Abstract:Background: Early recognition of cardiac arrest and prompt start of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) boost survival rates and reduce postarrest consequences. Little information is available about the fundamental CPR knowledge of healthcare workers who work with children in Ethiopia. Methods: All physicians, regardless of seniority, participated in this cross‐sectional survey from June to August 2022. They received a structured survey that was modified from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) test which was made up of 10 questions about participants' job experience and 25 multiple‐choice CPR knowledge questions. Data analysis was done using a multinomial logistic regression test with a p value of 0.05. Result: One hundred sixty‐eight doctors with various levels of seniority participated in this study. The participants included a male‐to‐female ratio of 1.3:1, a median age of 28 years, 92 (57.9%) male participants, and 124 (78%) participants with less than 5 years of clinical experience. Ninety‐seven participants, or 61%, had scored less than 75% whereas 13 (8.2%), participants, had good knowledge that is scoring above 75%. Participants who had training in CPR within the previous year showed significantly higher levels of knowledge than those who hadn't. Even though 90% of the participants claimed to have CPR knowledge, the majority of participants were found not to have below 75%. Conclusion: The study concludes that while many doctors believe they have adequate CPR knowledge, actual knowledge levels are insufficient. Staff should undergo regular certification and assessments to ensure they retain their resuscitation knowledge. This ongoing evaluation is crucial for maintaining high standards of care and preparedness in emergencies.

Evaluation of Comprehensive Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Training in Non-Medical Undergraduates

Abstract:Total 280 non-medical undergraduates (174 males and 106 females) were enrolled in the study from September 2015 to January 2016.Among all participants,132 received comprehensive cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training,including knowledge teaching,video playing and simulation practice (study group),and 148 received knowledge teaching and simulation practice only (control group).Changes of CPR knowledge,skills and willingness were evaluated before and after training,and compared between two groups.The theory scores were increased after the training in both groups (study group: 87.7±5.6 vs.47.9±4.7,P<0.001;control group: 71.6±5.2 vs.48.4±4.9,P<0.001);there was no significantly difference between two groups before the training (P>0.05),however,there was significant difference after the training (P<0.001).The qualified rates of CPR skills were increased after the training in both groups (study group 81.8% vs.26.5%,P<0.001;control group: 68.2% vs.26.4%,P<0.001);there was no significant difference in qualified rates before the training between two groups (P>0.05),however,there was significant difference after the training (P<0.01).The willingness rates of performing CPR were increased after the training in both groups (study group: 64.4% vs.13.6%,P<0.001;control group: 46.6% vs.14.2%,P<0.001);there was no significant difference in willingness level before the training between two groups (P>0.05),however,there was significantly difference after the training (P<0.01).The study shows that comprehensive training can enhance CPR knowledge,skills and willingness for non-medical undergraduates,indicating that it may also be effective for other social groups.

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a critical skill within basic life support (BLS), is essential for medical professionals in cases of cardiac or respiratory failure. This study aims to evaluate the BLS knowledge and practical application among healthcare professionals at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, to enhance training outcomes. Objective: The primary objective was to assess the knowledge and practical skills of BLS among medical and paramedical staff at Ziauddin Hospital and identify gaps in training to improve emergency response effectiveness. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved 400 healthcare workers from various departments of Ziauddin Hospital between February and April 2024. Participants were selected to represent a diverse group of doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff. Data was collected using a standardized questionnaire based on European standards and guidelines from the American Heart Association and the Resuscitation Council. The questionnaire included both theoretical and practical aspects of BLS. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25, with frequencies, percentages, and chi-square tests applied to assess associations between variables. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ziauddin Hospital Ethical Review Committee, ensuring adherence to the Declaration of Helsinki. Results: The study revealed that 80% of participants knew the abbreviation for BLS. However, only 26.8% correctly identified the immediate action for an unconscious victim. The correct site for chest compressions in adults and infants was known by 88% and 84.5% of participants, respectively. Awareness of AEDs and EMS was high, at 95% and 93%. Practical skills were notably weaker, with significant variability in emergency responses: 26.8% would give two breaths immediately to an unconscious victim, and 76% incorrectly chose to compress the abdomen for a victim submerged in water. The mean age of participants was 27±4.9 years, with a gender distribution of 51.5% female and 48.5% male. Conclusion: While healthcare professionals at Ziauddin Hospital possess strong theoretical knowledge of BLS, there are significant gaps in practical application, especially in emergency scenarios. To improve patient outcomes in emergencies, more practical, scenario-based training is necessary. This study underscores the need for ongoing, hands-on training sessions to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.

Abstract:Background: Health assistants play a crucial role in healthcare delivery, particularly in remote and rural areas of Nepal. They should have adequate lifesaving and resuscitation skills. Therefore, assessing their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) knowledge is essential. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of CPR among health assistants (HAs) in Nepal and explore if there were variations in knowledge scores based on the demographic characteristics of the participants. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional research design was used. The study population included HAs registered with the Nepal Health Professional Council (NHPC) who completed three years of training. Non-probability convenience sampling was employed. Data was collected using an online survey based on the 2020 American Heart Association guidelines. Demographic information and participants' knowledge levels were noted. Results: The study involved 500 HAs, with the majority being male and working in government hospitals. Most participants were from Madhesh Province, and the median age was 26 years. Only a fraction of the participants had received training in CPR, and none of them had ever performed CPR. The median knowledge scores were higher among males and among respondents from Madhesh, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudhurpaschim provinces. The HA's knowledge of the correct depth of CPR compression for children (21%) and infants (17.4%) was limited. CPR scores were different according to variables like training, theory understanding, and practice duration, among others. The findings highlighted the need for more practical training and regular refresher courses to enhance HAs ability to provide life-saving interventions. Conclusion: The study revealed less CPR knowledge and a lack of practical training among HAs in Nepal. To improve healthcare outcomes, providing practical training and ongoing education on CPR is crucial. The findings can contribute to curriculum development and policy changes in healthcare delivery.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is regarded as the most important skill of the medical staff who is required to be aware of the latest changes to the CPR guidelines so that they can take the most effective actions in the critical conditions of CPR. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the levels of CPR literacy among the personnel of universities of medical sciences based in Kermanshah and Khuzestan provinces based on the latest 2015 CPR guidelines in 2019.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study, 525 subjects were selected as the sample population using the two-stage cluster sampling. For data collection, a researcher-made questionnaire was used, whose content validity and reliability were confirmed (r = 0.71). The study screened the data received and analyzed valid data set through the ttest and Spearman's correlation coefficient by incorporating SPSS Statistics software version 23.0. In addition, P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: The 2015 CPR literacy levels of the samples were as follows: excellent (85 subjects or 16.2%), good (404 subjects or 77%), and average (36 subjects or 6.9%). The results of Pearson's correlation coefficient revealed a weak and inverse relationship between the levels of CPR literacy and the age of samples (r = -0.092) and work experience (-0.029), which were statistically significant. In addition, the results of Mann-Whitney U-test demonstrated that the level of CPR literacy among the personnel of Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences exceeded that among the personnel of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: It is suggested that in retraining the nursing and paramedical personnel, CPR be carried out with more emphasis on the changes introduced in this guideline compared to that in 2010, including esophageal tracheal airway, reasons for the cessation of CPR, intraosseous infusion, and induced hypothermia.

Abstract:Background Basic Life Support (BLS) is a sequence of care provided to patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, or airway obstruction. Its main purpose is to maintain the airway, breathing, and circulation through CPR. This review aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of Health Professionals’ knowledge and practice on basic life support in Ethiopia. Method Eligible primary studies were accessed from international database (PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari databases) and grey literatures found in online repositories. The required data were extracted from those studies and exported to Stata 17 for analysis. A weighted inverse-variance random-effects model and Der Simonian-Laird estimation method were used to compute the overall pooled prevalence of Health Professional’s knowledge, practice of basic life support and its predictors. Variations across the included studies were checked using forest plot, funnel plot, I 2 statistics, and Egger’s test. Result A total of 5,258 Health Professionals were included from 11 studies. The pooled prevalence of knowledge and practice outcomes on basic life support in Ethiopia were 47.6 (95% CI: 29.899, 65.300, I 2 : 99.21%) and 44.42 (95% CI: 16.42, 72.41, I 2 : 99.69) respectively. Educational status of the Professional’s was significantly associated with knowledge outcome. Those who had degree and above were 1.9 times (AOR: 1.90 (1.24, 2.56)) more likely knowledgeable on basic life support than under degree. Conclusion The overall pooled estimates of Health Professionals knowledge and practice on basic life support was considerably low. The educational status of the Health Professionals was significantly associated with knowledge outcome. The Health Professionals and responsible stakeholders should focus on the basic life support at Health Institutions. The professionals should advance their knowledge and skill on basic life support for the patients.

Abstract:Objectives: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a necessary life-saving emergency intervention for patients with cardiac arrest and other medical conditions. The study's primary objective was to qualitatively explore nurses' perceptions of the quality of adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation in Ghana. Methods: An exploratory descriptive qualitative study was conducted among 13 purposively sampled nurses in Ghana. We collected thirteen face-to-face and telephone interviews using a semi-structured interview guide. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using the thematic analysis approach recommended by Braun and Clarke. Results: Data analysis revealed that nurses were filled with positive emotions when patients regained consciousness following resuscitation. When the otherwise happens, they tend to become tortured psychologically and filled with negative emotions. Besides, environmental factors such as the time of initiating CPR following a cardiac arrest, the availability and appropriateness of equipment and medications, workplace ergonomics, and institutional regulations affected the quality of resuscitation practices of nurses. Participants perceived that attitudes of condemnation, prejudice, apathy and skills deficiency also impacted the quality of resuscitation practices. Significant aspects of self-reported behavioural competence that affected resuscitation were knowledge and skills of CPR, confidence in initiating CPR, and the need for effort maximisation. Conclusion: This study revealed several non-medical factors that influenced the resuscitation practices of nurses from their perspective. Nurses need to maximise their effort toward seeking further education in speciality areas such as emergency nursing and critical care nursing to guide their CPR practices and other newly emerging evidence-based protocols.

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical skill for healthcare professionals, including physical therapy students. Despite its importance, there is a gap in research regarding the CPR knowledge of these future professionals. This study aims to assess the level of CPR knowledge and attitudes among final-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the CPR knowledge, confidence in performing CPR, and attitudes towards CPR training among final-year DPT students in Karachi. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Data were collected from 101 final-year DPT students using a validated questionnaire adapted from previous studies. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23, focusing on descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage. Results: While all participants were aware of CPR, only 49.5% believed their knowledge was adequate. About half of the students had previously taken a CPR training course, yet only 27.7% had done so within the past year. In situations requiring CPR, 50% of those who had faced such scenarios did not perform it, primarily due to nervousness. Approximately 69.3% knew the correct sequence of CPR, and 85% were willing to perform CPR on anyone if necessary. Conclusion: The study reveals a significant gap in confidence and practical knowledge of CPR among final-year DPT students. Despite a high level of initial awareness, there is a need for regular, updated training to build proficiency and confidence in CPR. Integrating CPR training into the DPT curriculum and promoting regular retraining could be key strategies for improving CPR skills among future physical therapists.
Assessment of nurses knowledge and skills following cardiopulmonary resuscitation training at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Uganda

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is considered a core emergency skill in which all health care professionals must be proficient. CPR remains a new procedure in developing compared to develop countries. The objective of this study was to assess Nurses Knowledge and Skills following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.METHODS: A prospective pre/post intervention design was adopted. CPR knowledge and skills of 32 nurses from MRRH were assed using two tools. Tool I consisted of 17 item of multiple choice questions that assessed CPR knowledge. Tool II involved an observation checklist of 15-point skills questions. A penalty score of 5 or 10 or 20 was set for each question, based on the guideline.RESULTS: The average score prior to instruction was 53.8 for knowledge and posttest 82.5, and for skills was 46 pre-instruction and 81.5 post instruction. There was a statistically significant (p < 0.001) improvement in the CPR knowledge and (p = 0.02) for CPR skills. The percentage change in respondent's knowledge and skills ranged from 16.8% to137.2% with a mean of 59.9% for knowledge and from 19.18% to 2115.6% with a mean of 159.8% for the skills assessment.CONCLUSION: Respondents had inadequate CPR knowledge and skills at pretest. The study revealed statistically significant improvement in both knowledge and skills of CPR for all nurses post training. There was a significant change in nurses' skills than in knowledge post training.
Awareness, Knowledge, and Attitudes Regarding Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Case of Cardiac Arrest among the Population in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Introduction: For cardiac arrest victims, providing high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a fundamental component of initial care, especially in out-of-hospital settings. We sought to assess the knowledge of nonmedically trained individuals about CPR in case of cardiac arrest in the population of Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey containing 22 questions was administered to individuals aged ≥ 18 years who were not health-care providers. The sample comprised residents of Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The survey included knowledge about the signs of cardiac arrest, previous experiences with CPR, knowledge of basic life support (BLS), and concerns related to CPR. Results: This study examined responses from 480 people to assess their knowledge of CPR. More than one-half were female, and only 33% were male. Only 36.04% reported having received CPR training. In the event of a family member's cardiac arrest, more than 90% state that they would perform CPR. If a family member suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, more than 70% would call an ambulance immediately, whereas only 48% would call an ambulance if the same thing happened to a stranger. Fear of making a mistake was the most common reason for not performing CPR (70.63%). The media was the most common source of CPR training. Women were more aware of the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest than men. Women were also more likely than men to perform CPR or call for assistance. Furthermore, women were significantly more likely than men to discontinue CPR on a sudden cardiac arrest patient for fear of stopping a working heart or being contaminated by blood or vomit. Few respondents were willing to undergo CPR training; students, homemakers, and retired people were more willing to be trained in CPR than others. Conclusion: In the Saudi Arabian province of Jazan, nonmedically trained people demonstrated a low level of CPR training and knowledge. We believe that making BLS courses available to the general public will increase CPR awareness and understanding among adults and increase survival rates in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
The relationship between knowledge and self-efficacy of nurses regarding early initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated defibrillation in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation are the most common procedures performed by nurses as the first responders to cardiac arrest patients in the hospital setting. Therefore, nurses are demanded to have high skills for effective performance. Self-efficacy and knowledge are considered significant factors affecting early initiation of CPR and automated defibrillation. However, previous studies mostly focused on nursing students instead of frontline nurses. Objective: This research aimed to assess the relationship between nurses' knowledge and self-efficacy regarding the early initiation of CPR and automated defibrillation of cardiac arrest patients. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational survey. Using convenience sampling, two hundred eighty-seven nurses working in critical areas and inpatient and outpatient departments, King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Saudi Arabia, were selected. Resuscitation Knowledge and Self-Efficacy Scales were used for data collection (using Google Form) from November 2020 to January 2021. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were used for data analysis. Results: Overall, 61.3% of participants had moderate knowledge (13.659 ± 2.175), and 63.8% had high self-efficacy (44.627 ± 58.397). The highest domain of self-efficacy was responding and rescuing, while the lowest domain was debriefing and recording. There was a significant positive relationship between knowledge and self-efficacy (p <0.001; r = 0.207). Conclusion: The positive relationship explained a high level of self-efficacy if there was a high level of knowledge. Thus, it is recommended that nursing programs apply CPR and automated defibrillation curricula during nurses' internships, clear policies and procedures about CPR and automated defibrillation, continual updates about CPR and automated defibrillation, and knowledge and continuance training (on-job-training) about CPR and automated defibrillation, which can enhance and improve knowledge and self-efficacy among health care workers, especially for nurses.

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving operation performed in an emergency when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR following a cardiac arrest can double or triple the odds of survival. The American Heart Association welcomes you to join us in our vision of a future without cardiac arrest. In the United States, 350,000 individuals die from cardiac arrest each year. CPR keeps the blood pumping and the body supplied with oxygen until specialized treatment is available. There is normally enough oxygen left in the blood to support the brain and other organs for a few minutes. Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation among diploma nursing students. Methods: Descriptive research design was used. This study included 60 students. Knowledge and practice checklist was used to assess the knowledge and practice and chi-square test used to see the association between dependent and independent variables. Result: In this study, level of knowledge regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation pretest level poor knowledge 23(38.3%), poor knowledge 19(31.7%) and good knowledge 18(30%) . level of skills regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation pretest level skills 60(100%) poor skills 0(0.0%) good skills. Age, Gender, religion, Course of study, Family history of cardiac disease, Aware about cardio pulmonary resuscitation, source of information regarding cardio pulmonary resuscitation, Classes on cardio pulmonary resuscitation within the last 6 months had shown no statistically significant association with the pretest levels of skills regarding cardio pulmonary resuscitation among students. Conclusion: Despite the fact that more than half of students had good knowledge, so students required proper skill development about cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most evolving areas of saving actions that improve the survival rates following cardiac arrest and educating high school students can play a dynamic role in case of emergencies in society. Education of school students in CPR is a strategic goal for the improvement of bystander CPR in rural society. If adolescents were trained to perform CPR during school physical education hours, this may be a cost-effective approach to CPR training. This study is conducted to assess the effectiveness of health education in the improvement of knowledge of CPR among school-going adolescents. Aim: To assess the effect of a training program on students’ knowledge of CPR. Objective: (A) To determine the background knowledge of high school students about cardiac arrest and basic life support in adult victims of cardiac arrest. (B) To determine the association between knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and skills with selected demographic variables. Materials and methods: This is a quasi-experimental study conducted among adolescents aged 13–15 years attending schools in rural areas of South India. The study was conducted between Jan 2022 and Jan 2023. 680 students were included in this study. The universal sampling method was used to enumerate the participants to reduce the impact of the dropout rate. The data was collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire by interview method. Basic teaching of CPR for the participants included 2 hours of oral teaching using lecture method, question and answer discussion method as well as 2 hours of practical session using demonstration, practice on a manikin, provision of feedback and correction of errors. Results: A total of 680 participants were grouped into three categories according to their knowledge scores: (A) fair, (B) Moderate, and (C) Good scores obtained in pre-training observation and post-training observation. Initially, there were 666 (97.9%) in the fair category, most of them improved after training as seen in the post-training observation results, with 97 (14.3%) persons in the fair (A) category. There was not a single student in the good category of the score before intervention, which increased to 665 (45.6%) in the good category of knowledge. The mean score of pre-training is 2.55, and the post-training score is significantly increased to 9.5. Conclusion: An improvement is observed in knowledge of CPR post-training with planned teaching and demonstration. Hence, this method can be considered a logical solution for improving knowledge about CPR in cases of emergency life-saving skills in a particular group of society.

Abstract:Immediate resuscitation is crucial for the survival of a patient with cardiac arrest. Research has suggested that self-led bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is significantly associated with favourable neurological outcomes for patients. Furthermore, medical students play an important role in providing public CPR training to the community. This study aims to evaluate the effects of a CPR training programmes and a public training event on the knowledge, attitudes, and perceived competency towards CPR among medical students. The quasi-experimental study was conducted among the medical students in clinical years studying at a private medical institution in Malaysia. The intervention group received CPR training for two sessions and participated as trainers in a community-training event; the control group was excluded from these activities. A total of 106 students (intervention group, n = 51; control group, n = 55) participated in this study. The total knowledge score (5.24 ± 1.67 vs 3.75 ± 1.22, P < 0.001), attitude score (22.38 ± 3.67 vs 20.82 ± 2.33, P = 0.011), and perceived competencies to perform CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) (7.22 ± 2.33 vs 4.93 ± 2.40, P < 0.001) were significantly higher among the participants in the intervention group compared to those in the control group after the intervention. Meanwhile, concerns regarding initiating CPR was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group (12.44 ± 5.15 vs 9.55 ± 3.96, P = 0.002). The results suggested that CPR training is beneficial for students and should be organised regularly. In addition to providing physical skills training, such sessions should explain legal implications of initiating CPR and should encourage and assure students to do so in case of an emergency.
Systematic review on knowledge and skills level among nurses following cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr) training

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Although millions of healthcare providers and lay providers are trained globally in CPR each year, there are major gaps in delivering adequate medical emergency care such as poor quality CPR in the hospitals or none performance of CPR in out of hospital settings for people with cardiac arrest. Objective This systematic review aim to highlight the effect of training on knowledge and skills retention as well as the effect of different methods of training on knowledge and skills Methods The review used six online databases: Scopus, ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, Medline and reviewed reference citations for additional studies. Systematic analysis was use in excluding articles from the database by the latest 2015 American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, known as Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) for the evaluation of knowledge and skills retention. Results A total of 71,671 possible articles were registered in six databases, with 331 articles found meeting eligibility criteria. And only 20 were finally included that met all the qualifying criteria for this systemic analysis. Most research used multi-choice questionnaires to assess retention of both knowledge and skills. From the pretest to the posttest, studies have shown that knowledge or skill rates differ and decrease from 6 weeks to 2 years after training. Between the reviewed papers, significant variations in retaining knowledge and skills were found between instructor-led training and other forms of teaching methods. Conclusion Between the pre-test and post-test outcomes, knowledge and skills have shown a substantial overall improvement in acquisition and retention. However, skills were observed to decay faster than knowledge. Skills start to decay as early as 2 weeks whereas knowledge retention start to decline on average between 1 month and 6 month after BLS/CPR training. Most of the articles showed that other forms of teaching methods are also as effective as the instructor led/traditional teaching methods in knowledge and skills levels among nurses. Therefore, future research should concentrate on the ideal timeline needed after initial training for the re-certification of the BLS/CPR.
Assessing Attitudes and Perceptions of High-risk, Low-resource Communities towards Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Public-access Defibrillation

Abstract:Background: Layperson cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use are vital for improving survival rates after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), yet their application varies by community demographics. We evaluated the concerns and factors influencing willingness to perform CPR and use AEDs among laypersons in high-risk, low-resource communities. Methods: From April 2022 to March 2024, laypersons in Northern Manhattan's Community District 12 completed surveys assessing their attitudes toward CPR and AED use before attending Hands-Only CPR training. Fisher's Exact Test assessed differences in concerns and willingness to perform CPR and AED use across racial-ethnic groups and compared low-resource communities with high-resource groups consisting of non-clinical staff across eight ambulatory sites. Results: Among 669 respondents, 64% identified as Hispanic, 58% were under 40, and 67% were female. Significant knowledge gaps were identified: 62% had never learned CPR, and 77% were unfamiliar with AEDs. Common concerns included fear of incorrect performance (67%), causing harm (56%), and legal repercussions (53%). Willingness to perform CPR was most influenced by familiarity with the victim (55% family vs. 67% non-family). The main barrier to AED use was a lack of operational knowledge (66%). Non-Hispanic Black participants expressed significantly greater concerns than their non-Hispanic White and Hispanic counterparts. Participants in high-resource settings (n=309) showed higher CPR and AED training rates with similar concerns. Conclusions: Concerns regarding CPR and AED use stem from a lack of confidence and training. Targeted, culturally sensitive community interventions are essential to address these barriers, enhance preparedness, and improve OHCA survival rates.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the awareness, attitude and knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among university-enrolled medical and non-medical undergraduate students of Pakistan. Methods: Cross-sectional online survey-based study was conducted across institutes in Pakistan from December, 2022 to January, 2023. The study involved university-enrolled undergraduate students across the country. The structured questionnaire was disseminated via Google forms. For statistical analysis, SPSS version 20 was used to analyze the data by applying independent sample t-tests and ANOVA. Results: A total of 249 responses were received. After the exclusion of two responses, the overall awareness score of participants was found to be 2.49 ± 1.33, attitude score of 4.09 ± 1.74, and knowledge score of 3.51 ± 2.13. Female respondents, medical students, unmarried (single), private institutes, and respondents with educated parents achieved relatively higher scores. The overall difference in awareness scores among different regions of Pakistan was also significant (p <0.05). Gender, region, and parental literacy rate also showed effects on participants' basic life support (BLS) and CPR knowledge (p <0.05). Conclusions: Overall knowledge and awareness were unsatisfactory and inadequate in university-enrolled undergraduate students, with no one getting a complete score on very basic knowledge questions. Abstract:The knowledge level and educational experience of high school students on CPR, which can contribute to saving more lives and increasing the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients by applying CPR when students face cardiac arrest patients, was grasped. This study was attempted to provide basic data for policy establishment that includes the contents of CPR in the high school curriculum in the future. Convenience sampling was conducted on 129 female high school students attending Y girls' high school located in G region and C city, and the survey was conducted from November 1 to November 30, 2021. A structured questionnaire consisting of 3 questions for general characteristics, 1 question for subjective awareness of CPR knowledge, 8 questions related to CPR knowledge, and 16 questions related to grasping CPR educational experience was used. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA analysis were applied to the final 120 responses using SPSS WIN 25.0. The female high school students scored an average of 5.57 points out of 8 points, and their knowledge of basic life support was moderate. Looking at the results of knowledge about CPR by item, the minimum correct answer rate was higher than 60.0% for 7 out of 8 items, but the breathing check method was the lowest at 9.2%. 96.7% of the students received training on CPR. As for the place where they were educated, school was 95.7%, student group activities (clubs) 7.8%, and fire station 3.4%. The total number of times of training was 3 times or more, 47.4%, 1 time, 34.5%, and the total training time was 3 hours or more, 48.2%. If education is opened in the future, schools (46.7%), Korea Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Association (27.5%), and fire stations (13.3%) were the preferred educational institutions. The difference in CPR knowledge according to the subject's grade, religion, and the presence or absence of heart disease among family or friends was not statistically significant. When integrating the results of this study and previous studies, it was confirmed that the students' ability to use CPR and the use of an automatic defibrillator was at a low level, although CPR education was being conducted in schools due to the revision of the School Health Act in 2014, and countermeasures are needed. In particular, it is necessary to prepare improvement methods such as strengthening practical education. It is necessary to clarify first aid education regulations such as CPR for students, expand CPR practice including AED practice, expand supply of AED and CPR manikin for practice, and strengthen education capacity of health teachers. And continuous repetitive education should be conducted according to the CPR guidelines that are revised every 5 years.

Abstract:BackgroundBurn injuries are thought to be preventable but are still a prevalent global health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It continues to remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Proper knowledge about burn first aid minimizes the overall impact of the injury.PurposeThis study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward burn first aid and its associated factors among caregivers attending burn units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021/22.MethodsA hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among caregivers of burn patients attending Yekatit 12 hospital medical college and Addis Ababa Burn Emergency and Trauma (AaBET) hospital burn units. A total of 305 caregivers were recruited by a simple random sampling method from both hospitals. Data was collected using a standard interviewer-administrated questionnaire, cleaned, coded, and entered into EPI data version 6, and then exported to SPSS version 26 for further analysis. The generated data were compiled by frequency tables, charts, and graphs. A logistic regression model was used to measure the association between independent versus outcome variables, considering the AOR, 95% CI, and p < 0.05 as significant for all the independent variables.ResultA total of 305 participants responded to this study. Among these, the majority, 185(60.7%) of caregivers were females, while 120(39.3%) were Males. The main source of knowledge for those who had previous information on a burn and its first aid treatment were families, friends, colleagues, and guardians. A significant portion of 246(80.7%) respondents did not take any form of burn first aid training. The study indicates that 202(66.2%) and 195(63.9%) of the study participants have poor knowledge and practice, respectively, despite the majority. 225(73.8%) of responders have a favorable attitude regarding burn first aid.Conclusion and recommendationThis study showed an explicit knowledge and practice gap among caregivers towards burn first aid even though the majorities have a favorable attitude. Developing an effective nationwide burn prevention program and early burn first aid treatment in Ethiopia and promoting a consistent guideline for burn first aid.

Abstract:CONTEXT: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency cardiovascular care guidelines are periodically renewed and published by the American Heart Association. Formal training programs are conducted based on these guidelines. Despite widespread training CPR is often poorly performed. Hospital educators spend a significant amount of time and money in training health professionals and maintaining basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) skills among them. However, very little data are available in the literature highlighting the long-term impact of these training.AIMS: To evaluate the impact of formal certified CPR training program on the knowledge and skill of CPR among nurses, to identify self-reported outcomes of attempted CPR and training needs of nurses.SETTING AND DESIGN: Tertiary care hospital, Prospective, repeated-measures design.SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A series of certified BLS and ACLS training programs were conducted during 2010 and 2011. Written and practical performance tests were done. Final testing was undertaken 3-4 years after training. The sample included all available, willing CPR certified nurses and experience matched CPR noncertified nurses.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: SPSS for Windows version 21.0.RESULTS: The majority of the 206 nurses (93 CPR certified and 113 noncertified) were females. There was a statistically significant increase in mean knowledge level and overall performance before and after the formal certified CPR training program (P = 0.000). However, the mean knowledge scores were equivalent among the CPR certified and noncertified nurses, although the certified nurses scored a higher mean score (P = 0.140).CONCLUSIONS: Formal certified CPR training program increases CPR knowledge and skill. However, significant long-term effects could not be found. There is a need for regular and periodic recertification.
