Abstract:The introduction of Tier 3 light-duty vehicles with reduced emissions began in New York State (NYS) in 2017, with required compliance by 2025. We hypothesized that improved air quality during the early implementation of Tier 3 (2017–2019) would result in reduced rates of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits for respiratory infection associated with increased PM 2.5 compared to 2014–2016 (pre-Tier 3). Using data on adult patients hospitalized or having an ED visit for influenza, upper respiratory infection, culture-negative pneumonia, or respiratory bacterial infection, living within 15 miles of six air quality monitoring sites in NY, and a case-crossover design and conditional logistic regression, we estimated the rates of respiratory infection hospitalizations and ED visits associated with increased ambient PM 2.5 concentrations in the previous 0–6 days and each week thereafter up to 1 month. Interquartile range (IQR) increases in PM 2.5 in the previous 6 days were associated with 4.6% (95% CI: − 0.5, 10.1) and 11.9% (95% CI = 6.1, 18.0) increased rates of influenza hospitalizations in 2014–2016 and 2017–2019, respectively. This pattern of larger relative rates in 2017–2019 observed at all lag times was only present in males hospitalized for influenza but not other infections or in females. The rates of respiratory infection visits associated with increased PM 2.5 were generally not reduced in this early Tier 3 implementation period compared to 2014–2016. Limited fleet penetration of Tier 3 vehicles and differences in particle deposition, infection type, and sex by period may all have contributed to this lack of improvement.

Abstract:Prior studies reported excess rates (ERs) of cardiorespiratory events associated with short-term increases in PM2.5 concentrations, despite implementation of pollution-control policies. In 2017, Federal Tier 3 light-duty vehicle regulations began, and to-date there have been no assessments of population health effects of the policy. Using the NYS Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) database, we obtained hospitalizations and ED visits with a principal diagnosis of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for residents living within 15 miles of six urban PM2.5 monitoring sites in NYS (2014-2019). We used a time-stratified case-crossover design and conditional logistic regression (adjusting for ambient temperature, relative humidity, and weekday) to estimate associations between PM2.5, POC (primary organic carbon), SOC (secondary organic carbon), and rates of respiratory disease hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits from 2014 to 2019. We evaluated demographic disparities in these relative rates and compared changes in ERs before (2014-2016) and after Tier 3 implementation (2017-2019). Each interquartile range increase in PM2.5 was associated with increased ERs of asthma or COPD hospitalizations and ED visits in the previous 7 days (ERs ranged from 1.1%-3.1%). Interquartile range increases in POC were associated with increased rates of asthma ED visits (lag days 0-6: ER = 2.1%, 95% CI = 0.7%, 3.6%). Unexpectedly, the ERs of asthma admission and ED visits associated with PM2.5, POC, and SOC were higher during 2017-2019 (after Tier 3) than 2014-2016 (before Tier-3). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease analyses showed similar patterns. Excess Rates were higher in children (<18 years; asthma) and seniors (≥65 years; COPD), and Black, Hispanic, and NYC residents. In summary, unanticipated increases in asthma and COPD ERs after Tier-3 implementation were observed, and demographic disparities in asthma/COPD and PM2.5, POC, and SOC associations were also observed. Future work should confirm findings and investigate triggering of respiratory events by source-specific PM.

Abstract:Background. Air pollution leads to many adverse health conditions, mainly manifested by respiratory or cardiac symptoms. Previous studies are limited as to whether air pollutants were associated to influenza-like illness (ILI). This study aimed to explore the association between air pollutants and outpatient visits for ILI, especially during an outbreak of influenza. Methods. Daily counts of hospital visits for ILI were obtained from Peking University Third Hospital between January 1, 2015, and March 31, 2018. A generalized additive Poisson model was applied to examine the associations between air pollutants concentrations and daily outpatient visits for ILI when adjusted for the meteorological parameters. Results. There were 35862 outpatient visits at the fever clinic for ILI cases. Air quality index (AQI), PM2.5, PM10, CO and O-3 on lag0 days, as well as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) on lag1 days, were significantly associated with an increased risk of outpatient visits for ILI from January 2015 to November 2017. From December 2017 to March 2018, on lag0 days, air pollutants PM2.5 [risk ratio (RR) = 0.971, 95% CI: 0.963-0.979], SO2 (RR = 0.892, 95% CI: 0.840-0.948) and CO (RR = 0.306, 95% CI: 0.153-0.612) were significantly associated with a decreased risk of outpatient visits for ILI. Interestingly, on the lag2 days, all the pollutants were significantly associated with a reduced risk of outpatient visits for ILI except for O-3. We did not observe the linear correlations between the outpatient visits for ILI and any of air pollutants, which were instead associated via a curvilinear relationship. Conclusions. We found that the air pollutants may be associated with an increased risk of outpatient visits for ILI during the non-outbreak period and with a decreased risk during the outbreak period, which may be linked with the use of disposable face masks and the change of outdoor activities. These findings expand the current knowledge of ILI outpatient visits correlated with air pollutants during an influenza pandemic.

Abstract:Background: There is good evidence that air pollution is a risk factor for adverse respiratory and vascular health outcomes. However, data are limited as to whether ambient fine particles contribute to the transmission of influenza and if so, how the association is modified by weather conditions.Objectives: We examined the relationship between ambient PM2.5 and influenza incidence at the national level in China and explored the associations at different temperatures.Methods: Daily data on concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 mu m(PM2.5) and influenza incidence countswere collected in 47 Chinese cities. A Poisson regression model was used to estimate the city-specific PM2.5-influenza association, after controlling for potential confounders. Then, a random-effect meta-analysis was used to pool the effects at national level. In addition, stratified analyses were performed to examine modification effects of ambient temperature.Results: For single lag models, the highest effect of ambient PM2.5 on influenza incidence appeared at lag day 2, with relative risk (RR) of 1.015 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.004, 1.025) associated with a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5. For moving average lag models, the significant association was found at lag 2-3 days, with RR of 1.020 (95% CI: 1.006, 1.034). The RR of influenza transmission associated with PM2.5 was higher for cold compared with hot days. Overall, 10.7% of incident influenza cases may result from exposure to ambient PM2.5.Conclusions: Ambient PM2.5 may increase the risk of exposure to influenza in China especially on cooler days. Control measures to reduce PM2.5 concentrations could potentially also be of benefit in lowering the risk of exposure and subsequent transmission of influenza in China. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Air pollutants can cause serious harm to human health and a variety of respiratory diseases. This study aimed to explore the associations between air pollutants and outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) under urbanization process in the sub-center of Beijing. The data of ILI in sub-center of Beijing from April 1, 2014 to December 31, 2020 were obtained from Beijing Influenza Surveillance Network. A generalized additive Poisson model was applied to examine the associations between the concentrations of air pollutants and daily outpatient visits for ILI when controlling meteorological factors and holidays. A total of 322,559 patients with ILI were included. The results showed that in the early urbanization period, the effects of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, O3, and CO on lag0 day, and PM2.5, PM10, O3, and CO on lag1 day were not significant. In the later urbanization period, AQI and the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO on lag1 day were all significantly associated with an increased risk of outpatient visits for ILI, which increased by 0.34% (95%CI 0.23%, 0.45%), 0.42% (95%CI 0.29%, 0.56%), 0.44% (95%CI 0.33%, 0.55%), 0.36% (95%CI 0.24%, 0.49%), 0.91% (95%CI 0.62%, 1.21%) and 0.38% (95%CI 0.26%, 0.49%). The concentration of O3 on lag1 day was significantly associated with a decreased risk of outpatient visits for ILI, which decreased by 0.21% (95%CI 0.04%, 0.39%). We found that the urbanization process had significantly aggravated the impact of air pollutants on ILI outpatient visits. These findings expand the current knowledge of ILI outpatient visits correlated with air pollutants under urbanization process.

Except for PM10,the concentrations of other air pollutants on lag1 day were not significantly associated with an increased risk of ILI outpatient visits during the COVID−19 stage. Influence of air pollution on influenza-like illness in China: A nationwide time-series analysis

Abstract:Summary Background Evidence concerning effects of air pollution on influenza-like illness (ILI) from multi-center is limited and little is known about how regional factors might modify this relationship. Methods In this ecological study, ILI cases defined as outpatients with temperature ≥38 °C, accompanied by cough or sore throat, were collected from National Influenza Surveillance Network in China. We adopted generalized additive model with quasi-Poisson to estimate province-specific association between air pollution and ILI in 30 Chinese provinces during 2015–2019, after adjusting for time trend and meteorological factors. We then pooled province-specific association by using random-effect meta-analysis. Potential effect modifications of season and regional characteristics were explored. Findings A total of 26, 004, 853 ILI cases and 777, 223, 877 hospital outpatients were collected. In general, effects of air pollutants were acute. An inter-quartile range increase of PM 2.5 , SO 2 , PM 10 , NO 2 and CO at lag0, and O 3 at lag0-2 was associated with 3.08% (95% CI: 1.91%, 4.27%), 3.00% (1.86%, 4.16%), 6.46% (4.71%, 8.25%), 7.21% (5.73%, 8.71%), 4.37% (3.05%, 5.70%), and −9.26% (−11.32%, −7.14%) change of ILI at national level, respectively. Associations between air pollutants and ILI varied by season and regions, with higher effect estimates in cold season, eastern and central regions and provinces with more humid condition and larger population. Interpretation This study indicated that most air pollutants increased the risk of ILI in China. Our findings might provide implications for the development of policies to protect public health from air pollution and influenza. Different effects of air pollutant concentrations on influenza A and B in Sichuan, China

Abstract:Background: The detrimental effects of air pollution on the respiratory system are well documented. Previous research has established a correlation between air pollutant concentration and the frequency of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness. However, studies investigating the variations in infection among different influenza subtypes remain sparse. We aimed to determine the correlation between air pollutant levels and different influenza subtypes in Sichuan Province, China. Methods: A generalized additive model and distributed lag nonlinear model were employed to assess the association between air pollutants and influenza subtypes, utilizing daily influenza data obtained from 30 hospitals across 21 cities in Sichuan Province. The analysis considered the temporal effects and meteorological factors. The study spanned from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019. To provide a more precise evaluation of the actual impact of air pollution on different subtypes of influenza, we also performed subgroup analyses based on factors such as gender, age, and geography within the population. Results: During the investigation, 17,462 specimens from Sichuan Province tested positive for influenza. Among these, 12,607 and 4855 were diagnosed with Flu A and B, respectively. The related risk of influenza A infection significantly increased following exposure to PM2.5 on Lag2 days (RR=1.008, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.000-1.016), SO2 and CO on Lag1 days (RR=1.121, 95 % CI: 1.032-1.219; RR=1.151, 95 % CI: 1.030-1.289), and NO2 on Lag0 day (RR=1.089, 95 % CI: 1.035-1.145). PM10 and SO2 levels on Lag0 day, PM2.5 levels on Lag1 day, and CO levels on Lag6 day, with a reduced risk of influenza B (RR=0.987, 95 % CI: 0.976-0.997; RR=0.817, 95 % CI: 0.676-0.987; RR=0.979, 95 % CI: 0.970-0.989; RR=0.814, 95 % CI: 0.561-0.921). Conclusion: The findings from the overall population and subgroup analyses indicated that the impact of air pollutant concentrations on influenza A and B is inconsistent, with influenza A demonstrating greater susceptibility to these pollutants. Minimizing the levels of SO2, CO, NO2, and PM2.5 can significantly decrease the likelihood of contracting influenza A. Analyzing the influence of environmental contaminants on different influenza subtypes can provide insights into seasonal influenza trends and guide the development of preventive and control strategies.
Lagging effects and prediction of pollutants and their interaction modifiers on influenza in northeastern China

Abstract:Abstract Background Previous studies have typically explored the daily lagged relations between influenza and meteorology, but few have explored seasonally the monthly lagged relationship, interaction and multiple prediction between influenza and pollution. Our specific objectives are to evaluate the lagged and interaction effects of pollution factors and construct models for estimating influenza incidence in a hierarchical manner. Methods Our researchers collect influenza case data from 2005 to 2018 with meteorological and contaminative factors in Northeast China. We develop a generalized additive model with up to 6 months of maximum lag to analyze the impact of pollution factors on influenza cases and their interaction effects. We employ LASSO regression to identify the most significant environmental factors and conduct multiple complex regression analysis. In addition, quantile regression is taken to model the relation between influenza morbidity and specific percentiles (or quantiles) of meteorological factors. Results The influenza epidemic in Northeast China has shown an upward trend year by year. The excessive incidence of influenza in Northeast China may be attributed to the suspected primary air pollutant, NO 2 , which has been observed to have overall low levels during January, March, and June. The Age 15–24 group shows an increase in the relative risk of influenza with an increase in PM 2.5 concentration, with a lag of 0–6 months (ERR 1.08, 95% CI 0.10–2.07). In the quantitative analysis of the interaction model, PM 10 at the level of 100–120 μg/m 3 , PM 2.5 at the level of 60–80 μg/m 3 , and NO 2 at the level of 60 μg/m 3 or more have the greatest effect on the onset of influenza. The GPR model behaves better among prediction models. Conclusions Exposure to the air pollutant NO 2 is associated with an increased risk of influenza with a cumulative lag effect. Prioritizing winter and spring pollution monitoring and influenza prediction modeling should be our focus.

Abstract:Air pollution in Beijing, especially PM2.5, has received increasing attention in the past years. Despite Beijing being one of the most polluted cities in the world, there has still been a lack of quantitative research regarding the health impact of PM2.5 on the impact of diseases in Beijing. In this study, we aimed to characterize temporal pattern of PM2.5 and its potential association with human influenza in Beijing.Based on the data collected on hourly ambient PM2.5 from year 2008 to 2013 and on monthly human influenza cases from 2008 and 2011, we investigated temporal patterns of PM2.5 over the five-year period and utilized the wavelet approach to exploring the potential association between PM2.5 and influenza.Our results found that ambient PM2.5 pollution was severe in Beijing with PM2.5 concentrations being significantly higher than the standards of the World Health Organization, the US EPA, and the Chinese EPA in the majority of days during the study period. Furthermore, PM2.5 concentrations in the winter heating seasons were higher than those in non-heating seasons despite high variations. We also found significant association between ambient PM2.5 peak and human influenza case increase with a delayed effect (e.g. delayed effect of PM2.5 on influenza).Ambient PM2.5 concentrations were significantly associated with human influenza cases in Beijing, which have important implications for public health and environmental actions.
Attributable Risks of Emergency Hospital Visits Due to Air Pollutants in China: A Multi-City Study.

Abstract:Air pollution is associated with risks of mortality in China, but the evidence is still limited for morbidity. This study aims to examine overall effects of ambient air pollutants on emergency hospital visits (EHVs) at the national level in China and calculate corresponding attributable risks. We collected daily data for EHVs from 33 largest hospitals in China between Oct 2013 and Dec 2014, as well as daily measurements of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5: particles with aerodynamic diameter < 10 mu m and 2.5 mu m, respectively), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) from 31 cities where the hospitals were located. Firstly, quasi-Poisson regression with a constrained distributed lag model (CDLM) was employed to examine city-specific associations of EHVs with each pollutant. Then, the effects at the national scale were pooled with a random-effect meta-analysis. Daily EHV5 was significantly associated with a 10 mu g/m3 increase in PM2.5 at lag 0-2 days [cumulative relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.006 (1.002,1.009)], PM10 at lag 0-1 days [1.004 (1.002,1.006)], NO2 at lag 0-1 days [1.015 (1.010,1.019)] and SO2 at lag 0-2 days [1.022 (1.014,1.030)]. The effect estimates were not modified by sex, but stronger effects were observed among children than adults. Overall, 3.34% of EHVs may result from exposure to ambient PM2.5, 3.96% to PM10, 5.90% to NO2 and 5.38% to SO2. Exposure to outdoor air pollution has acute effects on EHVs. Abstract:The Healthy China Initiative is a major health strategy being pursued by the country. To prevent and control different types of diseases as well as their complex variants, research on the spatio-temporal differentiation among and mechanisms of influence of epidemic diseases is growing worldwide. This study analyzed monthly data on the incidence of influenza by using different methods, including Moran's I, the hotspot analysis model, concentration analysis, and correlation analysis, to determine the characteristics of spatio-temporal differentiation in the incidence of influenza across prefecture-level cities in China from 2004 to 2017, and to examine its relationship with air pollution. According to the results, the overall incidence of influenza in China exhibited a trend of increase from 2004 to 2017, with small peaks in 2009 and 2014. More cases of influenza were recorded in the first and fourth quarters of each year. Regions with higher incidences of influenza were concentrated in northwestern and northern China, and in the coastal areas of southeastern China. Over time, the distribution of regions with a higher incidence of influenza has shifted from the west to the east of the country. A significant relationship was observed between the incidence of influenza and factors related to air pollution. The contents of five air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO) were significantly positively correlated with the incidence of influenza, with a decreasing order of contribution to it of SO2 > CO > NO2 > PM2.5 > PM10. The content of O3 in the air was negatively correlated with the incidence of influenza. The influence of air pollution-related factors on the incidence of influenza in different regions and seasons showed minor differences. The large-scale empirical results provided here can supply a scientific basis for governmental disease control authorities to formulate strategies for regional prevention and control.

Abstract:Background: Influenza is a serious public health problem, and its prevalence and spread show significant spatiotemporal characteristics. Previous studies have found that air pollutants are linked to an increased risk of influenza. However, the mechanism of influence and the degree of their association have not been determined. This study aimed to determine the influence of the air environment on the spatiotemporal distribution of influenza. Methods: The kernel density estimation and Getis-Ord Gi * statistic were used to analyze the spatial distribution of the influenza incidence and air pollutants in China. A simple analysis of the correlation between influenza and air pollutants was performed using Spearman's correlation coefficients. A linear regression analysis was performed to examine changes in the influenza incidence in response to air pollutants. The sensitivity of the influenza incidence to changes in air pollutants was evaluated by performing a gray correlation analysis. Lastly, the entropy weight method was used to calculate the weight coefficient of each method and thus the comprehensive sensitivity of influenza incidence to six pollution elements. Results: The results of the sensitivity analysis using Spearman's correlation coefficients showed the following ranking of the contributions of the air pollutants to the influenza incidence in descending order: SO 2 >NO 2 >CO> PM 2.5 >O 3 >PM 10 . The sensitivity results obtained from the linear regression analysis revealed the following ranking: CO>NO 2 >SO 2 >O 3 >PM 2.5 >PM 10. Lastly, the sensitivity results obtained from the gray correlation analysis showed the following ranking: NO 2 >CO>PM 10 >PM 2.5 >SO 2 >O 3. According to the sensitivity score, the study area can be divided into hypersensitive, medium-sensitive, and low-sensitive areas. Conclusion: The influenza incidence showed a strong spatial correlation and associated sensitivity to changes in concentrations of air pollutants. Hypersensitive areas were mainly located in the southeastern part of northeastern China, the coastal areas of the Yellow River Basin, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and surrounding areas, and the Yangtze River Delta. The influenza incidence was most sensitive to CO, NO 2 , and SO 2 , with the occurrence of influenza being most likely in areas with elevated concentrations of these three pollutants. Therefore, the formulation of targeted influenza prevention and control strategies tailored for hypersensitive, medium-sensitive, low-sensitive, and insensitive areas are urgently needed.

Impact of PM2.5 and ozone on incidence of influenza in Shijiazhuang, China: a time-series study

Abstract:Most of the studies are focused on influenza and meteorological factors for influenza. There are still few studies focused on the relationship between pollution factors and influenza, and the results are not consistent. This study conducted distributed lag nonlinear model and attributable risk on the relationship between influenza and pollution factors, aiming to quantify the association and provide a basis for the prevention of influenza and the formulation of relevant policies. Environmental data in Shijiazhuang from 2014 to 2019, as well as the data on hospital-confirmed influenza, were collected. When the concentration of PM2.5 was the highest (621 μg/m3), the relative risk was the highest (RR: 2.39, 95% CI: 1.10-5.17). For extremely high concentration PM2.5 (348 μg/m3), analysis of cumulative lag effect showed statistical significance from cumulative lag0-1 to lag0-6 day, and the minimum cumulative lag effect appeared in lag0-2 (RR: 0.760, 95% CI: 0.655-0.882). In terms of ozone, the RR value was 2.28(1.19,4.38), when O3 concentration was 310 μg/m3, and the RR was 1.65(1.26,2.15), when O3 concentration was 0 μg/m3. The RR of this lag effect increased with the increase of lag days, and reached the maximum at lag0-7 days, RR and 95% CI of slightly low concentration and extremely high concentration were 1.217(1.108,1.337) and 1.440(1.012,2.047), respectively. Stratified analysis showed that there was little difference in gender, but in different age groups, the cumulative lag effect of these two pollutants on influenza was significantly different. Our study found a non-linear relationship between two pollutants and influenza; slightly low concentrations were more associated with contaminant-related influenza. Health workers should encourage patients to get the influenza vaccine and wear masks when going out during flu seasons.
Ultrafine Particles and Hospital Visits for Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases in New York State

Abstract:Rationale: Exposure to particulate matter is associated with various adverse health outcomes. Ultrafine particles (UFPs; diameter <0.1 μm) are a unique public health challenge because of their size. However, limited studies have examined their impacts on human health, especially across seasons and demographic characteristics. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of UFP exposure on the risk of visiting the emergency department (ED) for a chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD) in New York State in 2013-2018. Methods: We used a case-crossover design and conditional logistic regression to estimate how UFP exposure led to CLRD-related ED visits. GEOS-Chem Advanced Particle Microphysics, a state-of-the-art chemical transport model with a size-resolved particle microphysics model, generated air pollution simulation data. We then matched UFP exposure estimates to geocoded health records for asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, unspecified bronchitis, and other chronic airway obstructions in New York State from 2013 through 2018. In addition, we assessed interactions with age, ethnicity, race, sex, meteorological factors, and season. Results: Each 1-(interquartile range [IQR]) increase in UFP exposure led to a 0.37% increased risk of a respiratory-related ED visit on lag 0-0, or the day of the ED visits, (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.23-0.52%) and a 1.81% increase on lag 0-6, or 6 days before the ED visit, (95% CI, 1.58-2.03%). The highest risk was in the emphysema subtype (lag 0-5, 4.18%; 95% CI, 0.16-8.37%), followed by asthma (lag 0-6, 2.00%), chronic bronchitis (lag 0-6, 1.78%), other chronic airway obstructions (lag 0-6, 1.60%), and unspecified bronchitis (lag 0-6, 1.49%). We also found significant interactions between UFP health impacts and season (Fall, 3.29%), temperature (<90th percentile, 2.27%), relative humidity (>90th percentile, 4.63%), age (children aged <18 yr, 3.19%), and sex (men, 2.06%) on lag 0-6. Conclusions: In this study, UFP exposure increased CLRD-related ED visits across all seasons and demographic characteristics, yet these associations varied according to various factors, which requires more research.
Comparison of wildfire smoke estimation methods and associations with cardiopulmonary-related hospital admissions

Abstract:Climate forecasts predict an increase in frequency and intensity of wildfires. Associations between health outcomes and population exposure to smoke from Washington 2012 wildfires were compared using surface monitors, chemical-weather models, and a novel method blending three exposure information sources. The association between smoke particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) and cardiopulmonary hospital admissions occurring in Washington from 1 July to 31 October 2012 was evaluated using a time-stratified case-crossover design. Hospital admissions aggregated by ZIP code were linked with population-weighted daily average concentrations of smoke PM2.5 estimated using three distinct methods: a simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model, a kriged interpolation of PM2.5 measurements from surface monitors, and a geographically weighted ridge regression (GWR) that blended inputs from WRF-Chem, satellite observations of aerosol optical depth, and kriged PM2.5. A 10 μg/m3 increase in GWR smoke PM2.5 was associated with an 8% increased risk in asthma-related hospital admissions (odds ratio (OR): 1.076, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.019-1.136); other smoke estimation methods yielded similar results. However, point estimates for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) differed by smoke PM2.5 exposure method: a 10 μg/m3 increase using GWR was significantly associated with increased risk of COPD (OR: 1.084, 95%CI: 1.026-1.145) and not significant using WRF-Chem (OR: 0.986, 95%CI: 0.931-1.045). The magnitude (OR) and uncertainty (95%CI) of associations between smoke PM2.5 and hospital admissions were dependent on estimation method used and outcome evaluated. Choice of smoke exposure estimation method used can impact the overall conclusion of the study.
The contribution of motor vehicle emissions to ambient fine particulate matter public health impacts in New York City: a health burden assessment

Abstract:BackgroundOn-road vehicles are an important source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in cities, but spatially varying traffic emissions and vulnerable populations make it difficult to assess impacts to inform policy and the public.MethodsWe estimated PM2.5-attributable mortality and morbidity from on-road vehicle generated air pollution in the New York City (NYC) region using high-spatial-resolution emissions estimates, air quality modeling, and local health incidence data to evaluate variations in impacts by vehicle class, neighborhood, and area socioeconomic status. We developed multiple ‘zero-out’ emission scenarios focused on regional and local cars, trucks, and buses in the NYC region. We simulated PM2.5 concentrations using the Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model at a 1-km spatial resolution over NYC and combined modeled estimates with monitored data from 2010 to 2012. We applied health impact functions and local health data to quantify the PM2.5-attributable health burden on NYC residents within 42 city neighborhoods.ResultsWe estimate that all on-road mobile sources in the NYC region contribute to 320 (95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 220–420) deaths and 870 (95 % CI: 440–1280) hospitalizations and emergency department visits annually within NYC due to PM2.5 exposures, accounting for 5850 (95 % CI: 4020–7620) years of life lost. Trucks and buses within NYC accounted for the largest share of on-road mobile-attributable ambient PM2.5, contributing up to 14.9 % of annual average levels across 1-km grid cells, and were associated with 170 (95 % CI: 110–220) PM2.5-attributable deaths each year. These contributions were not evenly distributed, with high poverty neighborhoods experiencing a larger share of the exposure and health burden than low poverty neighborhoods.ConclusionReducing motor vehicle emissions, especially from trucks and buses, could produce significant health benefits and reduce disparities in impacts. Our high-spatial-resolution modeling approach could improve assessment of on-road vehicle health impacts in other cities.

Abstract:Bipyridylium herbicides produce embryotoxic and teratogenic effects in dipteran, amphibian, avian, and mammalian organisms. Diquat dibromide, a bipyridylium compound, is commonly used as an aquatic herbicide. Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) eggs were exposed to diquat by immersing the eggs for 10 s in solutions of 0.88, 3.5, 7, 14, or 56 g/L on either d 4 or 21 of incubation. Application of diquat on d 4 yielded an estimated LC50 of 19.5 g/L through 18 d of incubation, and 9.6 g/L through hatching. Body and organ weights, and bone lengths of hatchlings did not differ between control and treatment groups with the exception of a slight increase in brain weight in the 14 g/L group. Malformations in diquat-treated embryos included defects of the brain, eye, bill, limb, and pelvis; skeletal scoliosis; and incomplete ossification. Subcutaneous edema was also present. Significant manifestations of oxidative stress were apparent in hatchlings and included increased hepatic thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) (lipid peroxidation) and decreased brain reduced glutathione (GSH). Brain protein-bound sulfhydryls (PBSH) increased. Diquat applied on d 21 of incubation yielded an estimated LC50 of 12.6 g/L through hatching. Exposure at this late stage of development did not produce deformities. Body and organ weights and, bone lengths of hatchlings did not differ between control and treatment groups. Significant manifestations of oxidative stress in hatchlings included decreased brain GSH, increased oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and ratio of GSSG to GSH. This study suggests that concentrations of diquat commonly used for aquatic weed control, when based upon the dilution effect of average water depth of the application area, would probably have little impact on mallard embryos. However, concentrations applied above ground to weeds and cattails along ditches could adversely affect the survival and development of mallard embryos, and presumably other avian species nesting in such habitats.
