Abstract:The global plastic waste problem has created an urgent need for the development of more sustainable materials and recycling processes. Polyurethane (PU) plastics, which represent 5.5% of globally produced plastics, are particularly challenging to recycle owing to their crosslinked structure. Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) based on dynamic covalent bonds have emerged as a promising solution for recycling PU waste. CANs enable the production of thermoset polymers that can be recycled using methods that are traditionally reserved for thermoplastic polymers. Reprocessing using hot-pressing techniques, in particular, proved to be more suited for the class of polyurethanes, allowing for the efficient recycling of PU materials. This Review paper explores the potential of CANs for improving the sustainability of PU recycling processes by examining different types of PU-CANs, bond types, and fillers that can be used to optimise the recycling efficiency. The paper concludes that further research is needed to develop more cost-effective and industrial-friendly techniques for recycling PU-CANs, as they can significantly contribute to sustainable development by creating recyclable thermoset polymers.

Abstract:In recent years, bio-based covalent adaptable networks (CANs) and vitrimers have developed rapidly in order to meet the renewable and sustainable requirements. It should be emphasized that the performance of the network need be upgraded and optimized to substitute petroleum-based polymers. Herein, a series of high-performance bio-based polyurethane were synthesized containing castor oil, isosorbide, vanillin derivative and 4,4′-Dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate. By fine-tuning the bio-based diols, the hydrogen bond distribution and the crosslink density of the network were adjustable. The thermal mechanical properties and stress relaxation properties of the bio-based polyurethane were optimized. The bio-based polyurethane CANs shows tensile strength of 38.1 MPa, elongation at break of 243% and toughness of 55.7 MJ m−3, which is outstanding among most reported bio-based CANs. In addition, the polymer has excellent water resistance, shape memory and re-deformability. Due to the dissociation of imine bonds under mild acid conditions, the carbon fiber composite can readily degrade in mixed solvent for 3 h at 60 °C and the properties of recycled carbon fibers are highly preserved.

Abstract:Castor oil (CO) derived thermoset polyurethanes are usually limited by their poor mechanical properties and the difficulty in removing or recycling because of the aliphatic or alicyclic backbone and their permanent cross-linking structures. Although covalent adaptable networks (CANs) based on dynamic bonds have been proposed, it is still highly desired to fabricate polymer CANs with high performance, stimulus resistance, stepwise degradation and closed-loop recycling from renewable CO for sustainable development. In this study, CO-based poly(urethane urea) (PU) thermosets relied on double-locked covalent adaptable networks (DLCANs) were proposed to achieve programmable degradation and closed-loop recycling. From a CO-derived isocyanate monomers and two dynamic curing agents of aminophenyl disulfide (AFDS) and aminophenyl diimine (AFDI), bio-based thermosets of PU DLCANs were prepared. The bio-based PU DLCANs were ultra-stable and still kept cross-linked upon disadvantageous chemical stimuli instead of dissociating like the conventional CANs. Moreover, the bio-based PU DLCANs became degradable only by applying programmed stimuli, when the two types of dynamic cross-links in parallel connection were both broken step by step. Meanwhile, the broken cross-links could be reformed when dynamic bonds regenerated upon heating, leading to the closed-loop recycling of the bio-based PU DLCANs. Besides, being applied as coatings, the bio-based PU DLCANs exhibited UV shielding, self-healing properties and long-term stability as well as programming removable properties. The bio-based thermosets relied on DLCANs have the potential to guarantee the reliability of polymeric CANs and maintain the closed-loop recycling by applying programmable stimuli, which is quite meaningful and practical for life-time environmental-friendly coatings.

Abstract:The introduction of dynamic covalent chemistry into the field of polymer chemistry has resulted in a new class of network polymer materials named covalent adaptable networks (CANs). These new materials have effectively bridged two antagonistic materials, that is, conventional thermoplastic and thermoset polymers together, thanks to these dynamic exchangeable covalent bonds, making them recyclable. In this work, we report a catalyst‐free reprocessable polybenzoxazine‐polyurethane thermosetting system with activation of carbamate dynamic bond exchange. The curing characteristics and properties of this biobased polybenzoxazine‐polyurethane network have been determined by Fourier transform infra‐red (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). Moreover, the tests of the recyclability of the material were successfully achieved under mild reprocess conditions (130°C, 10 min) thanks to the formation of abundant free phenolic hydroxyl groups. This work provides a promising potential for industrial applications as a new recyclable and reprocessable thermosetting polybenzoxazine material. Dynamic carbamate chemistry and reprocess.

Abstract:Castor oil-derived polyurethanes are usually limited by their poor mechanical properties, non-processability, and non-recyclability due to their permanent crosslinking structures with soft backbone and high crosslink density. It is highly desired to fabricate mechanically robust, reprocessable, and recyclable polyurethane from renewable castor oil (CO) for sustainable development. Herein, we report sustainable poly(urethane urea) covalent adaptable networks (CANs) containing novel reversible piperidine-urea bonds with CO and commercially available isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 1,3-bis(4-piperidinyl) propane (PIP) as raw materials. PIP with two six-membered rings as a structural modifier can adjust the network stiffness and crosslink density of PPU, which allows the mechanical properties of PPU to be tuned easily in a wide range from soft to tough and hard. Furthermore, the reversible piperidine-urea bonds formed by PIP and isocyanate endow PPU with stable reprocessability, exceptionally recyclable and strong weldability. Both the chemical structure and physical properties of the PPU network were almost restored completely after repeated processing. The mechanical properties of broken PPU can be recovered to higher than 88% of original PPU by thermal welding. In addition, the PPU can be recycled (or dissolved) chemically via deconstruction of the polymer network by exposure to PIP solution. The deconstructed polymer network can be reconstructed by addition of IPDI to the solution. The reconstructed PPU exhibited enhanced mechanical strength compared to the original PPU. In general, this investigation presents a facile, universal, and environmentally friendly approach to fabricate sustainable PUs with tunable mechanical properties, excellent malleability and multiple recyclability.

Abstract:Polyurethanes with covalent adaptable networks (CANs) have received extensive attention due to their recyclability and self-healability; meanwhile, how to design and regulate the structure and properties of dynamically cross-linked polyurethanes with biobased monomers is of particular interest. Herein, we design a new type of dynamically cross-linked polyurethane derived from biobased polyol (castor oil) and industrial bulk products: bisphenol and isophorone diisocyanate. Furthermore, we develop a strategy to regulate the rearrangement kinetics of the dynamic covalent networks. The stronger the electron-withdrawing effect of the structure between the two benzene rings in bisphenol, the easier the network rearrangement and the lower the initial temperature of dynamic bonds dissociation. By varying the type and ratio of mixed bisphenols, the initial temperature of dynamic bond disassociation and the rate of network rearrangement can be adjusted within a wide range. In addition, by changing the cross-linking degree, the mechanical properties, glass-transition temperature, and network rearrangement rate can also be tuned. In this work, we have established a new method for designing biobased polyurethanes with CANs, which is beneficial for developing self-healing and recyclable cross-linked polyurethanes with variable properties from biobased feedstock and industrial bulk products.
Mechanochemistry: An Efficient Way to Recycle Thermoset Polyurethanes

Abstract:A recycling process of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics was proposed based on the mechanochemical method, aiming at the three-dimensional network cross-linking structure of thermosetting polyurethane. Orthogonal experimental design was adopted to select three factors of crushing speed, crushing time, and feed amount to determine the best crushing parameters. Then, the waste polyurethane insulation boards were crushed and degraded by the mechanism of regenerative forming with the adjustable speed test machine. Accordingly, the recycled powder was obtained. Finally, nine kinds of polyurethane recycled composite plates were prepared by hot pressing process. The degradation effect of thermosetting polyurethane was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the mechanical properties and thermal insulation properties of recycled composite plates were tested and analyzed. The results show that the network cross-linking molecular structure of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics is destroyed by the effect of mechanochemical action, and methyl and aldehyde groups are decomposed. Therefore, a recycled powder with strong reactivity and plasticity is generated, which improves the activity regeneration ability. After adding thermoplastic resin, the mechanical properties and formability of recycled composite plates are enhanced, with maximum tensile strength up to 9.913 MPa. Correspondingly, the thermal insulation performance of plates is reduced. However, the minimum thermal conductivity can also reach 0.0555 W/m·K. This study provides an effective method for the recycling of thermosetting polyurethane plastics.

High-Performance, Biobased, Degradable Polyurethane Thermoset and Its Application in Readily Recyclable Carbon Fiber Composites

Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyurethane (PU) composites have attracted increasing attention in recent years. It is still a challenge to recycle the CF reinforced composites, and there is no report on the recycling of CF from PU matrix. In this paper, for the first time, a readily recyclable CF reinforced PU composite was prepared based on a biobased acetal diol, 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dioxan-5-ol (HMDO). The acetal diol was synthesized from the lignin derivative vanillin and was used to react with hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer to prepare the PU thermoset (PU-HMDO). On account of the cleavable acetal groups, the PU-HMDO could be decomposed within 40 min in low-concentration acidic solution completely. In addition, the heterocyclic structures of acetal and isocyanurate resulted in excellent mechanical and thermal properties of PU-HMDO. The tensile strength was 68 MPa, the elongation at break was 7.9%, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) was 130 °C, which are comparable to those of a PU thermoset (PU-BPA) from commercially available diol bisphenol A (BPA). The thermal stability of PU-HMDO was even higher than that of PU-BPA. The PU-HMDO-based CF composite exhibited similar mechanical properties to the PU-BPA-based CF composite, and CF could be reclaimed with maintained microscale morphology, chemical structures, and mechanical properties under mild acid conditions. Abstract:A sensitive rapid analytical method was established and validated to determine the bakkenolide A (BA) in rat plasma. This method was further applied to assess the pharmacokinetics of BA in rats receiving a single dose of BA. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in multiple reaction monitoring mode was used in the method, and costundide was used as internal standard. A simple protein precipitation based on methanol was employed. The combination of a simple sample cleanup and short chromatographic running time (2.4 min) increased the throughput of the method substantially. The method was validated over the range of 1-1000 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient > 0.99. The lower limit of quantification was 1 ng/mL for BA in plasma. Intra- and inter-day accuracies for BA were 93-112% and 103-104%, respectively, and the inter-day precision was less than 15%. After a single oral dose of 20 mg/kg of BA, the mean peak plasma concentration (C(max) ) of BA was 234.7 ± 161 ng/mL at 0.25 h. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC(0-24 h) ) was 535.8 ± 223.7 h·ng/mL, and the elimination half-life (T(1/2) ) was 5.0 ± 0.36 h. In case of intravenous administration of BA at a dosage of 2 mg/kg, the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC(0-24 h) ) was 342 ± 98 h⋅ng/mL, and the elimination half-life (T(1/2) ) was 5.8 ± 0.7 h. Based on the results, the oral bioavailability of BA in rats at 20 mg/kg is 15.7%.

Abstract:Developing bio-based non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) to replace petroleum-based conventional polyurethanes (PUs) plays an essential role in green production and relieving energy pressure. However, the synthesis of NIPUs using renewable resources, and recycling after reaching service time remain to be solved. Herein, a novel structural cross-linked NIPU network with closed-loop recyclability was prepared, which is derived from abundant lignin-derived and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) resources. The obtained NIPUs with dual dynamic covalent bonds exhibit relatively low activation energy (70.34 kJ/mol) and remarkable remolding efficiency (∼100 %). Importantly, spiro bi-acetal structures in polymer chains impart closed-loop recyclability to the obtained NIPUs. The results showed that they can be degraded at room temperature followed by regeneration with nearly full recovery of properties. Moreover, bio-based NIPUs are used as supporting material s to produce phase change materials (PCMs) for the first time, and the latent heat reaches 128.2 J/g. The material has favorable form stability and is leakage-proof owing to Zn II -carboxylates coordination interactions and stable cross-linked networks. This study demonstrates a method for the synthesis of closed-loop recyclable NIPUs from renewable resources, enriching synthetic diversity while providing an initial exploration of its potential as PCMs.

Polythiourethane Covalent Adaptable Networks for Strong and Reworkable Adhesives and Fully Recyclable Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites

Abstract:The development of adhesives with superior optical and mechanical performance, solvent resistance, and reworkability is gaining increasing attention in recent years. However, traditional materials do not possess reprocessability and healing characteristics for sustainable development. Here, a superior dynamic polythiourethane (PTU) adhesive with high reprocessability was developed by introducing covalent adaptable networks (CANs). Specifically, dynamic thiocarbamate bonds (TCB) were used to prepare PTU CANs, which showed dramatically enhanced malleability and recyclability. The Young's modulus of the material was 2.0 GPa and the tensile strength was 62.7 MPa. The reprocessing temperature of CANs was reduced to 80 °C while more than 90% of their mechanical properties were retained, even after being reprocessed several times. Moreover, the highly transparent and water-resistant PTU CANs featured an excellent bonding property and reworkability for various materials including glass, with a lap shear strength of 2.9 MPa, metal (5.1 MPa), and wood (6.3 MPa), compared with commercially available adhesives. Additionally, carbon fiber-reinforced composites constructed with PTU CANs were capable of being fully recycled and reused. Importantly, laminated glass with a toughened PTU-PU elastomer interface exhibited an outstanding impact fatigue-resistance behavior, sustaining thousands of impacts. These features demonstrate that PTU CANs show great potential as sustainable materials.

Abstract:The transition to sustainable routes boosts growth in academic research that centers on the replacement of isocyanate-based polyurethanes (PUs). Non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) produced by aminolysis of cyclic carbonate are treated as a promising replacement for PUs. Herein, we report a novel cross-linked NIPU material prepared from resveratrol and CO2. The rigid conjugated structure of resveratrol affords NIPUs excellent mechanical properties, with the capacity to produce robust materials possessing tensile stress of 92 MPa. In addition, functional pre-monomers can be obtained by the alcoholysis of cross-linked NIPUs, and bio-based cyclic carbonates can be regenerated by ring-closing reaction. The regenerated bio-based cyclic carbonates remain as monomers with the same reactive efficiency, and the re-prepared NIPUs exhibit the same structures and properties. This work investigates an eco-friendly synthetic pathway for producing high-performance and chemical recyclable cross-linked NIPU materials using renewable resources, which will enrich the synthetic strategy and recycling of NIPU-based chemistry.

Abstract:The thermoset polyurethane materials are characterized by excellent comprehensive properties. However, the stable cross-linked network structure limits their reprocessability and recyclability. In this study, a thermoset polybutadiene polyurethane-urea material with excellent recyclable and reprocessable properties was prepared. The polyurethane-urea material was prepared by reacting isocyanate-capped polybutadiene prepolymer with curing agent 2,2 '-dithiodianiline (DTDA containing dynamic disulfide bonds). The tensile strength and elongation at break of the materials were approximately 21.3 MPa and 604%, respectively. The thermoset pieces underwent a dynamic disulfide exchange reaction in DTDA/toluene solution and rapidly degraded to soluble fragments (a series of aniline-terminated low-molecular-weight materials) after 40 min at 60 degrees C. When the recycled soluble fragments were reacted with isocyanate compounds, a thermoset material was obtained again. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the material exceeded 98% of the initial values. After the above degradation-recycling process was repeated once more, the mechanical properties of the second recycled material remained unchanged. Additionally, the thermoset pieces were remolded after being hot-pressed at 150 degrees C for 10 min to produce high-performance materials. This study uses dynamic disulfide bonds to achieve degradation, recovery, and reprocessing utilization of a high-strength thermoset polyurethane-urea material.

Abstract:Thermoset plastics have become one of the most important chemical products in the world. The consequent problem is that although the thermosets possess excellent performance in mechanical strength, they cannot be reprocessed because of the internal permanent network structures. Optimizing the molecular design of thermosets is one of the most feasible ways to improve their recyclability. Here we present a facile and robust strategy to engineer the reprocessability of thermoset polyurethanes without compromising their mechanical toughness and chemical resistance via adding supramolecular additives during the polymer synthesis process. By using a multiple hydrogen bonding moiety as the model supramolecular additive, we demonstrate that the mechanical properties, recyclability, and chemical resistance of the crosslinked polyurethanes can be precisely controlled by adjusting the contents of the supramolecular additive. Systematic studies on the relations between molecular design and material properties are performed, and the optimized polyurethane network with a moderate amount of the supramolecular additive achieves the right balance between the robustness and recyclability. This work provides a cost-effective and practical way to chemically engineer thermoset plastics, aiming to enable the recycling of mechanically tough and chemically stable polymer materials.

Abstract:Cross-linked polyurethane (PU) is extensively used as thermoset foam; however, methods to directly reprocess PU foam waste derived from commercial sources into similar value materials have not been developed. We demonstrate that introducing dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) into cross-linked PU foams and films enables their reprocessing at elevated temperatures via dynamic carbamate exchange reactions. Both model and commercial cross-linked PU foams were continuously reprocessed using twin-screw extrusion to remove gaseous filler and produce PU filaments or films with elastomeric or rigid thermoset mechanical properties. The properties of microcompounded model PU foam were in excellent agreement with PU film synthesized using the same monomers, indicating that this process occurs efficiently. These findings will enable the bulk reprocessing of commercial thermoset PU waste and inspire the further development of reprocessing methods for other thermosets and the compatibilization of chemically distinct cross-linked materials.A method for recycling cross-linked polyurethane foam by embedding carbamate exchange catalyst and continuously reprocessing which could potentially reduce polyurethane waste generation is presented.

Abstract:A sudden increase in polyurethane (PU) production necessitates viable recycling methods for the waste generated. PU is one of the most important plastic materials with a wide range of applications; however, the stability of the urethane linkage is a major issue in chemical recycling. In this work, termination reactions of a model urethane molecule, namely methyl N-phenyl carbamate (MPCate), are investigated using G3MP2B3 composite quantum chemical method. Our main goal was to gain insights into the energetic profile of urethane bond termination and find an applicable chemical recycling method. Hydrogenation, hydrolysis, methanolysis, peroxidation, glycolysis, ammonolysis, reduction with methylamine and termination by dimethyl phosphite were explored in both gas and condensed phases. Out of these chemicals, degradation by H2, H2O2 and CH3NH2 revealed promising results with lower activation barriers and exergonic pathways, especially in water solvation. Implementing these effective PU recycling methods can also have significant economic benefits since the obtained products from the reactions are industrially relevant substances. For example, aniline and dimethyl carbonate could be reusable in polymer technologies serving as potential methods for circular economy. As further potential transformations, several ionizations of MPCate were also examined including electron capture and detachment, protonation/deprotonation and reaction with OH−. Alkaline digestion against the model urethane MPCate was found to be promising due to the relatively low activation energy. In an ideal case, the transformation of the urethane bond could be an enzymatic process; therefore, potential enzymes, such as lipoxygenase, were also considered for the catalysis of peroxidation, and lipases for methanolysis.

Chemical recycling of poly-(bisphenol A carbonate) by diaminolysis: A new carbon-saving synthetic entry into non-isocyanate polyureas (NIPUreas)

Abstract:The present study describes an unprecedented approach to valorize potentially hazardous poly-(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) wastes. In THF, under non-severe conditions (120 °C), the reaction of PC with long-chain diamines H2NRNH2 (2 equivalents) provided a tool to regenerate the monomer bisphenol A (BPA; 83-95%, isolated) and repurpose waste PC into [-NHRNHCO-]n polyureas (PUs; 78-99%, isolated) through a non-isocyanate route. Basic diamines (1,6-diaminohexane, 4,7,10-trioxa-1,13-tridecanediamine, meta-xylylenediamine, para-xylylenediamine) reacted with PC without any auxiliary catalyst; less reactive aromatic diamines (4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, 2,4-diaminotoluene) required the assistance of a base catalyst (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene, NaOH). The formation of [-NHRNHCO-]n goes through a carbamation step affording BPA and carbamate intermediates H[-OArOC(O)NHRNHC(O)-]nOArOH (Ar=4,4'-C6H4C(Me)2C6H4-) that, in a subsequent step, convert into [-NHRNHCO-]n and more BPA. All the PUs were characterized in the solid state by CP/MAS 13C NMR (δ(CO) = 152-161 ppm) and IR spectroscopy. The positions of ν(N-H) and ν(CO) absorptions are typical of "hydrogen-bonded ordered" bands suggesting the presence of H-bonded groups in network structures characterized by some degree of order or regularity. DSC and TGA analyses showed that the PUs are thermally stable (Td,5%: 212-270 °C) and suitable for being processed since their degradation begins at temperatures about 100 °C higher than their Tg or Tm.

Abstract:Non‐isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) have been widely studied as sustainability potential, because they can be prepared without using toxic isocyanates in the synthesis process. The aminolysis of cyclic carbonate to form NIPUs is a promising route. In this work, a series of NIPUs is prepared from renewable bis(6‐membered cyclic carbonates) (iEbcc) and amines. The resulting NIPUs possess excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. The NIPUs can be remolded via transcarbamoylation reactions, and iEbcc‐TAEA‐10 still got a recovery ratio of 90% in tensile stress after three cycles of remolding. In addition, the obtained materials can be chemically degraded into bi(1,3‐diol) precursors with high purity (> 99%) and yield (> 90%) through alcoholysis. Meanwhile, the degraded products can be used to regenerate NIPUs with similar structures and properties as the original samples. The synthetic strategy, isocyanate‐free and employing isoeugenol and CO2 as building blocks, makes this approach an attractive pathway to NIPU networks taking a step toward a circular economy.
