NHS is close to “buckling,” doctors’ leaders warn politicians

Abstract:Senior doctors and healthcare professionals have written to the leaders of the three major political parties in England, calling for urgent action to tackle the NHS funding crisis. The letter1—whose signatories included Mark Porter, BMA chair; Jane Dacre, president of the Royal College of Physicians; and Maureen Baker, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners—warned that health and social services were deteriorating because of the “twin crises of rising demand and flatlining budgets.” It warned that problems in seeing a GP, pressure on maternity services, increased waiting times for cancer referrals and emergency departments, and a shortage of beds for mental health patients were symptoms of a system that was close to buckling.
