Abstract:Seafood is an important exposure route for mercury, especially methyl mercury (MeHg). Therefore, we quantified MeHg concentrations in 69 species of seafood including fish, crustaceans and mollusks collected from Zhoushan Islands, China. MeHg concentrations ranged from< 0.0020-0.2098 mu g/g and did not exceed the threshold limit of 1 mu g/g in all sampled species, However, MeHg concentrations significantly differed among fish species (0.0085-0.2098 mg kg(-1)), crustaceans (< 0.002-0.0221 mg kg(-1)) and mollusks (< 0.002-0.1389 mg kg(-1)). The trophic magnification factor (TMF) was determined on the basis of the trophic level (TL). The TL values for fish, crustaceans and mollusks were above 3 when the TMF values were > 1. The daily dietary intake and hazard quotient for MeHg were calculated to estimate exposure and health risk through seafood consumption by local inhabitants. The calculated HQ was lower than 1, thus indicating that the exposure was below the risk threshold of related chronic diseases. However, higher MeHg concentrations in fish species such as Scoliodon sorrakowah and Auxis thazard are concerning and may pose health risk through continuous consumption by local inhabitants.

Abstract:To assess the total daily mercury intake and main exposure sources of residents, six food groups, including marine fish, freshwater fish, poultry, livestock, vegetables, and cereals, were collected from five districts of Chengdu, China. The median concentrations of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were 12.8 and 6.94 μg kg −1 ww, respectively. Cereals (32.2%), vegetables (30.5%), and livestock (16.2%) contributed to a much larger extent to the total consumption for the participants in Chengdu. All food categories that contributed the most of THg (2.16 μg day −1 ) and MeHg 1.44 (μg day −1 ) to the daily intake in Chengdu were cereals and marine fish, respectively. The total Hazard Ratios values below 1 in this study indicate that there is no health risk associated with Hg ingestion from the consumption of these foods for the residents in Chengdu.

Significant Elevation of Human Methylmercury Exposure Induced by the Food Trade in Beijing, a Developing Megacity.

Abstract:Methylmercury (MeHg) poses health risks to humans worldwide. The investigation of a longer chain of biogeochemical MeHg transport from production to consumption than that addressed in previous studies could provide additional scientific foundation for the reduction of risks. The main objective of this study is to identify the impacts of the interregional food trade along with the age, gender and socioeconomic status of people on human MeHg exposure in a developing megacity. Based on a field investigation, sampling and measurements, we provide experimental evidence regarding the substantial displacement of human MeHg exposure from production areas to consumption areas induced by the food trade. In 2018, 20% and 64% of the exposure in Beijing originated from the international and interprovincial food trade, respectively. Meanwhile, the ingestion of fish contributed 79% to the total exposure, followed by rice (4.4%), crab (3.8%) and shrimp (2.7%), and the exposure risk in urban districts was higher than that in rural areas by a factor of 2.2. A significantly higher contribution of imported deep-sea species to exposure among young people than among older people was observed (P < 0.01**), and a larger contribution of the international food trade to the MeHg exposure risk for women of childbearing age (average: 27%) than that among other groups (average: 10%) was found. Overall, our efforts demonstrate the dramatic impact of the food trade on MeHg exposure in a developing megacity, and we suggest that MeHg-susceptible populations in China should choose indigenous fish species (e.g., hairtail, yellow croaker and carp species) rather than imported deep-sea species as their dietary protein source.

Abstract:In this study, we measured the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 620 foods collected during 2006-2015 from Zhejiang market, a municipal waste incinerator (MWI) and E-waste disassembling areas. For market retail foods, the levels of PCDD/F TEQs, PCDD/F plus dioxin-like PCB (DL-PCB) TEQs, and the concentrations of six indicator PCBs were generally below the EU ML The average TEQvalues for the 13 food groups were 42% of EU ML for PCDD/Fs and 32% for PCDD/Fs + DL-PCBs. Some foods of animal origin were close to the corresponding EU ML: pork (PCDD/F TEQ 79% of ML; PCDD/F + DL-PO TEQ 84% of ML); infant formula (90% of PCDD/F ML) and beef (96% of PCDD/F ML; PCDD/F + DL-PCB TEQ 78% of ML). The estimated dietary intake for the general population was 22.0 pgTEQ(kg body weight (bw))(-1) month(-1), which was below the standard of 70 pgTEQ(kg bw)(-1) month(-1) set by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). For the MWI and E-waste disassembling sites, high concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were measured in all foods tested. The corresponding TEQ in (1) freshwater fish, (2) chicken egg, (3) chicken meat and (4) chicken liver was (1) 1.4-fold (MWI, PCDD/F TEQ), (2) 11.2-fold (MWI,) and 1.6-fold (E-waste disassembling sites), (3) 20.7-fold and (4) 3.3-fold greater than EU ML, respectively. Considering the worst situation (highly polluted foods were consumed), the estimated dietary intake for local residents were 244 (MWI) and 240 pg TEQ (kg bw)(-1) month(-1) (E-waste disassembling sites), approximately 3.5-fold greater compared to the standard 70 pg TEQ (kg bw)(-1) month(-1) set by JECFA, indicating high risk could have been imposed on the health of local residents. Spatial Distribution and Risk Assessment of Copper in Agricultural Soils, China

Abstract:High Cu contamination in agricultural soil can cause toxicity, leading to ecological damages. Thus, we need to understand the concentration level, contaminated area, and spatial distribution of Cu in agricultural soils on a regional or national scale. This paper reviewed the studies on Cu concentrations throughout Chinese agricultural soils, based on relevant 482 published papers from 2004 to 2017. The results showed that the average Cu concentration was 29.85mg/kg, higher than its background of 22.60mg/kg, indicating that Cu has been introduced into soil from exterior sources. A large high spatial cluster was observed in southern China, including Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces, while low spatial clusters were mainly found in Chongqing and Shandong provinces. About 3.08% of the agricultural areas faced a high Cu risk, higher than the pollution rates of the whole land uses, based on the spatial distribution of Cu concentrations throughout China. The remaining areas were within the ranges of moderate and low Cu risks.
Impacts of Farmed Fish Consumption and Food Trade on Methylmercury Exposure in China.

Abstract:The global pollutant mercury (Hg), especially as methylmercury (MeHg), threatens human and ecosystem health. But major contributors of MeHg exposure to people in China remain highly debated. We developed the China Mercury Exposure Assessment (CMEA) model, which incorporates human exposure pathways for MeHg and total Hg (THg), the interregional, including international and interprovincial, food trading as well as human physiology to provide a comprehensive system that can evaluate the pathway of Hg forms to human consumers in China. Based on the CMEA model that employed the most comprehensive and recent data, we have found that the Probable Daily Intake (PDI) of MeHg for the Chinese population was 0.057 (range: 0.036–0.091 as 60% confidence interval) μg·kg−1·day−1, while that of THg was 0.35 (range: 0.22–0.55) μg·kg−1·day−1. MeHg exposure was dominated by fish intake, especially by farm-raised freshwater fish due to higher consumption of these fish. In 2011, fish intake contributed to 56% to the total MeHg exposure, followed by rice (26%). Consumption of farm-raised fish reduced human exposure to MeHg by 33%. On the other hand, interregional food trading increased MeHg exposure of the Chinese population, as a whole, by 7.6%. The international and interprovincial food trades contributed to 5.1% and 22% of MeHg intake, respectively. For the whole China, fish intake related exposure to MeHg was highest for the Eastern and Northeastern populations, while Tibetans were chronically exposed to the highest MeHg from other sources. Our findings highlight the importance of farmed fish and food trade for MeHg exposure.
Assessment of Heavy Metal Contaminated Agricultural Soils Affected by Mining in Ganzhou China

Abstract:Soil heavy metal contamination caused by mining is a significant issue in China. The site of this study is located in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province in China. 102 soil samples were collected along the Yangmeijiang River. ICP-MS was used to obtain heavy metal concentrations in the soils. Significant contamination was found in the agriculture soils adjacent to the river and near mining industries. The heavy metal concentrations were high at depths of 20 cm and 40 cm. According to geo-accumulation index Igeo, the soils were extremely polluted with Cd (Igeo = 4–7), heavily polluted with As (Igeo = 2–4), moderately to heavily polluted with Pb, Zn and Cu (Igeo = 0–4) and virtually unpolluted with Ni, Cr and Hg (Igeo = -3–1). These results may be a result of large amounts of As, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn being produced by nearby copper heap leach facilities. Based on USEPA method for health risk assessment, with ingestion being the major pathway for health risks, heavy metals pose a non-carcinogenic risk to adults (HQmax = 2.87, CRmax = 4.25 × 10-4), but pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to children (HQmax = 20, CRmax = 1.15×10-3). Overall, As, Pb and Cr pose the primary health risks for the soils in the study area.

Abstract:Definition and Pathophysiology Asthma is a reversible airways disease characterized by both smooth muscle hyperreactivity and airway inflammation. During the 1970s and early 1980s the focus was on smooth muscle constriction, and it was believed that better bronchodilators would greatly diminish our difficulties in controlling this condition. This, unfortunately, was not the case. The emphasis of therapy today has turned to airway inflammation. Lung biopsies from patients who have asthma show destruction of respiratory epithelium, basement membrane thickening, and inflammatory cellular infiltrate. Among the infiltrating cells are eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils that are called to the site of inflammation by the chemotactic products released by activated mast cells. Upon their arrival, these cells release their own products of inflammation, which amplify this immunologic response. A variety of neuropeptides also play a role, some serving to stabilize and others to destabilize the airway. One result of this airway inflammation is airways reactivity, also known as bronchial hyperresponsiveness. A common example of this scenario is the child who has allergic asthma and encounters a problematic allergen. This child has immunoglobulin E (IgE) to this allergen bound to mast cells in his or her airway. Upon exposure to the allergen, the binding of IgE and antigen triggers mast cell mediator release within minutes.
Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.

Abstract:Contamination of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic products has been a wide spread health concern. The objective of this study is to determine total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations in different species of aquatic products from major offshore farms in China, and to assess health impacts from consumption. Results showed that the concentrations of THg and MeHg ranged 5.6-328.4 ng/g (wet weight) and 4.3-303.6 ng/g (wet weight) in aquatic products, respectively, and were very variable among species and origin sources. Target hazard quotient (THQ) suggested that MeHg exposure via consumption posed high health risks to children aged 2-7 and higher income families. Residents above the age of 13 and with low income have relatively lower health risk of MeHg exposure. Health impacts on heart attacks and newborns' IQ from MeHg exposure were evaluated using dose-response relationships. Results showed that mother's consumption of aquatic products (at 6 ounce per day) may cause a loss of 0.38 IQ points for newborns. For non-pregnant, consumption of aquatic products may cause an increase rate of mortality and morbidity of heart attacks at 10.59 and 78.45 per 100,000 persons, respectively. The negative health impact of consuming seawater fish was higher than freshwater fish.

Abstract:In this paper, a total of 62,712 aquatic product samples were collected from 32 provinces of China during 2015–2017. By analyzing the spatial distributions and non-parametric tests of five heavy metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As)) in four aquatic product (fish (n = 44,353), shrimp (n = 8453), crab (n = 5367), and shellfish (n = 4539)), it was found that the concentrations of the five heavy metals in the same aquatic product are significantly different in different regions. Furthermore, we calculated daily estimated intake (EDI) of each of the five heavy metals and assessed non-cancer risk and cancer risk using target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR), respectively. The results showed that for mean exposure levels, the THQ values in four aquatic products were all below one, meaning that there was no non-carcinogenic risk. For high exposure levels, the hazard index (HI) value exceeded one in fish in North China, which means the potential non-carcinogenic risk should not be ignored. As for cadmium, most of the TR values in crab and shellfish exceed 1 × 10−4 in North China, East China, and South China. For chromium, except for Northeast China, the TR values in fish in other regions exceed 1 × 10−4; it indicated that the cancer risk caused by cadmium or chromium should not be ignored.

Abstract:Consumption of fish and aquatic products is considered to be the main pathway of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). To assess human health risk through seafood consumption in a coastal area of Guangdong Province, South China, a total of 518 seafood samples (including fish, shrimp, crabs, and mollusks) were collected from 11 coastal cities for total mercury (THg) analysis. The THg concentrations varied significantly among different seafood groups and ranged from 0.11 to 317 ng/g (with a mean of 37.2 ng/g). The THg concentrations were relatively low compared with fish from Europe and North America, and no samples exceeded the national limit recommended by the Standardization Administration of China (0.5 µg/g wet wt). The ecological functional groups and cultured styles have significant effects on THg concentrations in the fish tissue. The median of probable daily intakes (PDIs) of MeHg via seafood consumption ranged from 42.6 to 71.4 ng/kg/d for different age groups, with fish contributing the major portion (84%). The results indicated potential health risks associated with seafood consumption for the general population in the coastal area of Guangdong Province, South China. Environ. Toxicol. Levels, Temporal Trend and Health Risk Assessment of Five Heavy Metals in Fresh Vegetables Marketed in Guangdong Province of China During 2014–2017

Abstract:To systematically investigate the presence of toxic heavy metals and evaluate the potential health risks of heavy metals (HMs), the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and chromium (Cr) in a total of 4401 representative samples of highly consumed fresh vegetables sampled from 21 prefecture-level cities of Guangdong Province, China, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the analyzed vegetables, the heavy metal concentrations exceeded the maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) set by Chinese legislation were of 2.41% for Cd, 1.61% for Pb, 0.55% for As, and 0.48% for Cr. The concentrations of HMs indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in vegetable groups and regions Cd, and Pb were the major contaminants in vegetables according to the results of principal component analysis During the four-year survey, a temporary rising trend was observed in As and Cr. The results from hierarchical cluster analysis also demonstrated that the status of HMs contaminations in vegetables from various regions displayed certain changes over time. The health risks associated with the intake of these HMs via vegetable consumption were evaluated in term of estimated daily intake (EDI), and noncarcinogemc and carcinogenic risks by target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR). EDI values of each HM at both common and high consumption levels were observed to be less than the corresponding provisional tolerable daily intakes. The THQs of individual HMs and total target hazard quotients (TTHQs) were less than 1, indicating low health hazards for local residents. However, high consumption of stalk and stem vegetables, leafy vegetables, and root and tuber vegetables, and high consumption of vegetables marketed in the northern region (NR) of Guangdong Province resulted in TTHQs that approach 1 and may cause health risks to increase. The carcinogenic risks (CRs) of Cd, Pb and As were below the threshold level (10(-6)) or residual level (10(-4)), suggesting low potential CR from these HM exposures via vegetables consumption. However, highly consumed vegetable categories with high Cd concentrations and vegetables marketed in NR resulted in the CRs of Cd and TCRs exceeding the acceptable range, indicating that serious potential carcinogenic risks to human health may exist. In summary, the findings of this study reveal safe exposures of HMs via vegetable consumption, however, great concern should be focused on the noncarcinogemc and carcinogenic risks associated with high exposures of HMs, especially Cd, Pb and As, via high vegetable intake. Status of mercury accumulation in agricultural soil across China: Spatial distribution, temporal trend, influencing factor and risk assessment.

Abstract:Given its wide distribution in the natural environment and global transport potential, mercury (Hg) is regarded as a ubiquitous pollutant. In this study, we carried out nation-wide sampling campaigns across China to investigate the distribution of Hg in agricultural soils. Concentrations of Hg in the soils collected in 2011 and 2016 ranged from 0.04 to 0.69 and 0.06–0.78 mg kg−1, respectively. Based on the data from 2016, the reserve of Hg in the surface arable soils (0–20 cm) in China was 4.1 × 104 metric tons and Chinese cultivated soils accounted for 63.4–364 metric tons of Hg released to the global atmosphere. The soil Hg concentrations were significantly higher than the reference background level, highlighting the impacts of anthropogenic activities. The vertical distribution pattern showed a clear enrichment at the surface and a decrease with depth of the soils. Comparison of calculated geo-accumulation indexes among individual provinces showed that Northwest China had higher levels of Hg contamination than other regions of China, likely due to long-term energy related combustions in the area. Soil Hg level showed strong positive correlations with organic matter contents of soil, as well as the mean annual precipitation and temperature of the sampling locations. The non-carcinogenic human health risks of soil Hg were below the threshold level, but the general risk to the ecosystem was considerable. The increases in Hg accumulation from 2011 to 2016 at provincial level were found to relate to coal combustion, power generation and per capita GDP. This examination of energy consumption and socioeconomic drivers for China's soil Hg reserve increase is critical for direct Hg control by guiding policy-making and targets of technology development in era of rapid economic growth.

Abstract:This study investigated total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) contamination in a major production center of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) located in Gaohong, Zhejiang Province, China. This was a result of the growing concern associated with the release of mercury into the environment from such components. The results of the study included the following mean concentrations for THg and MeHg of 157 +/- 11 (61-518) ng/g dw and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (0.07-0.67) ng/g dw in agricultural soil, respectively, and 18.6 +/- 6.5 (3.2-47.8) ng/g ww and 0.11 +/- 0.03 (0.02-0.37) ng/g ww in vegetable samples, respectively. A significant correlation was observed between THg in vegetables and corresponding soil samples (r = 0.64, p < 0.01). THg and MeHg in sediment samples had respective concentrations ranging from 28 to 1019 ng/g dw and 0.11 to 3.15 ng/g dw. Mud skipper bought from the local market contained the highest Hg (THg: 170 +/- 45 ng/g ww, MeHg: 143 +/- 37 ng/g ww) amongst all fish species (THg: 14-170; MeHg: 11-143 ng/g ww) of the study. The risk assessment indicated that fish consumption should not result in a MeHg EDI exceeding the RfD (0.1 mu g/kg bw/d) for both adults and children, when MeHg bioaccessibility is taken into account. Accumulation and risk assessment of mercury in soil as influenced by mercury mining/smelting in Tongren, Southwest China

Abstract:To investigate the influence of mercury (Hg) mining/smelting on the surrounding soil environment, ninety soil samples were collected around Hg mining/smelting areas in Tongren city, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. The total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), bioavailability and fractions of Hg in the soil and their potential risk were evaluated. The results showed that Hg mining/smelting significantly increased the soil pH and decreased the soil organic matter content ( p < 0.05). The THg content in the surrounding soil was much higher than that at the control site, with almost all the samples exceeding the national standard in China (3.4 mg/kg, GB15618-2018). Similarly, the concentrations of MeHg (0.09–2.74 μg/kg) and bioavailable Hg (0.64–62.94 μg/kg) in these soil samples were also significantly higher than those in the control site. However, the MeHg/THg ratio was significantly lower in mining/smelting influenced soils (0.01–0.68%) than in control soils (0.60–3.72%). Fraction analysis revealed that residual (RES-Hg) and organic matter-bounded (OM-Hg) Hg accounted for more than 50% of the THg. Ecological risk assessment revealed that the potential ecological risk for most of the Hg mining/smelting-influenced soils (30.16 ≤ E r ≤ 2280.02) were higher than those at the control site (15.12 ≤ E r ≤ 27.1). In addition, these Hg mining/smelting-influenced soils posed acceptable noncarcinogenic risks to adults (except for two soil samples), with hazard indices (HIs) ranging from 0.04 to 1.11 and a mean HI of 0.44. However, children suffer serious noncarcinogenic risks, with HIs ranging from 0.34 to 7.43 and a mean HI of 3.10.

Abstract:Residual levels and accumulation characteristics of six hazardous heavy metal elements (As, Cd, Hg, Tl, Pb, and U) and seven essential heavy metal elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Se) were investigated in 17 kinds of frequently consumed foodstuffs collected from 33 cities distributed in five regions of China. The concentrations of the detected metals were lower than the maximum limits promulgated by the Chinese government except Pb and inorganic As (iAs). Foods of aquatic origin and terrestrial plant origin exhibited high potentials to accumulate heavy metals, especially algae and shellfish. The calculated hazard index (HI) of heavy metal exposure via consumption of foodstuffs were 2.93–5.01 for adults in the five surveyed region, implying the co-exposure of heavy metals via food consumption would lead to potential non-carcinogenic risks. iAs was the predominant contributor to HI values with the average contribution of 40.5% in all five regions. Consumption of terrestrial plant origin foods contributed 76.9% of HI values induced by heavy metal exposure. The calculated target cancer risks of iAs in the five regions were 5 × 10−4–1 × 10−3, all exceeding the acceptable level of 10−4, indicating it is necessary and urgent to reduce the contamination of iAs in foodstuffs on the Chinese markets.

Abstract:Human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) from consuming contaminated fish has been a major concern for decades. Besides, human MeHg exposure through rice consumption has been recently found to be important in some Asian countries. China is the largest country on mercury (Hg) production, consumption, and anthropogenic emission. However, the health risks of human Hg exposure are not fully understood. A total of 624 fish, 299 rice, and 994 human hair samples were collected from typical Hg-contaminated areas and major fish-rich areas to assess the health risks from human Hg exposure in China. Fish and rice samples showed relatively low Hg levels, except the rice in the Wanshan Hg mining area (WMMA). Human hair total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations were significantly elevated in WMMA, Zhoushan (ZS), Xiamen (XM), Qingdao (QD), and zinc smelting area (ZSA), and 85% of hair samples in WMMA, 62% in ZS, 40% in XM, 26% in QD, and 17% in ZSA had THg concentrations exceeding the limit set by the USEPA (1 μg/g). Rice consumption was the main pathway (>85%) for human MeHg exposure in the studied Hg-contaminated areas. Meanwhile, fish was the primary human MeHg exposure source (>85%) in coastal cities. Therefore, soil remediation in typical Hg-contaminated areas and scientific guidance for fish consumption in coastal provinces are urgently needed to reduce the health risks from human Hg exposure in China.

Abstract:We assessed mercury (Hg) pollution in China's coastal waters, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, based on a nationwide dataset from 301 sampling sites. A methylmercury (MeHg) intake model for humans based on the marine food chain and human fish consumption was established to determine the linkage between water pollutants and the pollutant intake by humans. The predicted MeHg concentration in fish from the Bohai Sea was the highest among the four seas included in the study. The MeHg intake through dietary ingestion was dominant for the fish and was considerably higher than the MeHg intake through water respiration. The predicted MeHg concentrations in human blood in the coastal regions of China ranged from 1.37 to 2.77 μg/L for pregnant woman and from 0.43 to 1.00 μg/L for infants, respectively, based on different diet sources. The carnivorous fish consumption advisory for pregnant women was estimated to be 288–654 g per week to maintain MeHg concentrations in human blood at levels below the threshold level (4.4 μg/L established by the US Environmental Protection Agency). With a 50% increase in Hg concentrations in water in the Bohai Sea, the bioaccumulated MeHg concentration (4.5 μg/L) in the fish consumers will be higher than the threshold level. This study demonstrates the importance in controlling Hg pollution in China's coastal waters. An official recommendation guideline for the fish consumption rate and its sources will be necessary for vulnerable populations in China.

Abstract:To assess the health risks due to food consumption, the human daily intake and uptake of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and toxic trace elements (mercury, chromium, cadmium, lead, and arsenic) were estimated based on the animal-based foods collected from markets in Shanghai, China. The estimated daily intake and uptake considering the contaminant bioaccessibility via single food consumption were 9.4–399 and 4.2–282 ng/kg body weight/day for adults, and 10.8–458 and 4.8–323 ng/kg body weight/day for children, respectively. These values were 0.2–104 and 0.05–58.1, and 0.2–119 and 0.06–66.6 ng/kg body weight/day via multiple food consumption for adults and children, respectively. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency risk assessment method, the non-cancer and cancer health risks posed by the contaminants were estimated using the hazard quotient and the lifetime cancer risk method, respectively. The results showed that the combined hazard quotient values for multiple contaminants via single or multiple food consumption were below 1, suggesting that the residents in Shanghai would not experience a significant non-cancer health risk. Among the contaminants investigated, the potential non-cancer risk of methylmercury was highest. However, the combined cancer risk posed by multiple contaminants in most foods exceeded the accepted risk level of 10−6, and inorganic arsenic was the main contributor. The risks caused by polybrominated diphenyl ethers for cancer and non-cancer effects were negligible. The cancer risk of inorganic arsenic is a matter of concern in animal-based foods from Shanghai markets.
