Abstract:Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) are materials with strong nonlinearity, which will show hysteresis when it works. In the current paper, a differential model is proposed to describe the hysteresis in MSMAs caused by magnetic field induced martensite reorientation based on Landau theory of phase transitions. First, the three-dimensional model is simplified into a one-dimensional case, and the hysteresis in MSMAs is described by three martensite variant orientations. Then, a traditional Landau free energy is introduced, and the traditional Landau model is obtained by using the Euler–Lagrange equation. However, it is found that the prediction accuracy of the model is not ideal compared with the experimental data. Thus, an improved model is proposed, and the traditional Landau free energy is replaced by a function that can be determined by the easily measured physical quantities in the experimental curve. Numerical experiments show that the prediction effect of the improved model is much better than the traditional Landau model, and the stress dependence is also demonstrated. Moreover, the proposed improved model has the advantages for dynamic analysis and control with its differential form. Therefore, the frequency dependence of the improved model is demonstrated and a feedback linearization control methodology is proposed to make the system develops in the desired trajectory.

Abstract:The hysteresis compensation method is studied.A control system is established based on Jiles-Atherton hysteresis model and its main parameters are introduced.Then,according to Jiles-Atherton hysteresis model,the variation relation between magnetization and field intensity is analyzed.Finally,based on above analysis,a hysteresis compensation method using the width of hysteresis ring to recalculate the initial value for recursive algorithm at turning point is proposed.The experiment results indicate that,comparing with a actuator without hysteresis compensation, there is no time delay in proposed system and the settled time is 12 ms reduced for step response,Also,there is no time delay and the MSE is 0.19 μm improved for sine wave tracking,which shows that the compensation method can overcome the hysteresis effect and improve positioning precision effectively.

Abstract:Magnetostrictive actuator, for its merits of relatively low voltage and high force, has been increasingly applied in many applications, such as vibration control, aviation, positioner, etc. At low drive level, magnetostrictive actuator presents linear relation between strain or displacement and input voltage or input current, while non-linear appears when applied moderate or high drive level. To achieve accurate control for high drive level, non-linear, including saturation and hysteresis, must be compensated. Sliding mode control, a robust control scheme, can handle these non-linear. As magnetostrictive actuator modelled in Jiles-Atherton model, the relation of magnetic field H and bulk magnetization M, hysteresis, is divided into anhysteresis and deviation from anhysteresis. Saturation can be compensated by inversion of anhysteresis (free-hysteresis) and then, hysteresis, represented as the deviation from anhysteresis, is compensated with sliding mode control. In section I, introduction of magnetostrictive actuator characters and compensation methods for its non-linear is presented. Then, Jiles-Atherton model based on domain wall theory is introduced in section II. Next, the design procedures of sliding-mode controller are given. Control law for GMA position tracking is derived as well. Simulation and its results are shown in Section IV. And the conclusion is made at Section V.
Nonlinear Preisach Model and High Order Hystersis Modeling for Giant Magnetostrictive Actuator

Abstract:The wiping-out property and the comgruency property are considered the necessary conditions for a hysteresis nonlinearity to be represented by the classical Preisach model,but in fact,though the wiping-out property agrees with the experiment results,the comgruency property is often experimentally proved to be unsatisfactory when running a giant magnetostritive actuator(GMA) on a high order hysteresis loops.On the basis of the classical model,a modified generalized Preisach model is presented,which relaxes the strict congruency requirement on the hysteresis loops of a GMA.A numerical expression of the model is derived in details,and the identification of that which needs first-order and second-order reversal curve experimental datasets simultaneously.A sinusoidal input signal is loaded to the GMA,and then the outputs of hysteresis are calculated by using this model.The results show that,compared with the classical model,the prediction errors to second-and three-order hysteresis loops are reduced by 34% and 33% respectively.
Modelling Hysteretic Behaviour in Magnetorheological Fluids and Dampers Using Phase-Transition Theory

Abstract:A dynamical mathematical model is proposed to model the hysteretic behaviour of magnetorheological fluids and dampers using phase-transition theory. To construct the model involving hysteresis, the magnetorheological fluids are assumed to be switchable between different phases upon the application of a shear strain rate, with one solid-like phase and two fluid-like phases. The Landau theory for phase transition is employed to model the dynamics of the phase transition in the fluids. The proposed model is able to capture hysteresis loops, and is rate dependent (frequency dependent). A comparison between predicted and experimental behaviour of the damper is presented, and perfect agreement is obtained.

Abstract:The Jiles–Atherton (JA) model is widely used in real-time hysteresis estimation for its better physical understanding and less experimental efforts. However, the inherent defects of JA model may lead to some nonphysical solutions, including negative differential permeability, non-closure of minor loops, and asymmetry of centered minor loops. To deal with such problems, a limiter for differential permeability and a scaling factor for loop closure are generally adopted. However, the existing methods may cause loops’ edges overlapping and cannot solve the asymmetry of centered minor loops. Therefore, a new equation for irreversible magnetization is proposed to solve the negative differential permeability and the edges overlapping. Also, to improve the fitting performance, the JA coefficients are adjusted for different fields and different loops’ turning points. In addition, a scaling factor for centered minor loops is developed to deal with the asymmetry. The factor only needs prior knowledge of minor loops’ starting points. Besides, a modified stack model is proposed, which can extract enough information for coefficients lookup and scaling factors calculation and can realize real-time hysteresis estimation for arbitrary field. Finally, the estimation results are verified by experiments on a toroidal transformer.

Abstract:In the current paper, a nonlinear differential algebraic approach is proposed for the modeling of hysteretic dynamics of polycrystalline ferromagnetic materials. The model is constructed by employing a phenomenological theory to the magnetization orientation switching. For the modeling of hysteresis in polycrystalline ferromagnetic materials, the single crystal model is applied to each magnetic domain along its own principal axis. The overall dynamics of the polycrystalline materials is obtained by taking a weighted combination of the dynamics of all magnetic domains. The weight function for the combination is taken as the distribution function of the principal axes. Numerical simulations are performed and comparisons with its experimental counterparts are presented. The hysteretic dynamics caused by orientation switching processes is accurately captured by the proposed model. Minor hysteresis loops associated with partial-amplitude loadings are also captured. Rate dependence of the hysteresis loops are inherently incorporated into the model due to its differential nature.

Abstract:This article presents a new iterative learning control algorithm based on inverse model to decrease the hysteresis-caused tracking error of a giant magnetostrictive actuator. The first iteration input is calculated by the inverse model of the giant magnetostrictive actuator system according to the desired output. Compared to a standard iterative learning control algorithm-in which the first iteration input usually is proportional to the desired output-the proposed algorithm converges more rapidly. Performance of the approach is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show that the inverse model-based iterative learning control converges about twice as fast as standard iterative learning control and reduces the hysteresis-caused error of giant magnetostrictive actuator to 0.5% of the total displacement range, which is comparable to the noise level of sensor measurement. Two sets of model parameters were identified by 0-1.5 and 0-5 V major hysteresis loop, respectively, and evaluated. The best convergence rate is obtained with the former case.

Abstract:Establishing effective hysteresis nonlinear model was the key in the using process of giant magnetostrictive material.The hysteresis phenomenon and features are introduced and the status of the domestic and overseas scholars' study on the hysteresis modeling was reviewed.The methods are divided into two categories: mathematic models and mechanism model.Different models are compared from its history,limitation and the difficulty of realization.Two typical models are discussed emphatically,such as Preisach model and J-A model.Through analysis,the future research direction of the hysteresis modeling was forecasted.

Abstract:This paper proposes an estimation model of hysteresis loss based on the mapping of the hysteresis loop conducted through tiny material samples with the aid of the Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID). This approach allows precise measurement of hysteresis loops. The aim of this paper is to develop a precise estimation model for hysteresis loss, one component of core loss, so as to improve the overall estimation accuracy of the entire core loss under complex excitations. First, with the help of the SQUID system and measurements conducted on tiny samples, the proposed model manages to minimize the impact of eddy current throughout the measurement and the modeling of hysteresis loss. This contrasts with the use of the conventional Steinmetz model and its modifications. Moreover, compared with methods including the modified Steinmetz equation (MSE) and the generalized Steinmetz equation (GSE) which merely focuses on the overall iron loss under simple non-sinusoidal excitations, the model presented here enables the estimation of hysteresis loss under complex excitations where multiple peaks and DC-bias take place. This approach will be very useful in situations such as those requiring pulse-width modulation (PWM) excited converters which are quite common on occasions including wind power systems. The estimation error of this model on the actual coil is within 15% under given excitations.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic materials are widely used for magnetic cores in electromagnetic devices such as inductors, transformers, generators, and motors. In a magnetic core, as the magnetic field varies with time, core loss is generated due to magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents. For performance analysis and design optimization of electromagnetic devices, it is essential to model the dynamic magnetization processes and associated core losses accurately. This paper proposes a hybrid model of dynamic magnetic hysteresis, which incorporates the effects of both hysteresis and eddy currents, by combining the dynamic Jiles-Atherton and Preisach models based on backpropagation neural networks. This model can accurately reproduce the dynamic hysteresis loops and core losses under different excitations. The numerical simulations are verified by experimental measurements.

Abstract:Purpose Although the original Jiles‐Atherton (J‐A) hysteresis model is able to represent a wide range of major hysteresis loops, in particular those of soft magnetic materials, it can produces non‐physical minor loops with its classical equations. The purpose of this paper is to show a modification in the J‐A hysteresis model in order to improve the minor and inner loops representation. The proposed technique allows the J‐A model representing non‐centred minor loops with accuracy as well as improving the symmetric inner loops representation. Design/methodology/approach Only the irreversible magnetization component is slightly modified keeping unchanged the other model equations and the model simplicity. The high‐variation rate of the irreversible magnetization, which causes the non‐physical behaviour of minor loops, is limited by introducing a new physical parameter linked to the losses. Contrarily to other modifications of the original model found in the literature, the previously knowledge of the magnetic field waveform is not needed in this case. Findings The modified hysteresis model is validated by comparison with experimental results. A good agreement is observed between calculations and measurements. The modified model retains the low‐computational effort and numerical simplicity of the original one. Originality/value This paper shows that a classical scalar hysteresis model can be suitably used to take into account the minor loops behaviour and be included in a finite element code. The methodology is useful for the design and analysis of electromagnetic devices under distorted flux patterns.

Abstract:The accuracy of the micro-positioning system impelled by a magnetic shape memory alloy-driven actuator (MSMADA), is severely restricted by the frequency-dependent hysteresis nonlinearity. Moreover, the actuating accuracy is further affected by various operating factors such as load and temperature. In this study, a Duhem model (DM) identified online by a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy neural network (TSFNN-DM) is innovatively proposed for describing the frequency-dependent hysteresis nonlinearity of the MSMADA. The DM, which has the explicit function expression, is one of the popular differential equation-based hysteresis models. However, the determination of the DM parameters is difficult and hinders its further applications. The TSFNN, which combines the advantages of easy expressing of the fuzzy inference system and self-adjustment ability of the NN, is employed to identify the DM parameters online. The rationality of the developed method is proved by a Taylor expansion in theory. Plenty of experiments verify that the proposed TSFNN-DM method is an efficient manner to capture the frequency-dependent hysteresis nonlinearity under different working conditions.
Modeling and parameter identification of hysteresis in giant magnetostrictive actuator based on Preisach theory

Abstract:A Preisach-based numerical model for describing the nonlinear hysteresis of a reciprocating type giant magnetostrictive actuator(GMA) was established.The Preisach plane was discretized into L levels uniformly,and a constrained least-squares algorithm was employed to identify a discrete approximation to the Preisach measure.Then the model was implemented with first order reversal experiment data(FOD).Experiment was carried out on labVIEW virtual instrument development platform to verify the identification of the measure,in which GMA was applied at a low frequency(1 Hz) to cancel out the eddy effect.The results revealed that the algorithm was effective,and the error between the real displacements of GMA and the theoretical data calculated by the model was less 6%.Further analysis shows that the congruency restriction of Preisach theory to hysteresis is the main reason for producing the prediction error,so the only way to reduce the error is to modify the theory to relax the restriction.

Abstract:Due to the existence of multicoupled nonlinear factors in the giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA), building precise mathematical model is highly important to study GMA’s characteristics and control strategies. Minor hysteresis loops near the bias magnetic field would be often applied because of its relatively good linearity. Load, friction, and disc spring stiffness seriously affect the output characteristics of the GMA in high frequency. Therefore, the current-displacement dynamic minor loops mathematical model coupling of electric-magnetic-machine is established according to Jiles-Atherton (J-A) dynamic model of hysteresis material, GMA structural dynamic equation, Ampere loop circuit law, and nonlinear piezomagnetic equation and demonstrates its correctness and effectiveness in the experiments. Finally, some laws are achieved between key structural parameters and output characteristics of GMA, which provides important theoretical foundation for structural design.

Abstract:Background: Due to experimental equipment limitations, it is usually difficult to measure the quasi-static hysteresis loop at extremely low frequencies, which inevitably introduces errors in the static hysteresis model. Objective: This study aims to propose a method for calculating the static hysteresis loops of grainoriented silicon steel sheets so as to improve the accuracy of the static and dynamic hysteresis model. Methods: The parameters n0 and V0 in the magnetic field strength expression of the excess loss are determined by the measured losses within the range of 0-100Hz. Subsequently, the dynamic components in the quasi-static hysteresis loops are eliminated. Furthermore, a dynamic hysteresis model is established based on the loss and field separation theory, which incorporates the inverse Preisach model. Results: The dynamic hysteresis loops of the grain-oriented silicon steel sheets are measured in the range of 8-250Hz and compared with the results of both the improved model and the original model. Conclusion: Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the improved model. The proposed method for calculating static hysteresis loops has universal applicability and is meaningful for accurate simulation and prediction of magnetic properties in soft magnetic materials.

Abstract:This paper addresses the development of a one-dimension model for quantifying magnetic-elastic-thermal coupling and hysteresis inherent to giant magnetostrictive materials. Firstly, the anhysteretic law is modeled by considering the Gibbs free energy function G(σ, M, T), and thermodynamic relations are used to obtain the constitutive expressions. These expressions character the effects of coupling between stress, magnetization, and temperature in the giant magnetostrictive material but hysteresis, i.e. strain and magnetic intensity described by above the constitutive expressions are single-valued function of the magnetization. And then pinning is incorporated to describe hysteresis based on Jiles–Atherton model. The model considered in the paper is demonstrated valid by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. Moreover, the model proposed in the paper is convenient to be used in engineering applications since the parameters referred to the model have definite physical mean and can all be easily determined by experiments.
Modeling analysis of pulsed magnetization process of magnetic core based on inverse Jiles-Atherton model

Abstract:The J-A (Jiles-Atherton) model is widely used to describe the magnetization characteristics of magnetic cores in a low-frequency alternating field. However, this model is deficient in the quantitative analysis of the eddy current loss and residual loss in a high-frequency magnetic field. Based on the decomposition of magnetization intensity, an inverse J-A model is established which uses magnetic flux density B as an input variable. Static and dynamic core losses under high frequency excitation are separated based on the inverse J-A model. Optimized parameters of the inverse J-A model are obtained based on particle swarm optimization. The platform for the pulsed magnetization characteristic test is designed and constructed. The hysteresis curves of ferrite and Fe-based nanocrystalline cores at high magnetization rates are measured. The simulated and measured hysteresis curves are presented and compared. It is found that the inverse J-A model can be used to describe the magnetization characteristics at high magnetization rates and to separate the static loss and dynamic loss accurately.

Abstract:Built on Weibull cumulative distribution function and the hysteresis rule of Jiles–Atherton model, this paper proposes a new hysteresis function suitable for modeling the hysteretic characteristics. After the domain of definition expanded, the cumulative distribution function of a two-parameter Weibull distribution is employed to describe the skeleton curve of the hysteresis. A simplified energy conversion equation based on Jiles–Atherton model is then presented to describe the loop curve. The proposed hysteresis model is solved by the predictor–corrector method. From calculation results, the model is capable of providing abundant descriptions of hysteresis and approximating some hysteresis with low deviations. Parameter determination method is given based on the principle of minimizing the calculation deviations between the proposed model and Jiles–Atherton model. Then the deviations are comprehensively discussed under wider value range when the magnetic fields are not lower than the specified values. At last, the parametric analysis, mainly the loop parameters on hysteresis curve, maximum value and loop area, is completed. With simpler expression and clearer parameter influence compared with the Jiles–Atherton model, the model is suitable for modeling various types of hysteretic systems, especially the system with a magnetic hysteresis.

Abstract:Magnetic shape memory alloy-based actuator (MSMA-BA) is constructed based on the strain mechanism of MSMA material and the magnetic effect of electric current. It can generate macroscopic deformation with micro-nano scale resolution. However, the rate-dependent and load-dependent hysteresis characteristics in MSMA-BA will reduce the positioning accuracy and hinder its applications. In this study, a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based U model with exogenous inputs is proposed to describe the complex dynamic hysteresis characteristics. Then, an LSTM-based iterative learning control (ILC) scheme is proposed to realize the reference trajectory tracking control of the MSMA-BA. Additionally, a dynamic expansion compression factor (DECF) is introduced in the controller to accelerate the convergence speed of system. The convergence of the proposed LSTM-based ILC scheme is analyzed with the consideration of state uncertainty, output disturbance, and the initial state error. It will promote the further applications of ILC in practical situations. Experiments are carried out on MSMA-BA to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results indicate that the proposed modeling and control methods exhibit excellent performance.
