Abstract:Coastal wetlands are active transitional ecotones between land and ocean, and are considered as hot spots of organic matter processing within the global carbon cycle, which dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role. In this study, combined use of ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and complementary optical techniques was conducted to assess the detailed molecular composition of DOM in the temperate Liaohe coastal wetland (LCW), NE China in respect to the differences in DOM composition from surface water to sediment pore water. Significant positive correlations between salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were observed in both surface waters and pore waters. Pore water DOM is generally characterized by lower protein-like fluorescence and biological index, but higher humification and humic-like fluorescent components than those in surface water DOM. Corresponding to the optical properties, FT-ICR MS measurements show that pore water DOM has higher proportions of heteroatoms, aromaticity index, O/C ratios, unsaturated aliphatics, and peptides, but lower average H/C ratios compared to surface water DOM across locations with different marsh plant species (rice (Oryza sativa), reed (Phragmites australis), Seablite (Suaeda Salsa)) and salinity (0.5 to 51.5 psu). The results suggest that selective preservation for polyphenols, lignin degradation intermediates (highly unsaturated compounds), and microbial resynthesis of heteroatomic compounds are involved in the processing of DOM from surface water to pore water, leading to the formation of higher molecular weight and sulfur-containing molecules. The abundant CHOS compounds could be related to the early diagenetic sulfurization of DOM in sediments. Our unique data set should provide new clues for a comprehensive understanding of the molecular dynamics of DOM in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Organic carbon (OC) burial in river-dominated ocean margins plays a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle, impacting atmospheric CO2 levels over the long term. Despite its significance, uncertainties persist regarding the influence of external environmental factors and intrinsic properties on sedimentary OC. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of surface sediments from the East China Sea, examining geochemical properties (including total OC content [TOC], Delta C-14, delta C-13, and C/N ratio), terrestrial biomarkers (n-alkanes), and mineral properties (such as specific surface area, Al/Si ratio, and mineral composition). Our aim was to shed light on the fate of sedimentary OC. The surface sediment's Delta C-14 values displayed significant spatial heterogeneity, delineating four distinct sub-regions. Strong positive correlations (all p < 0.01) were found between the triangle C-14 values and fine-grained sediments, specific surface area, and clay minerals, suggesting the potentially pivotal role of mineral protection in shaping the fate of sedimentary OC. The proportion of terrestrial OC gradually decreased towards the south, while marine OC proportion increased, corresponding to the enrichment of Delta C-14. The co-variation of Delta C-14 values, mineral properties, and OC source proportions suggests that terrestrial OC may undergo progressive replacement by marine OC during southward transport. Temporal variations in triangle C-14 values indicated that seabed erosion led to a significant increase in triangle C-14 values (p < 0.01) in the coastal mud belt, a phenomenon likely common in river-dominated ocean margins globally due to the new sediment cycle during the Anthropocene.
Evaluation of fate of organic matter in sediment through microcosm experiments

Abstract:Laboratory microcosm experiments help to understand the degradation pattern of different sources derived from organic matter (OM) at the sediment–water interface and relate it to field processes. Microcosm experiments were carried out for 65 days to assess the degradation of organic materials such as diatoms, zooplankton, and mangrove leaves using source‐specific fatty acid (FA) biomarkers. The viable bacterial population in the microcosm sediment was low on day 1, but on day 3, it increased substantially by two to threefold in all the treatments. An increase in the bacterial population resulted in a decrease in the FAs specific to organic materials during the initial incubation phase (10 days), suggesting the degradation of organic materials derived from different sources. The FAs specific to diatoms showed faster degradation when compared to zooplankton and mangrove‐specific FAs. The degradation of FAs was influenced by the nature of the source material, unsaturation of FAs, and the sediment type. Sandy sediment facilitated higher degradation of diatom and zooplankton‐specific FAs, whereas mangrove‐specific FAs showed higher degradation in silty‐clay sediment. Thus, bacterial community composition coupled with the habitat characteristics, the OM composition, and the grain size of the sediment, influenced the degradation of FAs. The degradation of mangrove‐specific long‐chain FAs was ~1.11–2.5 times higher when spiked with plankton‐derived labile OM from mixed sources, which otherwise took a longer time for degradation pointing toward co‐metabolism (priming effect), which could play a significant role in the cycling of terrestrial plant‐derived OM in an estuarine ecosystem.

Abstract:Biological and chemical stabilization of organic C was assessed in soils sampled from the long-term experiments at Rothamsted (UK), representing a wide range of carbon inputs and managements by extracting labile, non-humified organic matter (NH) and humic substances (HS). Four sequentially extracted humic substances fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) were extracted and characterized before and after a 215-day laboratory incubation at 25 degrees C from two arable soils, a woodland soil and all occasionally stubbed soil. The fractions corresponded to biochemically stabilised SOM extracted in 0.5 M NaOH (free fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA)) and chemically plus biochemically stabilised SOM extracted from the residue with 0.1 M Na4P2O7 Plus 0.1 M NaOH (bound FA and HA). Our aim was to investigate the effects of chemical and biochemical stabilization on carbon sequestration. The non-humic to humic (NH/H) C ratio separated the soils into two distinct groups: arable soils (unless fertilised with farmyard manure) had an NH/H C ratio between 1.05 and 0.71, about twice that of the other soils (0.51-0.26). During incubation a slow, but detectable, decrease in the NH/H C ratio occurred in soils of C input equivalent or lower to 4 Mg ha(-1) y(-1), whereas the ratio remained practically constant in the other soils. Before incubation the free to bound humic C ratio increased linearly (R-2 = 0.91) with C inputs in the soils from the Broadbalk experiment and decreased during incubation, showing that biochemical stabilization is less effective than chemical stabilization in preserving humic C. Changes in delta C-13 and delta N-15 after incubation were confined to the free FA fractions. The delta C-13 of free FA increased by 1.48 and 0.80 parts per thousand, respectively, in the stubbed and woodland soils, indicating a progressive biological transformation. On the contrary, a decrease was observed for the bound FA of both soils. Concomitantly, a Delta delta N-15 of up to +3.52 parts per thousand was measured after incubation in the free FA fraction and a -2.58 Delta delta N-15 in the bound FA. These changes, which occurred during soil incubation in the absence of C inputs, indicate that free FA fractions were utilised by soil microorganisms, and bound FA were decomposed and replaced, in part, by newly synthesized FA.The (13)CPMAS-TOSS NMR spectra of free HA extracted before and after 215 days of incubation were mostly unchanged. Thermal stability of sedimentary organic carbon in a large river dominated marginal sea

Abstract:The thermal stability of organic carbon (OC) in marine sediments is one of the critical factors that influences its burial efficiency in marine environments. However, the distribution patterns and influencing factors of the thermal stability of OC in marginal seas remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted the thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) of OC in surface sediments of the Changjiang Estuary (CE) and its adjacent East China Sea (ECS) shelf. Both labile and refractory organic matter (OML and OMR) contents derived from the TGA were higher in the CE and Zhe-Min Coast (ZMC) mobile muds relative to those in the sandy areas. The average Carbon Reactivity Index (CRI) is 69.3 ± 4.2 %, ranging from 62.8 % to 85.1 %. Most of the stations in the CE and ZMC mobile muds were characterized by relatively low CRI values, while only some stations in the inner estuary and outer shelf had higher CRI values. As a result, the CRI values correlated reversely with the OC contents and positively with the median grain size, especially in sandy sediments. Despite being sandy sediments, there were significant differences in the thermal stability of OC among the three different sandy sediment areas, with the highest CRI value in the inner estuary, lower CRI values in the outer estuary and outer shelf sediments, possibly related to the sources and composition of OC in different regions as shown by the negative correlation between CRI and δ13C for sandy sediments. Compared with certain European marginal seas, the sedimentary OC (SOC) in the CE and ECS shelf exhibits greater thermal stability, which is probably linked to the reduced preservation efficiency of OC caused by the extensive sediment dynamics in this area. This study supports the notion that organo-mineral interactions and the sources are two major factors controlling the reactivity of OC.

Abstract:Most organic carbon delivered to the seafloor is degraded within the bioturbated layer. Theory and empirical evidence have shown that organic carbon reactivity relates to the age of a particle. However, due to particle mixing, the age‐depth linear relation induced by sediment accretion is obfuscated. Here we combine a Lagrangian particle tracking model that resolves the age distribution of particles in the bioturbated zone and couple it to age‐dependent organic carbon degradation. Depth profiles for organic carbon concentration, reactivity and degradation rate are presented for sediments receiving low and high reactivity organic carbon in coastal, continental slope and deep‐sea environments. Our results show that a simple first‐order kinetics model suffices for well‐mixed sediments and systems receiving pre‐processed materials. A reactive continuum approach is needed for poorly mixed sediments receiving highly reactive organic carbon and for sediments below the bioturbated layer.

Abstract:As major sites of carbon burial and remineralization, continental margins are key components of the global carbon cycle. However, heterogeneous sources of organic matter (OM) and depositional environments lead to complex spatial patterns in sedimentary organic carbon (OC) content and composition. To better constrain the processes that control OM cycling, we focus on the East Asian marginal seas as a model system, where we compiled extensive data on the OC content, bulk isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C), total nitrogen, and mineral surface area of surficial sediments from previous studies and new measurements. We developed a spatial machine learning modeling framework to predict the spatial distribution of these parameters and identify regions where sediments with similar geochemical signatures drape the seafloor (i.e., "isodrapes"). We demonstrate that both provenance (44%–77%) and hydrodynamic processes (22%–53%) govern the fate of OM in this margin. Hydrodynamic processes can either promote the degradation of OM in mobile mud‐belts or preserve it in stable mud‐deposits. The distinct isotopic composition of OC sources from marine productivity and individual rivers regulates the age and reactivity of OM deposited on the sea‐floor. The East Asian marginal seas can be separated into three main isodrapes: hydrodynamically energetic shelves with coarser‐grained sediment depleted in OC, OM‐enriched mud deposits, and a deep basin with fine‐grained sediments and aged OC affected by long oxygen exposure times and petrogenic input from rivers. This study confirms that both hydrodynamic processes and provenance should be accounted for to understand the fate of OC in continental margins.

Abstract:Seagrass and macroalgae beds are key blue carbon ecosystems in the ocean. However, coastal development and climate change are sparking a growing concern about the vulnerability of sediment organic carbon (OC) to remineralization after macrophyte perturbation. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the potential of long-term remineralization of sediment OC stocks (1 year) in coastal vegetated habitats (i.e., seagrasses Zostera noltei and Cymodocea nodosa , macroalgae Caulerpa prolifera and unvegetated sediment) after complete disturbance of macrophyte meadows under conducive conditions to microorganisms growth (i.e., oxygen saturated, non-nutrient limitation, turbulence and dark). Leached dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from particulate organic carbon (POC) remineralization, carbonate dissolution and photo-reactivity of long-term persistent DOC were also evaluated. Our results evidenced that, sediment OC from Z. noltei and unvegetated habitats were entirely remineralized to CO 2 . However, sediment OC from C. nodosa and C. prolifera communities exhibited a significant fraction of recalcitrant OC, and therefore, a 42 and 46% of the sediment OC still remained after 1 year of culture, respectively. POC remineralization released relevant amounts of both labile and recalcitrant DOC, which showed low photo-reactivity. Finally, we discuss that the main argument to promote management, monitoring, and restoration programs for macrophytes is usually based on their sediment OC deposit, which favor larger species. The study presented here adds arguments to also include small macrophyte species, since their sediment OC may be highly labile and entirely remineralized to CO 2 once these habitats are disturbed.

Abstract:Benthic microorganisms play a significant role in the remineralization of sedimentary organic matter (OM). In order to constrain the growth rate, turnover and carbon metabolism of microbial communities in anoxic sandy sediments, we quantified the rate of inorganic carbon (IC) assimilation and of lipid production via a recently developed dual isotope-labelling assay that can differentiate autotrophic vs. heterotrophic production in a 22 cm sediment core from the Janssand tidal flat (Wadden Sea, Germany). Despite an extremely low concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in the majority of samples (<0.3%), the concentration of total fatty acids (TFAs) was in the range 4.5 to 28.4 μg/mg TOC, suggestive of a high contribution of fresh microbial and algal biomass to the TOC pool. This was corroborated by a production rate of microbial FAs, which ranged from 0.3 to 4.7 μg TFAs/gdw/yr (where dw = dry wt) and the mean turnover time of microbial FAs was 6 ± 5 yr. The enhanced production rate of iso- and anteiso-branched FAs was consistent with the presence of an active population of sulfate reducing Deltaproteobacteria. The assimilation rate of IC into bacterial lipids was relatively low (0.16 ± 0.07 μg C/gdw/yr) in OM-lean sandy sediments (i.e. upper 17 cm), such that the IC assimilation to lipid production ratio values was typically <0.3, indicating that heterotrophic bacteria were dominant and dark IC fixation played a minor role at the study site. The measured rates of FA production converted to an anaerobic heterotrophic C demand of 0.4–1.8 µg C/gdw/d, assuming a bacterial growth efficiency of 10%. Such high biomass proportion, production rate and C demand suggested that dissolved OM must play a vital role in sustaining the active heterotrophic microbial populations in these sandy sediments.
Spatiotemporal controls on organic matter sourcing to minerogenic salt marshes

Abstract:Salt marshes are important carbon sinks; however, identification of the drivers of carbon burial rates is challenging because estuaries sit at terrestrial and marine interfaces. Here, we address the questions: what are the sources of organic matter sequestered in minerogenic salt marshes, and how do sources change through time? We characterized down‐core sediment biogeochemistry (C : N, δ13C, δ15N) for the last century in seven Oregon USA high marshes and used a mixing model to elucidate differences in organic matter sources across estuaries and through time. Autochthonous biomass production consistently accounted for only half of overall organic matter accumulation, and the remainder was allochthonous, originating from a combination of estuarine and terrestrial sources. Salt marshes with high sediment loads buried more terrestrial organic matter, whereas those with low loads and substantial subtidal habitat buried more estuarine‐derived organic matter. When assessed through depth/time, stable isotope trends indicated that decomposition is not the primary control. Instead, organic matter became increasingly more terrestrial in recent decades, especially in salt marshes with low fluvial loads. We hypothesize that salt marshes with lower loads took longer to regain lost elevation following coseismic subsidence of the 1700 ce Cascadia earthquake. This result magnifies the role of river floods in sediment and carbon accumulation on the marsh surface. Ultimately, the highest carbon burial rates coincided with highest fractions of terrestrially sourced organic matter, though spatiotemporal complexities obscured any potentially significant trends. While the term "blue" typically excludes terrestrial carbon, minerogenic salt marshes still perform the important ecosystem function of burying organic matter.

Long-term carbon sequestration in the Eocene of the Levant Basin through transport of organic carbon from nearshore to deep marine environments

Abstract:This study addresses a specific component associated with mass transport complexes in marine systems: the role of hyperpycnal flows, dense shelf water cascading, submarine canyons, distributary channels, and other transport mechanisms in transferring organic matter from continental and shallow marine settings into deep-marine environments. We speculate that during the Eocene, allowing for only 0.1‰ of shelf carbon to be preserved through transport mechanisms would account for up to 13.7% of all organic carbon burial. As such, the potential to mobilize through this mechanism large quantities of organic carbon is significant. Our case study focuses on a 150 m Eocene sequence composed of organic-rich chalks interleaved with displaced neritic limestones. TOC values range between 1.5 and 14%, averaging 4.5%. Displaced limestones are composed of a variety of poorly cemented mud- and wackestones, with low-diversity assemblages of large benthic foraminifera associated with planktonic foraminifera, suggesting deposition under low-energy conditions within the oligophotic zone on the outer ramp. Transport overprints include soft-sediment deformation, partially lithified rip-ups, folds, small diapirs, bed-scale imbrication, brecciation and syn -sedimentary shear. These features indicate detachment, movement and emplacement following initial sedimentation, in some cases more than once. Emplacement occurs into a chalk facies that can vary in appearance from darker (higher TOC) and lighter (lower TOC) lithofacies. Combination between the sedimentological, petrophysical, and elemental analyses indicates shifts between autochthonous and allochthonous sedimentation, whereas the organic geochemical analysis reveals a correlation between modes of sedimentation and preservation/composition of organic matter. Organic richness seems to increase within intervals of allochthonous sedimentation, with lower TOC values within intervals of autochthonous sedimentation. Organic matter preservation is enhanced due to poor oxygenation of the sea floor, further depleted by rapid burial beneath mass-transport deposits, increasing sedimentation rates and thus organic matter preservation. Horizons rich in organic matter may be derived from three different sources: organic matter with a fingerprint of terrestrial sources (e.g., enhanced contribution of plant leaf waxes) transported from nearshore environments; an allochthonous marine fingerprint with sulfurized hopanoids, which seem to be reworked from pre-existing Cretaceous organic-rich carbonates entrained within fined-grained micro-turbidites in the para-autochthonous facies; and productivity-derived organic matter deposited on the seafloor of the deep marine environment. This study demonstrates how transport mechanisms allow for the long-term burial of organic carbon in marine systems. When taking into consideration similar processes reported to occur in the world oceans today, it is clear that sediment transport and long-term burial of organic carbon is a fundamental part of the global carbon cycle.

Abstract:Continental shelf sediments contain some of the largest stocks of organic carbon (OC) on Earth and play a vital role in influencing the global carbon cycle. Quantifying how much OC is stored in shelf sediments and determining its residence time is key to assessing how the ocean carbon cycle will be altered by climate change and possibly human activities. Spatial variations in terrestrial carbon stocks are well studied and mapped at high resolutions, but our knowledge of the distribution of marine OC in different seafloor settings is still very limited, particularly in dynamic and spatially variable shelf environments. This lack of knowledge reduces our ability to understand and predict how much and for how long the ocean sequesters CO 2 . In this study, we use high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) data from the Eastern Shore Islands offshore Nova Scotia (Canada), combined with OC measurements from discrete samples, to assess the distribution of OC content in seafloor sediments. We derive four different spatial estimates of organic carbon stock: (i) OC density estimates scaled to the entire study region assuming a homogenous seafloor, (ii) interpolation of OC density estimates using empirical Bayesian kriging, (iii) OC density estimates scaled to areas of soft substrate estimated using a high-resolution classified substrate map, and (iv) empirical Bayesian regression kriging of OC density within areas of estimated soft sediment only. These four distinct spatial models yielded dramatically different estimates of standing stock of OC in our study area of 223 km 2 : 80 901, 58 406, 16 437 and 6475 t of OC, respectively. Our study demonstrates that high-resolution mapping is critically important for improved estimates of OC stocks on continental shelves and for the identification of carbon hotspots that need to be considered in seabed management and climate mitigation strategies.

Abstract:A portion of carbon produced from shellfish and kelp cultivation is buried in sedimentary environment, and mariculture carbon sequestration potential is an important part of marine carbon sink and has attracted worldwide attention. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and their stable isotopes (δ 13 C and δ 15 N), as well as the mass distribution of these size-fractionated particles were determined in order to study the distribution and sources of TOC in Sanggou Bay. Results showed that sediment organic matter has complex sources from kelp (30.4 %), marine phytoplankton (25.6 %), shellfish (23.7 %), terrestrial input (20.3 %), and mariculture activities of shellfish and kelp was the major component in surface sediment. Approximately 44–69 % of TOC was associated with the 16–32 μm fraction. Low δ 13 C (−22.1 to −15.1‰) and high δ 15 N (5.0–5.7‰) were observed in fine particles (<16 μm), indicating relatively high contribution of marine phytoplankton and mariculture derived organic carbon. On the contrary, relatively higher δ 13 C (−20.2 to −9.2‰) and lower values δ 15 N (−4.7 to 5.2‰) in coarse particles (>32 μm) suggested that sedimentary organic carbon might be influenced by some additional sources from terrestrial input or seaweed. The mass distribution, δ 13 C and δ 15 N of size-fractionated particles in sediments indicated that sediment was obviously redistributed under the condition of mariculture, and further suggested that mariculture derived organic matter have modified the distribution and sources of sedimentary organic matter. This study provided great insight into distribution and source of sedimentary organic carbon from the perspective of size-fractionated particles in mariculture area.

Abstract:Microbially-mediated transformations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a marsh-dominated estuarine system were investigated at the molecular level using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry. In addition to observing spatial and temporal variability in DOM sources in the estuary, multiple incubations with endogenous microorganisms identified the influence of DOM composition on biodegradation. A clear microbial preference for degradation of compounds associated with marine DOM relative to those of terrestrial origin was observed, resulting in an overall shift of the remaining DOM toward a stronger terrigenous signature. During short, 1-day long incubations of samples rich in marine DOM, the molecular formulae that were enriched had slightly smaller mass (20–30 Da) and number of carbon atoms compared to the molecular formulae that were depleted. Over longer time scales (70 days), the mean differences in molecular mass between formulae that were depleted and enriched were substantially larger (~270 Da). The differences in elemental composition over daily time scales were consistent with transformations in functional groups; over longer time scales, the differences in elemental composition may be related to progressive transformations of functional groups of intermediate products and/or other reactions. Our results infused new data toward the understanding of DOM processing by bacterioplankton in estuarine systems.

Abstract:Abstract The ratio of isotopes of carbon ( 13 C: 12 C or δ 13 C) and nitrogen ( 15 N: 14 N or δ 15 N) are common indicators of the flow and storage of organic matter in coastal wetland research. Effective use of these indicators requires quantification and understanding of: (1) the variability of isotope signatures of potential organic matter source materials; and (2) the influence of organic matter decomposition on isotopic signatures. While it is well-established that organic matter characteristics change during the decomposition process, there has been little direct quantification of any concurrent shifts in isotope signatures for coastal detritus. In this study, we addressed this by quantifying: (1) shifts in sample composition using solid-state 13 C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy; and (2) shifts in δ 13 C and δ 15 N signatures of coastal plant tissues from field litterbag experiments. We observed significant shifts in 13 C NMR spectra across the course of deployment for all four plant tissues assessed (leaves of mangrove Avicennia marina; branchlets of supratidal tree Casuarina glauca; leaf wrack and roots/rhizomes of the seagrass Zostera muelleri ), driven largely by the preferential loss of labile constituents and concentration of more resistant macromolecules, such as lignin and leaf waxes. While there were shifts in isotope ratios for all species, these varied in direction and magnitude among species, tissue type and isotopes. This included δ 13 C enrichments of up to 3.1‰ and 2.4‰ in leaves of A. marina , and branchlets of C. glauca , respectively, but δ 13 C depletions of up to 4.0‰ for Z. muelleri . Shifts in δ 15 N varied among species and tissue types, with few clear temporal patterns. Partial least squares regression analyses showed that some tissue isotope signatures can be reliably predicted on the basis of sample composition ( 13 C NMR spectra), however, multiple inter- and intra-species variations preclude a simple explanation of isotopic signature shifts on the basis of plant-material molecular shifts alone. Further, we cannot preclude the potential influence of microbe-associated organic matter on sample composition or isotopic signatures. Our findings emphasise the importance of considering decomposition effects on stable isotope signatures in blue carbon ecosystems. Isotope approaches will remain a valuable tool in coastal ecosystem research, but require robust experimental approaches (including appropriate use of decomposed end-members or fractionation correction factors; quantification of microbial organic matter) and quantification of decomposition dynamics for specific plant tissues and environmental settings.

Abstract:Post-depositional degradation of organic matter (OM) in freshwater sediments is crucial for driving the biogeochemical dynamics and influencing the carbon burial. This process also often causes diagenetic alteration on paleoenvironmental proxies. Yet, mechanisms behind degradation of sedimentary OM and depth-related variations in stable isotope ratios can so far only be explained in part. Degradation of sedimentary OM in two drinking water reservoirs with contrasting eutrophic and mesotrophic states and different catchment land use (agriculture versus forestry) was studied. A 4-step procedure was used to chemically separate sedimentary OM in terms of biochemical composition. Here we presented depth profiles of biochemical composition of sedimentary OM that helped to quantify preferential degradation of aquatic proteins and carbohydrates and the following removal of aquatic lipids. Sediment in the eutrophic reservoir, which reflected a larger contribution of algal-derived OM than the mesotrophic reservoir with a forest dominated catchment, was therefore subject to more intensive degradation of sedimentary OM along with δ13C and δ15N alterations. In addition, changes in the relative proportions of biochemical components in sedimentary OM had more pronounced impact on δ15N values relative to δ13C. Our findings suggest that the lability of algae-derived OM leads to uncertainties for the estimation of carbon burial in water bodies and obscures paleo-limnological information derived from isotopic proxies. Post-depositional modifications are more pronounced in eutrophic freshwaters that accumulated more readily degradable OM of algal origin in their sediments. Recognition of these modifications will help constrain carbon burial rates of productive lakes and reservoirs and assess the role of reservoirs in carbon cycling.

Abstract:In regulated freshwater ecosystems, the deposition process of organic carbon (OC) in sediment could be affected by all the changes of physical, chemical, and biological factors. To assess different hydrodynamic conditions on the deposition of OC in sediment, the combination of elemental and stable isotope analyses was carried out in two reservoirs: the Huairou Reservoir (HR), which undergoes seasonal water level fluctuation (WLF) like natural lakes, and the Shisanling Reservoir (SR), which undergoes daily WLF for the operation of pumped storage power station. In general, OC concentration and its variation were comparable in the two reservoirs, whereas the OC distribution showed completely different features. The OC burial rate in SR was nearly two times more than in the HR, which reflect the impact of WLFs on the erosion of soil. For the relative contribution of phytoplankton-derived OC (P-OC), macrophyte-derived OC (M-OC), and terrestrial OC (T-OC) in sediment, the T-OC and M-OC in the SR were both higher than those of the HR, whereas the P-OC was markedly lower. Furthermore, the classification of nearshore and offshore sediments suggested that hydrodynamic conditions affected the T-OC import by physical processes and the in situ contributions of P-OC and M-OC with a spatial difference.

Abstract:The biogeochemical cycles of iron and organic carbon (OC) are closely interconnected in terrestrial and aquatic systems. In ocean waters, the concentration of reactive Fe is tightly controlled by soluble organic ligands. In soils, Fe stabilizes OC by forming aggregates that shield OC from degradation. In lake sediments however, the role of Fe in the preservation of OC has not been explored as extensively yet. We investigated Fe-OC interactions in sediment collected from Lake Tantaré, in which two basins are characterized by contrasting redox conditions. These contrasting redox conditions provide an opportunity to assess their importance in the formation of stable Fe-OC complexes. On average, 30.1 ± 6.4 % of total OC was liberated upon reductively dissolving reactive iron. The Fe-associated and the non-Fe-associated OC pools were characterized at the elemental (OC, TN), isotopic (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) and functional group (FTIR) levels. Large differences in OC:Fe and TN:Fe ratios between the two basins were found which were not linked to OM chemical composition but rather to differences in reactive iron concentrations stemming from the higher abundance of iron sulfides in the anoxic basin. Nevertheless, since the affinity of OM for iron sulfides is lower than that for iron hydroxides, using OC:Fe and TN:Fe ratios as a diagnostic tool for the type of OM-Fe interactions should be done with care in anoxic environment. Same caution should be considered for oxic sediments due to the variation of the proportion of iron hydroxides associated with OM from sample to sample.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key component of the global carbon cycle, with rivers delivering significant amounts of DOM to oceans. Urbanization and agricultural land‐use alter the age and chemical composition of riverine DOM, which likely impact the downstream bioavailability of riverine DOM. Here, we use bioreactor incubations of a marine bacterium (Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3D05) to investigate DOM bioavailability from two distinct rivers: the Suwannee River (natural, non‐urbanized), and the Upper Mississippi River Basin (anthropogenically influenced). We measured rates of microbial CO2 production and radiocarbon ages (as Δ14C) to assess DOM remineralization. We observed nearly identical cell densities and degradation patterns for both riverine DOM incubations. Respired DOM Δ14C values were also similar and decreased over time indicative of preferential utilization of recently synthesized "modern" substrates. These findings reveal unexpected similarities in riverine DOM bioavailability, indicating similar short term biological reactivity despite large DOM compositional differences.

Abstract:Outlines of wings from 127 species of North American mosquitoes were digitized. Comparisons were made among several different methods of reducing the information in the resulting coordinates to a series of descriptors that could be used in multivariate analysis. Methods included Fourier analysis of both radii and tangent angle change functions. In addi- tion, the relatively new method of elliptic Fourier analysis was tried. Cluster and ordination analyses based on the various sets of descriptors summarized well the pattern of similarities and differences in wing shapes, but clusters of similar wings do not agree well with traditional taxonomic groupings. The use of elliptic Fourier descriptors appears to be especially promising for future work. (Fourier analysis; morphometrics; mosquitoes; image analysis; feature extrac- tion.)
