Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:Deep-ultraviolet (UV) up-conversion (UC) emissions in the region of 270 similar to 330 nm of Gd3+ under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode in hexagonal Yb3+-Tm3+-Gd3+ triply doped NaYF4 nanorods synthesized using a hydrothermal method are reported. Spectral analyses indicate that the UV UC emissions originate from highly efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+, then to Gd(3+)ions, and the intensity of the emission as well as the ratios of the emission peaks are strongly dependent on the doping concentrations and pump power. Abstract:Fluorescence thermometry manifests tremendous attention for their potential applications in the temperature sensing, especially for combining wide operating temperature range with high sensitivity. However, the use of thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) for temperature measurement has strict requirements for energy difference, which limits the sensitivity of detection. In order to satisfy higher sensitivity sensing, the pair of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs) of 4S3/2 and 3H4 has been innovatively designed. Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Abstract:The optical characteristics and varied applications of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years, such as in ratiometric thermometry. This review thoroughly examines the various synthesis processes utilized in producing these nanocrystals and their application in temperature sensing. Synthesis of NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals is a complex procedure that requires careful management of dopant concentrations, crystal phase, size, and shape. The distinctive luminescent characteristics of lanthanide ions, which facilitate the transformation of photons with low energy into emissions with higher energy, render NaYF4 nanocrystals suitable for ratiometric thermometry applications. We explore the fundamental concepts underlying upconversion luminescence in developing ratiometric temperature sensors. In this discourse, we examine the selection of lanthanide dopants, the mechanics underlying their energy transmission, and the development of customized sensor architectures. This review covers the recent progress and utilization of NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals in ratiometric thermometry, including diverse areas such as biological temperature detection, environmental surveillance, and materials research. We evaluate the obstacles and potential advancements in this domain, specifically emphasizing approaches to improving temperature sensors' precision, responsiveness, and applicability based on upconversion.
Upconversion Emission and Dual-Mode Sensing Characteristics of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ Microcrystals at High and Ultralow Temperatures

Abstract:In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.

Abstract:The optical temperature sensor based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) offers significant advantages for rapid and non-contact temperature measurements. However, the application of optical temperature sensors is limited by the challenge of identifying advanced materials with high response sensitivity. In this study, phosphor and single-crystal states stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2 with Er3+ doping were prepared by solid-state reaction method and Czochralski method, respectively, for promising optical thermometry applications. The structure of the phosphor and single-crystal state samples were investigated. High-purity upconversion (UC) emissions were achieved from stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+ samples with a maximum green-to-red ratio up to 70.3, which opens up numerous possibilities for their application as pure-green color converters. Besides, the UC emission spectra were monitored with respect to temperature, and the fluorescence intensity ratios (FIRs) of the 2H11/2→4I15/2 and 4S3/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions were investigated to evaluate the optical temperature sensing behaviors of NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+. Importantly, the distinctions of optical temperature sensing behaviors between phosphor and single-crystal state samples were analyzed. The results suggest that stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+, especially for single-crystal state NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+, hold great promise as FIR-based optical temperature sensors. In addition, the results can also open up the research interests for employing stoichiometric materials and single crystal materials as optical thermometry applications.

Abstract:Ratiometric luminescence thermometry is awfully applicable for non-contact temperature detection. Lanthanide luminescent materials available for high-performance ratiometric thermometry are still highly desirable until now. Herein, two novel upconversion phosphors, Yb3+/Ho3+ co-doped BiOF and BiF3 microcrystals, were synthesized and investigated systematically in terms of their crystalline structure, room temperature and temperature-dependent upconversion properties. Under 980 nm laser excitation, both microcrystals bring forth the characteristic emissions of Ho3+, with an identical overall luminescent color of green, while the intensity is much higher in BiF3:Yb/Ho microcrystals. When increasing temperature, the upconversion intensity at various wavelengths for both microcrystals is reduced, meanwhile fluorescence intensity ratios of both 545/656 nm and 752/656 nm decrease highly regularly, establishing a ratiometric thermometry therefore. BiF3:Yb/Ho microcrystals were demonstrated to have significantly superior thermometric performance than BiOF:Yb/Ho, and a high relative sensitivity up to 5.41% K-1 as well as a wide temperature sensing range of 298-673 K were obtained.
Up-conversion Luminescence, Thermometry, and Optical Heating Properties of Er3+- and Yb3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 Submicro-Particles Synthesized by a Simple Molten Salt Method.

Abstract:A series of Er3+- and Yb3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 (KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+) up-conversion (UC) submicro-particles have been synthesized for the first time by a simple and low-cost molten salt (MS) approach. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to analyze the phase and structure, and the prepared KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ samples exhibited a single phase tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure. The morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and submicro-rod-like particles were obtained for all samples. Under 980 nm excitation, KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ emitted bright green and weak red emissions which arose from the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions. The UC emission intensities and R-R/G (the intensity ratio between red and green emissions) were disclosed to be tightly dependent on the Yb3+ ion concentration, and the involved UC luminescence mechanism was studied. Meanwhile, the slope of logI-logP plots displayed an evident reduction with a T-s (sintering temperature) increase, which was ascribed to the saturation effect coming from the competition between UC processes and linear decay. Furthermore, temperature-dependent UC behavior and temperature sensing properties of KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ were probed based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique of UC green emission. The maximum sensor sensitivity (S) of KLN:0.04Er(3+)/Yb3+ (T-s = 900 degrees C) and KLN:0.16Er(3+)/Yb3+ (T-s = 900 degrees C) was determined to be as high as 10.90 x 10(-3) and 12.27 x 10(-3) K-1, respectively. We also showed that the particle size has an evident influence on S, which can be qualitatively interpreted by J-O theory. Thermal-cycling measurements were conducted at different temperatures, and good reliability and repeatability were confirmed. In addition, an obvious optical heating effect was also realized and the variation of temperature induced with a laser was about 32 K. These results reveal that KLN:xEr(3+)/Yb3+ submicroparticles with high sensor sensitivity and an obvious laser-induced thermal effect are suitable for future optical thermometers and optical heaters.
Up-Converting Luminescence and Temperature Sensing of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ Co-Doped NaYF4 Phosphors Operating in Visible and the First Biological Window Range

Abstract:Accurate and reliable non-contact temperature sensors are imperative for industrial production and scientific research. Here, Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors were studied as an optical thermometry material. The typical hydrothermal method was used to synthesize hexagonal Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors and the morphology was approximately rod-like. The up-conversion emissions of the samples were located at 475, 520, 550, 650, 692 and 800 nm. Thermo-responsive emissions from the samples were monitored to evaluate the relative sensing sensitivity. The thermal coupled energy level- and non-thermal coupled energy level-based luminescence intensity ratio thermometry of the sample demonstrated that these two methods can be used to test temperature. Two green emissions (520 and 550 nm), radiated from 2H11/2/4S3/2 levels, were monitored, and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.013 K−1 at 297 K. The emissions located in the first biological window (650, 692 and 800 nm) were monitored and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.027 (R692/650) and 0.028 K−1 (R692/800) at 297 K, respectively. These results indicate that Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors have potential applications for temperature determination in the visible and the first biological window ranges.

Abstract:Development of novel ultraviolet (UV) upconverting materials has been emerging as hot research topic for application in tunable UV laser, photocatalysis, sterilization, tagging, and most recently luminescence thermometry. We readily synthesized a series of Ho3+/Gd3+ co-doped LiYO2 upconverting phosphors by a traditional high-temperature reaction. Under excitation of a blue ~ 445 nm laser, the LiYO2:Ho3+,Gd3+ polycrystalline powders yield intense sharp ultraviolet B (UVB) upconversion luminescence from Gd3+ 6Pj (j = 7/2, 5/2, 3/2) excited states. By means of steady and dynamic photoluminescence spectra, we systematically investigated the involved two-photon absorption upconversion as well as the accompanying energy transfer processes between Ho3+ and Gd3+ ions in LiYO2 host lattice. Interestingly, the distinguishable UVB luminescence constituents from Gd3+ 6Pj excited states behave sensitive temperature dependence in 353-673 K. Sheding light onto thermal equilibriums between Gd3+ 6Pj UV-emitting levels, their luminescence intensity ratios follow Boltzmann statistics for application of new luminescence thermometry. For the scheme of 6P3/2-6P5/2 thermally coupled levels, it works over temperature range of 373-673 K with a maximum relative sensitivity (Sr) about 1.08% at 373 K, and the 6P7/2-6P5/2 counterpart works over 353-533 K with a maximum Sr about 0.80% at 353 K. Overall, our study provides new pathway to develop UV upconverting materials, and promotes application of Gd3+-related UV luminescence constituents in sensitive temperature sensing over a wide temperature range.

Optimizing optical thermometry with tri-doped Ba2GdV3O11 phosphors: Ratiometric and fluorescence lifetime analysis

Abstract:Optical sensor technology has undergone a transformative evolution with the advent of fluorescence ratio techniques (FIR) and fluorescence lifetime (FL) strategies, revolutionizing precision, performance, and reliability. This study delves into the synthesis of Ba2GdV3O11 phosphors doped with Ho3+/Nd3+, Er3+, and Yb3+, employing the sol-gel method for upconverting material fabrication. A thorough investigation into the structural, morphological, and optical properties of the synthesized phosphors is conducted. Excitation at 980 nm unveils upconversion (UC) emissions across green and red spectra. The intensities of the observed emission bands for Ho3+, Nd3+, and Er3+ demonstrate significant sensitivity to fluctuations in temperature. Temperature sensing relies on the 4S3/2 and 2H11/2 upconversion emissions bands, in addition to the emission lifetimes at 4S3/2. Enhanced thermal sensitivity values are attained, reaching up to 1.03 % K-1 and 1.07 % K-1 using the FIR strategy, and up to 0.146 % K-1 and 0.47 % K-1 with the FL strategy for Ho3+/Er3+/Yb3+ and Nd3+/Er3+/Yb3+ tri-doped Ba2GdV3O11 phosphors, respectively. Furthermore, the studied phosphors exhibit remarkable precision in detecting minute temperature changes (0.3 K), positioning them as promising candidates for precise temperature sensing. This study pioneers innovative methodologies to advance optical thermometry techniques, offering promising prospects for scientific and industrial applications reliant on precise optical temperature sensing.
Selective Enhancement of Green Upconversion Luminescence from NaYF4:Yb, Er Microparticles Through Ga3+ Doping for Sensitive Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Temperature sensors based on upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity ratio have attracted great attention due to the high sensitivity. The enhancement of UCL is helpful to improve the sensitivity of temperature sensor. Doping is an effective way to achieve the UCL enhancement. Ga3+ ions doped NaYF4:18%Yb,2%Er have been prepared through a facile one-pot solvothermal method. Upconversion (UC) emission intensity was significantly enhanced by introducing Ga(3+ )ions into the lattice of NaYF4:Yb,Er, especially the green UC emission. With Ga3+ concentration increasing, the size of the resulting NaYF4:Yb,Er,x%Ga particles decreases gradually. By doping 25% Ga3+, the green UC emission is increased by 30 times, while the red emission is enhanced by only 8 times. The morphology of particles and local symmetry around Er3+ ions have been changed, resulting in the selective enhancement of green UC emission. In addition, the temperature-dependent UCL properties of NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga and NaYF4:Yb,Er were investigated. The maximum thermal sensitivity of NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga could reach 0.0046 K-1 at 498 K. Therefore, NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga with strong green UCL could be served as a potential candidate for sensitive temperature sensing.

Abstract:Rare earth upconversion (UC) luminescent materials have important application prospect in the field of optical thermometry due to the unique fluorescence properties. To search for new and efficient UC luminescent materials for optical temperature measurement, a series of Gd3BWO9: Yb3+, Er3+ UC phosphors were prepared through a high temperature solid-state reaction process. X-ray diffraction data show that all of the Gd3BWO9: Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors have pure Gd3BWO9 crystal phase. Under the excitation of 980 nm pump laser, all of the Gd3BWO9: Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors exhibit bright green emission at 522 nm and 543 nm. The UC luminescence mechanism and energy transfer (ET) processes were revealed by studying the power dependency of the UC emission intensities, and the green emission lifetimes of 4S3/2-2H15/2 were also measured to prove the existence of ET between Yb3+ and Er3+ ions. Moreover, the optical thermometry performance of Gd3BWO9: 0.20 Yb3+, 0.02 Er3+ was investigated by using fluorescence intensity ratio techniques. At 303 K, the relative sensitivity of phosphor is 0.94% K−1. The results manifest that Yb3+- Er3+ co-doped Gd3BWO9 phosphors can be used in optical temperature measurement.

Abstract:High-efficiency upconversion (UC) luminescence has been a hot topic in the development of optical materials. In this study, an extremely strong green UC is successfully achieved in BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor through engineering the local environment around the luminescent centers, realized by Ca2+ doping. The green UC intensity of Ca2+ doped BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ is 6.5 and 2.3 times stronger than that of BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ and CaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+, respectively. Eu3+ ions are employed as the structure probe to detect the evolution of the crystal field symmetry with the increase of Ca2+ doping concentration, of which the results match well with the corresponding variation of the UC spectra. Meanwhile, the BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+/Ca2+ exhibits excellent temperature sensing performance based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between the thermally coupled 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 states of Er3+ ions. Its absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity for optical thermometry can reach 1.21% K-1 and 1.31% K-1, outperforming the majority of the same type optical thermometers. The temperature resolution of the present thermometer remains lower than 0.1 K within the temperature range of 298 K to 573 K. The intense green UC luminescence along with the outstanding thermal properties makes the BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor a promising candidate for optical thermometry.

Abstract:Er3+ and Yb3+ codoped Gd2Mo4O15 upconversion (UC) phosphors are synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The crystalline phase and morphology are studied in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under 980 nm laser excitation, the phosphors show a significant green UC luminescence contributed from 2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+, while the popular red 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 emission is quite weak. The temporal evolutions of Er3+ and Yb3+ emissions after 980 nm pulse excitation are studied as a function of Er3+ and Yb3+ concentrations. It is revealed that the weak red UC emission is due to its low emission efficiency in Gd2Mo4O15 that has a high cutoff phonon energy of 960 cm−1. The temperature sensing behaviors based on the thermally coupled 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels have been explored. A high absolute sensitivity of 0.00853 K−1 at 554 K is achieved and an excellent thermal durability is observed. The relative absorptance of 4I15/2 → 2H11/2 transition to the 4I15/2 → 4S3/2 transition is proposed as a good measure for evaluating the absolute sensitivity based on the comparative study of some familiar materials. Our results imply that Gd2Mo4O15 is a promising green UC phosphor for optical thermometry.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+)-doped upconversion luminescent (UCL) materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) property are endowed an exciting thermal enhancement performance. Hitherto, selectively thermal enhancement for the multi-narrow-band emissions of phosphor with NTE property is not implemented. Herein, Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor synthesized by the modified sol-gel method is explored in selectively enhanced green emission (Er3+: 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) due to the formation of Yb-MoO4 dimer at high ambient-temperature. The 54-fold selectively enhancement of green emission is obtained from 298 K to 523 K. In addition, the influences of dopant-concentration and calcination-temperature on UCL properties are analyzed. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) for 2H11/2/2F9/2 and 4S3/2/2F9/2 as well as (2H11/2 + 4S3/2)/2F9/2, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ sample could reach 0.14 K−1 at 298 K. All these indicate that this Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ material is a promising candidate for high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:Up-conversion fluorescent materials serve a significant function as the detection materials of temperature sensors. In this study, a series of green-emitting LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors applied in optical temperature sensing detection were successfully synthesized via the solid-state process in air. The crystal structure, luminescence properties, luminescence mechanism, and optical temperature sensing properties of samples were investigated. LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphor with excitation at 980 nm emits pronounced green emissions owing to the 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. The whole emission processes of LiLu0.72W2O8:0.24 Yb3+, 0.04Er3+ sample are all two-photon processes. Moreover, we apply thermal coupling levels (2H11/2, 4S3/2) for temperature sensing and the value of sensing sensitivity can reach the maximum of about 1.41% K−1. All the experimental results imply that LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors show good potential in temperature sensing.

Abstract:Water-soluble lanthanide (Ln(3+)) doped Bi2O3 nanospheres have been successfully prepared through a solid-state-chemistry thermal decomposition process. The nanospheres exhibit intense upconversion luminescence (UCL) by doping the Ln(3+) (Ln = Yb, Er/Ho/Tm) ions into the Bi2O3 host matrix under 980 nm excitation. The ratio of red/green emission of Bi2O3:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanospheres exhibits a significant change as the calcination temperature increases and the value could reach 105.6. Moreover, the UCL of Bi2O3:Yb(3+)/Tm(3+) nanospheres are temperature-sensitive, where the intensity ratios of 799 and 808 nm emissions increase monotonously with temperature. The MTT assay reveals that Bi2O3:Yb(3+)/Tm(3+) nanospheres exhibit good biocompatibility by grafting citric acid molecules on the surface. The application possibility of Bi2O3:Yb(3+)/Tm(3+) nanospheres as bioprobes for optical imaging in vivo is also confirmed by the high-contrast photoluminescence images between the background and the UCL imaging area.

Abstract:In this paper, Er3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2(1-x%)Lu2x %O3 solid solution was prepared through the sol-gel method, and the substitution of Y3+ by Lu3+ ions in Y2O3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction data. The up-conversion emissions of samples under 980 nm excitation and the relative up-conversion processes are investigated. The emission shapes do not vary with the change in doping concentration due to the unaltered cubic phase. The red-to-green ratio changes from 2.7 to 7.8 and then declines to 4.4 as the doping concentration of Lu3+ increases from 0 to 100. The emission lifetimes of green and red have similar variation: the emission lifetime decreases with doping concentration changing from 0 to 60 and rises as the doping concentration continues to increase. The reason why the emission ratio and lifetime change could be originated to the exacerbation of cross-relaxing process and the change of radiative transition probabilities. The temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) shows that all samples can be used in noncontact optical temperature sensing, and the method of local structure distortion can be used to improve sensitivity further. The max sensing sensitivities of FIR based on R 538/563 and R red/green reach 0.011 K-1 (483 K) and 0.21 K-1 (300 K). The results display that Er3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2(1-x %)Lu2x %O3 solid solution can be potential candidates for optical temperature sensing in different temperature ranges.
