Abstract:This research presents and confirms an intermediary model, deeply anchored in self-determination theory, to dissect the influence of Chinese high school students' core psychological needs and intrinsic drive on the nexus between educators' autonomous backing and students' proficiency in feedback literacy, highlighting the mediating roles of these elements. A survey of 704 Chinese senior high school students, including 319 males and 385 females, employed the Feedback Literacy Scale, Basic Psychological Needs Scale, Intrinsic Motivation Scale, and Perceived Teacher Autonomy Support Scale. The study's discoveries illuminate that educators' autonomous support not only directly amplifies students' feedback literacy but also has an indirect impact through the intermediation of basic psychological needs and intrinsic motivation, along with their interconnected dynamics. This inquiry not only deepens our grasp of the mechanisms interlinking teacher support with feedback literacy but also critically evaluates the findings to proffer targeted recommendations, thereby enhancing our comprehension of the underlying processes and guiding educational practices and student development.
Perceived teacher autonomy support for adolescents’ reading achievement: The mediation roles of control-value appraisals and emotions

Abstract:Analyzing students’ internal cognitive-motivational appraisals and achievement emotions is of pivotal importance for educational outcomes and student individual wellbeing, yet little is shown about their associations with teacher autonomy support. This study investigates the relationship between perceived teacher autonomy support and reading achievement by addressing mediating influences of control and value-related constructs, i.e., reading self-efficacy, meaning in life, and reading enjoyment. Multiple mediation modeling was adopted to test the proposed model with carrying out a total of 12,058 students from 361 schools in China in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 reading database. The results elucidated that student-perceived teacher autonomy support is significantly positively related to adolescents’ reading outcomes by fostering internal control and value appraisals and academic enjoyment. These current findings confirm the positive correlation between teacher autonomy support and adolescents’ motivational and emotional factors, providing significant practical implications for educators to adopt various teaching strategies to enhance adolescents’ self-efficacy, intrinsic values, and positive emotions.

Abstract:In view of the neglect of previous studies on the relationship between how to provide feedback to students and how students should absorb feedback, this study constructed a multi-medium structural equation model and conducted a validation study on it. To this end, 704 senior high school students in China (45.31% male, 54.69% female, 43.47% in grade one, 28.69% in grade two, and 27.84% in grade three), were investigated by using students' feedback literacy scale, perceived teachers' emotion support questionnaire, critical reflection scale and cognitive reappraisal scale. The results showed that teachers' emotion support can directly promote students' feedback literacy, and can also indirectly promote students' feedback literacy through cognitive reappraisal, critical reflection and their chain relationships. It is of great benefit for educators to construct and implement students' feedback literacy intervention programs and improve feedback practice effect.

Abstract:<span>This study examined the role of academic self-concept, mastery goals, and academic emotions as mediators in the relationship between perceived teacher autonomy support and student engagement in maths and literacy domains. Questionnaires completed by 854 students in Grades 4 and 5 in China show that perceived teacher autonomy support positively related to students' behavioural and cognitive engagement in learning both maths and literacy; however, the mechanisms of these relationships varied in the two subjects. When learning maths, perceived teacher autonomy support positively related to student engagement mainly through academic self-concept, mastery goals, and academic emotions; but when learning literacy, perceived teacher autonomy support directly related to student engagement and indirectly via academic self-concept. Moreover, enjoyment was more closely linked with maths engagement than literacy engagement. Findings contribute to understanding how teacher autonomy support influences maths and literacy learning and highlight the necessity to provide subject-specific guidance for future educational intervention.</span>

Abstract:With the growing need to nurture students' independent learning, English language teaching (ELT) practices should reflect student-centered assessment approaches, such as self-assessment, an ultimate goal of higher education. It has been pointed out that to conduct effective self-assessment, students need to be taught systematically, and that is where teachers are expected to step in. Prior to implementing such a change in ELT, it is important to conduct research on English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers' attitudes toward, and self-efficacy beliefs about, implementing self-assessment to cultivate capable student self-assessors. Although the strong global endorsement of self-assessment over the past two decades has witnessed its classroom implementation in different disciplines, such studies are scant in relation to EFL writing classrooms. To address this gap, the present qualitative research examined five Chinese tertiary EFL writing teachers' attitudes toward and self-efficacy beliefs about student self-assessment of writing, as well as possible reasons that discourage them from engaging students in self-assessment practices. Data collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews indicated that self-assessment, a critical element of self-regulated learning, is surprisingly missing from the teachers' knowledge base and previous practices. Additionally, the findings offer insights into the striking differences in teachers' understanding of, attitudes toward, and low self-efficacy beliefs about self-assessment of writing. Reasons why teachers choose not to implement self-assessment of writing are also discussed. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how EFL teachers' attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs are enacted in relation to their classroom assessment practices in order to move forward discussions on the feasibility of implementing self-assessment of writing in tertiary EFL classrooms.

Abstract:Introduction: The capacity to speak English for academic purposes is a pivotal facet of language education and assessment. Despite the substantial research approving the significant role of teachers in L2 learning, it remains unclear how exactly teachers' support for students' learning autonomy influences EFL learners' academic English speaking performance. Methods: To address this primary concern, this study drew ground from the Self-System Model of Motivational Development (SSMMD) and adopted a mixed-method approach to examine teacher autonomy support's direct and indirect effects on Chinese EFL undergraduates' academic English speaking performance through the mediation of basic psychological needs and classroom engagement. 247 first-year university students participating in academic English speaking courses were recruited in this study. Results and discussion: The quantitative results of the questionnaire indicated that students' perceived teacher support for autonomy directly predicted English speaking performance, and it also indirectly influenced students' speaking performance via the mediation of classroom engagement and basic psychological needs. Students' responses in the semi-structured interview further verified the positive effect of teacher autonomy support on academic English speaking development in the classroom. Pedagogical implications were also discussed based on the findings.

Abstract:The CYP27 gene is expressed in arterial endothelium, macrophages, and other tissues. The gene product generates sterol intermediates that function as ligands for nuclear receptors prior to their transport to the liver for metabolism, mostly to bile acids. Most attention has been given to 27-hydroxycholesterol as a ligand for LXR activated receptors and to chenodeoxycholic acid as a ligand for farnesoid X activated receptors (FXRs). Expression of the pathway in macrophages is essential for normal reverse cholesterol transport. Thus, ABC transporter activity is upregulated, which enhances cholesterol efflux. Absence of these mechanisms probably accounts for the accelerated atherosclerosis that occurs in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. Accumulation of 27-hydroxycholesterol in human atheroma is puzzling and may reflect low levels of oxysterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity in human macrophages. The same enzyme determines the proportion of mono-, di-, and tri-hydroxy bile acids synthesized in the liver. Oxysterol 7alpha-hydroxylase deficiency is a molecular basis for cholestatic liver disease. Chenodeoxycholic acid, the major normal end product, downregulates expression of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase via the FXR/short heterodimer protein nuclear receptor and thus limits total bile acid production. The challenge is to quantify in a physiologic setting the magnitude of the pathway in different tissues and to further evaluate the biologic roles of all the intermediates that may function as ligands for orphan nuclear receptors or via other regulatory mechanisms.
The effect of parental and teacher autonomy support and core self-evaluations: a three-wave longitudinal study of middle students' career adaptability

Abstract:Introduction: According to career construction theory, middle school students are in a critical phase of growth and exploration that requires self-reflection on their interests, values, and aspirations. Career adaptability is a key indicator of career development for middle school students and a crucial ability for achieving career success. Research indicates that many Chinese middle school students face significant hurdles in their career development, including a lack of motivation, limited self-awareness, and unclear career trajectories. Objective: To address these challenges, it is imperative to explore the factors influencing career adaptability, with a particular focus on the role of parental and teacher autonomy support within the framework of self-determination theory. This study aims to explore the correlation between parental autonomy support (PAS), teacher autonomy support (TAS), core self-evaluations (CSE), and career adaptability (CA) among middle school students. Methodology: The longitudinal data for this study were collected from two middle schools in the Anhui province. Middle school students were recruited as research participants through a cluster sampling method. A total of 482 students were surveyed in three stages during a 1-year period, and a cross-lag model was employed to analyze the data. Results: (1) From T1 to T2, T1PAS predicted T2CS, T1CSE predicted T2CA, and T1CA predicted T2TA; (2) from T2 to T3, T2PAS predicted T3CS, T2CSE predicted T3CA, and T2TAS predicted T3PAS; (3) TAS did not predict CSE and CA over time; (4) T2CSE mediated the relationship between T1PAS and T3CA. Discussion: These findings suggest that autonomy support has a consistently positive influence on the career development of early adolescents. Valuing children's autonomy is beneficial for fostering positive self-evaluations and shaping their career trajectories. Conclusion: Autonomy support plays a pivotal role in enhancing middle school students' career adaptability and promoting career development by strengthening self-evaluations. Additionally, the effect of parental autonomy support is more stable than that of teacher autonomy support.
Influence of Psychological Need-Based Teachers’ Autonomy Support on Effectiveness and Engagement in English Learning

Abstract:It is to explore the effects of psychological needs and teachers’ autonomy support on students’ English learning, hoping to provide a realistic basis for the innovation of English teaching. Four hypotheses are proposed first, and 420 students are then randomly selected from seven classes in Xi’an Ai Zhi Zhong Xue in Shaanxi Province as the research subjects, with 420 questionnaires distributed. After invalid questionnaires are excluded, a total of 400 valid questionnaires are collected. Then, SPSS26.0 is employed to analyze the collected scale data. The average value of emotional exhaustion and the average value of low sense of achievement are relatively close in the direction of English learning burnout, which are larger than that in the other two directions. The three directions in English learning burnout are positively correlated with each other. The three directions in English learning engagement are positively correlated with those of psychological needs. Besides, there is an obvious positive correlation between the three directions of English learning engagement with teachers’ autonomy support ( p < 0.01). However, the three directions in teachers’ autonomy support and the three directions in psychological needs are all negatively correlated with English learning burnout ( p < 0.01). To sum up, the psychological needs of middle school students are effectively met, and teachers’ autonomy support can obviously promote the effectiveness and engagement of middle school students’ English learning.

Abstract:The rapid development of information technology has accelerated the process of educational informatization, the level of which has also been significantly elevated. New teaching informatization modes, such as mobile terminal and online learning, can meet learners’ trans-time-and-space and personalized learning needs. As the main form of teaching evaluation, formative evaluation can provide students with timely and efficient feedback, change teachers’ teaching progress, effectively improve the teaching effect and students’ learning effect, and comprehensively promote students’ autonomous learning ability. In this study, undergraduate students majoring in English for Science and Technology (EST) in five universities of science and engineering in Xi'an city of China, were chosen as research object to explore the influence of formative evaluation (self-evaluation, peer review, and teacher evaluation) on students’ autonomous learning ability in online learning. Thereafter, the moderating effect of self-efficacy on the influence of formative evaluation on students’ autonomous learning ability was analyzed. Results showed that the Cronbach’s α coefficient value of the questionnaire designed in this study was 0.852 and the KMO value was 0.831, indicating its excellent reliability and validity. Evidently, self-evaluation and teacher evaluation can promote the improvement of autonomous learning ability. Self-efficacy plays a moderating role in the promoting effect of formative evaluation on autonomous learning ability. The effect of formative evaluation on autonomous learning ability varies significantly with its frequency of use. Conclusions in this study are of significant reference values for improving the teaching quality of EST through formative evaluation, enhancing the enthusiasm and motivation of college students, and improving the online classroom evaluation system.
Self-assessment in the process of self-regulated learning and its relationship with academic achievement

Abstract:Despite the theoretical argument and empirical evidence regarding the impact of self- assessment on academic achievement and self-regulated learning (SRL), the mechanism for this impact is understudied. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of self-assessment practices at different SRL phases and its relationship with academic achievement. Using a course assignment as the learning task, sixty-three students enrolled in a one-year master programme in a teacher education institute responded to an instrument assessing their self-assessment practices (including four self-assessment actions) at the SRL Preparatory, Performance and Appraisal phases of the task. Their final scores of the assignment were also collected. The results showed that self-assessment is a fundamental skill for SRL and occurs at each SRL phase with different patterns. Autoregressive relationships were found for all self-assessment actions between different SRL phases. Self-reflection at Performance phase was found to influence feedback seeking at Appraisal phase. Self-directed feedback seeking through monitoring at Performance phase was the strongest and positive predictor of academic achievement; and achievement had negative impact on all self-assessment actions at Appraisal phase. This study may assist educators and researchers to better understand the complexity of self-assessment in relation to learning process.

Abstract:Effects of fifteen particulate objects, fourteen metals and one non-metal on cell viability of osteoblast-like cells were studied in vitro, to determine whether an adverse effect on cells could be induced by the particulate form or soluble ions. The Al, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and Fe particulates depressed cell viability at higher particulate concentrations, but their extracts yielded no effect on cells except for Mo. On the other hand, little difference in cell viability between particulates and extracts was observed for Cu, Si, V, W, and Co. However, Mn and Ni yielded more adverse effects on cells in the case of the particulates than the extracts. These findings suggested that the effects of particulates on cells depended upon the direct effects of contact between particulates and cells, the indirect effects of dissolved ions and the kinds of particulate elements.
Investigation of Chinese University Students’ Attributions of English Language Learning

Abstract:Despite the importance of developing students’ learning autonomy in Chinese schools similar to Western cultured schools, many concerns are raised regarding the influence and effectiveness that learner autonomy has on students’ academic achievements. The aim of this study was to identify the attribution patterns of Chinese university students for success and failure toward students who learnt through autonomy learning (student-centered approaches) compared with students who learnt through teacher-centered approaches. Within this study, mixed research methods were adopted, and students used a reflective method to distinguish whether they were taught English through a traditional or student-centered method. The findings of the study reveal that there are no significant differences in attributional patterns between students who had learnt in high school through autonomous learning and those who learnt through teacher-centered approaches. The findings have implications for policy and practice in the Chinese Ministry of Education system and recommendations for future research.

The Impact of Writing Self-Assessment and Peer Assessment on Iranian EFL Learners’ Autonomy and Metacognitive Awareness

Abstract:One of the most significant current discussions in writing is self-assessment and peer assessment. This study aimed to investigate the impact of writing self-assessment and peer assessment on autonomy and metacognitive awareness of Iranian EFL learners. One hundred and twenty participants were selected using convenience sampling. Four instruments were used in this test: (1) Nelson placement test; (2) Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI); (3) Zhang and Li’s autonomy questionnaire; and (4) rubric. A quasiexperimental design was used in this study. They were divided into two experimental groups, self-assessment (N = 40) and peer assessment (N = 40), and one control group (N = 40). Collected data were tested and compared using covariance analysis (ANCOVA). Results from the tests indicated that both self-assessment and peer assessment are effective ways to improve autonomy and metacognition awareness of EFL learners in the completion of writing tasks. Findings also showed that self-assessment was more effective than peer assessment and the results showed that the types of assessments increased the learners’ knowledge in the writing, teaching, lexicography, spelling, grammar, and similar models and were significantly effective in developing their writing skills. The findings of the present research study might have some implications for researchers, instructors, language teachers, and language learners.
The effects of teacher immediacy and autonomy support on secondary students' approaches to learning

Abstract:Teachers are closely connected with secondary students and have an impact on students' approaches to learning and academic results. The present study aimed to explore the effects of teacher immediacy and autonomy support on junior high students' approaches to learning. We conducted a questionnaire survey with 232 junior high school students and found that both teacher immediacy and autonomy support were positively related to students' deep approach to learning, with the dual-pathway mediating roles of positive academic emotion and academic efficacy. Regression results showed that when participants perceived their teachers to have both high levels of immediacy and autonomy support, they reported the highest level of deep approach to learning. No significant results were found in the influence of teacher immediacy, autonomy support, and the interaction effect on surface approach to learning. The implications and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:Teacher support plays a role in promoting students' motivations in the academic settings, but little is known about how teacher support impacts students' creative self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between perceived teacher support and students' creative self- efficacy, taking into account the possible mediating effects of autonomous motivation and achievement emotions. A total of 512 junior high school students (age M = 12.58, SD = 0.74) completed the Perceived Teacher Support Questionnaire, Adolescent Achievement Emotions Questionnaire, Self-Regulation Style Questionnaire-Academic and Students' Creative Self-Efficacy Scale. Results showed that: (1) junior high school students' autonomous motivation and positive achievement emotions (enjoyment and relaxation) mediated the relationship between perceived teacher support and creative self-efficacy, but the mediating effects of negative achievement emotions (anxiety and boredom) were not significant. (2) perceived teacher support also affected creative self-efficacy through the chain mediation of students' autonomous motivation and relaxation, but the chain mediation of students' autonomous motivation and other achievement emotions was not significant. The present study has implications for educators and researchers interested in enhancing students' creativity.

Abstract:Academic achievement reflects students' learning outcomes over a period of time and serves as a crucial gauge of student learning levels, as well as a focal point of societal interest. To investigate the impact of teacher support on academic achievement and its mechanism of action, this study introduces two mediating variables-academic self-efficacy and academic emotions-to construct a chain mediation model, and conducts a survey among 800 university students in Nanjing. The findings reveal that teacher support directly impacts academic achievement; academic self-efficacy mediates the effect of teacher support on academic achievement; academic emotions also mediate the effect of teacher support on academic achievement; and there is a chain mediating effect of academic self-efficacy and academic emotions in the relationship between teacher support and academic achievement. This research elucidates the relationship between teacher support and academic achievement, providing a theoretical foundation and practical recommendations for enhancing the academic performance of university students.

Abstract:Background: In the evolving landscape of Chinese education, understanding the factors that influence the emotional health and engagement of English language learners is increasingly vital. Against this backdrop, our study delves into how teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support impact these key educational outcomes. Aim: This study investigates the roles of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support in influencing the emotional health and engagement of English language learners in China. Method: Involving a diverse sample of 68 English Language Teachers and their 389 students from various Chinese universities, the study leverages a convenience sampling method. Results: Key findings indicate that students' emotional health is predominantly influenced by peer support, while student engagement is significantly affected by a combination of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, peer support, and teachers' harmony. These outcomes highlight the importance of both teacher behavior and peer relationships in educational settings, underscoring their crucial roles in enhancing student well-being and engagement. The study's methodology, incorporating a diverse sample from multiple educational institutions and a comprehensive analytical approach, offers robust insights. However, the limitations of convenience sampling and reliance on self-reported data necessitate a careful interpretation of the findings. Implications: Implications from this research are vital for educational policy and practice, emphasizing the need for interventions that enhance teacher-student relationships and foster supportive peer environments. This study adds to the body of knowledge on factors influencing emotional health and engagement among English language learners, advocating for a comprehensive approach in educational strategies and interventions.

Abstract:Informed by social support theory and control-value theory, this study investigates the predictive role of teacher support on classroom flow among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy. A survey was conducted among 557 Chinese university EFL learners to gather relevant data. Descriptive statistics indicate that the participants exhibited a moderate level of classroom flow and exhibited significant variations based on gender and grade. Analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that teacher support has a noteworthy, positive predictive impact on EFL learners' classroom flow. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy serves as a partial mediator between teacher support and classroom flow, with instrumental and emotional teacher support showing the strongest indirect effects. Notably, various dimensions of teacher support, aligning with students' psychological needs as outlined by self-determination theory, have unique predictive effects on both classroom flow and academic self-efficacy. Appraisal and informational teacher support have the greatest predictive influence on classroom flow among the teacher support considered. The findings enhance understanding of the dynamics between teacher support, academic self-efficacy, and classroom flow, offering practical implications for creating autonomy-supportive educational environments that can elevate EFL learners' engagement and academic achievements.
