Abstract:The reactions of Ta+ and Nb+ with CO2 proceed only by a highly efficient oxygen atom transfer reaction to the respective oxide at room temperature in the gas phase. Although the product spin states are not determined, thermochemistry dictates that they must be different from ground state quintet Ta+ and Nb+, implying that intersystem crossing (ISC) has occurred. Recent reactive scattering experiments found dominant indirect dynamics for the reaction with Ta+ hinting at a bottleneck along the reaction path. The question on the nature of the bottleneck, whether it involves a crossing point or a transition state, could not be finally answered because theory located both close to each other. Here, we aim at shedding further light onto the impact of intersystem crossing on the reaction dynamics and ultimately the reactivity of transition metal ion reactions in the gas phase. We employ a combination of thermal kinetics for Ta+ and Nb+ with CO2 using a selected-ion flow tube (SIFT) apparatus and differential scattering cross sections for Nb+ + CO2 from crossed-beam velocity map imaging. The reaction with niobium again shows dominant indirect dynamics and in general very similar dynamics compared to Ta+ + CO2. At thermal energies, both reactions show sub-collisional rate constants with small negative temperature dependencies. Experiments are complemented by high level quantum chemical calculations of the minimum energy pathway. Statistical modelling well-reproduces the experimental thermal rate constants, and suggests that the Nb+ reaction is rate-limited by the intersystem crossing at thermal energies.

Abstract:The thermal gas-phase catalytic reduction of N2O by CO, mediated by the transition-metal nitride cluster ion [NbN](+), has been explored by using FT-ICR mass spectrometry and complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the [Nb](+)/[NbO](+) and [NbO](+)/[Nb(O)(2)](+) systems, in which the oxidation of [Nb](+) and [NbO](+) with N2O is facile, but in which neither [NbO](+) nor [Nb(O)(2)](+) react with CO at room temperature, the [NbN](+)/[ONbN](+) system at ambient temperature mediates the catalytic oxidation of CO. The origins of the distinctly different reactivities upon nitrogen ligation are addressed by quantum chemical calculations.
A Kinetic Model of Nano‐cao Reactions with CO2 in a Sorption Complex Catalyst

Abstract:This article describes the reactive kinetics of nano-CaO with CO2 in a sorption complex catalyst. Based on an observation of nano-CaO reaction with CO2 has a fast surface reaction regime and followed by a slow diffusion-controlled regime, a criterion has been proposed to divide the fast surface reaction regime and the slow diffusion-controlled reaction regime. The kinetics of the fast surface reaction was studied, and a new ion reaction mechanism was proposed. A surface reaction-controlled kinetic model with a Boltzmann equation, X = Xu-Xu/[1+exp((t-t0)k/Xu)], was developed. Experiments using nano-CaO to react with CO2 in a fast surface reaction regime within a sorption complex catalyst were performed using thermogravimetric analysis at 773873 K under a N2 atmosphere with 0.0100.020 MPa CO2. The activation energy of the kinetic model for carbonation is 30.2 kJ/mol, and the average relative deviation of the sorption ratio is less than 9.8%. Abstract:The thermal gas-phase reactions of [CeON]+ with methane have been explored by FT-ICR mass spectrometry and high-level quantum-chemical calculations. Nitrogen-atom transfer from the cluster ion to methane was observed as the only reaction channel. Based on computational work, the neutral molecule formed corresponds to either CH2 NH2 or CH3 NH. In addition to a rather weak OCe+ -N bond, this reaction benefits from a highly efficient intersystem crossing. Mechanistic aspects and the associated electronic origins are discussed, and a detailed comparison of [CeON]+ , [CeO]+ , [CeN]+ , [CeO2 ]+ , and atomic N in their reactions with CH4 is given.
Multistate Dynamics and Kinetics of CO2 Activation by Ta+ in the Gas Phase: Insights into Single-Atom Catalysis

Abstract:The activation of carbon dioxide (CO2) by a transition-metal cation in the gas phase is a unique model system for understanding single-atom catalysis. The mechanism of such reactions is often attributed to a "two-state reactivity" model in which the high-energy barrier of a spin state correlating with ground-state reactants is avoided by intersystem crossing (ISC) to a different spin state with a lower barrier. However, such a "spin-forbidden" mechanism, along with the corresponding dynamics, has seldom been rigorously examined theoretically, due to the lack of global potential energy surfaces (PESs). In this work, we report full-dimensional PESs of the lowest-lying quintet, triplet, and singlet states of the TaCO2+ system, machine-learned from first-principles data. These PESs and the corresponding spin-orbit couplings enable us to provide an extensive theoretical characterization of the dynamics and kinetics of the reaction between the tantalum cation (Ta+) and CO2, which have recently been investigated experimentally at high collision energies using crossed beams and velocity map imaging, as well as at thermal energies using a selected-ion flow tube apparatus. The multistate quasi-classical trajectory simulations with surface hopping reproduce most of the measured product translational and angular distributions, shedding valuable light on the nonadiabatic reaction dynamics. The calculated rate coefficients from 200 to 600 K are also in good agreement with the latest experimental measurements. More importantly, these calculations revealed that the reaction is controlled by intersystem crossing, rather than potential barriers.

Abstract:The transition metal niobium (Nb) has attracted considerable attention from the scientific community due to its intriguing electronic properties and applications in catalysts suitable for chemical reactions. Thus, this work investigates the adsorption of the atmospheric polluting gas carbon monoxide (CO) by the niobium cluster (Nb ), to describe the reactive nature of Nb . This entire study was carried out by applying the Coupled-Cluster method and Density Functional Theory (through the HSE06 functional) and the def2-QZVP plus Def2-TZVP/C auxiliary basis set functions. The results of electronic structure calculations and IR vibrational spectra suggest that both Nb and the Nb -CO clusters can be considered stable. Furthermore, the obtained results also indicate that there is a chemisorption of carbon monoxide by the Nb niobium cluster. This feature can serve as motivation for future theoretical–experimental studies, as it suggests that the Nb cluster may have possible technological applications in automotive catalytic processes.

Abstract:The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) by transition-metal oxides in the gas phase serves as a unique model system for understanding transition metal-based catalytic systems in CO 2 utilization. In this work, thermochemistry and reaction mechanisms attributed to the two-state reactivity scenario of CO 2 reduction by group 5 transition metal monoxide cations are extensively investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The interaction between the VO + cation with CO 2 exhibits an endothermic feature, whereas the reaction involving the TaO + cation showcases a more pronounced exothermic behavior than the NbO + cation, in accordance with previously reported reaction rates. Based on in-depth examinations of potential energy surfaces and spin–orbit couplings, it has been revealed that the reaction kinetics of CO 2 reduction to CO by the VO + cation is restricted not only by a significant energy barrier related to the singlet transition state, but also by the limited probability of intersystem crossing. For NbO + and TaO + cations, the spin inversion from triplet to singlet pathways becomes the rate-limiting step. The reaction with the TaO + cation represents a different case from typical two-state reactivity patterns, where the minimum energy crossing point submerged relative to the reactants level stands for the exclusive barrier. A considerably higher probability of intersystem crossing was identified for the reaction of the TaO + cation with CO 2 , elucidating the basis for the substantial increase in the rate constant compared to that of the NbO + cation.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide coordination and activation by niobium oxide molecules were studied by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the niobium monoxide molecule reacted with carbon dioxide to form the niobium dioxide carbonyl complex NbO(2)(η(1)-CO) spontaneously on annealing in solid neon. The observation of the spontaneous reaction is consistent with theoretical predictions that this carbon dioxide activation process is both thermodynamically exothermic and kinetically facile. In contrast, four niobium dioxide-carbon dioxide complexes exhibiting three different coordination modes of CO(2) were formed from the reactions between niobium dioxide and carbon dioxide, which proceeded with the initial formation of the η(1)-O bound NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO) and NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(2) complexes on annealing. The NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO) complex rearranged to the η(2)-O,O bound NbO(2)(η(2)-O(2)C) isomer under visible light irradiation, while the NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(2) complex isomerized to the NbO(2)(η(1)-OCO)(η(2)-OC)O structure involving an η(2)-C,O ligand under IR excitation. In these niobium dioxide carbon dioxide complexes, the η(1)-O coordinated CO(2) ligand serves as an electron donor, whereas both the η(2)-C,O and η(2)-O,O coordinated CO(2) ligands act as electron acceptors.
Tumour necrosis factor alpha inhibits in-vitro decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells.

Abstract:Interleukin-1 (IL-1) has been reported previously to inhibit the in-vitro decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells as assessed by progesterone-induced prolactin production and morphological transformation. In this study we examined whether other cytokines, such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha), interferon-beta (IFN beta), IFN gamma or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), could affect the decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells in vitro. Of these cytokines, TNF alpha significantly suppressed prolactin production in a dose-dependent manner, with no apparent effect on cell number. The morphological transformation of endometrial stromal cells was also inhibited by TNF alpha. TNF alpha and IL-1 significantly suppressed cAMP-stimulated prolactin production by endometrial stromal cells. Neither the progesterone concentration in the supernatant of the endometrial stromal cell culture system nor intracellular calcium concentration of the endometrial stromal cells were affected by the addition of TNF alpha or IL-1. These results indicated that TNF alpha and IL-1 suppress both progesterone-induced and cAMP-mediated prolactin production in endometrial stromal cells, and that this inhibition was not attributable to direct effects on progesterone metabolism or related to Ca(2+)-mediated signal transduction. These experiments suggested that a local increase of TNF alpha and IL-1 under certain pathological conditions in vivo may disturb blastocyst implantation and/or the maintenance of pregnancy by inhibiting the decidualization of endometrial stromal cells.

Abstract:Twenty-one N-methylcarbamates (NMCs) and 12 of their metabolites or isomers in citrus fruits were simultaneously determined avoiding use of dichloromethane. NMCs in lemon, orange, and grapefruit were extracted with acetone, then the acetone was evaporated off and sodium chloride was added before extraction with ethyl acetate. The extract was evaporated and the residue was cleaned up on a combined mini-column set of Supelclean ENVI-Carb and Mega Bond Elut SAX cartridges. NMCs were determined by HPLC with post-column reaction and fluorescence detection. All of the NMCs in the orange sample were determined without interfering peaks. However 8 NMCs in lemon extract and 10 NMCs in grapefruit extract were not detected because interfering peaks appeared at similar retention times to those of the NMCs. These NMCs were determined using LC/MS (SIM) and were well recovered. Eighty-three data sets obtained by HPLC and LC/MS showed good similarity, with r2 = 0.9178. Recoveries were 60.1 to 97.8% for major NMCs at a fortification level of 0.1 ppm. The limit of detection by HPLC was 0.005 ppm NMCs in samples and a similar level applied to LC/MS.

Abstract:A combined experimental-theoretical study is performed to advance our understanding of the dynamics of the prototypical tetra-atom, complex-forming reaction OH + CO → H + CO2, which is also of great practical relevance in combustion, Earth's atmosphere, and, potentially, Mars's atmosphere and interstellar chemistry. New crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection are analyzed together with the results from previous experiments and compared with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations on a new, full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). Comparisons between experiment and theory are carried out both in the center-of-mass and laboratory frames. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory, both for product angular and translational energy distributions, leading to the conclusion that the new PES is the most accurate at present in elucidating the dynamics of this fundamental reaction. Yet, small deviations between experiment and theory remain and are presumably attributable to the QCT treatment of the scattering dynamics.

Abstract:Studying the cleavage of the C═O bond during CO2 activation at room temperature is highly significant for comprehending the CO2 conversion processes. Herein, mass spectrometry experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that the niobium carbide anions Nb3C4- can continuously convert five CO2 molecules to CO under thermal collision conditions, while the other clusters with less carbon ligands Nb3C1-3- reduce fewer CO2 molecules. Size-dependent reactivity of Nb3C1-4- cluster anions toward CO2 is observed. Interestingly, the carbon atoms in Nb3C4- not only act as highly active adsorption sites for CO2 but also serve as electron donors to reduce CO2. The stored electrons are released through a carbon-carbon coupling process. Our findings on the role of carbon ligands in enhancing transition metal carbide reactivity can offer new insights for designing active sites on catalysts with both high activity and selectivity.

Abstract:The CO activation by low-valent group 14 catalysts encompasses the rupture of varied covalent bonds in a single transition state through a concerted pathway. The bond between the central main group atom and the hydride in the complex is elongated to trigger the formation of the C–H bond with CO accompanied by the concomitant formation of the E–O bond between the complex and CO to lead the corresponding formate product. Prior studies have established that besides the apolar nature of CO , its initial interaction with the complex is primarily governed by electrostatic interactions. Notably, other stabilizing interactions and the transfer of charge between catalysts and CO during the initial phases of the reaction have been ignored. In this study, we have quantified the non-covalent interactions and charge transfer that facilitate the activation of CO by group 14 main group complex. Our findings indicate that electrostatic interactions predominantly stabilize the complex and CO in the reactant region. However, induction energy becomes the main stabilizing force as the reaction progresses towards the transition state, surpassing electrostatics. Induction contributes about 50% to the stabilization at the transition state, followed by electrostatics (40%) and dispersion interactions (10%). Atomic charges calculated with the minimal basis iterative stockholder (MBIS) method reveal larger charge transfer for the back-side reaction path in which CO approaches the catalysts in contrast to the front-side approach. Notably, it was discovered that a minor initial bending of CO to approximately initiates the charge transfer process for all systems. Furthermore, our investigation of group 14 elements demonstrates a systematic reduction in both activation energies and charge transfer to CO while descending in group 14.

Abstract:One major technical and economic hurdle on the sequestration of CO2 is its separation from nitrogen when fossil fuels are burned in air. An alternative, thermodynamically equivalent approach is to use a metal oxide as an oxygen carrier (oxidizer) and then recycle the carrier following its reduction by exothermic reoxidation in air. This process, termed chemical looping combustion (CLC), places many requirements on the oxygen carrier. Here, we explore how to evaluate the relationship between the microscopic properties of an oxygen carrier and its performance in CLC. In this paper, systematically doped Bi2O3 were synthesized as oxygen carriers for the oxidation of carbon. In operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and online mass spectrometry enable us to monitor both the phase evolution in the solid and the production of gaseous products. Abstract:The detailed mechanism of CO-induced N-N bond cleavage of N2O mediated by molybdenum complexes leading to the nitrosyl isocyanate complex has been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP level. On the basis of the calculations, we proposed a new reaction mechanism of CO-induced N-N bond cleavage of N2O with an overall free energy barrier of 23.6 kcal/mol, significantly lower than that of the reaction mechanism (42.2 kcal/mol) proposed by Sita et al. The calculations also indicated that CO-induced N-N bond cleavage of N2O is competitive with oxygen atom transfer (OAT) to carbon monoxide due to the comparable free energy barriers. The metal-bound carbonyl complex obtained from OAT can be recycled to give more nitrosyl isocyanate complexes. In addition, we demonstrated why the analogous tungsten complex cannot give the nitrosyl isocyanate complex via CO-induced N-N bond cleavage of N2O. The calculations are consistent with experimental observations.
Can Subsurface Oxygen Species in Oxides Participate in Catalytic Reactions? An 17O Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study

Abstract:The impacts of subsurface species of catalysts on reaction processes are still under debate, largely due to a lack of characterization methods for distinguishing these species from the surface species and the bulk. By using 17O solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which can distinguish subsurface oxygen ions in CeO2 (111) nanorods, we explore the effects of subsurface species of oxides in CO oxidation reactions. The intensities of the 17O NMR signals due to surface and subsurface oxygen ions decrease after the introduction of CO into CeO2 nanorods, with a more significant decrease observed for the latter, confirming the participation of subsurface oxygen species. Density functional theory calculations show that the reaction involves subsurface oxygen ions filling the surface oxygen vacancies created by the direct contact of surface oxygen with CO. This new approach can be extended to the study of the role of oxygen species in other catalytic reactions.

Abstract:An important aspect of sustainable chemistry research is the discovery of novel chemical mechanisms by which otherwise inert molecules become activated toward useful transformations by earth’s most abundant elements. Compounds involving the most abundant metal on earth, aluminum, most commonly involve AlIII ions due to their noble gas electronic configurations. Although compounds with AlI ions have also been studied, the chemistry of AlII ions is nearly unknown and may contain undiscovered reaction manifolds. Here, we report the CO2 activation chemistry of an AlII complex supported by a chelating, dianionic ligand and investigate the electronic structure details and reaction mechanisms required to access this reactivity. We found that a heterobinuclear complex, (NON)Al- FeCp(CO)2 (1), undergoes reversible Al-Fe bond homolysis at ambient conditions to reveal the [(NON)Al]·/[CpFe(CO)2]· radical pair in situ. The presence of predominantly Al-centered spin density (i.e., an AlII ion) within this radical pair was established using experiments with radical scavengers as well as electronic structure calculations. Exposure of 1 to CO2 atmosphere resulted in insertion of CO2 into the Al-Fe bond. This net 2-electron CO2 reduction process was computationally modeled using quantum chemical calculations and direct dynamics simulations, revealing that reduction involves two 1-electron steps and, thus, depends on stabilization of high-energy [CO2]· - by coordination to aluminum. This mechanism for CO2 activation is unexpected given the canonical predisposition of CO2 for multi-electron reduction processes and demonstrates the possibility of discovering new reaction profiles of earth- abundant elements in unusual oxidation states.

Abstract:A density-functional theory method has been conducted to investigate the association of C + O on (1 1 1) facets of ordered NiCo alloy and the results have been compared with those obtained on pure Ni(1 1 1) surface. In reaction of C + O, the favorable reaction path is that C adsorbed on HCP-1 site moves to the nearest Ni-Co bridge site, and associates with O migrating from FCC-1 site to result in CO adsorbed on the bridge site of Ni-Co. However, the reaction barrier is higher by 0.35 eV than that on pure Ni(1 1 1), which indicates that the incorporation of Co into the Ni crystal is not in favor of the reaction of carbon delimination. Abstract:Non-verbal recall of haptically presented spatial positions by three age groups of blind and sighted children was tested under conditions varying cueing, recall type and stimulus position in a within-subject design. Slighted status was not only significant, but interacted significantly with recall type, and further with stimulus position, consistent with sequential haptic by blind and quasi-simultaneous visual processing by sighted children. Age was significant, but its only significant interaction was a relatively small one with cueing conditions and stimulus position, suggesting that the oldest group, regardless of sightedness, used verbal strategies in pre-cued conditions. The findings support the hypothesis that visual and haptic modalities of representation have demonstrably different effects on processing and efficiency in spatial recall, but counterindicate the hypothesis that these relate differentially to age. Results also suggest that a combination of cue utilization and verbal strategies is a significant, but relatively minor, factor in improvements in spatial recall.
Computational Screening of Single Non-Noble Transition-Metal Atoms Confined Inside Boron Nitride Nanotubes for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Based on density functional theory calculations, the stability and catalytic activity of a series of single non-noble transition-metal (TM) atoms confined on the interior surface of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) with nitrogen vacancy for CO oxidation have been systematically studied. By searching for the reaction pathways of CO oxidation in the Eley–Rideal (ER) mechanism catalyzed by single TM atoms (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn) confined inside BNNT(6,6), we found that Cu–BNNT(6,6) and Mn–BNNT(6,6) are good candidates as highly efficient catalysts, with the energy barriers of the rate-determining step for CO oxidation being 0.24 and 0.37 eV, respectively. Compared with ER reactions, CO oxidation proceeds via the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism with relatively larger energy barriers. We confirmed that the interior surface of BNNT(6,6) provides a better confinement environment than the exterior surface for developing single-atom catalysts. With the appropriate energy barriers, Cu–BNNT(6,6) and Mn–BNNT(6,6) show the satisfactory catalytic performance for CO oxidation.
