Abstract:Molecules containing a lanthanide atom have sets of electronic states arising from excitation of an inner-shell electron. These states have received little attention, but are thought to play an important role in laser cooling of such molecules and may be a useful resource for testing fundamental physics. We study a series of inner-shell excited states in YbF using resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionisation spectroscopy. We investigate the excited states of lowest energy, 8474, 9013 and 9090 cm$^{-1}$ above the ground state, all corresponding to the configuration 4f$^{13}$6s$^{2}$ ${}^{2}F_{7/2}$ of the Yb$^+$ ion. They are metastable, since they have no electric dipole allowed transitions to the ground state. We also characterize a state at 31050 cm$^{-1}$ that is easily excited from both the ground and metastable states, which makes it especially useful for this spectroscopic study. Finally, we study a state at 48729 cm$^{-1}$, which is above the ionization limit and features strong auto-ionizing resonances that prove useful for efficient detection of the molecules and for identifying the rotational quantum number of each line in the spectrum. We resolve the rotational structures of all these states and find that they can all be described by a very simple model based on Hund's case (c). Our study provides information necessary for laser slowing and magneto-optical trapping of YbF, which is an important species for testing fundamental physics. We also consider whether the low-lying inner-shell states may themselves be useful as probes of the electron's electric dipole moment or of varying fundamental constants, since they are long-lived states in a laser-coolable molecule featuring closely-spaced levels of opposite parity.

Abstract:The energetic disorder induced by fluctuating liquid environments acts in opposition to the precise control required for coherence-based sensing. Overcoming fluctuations requires a protected quantum subspace that only weakly interacts with the local environment. We report a ytterbium complex that exhibited an ultranarrow absorption linewidth in solution at room temperature with a full width at half maximum of 0.625 milli-electron volts. Using spectral hole burning, we measured an even narrower linewidth of 410 pico-electron volts at 77 kelvin. Narrow linewidths allowed low-field magnetic circular dichroism at room temperature, used to sense Earth-scale magnetic fields. These results demonstrated that ligand protection in lanthanide complexes could substantially diminish electronic state fluctuations. We have termed this system an "atomlike molecular sensor" (ALMS) and proposed approaches to improve its performance.

Abstract:Rare-earth ions are promising solid state systems to build light-matter interfaces at the quantum level. This relies on their potential to show narrow optical homogeneous linewidths or, equivalently, long-lived optical quantum states. In this letter, we report on europium molecular crystals that exhibit linewidths in the 10s of kHz range, orders of magnitude narrower than other molecular centers. We harness this property to demonstrate efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light using an atomic frequency comb, and optical control of ion-ion interactions towards implementation of quantum gates. These results illustrate the utility of rare-earth molecular crystals as a new platform for photonic quantum technologies that combines highly coherent emitters with the unmatched versatility in composition, structure, and integration capability of molecular materials.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image
Single ion spectroscopy of four metastable state clear-out transitions in Yb II: isotope shifts and hyperfine structure

Abstract:We present spectroscopic data for four metastable state clear-out transitions between 399 nm and 412 nm for all even long-lived isotopes of Yb$^+$ as well as their hyperfine structure in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. The strong $^2 \rm{D}_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^1[1/2]_{1/2}$ transition at 412 nm represents an attractive alternative for the standard 935 nm repumper used in cooling and trapping experiments, while the transition to the $^3[3/2]_{3/2}$ state at 411 nm clears out the $^2 $F$_{7/2}$ state, for which typically 638 nm or 760 nm are used. These two alternative transitions simplify the experimental setup by removing the need for infrared optics to cool and manipulate Yb$^+$ and may be of particular interest when considering integrated photonics solutions. We also present data for the transitions $^2 $D$_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^3[1/2]_{3/2}$ at 399 nm, and $^2 $D$_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^1[5/2]_{5/2}$ at 410 nm including decay branching ratios of the excited states.

Highly Near-Ir Emissive Ytterbium(iii) Complexes with Unprecedented Quantum Yields.

Abstract:The design of highly near-infrared (NIR) emissive lanthanide (Ln) complexes is challenging, owing to the lack of molecular systems with a high sensitization efficiency and the difficulty of achieving a large intrinsic quantum yield. Previous studies have reported success in optimizing individual factors and achieving high overall quantum yields, with the best yield being 12% for Yb(iii). Herein we report a series of highly NIR emissive Yb complexes, in which the Yb is sandwiched between an octafluorinated porphyrinate antenna ligand and a deuterated Kläui ligand, which allowed optimization of two factors in the same system, and one of the complexes had an unprecedented quantum yield of 63% (estimated uncertainty 15%) in CD2Cl2 with a long lifetime (τobs) of 714 μs. Systematic analysis of the structure-photophysical properties relationship suggested that porphyrinates are effective antenna ligands with a sensitization efficiency up to ca. 100% and that replacement of the high-energy C-H oscillators in porphyrinate and Kläui ligands significantly improves the intrinsic quantum yield up to 75% (τobs/τrad), both of which contribute to enhancing the NIR emission intensity of Yb(iii) up to 25-fold. Besides the high luminescence efficiency, these Yb complexes have other attractive features such as excitation in the visible range and large extinction coefficients which make these Yb(iii) complexes outstanding optical materials in the NIR region.
Optical coherence and spin population dynamics in $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ single crystals

Abstract:$^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$-doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystals are a promising platform for optical quantum memories in long-distance quantum communications. The relevance of this material lies in $^{171}$Yb long optical and spin coherence times, along with a large hyperfine splitting, enabling long quantum storage over large bandwidths. Mechanisms affecting the optical decoherence are however not precisely known, especially since low-temperature measurements have so far focused on the 2 to 4 K range. In this work, we performed two- and three-pulse photon echoes and spectral hole burning to determine optical homogeneous linewidths in two 171 Yb:YSO crystals doped at 2 and 10 ppm. Experiments were performed in the 40 mK to 18 K temperature range, leading to linewidths between 320 Hz, among the narrowest reported for rare-earth ions, and several MHz. Our results show that above 6 K the homogeneous linewidth is mainly due to an elastic two-phonon process which results in a slow broadening with temperature, the homogeneous linewidth reaching only 25 kHz at 10 K. At lower temperatures, interactions with $^{89}$Yb nuclear spin-flips, paramagnetic defects or impurities, and also Yb-Yb interactions for the higher concentrated crystal, are likely the main limiting factor to the homogeneous linewidth. In particular, we conclude that the direct effect of spin and optical excited state lifetime is a minor contribution to optical decoherence in the whole temperature range studied. Our results indicate possible paths and regimes for further decreasing the homogeneous linewidths or maintaining narrow lines at higher $^{171}$Yb concentration.

Abstract:We experimentally determine the absolute frequencies and hyperfine splittings of the 6s6p 3 P 0,2 − 6s7s 3 S 1 transitions of ultracold 171Yb atoms in an optical lattice. A frequency comb referenced to an ultrastable optical cavity is used to measure the electric-dipole transition frequencies. With the normalized shelving detection technique, about 12 MHz and 10 MHz linewidth of atomic spectra are obtained, respectively, which is some greater than the natural linewidth of 1.5 MHz and 5.9 MHz and is limited by the broadening from the probe and lattice light. By reference to our 171Yb 6 s 2 1 S 0 − 6s6p 3 P 0 clock, the absolute frequencies are found to be 461861338.03 (0.21) MHz and 461871596.07 (0.31) MHz for the 6s6p 3 P 0 − 6s7s 3 S 1 (F = 1/2 and F = 3/2) transitions, which are more accurate than the previous measurement by one order of magnitude. For the 6s6p 3 P 2 (F = 3/2 and F = 5/2) − 6s7s 3 S 1 (F = 1/2 and F = 3/2) transitions, the measured frequencies are 389257019.71 (0.65) MHz, 389267277.10 (0.37) MHz and 389260569.95 (0.89) MHz, respectively, which are the first measurements to our knowledge. Furthermore, the hyperfine constants for the 6s6p 3 P 2 and 6s7s 3 S 1 states are determined to be 2682.86(0.38) MHz and 6838.69(0.25) MHz, both of which agree well with other recent experimental results.

Abstract:Rare-earth ions in crystals are a proven solid-state platform for quantum technologies in the ensemble regime and attractive for new opportunities at the single ion level. Among the trivalent rare earths, ${}^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{3+}$ is unique in that it possesses a single 4f excited-state manifold and is the only paramagnetic isotope with a nuclear spin of 1/2. In this work, we present measurements of the optical and spin properties of $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:YVO$_4$ to assess whether this distinct energy level structure can be harnessed for quantum interfaces. The material was found to possess large optical absorption compared to other rare-earth-doped crystals owing to the combination of narrow inhomogeneous broadening and a large transition oscillator strength. In moderate magnetic fields, we measure optical linewidths less than 3 kHz and nuclear spin linewidths less than 50 Hz. We characterize the excited-state hyperfine and Zeeman interactions in this system, which enables the engineering of a $\Lambda$-system and demonstration of all-optical coherent control over the nuclear spin ensemble. Given these properties, $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:YVO$_4$ has significant potential for building quantum interfaces such as ensemble-based memories, microwave-to-optical transducers, and optically addressable single rare-earth-ion spin qubits.

Abstract:Nano-structuring impurity-doped crystals affects the phonon density of states and thereby modifies the atomic dynamics induced by interaction with phonons. We propose the use of nano-structured materials in the form of powders or phononic bandgap crystals to enable or improve persistent spectral hole-burning and coherence for inhomogeneously broadened absorption lines in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. This is crucial for applications such as ultra-precise radio-frequency spectrum analyzers and optical quantum memories. As an example, we discuss how phonon engineering can enable spectral hole burning in erbium-doped materials operating in the convenient telecommunication band, and present simulations for density of states of nano-sized powders and phononic crystals for the case of Y2SiO5, a widely-used material in current quantum memory research.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the 4 f 146s6p (3P2) -4 f135d6s2 (3P2*) transition in neutral ytterbium (Yb) can serve as an additional clock transition with the highest fine-structure constant (alpha e) varying sensitivity coefficient [q = -46165(3000)]. We demonstrate a scheme to attain simultaneous magic trapping conditions for this clock transition with other two proposed clock transitions 4 f 146s2 (1S0) -3P2 and 1S0 -3P2*, which also possess very large q values. These conditions can be realized by subjecting Yb atoms to a bias magnetic field with tuning the particular polarization angles of the trapping laser. Upon realization, it can serve as the most potential optical lattice clock to probe alpha e variation.
Coherent spin dynamics of ytterbium ions in yttrium orthosilicate

Abstract:Rare-earth spins in optical crystals like yttrium orthosilicate (YSO) are of much interest for providing coherent interfaces with both microwave and optical photons. Here, the authors study the spin dynamics of a new system, Yb in YSO, which has favorable optical properties and strong hyperfine coupling to the 171 Yb (spin-1/2) and 173 Yb (spin-5/2) isotopes. The results demonstrate long coherence times for both the electron and nuclear spins (~1 ms). Employing a range of pulsed electron spin resonance measurements as well as comparison with relevant theory, the study elucidates a number of spin relaxation and decoherence mechanisms at work.

Abstract:This study analyzed the optical techniques for high resolution, low-noise spectroscopy of a hyperfine structure (HFS) made of ytterbium-isotope 171 ions ($^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{3+}$:$\mathrm{Y}_2\mathrm{SiO}_5$). Large energy spacings in $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{3+}$ are advantageous for spin-state preparations of quantum memory and construction of a transducer, thereby promoting the simultaneous stable control of the optical frequencies of lasers over a wide range of 3 GHz. We also built our own 2.7-K cryogenic system for optical, radio-wave-assisted spectroscopy. We attained to high resolution and sensitivity both in pump-probe saturation spectroscopy (PPS) and Raman heterodyne spectroscopy (RHS). Our frequency-stabilized PPS achieved a high-resolution spectrum of the HFS, whereas our setup of RHS enabled the efficient detection of paramagnetic spin resonance efficiently for a wide range of radio frequencies. As the underlying Raman process is an up-converting transduction, we present the optimization of the sensitivity of Raman heterodyne detections by selecting the best crystal orientation and efficient radio-wave coupling in future applications toward photon transducers.

Abstract:Adduct formation between the food mutagen 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) and rat serum albumin (RSA) was studied in vitro using hepatic microsomes isolated from polychlorinated biphenyl-induced rats. With 1-methyl-2-nitro-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (2-nitro-PhIP) as starting material, four main products were formed. Pretreatment of RSA with beta-mercaptoethanol markedly increased the yield of one of them. In this adduct, the C-2 of PhIP was linked to cysteine of RSA at position 34 in a C-S linkage. With N2-acetoxy-PhIP as starting material, unstable conjugates were formed with RSA as well as with glutathione (GSH) and cysteine. The suggested structures of the GSH and cysteine conjugates, GSH-S-N2-PhIP and cysteine-S-N2-PhIP respectively, are based on mass spectra and UV spectra. The degradation of the conjugates of GSH and cysteine as well as of the protein adduct were monitored. They all resulted in the same degradation product, identified as 2-amino-5-hydroxy-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (5-hydroxy-PhIP).
State-dependent potentials for the $^1\text{S}_{0}$ and $^3\text{P}_{0}$ clock states of neutral ytterbium atoms

Abstract:We present measurements of three distinctive state-(in)dependent wavelengths for the $^1\text{S}_{0}-^3\text{P}_{0}$ clock transition in $^{174}\text{Yb}$ atoms. Specifically, we determine two magic wavelengths at $652.281(21)\,$THz and $542.50205(19)\,$THz, where the differential light shift on the $^1\text{S}_{0}-^3\text{P}_{0}$ clock transition vanishes, and one tune-out wavelength at $541.8325(5)\,$THz, where the polarizability of the $^1\text{S}_{0}$ ground state exhibits a zero crossing. The two new magic wavelengths are identified by spectroscopically interrogating cold $^{174}\text{Yb}$ atoms on the clock transition in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The ground-state tune-out wavelength is determined via a parametric heating scheme. With a simple empirical model, we then extrapolate the ground and excited state polarizability over a broad range of wavelengths in the visible spectrum.

Abstract:Design of near infrared (NIR) emissive lanthanides such as ytterbium (Yb), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) attracts considerable attentions for the potential applications in telecommunications, optical materials and biological imaging. Exploring an appropriate antenna ligand with the lowest triplet excited state (T1) to efficiently sensitize Ln emission plays a central role to overcome the forbidden f-f transition. To address this issue, natural light harvesting system sets a golden standard for harnessing sunlight power and energy transfer process with molecular precision. A prominent example is given by chlorophylls b, d, f widespread in land plants and cyanobacteria and algae of ocean, respectively, with gradually red shifted Q bands mainly differing from β-formyl substituent orientation. In contrast to modeling studies on deciphering how chlorophylls confer light harvesting function, much less has been reported regarding the application of such insights in designing luminescence materials.1-4 In this work, we reported the significant effect, arising from subtle structural changes, on tuning energy transfer process from the triplet state (T1) of ligand to Yb(III). Minor β-substituent orientation change in Yb cis/trans-porphodilactones (Yb-1 and Yb-2) significantly influences their NIR emissive properties that Yb-1 presented significant enhanced NIR luminescence and high thermo-sensitivity compared to Yb-2 (> 10 times). Combining with spectroscopy studies, we found strong back energy transfer process in Yb-1 but ineffective T1 → Ln* energy transfer in Yb-2. Abstract:Rare earth doped crystals are promising systems for quantum information processing. In particular paramagnetic rare earths could be used to build coherent interfaces with optical and microwave photons. In addition, isotopes with non zero nuclear spins could provide long lived states for quantum state storage and processing. Yb3+ is particularly interesting in this respect since it is the only paramagnetic rare earth with a spin 1/2 isotope, which corresponds to the simplest possible level structure. In this paper, we report on the optical and magnetic properties of Yb3+ in the two sites of Y2SiO5, a commonly used crystal for quantum applications. We measured optical inhomogeneous linewidths, peak absorption coefficients, oscillator strengths, excited state lifetimes and fuorescence branching ratios. The Zeeman tensors were also determined in the ground and excited states, as well as the ground state hyperfine tensor for the 171Yb3+ (I = 1=2) isotope. These results suggest that Yb3+:Y2SiO5 is a promising material for applications like solid state optical and microwave quantum memories.
Narrow optical linewidths in stoichiometric layered rare-earth crystals

Abstract:Rare-earth emitters in solids are well-suited for implementing efficient, long-lived quantum memory coupled to integrated photonics for scalable quantum technologies. They are typically introduced as dopants in a solid-state host, but this introduces disorder and limits the available density of emitters. Stoichiometric materials can offer high densities with narrow optical linewidths. The regular spacing of emitters also opens possibilities for quantum information processing and collective effects. Here we show narrow optical linewidths in a layered stoichiometric crystalline material, NaEu(IO$_3$)$_4$. We observed an inhomogeneous linewidth of 2.2(1) GHz and a homogeneous linewidth of 120(4) kHz. Using spectral hole-burning techniques, we observe a hyperfine spin lifetime of 1.9(4) s. Furthermore, we demonstrate an atomic frequency comb delay of up to 800 ns.

Abstract:Yttrium fluoride (YF3) thin films with a thickness range of 10.8−1079.0 nm were prepared by electron beam evaporation. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to study the thickness-dependent optical properties of YF3 ultrathin films in the 300−820 nm wavelength range. With increasing thicknesses, the refractive indices of the intrinsic YF3 films increase slightly and approach that of bulk YF3 due to the decrease of void fractions. The effective refractive indices of the YF3 films also increase with increasing thicknesses, due to the surface and interface effects besides the contribution of decrease of void fractions.
