Abstract:The Connectivity Augmentation Problem (CAP) together with a well-known special case thereof known as the Tree Augmentation Problem (TAP) are among the most basic Network Design problems. There has been a surge of interest recently to find approximation algorithms with guarantees below $2$ for both TAP and CAP, culminating in the currently best approximation factor for both problems of $1.393$ through quite sophisticated techniques. We present a new and arguably simple matching-based method for the well-known special case of leaf-to-leaf instances. Combining our work with prior techniques, we readily obtain a $(\frac{4}{3}+\epsilon)$-approximation for Leaf-to-Leaf CAP by returning the better of our solution and one of an existing method. Prior to our work, a $\frac{4}{3}$-guarantee was only known for Leaf-to-Leaf TAP instances on trees of height $2$. Moreover, when combining our technique with a recently introduced stack analysis approach, which is part of the above-mentioned $1.393$-approximation, we can further improve the approximation factor to $1.29$, obtaining for the first time a factor below $\frac{4}{3}$ for a nontrivial class of TAP/CAP instances.

Breaching the 2-Approximation Barrier for Connectivity Augmentation: a Reduction to Steiner Tree

Abstract:The basic goal of survivable network design is to build a cheap network that maintains the connectivity between given sets of nodes despite the failure of a few edges/nodes. The Connectivity Augmentation Problem (CAP) is arguably one of the most basic problems in this area: given a $k$(-edge)-connected graph $G$ and a set of extra edges (links), select a minimum cardinality subset $A$ of links such that adding $A$ to $G$ increases its edge connectivity to $k+1$. Intuitively, one wants to make an existing network more reliable by augmenting it with extra edges. The best known approximation factor for this NP-hard problem is $2$, and this can be achieved with multiple approaches (the first such result is in [Frederickson and Jájá'81]). It is known [Dinitz et al.'76] that CAP can be reduced to the case $k=1$, a.k.a. the Tree Augmentation Problem (TAP), for odd $k$, and to the case $k=2$, a.k.a. the Cactus Augmentation Problem (CacAP), for even $k$. Several better than $2$ approximation algorithms are known for TAP, culminating with a recent $1.458$ approximation [Grandoni et al.'18]. However, for CacAP the best known approximation is $2$. In this paper we breach the $2$ approximation barrier for CacAP, hence for CAP, by presenting a polynomial-time $2\ln(4)-\frac{967}{1120}+\epsilon<1.91$ approximation. Previous approaches exploit properties of TAP that do not seem to generalize to CacAP. We instead use a reduction to the Steiner tree problem which was previously used in parameterized algorithms [Basavaraju et al.'14]. This reduction is not approximation preserving, and using the current best approximation factor for Steiner tree [Byrka et al.'13] as a black-box would not be good enough to improve on $2$. To achieve the latter goal, we ``open the box'' and exploit the specific properties of the instances of Steiner tree arising from CacAP.

Abstract:In connectivity augmentation problems we are given a graph and an edge set E on V , and seek a min-size edge set such that has larger connectivity than G . In the 1 -Connectivity Augmentation ( -CA ) problem G is connected and should be 2-connected. In the Leaf to Leaf -CA every edge in E connects two leaves in the block-tree of G . For this version we give a simple combinatorial 5/3-approximation algorithm, improving the 1.892 approximation that applies for the general case. We will also show by a simple proof that if the Steiner Tree problem admits approximation ratio then -CA admits approximation ratio , where x is the solution to the equation . For the currently best value of this gives approximation ratio 1.942. This is worse than the best known ratio 1.892, but has the advantage of using Steiner Tree approximation as a "black box". In the Element Connectivity Augmentation problem we are given a graph , , and connectivity requirements . The goal is to find a min-size set J of new edges on S such that for all the graph contains r ( u , v ) uv -paths such that no two of them have an edge or a node in in common. The problem is NP-hard even when . We obtain approximation ratio 3/2, improving the previous best ratio 7/4. For the case of degree bounds on S we obtain the same ratio with just degree violation, which is tight, since deciding whether there exists a feasible solution is NP-hard even when .

Abstract:The basic goal of survivable network design is to build cheap networks that guarantee the connectivity of certain pairs of nodes despite the failure of a few edges or nodes. A celebrated result by Jain [Combinatorica'01] provides a 2-approximation for a wide class of these problems. However nothing better is known even for very basic special cases, raising the natural question whether any improved approximation factor is possible at all. In this paper we address one of the most basic problems in this family for which 2 is still the best-known approximation factor, the Forest Augmentation Problem (FAP): given an undirected unweighted graph (that w.l.o.g. is a forest) and a collection of extra edges (links), compute a minimum cardinality subset of links whose addition to the graph makes it 2-edge-connected. Several better-than-2 approximation algorithms are known for the special case where the input graph is a tree, a.k.a. the Tree Augmentation Problem (TAP). Recently this was achieved also for the weighted version of TAP, and for the k-edge-connectivity generalization of TAP. These results heavily exploit the fact that the input graph is connected, a condition that does not hold in FAP. In this paper we breach the 2-approximation barrier for FAP. Our result is based on two main ingredients. First, we describe a reduction to the Path Augmentation Problem (PAP), the special case of FAP where the input graph is a collection of disjoint paths. Our reduction is not approximation preserving, however it is sufficiently accurate to improve on a factor 2 approximation. Second, we present a better-than-2 approximation algorithm for PAP, an open problem on its own. Here we exploit a novel notion of implicit credits which might turn out to be helpful in future related work.

Abstract:We consider connectivity augmentation problems in the Steiner setting, where the goal is to augment the edge-connectivity between a specified subset of terminal nodes. In the Steiner Augmentation of a Graph problem ($k$-SAG), we are given a $k$-edge-connected subgraph $H$ of a graph $G$. The goal is to augment $H$ by including links from $G$ of minimum cost so that the edge-connectivity between nodes of $H$ increases by 1. This is a generalization of the Weighted Connectivity Augmentation Problem, in which only links between pairs of nodes in $H$ are available for the augmentation. In the Steiner Connectivity Augmentation Problem ($k$-SCAP), we are given a Steiner $k$-edge-connected graph connecting terminals $R$, and we seek to add links of minimum cost to create a Steiner $(k+1)$-edge-connected graph for $R$. Note that $k$-SAG is a special case of $k$-SCAP. The results of Ravi, Zhang and Zlatin for the Steiner Tree Augmentation problem yield a $(1.5+\varepsilon)$-approximation for $1$-SCAP and for $k$-SAG when $k$ is odd (SODA'23). In this work, we give a $(1 + \ln{2} +\varepsilon)$-approximation for the Steiner Ring Augmentation Problem (SRAP). This yields a polynomial time algorithm with approximation ratio $(1 + \ln{2} + \varepsilon)$ for $2$-SCAP. We obtain an improved approximation guarantee for SRAP when the ring consists of only terminals, yielding a $(1.5+\varepsilon)$-approximation for $k$-SAG for any $k$.

Abstract:In the Steiner Tree Augmentation Problem (STAP), we are given a graph $G = (V,E)$, a set of terminals $R \subseteq V$, and a Steiner tree $T$ spanning $R$. The edges $L := E \setminus E(T)$ are called links and have non-negative costs. The goal is to augment $T$ by adding a minimum cost set of links, so that there are 2 edge-disjoint paths between each pair of vertices in $R$. This problem is a special case of the Survivable Network Design Problem, which can be approximated to within a factor of 2 using iterative rounding~\cite{J2001}. We give the first polynomial time algorithm for STAP with approximation ratio better than 2. In particular, we achieve an approximation ratio of $(1.5 + \varepsilon)$. To do this, we employ the Local Search approach of~\cite{TZ2022} for the Tree Augmentation Problem and generalize their main decomposition theorem from links (of size two) to hyper-links. We also consider the Node-Weighted Steiner Tree Augmentation Problem (NW-STAP) in which the non-terminal nodes have non-negative costs. We seek a cheapest subset $S \subseteq V \setminus R$ so that $G[R \cup S]$ is 2-edge-connected. Using a result of Nutov~\cite{N2010}, there exists an $O(\log |R|)$-approximation for this problem. We provide an $O(\log^2 (|R|))$-approximation algorithm for NW-STAP using a greedy algorithm leveraging the spider decomposition of optimal solutions.

Abstract:The $2$-Edge Connected Spanning Subgraph problem (2ECSS) is among the most basic survivable network design problems: given an undirected unweighted graph, find a subgraph with the minimum number of edges which is 2-edge-connected (i.e., it remains connected after the removal of any single edge). This NP-hard problem is well-studied in terms of approximation algorithms. The current-best approximation factor for 2ECSS is $1.3+\varepsilon$ for any constant $\varepsilon >0$ [Garg, Grandoni, Jabal-Ameli'23; Kobayashi,Noguchi'23]. In this paper we present a much simpler $9/7$ approximation algorithm, and a more complex $5/4$ one. Our algorithms are also faster: their running time is $n^{O(1)}$ instead of $n^{O(1/\varepsilon)}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the weighted tree augmentation problem (TAP), where the goal is to augment a tree with a minimum cost set of edges such that the graph becomes two edge connected. First we show that in weighted TAP, we can restrict our attention to trees which are binary and where all the non-tree edges go between two leaves of the tree. We then give two different top-down coloring algorithms. Both algorithms differ from known techniques for a 3/2-approximation in unweighted TAP and current attempts to reach a 3/2-approximation for weighted TAP. The first algorithm we describe always gives a 2-approximation for any feasible fractional solution to the natural edge cover LP. When the fractional solution is such that all the edges with non-zero weight are at least $\alpha$, then this algorithm achieves a $2/(1+\alpha)$-approximation. We propose a new conjecture on extreme points of LP relaxations for the problem, which if true, will lead to a constructive proof of an integrality gap of at most 3/2 for weighted TAP. In the second algorithm, we introduce simple valid constraints to the edge cover LP. In this algorithm, we focus on deficient edges, edges covered to an extent less than 4/3 in the fractional solution. We show that for fractional feasible solutions, deficient edges occur in node-disjoint paths in the tree. When the number of such paths is at most two, we give a top-down coloring algorithm which decomposes 3/2 times the fractional solution into a convex combination of integer solutions. We believe our algorithms will be useful in eventually resolving the integrality gap of linear programming formulations for TAP. We also investigate a variant of TAP where each edge in the solution must be covered by a cycle of length three. We give a $\Theta(\log n)$-approximation algorithm for this problem in the weighted case and a 4-approximation in the unweighted case.

Model-Agnostic Approximation of Constrained Forest Problems

Abstract:Constrained Forest Problems (CFPs) as introduced by Goemans and Williamson in 1995 capture a wide range of network design problems with edge subsets as solutions, such as Minimum Spanning Tree, Steiner Forest, and Point-to-Point Connection. While individual CFPs have been studied extensively in individual computational models, a unified approach to solving general CFPs in multiple computational models has been lacking. Against this background, we present the shell-decomposition algorithm, a model-agnostic meta-algorithm that efficiently computes a $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation to CFPs for a broad class of forest functions. To demonstrate the power and flexibility of this result, we instantiate our algorithm for 3 fundamental, NP-hard CFPs in 3 different computational models. For example, for constant $\epsilon$, we obtain the following $(2+\epsilon)$-approximations in the Congest model: 1. For Steiner Forest specified via input components, where each node knows the identifier of one of $k$ disjoint subsets of $V$, we achieve a deterministic $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation in $O(\sqrt{n}+D+k)$ rounds, where $D$ is the hop diameter of the graph. 2. For Steiner Forest specified via symmetric connection requests, where connection requests are issued to pairs of nodes, we leverage randomized equality testing to reduce the running time to $O(\sqrt{n}+D)$, succeeding with high probability. 3. For Point-to-Point Connection, we provide a $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation in $O(\sqrt{n}+D)$ rounds. 4. For Facility Placement and Connection, a relative of non-metric Facility Location, we obtain a $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation in $O(\sqrt{n}+D)$ rounds. We further show how to replace the $\sqrt{n}+D$ term by the complexity of solving Partwise Aggregation, achieving (near-)universal optimality in any setting in which a solution to Partwise Aggregation in near-shortcut-quality time is known.

Simpler Sequential and Parallel Biconnectivity Augmentation

Abstract:For a connected graph, a vertex separator is a set of vertices whose removal creates at least two components and a minimum vertex separator is a vertex separator of least cardinality. The vertex connectivity refers to the size of a minimum vertex separator. For a connected graph $G$ with vertex connectivity $k (k \geq 1)$, the connectivity augmentation refers to a set $S$ of edges whose augmentation to $G$ increases its vertex connectivity by one. A minimum connectivity augmentation of $G$ is the one in which $S$ is minimum. In this paper, we focus our attention on connectivity augmentation of trees. Towards this end, we present a new sequential algorithm for biconnectivity augmentation in trees by simplifying the algorithm reported in \cite{nsn}. The simplicity is achieved with the help of edge contraction tool. This tool helps us in getting a recursive subproblem preserving all connectivity information. Subsequently, we present a parallel algorithm to obtain a minimum connectivity augmentation set in trees. Our parallel algorithm essentially follows the overall structure of sequential algorithm. Our implementation is based on CREW PRAM model with $O(\Delta)$ processors, where $\Delta$ refers to the maximum degree of a tree. We also show that our parallel algorithm is optimal whose processor-time product is O(n) where $n$ is the number of vertices of a tree, which is an improvement over the parallel algorithm reported in \cite{hsu}.

Abstract:Phylogenetic trees are leaf-labelled trees, where the leaves correspond to extant species (taxa), and the internal vertices represent ancestral species. The evolutionary history of a set of species can be explained by more than one phylogenetic tree, giving rise to the problem of comparing phylogenetic trees for similarity. Various distance metrics, like the subtree prune-and-regraft (SPR), tree bisection reconnection (TBR) and nearest neighbour interchange (NNI) have been proposed to capture this similarity. The distance between two phylogenetic trees can also be measured by the size of a Maximum Agreement Forest (MAF) on these trees, as it has been shown that the rooted subtree prune-and-regraft distance is 1 less than the size of a MAF. Since computing a MAF of minimum size is an NP-hard problem, approximation algorithms are of interest. Recently, it has been shown that the MAF on k(>=2) trees can be approximated to within a factor of 8. In this paper, we improve this ratio to 3. For certain species, however, the evolutionary history is not completely tree-like. Due to reticulate evolution two gene trees, though related, appear different, making a phylogenetic network a more appropriate representation of reticulate evolution. A phylogenetic network contains hybrid nodes for the species evolved from two parents. The number of such nodes is its hybridization number. It has been shown that this number is 1 less than the size of a Maximum Acyclic Agreement Forest (MAAF). We show that the MAAF for k(>= 2) phylogenetic trees can be approximated to within a factor of 3.

A Simple 2-Approximation for Maximum-Leaf Spanning Tree

Abstract:For an $m$-edge connected simple graph $G$, finding a spanning tree of $G$ with the maximum number of leaves is MAXSNP-complete. The problem remains NP-complete even if $G$ is planar and the maximal degree of $G$ is at most four. Lu and Ravi gave the first known polynomial-time approximation algorithms with approximation factors $5$ and $3$. Later, they obtained a $3$-approximation algorithm that runs in near-linear time. The best known result is Solis-Oba, Bonsma, and Lowski's $O(m)$-time $2$-approximation algorithm. We show an alternative simple $O(m)$-time $2$-approximation algorithm whose analysis is simpler. This paper is dedicated to the cherished memory of our dear friend, Professor Takao Nishizeki.

Dual-Based Approximation Algorithms for Cut-Based Network Connectivity Problems

Abstract:We consider a variety of NP-Complete network connectivity problems. We introduce a novel dual-based approach to approximating network design problems with cut-based linear programming relaxations. This approach gives a $3/2$-approximation to Minimum 2-Edge-Connected Spanning Subgraph that is equivalent to a previously proposed algorithm. One well-studied branch of network design models ad hoc networks where each node can either operate at high or low power. If we allow unidirectional links, we can formalize this into the problem Dual Power Assignment (DPA). Our dual-based approach gives a $3/2$-approximation to DPA, improving the previous best approximation known of $11/7\approx 1.57$. Another standard network design problem is Minimum Strongly Connected Spanning Subgraph (MSCS). We propose a new problem generalizing MSCS and DPA called Star Strong Connectivity (SSC). Then we show that our dual-based approach achieves a 1.6-approximation ratio on SSC. As a consequence of our dual-based approximations, we prove new upper bounds on the integrality gaps of these problems.

Abstract:The 2-Vertex-Connected Spanning Subgraph problem (2VCSS) is among the most basic NP-hard (Survivable) Network Design problems: we are given an (unweighted) undirected graph $G$. Our goal is to find a subgraph $S$ of $G$ with the minimum number of edges which is $2$-vertex-connected, namely $S$ remains connected after the deletion of an arbitrary node. 2VCSS is well-studied in terms of approximation algorithms, and the current best (polynomial-time) approximation factor is $10/7$ by Heeger and Vygen [SIDMA'17] (improving on earlier results by Khuller and Vishkin [STOC'92] and Garg, Vempala and Singla [SODA'93]).

Improved Approximation Algorithms by Generalizing the Primal-Dual Method Beyond Uncrossable Functions

Abstract:We address long-standing open questions raised by Williamson, Goemans, Vazirani and Mihail pertaining to the design of approximation algorithms for problems in network design via the primal-dual method (Combinatorica 15(3):435-454, 1995). Williamson et al. prove an approximation guarantee of two for connectivity augmentation problems where the connectivity requirements can be specified by so-called uncrossable functions. They state: ``Extending our algorithm to handle non-uncrossable functions remains a challenging open problem. The key feature of uncrossable functions is that there exists an optimal dual solution which is laminar. This property characterizes uncrossable functions\dots\ A larger open issue is to explore further the power of the primal-dual approach for obtaining approximation algorithms for other combinatorial optimization problems.'' Our main result proves that the primal-dual algorithm of Williamson et al. achieves an approximation ratio of 16 for a class of functions that generalizes the notion of an uncrossable function. There exist instances that can be handled by our methods where none of the optimal dual solutions has a laminar support. We present three applications of our main result. (1) A 16-approximation algorithm for augmenting a family of small cuts of a graph $G$. (2) A $16 \cdot {\lceil k/u_{min} \rceil}$-approximation algorithm for the Cap-$k$-ECSS problem which is as follows: Given an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$ with edge costs $c \in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}^E$ and edge capacities $u \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^E$, find a minimum-cost subset of the edges $F\subseteq E$ such that the capacity of any cut in $(V,F)$ is at least $k$; we use $u_{min}$ to denote the minimum capacity of an edge in $E$. (3) An $O(1)$-approximation algorithm for the model of $(p,2)$-Flexible Graph Connectivity.

A Simple 4-Approximation Algorithm for Maximum Agreement Forests on Multiple Unrooted Binary Trees

Abstract:We present a simple 4-approximation algorithm for computing a maximum agreement forest of multiple unrooted binary trees. This algorithm applies LP rounding to an extension of a recent ILP formulation of the maximum agreement forest problem on two trees by Van Wersch al. We achieve the same approximation ratio as the algorithm of Chen et al. but our algorithm is extremely simple. We also prove that no algorithm based on the ILP formulation by Van Wersch et al. can achieve an approximation ratio of $4 - \varepsilon$, for any $\varepsilon > 0$, even on two trees. To this end, we prove that the integrality gap of the ILP approaches 4 as the size of the two input trees grows.

Abstract:As a fundamental problem in graph theory, the minimum cut (min-cut) problem and solutions have many applications in networking related researches. A new approximation algorithm for the problem in undirected graph is proposed that can accelerate existing method by up to 6 orders of magnitude, while the preprocessing overhead is just a limited number of depth-first traversing. In the algorithm, after checking and recording the cut values of various types of traversal trees, the good upper bound on the min-cut value between any node pair can be approximated using the minimal cut value of all related traversal trees, and the upper bound is very likely to be the exact value. The independence between different traversal passes makes it ready for further acceleration using parallelization. The traversal tree-cut mapping algorithm with local pruning (TCLP) is compared with other methods using random, scale-free and real-world graphs, the results show that even the serial implementation of TCLP can achieve far larger acceleration ratio than existing methods while obtaining exact min-cut value of 99.9% node pairs. The results also indicate that TCLP is general enough to not rely on any special local graph structure and is seldom affected by graph types, thus can be used as an effective supplement to the existing methods.
A $\frac{4}{3}$-Approximation for the Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence Problem in DAGs

Abstract:The Maximum Leaf Spanning Arborescence problem (MLSA) is defined as follows: Given a directed graph $G$ and a vertex $r\in V(G)$ from which every other vertex is reachable, find a spanning arborescence rooted at $r$ maximizing the number of leaves (vertices with out-degree zero). The MLSA has applications in broadcasting, where a message needs to be transferred from a source vertex to all other vertices along the arcs of an arborescence in a given network. In doing so, it is desirable to have as many vertices as possible that only need to receive, but not pass on messages since they are inherently cheaper to build. We study polynomial-time approximation algorithms for the MLSA. For general digraphs, the state-of-the-art is a $\min\{\sqrt{\mathrm{OPT}},92\}$-approximation. In the (still APX-hard) special case where the input graph is acyclic, the best known approximation guarantee of $\frac{7}{5}$ is due to Fernandes and Lintzmayer: They prove that any $\alpha$-approximation for the \emph{hereditary $3$-set packing problem}, a special case of weighted $3$-set packing, yields a $\max\{\frac{4}{3},\alpha\}$-approximation for the MLSA in acyclic digraphs (dags), and provide a $\frac{7}{5}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem. In this paper, we obtain a $\frac{4}{3}$-approximation for the hereditary $3$-set packing problem, and, thus, also for the MLSA in dags. In doing so, we manage to leverage the full potential of the reduction provided by Fernandes and Lintzmayer. The algorithm that we study is a simple local search procedure considering swaps of size up to $10$. Its analysis relies on a two-stage charging argument.
