Abstract:Background: Power-to-gas is the pivotal link between electricity and gas infrastructure, enabling the broader integration of renewable energy. Yet, enhancements are necessary for its full potential. In the biomethanation process, transferring H2 into the liquid phase is a rate-limiting step. To address this, we developed a novel tubular foam-bed reactor (TFBR) and investigated its performance at laboratory scale. Results: A non-ionic polymeric surfactant (Pluronic® F-68) at 1.5% w/v was added to the TFBR's culture medium to generate a stabilized liquid foam structure. This increased both the gas-liquid surface area and the bubble retention time. Within the tubing, cells predominantly traveled evenly suspended in the liquid phase or were entrapped in the thin liquid film of bubbles flowing inside the tube. Phase (I) of the experiment focused primarily on mesophilic (40 °C) operation of the tubular reactor, followed by phase (II), when Pluronic® F-68 was added. In phase (II), the TFBR exhibited 6.5-fold increase in biomethane production rate (MPR) to 15.1 ( L CH 4 /L R /d) , with a CH4 concentration exceeding 90% (grid quality), suggesting improved H2 transfer. Transitioning to phase (III) with continuous operation at 55 °C, the MPR reached 29.7 L CH 4 /L R /d while maintaining the grid quality CH4. Despite, reduced gas-liquid solubility and gas-liquid mass transfer at higher temperatures, the twofold increase in MPR compared to phase (II) might be attributed to other factors, i.e., higher metabolic activity of the methanogenic archaea. To assess process robustness for phase (II) conditions, a partial H2 feeding regime (12 h 100% and 12 h 10% of the nominal feeding rate) was implemented. Results demonstrated a resilient MPR of approximately 14.8 L CH 4 /L R /d even with intermittent, low H2 concentration. Conclusions: Overall, the TFBR's performance plant sets the course for an accelerated introduction of biomethanation technology for the storage of volatile renewable energy. Robust process performance, even under H2 starvation, underscores its reliability. Further steps towards an optimum operation regime and scale-up should be initiated. Additionally, the use of TFBR systems should be considered for biotechnological processes in which gas-liquid mass transfer is a limiting factor for achieving higher reaction rates.
Bioaugmentation by enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens into trickle bed reactors for H2/CO2 conversion

Abstract:Biomethanation represents a promising approach for biomethane production, with biofilm-based processes like trickle bed reactors (TBRs) being among the most efficient solutions. However, maintaining stable performance can be challenging, and both pure and mixed culture approaches have been applied to address this. In this study, inocula enriched with hydrogenotrophic methanogens were introduced to to TBRs as bioaugmentation strategy to assess their impacts on the process performance and microbial community dynamics. Metagenomic analysis revealed a metagenome-assembled genome belonging to the hydrogenotrophic genus Methanobacterium, which became dominant during enrichment and successfully colonized the TBR biofilm after bioaugmentation. The TBRs achieved a biogas production with > 96 % methane. The bioaugmented reactor consumed additional H2. This may be due to microbial species utilizing CO2 and H2 via various CO2 reduction pathways. Overall, implementing bioaugmentation in TBRs showed potential for establishing targeted species, although challenges remain in managing H2 consumption and optimizing microbial interactions.
Optimization of the Ex Situ Biomethanation of Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide in a Novel Meandering Plug Flow Reactor: Start-Up Phase and Flexible Operation

Abstract:With the increasing use of renewable energy resources for the power grid, the need for long-term storage technologies, such as power-to-gas systems, is growing. Biomethanation provides the opportunity to store energy in the form of the natural gas-equivalent biomethane. This study investigates a novel plug flow reactor that employs a helical static mixer for the biological methanation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In tests, the reactor achieved an average methane production rate of 2.5 LCH4LR∗d (methane production [LCH4] per liter of reactor volume [LR] per day [d]) with a maximum methane content of 94%. It demonstrated good flexibilization properties, as repeated 12 h downtimes did not negatively impact the process. The genera Methanothermobacter and Methanobacterium were predominant during the initial phase, along with volatile organic acid-producing, hydrogenotrophic, and proteolytic bacteria. The average ratio of volatile organic acid to total inorganic carbon increased to 0.52 ± 0.04, while the pH remained stable at an average of pH 8.1 ± 0.25 from day 32 to 98, spanning stable and flexible operation modes. This study contributes to the development of efficient flexible biological methanation systems for sustainable energy storage and management.
Biological upgrading of biogas assisted with membrane supplied hydrogen gas in a three-phase upflow reactor

Abstract:Biogas upgrading via CO2 conversion to CH4 is an emerging technology for renewable natural gas production and carbon management, but its development is limited by the low H2 gas to liquid phase transfer. Herein, an innovative biogas upgrading system employing a three-phase design was studied for CO2 conversion with H2 supply via gas-permeable membrane. The system produced biogas consisted of 74.1 ± 7.1 % CH4 and 25.9 ± 7.1 % CO2 with intermittent injection of H2. When H2 supply was continuous, the CH4 content increased to 91.6 ± 2.2 % at a H2:CO2 ratio of 4.4. Although a higher ratio of 5.5 could result in a higher CH4 percentage of 95.2 ± 2.5 %, biogas production rate started to decrease. The removal efficiency of organic contents remained above 90 % throughout the experiment. Microbial community analysis corroborated the findings, showing that hydrogenotrophic Methanobacteriaceae was more prevalent in the biofilm (71.9 %) compared to that in anaerobic digestion (15.8 %) and effluent (14.1 %).
Low-Grade Syngas Biomethanation in Continuous Reactors with Respect to Gas–Liquid Mass Transfer and Reactor Start-Up Strategy

Abstract:In order to utilize a wider range of low-grade syngas, the syngas biomethanation was studied in this work with respect to the gas–liquid mass transfer and the reactor start-up strategy. Two reactors, a continuous stirred tank (CSTR) and a bubble column with gas recirculation (BCR-C), were used in the experiment by feeding an artificial syngas of 20% H2, 50% CO, and 30% CO2 into the reactors at 55 °C. The results showed that the CH4 productivity was slightly increased by reducing the gas retention time (GRT), but was significantly improved by increasing the stirring speed in the CSTR and the gas circulation rate in the BCR-C. The best syngas biomethanation performance of the CSTR with a CH4 productivity of 22.20 mmol·Lr−1·day−1 and a yield of 49.01% was achieved at a GRT of 0.833 h and a stirring speed of 300 rpm, while for the BCR-C, the best performance with a CH4 productivity of 61.96 mmol·Lr−1·day−1 and a yield of 87.57% was achieved at a GRT of 0.625 h and a gas circulation rate of 40 L·Lr−1·h−1. The gas–liquid mass transfer capability provided by gas circulation is far superior to mechanical stirring, leading to a much better performance of low-grade syngas biomethanation in the BCR-C. Feeding H2/CO2 during the startup stage of the reactor can effectively stimulate the growth and metabolism of microorganisms, and create a better metabolic environment for subsequent low-grade syngas biomethanation. In addition, during the thermophilic biomethanation of syngas, Methanothermobacter is the dominant genus.

Simultaneous Biogas Upgrading and Valuable Chemical Production Using Homoacetogens in a Membrane Biofilm Reactor

Abstract:Biogas produced from anaerobic digestion usually contains impurities, particularly with a high content of CO2 (15-60%), thus decreasing its caloric value and limiting its application as an energy source. H2-driven biogas upgrading using homoacetogens is a promising approach for upgrading biogas to biomethane and converting CO2 to acetate simultaneously. Herein, we developed a novel membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) with H2 and biogas separately supplied via bubbleless hollow fiber membranes. The gas-permeable hollow fibers of the MBfR enabled high H2 and CO2 utilization efficiencies (∼98% and ∼97%, respectively) and achieved concurrent biomethane (∼94%) and acetate (∼450 mg/L/d) production. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing suggested that enriched microbial communities were dominated by Acetobacterium (38-48% relative abundance). In addition, reverse transcription quantitative PCR of the functional marker gene formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase showed that its expression level increased with increasing H2 and CO2 utilization efficiencies. These results indicate that Acetobacterium plays a key role in CO2 to acetate conversion. These findings are expected to facilitate energy-positive wastewater treatment and contribute to the development of a new solution to biogas upgrading.

Abstract:Biomethanation converts carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into renewable natural gas (RNG) using mixed microbial cultures enriched with hydrogenotrophic archaea. This study examines the performance of a single methanogenic archaeon converting biogas with added hydrogen (H2) into methane (CH4) using a trickle-bed bioreactor with enhanced gas-liquid mass transport. The process in continuous operation followed the theoretical reaction of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis (CO2 + 4 H2 → CH4 + 2 H2O), producing RNG with over 99 % CH4 and more than 0.9 H2 conversion efficiency. The Monod constants of H2 uptake were experimentally determined using kinetic modelling. Also, a dimensionless parameter was used to quantify the ratio between the H2 mass transfer rate and the maximum attainable H2 consumption rate. Single-culture biomethanation averts the formation of secondary metabolites and bicarbonate buffer interferences, resulting in lower demands for H2 than mixed-culture biomethanation.

Abstract:The H-2-assisted biogas upgrading approach has recently attracted much interest as a low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used ex-situ/physiochemical biogas upgrading techniques. However, most studies conducted to date have been limited to anaerobic solid-waste treatment characterized by flocculant sludge and low organic loading rates (OLR). In an attempt to expand its application to high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment, an innovative two-stage up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor system was employed using anaerobic granular sludge. We found that the CH4 content of product gas was consistently > 90% and that H-2 and CO2 concentrations stayed below 5%, even when OLR was increased from 1 to 5 g L-1 d(-1) and H-2 feeding rates were increased from 0.13 to 0.63 g L-1 d(-1). We were also able to show that CO (5-10%) in H-2-rich syngas didn't inhibit methanogenesis or had significant impact on microbial community structure, suggesting that H-2-assisted biogas upgrading with H-2-rich syngas is feasible.
Optimization of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis via phase separation in a two-phase internal circulation reactor for the treatment of high-sulfate organic wastewater

Abstract:To enhance the performance of the internal circulation (IC) reactor when treating high-sulfate organic wastewater, a laboratory-scale two-phase IC reactor with distinct phase separation capabilities was designed, and the sulfate reduction and methanogenesis processes were optimized by segregating the reactor into two specialized reaction zones. The results demonstrated that the first and second reaction areas of the two-phase IC reactor could be maintained at 4.5-6.0 and 7.5-8.5, respectively, turning them into the specialized phase for sulfate reduction and methanogenesis. Through phase separation, the two-phase IC reactor achieved a COD degradation and sulfate reduction efficiency of more than 80% when the influent sulfate concentration exceeded 5,000 mg/L, which were 32.32% and 16.04% higher than that before phase separation. Functional analyses indicated a greater activity of both the dissimilatory and assimilatory sulfate reduction pathways in the acidogenic phase, largely due to a rise in the relative abundance of the genera Desulfovibrio, Bacteroides, and Lacticaseibacillus, the primary carriers of sulfate reduction functional genes. In contrast, all the acetoclastic, hydrogenotrophic, and methylotrophic methanogenesis pathways were inhibited in the acidogenic phase but thrived in the methanogenic phase, coinciding with shifts in the genus Methanothrix, which harbors the mcrA, mcrB, and mcrG genes essential for the final transformation step of all three methanogenesis pathways.
Hollow Fiber Membrane Based H 2 Diffusion for Efficient in Situ Biogas Upgrading in an Anaerobic Reactor

Abstract:Bubbleless gas transfer through a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) module was used to supply H2 to an anaerobic reactor for in situ biogas upgrading, and it creates a novel system that could achieve a CH4 content higher than 90 % in the biogas. The increase of CH4 content and pH, and the decrease of bicarbonate concentration were related with the increase of the H2 flow rate. The CH4 content increased from 78.4 % to 90.2 % with the increase of the H2 flow rate from 930 to 1,440 ml/(l day), while the pH in the reactor remained below 8.0. An even higher CH4 content (96.1 %) was achieved when the H2 flow rate was increased to 1,760 ml/(l day); however, the pH increased to around 8.3 due to bicarbonate consumption which hampered the anaerobic process. The biofilm formed on the HFM was found not to be beneficial for the process since it increased the resistance of H2 diffusion to the liquid. The study also demonstrated that the biofilm formed on the membrane only contributed 22–36 % to the H2 consumption, while most of the H2 was consumed by the microorganisms in the liquid phase.
Diluted methane mitigation by a co-culture of alkaliphilic methanotrophs and the microalgae Scenedesmus obtusiusculus towards carbon neutrality

Abstract:A co-culture of an alkaliphilic methanotrophic consortium and the microalga Scenedesmus obtusiusculus was designed to consume CH 4 and CO 2 from diluted CH 4 streams under alkaline conditions to favor CO 2 retention. The highest CH 4 consumption rate in batch assays was 318 mg CH4 g biomass −1 d −1 with 8% initial CH 4 and nitrate as the nitrogen source. Subsequently, the co-culture was evaluated in a photobioreactor with batch and fed-batch CH 4 feeds. Under continuous illumination, the CH 4 consumption rate reached 258 mg CH4 g biomass −1 d −1 , but the pH increased to 9.8. After a photonic pH control implementation, the pH remained at 9.1 ± 0.05 with a consumption rate of 196 mg CH4 g biomass −1 d −1 . The co-culture exhibited continuous activity, synchronized growth, and long-term stability, effectively removing both gases in a single reactor. Moreover, the co-culture's biomass showed an increase in reserve molecules, including carbohydrates and lipids, with protein as the primary product (40-52% DCW), offering potential as a microbial protein source. The photonic pH control exhibited a rapid response, substituting the traditional acid/alkali addition method, which increases salinity, medium volume, and operational costs. The methanotroph-microalgae co-culture is a successful, robust, and stable alternative for diluted methane mitigation, resulting in nearly zero carbon emissions and valuable biomass production.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of dissolved CO 2 on the selection of metabolic pathway using a methanation membrane bioreactor supplied with H 2 /CO 2 . Various ratios of H 2 /CO 2 were applied (3.3, 3.8, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 (v/v)) to manipulate dissolved CO 2 levels in the medium. The findings revealed a correlation between the concentration of dissolved CO 2 and the production of CH 4 (positive) and acetate (negative). Specifically, at a dissolved concentration of CO 2 above 2.0 ± 0.2 mmol/L, production of CH 4 was favored. At the opposite, acetate production was favored at lower dissolved CO 2 concentrations, with a maximum concentration of 1.9 g/L observed at 0.9 mmol/L of dissolved CO 2 . This study demonstrates that the modification of dissolved CO 2 levels in a methanation bioreactor can provide a strategy for the selection of metabolic pathways and microbial communities, thereby offering a promising opportunity for optimizing the conversion of CO 2 into high-value products such as CH 4 and acetate.

Anaerobic Digestion for Simultaneous Sewage Sludge Treatment and CO Biomethanation: Process Performance and Microbial Ecology

Abstract:Syngas is produced by thermal gasification of both nonrenewable and renewable sources including biomass and coal, and it consists mainly of CO, CO2, and H-2. In this paper we aim to bioconvert CO in the syngas to CH4. A novel technology for simultaneous sewage sludge treatment and CO biomethanation in an anaerobic reactor was presented. Batch experiments showed that CO was inhibitory to methanogens, but not to bacteria, at CO partial pressure between 0.25 and 1 atm under thermophilic conditions. During anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge supplemented with CO added through a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) module in continuous thermophilic reactors, CO did not inhibit the process even at a pressure as high as 1.58 atm inside the HFM, due to the low dissolved CO concentration in the liquid. Complete consumption of CO was achieved with CO gas retention time of 0.2 d. Results from high-throughput sequencing analysis showed clear differences of the microbial community structures between the samples from liquid and biofilm on the HFM in the reactor with CO addition. Species close to Methanosarcina barkeri and Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus were the two main archaeal species involved in CO biomethanation. However, the two species were distributed differently in the liquid phase and in the biofilm. Although the carboxidotrophic activities test showed that CO was converted by both archaea and bacteria, the bacterial species responsible for CO conversion are unknown.
Performance of a hybrid anaerobic-contact oxidation biofilm baffled reactor for the treatment of decentralized molasses wastewater

Abstract:A novel hybrid anaerobic-contact oxidation biofilm baffled reactor (HAOBR) was developed to simultaneously remove nitrogenous and carbonaceous organic pollutants from decentralized molasses wastewater in the study. The study was based on the inoculation of anaerobic granule sludge in anaerobic compartments and the installation of combination filler in aerobic compartments. The performance of reactor system was studied regarding the hydraulic retention time (HRT), microbial characteristics and the gas water ratio (GWR). When the HRT was 24h and the GWR was 20:1, total ammonia and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the effluent were reduced by 99% and 91.8%, respectively. The reactor performed stably for treating decentralized molasses wastewater. The good performance of the reactor can be attributed to the high resistance of COD and hydraulic shock loads. In addition, the high solid retention time of contact oxidation biofilm contributed to stable performance of the reactor.

Power to biogas upgrading: Effects of different H 2 /CO 2 ratios on products and microbial communities in anaerobic fermentation system

Abstract:Two anaerobic reactors with and without Ca 2+ were operated at 35 °C to investigate the effects of different H 2 /CO 2 ratios on products and microbial communities. Through the investigation of various parameters, it was shown that the change of pH triggered by the variations of H 2 /CO 2 is the decisive factor affecting the product selection in anaerobic fermentation system. During the biosynthesis of ATP for cell growth and reproduction, protons (H + ) were pumped from extracellular to intracellular by proton pump, which caused an increase of intrinsic pH of fermentative system. When the pH below 9.5, the methanogenic pathway was more prevalent. While the pH above 10.0 was conducive to the homoacetogenesis. Microbial community analysis showed that with the changes of H 2 /CO 2 ratio, a turnover had occurred. When the ratio of H 2 /CO 2 was 4, the main methanogen was Methanobacterium with the dominant interspecies electron transfer bacteria (IETB) of Thermovirga and DMER64 . The turnover of microbial community occurred when the H 2 /CO 2 ratio was 4.5 and 4.25. The dominant acetogenic microorganisms were norank_o_Clostridia_UCG-014 (homoacetogen) and Natronincola (obligately alkaliphilic acetogen). When the H 2 /CO 2 ratio returned to 4, the dominant methanogens were hydrotropic Methanobacterium and Methanobrevibacter with four interspecies electron transfer bacteria including DMER64 , Thermovirga , Dechlorobacter and Achromobacter .

Abstract:Anaerobic technologies with downstream autotrophic nitrogen removal have been proposed to enhance bioenergy recovery and transform a wastewater treatment plant from an energy consumer to an energy exporter. However, approximately 20-50 % of the produced methane is dissolved in the anaerobically treated effluent and is easily stripped into the atmosphere in the downstream aerobic process, contributing to the release of greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to develop a solution to beneficially utilize dissolved methane to support high-level nitrogen removal from anaerobically treated mainstream wastewater. A novel technology, integrating Partial Nitritation, Anammox and Methane-dependent nitrite/nitrate reduction (i.e. PNAM) was demonstrated in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR). With the feeding of ∼50 mg NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N/L and ∼20 mg/L dissolved methane at a hydraulic retention time of 15 h, around 90 % of nitrogen and ∼100 % of dissolved methane can be removed together in the MABR. Microbial community characterization revealed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), anammox bacteria, nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation microorganisms (n-DAMO bacteria and archaea) and aerobic methanotrophs co-existed in the established biofilm. Batch tests confirmed the active microbial pathways and showed that AOB, anammox bacteria and n-DAMO microbes were jointly responsible for the nitrogen removal, and dissolved methane was mainly removed by the n-DAMO process, with aerobic methane oxidation making a minor contribution. In addition, the established system was robust against dynamic changes in influent composition. The study provides a promising technology for the simultaneous removal of dissolved methane and nitrogen from domestic wastewater, which can support the transformation of wastewater treatment from an energy- and carbon-intensive process, to one that is energy- and carbon-neutral.

Towards Biohythane Production from Biomass: Influence of Operational Stage on Anaerobic Fermentation and Microbial Community

Abstract:Biohythane consisting of biohydrogen and biomethane via two-stage fermentation is a promising energy carrier for vehicle use. In this study, one-stage biomethane system using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and packed bed reactor (PBR) was shifted to the two-stage biohythane system to study the influence of operational stage. Compared with biomethane system, the biohythane process achieved higher COD removal and energy recovery. Particularly, the total COD removal in the PBR system rose significantly from 74.0 to 97.3%, corresponding to an increased energy recovery from 54.2 to 67.1%. The first-stage hydrogen fermentation had a positive effect on subsequent biomethane production in biohythane system. The analysis of microbial diversity using Illumina MiSeq sequencing showed significant changes of microorganisms in biomethane reactor, which revealed the variation of biochemical pathways. Compared to biomethane system, the relative abundance of acidogenesis bacteria was reduced in biohythane system, such as family Clostridiaceae. By contrast, the amount of acetogens (Syntrophaceae, Syntrophomonadaceae and Desulfovibrionaceae) and acetate-oxidizing bacteria (Spirochaetes) was increased. The archaea community remained stable, and mainly consisted of acetoclastic methanogens from family Methanosaetaceae. These results indicated the biomethane reactors in biohythane system had more efficient acidogenesis and acetate-utilizing microbial community.
Enhancement of H2-water Mass Transfer Using Methyl-Modified Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Efficient Microbial CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Inorganic-microbial hybrid catalysis is an emerging technology that uses electrical energy to drive microorganisms to reduce CO2 into high value-added compounds, and it has broad application prospects in CO2 reduction. However, the low current density (production yield) limits its practical application. Hydrogen-mediated inorganic-microbial hybrid catalysis system can achieve higher current density, but it is limited by low H2 mass transfer. Here, silica nanoparticles were used to enhance the hydrogen mass transfer for highly efficient CO2 reduction. Solid silica (SN), mesoporous silica (MSN), hollow mesoporous silica (HMSN), and methyl-modified hollow mesoporous silica (MHMSN) were firstly prepared and tested for the enhancement of hydrogen mass transfer. Of these, MHMSN nanoparticles at a concentration of 0.3 wt% were the best at enhancing gas-liquid mass transfer, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KLa) and saturated dissolved hydrogen concentration of H2 are 0.53 min-1 and 1.81 mg l-1, respectively. Compared with the control group without added nanoparticles, MHMSN significantly increased the solubility and KLa of H2. This can be attributed that the addition of MHMSN promoted the detached process of hydrogen bubbles from the electrode surface, which made the diameter of hydrogen bubbles smaller, increased the gas-liquid mass transfer area, and strengthened the mass transfer process of H2. Furthermore, it was added to the inorganic-microbial hybrid catalysis system to effectively promote the microbial carbon reduction process, achieving a polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) yield of up to 700 mg l-1, and the electron utilization rate and CO2 conversion rate were 51 % and 58 % higher than the control group, respectively. These results demonstrated that the addition of MHMSN is an effective approach to enhancing the performance of H2-mediated inorganic-microbial hybrid catalysis system.

Abstract:A halotolerant consortium between microalgae and methanotrophic bacteria could effectively remediate in situ CH 4 and CO 2 , particularly using saline wastewater sources. Herein, Methylomicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z was demonstrated to form a mutualistic association with Chlorella sp. HS2 at a salinity level above 3.0%. Co-culture significantly enhanced the growth of both microbes, independent of initial inoculum ratios. Additionally, increased methane provision in enclosed serum bottles led to saturated methane removal. Subsequent analyses suggested nearly an order of magnitude increase in the amount of carbon sequestered in biomass in methane-fed co-cultures, conditions that also maintained a suitable cultural pH suitable for methanotrophic growth. Collectively, these results suggest a robust metabolic coupling between the two microbes and the influence of the factors other than gaseous exchange on the assembled consortium. Therefore, multi-faceted investigations are needed to harness the significant methane removal potential of the identified halotolerant consortium under conditions relevant to real-world operation scenarios.

Abstract:Syngas based co-digestion is not only more economically attractive than separate syngas methanation but also able to upgrade biogas and increase overall CH4 amount simultaneously. However, high H2 concentration in the syngas could inhibit syntrophic degradation of propionate, resulting in propionate accumulation and even failure of the co-digestion system. In an attempt to reduce propionate accumulation via enhancing both H2 interspecies transfer (HIT) and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) pathways, layered granule-based biofilms induced by conductive carbon felt particles (CCFP) was employed. The results showed that propionate accumulation was effectively reduced with influent COD load up to 7gL(-1)d(-1). Two types of granule-based biofilms, namely biofilm adhered to CCFP (B-CCFP) and granules formed by self-immobilization (B-SI) were formed in the reactor. Clostridium, Syntrophobacter, Methanospirillum were possibly involved in HIT and Clostridium, Geobacter, Anaerolineaceae, Methanosaeta in DIET, both of which might be responsible for the high-rate propionate degradation.
