Abstract:The presented article discusses recent advances in biomedical applications of classical Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), with a focus on operating principles and associated material considerations. These applications address novel approaches to common biomedical problems from micro-particle sorting for lab-on-a-chip devices to advanced physiological monitoring techniques. 100 papers in the field of MHDs were reviewed with a focus on studies with direct biomedical applications. The body of literature was categorized into three primary areas of research including Material Considerations for MHD Applications, MHD Actuation Devices, and MHD Sensing Techniques. The state of the art in the field was examined and research topics were connected to provide a wide view of the field of biomedical MHDs. As this field develops, the need for advanced simulation and material design will continue to increase in importance in order to further expand its reach to maturity. As the field of biomedical MHDs continues to grow, advances towards micro-scale transitions will continue to be made, maintaining its clinically driven nature and moving towards real-world applications.

Abstract:With the development of economy, there's an unprecedented surge in food demand, necessitating the development of innovative technologies to minimize alterations in food quality. Magnetic field (MF), as a non-thermal technology, possesses a robust potential to mitigate undesirable thermal impacts on nutritional and qualitative attributes of food. This has sparked considerable interest among researchers in exploring the application of MF technology in food sector. The review summarizes the basic biological characteristics of MF, which include bidirectionality, window effect, hysteresis effect, amplification effect, and accumulation effect, as well as its biological mechanism on living organisms including cell membranes, biological macromolecules, and free radicals. A comprehensive summary of the theory and corresponding implications of MF in food processing is provided, including germicidal efficacy and fermentation, food preservation (freezing, chilling storage, supercooling and drying), thawing, extraction, protein modification, seed germination and combined others techniques or functional substance. Finally, key areas for future research are highlighted, and notable deficiencies are proposed. Overall, the purpose of this review is to propel the advancement and practical implementation of MF technology in food processing industry.

Beneficial Effect of Sustainable Magnetic Treatment of Tap Water Investigations with Cultivated Intestinal Epithelial Cells

Abstract:(Electro)magnetic fields have been used as a tap water treatment since more than 60 years to prevent water pipe walls from the unwanted deposition of calcium carbonate. In the meantime a lot of research has been done on the effects of magnetic or electromagnetic treatment of water. Most of them deal with physiochemical aspects and only a few report on biological effects on prokaryotes or cultured mammalian cells. Intestinal health plays a key role in respect to systemic health and the intestinal epithelial barrier comes directly into contact with drinking water, the effect of magnetic tap water treatment on the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier was investigated by measurement of the transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). Moreover, the sensitivity of the intestinal epithelial barrier against oxidative stress was investigated. Since the regeneration process of intestinal epithelial cells is essential for the reconstitution and maintenance of the barrier integrity after injury or traumatization in vivo, this aspect was also examined with water ± magnetic treatment. The animal cell line IPEC-J2 was used for the investigations. Local tap water (= initial source water) was obtained before and after magnetic treatment with water core magnets which show a very weak field strength with high magnetic gradients as a special characteristic. TEER increased by 28.5 ± 6.8% after incubation with the tap water with magnetic treatment when compared to the initial tap water (mean value ± standard deviation; p ≤ 0.01 by the two-tailed Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney rank sum test). Measurement of TEER after oxidative stress showed no marked difference between both tap water samples ± magnetic treatment. In both experimental series there was a significant reduction in TEER by more than 90 % representing a leaky intestinal epithelial cell layer due to oxidative stress. Despite this fact the number of cells in the initial tap water sample was largely decreased whereas the cell density in the treated water samples was much higher. The magnetic treatment of the tap water improved the regeneration of the intestinal epithelial cells by 17.4 ± 7.2% (mean value ± standard deviation; p ≤ 0.05 by the two-tailed Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney rank sum test) when compared with the initial tap water. The results of the study demonstrate that the water core magnets as used here are able to influence tap water and, subsequently, induce beneficial cellular effects on cultured intestinal epithelial cells. Thus, the tap water with magnetic treatment might be able to promote and maintain intestinal and systemic health in vivo.

Abstract:In the present paper, the UV absorbences of pure water and inorganic salt solutions after the synergisticl treatment of the magnetic field along with UV light were studied. The results showed that the UV absorbence of water can be significantly enhanced by the treatment. Through a series of experiments which were carefully designed, the influence of the magnetic field strength on the UV light absorbence was studied and the memorial(relaxation) effect of magnetized water was also measured. The mechanism of synergistic treatment by magnetic field with UV was explored, and the application possibilities of this new technique for disinfection treatment was enquired into.

Abstract:Water resources are of extreme importance for both human society and the environment. However, human activity has increasingly resulted in the contamination of these resources with a wide range of materials that can prevent their use. Nanomaterials provide a possible means to reduce this contamination, but their removal from water after use may be difficult. The addition of a magnetic character to nanomaterials makes their retrieval after use much easier. The following review comprises a short survey of the most recent reports in this field. It comprises five sections, an introduction into the theme, reports on single magnetic nanoparticles, magnetic nanocomposites containing two of more nanomaterials, magnetic nanocomposites containing material of a biologic origin and finally, observations about the reported research with a view to future developments. This review should provide a snapshot of developments in what is a vibrant and fast-moving area of research.

Abstract:Pathogenic bacteria are fetal to human health, requiring cost-effective and safe approaches to be removed from drinking water source. With poly-allylamine-hydrochloride (PAAH) stabilization, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were introduced in this study to remove pathogenic bacteria by electrostatic interaction and magnet capture. High removal efficiency was achieved for four main pathogenic species, as Escherichia, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Bacillus, and over 99.5% of the pathogens can be removed when the bacterial count was less than 10(5) CFU/mL. Related to various species, the MNPs have respective adhesion effects on bacterial cells, which are higher for Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas, due to the mechanisms of external cell structure and ion exchange capacity, but not the zeta potential of bacterial cell surface. With the practical application in real drinking water samples collected from reservoirs in Sheffield and Leeds, the results showed high bacteria removal efficiency (99.48%) and the total bacteria residual counts was as low as 78 CFU/mL, which met the drinking water standard of WHO (<100 CFU/mL). Further toxicity test indicated that no significant genotoxicity or cytoxicity existed in MNPs treated water, suggesting MNPs are biocompatible for safety issues in drinking water. As an effective, easy-operation and low cost technique, MNPs have bright future and great potential in practical drinking water treatment to remove pathogenic bacteria.

One crucial development in the realm of nanomaterials involves the creation of multifunctional materials with specific adsorption properties and ease of recovery, which are integral to water purification efforts. Among these materials, magnetic nanocarriers have emerged as a versatile and efficient means of immobilizing target pollutants for water decontamination. Their effectiveness stems from their expansive surface area, relatively straightforward fabrication, and diverse applications, particularly in environmental remediation processes. This comprehensive review aims to delve into the various classes of magnetic carriers and their roles in removing contaminants from water sources. Each class is examined critically, providing insights into synthesis methodologies, accompanied by noteworthy examples from the literature, and an exploration of the significant contributions these materials offer to the field. Through this review, we seek to provide a thorough understanding of the use of magnetic nanocarriers in addressing the crucial issue of water pollution and highlight their potential to play a pivotal role in achieving cleaner and more sustainable water resources for our growing population.

Abstract:In the past few years, three‐dimensional self‐supporting porous magnetic assemblies (3D‐SPMAs) have emerged as a new research area in materials science because of their combined features of three‐dimensional self‐supporting porous assemblies (3D‐SPAs) and magnetic materials. Due to these attributes, 3D‐SPMAs gain numerous tempting properties such as magnetism‐induced actuating, magnetic shape memory effects, and alternative magnetic field (AMF) induced heat generation, showcasing huge potential in diverse applications stretching over water remediation, actuators, biomedical therapy, etc. Especially, 3D‐SPMAs displayed eminent potential in water remediation for their large processing capacity, remote controllability, and magnetic‐field‐mediated wettability. With the rising interest in 3D‐SPAs, the increasing understanding of magnetic materials, and the flourish of materials preparation technique, an upsurge has appeared in 3D‐SPMAs and thus managing them a class of emerging and promising functional materials. However, currently there are rarely review papers concerning 3D‐SPMAs. In this light, this review aims to express a comprehensive overview of this young field and fuel further innovations for preparation methods and practical applications of 3D‐SPMAs. The focus is placed on the synthetic strategies and applications especially in water remediation. The potential opportunities and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Water contamination by harmful organic and inorganic compounds seriously burdens human health and aquatic life. A series of conventional water purification methods can be employed, yet they come with certain disadvantages, including resulting sludge or solid waste, incomplete treatment process, and high costs. To overcome these limitations, attention has been drawn to nanotechnology for fabricating better-performing adsorbents for contaminant removal. In particular, magnetic nanostructures hold promise for water decontamination applications, benefiting from easy removal from aqueous solutions. In this respect, numerous researchers worldwide have reported incorporating magnetic particles into many composite materials. Therefore, this review aims to present the newest advancements in the field of magnetic composites for water decontamination, describing the appealing properties of a series of base materials and including the results of the most recent studies. In more detail, carbon-, polymer-, hydrogel-, aerogel-, silica-, clay-, biochar-, metal–organic framework-, and covalent organic framework-based magnetic composites are overviewed, which have displayed promising adsorption capacity for industrial pollutants.

Abstract:Hydrogel is one of the hottest biomaterials in recent years. Especially, magnetic hydrogels (MHs) prepared by combining unique magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with hydrogels have attracted wide attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, absorbability and rich magnetic properties (magnetocaloric, magnetic resonance imaging and intelligent response, etc.). However, the current literature mainly focuses on the application of MHs, without fully understanding the relationship between the design strategies and applications of each function in MHs. This review highlights six major functional properties of MHs, including mechanical properties, adsorption, magnetocaloric effect, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, intelligent response and biocompatibility. Principles and design strategies of each performance are thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, the latest applications of MHs in biomedicine, soft actuators, environmental protection, chemistry and engineering in recent 5 years are introduced from the perspective of each function. In the carefully selected representative cases, the design strategies and application principle of multi-functional MHs are detailed, respectively. The classical fabrication processing of MHs is summarized. At last, we discuss the unmet needs and potential future challenges in MHs development and highlight its emerging strategies.

Abstract:Recently, magnetic fields (MFs) have received major attention due to their potential therapeutic applications and biological effects. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the cellular and molecular impacts of MFs, with a focus on both in vitro and in vivo studies. We investigate the mechanisms by which MFs influence cell behavior, including modifications in gene expression, protein synthesis, and cellular signaling pathways. The interaction of MFs with cellular components such as ion channels, membranes, and the cytoskeleton is analyzed, along with their effects on cellular processes like proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Molecular insights are offered into how MFs modulate oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, which are pivotal in various pathological conditions. Furthermore, we explore the therapeutic potential of MFs in regenerative medicine, cancer treatment, and neurodegenerative diseases. By synthesizing current findings, this article aims to elucidate the complex bioeffects of MFs, thereby facilitating their optimized application in medical and biotechnological fields.

Abstract:Efficiently-loaded, controlled-release nanofertilizer systems improve fertilizer use efficiency, germination percentage, root and shoot length, seedling growth, and can overcome the problem of the ever-increasing cost of agrochemicals and their inherent post-application losses, which lead to severe soil, water, and eatable commodity pollution. In this study, magnetized distilled waters (MDWs) with various physicochemical characteristics have been used to enhance the urea loading efficiency into mesoporous nano silica (mNS). The mNS was in-house synthesized by a sol-gel method and characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), and thermogravimetric (TGA)/differential thermal analyzer (DTA) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). We then compared the effects of magnetized and normal water, mNS, urea-loaded mNS, and bare urea on the germination of wheat seeds under laboratory conditions. Comparing to mNS in DW, we detected an increase in root (4-fold) and shoot (1.85-fold) lengths when using mNS in MDW. The root and shoot length in case of urea loaded mNS in normal DW and MDW were 2.05 and 1.77 times more, respectively. The germination percentage and root and shoot length increased significantly in accordance to the exposure to 0.5% (w/v) mNS in magnetized water (mNS-MDW) and urea loaded mNS in magnetized water (mNSU-MDW) as compared to same treatment with mNS in distilled water (mNS-DW). Our findings show that the unfavorable effects of urea fertilizer on seed germination, seedling growth, and early plant growth on paper towels can be ameliorated, at least partially, by supplementation with mNSU-MDW. We conclude that mNS-MDW and mNSU-MDW might be effective alternatives for sustained and effective means of fertilizer use efficiency during wheat seed germination.

Exposure effect of magnetic field on olive mill wastewater properties

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the influence of applying a magnetic field (MF) on olive mill wastewater (OMW) by analyzing physiochemical characteristics and identifying and quantifying the organic compounds of OMW before and after magnetization. The investigated OMW was generated from 3-phase and 2-phase oil extraction processes, which were magnetized using either recirculating batch magnetization (RBM) or single-pass continuous flow magnetization (SPM). The results revealed that 3-phase and 2-phase OMW differ significantly in their characteristics and organic content, which was reflected on the capability of MF to alter those characteristics and organic content. Regardless of the OMW type and magnetization mode, MF was found to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) (13.0–34.9%), reduce total phenol (TPh) (3.0–35.6%), increase the electrical conductivity (EC) by up to 14.0%, and negligibly change the pH. The changes in the physiochemical characteristics were found to be approximately independent of MF exposure time, as no momentous change (< 5%) in the characteristics was noticed by changing the flow rate in the SPM or the number of cycles in RBM. The Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of OMW revealed that MF can alter the OMW organic content. Nevertheless, the relation between the degree of alteration and the MF exposure time gives us a simple illustration, and more investigation should be done.

Abstract:Magnetogenetics emerges as a transformative approach for modulating cellular signaling pathways through the strategic application of magnetic fields and nanoparticles. This technique leverages the unique properties of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to induce mechanical or thermal stimuli within cells, facilitating the activation of mechano- and thermosensitive proteins without the need for traditional ligand-receptor interactions. Unlike traditional modalities that often require invasive interventions and lack precision in targeting specific cellular functions, magnetogenetics offers a non-invasive alternative with the capacity for deep tissue penetration and the potential for targeting a broad spectrum of cellular processes. This review underscores magnetogenetics' broad applicability, from steering stem cell differentiation to manipulating neuronal activity and immune responses, highlighting its potential in regenerative medicine, neuroscience, and cancer therapy. Furthermore, the review explores the challenges and future directions of magnetogenetics, including the development of genetically programmed magnetic nanoparticles and the integration of magnetic field-sensitive cells for in vivo applications. Enhancing salt tolerance and crop growth in agricultural systems: the impact of magnetized-ionized water irrigation on soil properties, microbial communities, and cotton growth

Abstract:Background: The development of agricultural practices requires an understanding of the improvement of salt tolerance and crop growth in agricultural systems through magnetized-ionized water irrigation. Method: This study examined the impacts of fresh water (F), brackish water (B), magnetized-ionized fresh water (MIF), and magnetized-ionized brackish water (MIB) on soil properties and the growth of cotton seedlings through microbial analysis during the cotton seedling period. Results: The results revealed that magnetized-ionized water irrigation improved soil water retention and promoted salt leaching. In comparison with F irrigation, plant height, leaf area index (LAI), dry matter accumulation (DM), and chlorophyll content (SPAD) levels increased by 3.61%, 4.07%, 5.76%, and 1.33%, respectively, under MIF irrigation. Similarly, when compared with B irrigation, LAI, DM, and SPAD increased by 5.13%, 6.12%, and 3.12% under MIB irrigation. Magnetized-ionized water irrigation also led to a notable rise in the relative abundance of beneficial soil bacterial communities, particularly Pseudomonas and Azoarcus, as well as fungal communities like Trichoderma, while reducing the prevalence of pathogenic fungi, such as Lasionectria, Gibberella, and Alternaria. Notably, this irrigation approach induced alterations in soil properties, and partial least squares path modeling revealed significant links between soil properties and both cotton growth and fungal community structure (with path coefficients of -0.884 and 0.693, respectively). Conclusion: This study elucidated the distinct effects of soil properties and growth indices on cotton yield during the seedling period, providing a crucial scientific foundation for enhancing future agricultural production through the use of magnetized-ionized water irrigation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Numerous activities, including rapid industrialization, population increase, and agricultural practices, have continuously contaminated freshwater resources. One of the main risks to aquatic life and human health is water pollution, which can lead to a number of extremely dangerous illnesses, including cancer, asthma, and gastrointestinal problems. The contaminated wastewater could be cleaned using a variety of traditional and cutting-edge techniques. In order to solve these problems, scientists have been investigating a number of treatment techniques, such as adsorption, which uses adsorbents to effectively and selectively remove particular pollutants. Adsorption is the most widely used economical and effective method for treating wastewater and eliminating dangerous contaminants. The surface characteristics of the adsorbents utilized, such as their surface area and availability of functional groups, are what primarily determine the efficacy of adsorption. Since different carbon derivatives derived from waste are used as adsorbents to remove harmful pollutants, nanomaterials have been used as effective adsorbents in recent times because of their superior surface qualities. Particularly magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), magnetic adsorbents have shown great promise as an adsorbent material for water filtration. It is appropriate for the adsorption of numerous pollutants due to its large surface area, supermagnetism, and simplicity of functionalization. In order to eliminate harmful contaminants including heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from wastewater, this review paper critically examined the synthesis of nanomaterials, with a focus on green synthesis. It is anticipated that this kind of multidisciplinary research would lead to more advancements in advanced nanotechnology and nanoscience in the water treatment industry.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceuticals in water resources is a growing concern worldwide due to their potential health impacts on aquatic life and humans. Therefore, there is a need to develop effective and sustainable technologies for removing these contaminants from water and wastewater. Magnetic nanomaterials have emerged as promising materials for this purpose due to their fast kinetics, easy magnetic separation, and reuse. This review is important as it highlights the significance of developing sustainable technologies using magnetic iron-based nanomaterials for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water resources. This review investigated the application of magnetic nanomaterials for removing pharmaceuticals from water resources through adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. Here, the synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanomaterials and analytical detection techniques were evaluated. The review findings indicate that magnetic nanomaterials effectively removed pharmaceuticals from water through adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. More importantly, the removal processes remained effective for many cycles. However, only 22% of the studies demonstrated the application of magnetic nanomaterials on real water samples, as 78% stopped at experiments using distilled water in the laboratory. Further research on multi-component systems and real water samples is necessary to fully evaluate the potential of magnetic nanomaterials for pharmaceutical removal from water resources.
