Abstract:We propose a continuum theory of orientational phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field in a suspension of carbon nanotubes in a nematic liquid crystal. It is shown that in a magnetic field a non-uniform and two different uniform phases are possible in the suspension. The uniform phases of the suspension differ by the type of orientational coupling of nanotubes with the liquid crystal matrix (the planar type when the nanotubes are oriented along the matrix director, and the homeotropic type when the nanotubes are perpendicular to the director). The possibility of a redistribution of the nanotube concentration (segregation effect) is shown. The fields of orientational transitions between uniform and non-uniform phases of the suspension are found analytically. It is shown that, when the nanotubes are weakly coupled to the matrix, the magnetic field induces reentrant transitions (uniform planar phase–non-uniform phase–uniform homeotropic phase–non-uniform phase). These transitions can be of first or of second order depending on the carbon nanotubes segregation intensity.

Large Magneto-Optical Birefringence of Colloidal Suspensions of Α-Feooh Goethite Nanocrystallites

Abstract:A large magnetic-field induced birefringence (reduced value of approximately 10−2), was observed at 40kA/m field strength for colloid suspensions of spherical goethite nanocrystallite. We ascribe this behavior of these suspensions to long-range orientation of optically equivalent ellipsoids, rather than long-ranged spatial ordering of building blocks (as liquid crystals) or interparticle interaction (as ferrofluids) from the magnetic field. Comparing experimental and theoretical results based on bulk properties, goethite nanocrystallites have refractive index approximately 103 times larger than that of the bulk; accordingly, dielectric constant is approximately 106 times larger in the optical-frequency regime.

Abstract:A composite ferronematic system based on the nematic liquid crystal E7, doped with lath-like goethite magnetic nanoparticles of volume concentrations 10−3, 5 × 10−4, and 10−5, was investigated. Both surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and the magneto-optical effect were used to study the influence of magnetic nanoparticles on ferronematic liquid crystals' structural changes, focused above all on structural transitions. The responses of SAW attenuation and light transmission to external magnetic fields were investigated experimentally under linearly increasing/decreasing or jumped (time influence) magnetic fields, respectively. An investigation of temperature on structural changes was performed, as well. The experimental results validated the decrease in the threshold field of the ferronematic composites in comparison with the pure E7, as well as an increase in the transition temperature with the increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles. The effect of the nanoparticles' concentration on both total structural changes and residual attenuations at the vanishing magnetic field was also registered. The light transmission measurements confirmed the effect of the concentration of goethite nanoparticles on the resultant magneto-optical behavior, concerning both its stability and switching time.

Field-controlled structures in ferromagnetic cholesteric liquid crystals

Abstract:One of the advantages of anisotropic soft materials is that their structures and, consequently, their properties can be controlled by moderate external fields. Whereas the control of materials with uniform orientational order is straightforward, manipulation of systems with complex orientational order is challenging. We show that a variety of structures of an interesting liquid material, which combine chiral orientational order with ferromagnetic one, can be controlled by a combination of small magnetic and electric fields. In the suspensions of magnetic nanoplatelets in chiral nematic liquid crystals, the platelet's magnetic moments orient along the orientation of the liquid crystal and, consequently, the material exhibits linear response to small magnetic fields. In the absence of external fields, orientations of the liquid crystal and magnetization have wound structure, which can be either homogeneously helical, disordered, or ordered in complex patterns, depending on the boundary condition at the surfaces and the history of the sample. We demonstrate that by using different combinations of small magnetic and electric fields, it is possible to control reversibly the formation of the structures in a layer of the material. In such a way, different periodic structures can be explored and some of them may be suitable for photonic applications. The material is also a convenient model system to study chiral magnetic structures, because it is a unique liquid analog of a solid helimagnet.
Dispersions of Goethite Nanorods in Aprotic Polar Solvents

Abstract:Colloidal suspensions of anisotropic nanoparticles can spontaneously self-organize in liquid-crystalline phases beyond some concentration threshold. These phases often respond to electric and magnetic fields. At lower concentrations, usual isotropic liquids are observed but they can display very strong Kerr and Cotton-Mouton effects (i.e., field-induced particle orientation). For many examples of these colloidal suspensions, the solvent is water, which hinders most electro-optic applications. Here, for goethite (α-FeOOH) nanorod dispersions, we show that water can be replaced by polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), without loss of colloidal stability. By polarized-light microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering and electro-optic measurements, we found that the nematic phase, with its field-response properties, is retained. Moreover, a strong Kerr effect was also observed with isotropic goethite suspensions in these polar aprotic solvents. Furthermore, we found no significant difference in the behavior of both the nematic and isotropic phases between the aqueous and non-aqueous dispersions. Our work shows that goethite nanorod suspensions in polar aprotic solvents, suitable for electro-optic applications, can easily be produced and that they keep all their outstanding properties. It also suggests that this solvent replacement method could be extended to the aqueous colloidal suspensions of other kinds of charged anisotropic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Background: Anesthesia is a demanding occupation due to long working hours, sustained vigilance, unpredictability of stressful situation, fear of litigation, competence, and production pressure. Work-related exhaustion can lead to several physical and psychological symptoms and delay decision making. The aim of this study was to evaluate how different work conditions affect personnel exhaustion by studying a sample of anesthesiologists comparing them with ophthalmologists and ancillary hospital staff Methods: One hundred fifty persons divided into three equal groups (50 each) were invited to participate in this study. Subjects were asked to answer two self report questionnaires: The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) which used to assess work related exhaustion and mental health, respectively. Results: Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory scale (MFI 20) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ 12) were significantly higher in anesthesiologists than in other groups (P = 0.001). Different aspects of work-related exhaustion showed that general, physical and mental fatigue were significantly higher in anesthesiologists (P = 0.002 and 0.001, respectively). Reduced activity and reduced motivation were also higher in anesthesiologists compare to the other groups (P = 0.005 and 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Work-related exhaustion under the current study is more obvious among anesthesiologists. Ophthalmologist and ancillary hospital employees felt that they had less stress at their work.
Dispersion of Multiferroic Nanoparticles in a Bent-Core Nematic Liquid Crystal: Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:A novel nanocomposite system has been prepared by dispersing multiferroic bismuth ferrite nanoparticles (BiFeO$_3$) in a bent-core nematic liquid crystal (8-F-OH) that exhibits cybotactic clusters. Transition temperature, optical textures, order parameter $S_m$, and dielectric spectroscopy experiments are performed in the doped system, and the results are compared with the pure one. The main experimental outcome is that the doped system has increased orientational order parameters, even though the cybotactic cluster size is reduced due to the incorporation of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles. The transition temperature, as observed under polarising optical microscopy, clearly indicates a reduction of $1 - 2~ ^\circ{\rm C}$ in the doped system compared to the pure one, and we conjecture this is due to the disordering of the cybotactic cluster in the doped system. Based on the experimental findings, a Landau-de Gennes-type free energy model is developed. The model qualitatively explains the increased mean order parameter and the disordering of cybotactic clusters with increasing polarization value of nanoparticles. This is corroborated by experimental findings.

Dynamic behavior of a nematic liquid crystal mixed with CoFe2O4 ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a magnetic field

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of a mixture of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) with 1% CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was analyzed. Experimental data indicate a high stability of the nematic director in the mixture compared to a reference 5CB sample in the magnetic field. The ferrite nanoparticles agglomerate forming long chains as observed in polarized microscopy images. These chains have a very high influence on the magneto-optic effect of the cell. When the magnetic field is applied on the mixture, the chains tend to align with the field direction but, due to their large size, they remain oriented obliquely between the support plates. Thus, the nematic molecules anchored on their surface can not reorient with the field and only a small distortion angle of the liquid crystal molecular director is observed. A comparison with a previously developed theoretical model confirms this small deviation.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the orientational and electrical behaviors of a cholesteric liquid crystal dispersed with ferroelectric nanoparticles. We assume a soft planar coupling between the liquid crystal molecules and the nanoparticles. We consider two spiral structures in the ferroelectric nano-dispersed system under an external electric field. This assumption is due to the fact that the director and the polarization vector would have different pitches of spiral structure. We study the behavior of the average polarization and the pitch of the helical structure as a function of the field strength. The impact of ferroelectric nanoparticles on cholesteric-nematic phase transition is investigated by calculating the critical electric field. The influence of field strength and material parameters on the phase transition is also discussed. The calculations are based on a developed continuum theory and a modified form of free energy for the helical supramolecular structure. The influence of nanoparticle volume fraction on the helix unwinding of both spiral structures is studied. It is found that an electric field with a sufficiently high strength causes an increase in the pitch of the helical structure of polarization. We obtain a critical volume fraction of nanoparticles, after which the pitch of the polarization helical structure differs from the director pitch.

Abstract:Spherical, non-cubic crystal nanoparticles with an anisotropic dielectric constant and a weak intrinsic magnetic moment, such as goethite nanoparticles, can be considered to be equivalent to a magnetic dielectric ellipsoid. For colloids based on such ellipsoids, the dielectric constant is isotropic in zero magnetic field. However, when a magnetic field is applied, the moments’ Brownian rotation, which is connected with the rotation of the ellipsoids themselves, will induce order in the orientation of the dielectric ellipsoids, so that the dielectric constant of the colloids becomes anisotropic to exhibit magneto-optical effect. As the orientation of the dielectric ellipsoids has been ordered by the magnetic field, the mechanism of optical effects is different from general ferrofluids and liquid crystals, and can be viewed as an optically anisotropic action which results from the coupling of both the magnetic and dielectric properties, i.e. the optical effects only come up when a magnetic field is applied because all the dielectric ellipsoids become aligned. It is confirmed from theory and experiment that for magnetic colloid based on spherical nanoparticles with cubic crystal structure, the magneto-optical effects cannot be due to the reaction of single particles.
Phase Field Simulation of Magnetization Vortex in Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials

Abstract:Magnetization vortices in ferromagnetic nanostructures have attracted considerable attention due to their potential application in nanoscale memory devices. A magnetization vortex with in-plane curling magnetization and out-of-plane magnetization at the core is a unique stable state. The out-of-plane magnetization at the core can be switched from an upward state to a downward state or from a downward state to an upward state by a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. This switchable property makes magnetization vortex a promising candidate for memory cells in future non-volatile data-storage devices. In this work, a real-space phase field model is developed to investigate the switching behavior of magnetization vortex in ferromagnetic nanostructures subjected to different mechanical strains. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation, the phase field model takes into account the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction of magnetizations, which includes the coupling between the magnetization and magnetization gradient. The governing equations in the phase field model are solved simultaneously by means of a nonlinear finite elements method, which can be employed to simulate magnetization vortex without periodic boundary condition. The phase field simulations demonstrate that the vortex polarity of a circular ferromagnetic nanodot can be switched by torsion when the sign of the torsion is opposite to that of vortex chirality, whereas switching does not take place if the sign of torsion is the same as that of vortex chirality. The magneto-elastic coupling and demagnetization field play a decisive role in the polarity switching, which involves an intriguing interplay of magnetization, strain and demagnetization. The results suggest another way to control vortex polarity and vortex stability by mechanical field other than magnetic field and electric current. It is also found that the DM interaction has significant influence on the structure of the magnetization vortex. The DM interaction induces an out-of-plane magnetization on the edge of the vortex and enlarges the size of the vortex core. The magnitude of the out-of-plane magnetization at the vortex core and the edge increases with the increase of DM constant. Besides, the handedness of magnetization vortex also changes when the sign of DM constant changes.
Comparison of dynamic behavior of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nematic suspensions

Abstract:The pioneering realization of suspensions of ferroelectric nanoparticles in a nematic host was one of excellent contributions of Yuri Reznikov to the science of liquid crystals [Y. Reznikov et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 82 (2003) 191]. This achievement created great excitement as entailed the enhancement of materials dielectric properties and increase of the phase transition temperature between nematic and isotropic phase. In this contribution, we examine the spectrum of fundamental fluctuations in one of his ferroelectric suspensions by dynamic light scattering measurements, which gives insight into the coupling between the particles and the orientation of the liquid crystalline matrix. We set side by side these results with the equivalent ones obtained for the case of stable suspensions of ferromagnetic nanoplatelets in a nematic matrix showing macroscopic ferromagnetic ordering. The underlying origin of the difference between the particle-matrix coupling observed in both cases is discussed and its effect on the orientational fluctuations spectrum is compared.

Abstract:The director deformation inside a nematic cell, after a magnetic field is applied at an oblique angle α relatively to the initial homogeneous director, is studied considering a magnetic reorientation driven by hydrodynamic instabilities. This study is carried out for the splay and the bend non-Freedericksz geometries with α<π/2. Critical sample thicknesses are predicted for both the homogeneous deformed and the periodic director reorientations, giving way to a stripe pattern in the last case. The first transition, to homogeneous deformed director, is the equivalent of a second order phase transition, while the second transition, to a periodic director, is the equivalent of a first order phase transition.

SAXS reveals the magnetic alignment pathway of the goethite columnar liquid crystal phase

Abstract:The alignment of board-like colloidal goethite particles in the dense rectangular centred columnar liquid crystal phase in an external magnetic field is studied using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Transient SAXS-patterns show broadening of the columnar reflections in specific directions. While the reflections along the field stay at a constant Q-value, the other reflections do not. These results imply a certain pathway of reorientation. It appears that alignment proceeds via collective rotation of domains inducing 'nanoshear' between the layers of particles, which slide over each other. The results support the recently suggested martensitic transition pathway for the simple and centred rectangular columnar phases, which were found to spontaneously transform into each other in another goethite system. The results also provide a fine example of how SAXS can be used to study reorientation behaviour of liquid crystals at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Isotropic-Nematic and Nematic-Nematic transitions from a homogeneous base state of a suspension of high aspect ratio, rod-like magnetic particles are studied for both Maier-Saupe and the Onsager excluded volume potentials. A combination of classical linear stability and asymptotic analyses provides insight into possible nematic states emanating from both the isotropic and nematic non-polarized equilibrium states. Local analytical results close to critical points in conjunction with global numerical results (Bhandar, 2002) yields a unified picture of the bifurcation diagram and provides a convenient base state to study effects of external orienting fields.

Giant magnetoelectric effect induced by intrinsic surface stress in ferroic nanorods

Abstract:The general approach for the consideration of the magnetoelectric effects in ferroic nanorods is proposed in the framework of the phenomenological theory. The intrinsic surface stress, magneto- and electrostriction as well as piezoelectric and piezomagnetic effects are included into the free energy. The intrinsic surface stress under the curved nanoparticle surface is shown to play an important role in the shift of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic transition temperatures and built-in magnetic and electric fields appearance, which are inversely proportional to the nanorod radius. We consider the case of quadratic and linear magnetoelectric coupling coefficients. The linear coupling coefficient is radius independent, whereas the quadratic ones include terms inversely proportional to the nanorod radius and thus strongly increase with decrease of the radius. The predicted giant relative dielectric tunability in the vicinity of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase transition points induced by quadratic magnetoelectric coupling increases by 2-50 times. The quadratic magnetoelectric coupling dramatically changes the phase diagrams of ferroic nanorods when the radius decreases. In particular the second order phase transition may become a first one, the triple point state characterized by continuous set of order parameters appears at zero external electric and magnetic fields and the tricritical points appear under external fields.

Anomalous behavior of electric-field Fréedericksz transitions

Abstract:Fréedericksz transitions in nematic liquid crystals are re-examined with a focus on differences between systems with magnetic fields and those with electric fields. A magnetic field can be treated as uniform in a liquid-crystal medium; while a nonuniform director field will in general cause nonuniformity of the local electric field as well. Despite these differences, the widely held view is that the formula for the threshold of local instability in an electric-field Fréedericksz transition can be obtained from that for the magnetic-field transition in the same geometry by simply replacing the magnetic parameters by their electric counterparts. However, it was shown in [Arakelyan, Karayan, and Chilingaryan, Sov. Phys. Dokl., 29 (1984) 202-204] that in two of the six classical electric-field Fréedericksz transitions, the local-instability threshold should be strictly greater than that predicted by this magnetic-field analogy. Why this elevation of the threshold occurs is carefully examined, and a simple test to determine when it can happen is given. This "anomalous behavior" is not restricted to classical Fréedericksz transitions and is shown to be present in certain layered systems (planar cholesterics, smectic-A) and in certain nematic systems that exhibit periodic instabilities.

Magnetic cylindrical colloids at liquid interfaces exhibit non-volatile switching of their orientation in an external field

Abstract:We study the orientation of magnetic cylindrical particles adsorbed at a liquid interface in an external field using analytical theory and high resolution finite element simulations. Cylindrical particles are interesting since they possess multiple locally stable orientations at the liquid interface so that the orientational transitions induced by an external field will not disappear when the external field is removed, i.e., the switching effect is non-volatile. We show that, in the absence of an external field, as we reduce the aspect ratio α of the cylinders below a critical value (αc≈ 2) the particles undergo spontaneous symmetry breaking from a stable side-on state to one of two equivalent stable tilted states, similar to the spontaneous magnetisation of a ferromagnet going through the Curie point. By tuning both the aspect ratio and contact angle of the cylinders, we show that it is possible to engineer particles that have one, two, three or four locally stable orientations. We also find that the magnetic responses of cylinders with one or two stable states are similar to that of paramagnets and ferromagnets respectively, while the magnetic response of systems with three or four stable states are even more complex and have no analogs in simple magnetic systems. Magnetic cylinders at liquid interfaces therefore provide a facile method for creating switchable functional monolayers where we can use an external field to induce multiple non-volatile changes in particle orientation and self-assembled structure.

Abstract:We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.

Abstract:Spherical microparticles dispersed in nematic liquid crystals have been extensively investigated in the past years. Here, we report experimental studies on the elastic deformation, colloidal interaction and self-assembly of hematite microcubes with homeotropic surface anchoring in a nematic liquid crystal. We demonstrate that the colloidal interaction and self-assembly of cubic colloids are orientation dependent. In a notable departure from the conventional microspheres, the microcubes stabilise diverse structures, such as bent chains, branches, kinks and closed-loops. The microcubes reorient under rotating external magnetic field, thereby experiencing an elastic torque in the medium, which allows us to measure the magnetic moment through competition between elastic and magnetic torques. Our findings envisage that the faceted magnetic colloids in liquid crystals are potential for developing new functional magnetic materials with specific morphologies.
