Abstract:The land application of manure has been encouraged by various organizations, but the unreasonable manure application also can lead to apparent heavy metal (HM) accumulation in soil. In this study, three long-term field-scale studies under different agricultural systems (paddy fields with paddy upland rotation, orchard fields, and vegetable fields) were conducted to characterize the dynamic changes in the soil copper, zinc, arsenic, and lead concentrations after 4.5 or 7 years of manure fertilizer application. Four fertilization treatments were applied for each cultivation system: chemical fertilizer (CF), low manure application amount (T1), medium manure application amount (T2), and high manure application amount (T3). The results showed that copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) accumulated in the paddy fields while there were Cu and arsenic (As) accumulation in the orchard field. Besides, Zn, As, and Pb accumulation occurred in the vegetable field. The subsequent univariate and correlation analyses indicated that the continuous input of Cu, Zn, and As from manure fertilizer was an important contributor to their accumulation in soils, but Pb input showed limited effects. Further estimations based on the constructed fitting models showed that the environmental risk of HMs will exceed the threshold levels for agricultural soils in China in the next 6.41–12.36 years in paddy soils, 40–50 years in orchard soils, and 24.54–29.22 years in vegetable soils. In paddy soils, the recommended application amount of Zhongci organic fertilizer is 7,729 kg·hm–2 y–1 at a 20-year scale according to the secondary standard of agricultural production in China, whereas it is 26,150 kg·hm–2 y–1 in the orchard soil and 16, 229 kg·hm–2 y–1 in vegetable soil at a 50-year scale. This work provides a basis for the early warning and prediction of heavy metal pollution risks under manure application and organic fertilizer quality control from livestock and poultry manure.

Abstract:Film covers have been widely applied worldwide. However, the effects of long-term plastic film mulching use on heavy metal (HM) activity in soil remain unclear. This study focused on farmland in the upstream part of the Pearl River in China and collected 103 soil samples after 2, 5, and 15 years of plastic film mulching. The main environmental factors controlling microplastics (MPs), plasticizer phthalic acid esters (PAEs), HM pollution characteristics, and HM activity were analyzed. The results showed that Polyethylene (PE) and di(2-ethylhexyl) dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) were the main MPs and PAEs, respectively. The abundance of MPs and the concentrations of free HM ions (Cd, Cu, and Ni) in the soil solution increased with increasing plastic film mulching duration. The Partial Least Squares Path Model (PLS-PM) indicated that after plastic film mulching, soil chemical properties (pH/amorphous Fe) and biological properties (Dissolved organic carbon/ Easily oxidizable carbon/Microbial biomass carbon) were the main controlling factors for free and complexed HM ions (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Ni). These results suggest that, after plastic film mulching, MPs indirectly regulate HM activity by altering soil properties. This study provides a new perspective for the management of MPs and HM activities in agricultural ecosystems.
Distribution characteristics of plastic film residue in long-term mulched farmland soil

Abstract:Soil contamination from film debris following the prolonged application of mulching film has emerged as a worldwide concern. However, the extent that mulching films contribute to soil microplastics, and the spatial distribution of soil contamination from film debris remain unclear. In this study, the cotton field in Xinjiang (China), which underwent film mulching for a prolonged period of 5–30 years, was selected as the research location. A total of 360 soil samples were collected, aiming to study the spatial distribution characteristics of mulching film debris pollution. The samples were extracted using the density flotation method combined with stereomicroscopic; the source, composition, abundance, and distribution characteristics of soil MPs were identified by the scanning electron microscopic, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analyses. In soil mulched for a 30 year period, the abundance of microplastics across the studied soil depth (0–60 cm) was 78.51±2.57 n/(100 g). The μ-FTIR analyses revealed that the composition of the microplastics matched that of polyethylene materials. Therefore, plastic mulching could be inferred as a major contributor to microplastic pollution in agricultural lands. Overall, it is necessary to study the distribution characteristics of plastic film remaining for further study of plastic pollution in farmland soils.

Abstract:Plastic mulch film residues (PMFR) accumulated throughout mulching years can result in serious environmental problems, especially in hotter areas with frequent farming (e.g. the tropics). The effects of long-term mulching on the soil-microbe-plant system, however, are largely unknown. As mulching years is positively correlated with PMFR concentrations, we used a controlled pot experiment to investigate the effects of mulching years (20a: The concentration of PMFR is about 2 g kg-1, 60a: About 6 g kg-1) on rice growth, rhizosphere bacterial communities, and soil organic carbon (SOC) under different soil pH conditions. Mulching years reduced rice growth; 20a showed more negative effects than 60a on rice tillers number and biomass. PMFR changed the composition, diversity, and metabolic function of the rhizosphere bacterial communities. The content of SOC decreased as mulching residues increased; total organic carbon (TOC), soil organic matter (SOM), Fn (355), and humification index (HIX) declined by 30.24%, 55.97%, 59.74%, and 70.24%, respectively. Furthermore, significant correlations between bacterial communities and SOC were observed in the soil-microbe-plant system. PMFR showed stronger negative effects on rice growth in acidic soil (pH 4.5); however, in basic soil (pH 8.5), there were stronger variations within the bacterial communities and a more significant decline in SOC than acidic soil (pH 4.5). The results of this study are expected to provide theoretical references for understanding of the effects of PMFR on agroecosystems and preventing and controlling plastic pollution.

Abstract:Microplastics pollution has been threatening the global environmental security, in which agricultural activities are considered as a main source of microplastics occurrence in soils. However, little is known about the occurrence characteristics of microplastics in agricultural soils with long-term plastic film mulching. Therefore, the abundance, distribution, and composition of microplastics were investigated by analyzing 225 soil samples collected from typical maize ( Zea mays L.) planting zones with and without long-term (>20 years) plastic film mulching in northern China. Microplastics abundance in mulched soils (754 ± 477 items kg –1 ) was significantly higher than that in non-mulched soils (376 ± 149 items kg –1 ), which indicated that plastic film mulching contributed half of microplastics in soils. Moreover, microplastics abundance was significantly positively related to the length of time with film mulching applied. The percentage of microplastics <0.5 mm in mulched soils (50.9%) was significantly lower than that in non-mulched soils (62.2%). Microplastics abundance and size in mulched and non-mulched soils decreased with increased soil depth. Most microplastics were fragments of polypropylene, films of polyethylene, and fibers of polyester. The proportion of films in mulched soils was significantly higher than in non-mulched soils, whereas that of fibers was significantly higher in non-mulched soils. This study confirmed that long-term plastic film mulching increases microplastics pollution in agricultural soils, warranting further evaluation of the associated ecological risks of microplastics in soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Plastic mulching is suspected to be a significant source of microplastics in terrestrial environments owing to its intensive application and improper disposal. However, there has been a comparative lack of studies examining this hypothesis. In this study, the occurrence of macroplastics in agricultural soils was investigated by analysing 384 soil samples collected from 19 provinces across China. Additionally, the abundance of microplastics was investigated in potential hotspots that have carried out plastic mulching for over 30 years. Macroplastic concentrations in the soil samples ranged from 0.1 to 324.5 kg/ha, with an average of 83.6 kg/ha; the concentrations were higher in western China than in eastern China. A highly significant linear correlation (R-2 = 0.61) was found between the consumption of mulching film and the plastic residue in soils, indicating plastic film mulching may be a major source of macroplastics. The abundances of microplastic particles increased over time in the locations where plastic mulching was continuously employed, with concentrations of 80.3 +/- 49.3, 308 +/- 138.1, and 1075.6 +/- 346.8 pieces/kg soil in fields with 5,15, and 24 y of continuous mulching, respectively. Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that the composition of the microplastics matched that of the mulching films, suggesting the microplastic particles originated from the mulching films. These findings confirm that plastic mulching is an important source of macroplastic and microplastic contamination in terrestrial environments. Continuous Plastic-Film Mulching Increases Soil Aggregation but Decreases Soil Ph in Semiarid Areas of China

Abstract:Plastic-film mulch is a globally applied agricultural practice. However, its effects on soil aggregation and pH have been hardly studied. We assessed the effects of plastic-film mulch on soil aggregate water stability and pH in fields used for maize (Zea mays L.) production, at two sites in a cold semiarid environment, China. Four treatments were used: (i) no plastic-film mulch and no straw incorporation, (ii) plastic-film mulch only, (iii) straw incorporation only, and (iv) straw incorporation plus mulch. Seven years after continuous treatment application, the use of plastic-film mulch increased the proportion of water-stable macroaggregates (>0.25 mm) in the top 15-cm soil layer by 16-28%, across sampling times and sites. Straw incorporation similarly increased the proportion of water-stable macroaggregates. However, the effects of mulch, on increasing the mean weight diameter of aggregates were greater in non-straw-incorporated soils than in straw-incorporated soils, and vice versa. Soil bulk density in the top 15-cm soil layer marginally increased in the mulched treatments, relative to the non-mulched treatments, while it decreased in straw-incorporated treatments. In addition, there was a decrease in soil pH, by 0.19-0.54 units, in the mulched, relative to the non-mulched soils. Combining our previous results, we suggested that increases in maize root growth and microbial activity were linked to the increased soil aggregation while accumulation in soil nitrate resulting from the stimulated soil nitrogen mineralization was responsible for the marginally decreased soil pH in the plastic-film mulched relative to the non mulched soils, due to increased soil hydrothermal conditions. Macroplastic Properties and Distribution Influenced by Field Managements with a Long-Term Plastic-Film-Mulching in Mollisols of Northeast China

Abstract:Plastic-film-mulching (PFM) has been widely used for improving the soil moisture and temperature in the farmland, while most of them are degraded into macroplastic (MaP) in soils and cause negative effects on biota. However, it is still not clear how field management, such as tillage frequency and fertilization, influences MaP in soils. In this study, MaP was investigated at 0-20 cm and 20-30 cm soil depths in three vegetable fields (5.2 ha, 6.5 ha, and 3.4 ha) with different management methods (MM) after thirteen years’ PFM in Mollisols of Northeast China. The MM2 has the highest tillage frequency, followed by MM1 and MM3. The total fertilization after transforming into chemical fertilizers was MM1> MM2>MM3. The results showed that (1) Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the top frequently occurring MaP, melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) and Poly (ether urethane) (PEUR) were also found. (2) PE-MaP (>87%) was the predominant MaP type mainly coming from PFM, and field cultivation increased the chances of MaP coming from the outside field. (3) Abundance, mass and accumulated areas of MaP significantly decreased from 0-20 cm to 20-30 cm soil layer, and were mainly influenced by the tillage practice. (4) MM2 has the highest abundance of MaP with size < 4 cm2, while MM3 has the highest abundance at the size of 4-16 cm2 and >16 cm2. (5) Compared with the original plastics, new function groups appeared on the surface of PE, PP, PS and PET, and both the higher fertilization and tillage frequency increased the chances of MaP oxidation. Generally, compared with low fertilization and tillage frequency, both high fertilization and high tillage frequency increased degradation of MaP, decreased negative effects of MaP sizes on crop growth, while produced more hazardous substances.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) and microplastics (MPs) are two emerging factors threatening global food security. Whether long-term MPs pollution will affect the distribution of HMs and their resistance genes (MRGs) in soil is unknown. Here, metagenomic approach was used to decipher the fate of MRGs in cropland soils with long-term film MPs residues. Similar distribution pattern of MRGs was formed in long-term film MPs contaminated soil. A total of 202 MRG subtypes were detected, with resistance genes for Multimetal, Cu, and As being the most prevalent type of MRGs. MRGs formed a modular distribution of five clusters centered on MRGs including ruvB in long-term film MPs contaminated soil. MRGs also formed tight co-occurrence networks with mobile genetic elements (MGEs: integrons, insertions and plasmids). Redundancy analysis showed that HMs together with microbial communities and MGEs affected the distribution of MRGs in soil. Thirteen genera including Pseudomonas were identified as potential hosts for MRGs and MGEs. The research provides preliminary progress on the synergistic effect of HMs and MPs in affecting soil ecological security. The synergistic effect of MPs and HMs needs to be considered in the remediation of contaminated soils.

Abstract:Research on microplastic pollution of terrestrial soils is catching up with the aquatic environment, especially agricultural soil systems. Plastic residues have caused various environmental problems in mulch film extensively used agricultural areas. However, studies focusing specifically on the potential influence of mulch film residues on the metabolic cycle of soil systems have yet to be conducted. Here, high-throughput sequencing combined with metabolomics were first used to study the effects of residual mulch on soil microbial communities and related metabolic functions. Plastic film treatment did not significantly affect soil physicochemical properties including pH, organic matter and nitrogen, etc in short term. However, it did significantly changed overall community structure of soil bacteria, and interfered with complexity of soil bacterial symbiosis networks; exposure time and concentration of residues were particularly important factors affecting community structure. Furthermore, metabolomics analysis showed that film residue significantly changed soil metabolite spectrum, and interfered with basic carbon and lipid metabolism, and also affected basic cellular processes such as membrane transport and, in particular, interfered with the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, as well as, biodegradation and metabolism of xenobiotics. Additionally, through linear discriminant and collinear analysis, some new potential microplastic degrading bacteria including Nitrospira, Nocardioidaceae and Pseudonocardiaceae have been excavated.

Abstract:The contamination of soil by meso- and microplastics (MMPs) has been drawing increasing attention. However, the pollution characteristics of MMPs in mulching cultivated soil across China remain unclear. This study investigated the distribution of MMPs in long-term mulched soils in 29 provinces of China. MPs were found in all soil samples, while mesoplastics were found in only 29.6% of soil samples. The abundance of MPs in soil was 20.00–640.0 items·kg −1 , and the average abundance was 213.0 items·kg −1 . The average abundance of mesoplastics in the soil was 10.00 items·kg −1 . MMPs were found to be primarily film-shaped (37.2%), blue in color (23.4%), and less than 1000 μm in size (39.7%), and the primary polymer was polyethylene (PE, 37.2%). Mulching times and crop types were important factors affecting MMP abundance in soil. These findings reveal the nationwide pollution pattern of MMPs in mulching cultivated soil over the long term, provide basic data for MMP pollution at the national scale, and provide a scientific basis for the rational use and management of plastic films and the treatment of soil MMP pollution.

Abstract:Plastic film mulching has played an important role in Chinese agriculture, especially in vegetable production, but large amounts of film residues can accumulate in the soil. The present study investigated the effects of plastic film residues on the occurrence of soil PAEs and microbial activities using a batch pot experiment. PAE concentrations increased with increasing plastic film residues but the soil microbial carbon and nitrogen, enzyme activities and microbial diversity decreased significantly. At the end of the experiment the PAE concentrations were 0-2.02 mg kg(-1) in the different treatments. Soil microbial C and N, enzyme activities, AWCD value, and Shannon-Weaver and Simpson indices declined by about 28.9-76.2%, 14.9-59.0%, 4.9-22.7%, 23.0-42.0% and 1.8-18.7%, respectively. Soil microbial activity was positively correlated with soil PAE concentration, and soil PAE concentrations were impacted by plastic color and residue volume. Correlations among, and molecular mechanisms of, plastic film residues, PAE occurrence and microbial activity require further study.

Abstract:To determine the fates of the persistent pollutants cadmium (Cd) and micro-plastics in agricultural soils, an in-depth understanding of the interactions between Cd and mulching film is required. In the present work, pot experiments are conducted under natural conditions to study the influence of various Cd concentrations on the aging process of polyethylene mulching film in soil collected from Changzhi, Shanxi Province. The results indicate that during 150 days, the aging degree of the mulch film increases gradually as the increased Cd concentration in the soil. Further, the results of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate that the average vinyl index (VI) of the aging mulch film increases from 1.29 to 1.82, while the oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio of the mulch film decreases significantly from 0.344 to 0.045, as the Cd concentration is increased from 0 to 10 mg kg-1. When the aging time exceeds 90 days, the oxygen-containing functional groups (C-O and CO) generated consumed by the adsorbed Cd. In addition, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements indicate that Cd both enhances the formation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) on the surface of the mulch film and prevents the combination of ·OH and electrons, thereby accelerating the aging of the mulch. Hence, the present study indicates that the presence of Cd will hasten the decomposition of mulch, which will inevitably result in the faster release of micro-plastics from the mulch into the soil environment.

Abstract:Environmental risk of multi-year polythene film mulching (PM) was evaluated and investigated. The location observation following 19-year (2000–2018) PM in irrigated region indicated that the cumulative accumulation of soil microplastics was as high as 2900 ± 19.5 n kg−1. Microplastic accumulation was tightly associated with soil plasticizer concentration (Pearson’s r = 0.728, p 0.05). Critically, total concentration of PAEs decreased by 6.43% in SM relative to CK, and by 9.61% in PM+SM relative to PM respectively. High throughput sequencing indicated that the proportions of predominant bacteria and fungi were totally lower in PM than those of organic mulching, particularly Sphingomonadaceae and Stachybotryaceae. KEGG analyses indicated that organic mulching promoted the metabolisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzoic acid (probability>75%) and heterologous organism metabolism (p<0.001), due to improved microbial community assembly. Seasonal Variations and Feedback from Microplastics and Cadmium on Soil Organisms in Agricultural Fields

Abstract:Plastic film mulching is an important agricultural technology that plays a critical role in increasing crop yield and maintaining soil moisture. However, long-term coverage and untimely recovery lead to a large amount of plastic residues in soils. This decomposes into smaller plastics over time, which can reduce sowing quality, destroy the soil structure, and have adverse effects on soil organisms. In this study, the seasonal variations and correlations of microplastics and cadmium (Cd) in Wuxi farmland soils of Taihu Lake, China, were investigated in the spring and winter. The microplastics were mainly in the form of films, fibers, and debris and were mainly transparent and black in color. Microplastic abundance reached 890 particles/kg soil, with the majority of microplastics (>72.5%) being 0-500 mu m. Polyethylene microplastics were the main polymers, accounting for >54.65%. In addition, the abundance of soil microplastics in the winter was significantly correlated with Cd, indicating that microplastics and heavy metals present a risk of coexposure to soil organisms. Furthermore, the response of in situ earthworms to microplastic-Cd pollution revealed that microplastics can be used as a vector to transfer heavy metals in the soil environment and may accumulate in the bodies of soil organisms. Multiomics techniques demonstrated bacterial community structure dysbiosis and metabolic changes of in situ earthworms under microplastic heavy metal-contaminated soils. The abundance of microplastics in earthworm casts and intestines was higher than that in the soil samples. These results reveal the potential risks from microplastics entering the soil environment and heavy metal pollution in soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastics derived from polyethylene (PE) mulch films are widely found in farmland soils and present considerable potential threats to agricultural soil ecosystems. However, the influence of microplastics derived from PE mulch films, especially those derived from farmland residual PE mulch films, on soil ecosystems remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the bacterial communities attached to farmland residual transparent PE mulch film (FRMF) collected from peanut fields and the different ecological effects of unused PE mulch film-derived microplastics (MPs) and FRMF-derived microplastics (MPs-aged) on the soil and earthworm Metaphire guillelmi gut microbiota, functional traits, and co-occurrence patterns. The results showed that the assembly and functional patterns of the bacterial communities attached to the FRMF were clearly distinct from those in the surrounding farmland soil, and the FRMF enriched some potential plastic-degrading and pathogenic bacteria, such as Nocardioidaceae, Clostridiaceae, Micrococcaceae, and Mycobacteriaceae. MPs substantially influenced the assembly and functional traits of soil bacterial communities; however, they only significantly changed the functional traits of earthworm gut bacterial communities. MPs-aged considerably affected the assembly and functional traits of both soil and earthworm gut bacterial communities. Notably, MPs had a more remarkable effect on nitrogen-related functions than the MPs-aged in numbers for both soil and earthworm gut samples. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that both MPs and MPs-aged enhanced the synergistic interactions among operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of the composition networks for all samples. For community functional networks, MPs and MPs-aged enhanced the antagonistic interactions for soil samples; however, they exhibited contrasting effects for earthworm gut samples, as MPs enhanced the synergistic interactions among the functional contents. These findings broaden and deepen our understanding of the effects of FRMF-derived microplastics on soil ecosystems, suggesting that the harmful effects of aged plastics on the ecological environment should be considered.

Effects of mulch films with different thicknesses on the microbial community of tobacco rhizosphere soil in Yunnan laterite

Abstract:The mulch film (MF) management model of the agricultural field affects the physical and chemical properties of soil (PCPS) and the structure of the microorganism community; however, studies on the relationship between the rhizosphere microorganism community structure and the thickness of MF are still limited. To understand the interactions among the MF thickness, PCPS, and rhizosphere microorganism, a study was conducted by using an integrated metagenomic strategy, where tobacco rhizosphere soil was treated with four commonly representative and used thicknesses of MFs (0.004, 0.006, 0.008, and 0.010 mm) in Yunnan laterite. The results showed that agronomic traits such as the tobacco plant height (TPH), leaf number (LN), fresh leaf weight (FLW), and dry leaf weight (DLW) were significantly (p < 0.01) improved in the field mulched with the thickest film (0.010 mm) compared with the exposed field (CK), and there was a 6.81 and 5.54% increase in the FLW and TPH, separately. The correlation analyses revealed a significant positive correlation of the MF thickness with the soil water content (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), and available phosphorus (AP; all p < 0.01), while the MF thickness was negatively correlated with the soil temperature (ST; p < 0.01). In addition, the community structure of the rhizosphere soil bacteria was significantly changed overall by the MF thickness, which also interfered with the function of the rhizosphere soil bacteria. The correlation analyses also showed that the abundance of Bradyrhizobium and Nitrospira was positively correlated with the MF thickness, while the abundance of Sphinsinomonas and Massilia was negatively correlated with it. This indicated that with the increase of the MF thickness, the ability of the rhizosphere soil to utilize N and remove harmful molecules was strengthened, while the capacity of the rhizosphere soil to degrade pollutants was greatly reduced. These findings provide additional insights into the potential risks of the application of different thicknesses of MFs, particularly concerning the PCPS and soil microbial communities.

Abstract:The residue of mulch film is a crucial source of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural fields. The effects of mulch film-derived MPs on the environmental behavior of pesticides in agriculture remain unclear. In the present study, the effects of MPs of different sizes (5 mm, 1 mm, 30 µm, and 0.3 µm) at environmentally relevant concentrations on pesticide transport were evaluated, and the mechanism was explored with respect to adsorption and pore structure using fluorescence visualization, the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek model, and microcomputed tomography. MPs were found to be retained in the soil due to size limitation, pore capture, and surface adhesion. The presence of mm-sized MPs (5 and 1 mm) at a concentration of 0.25 % inhibited the leaching behavior of atrazine, metolachlor, and tebuconazole. MPs did not significantly alter the pesticide adsorption ability of the soil. The reduced leaching originated from the impact of MPs on soil pore structure. Specifically, the porosity increased by 16.2-25.0 %, and the connectivity decreased by 34.5 %. These results demonstrate that mm-sized MPs inhibit pesticide leaching by obstructing the pores and altering the transport pathways, thereby potentially elevating environmental risks, particularly to the soil ecosystem.
