Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.

Abstract:A new beam structure with periodically attached multioscillators is proposed based on the idea of locally resonant (LR) phononic crystals (PCs) to reduce flexural vibrations in the frequency-multiplication ranges. Wave band structures of the new beam are derived by using the transfer matrix method. The multiple band gaps in the beam are then verified by the frequency response function (FRF), which is calculated through the finite element method. In addition, simplified models are proposed, which contribute to the calculation of the edge frequencies of the band gaps and enhance the understanding of the LR mechanism of PCs. The accuracy of the simplified models is proven by comparing them with the results derived from the analytical model under different beam structure parameters. The results suggest that lower frequencies and ranges of frequency multiplications can be achieved in the band gaps which are obtained from the new beam structure with multioscillators in a unit cell. Therefore, the ideas presented in this paper have the potential to be used in developing new devices with frequency-multiplication characteristics for vibration isolation or noise control in aerospace and civil structures.
Free and forced wave propagation in beam lattice metamaterials with viscoelastic resonators

Abstract:Beam lattice materials are characterized by a periodic microstructure realizing a geometrically regular pattern of elementary cells. In these microstructured materials, the dispersion properties governing the free dynamic propagation of elastic waves can be studied by formulating parametric lagrangian models and applying the Floquet-Bloch theory. Within this framework, governing the wave propagation by means of spectral design techniques and/or energy dissipation mechanisms is a major issue of theoretical and applied interest. Specifically, the wave propagation can be inhibited by purposely designing the microstructural parameters to open band gaps in the material spectrum at target center frequencies. Based on these motivations, a general dynamic formulation for determining the dispersion properties of beam lattice metamaterials, equipped with local resonators is presented. The mechanism of local resonance is realized by tuning periodic auxiliary masses, viscoelastically coupled with the beam lattice microstructure. As peculiar aspect, the viscoelastic coupling is derived by a mechanical formulation based on the Boltzmann superposition integral, whose kernel is approximated by a Prony series. Consequently, the free propagation of damped waves is governed by a linear homogeneous system of integral-differential equations of motion. Therefore, differential equations of motion with frequency-dependent coefficients are obtained by applying the bilateral Laplace transform. The corresponding complex-valued branches characterizing the dispersion spectrum are determined and parametrically analyzed. Particularly, the spectra corresponding to Taylor series approximations of the equation coefficients are investigated.

Wave propagation in elastic metamaterial beams and plates with interconnected resonators

Abstract:In this work, new beam and plate metamaterials with interconnected local resonators are proposed. This design promotes the splitting and coupling between transverse and rotational vibration modes of the resonator chain. It produces a particular band structure with two band gaps: a wide band gap opens at the in-phase transverse natural frequency of the resonator chain and a second band gap, with narrower width, appears at higher frequencies. The Timoshenko beam and Mindlin–Reissner plate models are used to compute the band structure as well as the dynamic forced response. A parametric analysis of the band gaps is performed by varying the interconnection properties. The metamaterial plate presents a directional wave propagation pattern due to partial band gaps. In addition, a metamaterial beam manufactured by additive manufacturing is investigated. The experimental results are in agreement with the numerical predictions. Therefore, the proposed concept showed to be promising for metamaterial design aiming at creating singular band gaps with broadband absorption and directional/focalization features.

Tuning Bandgaps in Metastructured Beams: Numerical and Experimental Study

Abstract:Tunable metastructures (including phononic crystals and metamaterials) have the unique advantage that one can change the operating frequency and acoustic wave characteristics as needed. In this paper, the bandgap characteristics and their controllability of a metastructured beam with mass-spring oscillators and under an axial force are investigated in depth both by the finite element method and by experiment. The experimental and numerical results indicate that there is one local resonance (LR) bandgap and multiple Bragg scattering (BS) bandgaps. The width and position of each bandgap can be tuned effectively by adjusting the axial force, lattice constant, and spring stiffness, and a super wide pseudo-gap can be obtained under suitable conditions. By integrating different mass-spring oscillators into one metastructured beam, the bandgap width can be broadened and pseudogap- like characteristics can be achieved. By changing the number of different oscillators, the propagating distance of elastic waves in the beam can also be controlled. It is further revealed that point defects have a large influence on the BS bandgaps but little effect on the LR bandgap. The present work provides an important reference for the optimal design of adjustable high-performance metastructures.

Abstract:Band gaps appear in the frequency spectra of periodic materials and structures. In this work we examine flexural wave propagation in beams and investigate the effects of the various types and properties of periodicity on the frequency band structure, especially the location and width of band gaps. We consider periodicities involving the repeated spatial variation of material, geometry, boundary and/or suspended mass along the span of a beam. In our formulation, we implement Bloch’s theorem for elastic wave propagation and utilize Timoshenko beam theory for the kinematical description of the underlying flexural motion. For the calculation of the frequency band structure we use the transfer matrix method, derived here in generalized form to enable separate or combined consideration of the different types of periodicity. Our results provide band-gap maps as a function of the type and properties of periodicity, and as a prime focus we identify and mathematically characterize the condition for the transition between Bragg scattering and local resonance, each being a unique wave propagation mechanism, and show the effects of this transition on the lowest band gap. The analysis presented can be extended to multi-dimensional phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials.

Abstract:IntroductionArtificial materials, known as phononic crystals (PCs) and acoustics/elastic metamaterials (AMs/EMs), have been proved to have band-gaps within which no flexural wave can propagate through, which have received great attentions. Among AMs/EMs, locally resonant (LR) beams are frequently encountered in the field of mechanical, civil and aeronautical engineering. However, the analysis of finite LR beams lacks of an efficient and exact approach.ObjectivesThe primary objective of this study is to employ and develop an exact and efficient wave-based vibration analysis approach to study a finite Timoshenko LR beam carrying periodic separated force and moment type resonators.MethodsThe proposed wave-based analysis approach is a powerful method that provides the exact solution in vibration analysis for structural waves that propagate along uniform structural elements and reflect and transmit at structural discontinuities. With the approach, the modeling and analysis process can be well simplified, which improves the efficiency in the design and analysis of finite LR beams.ResultsThe frequency response results with three sets of resonators obtained through wave-based analysis approach show great agreements with both simulation and experimental results. Moreover, the measured results of the resonator with higher natural frequency show the promising advantage in achieving broader band-gap in low-frequency range, because the propagation attenuation in the experiment causes the absence of the narrow pass-bands which exists in the theoretical results.ConclusionThis paper proves that the wave-based vibration analysis approach was an exact and efficient method in solving complex vibration problem in finite periodic LR structures. In addition, the rich dispersion relation and wide band-gap property of the separated force and moment type resonators are demonstrated with the theoretical, simulation, and experimental results.

Non-Reciprocal Wave Propagation in Spatiotemporal Periodic Structures

Abstract:We study longitudinal and transverse wave propagation in beams with elastic properties that are periodically varying in space and time. Spatiotemporal modulation of the elastic properties breaks mechanical reciprocity and induces one-way propagation. We follow an analytic approach to characterize the non-reciprocal behavior of the structures by analyzing the symmetry breaking of the dispersion spectrum, which results in the formation of directional band gaps and produces shifts of the First Brilloin Zone limits. This approach allows us to relate position and width of the directional band gaps to the modulation parameters. Moreover, we identify the critical values of the modulation speed to maximize the non-reciprocal effect. We numerically verify the theoretical predictions by using a finite element model of the modulated beams to compute the transient response of the structure. We compute the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the collected displacement fields to calculate numerical band diagrams, showing excellent agreement between theoretical and numerical dispersion diagrams.

Abstract:Destructive interference-based metamaterials have shown excellent characteristics in elastic wave manipulation and vibration attenuation. Nevertheless, challenges persist in the application due to limited space and lightweight design, as current metastructures require additional beam structure. To simplify the design of metamaterials for flexural wave manipulation, this paper presents a new class of embedded phononic crystal for manipulating flexural wave propagation in both one and two-dimensional space by taking advantage of destructive interference, which can effectively suppress the mechanical vibration of a beam structure with a broad band gap. The flexural wave dispersion characteristic in a non-uniform beam structure is derived based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and an embedded phononic structure with the mechanism of destructive interference is presented to demonstrate its effectiveness in mitigating mechanical vibration. Subsequently, four typical units of embedded phononic structures are designed for attenuating flexural wave propagation in a beam structure. Finally, both numerical simulations, including one and two-dimensional phononic crystals, and physical experiments are implemented to evaluate the performance of the presented metastructure for flexural wave manipulation, which indicates that the proposed embedded phononic structures can effectively mitigate structural vibration in the low-frequency domain. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to design the metabeam with embedded phononic structures by taking advantage of destructive interference.

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that the mechanical properties of bioinspired periodic composite materials can be strongly influenced by finite deformation effects, leading to highly nonlinear static and dynamic behaviors at multiple length scales. For instance, in porous periodic nacre-like microstructures, microscopic and macroscopic instabilities may occur for a given uniaxial loading process and, as a consequence, wave attenuation properties may evolve as a function of the microstructural evolution, designating it as metamaterials. The numerical outcomes provide new opportunities to design bioinspired, soft composite metamaterials characterized by high deformability and enhanced elastic wave attenuation capabilities given by the insertion of voids and lead cores.

Abstract:Elastic metamaterials with locally resonant components exhibit unique band-gap behavior that can be applied to control wave propagation in flexural beams. Previous studies mainly emphasized the utilization of transversal deformations of flexural beams. A novel metamaterial configuration is presented in this work; in particular, to obtain a wide band gap in low-frequency ranges with reduced expenses in associated mass, inerter-based resonators and cantilevered deformations caused by the rotation of flexural beams are combined. The study is performed by using an analytical approach based on the finite element (FE) method and the Floquet-Bloch theorem. Both the wavenumber-frequency and the damping ratio-frequency relationships and relevant band structures are set. These two types of band structures are further considered for the investigation of the effects of various system parameters on the band-gap behavior and wave attenuation performance in the whole frequency range. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed concept is validated by means of numerical examples.

Abstract:A practical metamaterial lattice is constructed by integrating curved beams, four-link mechanisms, and cantilever beams with lumped masses. It can generate two complete low-frequency bandgaps due to the lateral local resonance, inertia mass, and the main chain. The effective mass density and stiffness are obtained using different effective models, which show negative within the bandgaps. The analysis of the energy distribution and the space wave attenuation reveals that the metamaterial can attenuate the elastic waves in an exponential form within the bandgaps along the lattice. The finite element model is established to show the dynamic behaviour of the elastic wave propagation in the frequency domain and transient domain. Both results show that waves can be efficiently blocked within the bandgaps, while outside the bandgaps, waves can propagate without any attenuation. Finally, the experimental model of practical metamaterial is constructed, and the test piece is excited by a force hammer. Experimental results verify that the practical metamaterial can efficiently suppress the vibration within the bandgap frequency and validate the accuracy of the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:Flexible mechanical metamaterials are compliant structures engineered to achieve unique properties via the large deformation of their components. While their static character has been studied extensively, the study of their dynamic properties is still at an early stage, especially in the nonlinear regime induced by their high deformability. Nevertheless, recent studies show that these systems provide new opportunities for the control of large amplitude elastic waves. Here, we summarize the recent results on the propagation of nonlinear waves in flexible elastic metamaterials, and highlight possible new research directions.

Non-reflective traveling waves in finite thin beams: A parametric study

Abstract:In the present study, the authors introduce a geometrically improved model inspired by the mammalian basilar membrane's properties and special vibratory behavior while conducting a parametric investigation. The goal of this model is to mimic the broadband non-reflective traveling wave response to excitation frequencies, as observed in the basilar membrane. Simple structural elements, such as beams, springs, and dashpots are utilized for this purpose. Therefore, the beam's equation of motion is developed using Hamilton's principle, and the Galerkin method is implemented as the discretization scheme. Then, the model is verified by comparing its outcome to results presented in the literature. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to reveal the effect of different parameters, i.e., the absorber's location and coefficients' values, excitation frequency, geometric tapering, and material grading on the non-reflective traveling wave response of the beam. The results reveal that traveling waves and their quality are strongly dependent on these parameters. In addition, this study suggests that adopting a single spring-damper system within the span of the beam as the wave reflection absorber may not address the entire bandwidth.

Abstract:In the present work, a full nonlinear Timoshenko beam employing nonlinear shape functions is developed. The extended Hamilton principle is employed for deriving the differential equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions. The general form of the boundary conditions is then utilized to determine the static solution of the beam motion. Using this solution for the deformation and rotation of the beam, the nonlinear shape functions of the beam are identified, which leads to the linear and nonlinear mass and stiffness matrices of the Timoshenko beam element. The nonlinear dispersion diagram incorporating the non-linear corrections is obtained using the Linstedt-Poincaré perturbation method. An analysis of the effect of internal transverse shear and bending on the nonlinear dispersion characteristics of wave propagation in two-dimensional periodic network materials made of nonlinear Timoshenko beams is done. The formulated theory shows that the percentage of correction factor of the nonlinear kinematics versus the linear dynamical behavior is inversely proportional to the frequency amplitude. The shear and extension modes are shown to have the higher effect in the non-linear correction term in comparison to the flexural mode.

Abstract:The method of reverberation-ray matrix (MRRM) is modified for the dynamic response analysis of beam structures with rigid components. The wave expressions for the beam structures are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory, and the MRRM formulations are obtained through the compatibility conditions of displacements and joint coupling equations by considering the effects of rigid components. An application of this method is considered in the context of a phononic crystal with spring-mass-like resonators. The proposed resonant unit consists of a large mass-like central component connected to thin beams that serve as springs. The large central component can be approximated as a rigid body. Using the MRRM and the finite element method (FEM), the band diagrams and the transmission spectrums are calculated. The innovative cell offers the advantage of producing lower and wider bandgaps when compared to traditional lattice structures. The accuracy of the MRRM is verified with the FEM. The current research provides a vibration analysis approach for beam structures with rigid components and the analysis of phononic crystals serves as a reference for structural design.

Abstract:Elastic wave propagation in various periodic metastructures and its application to wave filtering, vibration isolation, acoustic cloaking, etc., have gained significant attention among researchers in recent years. Despite the presence of band gaps, traditional lattice structures lack dynamic tunability. The solution lies in using tensegrity as unit cells. This article presents analysis of tunable wave propagation through a metastructure formed by tessellation of a 2D tensegrity unit cell in one dimension. Equations of motion of the unit cell are derived with consideration of flexibility and distributed mass of the bars, which is often neglected in the literature. The formulation is extended for wave dispersion analysis using the Floquet–Bloch theory. Next, the order of the formulation is reduced for decoupled analysis of symmetric and antisymmetric modes. The dispersion relations for different modes have been validated with nonlinear as well as linearized frequency response analysis under impulse load. Next, the effect of rest length of strings and alternating arrangement of bars on band gaps is studied in detail.

The relaxed linear micromorphic continuum: existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence in dynamics, submitted, 2013, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1308.3762" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1308.3762">arXiv:1308.3762</a>] has been used to study wave propagation in unbounded continua with microstructure. By studying dispersion relations for the considered relaxed medium, we are able to disclose precise frequency ranges (band-gaps) for which propagation of waves cannot occur. These dispersion relations are strongly nonlinear so giving rise to a macroscopic dispersive behavior of the considered medium. We prove that the presence of band-gaps is related to a unique elastic coefficient, the so-called Cosserat couple modulus $\mu_{c}$, which is also responsible for the loss of symmetry of the Cauchy force stress tensor. This parameter can be seen as the trigger of a bifurcation phenomenon since the fact of slightly changing its value around a given threshold drastically changes the observed response of the material with respect to wave propagation. We finally show that band-gaps cannot be accounted for by classical micromorphic models as well as by Cosserat and second gradient ones. The potential fields of application of the proposed relaxed model are manifold, above all for what concerns the conception of new engineering materials to be used for vibration control and stealth technology.

Abstract:This paper first employs and develops an exact wave-based vibration analysis approach to investigate a finite Timoshenko beam carrying periodic two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) uncoupled force-moment type resonators. In the approach, vibrations are described as structural waves that propagate along uniform structural elements and reflected and transmitted at structural discontinuities. Each uncoupled force-moment type resonator is considered as a cell which injects waves into the distributed beam through the transverse force and the bending moment at the attached point. By assembling wave relations of the cells into the beam, the forced vibration problem of the locally resonant (LR) structure is turned to be the solution to a related set of matrix equations. In addition, the parametric analysis provides an efficient method to obtain wide low-frequency range band-gaps. Accuracy of the proposed wave-based vibration analysis approach is demonstrated by the simulated and measured results of two sets of beam-like resonator samples.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable beam-type metamaterial composed of elastic base beams and periodically arrayed active beam-type resonators is designed and analyzed theoretically. The piezoelectric shunted array technique is applied to each engineered resonator, so that the band structure in the system can be actively controlled. Based on spectral element method, the dispersion relation of an infinite system as well as the transmission equation of a finite system are obtained explicitly. The effects of negative capacitance shunt and negative capacitance enhanced resonant shunt on band structures are considered numerically. It is shown that, on one hand, the negative capacitance shunts can sensitively control the widths and locations of local resonance band gaps. On the other hand, when a negative capacitance enhanced resonant shunt is applied, the enhanced meta-damping phenomenon emerges, leading to an extra wide and low-frequency band gap. The resistance in the shunt induces damping to the system, which together with the local resonance motion gives rise to meta-damping behavior. Such effect is further enhanced by negative capacitance, which increases the system electromechanical coupling property. Numerical simulations also show that such novel band gap can be realized only when the negative capacitance is close to the instability boundary and resistance in a certain region. In addition, the inductance of shunt can optimize the attenuation performance distribution in the extra broad band gap. Particularly, the transmission analyses show that the attenuation property of such extra wide band gap is as good as the general Bragg scattering band gaps. Such extremely wide and low-frequency band gap can be used for a wide range of engineering applications such as vibration suppression, sound absorption, acoustic filter, etc.
