Abstract:Muscle synergy analysis investigates the neurophysiological mechanisms that the central nervous system employs to coordinate muscles. Several models have been developed to decompose electromyographic (EMG) signals into spatial and temporal synergies. However, using multiple approaches can complicate the interpretation of results. Spatial synergies represent invariant muscle weights modulated with variant temporal coefficients; temporal synergies are invariant temporal profiles that coordinate variant muscle weights. While non-negative matrix factorization allows to extract both spatial and temporal synergies, the comparison between the two approaches was rarely investigated targeting a large set of multi-joint upper-limb movements. Spatial and temporal synergies were extracted from two datasets with proximal (16 subjects, 10M, 6F) and distal upper-limb movements (30 subjects, 21M, 9F), focusing on their differences in reconstruction accuracy and inter-individual variability. We showed the existence of both spatial and temporal structure in the EMG data, comparing synergies with those from a surrogate dataset in which the phases were shuffled preserving the frequency content of the original data. The two models provide a compact characterization of motor coordination at the spatial or temporal level, respectively. However, a lower number of temporal synergies are needed to achieve the same reconstruction R2: spatial and temporal synergies may capture different hierarchical levels of motor control and are dual approaches to the characterization of low-dimensional coordination of the upper-limb. Last, a detailed characterization of the structure of the temporal synergies suggested that they can be related to intermittent control of the movement, allowing high flexibility and dexterity. These results improve neurophysiology understanding in several fields such as motor control, rehabilitation, and prosthetics.

Abstract:Robust classification of natural hand grasp type based on electromyography (EMG) still has some shortcomings in the practical prosthetic hand control, owing to the influence of dynamic arm position changing during hand actions. This study provided a framework for robust hand grasp type classification during dynamic arm position changes, improving both the "hardware" and "algorithm" components. In the hardware aspect, co-located synchronous EMG and force myography (FMG) signals are adopted as the multi-modal strategy. In the algorithm aspect, a sequential decision algorithm is proposed by combining the RNN-based deep learning model with a knowledge-based post-processing model. Experimental results showed that the classification accuracy of multi-modal EMG-FMG signals was increased by more than 10% compared with the EMG-only signal. Moreover, the classification accuracy of the proposed sequential decision algorithm improved the accuracy by more than 4% compared with other baseline models when using both EMG and FMG signals.

Abstract:Extracting muscle synergies from surface electromyographic signals (sEMGs) during exercises has been widely applied to evaluate motor control strategies. This study explores the relationship between upper-limb muscle synergies and the performance of joystick manipulation tasks. Seventy-seven subjects, divided into three classes according to their maneuvering experience, were recruited to perform the left and right reciprocation of the joystick. Based on the motion encoder data, their manipulation performance was evaluated by the mean error, standard deviation, and extreme range of position of the joystick. Meanwhile, sEMG and acceleration signals from the upper limbs corresponding to the entire trial were collected. Muscle synergies were extracted from each subject’s sEMG data by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), based on which the synergy coordination index (SCI), which indicates the size of the synergy space and the variability of the center of activity (CoA), evaluated the temporal activation variability. The synergy pattern space and CoA of all participants were calculated within each class to analyze the correlation between the variability of muscle synergies and the manipulation performance metrics. The correlation level of each class was further compared. The experimental results evidenced a positive correlation between manipulation performance and maneuvering experience. Similar muscle synergy patterns were reflected between the three classes and the structure of the muscle synergies showed stability. In the class of rich maneuvering experience, the correlation between manipulation performance metrics and muscle synergy is more significant than in the classes of trainees and newbies, suggesting that long-term training and practicing can improve manipulation performance, stability of synergy compositions, and temporal activation variability but not alter the structure of muscle synergies determined by a specific task. Our approaches and findings could be applied to 1) reduce manipulation errors, 2) assist maneuvering training and evaluation to enhance transportation safety, and 3) design technical support for sports.
Arm muscle synergies enhance hand posture prediction in combination with forearm muscle synergies

Abstract:Objective. We analyse and interpret arm and forearm muscle activity in relation with the kinematics of hand pre-shaping during reaching and grasping from the perspective of human synergistic motor control. Approach. Ten subjects performed 6 tasks involving reaching, grasping and object manipulation. We recorded electromyographic (EMG) signals from arm and forearm muscles with a mix of bipolar electrodes and high-density (HD) grids of electrodes. Motion capture was concurrently recorded to estimate hand kinematics. Muscle synergies were extracted separately for arm and forearm muscles, and postural synergies were extracted from hand joint angles. We assessed whether activation coefficients of postural synergies positively correlate with and can be regressed from activation coefficients of muscle synergies. Each type of synergies was clustered across subjects. Main results. We found consistency of the identified synergies across subjects, and we functionally evaluated synergy clusters computed across subjects to identify synergies representative of all subjects. We found a positive correlation between pairs of activation coefficients of muscle and postural synergies with important functional implications. We demonstrated a significant positive contribution in the combination between arm and forearm muscle synergies in estimating hand postural synergies with respect to estimation based on muscle synergies of only one body segment, either arm or forearm (p<0.01). We found that dimensionality reduction of multi-muscle EMG RMS signals did not significantly affect hand posture estimation, as demonstrated by comparable results with regression of hand angles from EMG RMS signals. Significance. We demonstrated that hand posture prediction improves by combining activity of arm and forearm muscles and we evaluate, for the first time, correlation and regression between activation coefficients of arm muscle and hand postural synergies. Our findings can be beneficial for myoelectric control of hand prosthesis and upper-limb exoskeletons, and for biomarker evaluation during neurorehabilitation.

Abstract:Muscle synergies as functional low-dimensional building blocks of the neuromotor system regulate the activation patterns of muscle groups in a modular structure during locomotion. The purpose of the current study was to explore how older adults organize locomotor muscle synergies to counteract unpredictable and predictable gait perturbations during the perturbed and the recovery steps. Sixty-three healthy older adults (71.2 ± 5.2 years) participated in the study. Mediolateral and anteroposterior unpredictable and predictable perturbations during walking were introduced using a treadmill. Muscle synergies were extracted from the electromyographic activity of 13 lower limb muscles using Gaussian non-negative matrix factorization. The four basic synergies responsible for unperturbed walking (weight acceptance, propulsion, early swing and late swing) were preserved in all applied gait perturbations, yet their temporal recruitment and muscle contribution in each synergy were modified (p<0.05). These modifications were observed up to four recovery steps and were more pronounced (p<0.05) following unpredictable perturbations. The recruitment of the four basic walking synergies in the perturbed and recovery gait cycles indicates a robust neuromotor control of locomotion by using activation patterns of a few and well-known muscle synergies with specific adjustments within the synergies. The selection of pre-existing muscle synergies while adjusting the time of their recruitment during challenging locomotor conditions may facilitate the effectiveness to deal with perturbations and promote the transfer of adaptation between different kinds of perturbations.

On-line Synergy Identification for Personalized Active Arm Prosthesis: a Feasibility Study

Abstract:The number of degrees of freedom in prosthetic devices today is greater than the number of available electromyographic signals from the residual limb. This potentially causes complex and unintuitive interfaces, which in turn have been cited as a leading cause of prosthetic device abandonment. Synergistic arm prosthesis control allows for an intuitive way to provide additional information to command the motion of the prosthesis by coordinating the motion relationship between the prosthesis and the residual limb. There is a challenge in identifying effective synergies, especially as the motion of an amputee generally differs from the synergy of the typical ablebodied subjects, from person to person, and along the time of prosthesis usage. In this paper, a framework for on-line data driven optimization is proposed to identify the optimal synergy setting for an individual performing a specific task, formulated as an optimization problem based on human motor control. This is done through the characterization of the task by a cost function and the parametrization of the synergy. The proposed framework is able to characterize and identify the synergy of the task of reaching for a given location, with a healthy subject in the loop. The framework is used to drive the motion of an elbow prosthesis using its synergy with the residual shoulder movement of the human subject as input. A simple parametrization for the synergy is used in this paper to demonstrate the idea of the proposed framework. Human-in-the-loop simulation results are presented, showing the feasibility of data driven optimization for on-line synergy identification in the context of an arm prosthesis.
Electromyogram synergy control of a dexterous artificial hand to unscrew and screw objects

Abstract:Abstract Background Due to their limited dexterity, it is currently not possible to use a commercially available prosthetic hand to unscrew or screw objects without using elbow and shoulder movements. For these tasks, prosthetic hands function like a wrench, which is unnatural and limits their use in tight working environments. Results from timed rotational tasks with human subjects demonstrate the clinical need for increased dexterity of prosthetic hands, and a clinically viable solution to this problem is presented for an anthropomorphic artificial hand. Methods Initially, a human hand motion analysis was performed during a rotational task. From these data, human hand synergies were derived and mapped to an anthropomorphic artificial hand. The synergy for the artificial hand is controlled using conventional dual site electromyogram (EMG) signals. These EMG signals were mapped to the developed synergy to control four joints of the dexterous artificial hand simultaneously. Five limb absent and ten able-bodied test subjects participated in a comparison study to complete a timed rotational task as quickly as possible with their natural hands (except for one subject with a bilateral hand absence), eight commercially available prosthetic hands, and the proposed synergy controller. Each test subject used two to four different artificial hands. Results With the able-bodied subjects, the developed synergy controller reduced task completion time by 177% on average. The limb absent subjects completed the task faster on average than with their own prostheses by 46%. There was a statistically significant improvement in task completion time with the synergy controller for three of the four limb absent participants with integrated prostheses, and was not statistically different for the fourth. Conclusions The proposed synergy controller reduced average task completion time compared to commercially available prostheses. Additionally, the synergy controller is able to function in a small workspace and requires less physical effort since arm movements are not required. The synergy controller is driven by conventional dual site EMG signals that are commonly used for prosthetic hand control, offering a viable solution for people with an upper limb absence to use a more dexterous artificial hand to screw or unscrew objects.

Abstract:In myo-control, for computational and setup constraints, the measurement of a high number of muscles is not always possible: the choice of the muscle set to use in a myo-control strategy depends on the desired application scope and a search for a reduced muscle set, tailored to the application, has never been performed. The identification of such set would involve finding the minimum set of muscles whose difference in terms of intention detection performance is not statistically significant when compared to the original set. Also, given the intrinsic sensitivity of muscle synergies to variations of EMG signals matrix, the reduced set should not alter synergies that come from the initial input, since they provide physiological information on motor coordination. The advantages of such reduced set, in a rehabilitation context, would be the reduction of the inputs processing time, the reduction of the setup bulk and a higher sensitivity to synergy changes after training, which can eventually lead to modifications of the ongoing therapy. In this work, the existence of a minimum muscle set, called optimal set, for an upper-limb myoelectric application, that preserves performance of motor activity prediction and the physiological meaning of synergies, has been investigated. Analyzing isometric contractions during planar reaching tasks, two types of optimal muscle sets were examined: a subject-specific one and a global one. The former relies on the subject-specific movement strategy, the latter is composed by the most recurrent muscles among subjects specific optimal sets and shared by all the subjects. Results confirmed that the muscle set can be reduced to achieve comparable hand force estimation performances. Moreover, two types of muscle synergies namely “ Pose-Shared” (extracted from a single multi-arm-poses dataset) and “ Pose-Related” (clustering pose-specific synergies), extracted from the global optimal muscle set, have shown a significant similarity with full-set related ones meaning a high consistency of the motor primitives. Pearson correlation coefficients assessed the similarity of each synergy. The discovering of dominant muscles by means of the optimization of both muscle set size and force estimation error may reveal a clue on the link between synergistic patterns and the force task.

When 90% of the variance is not enough: residual EMG from muscle synergy extraction influences task performance

Abstract:Muscle synergies are usually identified via dimensionality reduction techniques, such that the identified synergies reconstruct the muscle activity to an accuracy level defined heuristically, often set to 90% of the variance. Here, we question the assumption that the residual muscle activity not explained by the synergies is due to noise. We hypothesize instead that the residual activity is not entirely random and can influence the execution of motor tasks. Young healthy subjects performed an isometric reaching task in which the surface electromyography of 10 arm muscles was mapped onto a two-dimensional force used to control a cursor. Three to five synergies explained 90% of the variance in muscle activity. We altered the muscle-force mapping via "hard" and "easy" virtual surgeries. Whereas in both surgeries the forces associated with synergies spanned the same dimension of the virtual environment, the muscle-force mapping was as close as possible to the initial mapping in the easy surgery; in contrast, it was as far as possible in the hard surgery. This design maximized potential differences in reaching errors attributable to residual activity. Results show that the easy surgery produced smaller directional errors than the hard surgery. Additionally, simulations of surgeries constructed with 1 to 10 synergies show that the errors in the easy and hard surgeries differ significantly for up to 8 synergies, which explains 98% of the variance on average. Our study thus indicates the need for cautious interpretations of results derived from synergy extraction techniques based on heuristics with lenient accuracy levels.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The muscle synergy hypothesis posits that the central nervous system simplifies motor control by grouping muscles into modules. Current techniques use dimensionality reduction, such that the identified synergies reconstruct 90% of the muscle activity. We show that residual muscle activity following such identification can have a large systematic effect on movements, even when the number of synergies approaches the number of muscles. Current synergy extraction techniques must therefore be updated to identify true physiological synergies.
Action interference in simultaneous and proportional myocontrol: comparing force- and electromyography

Abstract:Myocontrol, that is, control of a prosthesis via muscle signals, is still a surprisingly hard problem. Recent research indicates that surface electromyography (sEMG), the traditional technique used to detect a subject's intent, could proficiently be replaced, or conjoined with, other techniques (multi-modal myocontrol), with the aim to improve both on dexterity and reliability. Objective. In this paper we present an online assessment of multi-modal sEMG and force myography (FMG) targeted at hand and wrist myocontrol. Approach. Twenty sEMG and FMG sensors in total were used to enforce simultaneous and proportional control of hand opening/closing, wrist pronation/supination and wrist flexion/extension of 12 intact subjects. Main results and Significance. We found that FMG yields in general a better performance than sEMG, and that the main drawback of the sEMG array we used is not the inability to perform a desired action, but rather action interference, that is, the undesired concurrent activation of another action. FMG, on the other hand, causes less interference.
Motor unit-based synergies in a non-compartmentalized muscle

Abstract:The concept of synergies has been used to address the grouping of motor elements contributing to a task with the covariation of these elements reflecting task stability. This concept has recently been extended to groups of motor units with parallel scaling of the firing frequencies with possible contributions of intermittent recruitment (MU-modes) in compartmentalized flexor and extensor muscles of the forearm stabilizing force magnitude in finger pressing tasks. Here, we directly test for the presence and behavior of MU-modes in the tibialis anterior, a non-compartmentalized muscle. Ten participants performed an isometric cyclical dorsiflexion force production task at 1 Hz between 20 and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction and electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from two high-density wireless sensors placed on the skin over the right tibialis anterior. EMG data were decomposed into individual motor unit frequencies and resolved into sets of MU-modes. Inter-cycle analysis of MU-mode magnitudes within the framework of the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) hypothesis was used to quantify force-stabilizing synergies. Two or three MU-modes were identified in all participants and trials accounting, on average, for 69% of variance and were robust to cross-validation measurements. Strong dorsiflexion force-stabilizing synergies in the space of MU-modes were present in all participants and for both electrode locations as reflected in variance within the UCM (median 954, IQR 511-1924) exceeding variance orthogonal to the UCM (median 5.82, IQR 2.9-17.4) by two orders of magnitude. In contrast, MU-mode-stabilizing synergies in the space of motor unit frequencies were not present. This study offers strong evidence for the existence of synergic control mechanisms at the level of motor units independent of muscle compartmentalization, likely organized within spinal cord circuitry.
Intramuscle Synergies: Their Place in the Neural Control Hierarchy

Abstract:We accept a definition of synergy introduced by Nikolai Bernstein and develop it for various actions, from those involving the whole body to those involving a single muscle. Furthermore, we use two major theoretical developments in the field of motor control-the idea of hierarchical control with spatial referent coordinates and the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis-to discuss recent studies of synergies within spaces of individual motor units (MUs) recorded within a single muscle. During the accurate finger force production tasks, MUs within hand extrinsic muscles form robust groups, with parallel scaling of the firing frequencies. The loading factors at individual MUs within each of the two main groups link them to the reciprocal and coactivation commands. Furthermore, groups are recruited in a task-specific way with gains that covary to stabilize muscle force. Such force-stabilizing synergies are seen in MUs recorded in the agonist and antagonist muscles but not in the spaces of MUs combined over the two muscles. These observations reflect inherent trade-offs between synergies at different levels of a control hierarchy. MU-based synergies do not show effects of hand dominance, whereas such effects are seen in multifinger synergies. Involuntary, reflex-based, force changes are stabilized by intramuscle synergies but not by multifinger synergies. These observations suggest that multifinger (multimuscle synergies) are based primarily on supraspinal circuitry, whereas intramuscle synergies reflect spinal circuitry. Studies of intra- and multimuscle synergies promise a powerful tool for exploring changes in spinal and supraspinal circuitry across patient populations.
Task-space Synergies for Reaching using Upper-limb Prostheses

Abstract:Synergistic prostheses enable the coordinated movement of the human-prosthetic arm, as required by activities of daily living. This is achieved by coupling the motion of the prosthesis to the human command, such as the residual limb movement in motion-based interfaces. Previous studies demonstrated that developing human-prosthetic synergies in joint-space must consider individual motor behaviour and the intended task to be performed, requiring personalisation and task calibration. In this work, an alternative synergy-based strategy, utilising a synergistic relationship expressed in task-space, is proposed. This task-space synergy has the potential to replace the need for personalisation and task calibration with a model-based approach requiring knowledge of the individual user's arm kinematics, the anticipated hand motion during the task and voluntary information from the prosthetic user. The proposed method is compared with surface electromyography-based and joint-space synergy-based prosthetic interfaces in a study of motor behaviour and task performance on able-bodied subjects using a VR-based transhumeral prosthesis. Experimental results showed that for a set of forward reaching tasks the proposed task-space synergy achieves comparable performance to joint-space synergies without the need to rely on time-consuming calibration processes or human motor learning. Case study results with an amputee subject motivate the further development of the proposed task-space synergy method.

Muscle synergies for multidirectional isometric force generation during maintenance of upright standing posture

Abstract:Muscle synergies are defined as coordinated recruitment of groups of muscles with specific activation balances and time profiles aimed at generating task-specific motor commands. While muscle synergies in postural control have been investigated primarily in reactive balance conditions, the neuromechanical contribution of muscle synergies during voluntary control of upright standing is still unclear. In this study, muscle synergies were investigated during the generation of isometric force at the trunk during the maintenance of standing posture. Participants were asked to maintain the steady-state upright standing posture while pulling forces of different magnitudes were applied at the level at the waist in eight horizontal directions. Muscle synergies were extracted by nonnegative matrix factorization from sixteen lower limb and trunk muscles. An average of 5-6 muscle synergies were sufficient to account for a wide variety of EMG waveforms associated with changes in the magnitude and direction of pulling forces. A cluster analysis partitioned the muscle synergies of the participants into a large group of clusters according to their similarity, indicating the use of a subjective combination of muscles to generate a multidirectional force vector in standing. Furthermore, we found a participant-specific distribution in the values of cosine directional tuning parameters of synergy amplitude coefficients, suggesting the existence of individual neuromechanical strategies to stabilize the whole-body posture. Our findings provide a starting point for the development of novel diagnostic tools to assess muscle coordination in postural control and lay the foundation for potential applications of muscle synergies in rehabilitation.

Abstract:Precise control of strength is of significant importance in upper limb functional rehabilitation. Understanding the neuro-muscular response in strength regulation can help optimize the rehabilitation prescriptions and facilitate the relative training process for recovery control. This study aimed to investigate the inherent characteristics of neural-muscular activity during dynamic hand strength adjustment. Four dynamic grip force tracking modes were set by manipulating different magnitude and speed of force variations, and thirteen healthy young individuals took participation in the experiment. Electroencephalography were recorded in the contralateral sensorimotor cortex area, as well as the electromyography from the first dorsal interosseous muscle were collected synchronously. The metrics of the Event-related desynchronization, the electromyography stability index, and the force variation, were used to represent the corresponding cortical neural responses, muscle contraction activities, and the level of strength regulation, respectively; and further neuro-muscular coupling between the sensorimotor cortex and the first dorsal interosseous muscle was investigated by transfer entropy analysis. The results indicated a strong relationship that the increase of force regulation demand would result in a force variation increase as well as a stability reduction in muscle motor unit output. Meanwhile, the intensity of neural response increased in both the α and β frequency bands. As the force regulation demand increased, the strength of bidirectional transfer entropy showed a clear shift from β to the γ frequency band, which facilitate rapid integration of dynamic strength compensation to adapt to motor task changes.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate how the central nervous system (CNS) organizes postural control synergies when individuals perform a complex catch-and-throw task in a virtual reality (VR) environment. A Robotic Upright Stand Trainer (RobUST) platform, including surface electromyography and kinematics, was used to investigate how the CNS fine-tunes postural synergies with perturbative and assist-as-needed force fields. A control group without assistive forces was recruited to elucidate the effect of force fields on motor performance and postural synergy organization after the perturbation and during the VR reaching task. We found that the application of assistive forces significantly improved reaching and balance control. The group receiving assistive forces displayed four postural control synergies characterized by higher complexity (i.e., greater number of muscles involved). However, control subjects displayed eight synergies that recruited less number of muscles. In conclusion, assistive forces reduce the number of postural synergies while increasing the complexity of muscle module composition.

Abstract:Voluntary movement is hypothesized to rely on a limited number of muscle synergies, the recruitment of which translates task goals into effective muscle activity. In this study, we investigated how to analytically characterize the functional role of different types of muscle synergies in task performance. To this end, we recorded a comprehensive dataset of muscle activity during a variety of whole-body pointing movements. We decomposed the electromyographic (EMG) signals using a space-by-time modularity model which encompasses the main types of synergies. We then used a task decoding and information theoretic analysis to probe the role of each synergy by mapping it to specific task features. We found that the temporal and spatial aspects of the movements were encoded by different temporal and spatial muscle synergies, respectively, consistent with the intuition that there should a correspondence between major attributes of movement and major features of synergies. This approach led to the development of a novel computational method for comparing muscle synergies from different participants according to their functional role. This functional similarity analysis yielded a small set of temporal and spatial synergies that describes the main features of whole-body reaching movements.

Abstract:The features of the spatial-temporal structuring of intermuscular interaction during locomotion in conditions of full and partial unloading of body weight were studied. The extraction of muscle synergies was performed using the principal component analysis. It is established that the stability of muscle modules and stereotypical patterns of their temporary activation with varying degrees of afferentation are due to the implementation of motor synergy programs. It was revealed that only the presence, but not the power of the afferent flow from the receptor complex of the lower extremities makes a significant contribution to the formation of inter-extremity synergetic patterns and regulation of the degree of involvement of muscles in synergy. The formation of various time profiles in the structure of synergies is due to the redundancy of the organization of control structures, thanks to which reliable management of physiological functions is carried out. The implementation of synergy programs weakly depends on the magnitude and nature of proprioceptive and supportive afferentation. Only the presence, but not the power, of the afferent flow from the receptor complex of the lower extremities makes a significant contribution to the formation of interfacial synergetic patterns and the regulation of the degree of muscle involvement in synergy.

Abstract:Introduction: Muscle synergy is regarded as a motor control strategy deployed by the central nervous system (CNS). Clarifying the modulation of muscle synergies under different strength training modes is important for the rehabilitation of motor-impaired patients. Methods: To represent the subtle variation of neuromuscular activities from the smaller forearm muscles during wrist motion, we proposed to apply muscle synergy analysis to preprocessed high-density electromyographic data (HDEMG). Here, modulation of muscle synergies within and across the isometric and isotonic training modes for strengthening muscles across the wrist were investigated. Surface HDEMGs were recorded from healthy subjects ( N = 10). Three different HDEMG electrode configurations were used for comparison and validation of the extracted muscle synergies. The cosine of principal angles (CPA) and the Euclidian distance (ED) between synergy vectors were used to evaluate the intra- and inter-mode similarity of muscle synergies. Then, how the activation coefficients modulate the excitation of specific synergy under each mode was examined by pattern recognition. Next, for a closer look at the mode-specific synergies and the synergies shared by the two training modes, k -means clustering was applied. Results: We observed high similarity of muscle synergies across different tasks within each training mode, but decreased similarity of muscle synergies across different training modes. Both intra- and intermode similarity of muscle synergies were consistently robust to electrode configurations regardless of the similarity metric used. Discussion: Overall, our findings suggest that applying muscle synergy analysis to HDEMG is feasible, and that the traditional muscle synergies defined by whole-muscle components may be broadened to include sub-muscle components represented by the HDEMG channels. This work may lead to an appropriate neuromuscular analysis method for motor function evaluation in clinical settings and provide valuable insights for the prescription of rehabilitation training therapies.
