Abstract:Active multilayer films based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) with and without high barrier coatings of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were herein successfully developed. To this end, an electrospun antimicrobial hot-tack layer made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) derived from cheese whey, a by-product from the dairy industry, was deposited on a previously manufactured blown film of commercial food contact PHA-based resin. A hybrid combination of oregano essential oil (OEO) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were incorporated during the electrospinning process into the PHBV nanofibers at 2.5 and 2.25 wt%, respectively, in order to provide antimicrobial properties. A barrier CNC coating was also applied by casting from an aqueous solution of nanocellulose at 2 wt% using a rod at 1m/min. The whole multilayer structure was thereafter assembled in a pilot roll-to-roll laminating system, where the blown PHA-based film was located as the outer layers while the electrospun antimicrobial hot-tack PHBV layer and the barrier CNC coating were placed as interlayers. The resultant multilayer films, having a final thickness in the 130-150 µm range, were characterized to ascertain their potential in biodegradable food packaging. The multilayers showed contact transparency, interlayer adhesion, improved barrier to water and limonene vapors, and intermediate mechanical performance. Moreover, the films presented high antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in both open and closed systems for up to 15 days. Finally, the food safety of the multilayers was assessed by migration and cytotoxicity tests, demonstrating that the films are safe to use in both alcoholic and acid food simulants and they are also not cytotoxic for Caco-2 cells.

Abstract:Biobased and biodegradable plastics have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional plastics offering the potential to reduce environmental impacts while promoting sustainability. This study focuses on the production of multilayer blown films with enhanced functional properties suitable for food packaging applications. Films were developed through co-extrusion in a three-layer film configuration, with Polybutylene Succinate (PBS) and Polybutylene Succinate Adipate (PBSA) as the external and internal layers, respectively. The functional layer consisted of Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) enhanced with nanoclays Cloisite® 30B at varying weight ratios. Films were also processed by manipulating the extruder screw speed of the functional layer to investigate its impact on the functional properties. Rheology, mechanical strength, and barrier performance were characterised to establish correlations between processing conditions and functional layer blends (Cloisite® 30B/PHB) on the properties of the resultant films. Rheological test results indicated that the system with 5% Cloisite® had the best polymer/nanofiller matrix dispersion. Mechanical and permeability tests showed that by varying the process conditions (the alteration of the thickness of the functionalized layer) resulted in an improvement in mechanical and barrier properties. Furthermore, the addition of the nanofiller resulted in a stiffening of the film with a subsequent decrease in permeability to oxygen and water vapour.

Designing Biodegradable and Active Multilayer System by Assembling an Electrospun Polycaprolactone Mat Containing Quercetin and Nanocellulose between Polylactic Acid Films

Abstract:The design of multilayer systems is an innovative strategy to improve physical properties of biodegradable polymers and introduce functionality to the materials through the incorporation of an active compound into some of these layers. In this work, a trilayer film based on a sandwich of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers (PCLé) containing quercetin (Q) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) between extruded polylactic acid (PLA) films was designed with the purpose of improving thermal and barrier properties and affording antioxidant activity to packaged foods. PCLé was successfully electrospun onto 70 μm-thick extruded PLA film followed by the assembling of a third 25 μm-thick commercial PLA film through hot pressing. Optical, morphological, thermal, and barrier properties were evaluated in order to study the effect of PCL layer and the addition of Q and CNC. Bilayer systems obtained after the electrospinning process of PCL onto PLA film were also evaluated. The release of quercetin from bi- and trilayer films to food simulants was also analyzed. Results evidenced that thermal treatment during thermo-compression melted PCL polymer and resulted in trilayer systems with barrier properties similar to single PLA film. Quercetin release from bi- and trilayer films followed a similar profile, but achieved highest value through the addition of CNC.

Abstract:High-performance and useful graphene oxide (GO) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are easily extracted from natural graphite and cellulose raw materials, and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is produced by bacterial fermentation from natural plant corn stalks, etc. In this study, novel ternary nanocomposites consisting of PHBV/cellulose nanocrystal-graphene oxide nanohybrids were prepared via a simple solution casting method. The synergistic effect of CNC with GO nanohybrids obtained by chemical grafting (CNC-GO, covalent bonds) and physical blending (CNC/GO, noncovalent bonds) on the physicochemical properties of PHBV nanocomposites was evaluated and the results compared with a single component nanofiller (CNC or GO) in binary nanocomposites. More interestingly, ternary nanocomposites displayed the highest thermal stability and mechanical properties. Compared to neat PHBV, the tensile strength and elongation to break increased by 170.2 and 52.1%, respectively, and maximum degradation temperature (T-max) increment by 26.3 degrees C, were observed for the ternary nanocomposite with 1 wt % covalent bonded CNC-GO. Compared to neat PHBV, binary, and 1:0.5 wt % noncovalent CNC/GO based nanocomposites, the ternary nanocomposites with 1 wt % covalent bonded CNC-GO exhibited excellent barrier properties, good antibacterial activity (antibacterial ratio of 100.0%), reduced barrier properties, and lower migration level for both food simulants. Such a synergistic effect yielded high-performance ternary nanocomposites with great potential for bioactive food packaging materials.

Abstract:This work highlights the potential of biodegradable poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terphthalate) (PBAT) films incorporated with Montmorillonite particles (MMT) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) for application in food packaging. The PBAT‐MMT and PBAT‐HNT films present a favorable combination of mechanical, optical, and gas barrier properties. Biodegradable packaging plastics combining good mechanical properties and low gas permeability is required to avoid environmental and food safety concerns. This study explores the impact of montmorillonite (MMT) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT), on the mechanical, optical, and oxygen permeability of blown film poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) composites. The morphology of the films was evaluated by x‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Good distribution/dispersion of clays is found in the PBAT‐MMT films. Besides, there is an increase in the crystallinity of PBAT due to the nucleating effect of HNT. Improvement in the tensile strength and elongation at break in the machine direction is obtained up to a clay content of 1.5 vol%. The incorporation of 1.5 vol% of MMT and 1 vol% of HNT leads to a reduction in the oxygen permeability of the PBAT film by 29% and 38% respectively. Furthermore, the films remain transparent regardless of clay content. Finally, the feasibility of the films for food storage is tested in grapes, obtaining extended shelf life. The favorable mechanical, barrier and optical properties of the biodegradable films, along with the scalable production process, make them attractive for application in the storage and preservation of food products.

Abstract:Widely employed petroleum-based food packaging materials have inflicted irreparable harm on ecosystems, primarily stemming from their non-biodegradable attributes and recycling complexities. Inspired by natural nacre with a layered aragonite platelet/nanofiber/protein multi-structure, we prepared high-barrier composite films by self-assembly of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), montmorillonite (MMT), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD). The composite films demonstrated outstanding barrier properties with oxygen vapor transmission of 0.193 g·mm·m-2·day-1 and water vapor transmission rates of 0.062 cm3·mm·m-2·day-1·0.1 MPa-1, which were significantly lower than those of most biomass-degradable packaging materials. Additionally, the impacts of mixing nanocellulose with various aspect ratios on the tensile strength and folding cycles of the films were examined. The exceptional resistance of the composite films to oil and water provides a novel and sustainable approach to reduce non-biodegradable plastic packaging.

Abstract:Biodegradable packaging materials with antimicrobial properties are main key for developing sustainable active packages able to protect different foodstuff. Thus, the aim of this research was developing a biopolymeric and antibacterial packaging material with a trilayer structure through the combination of extrusion, electrospinning and coating techniques. This trilayer system was composed by a support extruded layer of polylactic acid (PLA), an intermediate PLA electrospun layer loaded with ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and a third inner chitosan coating. Morphological, wettability, antibacterial and disintegrability properties of this material were evaluated. The morphological surface analysis evidenced the heterogeneity of the chitosan coating over the electrospun PLA layer, and this effect affected negatively the evaluation of wettability of this trilayer material. Antibacterial assays evidenced a fast and strong bactericidal effect against Gram(+) and (−) bacteria that maintained this activity for 15 days. Finally, the biodegradable properties of different layers favored the disintegration of developed trilayer material at 21 days under composting conditions.

Abstract:In this study, the possibility of modifying a multi-layer biopolymer active system to reduce permeability to gases of a biodegradable material with potential application in food technology was analysed. A four-layer biopolymer film was used, wherein the initial two layers comprised furcellaran, whilst the subsequent two layers were a mixture of chitosan and gelatin. The film was modified with active ingredients, including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), montmorillonite, a curcumin-capsaicin mixture and gelatin hydrolysate. The film formed an integrated, semi-rigid packaging system together with the tray, which was developed from tea brewing waste and biopolymers. Application properties were assessed by analysing mechanical parameters, key to the assessment of their quality, proving that the active ingredients significantly improved the strength properties. There was an almost twofold increase in modulus of elasticity values compared to the control film. The permeability against oxygen was also assessed as the main performance characteristic of the packaging and was only 13.64 ± 3.92 [cm 3 /m 2 × 24 h]. The impact of the applied material innovation in packaging on the freshness of food products was also evaluated by analysing the microbiological purity of stored Salmo Salar fillet. The active, biodegradable packaging extended the shelf-life of salmon by 6 days compared to the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film. Toxicity analysis has shown that the used active ingredients are safe for the environment and consumers.

Continuous Processing of Nanocellulose and Polylactic Acid into Multilayer Barrier Coatings

Abstract:Recent years have seen an increased interest toward utilizing biobased and biodegradable materials for barrier packaging applications. Most of the abovementioned materials usually have certain shortcomings that discourage their adoption as a preferred material of choice. Nanocellulose falls into such a category. It has excellent barrier against grease, mineral oils, and oxygen but poor tolerance against water vapor, which makes it unsuitable to be used at high humidity. In addition, nanocellulose suspensions' high viscosity and yield stress already at low solid content and poor adhesion to substrates create additional challenges for high-speed processing. Polylactic acid (PLA) is another potential candidate that has reasonably high tolerance against water vapor but rather a poor barrier against oxygen. The current work explores the possibility of combining both these materials into thin multilayer coatings onto a paperboard. A custom-built slot-die was used to coat either microfibrillated cellulose or cellulose nanocrystals onto a pigment-coated baseboard in a continuous process. These were subsequently coated with PLA using a pilot-scale extrusion coater. Low-density polyethylene was used as for reference extrusion coating. Cationic starch precoating and corona treatment improved the adhesion at nanocellulose/baseboard and nanocellulose/PLA interfaces, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate for nanocellulose + PLA coatings remained lower than that of the control PLA coating, even at a high relative humidity of 90% (38 °C). The multilayer coating had 98% lower oxygen transmission rate compared to just the PLA-coated baseboard, and the heptane vapor transmission rate reduced by 99% in comparison to the baseboard. The grease barrier for nanocellulose + PLA coatings increased 5-fold compared to nanocellulose alone and 2-fold compared to PLA alone. This approach of processing nanocellulose and PLA into multiple layers utilizing slot-die and extrusion coating in tandem has the potential to produce a barrier packaging paper that is both 100% biobased and biodegradable.

Abstract:Bioplastic films with excellent barrier properties were successfully prepared from poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT), thermoplastic starch (TPS), and poly((R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐(R)‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx). The rheological, mechanical, barrier, dynamic mechanical properties, and microstructure of the PBAT/TPS/PHBHHx films were studied. The transition of the continuous phase in the blend significantly affects the properties of the films. The increase in PHBHHx content results in its transition from a dispersed phase to a continuous phase. This phase transition, along with the consequent increase in the crystallinity of PHBHHx, greatly enhances the barrier properties of the film. The percentage crystalline degree of PHBHHx increased from 10.9% to 25.1% with increasing PHBHHx content from 0% to 50%. The film containing 50% PHBHHx showed a significant decrease in both water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) by 75.1% and 69.6%, respectively. It found that the film containing 50% PHBHHx exhibited a decrease of elongation at break from 505% to less than 10% but an unusual increase of tensile strength after a 72‐hour aging test, which is different from PBAT and PBAT/TPS films. However, this indicates that the extensibility of PHBHHx is more susceptible to the effects of aging test, leading to the rearrangement of polymer chains from disordered to ordered morphology.

Abstract:Particle dispersion assessment of the EVOH composite films with NC, MCC, SiO2 and CNC, and subsequent production of multilayer films, with an EVOH inner layer (or EVOH with NC or MCC incorporation) and LDPE in the outer layers, to analyze optical and barrier properties, to examine the feasibility for use in flexible packaging. To preserve food from moisture and oxygen, polymers, such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) are used in multilayer structures to provide oxygen barrier, while low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) is used for a water vapor barrier. While this material combination is functionally ideal, it may not comply with the new packaging recycling guidelines. Some European markets have implemented rules that limit the weight percentage of EVOH in LDPE films. One way to increase recyclability is by reducing the amount of EVOH in the film structure while maintaining the packaging's oxygen barrier properties. To achieve this, it is necessary to improve the barrier properties of EVOH. With this objective in mind, this study evaluated the incorporation of nanoclays (NC), cellulose microcrystals (MCC), silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) into an EVOH matrix. The results indicate that NC and MCC facilitate a stable blown film extrusion process and have a better dispersion in the EVOH matrix. Based on this finding, three‐layer films (with an ABA configuration) consisting of LDPE (A) and EVOH (7 μm layer) with 0.5 or 1 wt.% MCC or NC (B) were produced to protect the EVOH from moisture and enable blown film processing. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) values were lowest for 0.5 wt.% NC and 1 wt.% MCC incorporation. Although the films with micro and nanoparticles had increased haze, this did not affect the visibility of the packaged food.

Abstract:Due to lack of previous research, this study examined the factors associated with non-compliance in follow up human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing among health care workers after blood and/or body fluid exposure. A descriptive correlation design was used with 178 health care workers who did not return for recommended follow up HIV testing post-blood and/or body fluid exposure at three urban hospitals. The 36 question Likert scale was designed to measure the five concepts of the Health Belief Model: susceptibility, seriousness, benefit, barriers, and health motivation. The internal consistency reliability measured .48. Forty five subjects (25%) returned the questionnaire. The most significant factor determined to affect return rate for follow up testing was related to benefits and susceptibility (F=4.57, df=2,42, R=.42, P=.02). Return rate was most significantly correlated with the idea of decreasing the chance of dying from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (r= .31, P=.04). Similar results of recommended future studies may indicate changes in post-exposure education or institutional policies and procedures.

Abstract:Abstract One of the routes to minimize the environmental impact of plastics waste is the use of bio-sourced and biodegradable alternatives, particularly for packaging applications. Although Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are attractive candidates for food packaging, they have poor processability, particularly for extrusion film blowing. Thus, one relatively successful alternative has been blending PHA with a biodegradable polymer. This work proposes film blowing of a co-extruded Poly (hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) layer with a poly butylene adipateco- terephtalate (PBAT) layer to enhance bubble stability, mechanical and barrier properties. Co-extrusion is detailed, together with the different strategies followed to improve adhesion between film layers and the PHB content in the films. Films with thicknesses below 50 micron and elongation at break beyond 500% were consistently produced.

Abstract:In the present study, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) with 44 mol % ethylene content (EVOH44) was managed to be processed, for the first time, by electrospinning assisted by the coaxial technology of solvent jacket. In addition to this, different suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), with contents ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 wt %, were also electrospun to obtain hybrid bio-/non-bio nanocomposites. The resultant fiber mats were thereafter optimally annealed to promote interfiber coalescence at 145 °C, below the EVOH44 melting point, leading to continuous transparent fiber-based films. The morphological analysis revealed the successful distribution of CNCs into EVOH44 up to contents of 0.5 wt %. The incorporation of CNCs into the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer caused a decrease in the crystallization and melting temperatures (TC and Tm) of about 12 and 7 °C, respectively, and also crystallinity. However, the incorporation of CNCs led to enhanced thermal stability of the copolymer matrix for a nanofiller content of 1.0 wt %. Furthermore, the incorporation of 0.1 and 0.5 wt % CNCs produced increases in the tensile modulus (E) of ca. 38% and 28%, respectively, but also yielded a reduction in the elongation at break and toughness. The oxygen barrier of the hybrid nanocomposite fiber-based films decreased with increasing the CNCs content, but they were seen to remain high barrier, especially in the low relative humidity (RH) regime, i.e., at 20% RH, showing permeability values lower than 0.6 × 10-20 m3·m·m-2·Pa-1·s-1. In general terms, an optimal balance in physical properties was found for the hybrid copolymer composite with a CNC loading of 0.1 wt %. On the overall, the present study demonstrates the potential of annealed electrospun fiber-based high-barrier polymers, with or without CNCs, to develop novel barrier interlayers to be used as food packaging constituents.

Abstract:Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) comprise a family of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters with enhanced sustainable profile and high water vapor barrier. As environmentally friendly materials, nanostructured cellulose-based films, also called nanopapers, such as films made of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs), are also of growing interest due to their high mechanical strength and outstanding oxygen barrier properties at dry conditions. Unfortunately, nanopapers are highly hydrophilic, lacking of sufficient moisture resistance for uses in, for instance, food packaging. The present study reports, for the first time, on the effect of electrospun poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) double side coatings on the morphology, water contact angle, mechanical properties, and barrier performance of CNF and LCNF films. The resultant multilayer structures showed significantly improved water contact resistance, more balanced mechanical properties, and higher barrier performance against water vapor in comparison to the neat nanopapers. Although the PHA-coated nanopapers presented slightly lower aroma barrier due to the intrinsic affinity of PHA for limonene uptake, these sustainable multilayer films further improved the oxygen performance of the nanopapers, showing significant potential as barrier materials even at high humidity conditions. As a result, the here-developed novel films, based on nanopapers double side coated with electrospun PHB and PHBV layers, appear as a very promising fully bio-based material concept for food packaging applications due to their outstanding water vapor and oxygen barrier performance.

Abstract:Abstract This article contributes to the understanding of biobased and biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) bionanocomposites melt processed by pre-industrial methods such as extrusion and injection molding and reinforced by weight contents of 1 and 3 wt% of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) derived from waste streams of the paper industry. Ultrasonic treatment was used for dispersion of the CNC, which was followed by transmission electron microscopy. The thermal properties and the crystallization behavior of bionanocomposites were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning analysis, X-ray diffraction and polarized optical microscopy. Investigations on the bending properties were carried out in conjunction with the analysis of their dynamic mechanical behavior. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the fracture surface. All these analyses give a deep insight into their structure-property relationship. The moisture absorption measurements and gas barrier properties analysis made to the processed bionanocomposites have provided an insight into their behavior under environmental conditions. The PHB bionanocomposites with a low content of 1 wt% CNC were found to have the best dispersion quality, which had a positive effect on almost all mechanical and thermal properties. The increase in crystallinity with the incorporation of CNC also contributed to an improvement in mechanical properties. In addition, the bionanocomposites show a slightly lower tendency to absorb moisture and better barrier properties to oxygen and water vapor. These findings showed that these bionanocomposites are suitable for use in the packaging industry. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In the area of food packaging, multilayer films are widely used to prevent the penetration of O 2, CO 2 and H 2 O (vapor), but these multilayer films cannot be recycled and re-used. In a series of papers, we will discuss the development of mono-layer barrier films with high barrier properties. Transparent mono-layer barrier films were made based on blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET, ≥80 wt% and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA, ≤20 wt%, (a well-known high barrier polymer) using simultaneous biaxial stretching process. The morphology of the PGA phase was transferred from a spherical structure into an oriented lamellar structure upon solid state stretching, which increased the tortuous path of gas molecules. As a result, the oxygen permeability (OP) of PET was decreased by 90 ± 2.2% after incorporation of the PGA and biaxial stretching (3 × 3). The tensile strength and Young's modulus were increased, with good toughness (elongation at break about 40%) and high transmittance ( T > 80%). Apparently, this work provides a feasible method for preparing recyclable, transparent and high-end barrier mono-layer PET films with a minor content of a second polymer (PGA), and the experimental findings are expected to be applicable to other systems and will be discussed in subsequent papers.

Abstract:The barrier performance and structural lightening of organic materials are increasingly desired and constitute a major challenge for manufacturers, particularly for transport and packaging. A promising technique which tends to emerge in recent years is that of multinanolayer coextrusion. The advantage is that it can produce multilayers made of thousands of very thin layers, leading to new properties due to crystalline morphology changes induced by confinement. This paper is focusing on the study of multinanolayered films with alternated polyethylene (PE), compatibilizer (PEgMA) and polyamide 6 (PA6) layers and made by a forced assembly coextrusion process equipped with layer multiplying elements (LME). PE/PA6 multilayer films consisting of 5 to 2049 layers (respectively 0 to 9 LME) were successfully obtained with well-organized multilayered structure. The evolution of the morphology and the microstructure of these two semi-crystalline polymers, when the thickness of each polymer layer decreases from micro-scale to nano-scale, was correlated to the water and gas transport properties of the PE/PA multilayers. The expected improvement of barrier properties was limited due to the on-edge orientation of crystals in very thin PE and PA6 layers. Despite this change of crystalline morphology, a slight improvement of the gas barrier properties was shown by comparing experimental results with permeabilities predicted on the basis of a serial model developed by considering a PE/PA6 interphase. This interphase observed by TEM images and the on-edge crystal orientation in multilayers were evidenced from mechanical properties showing an increase of the stiffness and the strength.

Abstract:The water vapor barrier and gas barrier properties are very important factors for biodegradable packaging films. Herein, nano-sized hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (hBNNSs) were facilely exfoliated, and novel transparent poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films incorporated with hBNNS were developed. Compared to those properties of neat PBAT/PLA film, the water vapor barrier of PBAT/PLA/hBNNSs films was greatly enhanced by 67%. Meanwhile, the oxygen permeability (OP) and carbon dioxide permeability (CO 2 P) of CS/hBNNSs films are significantly lowered by 65% and 93%, respectively. In addition, their thermal stabilities and mechanical property are also enhanced.

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers for food applications have emerged as a sustainable alternative to reduce plastic waste. In this work, compostable films based on blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and thermoplastic gliadins (TPG) were developed for packaging applications. Firstly, gliadins were extracted from wheat gluten and plasticized with glycerol. Then, PCL/TPG films were prepared by cast-extrusion processing at pilot scale and samples were characterized in terms of their structural, morphological, thermal, mechanical, barrier and optical properties. The addition of TPG increased the glass transition temperature (T g ) of PCL, reduced the oxygen permeability at 0% and 50% relative humidity values, and improved the seal strength properties of the films, having a minimal effect on the thermal stability, transparency, and the high stretchability characteristic of PCL. On the other hand, the presence of gliadins led to more water sensitive materials, resulting in a slight increase in the water vapor permeability. Finally, the home-compostability assessment of the films revealed that the presence of gliadins accelerated the aerobic biodegradation and the disintegration with respect to pristine PCL film, thus, showing the potential interest of the developed materials for sustainable packaging applications.
