Abstract:Forest fire is a major cause of changes in forest structure and function. Among various floristic regions, the northeast region of India suffers maximum from the fires due to age-old practice of shifting cultivation and spread of fires from jhum fields. For proper mitigation and management, an early warning of forest fires through risk modeling is required. The study results demonstrate the potential use of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) in identifying forest fire prone areas in Manipur, southeastern part of Northeast India. Land use land cover (LULC), vegetation type, Digital elevation model (DEM), slope, aspect and proximity to roads and settlements, factors that influence the behavior of fire, were used to model the forest fire risk zones. Each class of the layers was given weight according to their fire inducing capability and their sensitivity to fire. Weighted sum modeling and ISODATA clustering was used to classify the fire zones. To validate the results, Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR), the historical fire hotspots data was used to check the occurrence points and modeled forest fire locations. The forest risk zone map has 55.63% of agreement with ATSR dataset.

Abstract:Forest fires (FF) in tropical seasonal forests impact ecosystem. Addressing FF in tropical ecosystems has become a priority to mitigate impacts on biodiversity loss and climate change. The escalating frequency and intensity of FF globally have become a mounting concern. Understanding their tendencies, patterns, and vulnerabilities is imperative for conserving ecosystems and facilitating the development of effective prevention and management strategies. This study investigates the trends, patterns, and spatiotemporal distribution of FF for the period of 2001–2022, and delineates the forest fire susceptibility zones in Odisha State, India. The study utilized: (a) MODIS imagery to examine active fire point data; (b) Kernel density tools; (c) FF risk prediction using two machine learning algorithms, namely Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF); (d) Receiver Operating Characteristic and Area Under the Curve, along with various evaluation metrics; and (e) a total of 19 factors, including three topographical, seven climatic, four biophysical, and five anthropogenic, to create a map indicating areas vulnerable to FF. The validation results revealed that the RF model achieved a precision exceeding 94 % on the validation datasets, while the SVM model reached 89 %. The estimated forest fire susceptibility zones using RF and SVM techniques indicated that 20.14 % and 16.72 % of the area, respectively, fall under the "Very High Forest Fire" susceptibility class. Trend analysis reveals a general upward trend in forest fire occurrences (R 2 = 0.59), with a notable increase after 2015, peaking in 2021. Notably, Angul district was identified as the most affected area, documenting the highest number of forest fire incidents over the past 22 years. Additionally, forest fire mitigation plans have been developed by drawing insights from forest fire management strategies implemented in various countries worldwide. Overall, this analysis provides valuable insights for policymakers and forest management authorities to develop effective strategies for forest fire prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:Abstract This study presents a geospatial approach in conjunction with a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tool for mapping forest fire risk zones in the district of Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya, India which is very rich in biodiversity. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP)-based pair-wise comparison matrix was constructed to compare the selected parameters against each other based on their impact/influence (equal, moderate, strong, very strong, and extremely strong) on a forest fire. The final output delineated fire risk zones in the study area in four categories that include very high-risk, high-risk, moderate-risk, and low-risk zones. The delineated fire risk zones were found to be in close agreement with actual fire points obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) fire data for the study area. Results indicated that Ri-Bhoi’s 804.31 sq. km. (32.86%) the area was under ‘very high’ fire susceptibility. This was followed by 583.10 sq. km. (23.82%), 670.47 sq. km. (27.39%), and 390.12 sq. km. (15.93%) the area under high, moderate, and low fire risk categories, respectively. These results can be used effectively to plan fire control measures in advance and the methodology suggested in this study can be adopted in other areas too for delineating potential fire risk zones.

Abstract:Globally,forest fire has been recognized as a major driver of forest degradation. Forest fires are considered to be a potential hazard with physical, biological, ecological and environmental consequences. In India, forest fires are the most significant, and a steadily increasing threat to ecosystem. Furthermore, fires are responsible for the loss of faunal as well as floral diversity in forested habitats. There is no detailed study available which provides an assessment of the impacts of forest fires on the faunal resources in Mizoram, India. Hence, an effort of about 131 transects/trails, 960 camera trap nights, 210 sapling plots during 2018–2021 have resulted in documentation of about 611 species of different groups viz., 418 arthropods (10 orders), 21 amphibia, 28 reptiles, 116 birds and 28 species of mammals in the sampled micro watersheds after stratification of the landscape using 5 × 5 km grids. In forest fire incidence dataof the last 20 years, indicates that the highest number of fire instances were recorded during the month of March in 2009 and the major fire season is of three months from February to April. About and 16.61% and 44.93% of the forested areas were classified as very high-risk zones and high-risk zones, respectively. Further faunal biodiversity richness analysis indicates significant overlap with high risk forest fire zones. We recommend long term monitoring the impacts of fires on different taxonomic groups and to effectively implement the forest fire control strategies in forest areas.

Abstract:In this study, we quantify vegetation fire activity in India using the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) active fire datasets. We assessed different fire regime attributes, i.e., fire frequency, seasonality, intensity and the type of vegetation burnt in diverse geographical regions. MODIS data from 2002–2010 revealed an average of 63696 fire counts per year with the highest during 2009. Fire season in India extends from October to June with the peak during March. The K-means algorithm identified hotspot regions of fire clusters in diverse regions of India. We examined fire radiative power (FRP) data in the hotspot regions to address which fires burn intensively than others based on the vegetation type. We first assessed the best statistical fit distributions for the FRP data using the probability density functions (PDFs) and ranked them based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic. We then described the fire intensities using empirical cumulative distribution functions (CDFs). Results suggest diverse pdfs for the FRP data that included Burr, Dagum, Johnson as well as Pearson distribution and they varied based on the vegetation type burnt. Analysis from empirical CDFs suggested relatively high fire intensity for closed broadleaved evergreen/semi-deciduous forests than the other vegetation types. Although, annual sum of FRP for agricultural fires was less than the closed broadleaved evergreen forests, the values were higher than the mosaic vegetation category and broadleaved deciduous forests. These results on fire hotspots and FRP will be useful to address the impact of vegetation fires on air pollution and climate in India.

Abstract:Forest fires have significant impacts on economies, cultures, and ecologies worldwide. Developing predictive models for forest fire probability is crucial for preventing and managing these fires. Such models contribute to reducing losses and the frequency of forest fires by informing prevention efforts effectively. The objective of this study was to assess and map the forest fire susceptibility (FFS) in the Indian Western Himalayas (IWH) region by employing a GIS-based fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy-AHP) technique, and to evaluate the FFS based on forest type and at district level in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Seventeen potential indicators were chosen for the vulnerability assessment of the IWH region to forest fires. These indicators encompassed physiographic factors, meteorological factors, and anthropogenic factors that significantly affect the susceptibility to fire in the region. The significant factors in FFS mapping included FCR, temperature, and distance to settlement. An FFS zone map of the IWH region was generated and classified into five categories of very low, low, medium, high, and very high FFS. The analysis of FFS based on the forest type revealed that tropical moist deciduous forests have a significant vulnerability to forest fire, with 86.85% of its total area having very high FFS. At the district level, FFS was found to be high in sixteen districts and very high in seventeen districts, constituting 25.7% and 22.6% of the area of the IWH region. Particularly, Lahul and Spiti had 63.9% of their total area designated as having very low FSS, making it the district least vulnerable to forest fires, while Udham Singh Nagar had a high vulnerability with approximately 86% of its area classified as having very high FFS. ROC-AUC analysis, which provided an appreciable accuracy of 79.9%, was used to assess the validity of the FFS map produced in the present study. Incorporating the FFS map into sustainable development planning will assist in devising a holistic strategy that harmonizes environmental conservation, community safety, and economic advancement. This approach can empower decision makers and relevant stakeholders to take more proactive and informed actions, promoting resilience and enhancing long-term well-being.

Abstract:The characteristics of the vegetation fire (VF) regime are strongly influenced by geographical variables such as regional physiographic settings, location, and climate. Understanding the VF regime is extremely important for managing and mitigating the impacts of fires on ecosystems, communities, and human activities in forest fire-prone regions. The present study thereby aimed to explore the potential effects of the confounding factors on VF in India to offer actionable and achievable solutions for mitigating this concurring environmental issue sustainably. A global burn area (250 m) data (Fire-CCIv5.1) and fire radiative power (FRP) were used to investigate the dynamics of VF across seven different divisions in India. The study also used the maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, population density, and intensity of human modification to model forest burn areas (including grassland). The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-6 (CMIP6) was used to predict the burn area for 2030 and 2050 future climate scenarios. The present study accounted for a sizable increasing trend of VF during 2001–2019 period. The highest increasing trend was found in central India (513 and 343 km 2 year −1 in the forest and crop fire, respectively), followed by southern India (364 km 2 year −1 in forest fire), and upper Indo-Gangetic plain (128 km 2 year −1 in crop fire). The FRP has varied significantly across the divisions, with the north-eastern Himalayas exhibiting the highest FRP hotspot. The maximum and minimum temperatures have the greatest influence on forest fires, according to Random Forest (RF) modeling. The estimated pre-monsoonal burn area for 2050 and 2050 future scenarios suggested a more frequent forest fire occurrence across India, particularly in southern and central India. A comprehensive forest fire control policy is therefore essential to safeguard and conserve forest cover in the regions, affected by forest fire periodically.

Abstract:Forest fire is one of the most common natural hazards occurring in the Western Ghats region of Kerala and is one of the reasons for forest degradation. This natural disaster causes considerable damage to the biodiversity of this region during the dry fire season. The area selected for the present study, Eravikulam National Park, which is predominantly of grassland vegetation, is also prone to forest fires. This study aims to delineate the forest fire risk zones in Eravikulam National Park using remote sensing (RS) data and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. In the present study, methods such as Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Frequency Ratio (FR) were used to derive the weights, and the results were compared. We have used seven factors, i.e. land cover types, normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, slope angle, slope aspect, distance from the settlement, and distance from the road to prepare the fire risk zone map. The area of the prepared risk zone maps is divided into three zones, namely low, moderate, and high. From the study, it was found that the fire occurring in this area is due to natural as well as anthropogenic factors. The prepared forest fire risk zone maps are validated using the fire incidence data for the period from January 2003 to June 2019 collected from the records of the Forest Survey of India. The investigation revealed that 72% and 24% of the fire incidences occurred in the high risk zone of the maps prepared using the AHP and FR methods, respectively, which ascertained the superiority of the AHP method over the FR method for forest fire risk zone mapping. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis gives an area under the ROC curve (AUC) value of 0.767 and 0.567 for the AHP and FR methods, respectively. The risk zone maps will be useful for staff of the forest department, planners, and officials of the disaster management department to take effective preventive and mitigation measures.

Abstract:Forest fires are one of the most common natural hazards that occur in the Western Ghats region. There are many protected areas in this part of the Western Ghats; therefore, fire can pose a serious threat to habitats and wildlife. In the past, fires have also affected the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. The objectives of this study are to demarcate the fire risk zones using GIS techniques and to evaluate the influence of each factor on fire initiation. The following factors are selected for the analysis: land cover types, slope angle, aspect, topographic wetness index, distance from the settlement, distance from the road, distance from the tourist spot, and distance from the anti-poaching camp shed. The analytical hierarchy process method is used to determine the weights, and the ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine software tools are used to create the fire risk zone map. The area of the prepared map is divided into the following five risk zones: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. The risk zone map has been validated using fire incidence data for the period from 2002 to 2020 collected from the forest fire portal of the Forest Survey of India. It was found that 71% of fire incidences fall in high-risk and very high–risk zones of the prepared map. The validation using the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, with an area under ROC curve value of 0.795, confirms the prediction accuracy of the risk zone map. The prepared fire risk zone map will help the planners, officials of the forest, and the disaster management departments to take appropriate mitigation measures in order to prevent future fires and thereby protect the valuable forest resources.
Understanding the association between global forest fire products and hydrometeorological variables

Abstract:Climate change and anthropogenic activities have influenced the frequency and magnitude of forest fires both globally and regionally. While skilful short- to extended-range prediction of forest fires is essential for effective mitigation in local communities, it is also important to identify the implications of forest fires on different sectors, including water resources and sustainable development. Limited studies have investigated the association between forest fires and hydrometeorological variables at the regional scale in developing countries due to the lack of necessary datasets, which can now be leveraged using the newly hosted global reanalysis of fire danger indices (referred to as fire indices). The current study presents a comprehensive analysis of the spatio-temporal variations of eight fire indices across India, as well as their association with hydro-meteorological variables, such as precipitation, temperature, and the streamflow of a major river basin (Mahanadi) in India. The accuracy of these indices in capturing real fire events and the potential benefit of incorporating fire indices into long-term hydrologic simulations are also explored. The results show that fire indices can accurately yield fire seasons (i.e., post-monsoon and summer) in India. Furthermore, forest fires are found to be strongly associated with hydro-meteorological variables, typically resulting in low streamflow regimes. Fire indices can also capture actual fire events, maintaining high scalar accuracy. Finally, an improvement in uncalibrated hydrologic model simulations is observed when simulated streamflow is post-processed using the fire indices as predictors. Overall, the current study has valuable implications for fire indices forecasting and hydrologic simulations in ungauged basins.

Abstract:<span>Forest fires have increased at an alarming rate in recent years, with multiple consequences in Nepal's forest ecosystem and landscapes. The research used remote sensing and GIS technology as well as statistical tools for developing forest fires risk models in two major landscapes of Nepal, i.e., Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) and Chitwan Annapurna Landscape (CHAL). A multi-parametric weighted index model was adopted to derive and demarcate the forest fire-risk map with risk variables such as vegetation, topographic factors, land surface temperature, and proximity to the road and settlements. To enhance the use of a fire risk map, collinearity between variables was checked (VIF <2) and validated with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) hotspots and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) method. The MODIS hotspot data from 2001 to 2018 was also evaluated which indicates that the number of fire counts has a strong relation (R<sup>2</sup> =0.82) with the burn area. Broadleaved forest in the pre-monsoon season is highly vulnerable to forest fire. More than half of the total forested area (65%) is in high fire risk, particularly in the TAL region. The study results could assist the decision-makers to implement preventive measures by minimizing the risk and impacts of forest fires.</span>

Abstract:Severity of wildfires witnessed in different parts of the world in the recent times has posed a significant challenge to fire control authorities. Even when the different fire early warning systems have been developed to provide the quickest warnings about the possible wildfire location, severity, and danger, often it is difficult to deploy the resources quickly to contain the wildfire at a short notice. Response time is further delayed when the terrain is complex. Early warning systems based on physics-based models, such as WRF-FIRE/SFIRE, are computationally intensive and require high performance computing resources and significant data related to fuel properties and climate to generate forecasts at short intervals of time (i.e., hourly basis). It is therefore that when the objective is to develop monthly and yearly forecasts, time series models seem to be useful as they require lesser computation power and limited data (as compared to physics-based models). Long duration forecasts are useful in preparing an efficient fire management plan for optimal deployment of resources in the event of forest fire. The present research is aimed at forecasting the number of fires in different forest types of India on a monthly basis using “Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average” time series models (both univariate and with regressors) at 25 km × 25 km spatial resolution (grid) and developing the fire susceptibility maps using Geographical Information System. The performance of models was validated based on the autocorrelation function (ACF), partial ACF, cumulative periodogram, and Portmanteau (L-Jung Box) test. Both the univariate- and regressor-based models performed equally well; however, the univariate model was preferred due to parsimony. The R software package was used to run and test the model. The forecasted active fire counts were tested against the original 3 years monthly forecasts from 2015 to 2017. The variation in coefficient of determination from 0.94 (for year 1 forecast) to 0.64 (when all the 3-year forecasts were considered together) was observed for tropical dry deciduous forests. These values varied from 0.98 to 0.89 for tropical moist deciduous forest and from 0.97 to 0.88 for the tropical evergreen forests. The forecasted active fire counts were used to estimate the future forest fire frequency ratio, which has been used as an indicator of forest fire susceptibility.

Abstract:Forest fires can lead to a decline in ecosystem functions, such as biodiversity, soil quality, and carbon cycling, causing economic losses and health threats to human societies. Therefore, it is imperative to map forest-fire risk to mitigate the likelihood of forest-fire occurrence. In this study, we utilized the hierarchical analysis process (AHP), a comprehensive weighting method (CWM), and random forest to map the forest-fire risk in the Anning River Valley of Sichuan Province. We selected non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), photosynthetic vegetation (PV), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), plant species, land use, soil type, temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, elevation, slope, aspect, distance to road, and distance to residential as forest-fire predisposing factors. We derived the following conclusions. (1) Overlaying historical fire points with mapped forest-fire risk revealed an accuracy that exceeded 86%, indicating the reliability of the results. (2) Forest fires in the Anning River Valley primarily occur in February, March, and April, typically months characterized by very low rainfall and dry conditions. (3) Areas with high and medium forest-fire risk were mainly distributed in Dechang and Xide counties, while low-risk areas were most prevalent in Xichang city and Mianning country. (4) Rainfall, temperature, elevation, and NPV emerged as the main influencing factors, exerting a dominant role in the occurrence of forest fires. Specifically, a higher NPV coverage correlates with an increased risk of forest fire. In conclusion, this study represents a novel approach by incorporating NPV and PV as key factors in triggering forest fires. By mapping forest-fire risk, we have provided a robust scientific foundation and decision-making support for effective fire management strategies. This research significantly contributes to advancing ecological civilization and fostering sustainable development.

Abstract:Globally, the increasing fire events in addition to climate change due to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as other greenhouse gases exerts huge pressure on natural resources and their management. This phenomenon is more severe in the tropical region due to increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, existing pressures, and limiting conditions. In the present study, carbon (C) stock, carbon sequestration (Cseq), CO2 mitigation potential, C budget, and C flux of the seasonally dry forest ecosystem of Chhattisgarh under the influence of wildfire in the protected area and its proximity were evaluated. Four sites namely, high fire zone (HFZ), medium fire zone (MFZ), low fire zone (LFZ), and non‐fire zone (NFZ) were selected and marked based on fire return intervals (frequency) and extent of damage. The present work is a novel approach that assesses the impact of different fire frequencies on C dynamics of fire‐affected zones. The stratified sampling technique was used within a permanent plot of 1 hectare. Forest stands on each site were analyzed using 10 randomly placed quadrats (each 10 × 10 m in size) and data were collected from each site. Across the sites higher tree density was observed at NFZ and the lowest at HFZ.Total tree biomass ranged between 116.0 and 358.4 t ha−1 across the fire regimes. Total vegetation C stock ranged between 59.1 and 169.5 t ha−1 in different sites. The C mitigation and Cseq potential ranged between 186.2 and 575.3 t ha−1, and 7.1 and 15.9 t ha−1, respectively being highest in NFZ and lowest in HFZ. The species such as Anogeissus latifolia, Buchanania lanzan, Shorea robusta, Lannea coromandelica, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Ougeinia oojeinensis, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia tomentosa are the major contributor in biomass, C stock, C mitigation, and Cseq potential in different fire regimes. Thus, our findings would be highly useful in the restoration process of fire‐affected zones through the plantation of selective plant species. Therefore, the aforementioned species could be effectively utilized while going for an afforestation/reforestation program, and will be helpful in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies under different fire zones.

Abstract:Forest fires are one of the most common natural and anthropogenic events that have long-term impacts on the environment. In this study, we analyzed 17 years of data on forest fires in Chhattisgarh, India, using active fire and burned area data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Chhattisgarh was selected as the study area due to its high incidences of forest fires, significant forest cover, and scarce studies on forest fires. Our findings showed that the number of forest fires in the region increased over time, from 1487 forest fires in 2005 to 3074 forest fires in 2021, with the highest number of fires occurring in 2017 and 2009. Most of the fires occurred in deciduous broadleaf forests and savannas, following a consistent seasonal pattern, with the highest percentage of fires (88.88%) occurring in March, April, and May. The fire hotspot was located in the southwest region, dominated by deciduous broadleaf forests which are particularly prone to fires. These results emphasize the significance of effective fire management strategies that consider the seasonal and annual variability of forest fires, particularly in high-risk areas. Immediate attention to controlling forest fires is also critical to minimize its impact on the environment and local communities.

Abstract:Background In the last two decades, Nepal has experienced an increase in both forest fire frequency and area, but very little is known about its spatiotemporal dimension. A limited number of studies have researched the extent, timing, causative parameters, and vulnerability factors regarding forest fire in Nepal. Our study analyzed forest fire trends and patterns in Nepal for the last two decades and analyzed forest fire-vulnerability risk based on historical incidents across the country. Results We analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of forest fires and the extent of burned area using the Mann-Kendall trend test and two machine-learning approaches maximum entropy (MaxEnt), and deep neural network (DNN). More than 78% of the forest fire burned area was recorded between March and May. The total burned area has increased over the years since 2001 by 0.6% annually. The forest fire-vulnerability risk obtained from both approaches was categorized into four classes—very high, high, low, and very low. Conclusions Although burned area obtained from both models was comparable, the DNN slightly outperformed the MaxEnt model. DNN uses a complex structure of algorithms modeled on the human brain that enables the processing of the complex relationship between input and output dataset, making DNN-based models recommended over MaxEnt. These findings can be very useful for initiating and implementing the most suitable forest management intervention.

Abstract:Forest fire is a global phenomenon, resulting in devastation across regions. Nepal is not an exception where forest ecosystems and environment are vulnerable to forest fires, causing loss of properties and lives. While a range of studies have been conducted on the causes of forest fire and its impact, temporal and spatial dimensions along with ecological and socio-economic implications are largely overlooked. This paper aims to identify the temporal and spatial distribution of forest fire, and its implications on forest ecology, environmental, and socio-economic sectors of Nepal. Data on fire incidences and burnt areas were obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and information pertaining to environmental and socio-economic implications were collected from various secondary sources. The 2001-2020 data revealed increasing forest fire incidences. Seasonally, pre-monsoon appeared to have higher frequencies of forest fires. By province, the Tarai and Siwalik regions of the Sudurpaschim Province, Madhesh Province, Lumbini Province, and Bagmati Province are susceptible to fire. In terms of fire risk, the Tarai-Siwalik region of Sudurpaschim and Madhesh Province are at very high forest fire risk. In terms of environmental loss and damage, every year on an average, 3,098 fire incidences occur resulting in damage to 172,040.65 hectares (ha) of forest and biomass loss of 7.07 million tons per year accounting to emission of 3.30 million tons of carbon per year. During 2020-2021 period, a total of Nepalese Rupees (NPR) 1890000 (USD 15240.70) was lost due to the damage incurred by forest fire. Likewise, from 2007 to 2021, 71 human casualties have been recorded. Both natural and anthropogenic factors are responsible for the occurrence of forest fire in Nepal. Thus, for the protection of forests, properties and lives, strict forest fire mitigation policies and practices ensuring sustainable forest fire management is crucial.

Abstract:Forest fires are a recurring issue in many parts of the world, including India. These fires can have various causes, including human activities (such as agricultural burning, campfires, or discarded cigarettes) and natural factors (such as lightning). The present study presents a comprehensive and advanced methodology for assessing wildfire susceptibility by integrating diverse environmental variables and leveraging cutting-edge machine learning techniques across Gujarat State, India. The primary goal of the study is to utilize Google Earth Engine to compare locations in Gujarat, India, before and after forest fires. High-resolution satellite data were used to assess the amount and types of changes caused by forest fires. The present study meticulously analyzes various environmental variables, i.e., slope orientation, elevation, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), drainage density, precipitation, and temperature to understand landscape characteristics and assess wildfire susceptibility. In addition, a sophisticated random forest regression model is used to predict land surface temperature based on a set of environmental parameters. The maps that result depict the geographical distribution of normalized burn ratio and difference normalized burn ratio and land surface temperature forecasts, providing valuable insights into spatial patterns and trends. The findings of this work show that an automated temporal analysis utilizing Google Earth Engine may be used successfully over a wide range of land cover types, providing critical data for future monitoring of such threats. The impact of forest fires can be severe, leading to the loss of biodiversity, damage to ecosystems, and threats to human settlements.

Abstract:Periodic forest fires occur in sub-tropical deciduous forest of Ayodhya hill region which is extended part of Eastern Ghats Mountain Range (India). This forest provides diverse ecosystem services (mostly non timber forest products)to tribal and non-tribal people throughout the year. The main objective of this study is to demarcate the accurate forest fire susceptibility zones applying three relevant machine learning models i.e., Random Forest (RF), Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Deep Learning Neural Network (DLNN). In this research, more than 300 hundreds historical forest fire events along with 14 forest fire predictors have been considered. DLNN model has the highest efficacy (AUC = 0.925). Features of DLNN are instinctively presumed and optimally tuned for required outcomes. Applied models explicitly examined that the north western and eastern segments of Ayodhya hill are highly susceptible for forest fire due to its physical and social complexity. DLNN model investigates that total 18% areas of Ayodhya hill have come under very high susceptible zone. The forest fire incidents are taken place during March to May because of the effect of high temperature, poor moisture content and existence of high fuel woods. Both the machine and deep learning techniques have been applied first time in this dry deciduous forest belt and models indicated high accuracy and precision which is harmonized with ground reality. This study will definitely help the local government to take proper management and conservation strategies for sustainable forest resources conservation along with improvement of livelihood of forest and forest fringe dwellers.
Assessing district-level climate vulnerability in Madhya Pradesh, Central India: an integrated environmental and socio-economic approach

Abstract:Climate change poses significant challenges to human societies and natural ecosystems, necessitating comprehensive vulnerability assessments to develop appropriate adaptation stratigies. This study focuses on Central India and employs a multidimensional approach to evaluate the composite vulnerability at the district level. By integrating environmental (8 indicators) and socio-economic (5 indicators) factors, this study offers a nuanced understanding of vulnerability patterns in the region. The methodology involves the selection of indicators based on past literature and preliminary investigation, followed by secondary data collection from environmental and socio-economic factors. The data is analysed using an indicator-based approach, normalisation, weighting, and developing vulnerability indexes. This analysis is structured in three phases: Environmental Vulnerability Index (EVI), Socio-economic Vulnerability Index (SVI), and Composite Vulnerability Index (CVI). The results of CVI revealed that districts with a lower CVI (0.321–0.378), such as Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Bhopal, exhibited decreased vulnerability because of a lower level of climatic extremes affected areas, reduced percentage of socially deprived population and a higher value of HDI. Districts with medium CVI (0.381–0.407), such as Damoh, Indore, and Shahdol, exhibited moderate resilience. On the other hand, districts with high (0.409–0.402) and very high CVI (0.448–0.540), such as Narsimhapur, Betul, Balaghat, Chhindwara, Alirajpur, and Barwani, encountered notable susceptibility because of factors such as dependence on agriculture, a substantial proportion of socially deprived population, occurrences of droughts and floods. Hierarchical cluster analysis validated vulnerability classifications, enhancing the credibility of assessments. The research underscores the importance of considering climate change vulnerability assessments for effective policy formulation and adaptive strategies.
