Abstract:River and reservoir bacterial communities are the most basic part of river biomes and ecosystem structure, and play an important role in river biological processes. Yet, it remains unclear how highly regulated dam reservoirs affect both soil and sediment bacterial communities. A temporal distribution pattern of bacterial communities was investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing in a transition section of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). In total, 106,682 features belong to the bacteria kingdom, encompassing 95 phyla, 228 classes, 514 orders, 871 families, 1959 genera, and 3,053 species. With water level regulation, Shannon diversity index, and observed species differed significantly, with no significant difference in Simpson evenness. Both in the high water level period (October) and the low water level period (June), Proteobacteria, Acidobacteri, and Chloroflexi were the most abundant phyla. Whereas, based on PCA plots and Circos plot, the microbial community structure has changed significantly. LEfSe method was used to identify the classified bacterial taxa with significant abundance differences between the low water level and high water level periods. KOs (KEGG Orthology) pathway enrichment analysis were conducted to investigate functional and related metabolic pathways in groups. To some extent, it can be inferred that water level regulation affects community growth by affecting the metabolism of the microbial community.

Abstract:Riparian zones represent important transitional areas between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Microbial metabolic efficiency and soil enzyme activities are important indicators of carbon cycling in the riparian zones. However, how soil properties and microbial communities regulate the microbial metabolic efficiency in these critical zones remains unclear. Thus, microbial taxa, enzyme activities, and metabolic efficiency were conducted in the riparian zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Microbial carbon use efficiency and microbial biomass carbon had a significant increasing trend along the TGR (from upstream to downstream); indicating higher carbon stock in the downstream, microbial metabolic quotient (qCO 2 ) showed the opposite trend. Microbial community and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that although bacterial and fungal communities showed significant differences in composition, this phenomenon was not found in the number of major modules. Soil enzyme activities were significant predictors of microbial metabolic efficiency along the different riparian zones of the TGR and were significantly influenced by microbial α-diversity. The bacterial taxa Desulfobacterota, Nitrospirota and the fungal taxa Calcarisporiellomycota, Rozellomycota showed a significant positive correlation with qCO 2 . The shifts in key microbial taxa unclassified_k_Fungi in the fungi module #3 are highlighted as essential factors regulating the microbial metabolic efficiency. Structural equation modeling results also revealed that soil enzyme activities had a highly significant negative effect on microbial metabolism efficiency (bacteria, path coefficient = −0.63; fungi, path coefficient = −0.67).This work has an important impact on the prediction of carbon cycling in aquatic-terrestrial ecotones.

Anti-seasonal submergence dominates the structure and composition of prokaryotic communities in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Abstract:Since the completion of Three Gorges Dam in 2008, a large water-level fluctuation zone with anti-seasonal submergence has formed between the elevations of 145 m and 175 m in the Three Gorges Reservoir in China. In addition to hydrological regime, revegetation has also occurred in this water-level fluctuation zone. However, how the hydrological regime and revegetation regulate soil prokaryotic community remains unclear. Here, we investigated soil prokaryotic community structure, diversity and environmental parameters in different flooding zones from two soil layers (0-10 cm and 10-30 cm) at 6 locations along the water-level fluctuation zone from upstream to downstream. The soil prokaryotic diversity tended to decrease from upstream to downstream, and the alpha diversity was higher in the topsoil than in the deep soil at all sites. Flooding significantly enhanced the prokaryotic diversity compared to the control (i.e., permanent dry zone). The soil prokaryotic composition underwent deterministic processes in the upstream sites and stochastic processes in the downstream sites, with stronger stochastic processes in the topsoil than in the deep soil across all sites and elevations. As expected, the soil pH, moisture, NH4+-N, organic carbon and nitrogen were proven to be determinants of the prokaryotic community composition. Changes in plant traits (plant biomass, richness, and carbon content) after revegetation induced by submergence also played an important role in structuring the prokaryotic community. The prokaryotic community exhibited a shorter average path distance (GD) in the flooding zones compared to the control, with the shortest average degree (avgK) and the lowest levels of stability in the longer periodic inundation zones. Overall, our results suggest that soil properties and plant functional traits are critical controls of the prokaryotic community's ability to develop at regional scales and water submergence can likewise be an important factor for variations in the prokaryotic community composition in riparian zones.
Land use driven change in soil organic carbon affects soil microbial community assembly in the riparian of Three Gorges Reservoir Region

Abstract:After decades of anti-seasonal water fluctuation in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), a distinctive riparian zone had been formed and played critical roles on soil biogeochemistry cycling, substance exchange and soil microbial functions. However, the effect of land use on terrestrial ecological processes and soil microbial community assembly in riparian zone was still imprecise. This study focused on the relationship of soil properties and microbial communities in paddy and dryland soils of a typical riparian zone in the TGR. The results indicated a higher level of accumulation of total organic carbon (TOC) in paddy soil (14.88–20.29 g kg−1) than that in dryland soil (7.59–16.20 g kg−1). The riparian soil was slightly polluted by cadmium and phthalate acid esters with an average concentration of 0.19 mg kg−1 and 6.45 mg kg−1, which may be from agricultural sources, posing a potential health risk. Based on 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, there was a higher microbial diversity in paddy soils than dryland soils, and Acidobacteriaceae and Anaerolineaceae represented the dominant taxa in dryland and paddy soils, respectively. Furthermore, the results of redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling showed that land use driven change in soil organic carbon affected the fate of soil pollutants, and constructed soil microbial communities in the riparian zone of TGR. Null model revealed that homogeneous selection explained about 76.36% and 53.33% microbial community assembly, followed by dispersal limitation (14.54% and 37.50%) in dryland and paddy soil. In consequence, a strong effect of environmental filtering was observed on arable soil microbial community structure with different land use in the riparian zone of TGR, and TOC was the key regulator.

Abstract:Due to extensive water exchanges and abundant active biochemical compositions, active and complex hydrogeochemical processes often exist in riverbank filtration (RBF). The distribution of microbes is considered to be profoundly affected by these processes and is considered to impact the hydrogeochemical processes and the migration and transformation of water pollutants in turn and then impact the water quality. The distribution of microbes and their response to the physiochemical properties along a vertical RBF profile perpendicular to the Songhua River in Northeast China was explored by using 16 S rRNA and redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that various microbes were found in the vertical riparian filter (RBF) curve, including Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Firmicutes. With increasing depth (vertical) and distance from the river (lateral), the microbial community and diversity in the RBF sediment profile decreased. Nitrospirota, Pseudomonas, Gammaproteobacteria, Ochrobactrum, Acinetobacter and Desulfobacterota of the RBF core taxa were also significantly correlated with the biotransformation behavior of typical groundwater pollutants (ammonia, Fe, Mn and S). The amount of As in the RBF is too low to sustain microbial survival. Some microbes in RBF can also degrade natural organic pollutants. This study not only revealed the spatial distribution of geological microbes under the impact of hydrological processes but also lays a foundation for the further study of the hydrobiogeochemical processes of active biochemical compositions in groundwater and water quality evolution, which is of positive significance to ensure the quality safety of the drinking water supplied by RBFs.
Microbial diversity accumulates in a downstream direction in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Abstract:Organic and inorganic materials migrate downstream and have important roles in regulating environmental health in the river networks. However, it remains unclear whether and how a mixture of materials (i.e., microbial species) from various upstream habitats contribute to microbial community coalescence upstream of a dam. Here we track the spatial variation in microbial abundance and diversity in the Three Gorges Reservoir based on quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing data. We further quantitatively assess the relative contributions of microbial species from mainstem, its tributaries, and the surrounding riverbank soils to the area immediately upstream of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). We found an increase of microbial diversity and the convergent microbial distribution pattern in areas immediately upstream of TGD, suggesting this area become a new confluence for microbial diversity immigrating from upstream. Indeed, the number of shared species increased from upstream to TGD but unique species decreased, indicating immigration of various sources of microbial species overwhelms local environmental conditions in structuring microbial community close to TGD. By quantifying the sources of microbial species close to TGD, we found little contribution from soils as compared to tributaries, especially for sites closer to TGD, suggesting tributary microbes have greater influence on microbial diversity and environmental health in the Three Gorges Reservoir. Collectively, our results suggest that tracking microbial geographic origin and evaluating accumulating effects of microbial diversity shed light on the ecological processes in microbial communities and provide information for regulating aquatic ecological health.

Abstract:Deciphering biogeographic patterns of microorganisms is important for evaluating the maintenance of microbial diversity with respect to the ecosystem functions they drives. However, ecological processes shaping distribution patterns of microorganisms across large spatial‐scale watersheds remain largely unknown. Using Illumina sequencing and multiple statistical methods, we characterized distribution patterns and maintenance diversity of microorganisms (i.e., archaea, bacteria, and fungi) in soils and sediments along the Yangtze River. Distinct microbial distribution patterns were found between soils and sediments, and microbial community similarity significantly decreased with increasing geographical distance. Physicochemical properties showed a larger effect on microbial community composition than geospatial and climatic factors. Archaea and fungi displayed stronger species replacements and weaker environmental constraints in soils than that in sediments, but opposite for bacteria. Archaea, bacteria, and fungi in soils showed broader environmental breadths and stronger phylogenetic signals compared to those in sediments, suggesting stronger environmental adaptation. Stochasticity dominated community assemblies of archaea and fungi in soils and sediments, whereas determinism dominated bacterial community assembly. Our results have therefore highlighted distinct microbial distribution patterns and diversity maintenance mechanisms between soils and sediments, and emphasized important roles of species replacement, environmental adaptability, and ecological assembly processes on microbial landscape. Our findings are helpful in predicting loss of microbial diversity in the Yangtze River Basin, and might assist the establishment of environmental policies for protecting fragile watersheds.
[Composition and Predictive Functional Analysis of Rhizosphere Bacterial Communities in Riparian Buffer Strips in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China]

Abstract:Microbial communities play crucial roles in the global biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. To our knowledge, the compositions and functions of rhizosphere communities in riparian buffer strips have not been reported. In this study, rhizosphere soil samples were collected from herbs (Vetiveria zizanioides and Phragmites australis), trees (Pyrus betulifolia), and shrubs (Discocleidion rufescens) in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in June 2017. High-throughput sequencing was performed to analyze the community structure and diversity of bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequences shows that the bacterial communities can be divided into 31 major phylogenetic groups. The dominant phylogenetic groups include Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Acidobacteria. Phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) was used to determine the metabolic and functional abilities of the observed bacterial communities. Our results reveal a wide genetic diversity of organisms involved in various essential processes such as biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, transcription, Glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, cell growth and death, and carbohydrate metabolism. Based on the 16S rRNA gene copy number of the detected phylotype, the bacterial rhizospheres of plants in riparian buffer strips can be ranked as follows:Discocleidion rufescens > Phragmites australis > Vetiveria zizanioides > Pyrus betulifolia. We analyzed the differences of different plants from the perspective of bacterial community composition and function and provide a foundation for vegetation construction and water environmental protection in riparian buffer strips of the Danjiangkou Reservoir.

Abstract:Microbial communities play vital roles in cycling nutrients and maintaining water quality in aquatic ecosystems. To better understand the dynamics of microbial communities and to pave way to effective ecological remediation, it's essential to reveal the temporal patterns of the communities and to identify their states. However, research exploring the dynamic changes of microbial communities needs a large amount of time-series data, which could be an extravagant requirement for a single study. In this research, we overcame this challenge by conducting a meta-analysis of years of accumulations of 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing data from the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), an ecological and environmental hotspot. For better understanding the microbial communities time-dissimilarity dynamics, three microbial communities time-dissimilarity patterns were hypothesized, and the linear pattern in the TGRA was validated. In addition, to explore the stability of microbial communities in the TGRA, two alternative stable states were revealed, and their differences in community richness, alpha diversity indices, community composition, ecological network topological properties, and metabolic functions were demonstrated. In short, two states of microbial communities showed distinct richness and alpha diversity indices, and the communities in one state were more dominated by Halomonas and Nitrosopumilaceae genera, facilitating nitrogen cycling metabolic processes; whilst the main genera of the other state were Bathyarchaeia and Methanosaeta, which favored methane-related metabolism. Moreover, different studies and environmental differences between mainstream and tributaries were attributed as the potential inducing factors of the state division. Our study provides a comprehensive insight into the dynamics and stability of microbial communities in the TGRA, and a reference for future studies on microbial community dynamics.

Abstract:Inter-basin water transfer projects, such as the Yellow River to Qingdao Water Diversion Project (YQWD), are essential for addressing water scarcity, but impact local aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the seasonal characteristics of eukaryotic microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir, the main water-receiving body of YQWD, over a one-year period using 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing. The results showed that the eukaryotic microbial diversity did not exhibit significant seasonal variation (p > 0.05), but there was a notable variance in the community structure (p < 0.05). Arthropoda and Paracyclopina, representing the most dominant phylum and the most dominant genus, respectively, both exhibited the lowest abundance during the winter. The Chlorophyta, as the second-dominant phylum, demonstrates its higher abundance in the spring and winter. The Mantel test and PLS-PM (Partial Least Squares Path Modeling) revealed that water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH influenced the seasonal dynamic of eukaryotic microbial communities significantly, of which WT was the primary driving factor. In addition to environmental factors, water diversion is likely to be an important influencing factor. The results of the co-occurrence network and robustness suggested that the spring network is the most complex and exhibits the highest stability. Moreover, keystone taxa within networks have been identified, revealing that these key groups encompass both abundant and rare species, with specificity to different seasons. These insights are vital for understanding the seasonal variation of microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir during ongoing water diversions.

Abstract:Bacterial communities play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle in reservoir ecosystems. However, the dynamic changes in both planktonic and sediment bacterial communities in a highly regulated dam reservoir remain unclear. This study investigated the temporal distribution patterns of bacterial communities in a transition section of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Results suggested that in comparison to the planktonic bacteria, sediment bacteria contributed more to the reservoir microbial communities, accounting for 97% of the 7434 OTUs. The Shannon diversity index in the water (3.22~5.68) was generally lower than that in the sediment (6.72~7.56). In the high water level period (January and March), Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, whereas in the low water level period (May, July, and September), the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Sediment samples were dominated by Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria. Principal coordinate analysis of the bacterioplankton communities showed greater sensitivity to monthly changes than that of the sediment bacterial communities. Network analysis suggested that in comparison to planktonic bacterial communities, sediment bacterial communities were more complex and stable. The linear relationship between the CH4/CO2 ratio, water level, and relative abundance of methanotrophs highlighted the potential methane-oxidizing process in the mid-part of the TGR. Moreover, the potential impact of dam regulation on the bacterial communities was revealed by the significant relationship between abundant phyla and the inflow of the TGR.

Abstract:Soil bacterial play special roles in the maintenance and stabilization of wetland ecosystem. To investigate bacterial community structure and diversity in rhizosphere soils of four dominant plants in riparian wetlands of mountain reservoir in Zhejiang province, the V4+V5 areas of 16S rDNA gene of bacteria were sequenced and analyzed by the Illumina HiSeq 2500 high-throughput sequencing technology. The results indicated that 27 phylums, 70 classes, 144 orders, 218 families, and 370 genuses of bacteria were achieved, with Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria,Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes being the dominant phylum and Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Betaproteobacteria and Thermoleophilia being the main class in the soils of riparian wetlands in this areas. The Shannon index and chao1 index of the rhizosphere soil bacteria of Salix babylonica were 8.64 and 585.58, respectively, which were the highest among the four plants, and that of Pterocarya stenoptera were the lowest, with 7.71 and 289.63, respectively. Soil pH, total nitrogen and organic matter were the main factors affecting the soil bacterial community structure in the soil rhizosphere of four dominant plants species in wetlands of riparian zone of reservoir in Zhejiang province.
Different effects of seasonal impoundment and land use change on microbiome in a tributary sediment of the three gorgers reservoir

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities significantly impact river ecosystem nutrient fluxes and microbial metabolism. Here, we examined the seasonal and spatial variation of sediments physicochemical parameters and the associated microbiome in the Pengxi river, a representative tributary of Three Gorges Reservoir, in response to seasonal impoundment and land use change by human activities. Results revealed that seasonal impoundment and land use change enhanced total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration in the sediment, but have different effects on sediment microbiome. Sediment microbiota showed higher similarity during the seasonal high-water level (HWL) in consecutive two years. The abundant phyla Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria and Planctomycetes significantly increased as water level increased. Along the changes in bacterial taxa, we also observed changes in predicted carbon fixation functions and nitrogen-related functions, including the significantly higher levels of Calvin cycle, 4HB/3HP cycle, 3HP cycle and assimilatory nitrate reduction, while significantly lower level of denitrification. Though land use change significantly increased TOC, TN and NH4+-N concentration, its effects on spatial variation of bacterial community composition and predicted functions was not significant. The finding indicates that TGR hydrologic changes and land use change have different influences on the carbon and nitrogen fluxes and their associated microbiome in TGR sediments. A focus of future research will be on assessing on carbon and nitrogen flux balance and the associated carbon and nitrogen microbial cycling in TGR sediment.

Abstract:Ecological processes (e.g., nutrient cycling) in riparian zones are often affected by land-use type and flooding. The extent to which land-use types and flooding conditions affect soil microorganisms and their ecological functions in riparian zones is not well known. By using high-throughput sequencing and quantitative PCR (q-PCR), we tested the effects of three land-use types (i.e., forest, wetland, and grassland) and two flooding conditions (i.e., landward locations and waterward locations within the land-use types) on soil microbial communities and microbial functional genes in the riparian zones of a reservoir. Land-use type but not flooding significantly affected soil microbial community composition at the phylum level, while both land-use type and flooding significantly affected the orders Nitrosotaleales and Nitrososphaerales. Alpha diversity was higher in the wetland and forest regardless of flooding conditions. Functional gene abundance differed among the three land-use types. Archaeal amoA (AOA) and nirS genes were more abundant in the wetland than in the grassland or forest. Bacterial amoA (AOB), nirK, nirS, and nosZ genes were more abundant in the waterward location than in the landward location but only in the wetland. Soil pH, moisture, and concentrations of soil organic matter and total soil nitrogen were significantly associated with the composition of archaeal and bacterial communities as well as with their gene abundance. This study revealed that soil microorganisms putatively involved in nitrogen cycling in riparian zones were more affected by land-use type than flooding.

[Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Plant Community and the Identification of Driving Factors in Riparian Zone of the Three-River Headwaters Region, China]

Abstract:The unique geographical and climatic conditions in the Three-River Headwaters Region gave birth to distinctive plant species and vegetation types. To reveal the spatial distribution of plant communities and soil habitats along the riparian zone of the Sanjiangyuan Region and their influencing mechanisms, 14 survey plots were set up （ten from the Yangtze River source, two from the Lancang River source, and two from the Yellow River source）, and the effects of soil nutrient characteristics （especially soil phosphorus morphology）, climate factors, and river topography on plant community characteristics were quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that the plant community composition in the riparian zone of the source of the three rivers was dominated by perennial herbs （72.2%）, followed by annual herbs （20.4%） and shrubs （7.4%）. The dominant plants were Stipa purpurea, Polygonum orbiculatum, Carex parvula, Potentilla anserina, and Gentiana straminea. The average plant coverage, Shannon-Wiener index, and Pielou index were （64.4% ±23.6%）, （1.31 ±0.42）, and （0.84 ±0.08）, respectively. The plant community diversity index was the highest in the Yangtze River source, followed by that in the Lancang River source, and the lowest in the Yellow River source. The soil pH of the riparian zone of the Yangtze River source was significantly higher than that of the Lancang River source, whereas the mean contents of organic matter, total nitrogen, and Fe-Al combined phosphorus were significantly lower than those of the Lancang River source. The calcium and magnesium-combined phosphorus was the main form of phosphorus in riparian soil （63.89%）. Temperature, soil organic phosphorus content, and pH had significant effects on plant composition in the riparian zone of the Three-River Headwaters Region, whereas soil calcium and magnesium-combined phosphorus content had significant effects on plant community diversities. These results may deepen the scientific understanding of the evolution trend and genetic mechanism of plant communities in the riparian zone of the Three-River Headwaters Region.

Abstract:The reservoir coastal zone is the transitional zone between the terrestrial ecosystem and the aquatic ecosystem. Soil is an essential part of the terrestrial ecosystem and vital for life on Earth. To understand the composition and diversity of the soil eukaryotic microbial community under the background of artificial planting of Chrysopogon zizanioides in various habitats after reservoir construction, including the original habitat (OH), the hydro-fluctuation belt (HB), and the road slope (RS), and to analyze the interaction between the main groups of eukaryotic microorganisms, this study conducted 18S rDNA amplification high-throughput sequencing of the soil eukaryotic microbial community. The study found that the dominant phylum of eukaryotic microorganisms in the three habitats was consistent, but there were significant differences in the community and diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms in the three habitats. The differences in fungal communities between sample sites were greater than those of soil microfauna. Correlation analysis showed that nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter were significantly correlated with eukaryotic microbial diversity, with alkaline-hydrolyzed nitrogen and total phosphorus significantly correlated with fungal communities and pH and water content correlated with soil microfauna. Co-occurrence network analysis found that the interactions between fungi and the correlation between fungi and soil microfauna dominated the eukaryotic microbial community, and the interactions between eukaryotic microbes in different habitats were dominated by positive correlations. After the construction of the reservoir, the newly formed hydro-fluctuation belt reduced the types of interrelationships between fungi and microfauna compared to the original habitat. The road slope provided protection of the supporting project for the reservoir construction, although there was also planted vegetation. Eukaryotic microbes declined significantly due to the damage to and loss of the organic layer, and the decline in microfauna was the most significant, resulting in a simple structure of the soil food web, which affects the function and stability of the soil ecosystem.

Abstract:The records of 53 patients treated surgically for squamous cell carcinoma of the lower alveolar ridge were reviewed and the results of segmental and marginal resections of the mandible were compared. Analysis of these 2 treatment modalities disclosed that marginal resection was effective in controlling lower gingival cancers, with and without apparent bone involvement, if erosive bone defects that did not extend beyond the inferior alveolar canal, or invasive bone defects confined to a superficial area of the alveolar bone, were detected radiologically.

Abstract:The Potyvirus is the largest genus of the largest family of plant RNA viruses, the Potyviridae. The potyviruses infect not only dicotyledonous but also monocotyledonous plants. The potyvirus phylogeny shows that the genus probably originated from a virus of monocotyledonous plants and that it first diverged approximately 7250 years ago in Southwest Eurasia or North Africa. Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) belongs to the genus Potyvirus and infects a wide range of plant species, most from the family Brassicaceae. TuMV is most studied a potyvirus species for molecular evolution and the genetic structure of populations. The use of computer programs for better understanding of the evolution and the genetic structures of populations of potyviruses and TuMV are illustrated.

Abstract:The magnitude of secondary-electron contributions to electron- or photon-stimulated desorption (ESD) or (PSD) yields is considered. In particular, we have reexamined three systems where a dominant x-ray-induced ESD (XESD) effect has been postulated. Recent ESD ion-angular-distribution data on the ${\mathrm{NH}}_{3}$/Ni system and a detailed determination of the mechanisms involved in ${\mathrm{H}}^{+}$ desorption indicate that all of the features previously attributed to the XESD effect may in fact arise from direct core-level processes. A reexamination of the PSD ${\mathrm{N}}^{+}$ and ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ yields from condensed ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$-${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ reveals that the indirect XESD mechanism contributes just one-third of the ${\mathrm{N}}^{+}$ yield, but dominates the ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ desorption. This arises because the direct Auger-stimulated desorption (ASD) process following core-hole excitation is inactive for ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ desorption, but remains active for ${\mathrm{N}}^{+}$. Finally, a detailed interpretation of ${\mathrm{H}}^{+}$ desorption from OH/Ti and OH/Cr, and comparison with the system OH/YbO-Sm indicates that the direct ASD process is also inactive in the latter case. This investigation concludes that in cases for which the direct ASD process is active, the indirect XESD contribution is generally on the order of 35% or less. When the ASD process is suppressed, the XESD process generally dominates. However, in chemisorbed systems, even when the direct process is relatively inactive, the XESD process does not dominate. The various reasons for this are discussed.
