐in‐cube structure. Experimental results combined with density functional theory calculations confirm that the Z‐scheme ZnIn2S4/CdS heterojunction is formed, which highly boosts the charge separation and transfer under the local‐electric‐field at semiconductor/semiconductor interface, and thus prolongs their lifetimes. Moreover, such a structure affords the highly enhanced light‐harvesting property. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS nanohybrids exhibit superior H2 generation rate under visible‐light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) with excellent photochemical stability during 20 h continuous operation.

Abstract:The Cu2−xS@ZnxCd1−xS (Cu2−xS@ZnCdS) heterojunction with a unique core@shell hollow nanobox structure is successfully synthesized, exhibiting high photocatalytic activity and excellent stability in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under visible light irradiation. It is attributed to the formation of strong interfacial electric fields (IEF), enhanced mulreflection light utilization, and Z‐scheme charge transfer pathway. The in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements give the direct evidences for the forming the Z‐scheme mechanism for enhanced photocatalytic HER activity. Achieving efficient spatial photoinduced charge separation and light utilization for improving the high photocatalytic activity is still a major obstacle. Here, a Cu2‐xS@ZnxCd1‐xS (Cu2‐xS@ZnCdS) heterojunction is reported featuring a distinctive core–shell hollow nanobox structure. The Cu2‐xS@ZnxCd1‐xS exhibits high photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the rate of 8175 μmol∙g−1∙h−1 under visible light irradiation, outperforming pristine ZnCdS nanoparticles and Cu2‐xS hollow nanoboxes. The remarkable activity and outstanding stability of Cu2‐x@ZnCdS are attributed to the development of robust interfacial electric fields, and improved light multireflection absorption efficiency as well as the Z‐scheme mechanism. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements gave the direct evidence of the formation of the Z‐scheme, which maintained the high redox potentials of each ZnCdS and Cu2‐xS. This study gives the guideline for the design of heterojunction with the Z‐scheme mechanism, leading to the high photocatalytic performance and remarkable stability.
