Abstract:Rapid socio-economic development has led to many water environmental issues in small watersheds such as non-compliance with water quality standards, complex pollution sources, and difficulties in water environment management. To achieve a quantitative evaluation of water quality, identify pollution sources, and implement refined management in small watersheds, this study collected monthly seven water quality indexes of four monitoring points from 2010 to 2023, and ten water quality indexes of 23 sampling points in the Shiting River and Mianyuan River which are tributaries of the Tuojiang River Basin. Then, water quality evaluation and pollution source analysis were conducted from both temporal and spatial perspectives using the Water Quality Index (WQI) method, the Absolute Principal Component Scores/Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) method, and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor modeling technique. The results indicated that except for total nitrogen (TN), the concentrations of other water quality indexes exhibited a decreasing trend, and all were divided into two obvious stages before and after 2016. Furthermore, the proportion of water quality grade of Good and above increased from 73.96 to 84.94% from 2010–2015 to 2016–2023, and the water quality grade of Good and above from upstream to downstream dropped from 100 to 23.33%. From the temporal scale, four and five pollution sources were identified in the first and second stages, respectively. The distinct TN pollutant is mainly affected by agricultural non-point sources (NPS), whose impact is enhanced from 17.76 to 78.31%. Total phosphorus (TP) was affected by the phosphorus chemical industry, whose contribution gradually weakened from 50.8 to 24.9%. From a spatial perspective, four and five pollution sources were identified in the upstream and downstream, respectively. Therefore, even though there are some limitations due to the data availability of water monitory and hydrology data, the proposed research framework of this study can be applied to the water environmental management of other similar watersheds.

Abstract:Tuojiang River watershed is an economically developed and densely populated area in Sichuan Province (southwest of China), which is also an important tributary of the Yangtze River. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the main pollutants affecting water quality, but there is still lack of study on the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of these two pollutants. In this study, the typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are simulated by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, and the spatial autocorrelation method is used to reveal the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the pollution loads from the annual average and water periods. Combined with redundancy analysis (RDA) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis, the main driving factors affecting the typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are discussed from the global and local perspectives. The results show that (1) from different water periods, the pollution loads of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in three water periods show obviously different, is the highest in the abundant water period, with 323.4 kg/ha and 47.9 kg/ha, followed by the normal water period, with 95.7 kg/ha and 14.1 kg/ha, and the lowest in the dry water period, with 28.4 kg/ha and 4.2 kg/ha. The annual average value of TN pollution load is higher than that of TP, with 447.5 kg/ha and 66.1 kg/ha, respectively; (2) the TN and TP pollution loads are stable on the whole, and the overall level in the middle reaches is higher. The pollution loads of Shifang City and Mianzhu City are higher in all three water periods. (3) Elevation and slope are two main driving factors affecting the TN and TP pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed. Therefore, the visualization and quantification of temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are helpful to provide the basis for scientific prevention and control of pollution in the Tuojiang River watershed and are of great significance to promote the sustainable, coordinated, and healthy development of water environment and economy in the watershed.

Abstract:The increasingly serious river water pollution in developing countries poses great threat to environmental health and human welfare. The assignment of river function to specific uses, known as zoning, is a useful tool to reveal variations of water environmental adaptability to human impact. Therefore, characterizing the temporal trend and identifying responsible pollution sources in different functional zones could greatly improve our knowledge about human impacts on the river water environment. The aim of this study is to obtain a deeper understanding of temporal trends and sources of water pollution in different functional zones with a case study of the Qiantang River, China. Measurement data were obtained and pretreated for 13 variables from 41 monitoring sites in four categories of functional zones during the period 1996–2004. An exploratory approach, which combines smoothing and non-parametric statistical tests, was applied to characterize trends of four significant parameters (permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, total cadmium and fluoride) accounting for differences among different functional zones identified by discriminant analysis. Aided by GIS, yearly pollution index (PI) for each monitoring site was further mapped to compare the within-group variations in temporal dynamics for different functional zones. Rotated principal component analysis and receptor model (absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression, APCS-MLR) revealed that potential pollution sources and their corresponding contributions varied among the four functional zones. Variations of APCS values for each site of one functional zone as well as their annual average values highlighted the uncertainties associated with cross space-time effects in source apportionment. All these results reinforce the notion that the concept of zoning should be taken seriously in water pollution control. Being applicable to other rivers, the framework of management-oriented source apportionment is thus believed to have potentials to offer new insights into water management and advance the source apportionment framework as an operational basis for national and local governments.

Abstract:and L180M are compensatory mutations that increase the fitness of hepatitis B viruses harbouring mutations in the YMDD domain of the viral polymerase. It is of interest that while the YMDD domain mutation M204V was present as a minority species at baseline, V173L and L180M co-existed with the wild type as a mixed sequence in these two positions. While it is known that entecavir does not select lamivudine-associated mutations de novo, it is clear from this patient that pre-existing mutations were selected rapidly and resulted in virological rebound. Failure of entecavir was said to be rare and to occur only after 1–2 years of therapy. Hence, this is a case of early virological hepatitis B rebound on entecavir, through selection of lamivudine-associated mutations, but without developing any further entecavir-associated mutations in a treatment-naive patient. We feel it is essential to perform baseline resistance profiling on all patients started on entecavir even if treatment naive. The sequence tracing also needs to be carefully scrutinized as the mutations may appear as a minority species not obviously visible on population sequencing analysis.
Non-point Source Pollution Loadings in Xitiaoxi Watershed of Anji County,Zhejiang Province,China

Abstract:Nonpoint source pollution has been a major contributor to water pollution in rivers,lakes,and reservoirs of China in recent years.Xitiaoxi waterhed,which is located in the upstream of Taihu watershed,is an important water source for local community.To explore the current status of nonpoint source pollution in Xitiaoxi watershed of Anji County,Zhejiang Province in 2007,the export coefficient method and geographic information system(GIS)were used to estimate the export of nonpoint source pollution loadings and to analyse the spatial distribution of nonpoint source pollution loadings,respectively.The results showed that the total export of chemical oxygen demand(COD),total nitrogen(TN),total phosphorus(TP),ammonia nitrogen(NH 3-N)was 2 236.12 t,1 007.22 t,78.11 t,82.90 t,respectively,accounting for 71.91%,70.05%,83.52%,23.64% of the total amount of pollutants in Xitiaoxi watershed.Moreover,it was found that rural sewage,agricultural and forest lands and rural industrial wastewater were main sources of COD,while agricultural and forest lands was the largest contributor to TN.Most of TP was contributed by rural garbage,livestock and poultry and agricultural and forest lands,and NH 3-N mostly came from livestock and poultry and rural industrial wastewater.Spatially,the nonpoint source pollution loadings were mainly concentrated in midstream and downstream areas of Xitiaoxi watershed.The exports of nutrients such as COD and TP and NH 3-N increased contantly from upstream to downstream areas while TN had similar exports.These results were supposed to provide scientific decision-making basis for the management of water quality of Xitiaoxi watershed.

Abstract:Characterizing the spatio-temporal patterns and apportioning the pollution sources of water bodies are important for the management and protection of water resources. The main objective of this study is to describe the dynamics of water quality and provide references for improving river pollution control practices. Comprehensive application of neural-based modeling and different multivariate methods was used to evaluate the spatio-temporal patterns and source apportionment of pollution in Qiantang River, China. Measurement data were obtained and pretreated for 13 variables from 41 monitoring sites for the period of 2001–2004. A self-organizing map classified the 41 monitoring sites into three groups (Group A, B and C), representing different pollution characteristics. Four significant parameters (dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus and total lead) were identified by discriminant analysis for distinguishing variations of different years, with about 80% correct assignment for temporal variation. Rotated principal component analysis (PCA) identified four potential pollution sources for Group A (domestic sewage and agricultural pollution, industrial wastewater pollution, mineral weathering, vehicle exhaust and sand mining), five for Group B (heavy metal pollution, agricultural runoff, vehicle exhaust and sand mining, mineral weathering, chemical plants discharge) and another five for Group C (vehicle exhaust and sand mining, chemical plants discharge, soil weathering, biochemical pollution, mineral weathering). The identified potential pollution sources explained 75.6% of the total variances for Group A, 75.0% for Group B and 80.0% for Group C, respectively. Receptor-based source apportionment was applied to further estimate source contributions for each pollution variable in the three groups, which facilitated and supported the PCA results. These results could assist managers to develop optimal strategies and determine priorities for river pollution control and effective water resources management.

Abstract:In a systematic prospective study the levels of mature polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), unsegmented band cells, platelets and fibrinogen were measured during the first 5 days of life. 240 neonates of less than 2 days of age admitted to an intensive care unit were compared with 173 normal infants ("control" group) and 15 infected babies ("infected" group). The changes of PMN with gestational age and during the early days of postnatal life were determined by statistical analysis of the results in the "control" group. The results of the "infected" group demonstrated the change of PMN and unsegmented cells from the day of infection. This data should be used to interpret the levels of PMN, unsegmented band cells and together with the abnormalities in the platelets and plasma fibrinogen levels underlines the value of haemotological tests in the early diagnosis of foetomaternal infections.

Abstract:Effective management of large basins necessitates pinpointing the spatial and temporal drivers of primary index exceedances and urban risk factors, offering crucial insights for basin administrators. Yet, comprehensive examinations of multiple pollutants within the Yangtze River Basin remain scarce. Here we introduce a pollution inventory for urban clusters surrounding the Yangtze River Basin, analyzing water quality data from 102 cities during 2018-2019. We assessed the exceedance rates for six pivotal indicators: dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH<sub>3</sub>-N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total phosphorus (TP), and the permanganate index (COD<sub>Mn</sub>) for each city. Employing random forest regression and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analyses, we identified the spatiotemporal factors influencing these key indicators. Our results highlight agricultural activities as the primary contributors to the exceedance of all six indicators, thus pinpointing them as the leading pollution source in the basin. Additionally, forest coverage, livestock farming, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, along with meteorological elements like precipitation and temperature, significantly impacted various indicators' exceedances. Furthermore, we delineate five core urban risk components through principal component analysis, which are (1) anthropogenic and industrial activities, (2) agricultural practices and forest extent, (3) climatic variables, (4) livestock rearing, and (5) principal polluting sectors. The cities were subsequently evaluated and categorized based on these risk components, incorporating policy interventions and administrative performance within each region. The comprehensive analysis advocates for a customized strategy in addressing the discerned risk factors, especially for cities presenting elevated risk levels.

Abstract:Although multiple pollution sources could discharge significant nutrient loads within a river basin, few studies have attempted to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of nutrient pollution source compositions across a basin. Using the Xiaohong River Basin as a case example, this study aims to establish a feasible framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal patterns of regional pollution source compositions that could be implemented in watersheds worldwide. Firstly, SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used to simulate nutrient loads from all main human activities in the basin. Driven by hourly rainfall, the SWAT model was able to simulate both monthly total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) loads in the basin satisfactorily. Source attribution of TN and TP loads through SWAT scenario analysis combined with the kappa-means clustering analysis was then used to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution patterns in the nutrient pollution source compositions. A total of six types of TN pollution source compositions and five types of TP pollution source compositions have been identified across the region. In general, crop production dominated TN load contributions in 24 sub-basins along the main reach and upstream tributaries, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) joined crop production as the leading source in eight sub-basins, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and industry contributed significant TN loads in the remaining three sub-basins. For TP, crop production dominated load contributions in six sub-basins along the upstream tributaries, CAFOs and crop production dominated in 28 sub-basins, while WWTPs were the leading source in the remaining sub-basin. Therefore, implementing effective programs to promote the utilization of organic fertilizers from animal manure for crop production is essential to alleviate the serious nutrient pollution situation in the basin.
Identifying the Spatial Risk Patterns of Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution in a Basin of the Upper Yangtze River

Abstract:Agricultural non-point source pollution (ANPSP) is a primary cause of watershed water quality deterioration, and over 50% of NPS pollutants are estimated to come from ANPSP. Based on the “source-sink” theory and minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model, ANPSP source and key resistance factors were integrated to identify areas at risk of ANPSP production and transportation into the waters of the upper Yangtze River basin. The results showed a spatial difference in the agricultural pollution sources of the basin, which were determined using both ANPSP loads and land-use types. Soil type, rainfall erosivity, and elevation were the three most important resistance factors in pollution transportation, weighting 0.373, 0.241, and 0.147, respectively. There was a spatial effect on the comprehensive resistance of ANPSP transportation, which was lower in mountainous terrain at the central basin. On the coupling of source and resistance processes, regions at serious risk of ANPSP were found to be concentrated in the southwest area. Areas at very high risk of NH3-N and TP pollution accounted for 37.6% and 38.1%, respectively, in the total town/street area. The spatial risk patterns identified in this study could be used for decision making and policy regulation of ANPSP and for aquatic environmental protection.

Abstract:Excessive nitrogen (N) discharge from agriculture causes widespread problems in aquatic ecosystems. Knowledge of spatiotemporal patterns and source attribution of N pollution is critical for nutrient management programs but is poorly studied in headwaters with various small water bodies and mini-point pollution sources. Taking a typical small watershed in the low mountains of Southeastern China as an example, N pollution and source attribution were studied for a multipond system around a village using the Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) model. The results exhibited distinctive spatio-seasonal variations with an overall seriousness rank for the three indicators: total nitrogen (TN) > nitrate/nitrite nitrogen (NOx−-N) > ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), according to the Chinese Surface Water Quality Standard. TN pollution was severe for the entire watershed, while NOx−-N pollution was significant for ponds and ditches far from the village, and the NH3-N concentrations were acceptable except for the ponds near the village in summer. Although food and cash crop production accounted for the largest source of N loads, we discovered that mini-point pollution sources, including animal feeding operations, rural residential sewage, and waste, together contributed as high as 47% of the TN and NH3-N loads in ponds and ditches. So, apart from eco-fertilizer programs and concentrated animal feeding operations, the importance of environmental awareness building for resource management is highlighted for small farmers in headwater agricultural watersheds. As a first attempt to incorporate multipond systems into the process-based modeling of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, this work can inform other hydro-environmental studies on scattered and small water bodies. The results are also useful to water quality improvement for entire river basins.

Abstract:Constructing a simple and accurate method to identify the risks and control nonpoint source pollution (NPSP) have become a principal target for the most watersheds with strong soil erosion and agricultural activities all over the world. In this study, the Qijiang River Basin in the Three Gorges Reservoir area (TGRA) was selected as the study area and the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) surface method and location-weighted landscape index (LWLI) were used to identify the source/sink pattern of the NPSP. The results from MCR modeling showed that the source landscape mainly distributed in the northern hilly area near the Yangtze River mainstream, however, the sink landscape mainly concentrated in the southern Simian Mountain area. The LWLI values in the north were higher than those in the south. Regression analysis showed that there is a significant correlation between the LWLI and soil erosion (R 2 = 0.635); meanwhile, there was also a certain relationship between the LWLI and water quality in the dry and wet seasons, ammonia nitrogen (NH3–N) and total phosphorus (TP) was the largest. The correlation coefficient between the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH3–N in the wet season was greater than that in the dry season, while total nitrogen (TN) and TP are exactly the opposite. The research results can help the areas with fragmented landscape, easy soil erosion, high agricultural activity, and lack of monitoring data to identify the risk of agricultural NPSP and formulate scientific water resources protection measures.

In-time source tracking of watershed loads of Taihu Lake Basin, China based on spatial relationship modeling

Abstract:Influent river carrying cumulative watershed load plays a significant role in promoting nuisance algal bloom in river-fed lake. It is most relevant to discern in-stream water quality exceedance and evaluate the spatial relationship between risk location and potential pollution sources. However, no comprehensive studies of source tracking in watershed based on management grid have been conducted for refined water quality management, particularly for plain terrain with complex river network. In this study, field investigations were implemented during 2014 in Taige Canal watershed of Taihu Lake Basin. A Geographical Information System (GIS)-based spatial relationship model was established to characterize the spatial relationships of "point (point-source location and monitoring site)-line (river segment)-plane (catchment)." As a practical exemplification, in-time source tracking was triggered on April 15, 2015 at Huangnianqiao station, where TN and TP concentration violated the water quality standard (TN 4.0 mg/L, TP 0.15 mg/L). Of the target grid cells, 53 and 46 were identified as crucial areas having high pollution intensity for TN and TP pollution, respectively. The estimated non-point source load in each grid cell could be apportioned into different source types based on spatial pollution-related entity objects. We found that the non-point source load derived from rural sewage and livestock and poultry breeding accounted for more than 80% of total TN or TP load than another source type of crop farming. The approach in this study would be of great benefit to local authorities for identifying the serious polluted regions and efficiently making environmental policies to reduce watershed load.

Abstract:A water environment quality evaluation and pollution source analysis can quantitatively examine the relationship among water pollution, resources, and the economy, and investigate the main factors affecting water quality. This paper took COD, NH3-N, and TP of the Tuojiang River as the research objects. The water environment quality evaluation and pollution source analysis of the Tuojiang River Basin were conducted based on the grey water footprint, decoupling theoretical model, and correlation analysis method. The results showed that grey water footprint decreased, and the water environment quality improved. Among the pollution sources of the grey water footprint, TP accounted for the highest proportion. Moreover, the economic development level and the water environment were generally in a state of high-quality coordination. Farmland and stock breeding pollution accounted for the largest proportion of agricultural pollution and were thus the main source of the grey water footprint. The results of Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that the source of the pollutants were the imported pollution from the tributaries and agricultural pollution (especially stock breeding and farmland irrigation). These results showed that the quality of the water environment was improving, and the main factors affecting the water environment were stock breeding and farmland pollution in agriculture. This study presents a decision-making basis for strengthening the ecological barrier in the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of ecological conservation and high-quality development in the Yangtze River Basin, there is an increasing demand for enhanced water pollution prevention and control in small watersheds. To delve deeper into the intricate relationship between pollutants and environmental features, as well as explore the key factors triggering pollution and their corresponding warning thresholds, this study was conducted along the Jiuqu River, a strategically managed unit in the upstream region of the Yangtze River, between 2022 and 2023. A total of seven monitoring sites were established, from which 161 valid water samples were collected. The k-nearest neighbors mutual information (KNN-MI) technique indicated that water temperature (WT) and relative humidity (RH) were the main environmental factors. The principal component analysis (PCA) of ten water quality parameters and three environmental factors unveiled the distinguishing characteristics of the primary pollution sources. Consequently, the pollution sources were categorized as treated wastewater > groundwater runoff > phytoplankton growth > abstersion wastewater > agricultural drainage. Furthermore, the regression decision tree (RDT) algorithm was used to explore the combined effects between pollutants and environmental factors, and to provide visual decision-making process and quantitative results for understanding the triggering mechanism of organic pollution in Jiuqu River. It conclusively identifies total phosphorus (TP) as the predominant triggering parameter with the threshold of 0.138 mg/L. The study is helpful to deal with potential water pollution problems preventatively and shows the interpretability and predictive performance of the RDT algorithm in water pollution prevention.

Abstract:Identifying potential sources of pollution in tributaries and determining their contribution rates are critical to the treatment of water pollution in main streams. In this paper, we conducted a multivariate statistical analysis on the water quality data of 12 parameters for 3 years (2018–2020) at six sampling sites in the Laixi River to qualitatively identify potential pollution sources and quantitatively calculate the contribution rates to reveal the tributaries' pollution status. Spatio-temporal cluster analysis (CA) divided 12 months into two parts, corresponding to the lightly polluted season (LPS) and highly polluted season (HPS), and six sampling sites were divided into two regions, corresponding to the lightly polluted region (LPR) and highly polluted region (HPR). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine the potential sources of contamination, identifying four and three potential factors in the LPS and HPS, respectively. The absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) receptor model quantitatively analyzed the contribution rates of identified pollution sources, and the importance of the different pollution sources in LPS can be ranked as domestic sewage and industrial wastewater and breeding pollution (33.80%) > soil weathering (29.02%) > agricultural activities (20.95%) > natural influence (13.03%). HPS can be classified as agricultural cultivation (41.23%), domestic sewage and industrial wastewater and animal waste (33.19%), and natural variations (21.43%). Four potential sources were identified in LPR ranked as rural domestic sewage (31.01%) > agricultural pollution (26.82%) > industrial effluents and free-range livestock and poultry pollution (25.13%) > natural influence (14.82%). Three identified latent pollution sources in HPR were municipal sewage and industrial effluents (37.96%) > agricultural nonpoint sources and livestock and poultry wastewater (33.55%) > natural sources (25.23%). Using multivariate statistical tools to identify and quantify potential pollution sources, managers may be able to enhance water quality in tributary watersheds and develop future management plans.

Abstract:Water quality assessment at the watershed scale requires not only an investigation of water pollution and the recognition of main pollution factors, but also the identification of polluted risky regions resulted in polluted surrounding river sections. To realize this objective, we collected water samplings from 67 sampling sites in the Honghe River watershed of China with Grid GIS method to analyze six parameters including dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Single factor pollution index and comprehensive pollution index were adopted to explore main water pollutants and evaluate water quality pollution level. Based on two evaluate methods, Geo-statistical analysis and Geographical Information System (GIS) were used to visualize the spatial pollution characteristics and identifying potential polluted risky regions. The results indicated that the general water quality in the watershed has been exposed to various pollutants, in which TP, NO2-N and TN were the main pollutants and seriously exceeded the standard of Category III. The zones of TP, TN, DO, NO2-N and NH3-N pollution covered 99.07%, 62.22%, 59.72%, 37.34% and 13.82% of the watershed respectively, and they were from medium to serious polluted. 83.27% of the watershed in total was polluted by comprehensive pollutants. These conclusions may provide useful and effective information for watershed water pollution control and management.
Spatiotemporal Patterns and Source Attribution of Nitrogen Load in A River Basin with Complex Pollution Sources

Abstract:Environmental problems such as eutrophication caused by excessive nutrient discharge are global challenges. There are complex pollution sources of nitrogen (N) discharge in many river basins worldwide. Knowledge of its pollution sources and their respective load contributions is essential to developing effective N pollution control strategies. N loads from all known anthropogenic pollution sources in the Upper Huai River basin of China were simulated with the process-based SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The performances of SWAT driven by daily and hourly rainfall inputs were assessed and it was found that the one driven by hourly rainfall outperformed the one driven by daily rainfall in simulating both total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) loads. The hourly SWAT model was hence used to examine the spatiotemporal patterns of TN and NH4-N loads and their source attributions. TN load exhibited significant seasonal variations with the largest in summer and the smallest in spring. Despite its declining proportion of contribution downstream, crop production remained the largest contributor of TN load followed by septic tanks, concentrated animal feedlot operations (CAFOs), municipal sewage treatment plants, industries, and scattered animal feedlot operations (SAFOs). There was much less seasonal variation in NH4-N load. CAFOs remained the largest source of NH4-N load throughout the basin, while contributions from industries and municipal sewage treatment plants were more evident downstream. Our study results suggest the need to shift the focus of N load reduction from "end-of-pipe" sewage treatment to an integrated approach emphasizing stakeholder involvement and source prevention.

Abstract:This paper reports a through-wafer interconnect structure using air-isolated p/sup ++/ silicon columns suspended by metal beams. The approach minimizes parasitic capacitance and does not require the lightly-doped wafers and DC bias associated with pn-junction isolation. The interconnects are therefore well suited for use in battery-operated microsystems. The through-wafer conductors have a calculated series resistance of approximately 5 /spl Omega/ and a capacitance to the substrate of 10 fF. Including the metal support frame, the area of each feedthrough is 0.01 mm/sup 2/, and using clustered columns, the per-feedthrough area is still smaller.

Abstract:The non-point source (NPS) is the main cause of surface water pollution in Taihu Lake basin in southeast China, therefore the quantitative analysis for the effects of NPS on water environment is the vital basis for water pollution control in the area. Surface water quality models, with the emphasis on the spatial and temporal changes of pollutants, are the most important tools for watershed environment management planning, which provide scientific basis for assessment and control of NPS pollution of watershed environment. However, because of the characteristics of the generation of agricultural NPS pollution loads, its spatial and temporal distribution was averaged in water quality simulating for a long time, which reduced the precision of prediction and the feasibility of real-time forecasting. In water quality simulation, the spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural NPS pollution loads can be determined based on the concept of catchment area of unit river length. When the time scale of calculation is relatively long (e.g. yearly), pollutant load of non-point source can also be averaged annually and put into segments; and when it is relatively short, pollutant load can be distributed based on storm duration. This paper presented the methods of agricultural NPS pollution loads estimation and its spatial and temporal distribution for the plain area watershed. The estimation of NPS pollution load involves the characteristics of runoff pollution loads from different land uses, such as dry land, paddy-field, urban areas etc. In this paper, Suzhou is taken as a case study, for there are so many rivers and streams, which form a complex stream-net. The result of the case study showed that the represented empirical formula for estimation of NPS is feasible. The method of spatial and temporal distribution of NPS pollution loads based on the concept of catchment area of unit river length can improve the prediction precision of water quality models, as well as make it possible for real-time water quality simulation in the plain area. © copyright ASCE 2005.
