Abstract:Significantly abundant uranium resources in seawater are considered promising alternatives to terrestrial uranium reserves. The adsorption capacity and speed, binding selectivity, mechanical properties, and antibiofouling ability are the most important features for practical uranium adsorbent applications. Herein, a new nanocellulose aerogel, which contains specific binding spatial structures for uranyl ions, designated as I-CNF aerogel, is fabricated by combining ion-imprinting and chemical cross-linking strategies. The ion-imprinted and chemically stabilized functional sites endow the I-CNF aerogel with robust binding affinity and selectivity for uranyl ions. The ordered lamellar structure, porosity, and high hydrophilicity together facilitate uranyl ion access to the functional sites in the adsorbent and endow the adsorbent with a high uranium adsorption capacity. Furthermore, owing to the chemical cross-linking process and the generated Schiff base groups, the adsorbent exhibits high mechanical strength, excellent reusability, and effective antibiofouling activity. Benefitting from these optimized properties, I-CNF aerogel demonstrates a high uranium extraction capacity of 9.46 mg g −1 with an ultrahigh selectivity of 19.01 to uranium against vanadium in natural seawater, making it a highly potential candidate for practical uranium extraction in natural seawater.

Abstract:As a green and economical energy, nuclear power plays a significant role in the global energy supply. Uranium extraction from seawater is a highly promising strategy to utilize unconventional uranium resources and ensure the sustainability of the nuclear industry. However, the current uranium absorbents still suffer from long extraction time, low adsorption capacity, and poor selectivity. In this study, an amidoxime-functionalized cellulose nanofibers/MXene aerogel (MCA) with a three-dimensional porous structure was fabricated for efficient uranium extraction from seawater through electro-/physicochemical adsorption processes. The abundant porous structures and functional groups endowed the MCA with a high adsorption capacity of 515.46 mg/g in the physicochemical adsorption process. Furthermore, the MCA adsorbed 13.82 mg/g of uranium from natural seawater after 28 days with a superior selectivity for uranyl ions. Encouragingly, the uranium extraction performance was significantly boosted via the assistance of an electric field. By applying a voltage of 1.0 V, the MCA presented an improved extraction capacity of 1826.38 mg/g and accelerated adsorption kinetic. Meanwhile, the MCA electrode possessed good stability and high reusability of 84.30% after five adsorption–desorption cycles, which insured that MCA was a promising uranium adsorbent in long-term application. This work offers a universal paradigm for the design of highly efficient electro-adsorbents and also expands the scope of external field enhancement in the area of uranium extraction.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater is considered as an efficient strategy to meet the increasing demands of uranium. Amidoxime has been reported as one of the most efficient groups for uranium affinity. Herein, amidoximated cellulose fibers were synthesized by grafting polyacrylonitrile (PAN) onto cellulose fibers followed by amidoxime modification. The amidoximated cellulose fibers showed maximum adsorption capacity of 52.88 mg g-1 (pH = 5.0), and its static adsorption process was well fitted with Langmuir model and Pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to the chelating reaction between uranyl complexes and amidoximated cellulose fibers. The prepared fibers were further fabricated into nonwoven membrane for dynamic adsorption, and the breakthrough curves were well fitted to Dose-Response model. The amidoximated cellulose fiber membrane showed a good adsorption capacity of 1.22 mg g-1 at pH 8.0 after filtrating 10.0 L simulated seawater, demonstrating promising efficient engineering materials for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:According to the global vision of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", extracting uranium from natural seawater is regarded as a promising candidate for meeting nuclear fuel demand. Nevertheless, owing to the very low uranium concentration and complexity of natural seawater, the development of adsorbent materials for extracting uranium from seawater with satisfactory efficiencies remains a great challenge. In this work, we for the first time developed a novel mesocellular silica foam (MSF) supported hyperbranched poly(amidoxime-ethyleneimine) (PAO-PEI) network (). After systematic evaluation, the exhibited high adsorption capacity and excellent reusability, fast adsorption kinetics as well as good adsorption selectivity and affinity towards uranyl ions, simultaneously. Besides the obtained short equilibrium time of ∼ 20 h, the achieved a remarkable adsorption capacity of 926.2 mg-U/g-Ads. for 100 mg/L of uranium water solution. Meanwhile, the showed evident higher selectivity towards uranium (29.3 mg g −1 ) against vanadium (7.2 mg g −1 ) and other coexisting metal ions in simulated seawater. Moreover, excellent reusability of in eight consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles was also observed. More importantly, satisfactory extraction efficiencies (90.6–92.9 %) for U-spiked real seawater was obtained in 48 h. Finally, a uranium adsorption capacity of 1.102 mg g −1 for coastal seawater in 20 days was obtained. All these findings demonstrate the relatively good potential of for extracting uranium from real seawater.

Abstract:There are approximately 4 billion tons of uranium in the ocean, which is unmatched by the surface. Nevertheless, it's very challenging to extract uranium from the ocean due to the exceedingly low concentration of uranium in the ocean (about 3.3 μg L-1) as well as high salinity level. Current methods are often limited by selectivity, sustainability, economics, etc. Herein, phosphoric acid group and amidoxime group were grafted to skin collagen fibers through " initiated access" to design a new uranium extraction material, abbreviated as CGPA. Through laboratory simulation experiments, it is concluded that the maximum adsorption capacity of CGPA for uranium reaches 263.86 mg g-1. It has high adsorption, selectivity, and reusability for uranium. In the actual seawater extraction experiment, CGPA obtained 29.64 μg of uranium after extracting 10.0 L of seawater, and the extraction rate was 90.1%. The adsorbent has excellent effects in kinetics, selectivity, extraction capacity, renewability, etc. In the extraction of uranium from seawater, and is an economically feasible and industrially expandable adsorbent.
High-Capacity Amidoxime-Functionalized β-Cyclodextrin/Graphene Aerogel for Selective Uranium Capture

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater is a grand challenge of mounting severity as the energy demand increases with a growing global population. An amidoxime-functionalized carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin/graphene aerogel (GDC) is developed for highly efficient and selective uranium extraction via a facile one-pot hydrothermal process. GDC reaches equilibrium in 1 h, and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir model is 654.2 mg/g. Benefiting from the chelation and complexation reaction, the obtained GDC has an excellent selectivity even when the competitive cations, anions, and oil pollutants exist. In addition, the aerogel possesses great mechanical integrity and remains intact after 10 compression cycles. Meanwhile, the GDC can be easily regenerated and maintains a high reusability of 87.3% after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Abstract:Extracting uranium from seawater, which contains hundreds of times more than terrestrial ores, furnishes a sustainable energy resource while curbing carbon emissions. Nanofibrous-based amidoxime is the most reliable uranium adsorbent due to its abundant chelating sites and large surface area. However, the amidoximation (AO) of polyacrylonitrile nanofiber (PAN NFs) produces brittle and shrunk AO-PAN NFs, and the spinning of pre-amidoximed PAN produces sub-micro stiff poly amidoxime (PAO) NFs, restricting their applicability. Herein, pre-cyclization (210 °C) and optimized amidoximation are applied to construct a hydrogel shell layer from PAO on cyclized electrospun PAN NFs. Among different amidoximation ratios, AO10-CPAN mats (10 g/L) with a thin hydrogel PAO shell layer exhibit excellent mechanical strength, high uranium adsorption capacity reached 380 mg/g at pH 8, and maintained their structure and 89 % of their initial adsorption capacity after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, a 20.6 mg/g uranium adsorption capacity is reached after 15 days of circulating spiked (300 ppb uranium) natural seawater through the AO10-CPAN mats, proving their excellent selectivity and the open-chain amidoxime is the main compound of PAO shell. The surface amidoximed cyclized PAN (AO10-CPAN) mats satisfy the mechanical and physiochemical requirements for effectively extracting uranium from seawater.

Abstract:The efficient enrichment of uranium from the seawater is urgently required for the long-term development of nuclear energy. Here, a plasma-light-amidoxime-cellulose (PLAOC) adsorbent formed by introducing functional groups onto cellulose has been designed for the environmental friendliness of amidoxime materials. In the presence of Na 2 CO 3 , this composite exhibited excellent uranium enrichment performance up to 101.15 mg·g −1 at 303 K and pH 6.0. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. The results indicated that U(VI) adsorption on PLAOC could depend on the chelation of oxy-nitrogen elements in the amidoxime group. Furthermore, PLAOC showed good adsorption selectivity. Most importantly, the enrichment of uranium on PLAOC was excellent in the simulated seawater. These findings demonstrate that employing plasma technology to prepare uranium-rich adsorbents can be a promising and viable approach.

Abstract:Uranium is one of the important nuclear resource.Extracting uranium from seawater is considered to be a promising way that can resolve the uranium resource shortage in the future.The recent progress of China in the uranium adsorption materials used in seawater has been summarized in this paper.It was concluded that the matrix structure and the micro function configuration played an important role in the uranium absorption performance through comparing different material types such as polymer materials,carbon materials,silicate material,etc.Combined with the theoretical calculation and domestic scale test in real seawater,it is proposed that the uranium adsorption materials have application value only with large specific surface area,excellent uranium selectively absorption ability and stable in the open flow seawater system.

Abstract:The amidoxime-modified ultrathin polyethylene fibrous membrane (called as AFM) is prepared by a two-step graft polymerization method. The nano-sized particle structures are constructed on the AFM adsorbents sur-face after grafting. The adsorption behaviors of AFM adsorbent are studied by laboratory scale adsorption ex-periments. The adsorption results show that the adsorption of uranium by AFM is an endothermic spontaneous behavior without additional driving force. The AFM absorbent shows high specific surface area, good mechanical property and outstanding reusability of >12 cycles. Furthermore, the AFM adsorbent has a high uranium adsorption capacity of 147.38 mg/g in 8 ppm U-spiked simulated seawater for 96 h and 7.46 mg/g in natural seawater for 56 days. The results show that the degree of grafting (DG) and thickness of the membrane are the two key factors affecting the adsorption capacity. The adsorbent with thinner membrane thickness has a higher adsorption capacity at a moderate DG. This is because at moderate DG, the thinner the membrane is, the easier the adsorption sites are contacted by uranium ions. This work presents a novel membrane adsorbent with high uranium adsorption capacity and long service life, which shows significant application potential for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:The oceans contain a significant amount of uranium, a valuable resource for nuclear power and fuel applications. However, current technologies for extracting uranium from seawater have limitations, including low efficiency and high energy consumption. Aerogels are promising materials for uranyl ion adsorption due to their high porosity and abundant active sites. This study presents a novel approach for efficient uranium extraction from seawater using a full-fiber-based PAO/PPy aerogel. This aerogel enables rapid diffusion of uranium and accelerated adsorption in the presence of heat generated by sun irradiation, achieving a high adsorption capacity of 69.66 mg g −1 under 1 kW m −2 in 50 mg L −1 solution. The dynamical and thermodynamic simulations indicate the presence of both chemisorption and physisorption throughout the adsorption process. Additionally, the composite aerogel is demonstrated antifouling performance and excellent selectivity of U(VI) in a mixed ionic solution. The present study offers a novel approach for the rational design of aerogel adsorbents that can effectively extract uranium from seawater in outdoor environments, without the need for additional energy input.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) aerogel was prepared via simple covalent crosslinking and freeze-drying method. The porous cellulose aerogel possessed high specific surface area and high metal-chelating capacity, which showed fast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity (440.60 mg g−1) in static uranium adsorption process. In the dynamic filtration system, the maximum adsorption capacity reached 194 mg g−1 with the initial concentration of 10 mg L−1. In addition, the CNFs aerogel possessed excellent selectivity and good regeneration ability for uranium adsorption. The integrated analyses of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) suggested that the predominant UO22+ species formed inner-sphere surface complexes with two active carboxyl groups in the coordination model. This strategy may provide a sustainable route for development of efficient biomass-based adsorbents for selective uranium removal from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Seawater reserves about 4.5 billion tons of uranium, if properly extracted, could be a sustainable green energy resource for hundreds of years, alternating its limited terrestrial ore and reducing the CO 2 emitted from fossil fuels. The current seawater uranium adsorbents suffer neither economically viable nor adsorption efficiency, requiring more development to harvest satisfactorily uranium from seawater. Amidoxime-based fibrous adsorbents are the most promising adsorbents of seawater uranium due to abundant chelating sites. However, they suffer from severe shrinkage and stiffness once they dry, losing porous architecture and mechanical properties. Herein, an economical and scalable two-nozzle electrospinning technology was applied to produce poly amidoxime nanofibers (PAO NFs) supported by Poly acrylonitrile nanofibers (PAN NFs) as composite PAO/PAN nanofibrous mats with high structure stability. These PAO/PAN mats, with rapid wettability and excellent mechanical strength, show promising uranium adsorption capacities of 369.8 mg/g at seawater pH level, much higher than PAO and PAN NFs. The uranium adsorption capacity of the PAO/PAN mat reached 5.16 mg/g after 7 days of circulating (10 ppm uranium) spiked natural seawater. Importantly, the composite mat maintained its fibrous structure after five adsorption-desorption cycles with more than 80 % of its adsorption capacity, confirming its recyclability and stability. Therefore, the composite PAO/PAN mat fulfills the basic requirements for effectively and economically trapping uranium from seawater, which could be a matrix for further development.

Abstract:As the key material of the adsorption method used for practical uranium extraction from seawater, the adsorbent should have a high uranium adsorption capacity and long service life. Polyethylene nanofibrous membranes (PENFMs) using a one-step grafting strategy to prepare scalable membrane adsorbents are reported with supreme uranium uptake capacity and long service life. A series of amidoximated polyethylene nanofibrous membrane (called amidoximated membrane or AM) adsorbent materials with different degrees of grafting (DGs) are modified by one-step radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylic acid (AA) and an amidoximation reaction. The AM adsorbents prepared from the PENFM show outstanding hydrophilicity, good adsorption capacity, and excellent affinity for uranium. The highest uranium uptake capacity of AM adsorbents is 115.32 mg/g in simulated seawater for 24 h and 6.03 mg/g in natural seawater for 10 weeks. The AM adsorbents are reusable for more than 10 cycles of continuous adsorption–desorption–regeneration tests, showing the long service life. In addition, the AM adsorbent adsorption results in natural seawater indicate that only prolonging time to pursue high adsorption capacity is not conducive to the acquisition of benefits. The AM adsorbents have broad potential application in the industrialization of uranium extraction from seawater by choosing the best adsorption efficiency to achieve high adsorption amount.

Abstract:The oceans contain hundreds of times more uranium than terrestrial ores. Fiber-based adsorption is considered to be the most promising method to realize the industrialization of uranium extraction from seawater. In this work, a pre-amidoximation with a blow spinning strategy is developed for mass production of poly(imide dioxime) nanofiber (PIDO NF) adsorbents with many chelating sites, excellent hydrophilicity, 3D porous architecture, and good mechanical properties. The structural evidences from C-13 NMR spectra confirm that the main functional group responsible for the uranyl binding is not "amidoxime" but cyclic "imidedioxime." The uranium adsorption capacity of the PIDO NF adsorbent reaches 951 mg-U per g-Ads in uranium (8 ppm) spiked natural seawater. An average adsorption capacity of 8.7 mg-U per g-Ads is obtained after 56 d of exposure in natural seawater via a flow-through column system. Moreover, up to 98.5% of the adsorbed uranium can be rapidly eluted out and the adsorbent can be regenerated and reused for over eight cycles of adsorption-desorption. This new blow spun PIDO nanofabric shows great potential as a new generation adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:The development of adsorbents for highly efficient extraction of uranium from seawater is a crucial for generating nuclear energy. However, their practical application is limited because of low U/V selectivity and recovery difficulties. Herein, we developed a new magnetic photothermal composite hydrogel (Gel-Fe3O4/PAO) adsorbent to facilitate efficient recovery and selective extraction of uranium from seawater. The hydrogel exhibits excellent tensile strength and self-recovery ability owing to the double-network structure formed via the physical crosslinking of gelatin and polymerization of acrylamide (AM). Furthermore, the photothermal conversion performance of Fe3O4 nanoparticles improves the uranium selectivity of PAO and enables magnetic recovery of the hydrogel. Adsorption results show that when the Fe3O4 and gelatin contents are 1.5 wt.% and 16 wt.%, respectively, the hydrogel can be rapidly heated under light, meeting the requirements of high adsorption capacity (515.5 mg·g-1) and selectivity (Kd (U) /Kd (V) = 2.77) for uranium ions. After seven sorption-desorption cycles, the uranium adsorption capacity of the Gel-Fe3O4/PAO hydrogel remains at nearly 89 %. In simulated seawater experiments, the Gel-Fe3O4/PAO hydrogel exhibits excellent impact resistance and a high selective uranium removal rate, demonstrating its considerable potential for practical application in uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Extraction of uranium from radioactive wastewater is a critical challenge in the modern era of the prevalence of nuclear fuel. Herein, polyethyene polyamine/polydopamine modified carboxylated chitosan aerogels (PEPAx/PDAy-CMCSm-n) were obtained by a simple one-step cross-linking method for efficient and selective uranium adsorption. Carboxylation of chitosan substrates greatly improved solubility in water, which increased flexibility for biomass chitosan modification. More importantly, the PDA bonded coating avoided the problem of low availability of reactive sites caused by steric hindrance between CMCS and PEPA. The abundant –NH 2 in the surface modifier PEPA endowed the chitosan aerogels with sufficient active sites, making it exhibit a high uranium adsorption capacity of 467.73 mg g −1 . The optimal preparation scheme of aerogels was designed by comprehensive orthogonal experiments for the reactive monomer additive amounts. The obtained PEPA2.0/PDA0.7-CMCS3.5–250 showed prominent kinetics, excellent selectivity and superior regeneration performance. Importantly, reducing uranium concentration from 12.35 mg L -1 to 10 ug L -1 in simulated nuclear wastewater, which is below the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People's Republic of China uranium limit for drinking water (30 ug L -1 ). Besides, the density functional theory calculations revealed the binding mechanism and coordination mode between the adsorption unit and UO 2 2+ . Such efficient and low-cost adsorbed aerogels are extremely advantageous for uranium capture in real environments.

Abstract:The uranium level in seawater is ≈1000 times as high as terrestrial ores and can provide potential near-infinite fuel for the nuclear energy industry. However, it is still a significant challenge to develop high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbents for massively extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, a simple and fast method through low-energy consumption sunlight polymerization to direct fabrication of a poly(amidoxime) (PAO) hydrogel membrane, which exhibits high uranium adsorption capacity, is reported. This PAO hydrogel owns semi-interpenetrating structure and a hydrophilic poly(acrylamide) 3D network of hydrogel which can disperse and fix PAOs well. As a result, the amidoxime groups of PAOs exhibit an outstanding uranium adsorption efficiency (718 ± 16.6 and 1279 ± 14.5 mg g-1 of m uranium/m PAO in 8 and 32 ppm uranium-spiked seawater, respectively) among reported hydrogel-based adsorbents. Most importantly, U-uptake capacity of this hydrogel can achieve 4.87 ± 0.38 mg g-1 of m uranium/m dry gel just after four weeks within natural seawater. Furthermore, this hydrogel can be massively produced through low-energy consumption and environmentally-friendly sunlight polymerization. This work will provide a high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbent for massive uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Extracting uranium from seawater has become an important method to supplement the nuclear industry. Herein, we introduce a simple route to load conjugated microporous polymers onto collagen fiber membranes, resulting in a novel membrane adsorbent material (CMPA-F/CFM) for uranium capture. Its Langmuir adsorption capacity reaches 304.9 mg·g −1 (at 318 K), with fast adsorption kinetic of 60 min, and excellent adsorption selectivity with K d = 4.69 × 10 4 mL·g −1 under the temperature of 298 K, initial concentration of 50 mg·L -1 , and pH = 7, thus allowing a satisfactory adsorption performance in a 7-day real ocean experiment with a uranium adsorption capacity of 1.25 mg·g −1 . Furthermore, in continuous dynamic adsorption experiments, CMPA-F/CFM could treat up to 19.0 L·g −1 of low-enriched uranium (LEU) solution (1 mg·L -1 ), with a uranium removal rate of up to 87.5 % (10 L of seawater). This study demonstrates broad potential application of membrane adsorption in extraction of low-enriched uranium.

Abstract:Amidoxime-functionalized hydrogels are one of most promising adsorbents for high-efficiency uranium (U) extraction from seawater, but bioadhesion on their surface seriously decreases their adsorption efficiency and largely shortens their service life. Herein, a semi-interpenetrating zwitterion–poly(amidoxime) (ZW-PAO) hydrogel was explored through introducing a PAO polymer into a poly [3-(dimethyl 4-vinylbenzyl amino) propyl sulfonate] (PDVBAP) polyzwitterionic (PZW) network via ultraviolet (UV) polymerization. Owing to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of the PZW network, this ZW-PAO hydrogel can provide excellent super-hydrophilicity in seawater for high-efficiency U-adsorption from seawater. Furthermore, the ZW-PAO hydrogel had outstanding anti-biofouling performance for both highly enhanced U-adsorption and a relatively long working life in natural seawater. As a result, during only 25 days in seawater (without filtering bacteria), the U-uptake amount of this ZW-PAO hydrogel can reach 9.38 mg/g and its average rate can reach 0.375 mg/(g∙day), which is excellent among reported adsorbents. This work has explored a promising hydrogel for high-efficiency U-recovery from natural seawater and will inspire new strategy for U-adsorbing materials.
