Abstract:With the increasing production of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) worldwide, the development of efficient and sustainable strategies for its management is crucial. Pyrolysis of MSS offers several benefits, including volume reduction, pathogen elimination, and energy recovery through the production of biochar, syngas, and bio-oil. However, the process can be limited by the composition of the MSS, which can affect the quality of the biochar. Co-pyrolysis has emerged as a promising solution for the sustainable management of MSS, reducing the toxicity of biochar and improving its physical and chemical properties to expand its potential applications. This review discusses the status of MSS as a feedstock for biochar production. It describes the types and properties of various co-substrates grouped according to European biochar certification requirements, including those from forestry and wood processing, agriculture, food processing residues, recycling, anaerobic digestion, and other sources. In addition, the review addresses the optimization of co-pyrolysis conditions, including the type of furnace, mixing ratio of MSS and co-substrate, co-pyrolysis temperature, residence time, heating rate, type of inert gas, and flow rate. This overview shows the potential of different biomass types for the upgrading of MSS biochar and provides a basis for research into new co-substrates. This approach not only mitigates the environmental impact of MSS but also contributes to the wider goal of achieving a circular economy in MSS management.

Abstract:Soil contamination through heavy metals (HMs) is a serious environmental problem that needs to be addressed. One of the methods of remediating soils contaminated with HMs and reducing the environmental risks associated with them is to immobilize these HMs in the soil using specific amendment(s). The use of biochar as an organic amendment can be an environmentally friendly and practically feasible option, as (i) different types of biomass can be used for biochar production, which contributes to environmental sustainability, and (ii) the functionality of biochar can be improved, enabling efficient immobilization of HMs. Effective use of biochar to immobilize HMs in soil often requires modification of pristine biochar. There are various physical, chemical, and biological methods for modifying biochar that can be used at different stages of pyrolysis, i.e., before pyrolysis, during pyrolysis, and after pyrolysis. Such methods are still being intensively developed by testing different modification approaches in single or hybrid systems and investigating their effects on the immobilization of HMs in the soil and on the properties of the remediated soil. In general, there is more information on biochar modification and its performance in HM immobilization with physical and chemical methods than with microbial methods. This review provides an overview of the main biochar modification strategies related to the pyrolysis process. In addition, recent advances in biochar modification using physical and chemical methods, biochar-based composites, and biochar modified with HM-tolerant microorganisms are presented, including the effects of these methods on biochar properties and the immobilization of HMs in soil. Since modified biochar can have some negative effects, these issues are also addressed. Finally, future directions for modified biochar research are suggested in terms of scope, scale, timeframe, and risk assessment. This review aims to popularize the in situ immobilization of HMs with modified biochar.

Abstract:The huge amounts of sewage sludge produced by municipal wastewater treatment plants induce major environmental and economical issues, calling for advanced disposal methods. Traditional methods for sewage sludge disposal increase greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. Moreover, biochar created from sewage sludge often cannot be used directly in soil applications due to elevated levels of heavy metals and other toxic compounds, which alter soil biota and earthworms. This has limited the application of sewage sludge-derived biochar as a fertilizer. Here, we review biomass and sewage sludge co-pyrolysis with a focus on the stabilization of heavy metals and toxicity reduction of the sludge-derived biochar. We observed that co-pyrolyzing sewage sludge with biomass materials reduced heavy metal concentrations and decreased the environmental risk of sludge-derived biochar by up to 93%. Biochar produced from sewage sludge and biomass co-pyrolysis could enhance the reproduction stimulation of soil biota by 20‒98%. Heavy metals immobilization and transformation are controlled by the co-feed material mixing ratio, pyrolysis temperature, and pyrolysis atmosphere.

Abstract:Large amounts of sewage sludge (SS) and wetland plant wastes are generated in the wastewater treatment system worldwide. The conversion of these solid wastes into biochar through co-pyrolysis could be a promising resource utilization scheme. In this study, biochar was prepared by co-pyrolysis of SS and reed (Phragmites australis, RD) using a modified muffle furnace device under different temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C) and with different mixing ratios (25, 50, and 75 wt.% RD). The physicochemical properties of biochar and the transformation behaviors of phosphorus (P) and heavy metals during the co-pyrolysis process were studied. Compared with single SS pyrolysis, the biochar derived from SS-RD co-pyrolysis had lower yield and ash content, higher pH, C content, and aromatic structure. The addition of RD could reduce the total P content of biochar and promote the transformation from non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) to apatite phosphorus (AP). In addition, co-pyrolysis also reduced the content and toxicity of heavy metals in biochar. Therefore, co-pyrolysis could be a promising strategy to achieve the simultaneous treatment of SS and RD, as well as the production of value-added biochar.

Abstract:The synergistic effects of pyrolysis byproduct, biochar (BC) on heavy metal consolidation, and H2S removal during and after from microwave pyrolysis of municipal sludge were studied in this paper. The results showed that above 80% of heavy metals (Zn and Pb) were enriched in the biochar and the leaching toxicity of both heavy metals was lower than the national emission standards. The chemical specification analysis found the sum of acid-soluble/exchangeable fraction (F1) and reducible fraction (F2) for Pb and Zn metals decreased by 26 and 40%; however, the residual fraction (F4) increased 33 and 46%, which contributed to the good stabilization of heavy metals in biochar. Besides, biochar achieved high H2S removal efficiency of 78.4% compared with the commercial activated carbon (AC). Furthermore, the biochar prepared by microwave pyrolysis had excellent adsorption performance, which was attributed to its larger specific surface area of 476.87m2/g under nitrogen atmosphere at 650oC compared with traditional pyrolysis. The mechanism analysis showed that microwave pyrolysis resulted in the high alkaline condition and formation of a large number of microparticles containing large metal elements on the biochar surface, which mainly contributed to the stabilization of heavy metals. The metal oxides adsorbed on the surface of biochar can catalyze the oxidation of H2S absorption, which will change the pH atmosphere of biochar reducing the leaching behavior of heavy metals. This study provided the good application potential of solid waste (biochar) for simultaneous heavy metal stabilization and H2S capture.

Abstract:The efficient management of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) daily produced worldwide by biological wastewater treatment process is nowadays of utmost importance. Classic treatment/disposal methods are affected by efficiency and/or safety issues. Innovative thermochemical treatments are gaining momentum as promising alternatives. Pyrolysis of MSS can result in the recovery of precious resources, such as nutrients and organic matter, and their conversion into three valuable fractions, i.e. biochar, bio-oil, and pyrolysis gas. These products are employable in innovative biorefinery pathways towards a wide range of value-added materials. In this review, an integrated biorefinery platform for MSS valorization is presented. After a brief introduction on MSS properties and issues related to its management, a deep focus on the influence that the feedstock and pyrolysis conditions have on the product yields and composition was conducted. Innovative valorization routes for biochar, bio-oil and pyrolysis gas were extensively discussed by highlighting challenges, opportunities, advantages and drawbacks. The characteristics required by these products to be efficiently valorized, as well as the main solution for their enhancement, were described. Additionally, economic considerations on MSS pyrolysis derived from full-scale applications conducted at the European and global level were elaborated. Finally, future perspectives about biochar, bio-oil and pyrolysis gas employment in cutting-edge upcycling routes have been reported.

Abstract:Careful designing of biochar (BC) employing biological and industrial waste materials has gained much attention to improve soil health via reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in the contaminated-soil. Herein, a forty-day pot experiment was conducted to explore the influence of micro plastic (MP) embedded sewage-sludge (SS). The effects of SS and MP dosage ratios (0e15%) on the physicochemical properties of the modified-biochars were also studied with slow-pyrolyzed (SBC-500 degrees C) and flash-pyrolyzed biochar (FSBC-70 0 degrees C). Our investigations found remarkable positive synergistic effects for the SBC-15% involving increased soil pH, CEC, high carbon contents, and alleviation in Cr and Pb leaching than control and FSBC-70 0 degrees C. Besides, SBC-15% containing high carbon functional groups can effectively mitigate the Cr and Pb availability stress by intensifying the adsorption or passivation in the amended-soil, thereby, significantly reducing the Cr and Pb EDTA-extractable contents. Chemical fractionation analyses further confirmed that SBC-15% addition was more helpful for Cr and Pb immobilization and ultimately reducing transfer-rate, bioconcentration-factor, and translocation-factor as compared to FSBC-15% and control due to its higher alkalinity, surface area/porosity, and available carbon functional groups. The maize biomass (root and shoot) increased by more than 50%, and the activities of soil enzymes such as urease, alkaline phosphatase, and glucosidase enzyme activities were also enhanced. This ecologically feasible strategy would pave an efficient way to make full use of the SS and MP for the biochar synthesis with excellent soil remediation performance. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Hydrothermally treated sewage sludge was pyrolyzed at temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C with antibiotic mycelial residue addition ratios of 0, 10, 25, and 50 wt%. The results showed that co-pyrolysis could obviously improve biochar properties. Specifically, adding antibiotic mycelial residue increased the aromaticity and raised the higher heating value of the biochar, which indicates its better potential as fuel. The enrichment in functional groups improved the surface properties of biochar, indicating its better applicability. Additionally, the heavy metal concentrations in biochar were diluted by adding antibiotic mycelial residue, which led to lower toxic inputs to the environment. Moreover, heavy metals were transformed to more stable fractions after co-pyrolysis. A higher pyrolysis temperature and greater antibiotic mycelial residue amounts led to better immobilization of heavy metals, thus preventing their leaching to the environment. This work proposes a promising technique for the synergetic treatment of sewage sludge and antibiotic mycelial residue for improved biochar formation.

Abstract:Municipal sewage sludge (MSS) is an inevitable byproduct of wastewater treatment, with increasing amounts year by year worldwide. The development of environmentally and economically acceptable methods for the sustainable management of MSS is a major environmental challenge. Nowadays, sludge management practices, besides the commonly used stabilization methods, focus attention on alternative sludge-disposal pathways, which encompass enhanced energy and valuable-resource recovery. This review presents the recent advances in the recovery of selected value-added products from sludge. Because of the high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, waste MSS can be a nutrient source (e.g., struvite). This paper discusses the conditions of and advances in the technology of struvite recovery. As in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) of biological sludge, alginate-like exopolymers (ALEs) are present in MSS systems that treat municipal wastewater. The yields, dynamics in content, and characterization of ALEs and their possible applications were analyzed. MSS is an important source of humic substances. Their occurrence, characterization, and yields in various types of MSS (e.g., untreated, composted, and digested sludge) and main methods of application are presented. The important aspects and trends of MSS pyrolysis, including the thermochemical conversion to biochar, are discussed in this review. The characterization of biochar derived from MSS and the assessment of the environmental risks are also covered. This paper explores the potential use of biochar derived from MSS in various applications, including soil amendment, carbon sequestration, and environmental remediation.

Abstract:The treatment of sewage sludge (SS) is becoming one of the most important issues of the wastewater treatment cycle in European Union. Pyrolysis of SS is typically accompanied by production of pyrolysis oil, gas (syngas) and solid char product called either charcoal or biochar, when applied in agriculture. The main aim of this review is to summarize the knowledge on disposal of SS, thermal treatment of SS, especially pyrolysis, the characterization of produced sludge-derived biochar and to summarize the requirements for certification of SS biochar in agricultural application. The description of analyses includes determination of solid yield of biochar, immobilization of heavy metals in SS biochar, and structure of biochar including the surface morphology and specific surface area. It is concluded that pyrolysis represents an eco-friendly treatment of SS giving eco-friendly products, particularly biochar, and therefore it may represent a solution in terms of circular economy, carbon sequestration, contaminant immobilization, greenhouse gas reduction, soil fertilization and improvement of water retention.

Abstract:Heavy metals, including Cd, As, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Mn in sewage sludge (SS) are among the greatest impediments to SS application because of their potential toxicity to living organisms and latent environmental pollution risks. In this study, hydrothermal treatment (HT)/alkaline HT combined with pyrolysis was used to treat SS for heavy metal immobilization . The heavy metal characteristics, including total, fraction, and leaching concentrations and potential ecological risks, were comprehensively investigated to ensure the safe application of biochar. The results showed that the heavy metals mainly remained in the hydrochar and biochar. Additionally, both HT and alkaline HT promoted the residual fractions of Cr, Zn, Ni, and Cu in biochar. Furthermore, alkaline HT-aided pyrolysis was more effective for immobilizing Zn and Ni with their residual fractions increasing by 100% and 60% respectively, compared with direct sludge pyrolysis. Moreover, the ecological risk of heavy metals in SS significantly decreased from 57.27 to 30.05 after alkaline HT-combined pyrolysis treatment, contributing to the low potential ecological risk of SS-based biochar. This study provides a promising strategy for converting SS to biochar with improved heavy metal immobilization.

Abstract:Synergistic remediation of heavy metal (HM) contaminated soil using beneficial microorganisms (BM) and plants is a common and effective in situ bioremediation method. However, the shortcomings of this approach are the low colonisation of BM under high levels of heavy metal stress (HMS) and the poor state of plant growth. Previous studies have overlooked the potential of biochar to mitigate the above problems and aid in-situ remediation. Therefore, this paper describes the characteristics and physicochemical properties of biochar. It is proposed that biochar enhances plant resistance to HMS and aids in situ bioremediation by increasing colonisation of BM and HM stability. On this basis, the paper focuses on the following possible mechanisms: specific biochar-derived organic matter regulates the transport of HMs in plants and promotes mycorrhizal colonisation via the abscisic acid signalling pathway and the karrikin signalling pathway; promotes the growth-promoting pathway of indole-3-acetic acid and increases expression of the nodule-initiating gene NIN; improvement of soil HM stability by ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption, redox and complex precipitation mechanisms. And this paper summarizes guidelines on how to use biochar-assisted remediation based on current research for reference. Finally, the paper identifies research gaps in biochar in the direction of promoting beneficial microbial symbiotic mechanisms, recognition and function of organic molecules, and factors affecting practical applications.

Abstract:The presence of unstable heavy metals in sewage sludge (SS) restricts its resource utilization. In this study, Ca(H2PO4)2 and SS were co-pyrolyzed to produce biochar, which contained relatively stable heavy metals. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission techniques were used to analyze the physical and chemical properties and heavy metal content of the biochar. The results indicated that co-pyrolysis of SS with Ca(H2PO4)2 resulted in the production of more stable heavy metals in the SS. The optimal co-pyrolysis conditions were a blended ratio of 15% Ca(H2PO4)2, 650 °C final temperature, 15 °C min-1, and 60 min retention time. The potential stabilization mechanisms of heavy metals were as follows: (1) organic decomposition and moisture (sourced from Ca(H2PO4)2 decomposition) evaporation resulted in greater biochar surface porosity; (2) phosphorous substances were complexed with heavy metals to form metal phosphates; and (3) the mixture reactions among inorganic substances, pyrolysis products of organics, and heavy metals resulted in the formation of highly aromatic metallic compounds. Additionally, the potential environmental risks posed by the heavy metals decreased from 65.73 (in SS) to 4.39 (in biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of SS and 15% of Ca(H2PO4)2). This study reports on a good approach for the disposal of SS and the reduction of its environmental risk.

Abstract:In recent years, soil contamination has become a global environmental problem. Biochar is a porous and carbon-rich material produced from pyrolysis of biomass residues from agricultural and forestry production. It can be used to immobilize heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil through adsorption. Here we report results obtained from our recent studies focusing on the interactions between biochar and soil contaminants. Incubation and pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of biochar type, application rate, and particle size on soil properties, bioavailability, mobility, and redistribution of the heavy metals in soil and the accumulation of heavy metals in the plants. Batch equilibration method was used to explore the effect of biochar type, aging process, dosage, and soil organic carbon content on adsorption and desorption of organic pollutants (e.g., phthalic acid esters, or PAEs) in soil. Incubation and pot trials were conducted to evaluate the impact of biochar on the degradation and bioavailability of PAEs in soils. Our results demonstrate that biochar can potentially be used as soil amendment for remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. The efficacy of biochar application on immobilization of contaminants varies with the type, application rate, and particle size of biochars, soil properties, and contaminant types.
The Effect of Remediation of Soil Co-Contaminated by Cu and Cd in a Semi-Arid Area with Sewage Sludge-Derived Biochar

Abstract:In this study, biochar derived from sewage sludge was applied to remediate Cu and Cd co-polluted soil in semi-arid areas for the first time, in which the effects of biochar on the improvement of soil physicochemical and biological properties as well as the immobilization of Cu and Cd were investigated. Soil water holding capacity increased by 0.22–2.74%, soil CEC increased by 0.52–4.06 units, soil SOM content increased by 1.41–5.97 times, and urease and catalase activities increased by 0.012–0.032 mg·g−1·24 h−1, 0.18–2.95 mg H2O2·g−1, but soil pH increased only slightly by 0.69 units after biochar application. In addition, although the total content of these two metals in the soil increased with the use of biochar, the content of DTPA-Cu and Cd decreased by −0.128–0.291 mg/kg, 0–0.037 mg/kg, with the increase in biochar application, and the content of acid-soluble Cu in the soil decreased from 27.42 mg/kg to 3.76 mg/kg, the mobility and bioavailability of these two metals in the soil decreased. Finally, the complexation of organic functional groups with the soil dominates the immobilization process of metals, especially Cu. These findings suggest that biochar from sewage sludge can effectively improve soil quality and remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils in semi-arid regions. Abstract:Biochar is a carbon-rich material which can be prepared from various organic waste feedstock, such as agricultural wastes and municipal sewage sludge. Biochar has received increasing attention due to its unique feature such as high carbon content and cation exchange capacity, large specific surface area and stable structure. This review systematically analyzed and summarized the preparation, characterization, modification, and especially environmental application of biochar, based on more than 200 papers published in recent 10 year, to provide an overview of biochar with a particular on its environmental application. The physiochemical properties of biochar varies with the types of feedstocks. Pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal carbonization are the common methods for biochar preparation. Biochar can be modified by acid, alkali, oxidizing agents, metal ions, carbonaceous materials, steam and gas purging. The selection of modification methods depends on the environmental application fields. The biochar has been used for soil remediation and amelioration, carbon sequestration, organic solid waste composting, decontamination of water and wastewater, catalyst and activator, electrode materials and electrode modifier, which were discussed in detail. The application of biochar in the carbon sequestration should be further investigated at similar experimental conditions to obtain the consistent results. The effect of biochar on soil microbes should be further investigated to elucidate the dominant reason for the improvement of soil fertility based on different soil and feedstock. In addition, more attention should be paid to the release of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from biochar to the environment when biochar is practically used for the environmental remediation. The relationship between biochar structure and activation capability should be further investigated to clarify the activation mechanism of persulfate by biochar when it is used as activator. In summary, biochar has wide application prospect in environmental remediation, and the mechanism of biochar in environmental application should be further investigated.<h5>Graphical abstract</h5>

Abstract:Sewage sludge (SS) holds promise for environmental, agricultural, and energy applications. However, its direct use is limited due to contaminant concerns. Pyrolysis can turn SS into beneficial products like bio-oil and biochar. This study explores biochar production from SS pyrolysis and its potential for pollutant adsorption. The effects of pyrolysis temperature (500, 650, 850 °C) and SS particle size (800–1000 μm, 400–800 μm, 100–400 μm, ≤100 μm) on biochar yield and adsorption capacity for methylene blue and mercury were investigated. Regardless of particle size and temperature, SS-derived biochar exhibited second-order adsorption kinetics. Biochar with a particle size of 100–400 μm displayed the highest potential for methylene blue adsorption. Subsequent alkali treatment (biochar:NaOH = 3:4) of these particles significantly increased specific surface area from 27.5 m2/g to 144.27 m2/g and further enhanced adsorption capacities for both methylene blue (from 9 mg/g to 35 mg/g) and mercury (from 17 mg/g to 36 mg/g). These findings suggest that SS-derived biochar, particularly the 100–400 μm fraction with alkali treatment, presents a promising cost-effective adsorbent for water treatment, aligning with circular economy principles.

Abstract:Mining activities causes heavy metal pollution and adversely affect the ecological safety and human well-being. Phytoremediation-biochar synergy can effectively remediate mine spoils contaminated with heavy metals (HM). A review which focuses exclusively on the application of biochar assisted phytoremediation in HM contaminated mine spoil is lacking. Mechanisms of metal immobilization by biochar, potential plants and contaminated biomass disposal methods has also been reviewed. Availability of biochar feedstock and production conditions, optimization of application rate, application techniques, selection of suitable hyperaccumulators and cost optimization of bulk biochar production are the key to a successful biochar-based HM remediation of mine tailings and coalmine spoil. Presently, herbs and shrubs are mostly used as phytoremediators, use of woody trees would encourage a long-term metal sequestration which would reduce the cost of biomass disposal. Also, use of non-edible plants would prevent the plants from entering the food chain. For a holistic biochar-phytoremediation technique, incineration and pyrolysis can effectively dispose contaminated biomass. Abstract:Heavy metal/metalloids (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil have caused serious environmental problems, compromised agriculture quality, and have detrimental effects on all forms of life including humans. There is a need to develop appropriate and effective remediation methods to resolve combined contaminated problems. Although conventional technologies exist to tackle contaminated soils, application of biochar as an effective renewable adsorbent for enhanced bioremediation is considered by many scientific researchers as a promising strategy to mitigate HM/PAH co-contaminated soils. This review aims to: (i) provide an overview of biochar preparation and its application, and (ii) critically discuss and examine the prospects of (bio)engineered biochar for enhancing HMs/PAHs co-remediation efficacy by reducing their mobility and bioavailability. The adsorption effectiveness of a biochar largely depends on the type of biomass material, carbonisation method and pyrolysis conditions. Biochar induced soil immobilise and remove metal ions via various mechanisms including electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, complexation and precipitation. PAHs remediation mechanisms is achieved via pore filling, hydrophobic effect, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bond and partitioning. During last decade, biochar engineering (modification) via biological and chemical approaches to enhance contaminant removal efficiency has garnered greater interests. Hence, the development and application of (bio)engineered biochars in risk management, contaminant management associated with HM/PAH co-contaminated soil.
