Abstract:Background: Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a major challenge to modern healthcare. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of machine learning (ML) approaches in predicting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in critical pathogens (CP), considering Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Methods: The search covered databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and SCIELO, from their inception until June 2024. The review protocol was officially registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024543099). Results: The review included 26 papers, analyzing data from 104,141 microbial samples. Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, and logistic regression (LR) emerged as the top-performing models, with mean Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUC) values of 0.89, 0.87, and 0.87, respectively. RF showed superior performance with AUC values ranging from 0.66 to 0.97, while XGBoost and LR showed similar performance with AUC values ranging from 0.83 to 0.91 and 0.76 to 0.96, respectively. Most studies indicate that integrating WGS and AST data into ML models enhances predictive performance, improves antibiotic stewardship, and provides valuable clinical decision support. ML shows significant promise for predicting AMR by integrating WGS and AST data in CP. Standardized guidelines are needed to ensure consistency in future research.

Abstract:Prediction of antibiotic resistance phenotypes from whole genome sequencing data by machine learning methods has been proposed as a promising platform for the development of sequence-based diagnostics. However, there has been no systematic evaluation of factors that may influence performance of such models, how they might apply to and vary across clinical populations, and what the implications might be in the clinical setting. Here, we performed a meta-analysis of seven large Neisseria gonorrhoeae datasets, as well as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii datasets, with whole genome sequence data and antibiotic susceptibility phenotypes using set covering machine classification, random forest classification, and random forest regression models to predict resistance phenotypes from genotype. We demonstrate how model performance varies by drug, dataset, resistance metric, and species, reflecting the complexities of generating clinically relevant conclusions from machine learning-derived models. Our findings underscore the importance of incorporating relevant biological and epidemiological knowledge into model design and assessment and suggest that doing so can inform tailored modeling for individual drugs, pathogens, and clinical populations. We further suggest that continued comprehensive sampling and incorporation of up-to-date whole genome sequence data, resistance phenotypes, and treatment outcome data into model training will be crucial to the clinical utility and sustainability of machine learning-based molecular diagnostics.Machine learning-based prediction of antibiotic resistance from bacterial genome sequences represents a promising tool to rapidly determine the antibiotic susceptibility profile of clinical isolates and reduce the morbidity and mortality resulting from inappropriate and ineffective treatment. However, while there has been much focus on demonstrating the diagnostic potential of these modeling approaches, there has been little assessment of potential caveats and prerequisites associated with implementing predictive models of drug resistance in the clinical setting. Our results highlight significant biological and technical challenges facing the application of machine learning-based prediction of antibiotic resistance as a diagnostic tool. Identification of key drivers of antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus using machine learning

Abstract:With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) rapidly evolving in pathogens, quick and accurate identification of genetic determinants of phenotypic resistance is essential for improving surveillance, stewardship, and clinical mitigation. Machine learning (ML) models show promise for AMR prediction in diagnostics but require a deep understanding of internal processes to use effectively. Our study utilized AMR gene, pangenomic, and predicted plasmid features from 647 Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis genomes across the One Health continuum, along with corresponding resistance phenotypes, to develop interpretive ML classifiers. Vancomycin resistance could be predicted with 99% accuracy with AMR gene features, 98% with pangenome features, and 96% with plasmid clusters. Top pangenome features overlapped with the resistance genes of the vanA operon, which are often laterally transmitted via plasmids. Doxycycline resistance prediction achieved approximately 92% accuracy with pangenome features, with the top feature being elements of Tn916 conjugative transposon, a tet(M) carrier. Erythromycin resistance prediction models achieved about 90% accuracy, but top features were negatively correlated with resistance due to the confounding effect of population structure. This work demonstrates the importance of reviewing ML models’ features to discern biological relevance even when achieving high-performance metrics. Our workflow offers the potential to propose hypotheses for experimental testing, enhancing the understanding of AMR mechanisms, which are crucial for combating the AMR crisis.

Repurposing MALDI-TOF MS for effective antibiotic resistance screening in Staphylococcus epidermidis using machine learning

Abstract:The emergence of Staphylococcus epidermidis as a significant nosocomial pathogen necessitates advancements in more efficient antimicrobial resistance profiling. However, existing culture-based and PCR-based antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods are far too slow or costly. This study combines machine learning with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to develop predictive models for various antibiotics using a comprehensive dataset containing thousands of S. epidermidis isolates. Optimized machine learning models utilized feature selection and achieved high AUROC scores ranging from 0.80 to 0.95 while maintaining AUPRC scores up to 0.97. Shapley Additive exPlanations were employed to analyze relevant features and assess the significance of corresponding protein biomarkers while also verifying that predictive power was derived from the detection of proteins rather than noise. Antimicrobial resistance models were validated externally to evaluate model performance outside the original data collection site. The approaches and findings in this study demonstrate a significant advancement in rapid, cost-effective antimicrobial resistance profiling, offering a promising solution for improving treatments for nosocomial infections and being potentially applicable to other microbial pathogens in the future.
Direct prediction of antimicrobial resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa by metagenomic next-generation sequencing

Abstract:Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa has strong drug resistance and can tolerate a variety of antibiotics, which is a major problem in the management of antibiotic-resistant infections. Direct prediction of multi-drug resistance (MDR) resistance phenotypes of P. aeruginosa isolates and clinical samples by genotype is helpful for timely antibiotic treatment. Methods: In the study, whole genome sequencing (WGS) data of 494 P. aeruginosa isolates were used to screen key anti-microbial resistance (AMR)-associated genes related to imipenem (IPM), meropenem (MEM), piperacillin/tazobactam (TZP), and levofloxacin (LVFX) resistance in P. aeruginosa by comparing genes with copy number differences between resistance and sensitive strains. Subsequently, for the direct prediction of the resistance of P. aeruginosa to four antibiotics by the AMR-associated features screened, we collected 74 P. aeruginosa positive sputum samples to sequence by metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS), of which 1 sample with low quality was eliminated. Then, we constructed the resistance prediction model. Results: We identified 93, 88, 80, 140 AMR-associated features for IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance in P. aeruginosa . The relative abundance of AMR-associated genes was obtained by matching mNGS and WGS data. The top 20 features with importance degree for IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance were used to model, respectively. Then, we used the random forest algorithm to construct resistance prediction models of P. aeruginosa , in which the areas under the curves of the IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance prediction models were all greater than 0.8, suggesting these resistance prediction models had good performance. Conclusion: In summary, mNGS can predict the resistance of P. aeruginosa by directly detecting AMR-associated genes, which provides a reference for rapid clinical detection of drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract:Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the major concerns of clinicians and one of the global public health problems. This pathogen is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In the last few years, reduced genome sequencing costs have made it possible to explore more of the drug resistance of S. pneumoniae, and machine learning (ML) has become a popular tool for understanding, diagnosing, treating, and predicting these phenotypes. Nucleotide k-mers, amino acid k-mers, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and combinations of these features have rich genetic information in whole-genome sequencing. This study compares different ML models for predicting AMR phenotype for S. pneumoniae. We compared nucleotide k-mers, amino acid k-mers, SNPs, and their combinations to predict AMR in S. pneumoniae for three antibiotics: Penicillin, Erythromycin, and Tetracycline. 980 pneumococcal strains were downloaded from the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA). Furthermore, we used and compared several machine learning methods to train the models, including random forests, support vector machines, stochastic gradient boosting, and extreme gradient boosting. In this study, we found that key features of the AMR prediction model setup and the choice of machine learning method affected the results. The approach can be applied here to further studies to improve AMR prediction accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:With the reduction in sequencing price and acceleration of sequencing speed, it is particularly important to directly link the genotype and phenotype of bacteria. Here, we firstly predicted the minimum inhibitory concentrations of ten antimicrobial agents for Staphylococcus aureus using 466 isolates by directly extracting k-mer from whole genome sequencing data combined with three machine learning algorithms: random forest, support vector machine, and XGBoost. Considering one two-fold dilution, the essential agreement and the category agreement could reach >85% and >90% for most antimicrobial agents. For clindamycin, cefoxitin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, the essential agreement and the category agreement could reach >91% and >93%, providing important information for clinical treatment. The successful prediction of cefoxitin resistance showed that the model could identify methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The results suggest that small datasets available in large hospitals could bypass the existing basic research and known antimicrobial resistance genes and accurately predict the bacterial phenotype.
Assessing computational predictions of antimicrobial resistance phenotypes from microbial genomes

Abstract:The advent of rapid whole-genome sequencing has created new opportunities for computational prediction of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotypes from genomic data. Both rule-based and machine learning (ML) approaches have been explored for this task, but systematic benchmarking is still needed. Here, we evaluated four state-of-the-art ML methods (Kover, PhenotypeSeeker, Seq2Geno2Pheno, and Aytan-Aktug), an ML baseline, and the rule-based ResFinder by training and testing each of them across 78 species–antibiotic datasets, using a rigorous benchmarking workflow that integrates three evaluation approaches, each paired with three distinct sample splitting methods. Our analysis revealed considerable variation in the performance across techniques and datasets. Whereas ML methods generally excelled for closely related strains, ResFinder excelled for handling divergent genomes. Overall, Kover most frequently ranked top among the ML approaches, followed by PhenotypeSeeker and Seq2Geno2Pheno. AMR phenotypes for antibiotic classes such as macrolides and sulfonamides were predicted with the highest accuracies. The quality of predictions varied substantially across species–antibiotic combinations, particularly for beta-lactams; across species, resistance phenotyping of the beta-lactams compound, aztreonam, amox-clav, cefoxitin, ceftazidime, and piperacillin/tazobactam, alongside tetracyclines demonstrated more variable performance than the other benchmarked antibiotics. By organism, and phenotypes were more robustly predicted than those of , , , , , , , , and Mycobacterium tuberculos . In addition, our study provides software recommendations for each species–antibiotic combination. It furthermore highlights the need for optimization for robust clinical applications, particularly for strains that diverge substantially from those used for training.

Abstract:Limited therapy options due to antibiotic resistance underscore the need for optimization of current diagnostics. In some bacterial species, antimicrobial resistance can be unambiguously predicted based on their genome sequence. In this study, we sequenced the genomes and transcriptomes of 414 drug‐resistant clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. By training machine learning classifiers on information about the presence or absence of genes, their sequence variation, and expression profiles, we generated predictive models and identified biomarkers of resistance to four commonly administered antimicrobial drugs. Using these data types alone or in combination resulted in high (0.8–0.9) or very high (> 0.9) sensitivity and predictive values. For all drugs except for ciprofloxacin, gene expression information improved diagnostic performance. Our results pave the way for the development of a molecular resistance profiling tool that reliably predicts antimicrobial susceptibility based on genomic and transcriptomic markers. The implementation of a molecular susceptibility test system in routine microbiology diagnostics holds promise to provide earlier and more detailed information on antibiotic resistance profiles of bacterial pathogens and thus could change how physicians treat bacterial infections.

Abstract:Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to public health and farming at large. In clinical and veterinary practice, timely characterization of the antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacterial infections is a crucial step in optimizing treatment. High-throughput sequencing is a promising option for clinical point-of-care and ecological surveillance, opening the opportunity to develop genotyping-based AMR determination as a possibly faster alternative to phenotypic testing. In the present work, we compare the performance of state-of-the-art methods for detection of AMR using high-throughput sequencing data from clinical settings. We consider five computational approaches based on alignment (AMRPlusPlus), deep learning (DeepARG), k -mer genomic signatures (KARGA, ResFinder) or hidden Markov models (Meta-MARC). We use an extensive collection of 585 isolates with available AMR resistance profiles determined by phenotypic tests across nine antibiotic classes. We show how the prediction landscape of AMR classifiers is highly heterogeneous, with balanced accuracy varying from 0.40 to 0.92. Although some algorithms—ResFinder, KARGA, and AMRPlusPlus– exhibit overall better balanced accuracy than others, the high per-AMR-class variance and related findings suggest that: (1) all algorithms might be subject to sampling bias present both in data repositories used for training and experimental/clinical settings; and (2) a portion of clinical samples might contain uncharacterized AMR genes that the algorithms—mostly trained on known AMR genes—fail to generalize upon. These results lead us to formulate practical advice for software configuration and application, and give suggestions for future study designs to further develop AMR prediction tools from proof-of-concept to bedside.

AMR prediction models were validated externally to evaluate model performance outside the original data collection site. The findings in this study demonstrate that combining machine learning with AMR profiling yields significant and relevant results, indicating that such an approach is a promising solution for rapid and cost-effective treatments for nosocomial infections. Models created to predict AMR can also aid in biomarker discovery. The workflow used in the present study is potentially applicable to other microbial pathogens in the future.

Abstract:Aim. Due to the growing availability of genomic datasets, machine learning models have shown impressive diagnostic potential in identifying emerging and reemerging pathogens. This study aims to use machine learning techniques to develop and compare a model for predicting bacterial resistance to a panel of 12 classes of antibiotics using whole genome sequence (WGS) data of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Method. A machine learning technique called Random Forest (RF) and BioWeka was used for classification accuracy assessment and logistic regression (LR) for statistical analysis. Results. Our results show 44.66% of isolates were resistant to twelve antimicrobial agents and 55.33% were sensitive. The mean classification accuracy was obtained ≥98% for BioWeka and ≥96 for RF on these families of antimicrobials. Where ampicillin was 99.31% and 94.00%, amoxicillin was 99.02% and 95.21%, meropenem was 98.27% and 96.63%, cefepime was 99.73% and 98.34%, fosfomycin was 96.44% and 99.23%, ceftazidime was 98.63% and 94.31%, chloramphenicol was 98.71% and 96.00%, erythromycin was 95.76% and 97.63%, tetracycline was 99.27% and 98.25%, gentamycin was 98.00% and 97.30%, butirosin was 99.57% and 98.03%, and ciprofloxacin was 96.17% and 98.97% with 10-fold-cross validation. In addition, out of twelve, eight drugs have found no false-positive and false-negative bacterial strains. Conclusion. The ability to accurately detect antibiotic resistance could help clinicians make educated decisions about empiric therapy based on the local antibiotic resistance pattern. Moreover, infection prevention may have major consequences if such prescribing practices become widespread for human health.

Abstract:Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a global healthcare threat. To decrease the spread of AMR and associated mortality, methods for rapid selection of optimal antibiotic treatment are urgently needed. Machine learning (ML) models based on genomic data to predict resistant phenotypes can serve as a fast screening tool prior to phenotypic testing. Nonetheless, many existing ML methods lack interpretability. Therefore, we present a methodology for visualization of sequence space and AMR prediction based on the non‐linear dimensionality reduction method – generative topographic mapping (GTM). This approach, applied to AMR data of >5000 S. aureus isolates retrieved from the PATRIC database, yielded GTM models with reasonable accuracy for all drugs (balanced accuracy values ≥0.75). The Generative Topographic Maps (GTMs) represent data in the form of illustrative maps of the genomic space and allow for antibiotic‐wise comparison of resistant phenotypes. The maps were also found to be useful for the analysis of genetic determinants responsible for drug resistance. Overall, the GTM‐based methodology is a useful tool for both the illustrative exploration of the genomic sequence space and AMR prediction.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health challenge, undermining the efficacy of antimicrobial drugs against microorganisms like bacteria, fungi and viruses. Multidrug resistance (MDR) arises when microorganisms become resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents. The World Health Organisation classifies AMR bacteria into priority list – I (critical), II (high) and III (medium), prompting action from nearly 170 countries. Six priority bacterial strains account for over 70% of AMR-related fatalities, contributing to more than 1.3 million direct deaths annually and linked to over 5 million deaths globally. Enterobacteriaceae , including Escherichia coli , Salmonella enterica and Klebsiella pneumoniae , significantly contribute to AMR fatalities. This systematic literature review explores how machine learning (ML) and multitargeted drug design (MTDD) can combat AMR in Enterobacteriaceae . We followed PRISMA guidelines and comprehensively analysed current prospects and limitations by mining PubMed and Scopus literature databases. Innovative strategies integrating AI algorithms with advanced computational techniques allow for the analysis of vast datasets, identification of novel drug targets, prediction of resistance mechanisms, and optimisation of drug molecules to overcome resistance. Leveraging ML and MTDD is crucial for both advancing our fight against AMR in Enterobacteriaceae , and developing combination therapies that target multiple bacterial survival pathways, reducing the risk of resistance development.

Abstract:Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori, Hp) affects billions of people worldwide. However, the emerging resistance of Hp to antibiotics challenges the effectiveness of current treatments. Investigating the genotype-phenotype connection for Hp using next-generation sequencing could enhance our understanding of this resistance. Methods: In this study, we analyzed 52 Hp strains collected from various hospitals. The susceptibility of these strains to five antibiotics was assessed using the agar dilution assay. Whole-genome sequencing was then performed to screen the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genotypes of these Hp strains. To model the relationship between drug resistance and genotype, we employed univariate statistical tests, unsupervised machine learning, and supervised machine learning techniques, including the development of support vector machine models. Results: Our models for predicting Amoxicillin resistance demonstrated 66% sensitivity and 100% specificity, while those for Clarithromycin resistance showed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity. These results outperformed the known resistance sites for Amoxicillin (A1834G) and Clarithromycin (A2147), which had sensitivities of 22.2% and 87%, and specificities of 100% and 96%, respectively. Discussion: Our study demonstrates that predictive modeling using supervised learning algorithms with feature selection can yield diagnostic models with higher predictive power compared to models relying on single single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites. This approach significantly contributes to enhancing the precision and effectiveness of antibiotic treatment strategies for Hp infections. The application of whole-genome sequencing for Hp presents a promising pathway for advancing personalized medicine in this context.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) due to the misuse and overuse of antibiotics has become a critical threat to global public health. There is a dire need to forecast AMR to understand the underlying mechanisms of resistance for the development of effective interventions. This paper explores the capability of machine learning (ML) methods, particularly unsupervised learning methods, to enhance the understanding and prediction of AMR. It aims to determine the patterns from AMR gene data that are clinically relevant and, in public health, capable of informing strategies. Methods: We analyzed AMR gene data in the PanRes dataset by applying unsupervised learning techniques, namely K-means clustering and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). These techniques were applied to identify clusters based on gene length and distribution according to resistance class, offering insights into the resistance genes' structural and functional properties. Data preprocessing, such as filtering and normalization, was conducted prior to applying machine learning methods to ensure consistency and accuracy. Our methodology included the preprocessing of data and reduction of dimensionality to ensure that our models were both accurate and interpretable. Results: The unsupervised learning models highlighted distinct clusters of AMR genes, with significant patterns in gene length, including their associated resistance classes. Further dimensionality reduction by PCA allows for clearer visualizations of relationships among gene groupings. These patterns provide novel insights into the potential mechanisms of resistance, particularly the role of gene length in different resistance pathways. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the potential of ML, specifically unsupervised approaches, to enhance the understanding of AMR. The identified patterns in resistance genes could support clinical decision-making and inform public health interventions. However, challenges remain, particularly in integrating genomic data and ensuring model interpretability. Further research is needed to advance ML applications in AMR prediction and management.

Abstract:Salmonella spp., a leading cause of foodborne illness, is a formidable global menace due to escalating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The evaluation of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for antimicrobials is critical for characterizing AMR. The current whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based approaches for predicting MIC are hindered by both computational and feature identification constraints. We propose an innovative methodology called the “Genome Feature Extractor Pipeline” that integrates traditional machine learning (random forest, RF) with deep learning models (multilayer perceptron (MLP) and DeepLift) for WGS-based MIC prediction. We used a dataset from the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), comprising 4500 assembled genomes of nontyphoidal Salmonella, each annotated with MIC metadata for 15 antibiotics. Our pipeline involves the batch downloading of annotated genomes, the determination of feature importance using RF, Gini-index-based selection of crucial 10-mers, and their expansion to 20-mers. This is followed by an MLP network, with four hidden layers of 1024 neurons each, to predict MIC values. Using DeepLift, key 20-mers and associated genes influencing MIC are identified. The 10 most significant 20-mers for each antibiotic are listed, showcasing our ability to discern genomic features affecting Salmonella MIC prediction with enhanced precision. The methodology replaces binary indicators with k-mer counts, offering a more nuanced analysis. The combination of RF and MLP addresses the limitations of the existing WGS approach, providing a robust and efficient method for predicting MIC values in Salmonella that could potentially be applied to other pathogens.

Ticks and Borrelia: model systems for investigating pathogen-arthropod interactions.

Abstract:Blood-feeding arthropods transmit numerous types of infectious agent and parasite that have a tremendous impact on human health and mortality throughout the world. These vector-borne pathogens display a wide array of evolutionary patterns that allow them to infect and to be successfully transmitted by ticks, mites, and hematophagous insects. The vector's method of feeding, type of development, and host preference are also critical factors for the transfer of zoonotic agents from wild animal reservoirs to susceptible humans. Ticks are obligate blood-feeders in all life stages and biologically transmit many infectious agents. In North America, two ticks that are involved in the maintenance and transmission of pathogenic spirochetes include Ixodes scapularis (family Ixodidae) and Ornithodoros hermsi (family Argasidae). These ticks are the respective vectors of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and a relapsing fever spirochete, Borrelia hermsii. Little is known concerning how these and related species of Borrelia adapt to successfully alternate between warm-blooded vertebrates and ticks; however, the possibility that borrelial surface proteins are differentially expressed in their different hosts is an exciting area of current research.
Immunocytochemical identification of GtH1 and GtH2 cells during the temperature-sensitive period for sex determination in pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis.

Abstract:The ontogeny of gonadotropin 1 (GtH1) and 2 (GtH2) cells and its possible link to gonadal sex differentiation were studied in pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, by immunocytochemistry using anti-chum salmon beta-GtH1 and beta-GtH2 antisera. In adults, GtH1 cells were found in the proximalis pars distalls (PPD) close to the neurohypophysis, whereas GtH2 cells were identified surrounding GtH1 cells, at the external layer of the PPD and in the pars intermedia. Essentially the same distribution was observed in larvae. In pejerrey, the phenotypic sex is governed by the temperature during the critical period of sex determination (temperature-dependent sex determination, TSD). Female proportions vary gradually from 100% at 15-19 degrees to 0% at 29 degrees, and the critical time of TSD has been estimated to be 3-5, 2-4, and 1-4 weeks after hatching at 17, 19, and 27 degrees, respectively. Thus, the expression of both GtHs was examined weekly in larvae reared from hatching to week 11, at 17, 24, and 29 degrees. The proportion of females at 17, 24, and 29 degrees was, 100%, 78%, and 0%, respectively. Histological ovarian differentiation was noticed at 7 and 4 weeks at 17 and 24 degrees, whereas testicular differentiation occurred at 7 and 4 weeks at 24 and 29 degrees. GtH1 cells were first observed at week 3 at 29 degrees and at week 4 at 17 and 24 degrees. These cells increased in number until week 4 and then decreased, disappearing after week 6 at all temperature regimes. GtH2 cells appeared at week 2 at 24 and 29 degrees and at week 3 at 17 degrees. GtH2 cell number increased until week 3 at 29 degrees and until week 4 at 17 and 24 degrees and then temporarily decreased, thereafter increasing again. These results strongly suggest that GtH1 and GtH2 are expressed by different cells. The fact that GtH1 and GtH2 cells appear just before histological gonadal differentiation at all temperatures, together with the peak of GtH1 and GtH2 cell number during the temperature-sensitive period, suggests that GtHs are related to sex differentiation or TSD in O. bonariensis.
