Abstract:Acupuncture has been widely used in stroke and post-stroke rehabilitation (PSR), but there is no literature on the bibliometric analysis of acupuncture for stroke. This study aimed to characterize the global publications and analyze the trends of acupuncture for stroke in the past 40 years. We identified 1157 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection. The number of publications grew slowly in the first three decades from 1980 until it started to grow after 2010, with significant growth in 2011–2012 and 2019–2020. China, the USA, and South Korea are the top three countries in this field, and China has formed good internal cooperative relations. Early studies focused on the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for stroke. In the last five years, more emphasis has been placed on the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating sequelae and complications, combined with neuroimaging studies to explore the mechanisms of brain injury repair and neurological recovery. Acupuncture for stroke has a vast research potential, and researchers from different countries/regions and organizations still need to remove academic barriers to enhance communication and collaboration.

Abstract:Background: Patients with post-stroke depression (PSD) usually experience anxiety, hopelessness, and insomnia, which have a negative impact on their daily activities and post-stroke rehabilitation. Acupuncture (AC), as a minimally invasive technique, has become a popular choice for improving depression symptoms. However, it is still unclear which therapy is associated with the best outcomes for PSD. In this review, we aimed to explore the impact of AC in alleviating symptoms of PSD and to evaluate the difference in effectiveness between AC combined with pharmacotherapies and various non-pharmacotherapies. Methods: Six databases and three clinical trials registration platforms were searched from inception to March 2023. Randomized clinical trial comparing needle-based AC with pharmacotherapy, and other non-pharmacotherapy or invalid group were included. Two independent reviewers identified eligible studies, and collected data using a pre-made form. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was conducted to assess and compare different techniques using RStudio 3.6.0 with the package 'GEMTC' V.0.8.1. The primary outcome was the efficacy for PSD assessed by scales measuring depressive symptoms. The secondary outcomes were effectiveness for neurological function and the quality of life. The ranking probabilities for all treatment interventions was performed using the Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking curve (SUCRA). The risk of bias was assessed by using the Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2. Results: Sixty-two studies, involving 5308 participants published from 2003 to 2022, were included. The results showed that compared with western medicine (WM) (defined as pharmacotherapy for PSD), AC alone or with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS), Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) alone or with WM, were superior for alleviating depression symptoms. Compared to Usual Care, AC alone or plus other therapies could significantly decrease scores on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale. According to result of SUCRA, AC plus RTMS had the highest probability of improving depressive symptoms with a probability of 49.43%. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that AC alone or combined with other therapies appears to be effective in improving depression symptoms of stroke survivors. Moreover, in comparison to WM, AC alone or plus RTMS, TCM, TCM with WM, or WM, were more effective in improving depression symptoms of PSD. Also, AC with RTMS seems to be the most effective with the highest probability. Registration: This study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database in November 2020 and updated in July 2021. Abstract:Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common stroke complication that is characterized by hopelessness, anxiety, disordered sleep, and lowered responsiveness. Rehabilitation and acupuncture treatments are often combined to treat PSD; however, there has been no meta-analysis on their synergistic effect. Therefore, we aim to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the effectiveness of acupuncture and rehabilitation in PSD treatment. Methods: We will search the following electronic databases: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wan Fang databases. We will include studies published between the database initiation and May 2020. Two reviewers will separately conduct study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. Disputes will be settled by consulting a third reviewer. Review Manager Software 5.3 will be employed for this meta-analysis. Results: This systematic review will assess whether acupuncture combined with rehabilitation treatment is more effective than rehabilitation alone in the management of PSD. Conclusion: This systematic review will provide evidence regarding the synergistic effect of acupuncture and rehabilitation treatment for PSD.

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to explore the global and future research trends in acupuncture interventions for stroke between 2000 and 2022 using bibliometric analysis. Method A bibliometric analysis of literature from 2000 to 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection was conducted in this study. The analysis utilized CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica software to identify the major contributors to publications, including authors, countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords. Results The bibliometric analysis yielded a total of 860 publications. There was a gradual increase in the number of publications over the study period. China published the most articles. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the journal with the greatest number of publications. The most frequently used keywords were “acupuncture,” “stroke,” and “electroacupuncture.” Conclusion These analysis uncovers the research trends in acupuncture for stroke spanning 2000 to 2022 and points to prospective research frontiers. This study provides a deeper and more thorough understanding of the connotations of acupuncture for stroke and guidance and support for future research in this field.
Acupuncture for post-stroke depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Abstract Background Acupuncture for post-stroke depression (PSD) has been evolving, but uncertainty remains. To assess the existing evidence from randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of acupuncture for PSD, we sought to draw conclusions by synthesizing RCTs. Methods An exhaustive literature search was conducted in seven electronic databases from their inception dates to April 19, 2020, to identify systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) on this topic. The primary RCTs included in the SRs/MAs were identified. We also conducted a supplementary search for RCTs published from January 1, 2015, to May 12, 2020. Two reviewers extracted data separately and pooled data using RevMan 5.3 software. The quality of evidence was critically appraised with the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Results A total of 17 RCTs involving 1402 patients were included. Meta-analysis showed that participants who received a combination of acupuncture and conventional treatments exhibited significantly lower scores on the HAM-D 17 , HAM-D 24 and HAM-D (MD, − 5.08 [95% CI, − 6.48 to − 3.67], I 2 = 0%), (MD, − 9.72 [95% CI, − 14.54 to − 4.91], I 2 = 65%) and (MD, − 2.72 [95% CI, − 3.61 to − 1.82], respectively) than those who received conventional treatment. However, there was no significant difference in acupuncture versus antidepressants in terms of the 17-item, 24-item and HAM-D scales (MD, − 0.43 [95% CI, − 1.61 to 0.75], I 2 = 51%), (MD, − 3.09 [95% CI, − 10.81 to 4.63], I 2 = 90%) and (MD, − 1.55 [95% CI, − 4.36 to 1.26], I 2 = 95%, respectively). For adverse events, acupuncture was associated with fewer adverse events than antidepressants (RR, 0.16 [95% CI, 0.07 to 0.39], I 2 = 35%), but there was no significant difference in the occurrence of adverse events between the combination of acupuncture and conventional treatments versus conventional treatments (RR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.21 to 1.83], I 2 = 38%). The quality of evidence was low to very low due to the substantial heterogeneity among the included studies. Conclusions The current review indicates that acupuncture has greater effect on PSD and better safety profile than antidepressants, but high-quality evidence evaluating acupuncture for PSD is still needed.

Abstract:Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common psychiatric complication of mental disorders after stroke. Acupuncture for PSD is effective and has few adverse effects. As a classical complementary and alternative therapy, acupuncture is often used in combination with antidepressants for PSD. However, there is a wide variety of acupuncture therapies, and the efficacy of different acupuncture varies. In this study, a network meta-analysis (NMA) was used to assess the clinical efficacy of different acupuncture combined with antidepressants for the treatment of PSD. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, The Cochrane Library, EMbase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, VIP, and Wan-Fang databases for published randomized controlled trials of acupuncture combined with antidepressants for the treatment of PSD was conducted. The time frame for the literature search was from the date of database creation to April 30, 2022. The Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2.0) was used to evaluate the bias risk of the included studies. Data analysis was performed by STATA 14.0 software. Results: A total of 38 literatures with 2,898 patients involving nine acupuncture therapies were included. NMA results were as follows: moxibustion plus antidepressants had the best efficacy in terms of improving total effective rate. Conventional acupuncture plus antidepressants was the most effective in improving HAMD scores. In terms of improving SDS scores, acupressure plus antidepressants was the most effective. In terms of improving NIHSS scores, moxibustion plus antidepressants showed the best results. Conclusion: A comparison of the efficacy indicators of the nine different acupuncture therapies combined showed that moxibustion plus antidepressants, conventional acupuncture plus antidepressants and acupressure plus antidepressants were superior in the treatment of PSD. Based on the shortcomings of the existing studies, this conclusion needs to be validated by additional high-quality randomized controlled trials.

Materials and Methods: Articles on acupuncture for stroke were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from the inception of the database up until 2023. CiteSpace software was performed to conduct the collaborative analysis of networks of countries, institutions, authors and cited authors, journals and cited journals, cited references, keywords clustering and burstiness analysis. Results: A total of 1141 articles were retrieved. China was the most productive country (851) and had the greatest centrality (0.43). Beijing Univ Chinese Med (86) contributed to the most publications. Chen LD (31) and Tao J (31) were the most prolific authors, of which all from Fujian Univ Tradit Chinese Med. Wu P (124) from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Canada, was the most cited author. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (89) was the most productive journal, while Stroke (744) was first cited journals. Stimulation, recovery, ischemic stroke, electroacupuncture, rehabilitation were the most high-frequency keywords. Future research in this area will pay more attention to the evaluation of the effectiveness of acupuncture therapeutics in treating stroke, conducting the clinical research on cognitive ability, quality of life and partial function of stroke patients, and basic research related to mechanisms. Conclusion: The publications on acupuncture in stroke have shown major development, but the international cooperation for academic exchange among researchers and institutions remained to be strengthened to promote interdisciplinary and academic innovation. Abstract:Background: Acupuncture is a widely used clinical treatment method, and studies have confirmed its therapeutic effects on stroke patients. It can also reduce the burden on patients and society. Acupuncture treatment is a complementary and preventive treatment for stroke. However, there has yet to be a visual bibliometric analysis of the field of acupuncture for stroke rat models. This study explores future trends, research hotspots, and frontiers in acupuncture for stroke rat models over the past 20 years through investigation and visualization. Methods: We collected literature data on acupuncture treatment of stroke in rats from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2023. Import into CiteSpace (version 6.2.R4) and RStudio for analysis by author, country/region, affiliation, annual publication, keywords, and journal visualization. Results: A total of 379 articles were retrieved, including articles from 16 countries, 258 research institutions, and 123 academic journals. The countries and institutions with the most publications were the People's Republic of China (338) and the Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (43). Tao, Jing had the highest number of co-citations (144). The keywords and co-citation clustering show the main research directions in the field, including "artery occlusion," "neural regeneration," "stimulation," "rapid tolerance," "receptor," "signaling pathway," "apoptosis," "oxidative stress," "inflammatory response," "endogenous neurogenesis," "tolerance of local cerebral ischemic tissues," "proliferation of reactive astrocytes" and "neuroprotective effect." The intervention combines classical acupuncture treatment and modern technology (electricity) with electroacupuncture as a new intervention modality. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the increasing research on acupuncture for treating stroke in rat models. The country/region with the most publications is the People's Republic of China. However, international cooperation still needs to be improved, and future researchers must strengthen international cooperation. In addition, in future studies, researchers should improve the overall quality of research results in this area and enhance research protocols.

Abstract:The risk of stroke has been increasing worldwide. Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability globally, imposing a significant economic burden. [ 1–3 ] Stroke not only affects patients' motor and cognitive functions but also has a strong association with the development of depression and even suicidal behavior. [ 4–7 ] Stroke survivors are often left with complications, such as limb motor impairment, cognitive impairment, contractures, dysphagia, and urinary incontinence, which may require long-term rehabilitation, resulting in a reduced quality of life for the patients and a burden on society. [ 8 ] Stroke has been recognized as a public health issue and has received extensive concern from medical practitioners.

Efficacy and Safety of Electroacupuncture for Post Stroke Depression: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background Poststroke depression is closely related to increased mortality in stroke patients. Compared with antidepressants, electroacupuncture (EA) treatment for poststroke depression (PSD) has relatively more stable effectiveness and can reduce side effects. This trial is designed to provide solid evidence for the efficacy and safety of EA treatment for patients with PSD. Methods/design This ongoing study is a single-blind, single-center, parallel group, randomized controlled trial. Sixty-two participants will be recruited from Shanghai Shuguang Hospital and randomized into either the EA group or the sham EA group. Baihui, Sishencong, Ganshu, Sanyinjiao, and Taichong are selected as the treatment acupoints in both groups. The EA group will receive the traditional EA treatment with de-qi sensation, and the sham EA group will receive sham EA treatment without needle penetration and electrostimulation. Participants will receive treatment 3 times per week for a total of 12 sessions over 4 weeks. The primary outcome is Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression score, and the secondary outcomes are scores on the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living, and Depression Scale of traditional Chinese medicine. All of the outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, 2 weeks after EA treatment onset, 4 weeks after treatment onset, and at 8-week follow-up. Safety assessments will be done at each visit. Discussion The results of this trial will demonstrate the efficacy and safety of EA treatment for PSD with credible and important clinical evidence, thus supporting EA treatment as an ideal choice for PSD treatment. Abstract:Introduction Acupuncture is widely used on the rehabilitation of stroke survivors, including hemiplegia, constipation, emotional disorders and so on. Although the effectiveness of manual acupuncture therapy on post-stroke depression (PSD) has been confirmed by multiple randomised controlled trials, there were few meta-analyses focused on the connection between different techniques, durations or other detailed operations of manual acupuncture and their effectiveness of improving the depression severity and quality of life for patients with PSD. Methods and analysis A systematic search will be performed on English databases (PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Medline and Embase), Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Data, VIP and Chinese biomedical databases) and Japanese databases (Japan Science and Technology Agency and CiNii). The retrieval time limit will be from the establishment of the database to November 2020. Two researchers will independently screen the literature works, extract data and evaluate the quality of the included studies. Meta-analysis will be conducted by using STATA V.14.0 and Review Manager V.5.3. Ethics and dissemination The results of this meta-analysis will be disseminated through publication in peer-reviewed journals or conference presentations. Abstract:Objective: The most important and common psychiatric disorders after stroke include post-stroke depression, which can lead to a variety of negative health outcomes. This study was calculated to estimate the security and effectiveness of acupuncture rehabilitation in curative effects for post-stroke depression patients. Methods: As of July 2022, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched through electronic databases. Eligibility criteria RCTs evaluate RCTs of acupuncture rehabilitation on treatment events in depressed patients after stroke, compared to a control group. Results: Eight studies were included (n = 16,422). When combined with antidepressant/sham acupuncture efficacy, acupuncture intervention observably reduced HAMD scores (MD= -0.55,95% CI= -1.57 to -0.48, P=0.30, I2= 0%). Meanwhile, acupuncture rehabilitation also reduced BI scores (MD= 1.87,95%CI= -3.77-7.51, P=0.51, I2= 0%) and CGI-S score (MD=0.43,95% CI = 0.06-0.77, P =0.01, I2 = 0%) compared with antidepressants / sham acupuncture. Second, the occurrence rate of combined negative events was dramatically lesser in the acupuncture groups, as indicated by the SERS scores (MD= -4.85,95% CI= 5.67 to -4.04, P <0.00001, I2 = 0%) of the acupuncture groups and the antidepressant/sham acupuncture groups. Furthermore, the overall clinical outcome was observably better in the acupuncture groups (MD=1.58,95% CI =0.813.09, P =0.18, I2 = 0%). Conclusion: Acupuncture rehabilitation intervention for post-stroke depression is safer and more effective than antidepressant/sham acupuncture.

Abstract:Background Post-stroke depression is a common complication of stroke, with a high incidence rate and low recognition rate. Many patients do not receive effective intervention at the onset, which affects subsequent treatment outcomes. Post-stroke depression not only impacts the patient’s mental well-being but also increases the risk of stroke recurrence and poor prognosis. Therefore, it has become a significant public health concern. Acupuncture has gained significant popularity in the treatment of post-stroke depression. However, there are inconsistent clinical research results regarding its efficacy and safety. This systematic review aims to gather and critically assess all available evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of post-stroke depression in patients. Methods We will conduct thorough searches for relevant studies in multiple electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database, Wan-fang Data and China Biomedical Database). Our search scope will encompass studies published from the inception of each database until September 2023. To evaluate the potential bias in all the included studies, we will adhere to the guidelines offered in the Cochrane Handbook. The total effective rate will be the primary outcome. To conduct a systematic review, we will employ RevMan 5.4 software. Results This study will obtain efficacy and safety of acupuncture for the treatment of post-stroke depression. Conclusions The conclusions of this study will provide evidence-based perspectives that can guide clinical decision-making regarding the practicality and recommended timing of using acupuncture to treat post-stroke depression. Furthermore, this study will help advance the clinical application of acupuncture treatment for post-stroke depression and enhance its efficacy while ensuring patient safety.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture combined with antidepressants in the treatment of post-stroke depression (PSD). Methods: The following electronic databases were systematically searched: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chongqing VIP database. The primary outcome was the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score. Two independent investigators screened for eligible clinical trials. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the methodological quality, and RevMan 5.3 was applied for meta-analysis. Results: Thirteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 904 participants were included in the study. The results of this meta-analysis showed that, compared with antidepressants alone, acupuncture combined with antidepressants led to a significant decrease in the HAMD score (mean difference (MD): −3.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): −4.25 to −2.95, P < 0.001), had a better effective rate (risk ratio (RR): 1.33, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.49, P < 0.001) and lower National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores (MD: −2.39, 95% CI: −3.37 to −1.41, P < 0.001), and led to a significant increase in the Barthel index scores (MD: 8.10, 95% CI: 5.25 to 10.94; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Acupuncture combined with antidepressants showed a more favourable effect on the treatment of PSD than antidepressants alone. However, given the limited methodological quality, more high-quality RCTs conducted based on the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) and Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) guidelines are necessary.

Acupuncture has attracted attention as a treatment method without adverse reactions of patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible mechanism of action of acupuncture in PSD. Patients and Methods: Download depression and stroke datasets from public databases. Bioinformatics methods were used to analyze the key gene targets related to stroke and depression. Functional enrichment analysis assesses important pathways. Further screen PSD-related biological pathways and genes. After the experimental model was established, the expression differences of key genes and related pathways were compared between the model group and the control group through acupuncture treatment and qPCR verification. Results: Depression and stroke-related genes were obtained by bioinformatics methods, and then important biological processes and biological pathways related to depression and stroke were analyzed by GO and KEGG. And further screen out the disease targets closely related to PSD. In the follow-up animal experiments, we confirmed that acupuncture can intervene on these key pathways and targets, and then play a role in the targeted therapy of diseases. Conclusion: The results of this study show that five genes ("NRBP1", "SIRT1", "BDNF", "MAPK3", "CREB1".) and key biological pathways such as NFkB, PI3K/AKT activation, and MAPK are the keys to the occurrence and development of PSD biomarkers, which can also be therapeutically intervened by acupuncture. It is one of the most common secondary complications of stroke, which has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients and increases the morbidity and mortality of stroke. 1 Studies have shown that stroke can increase the risk of depression. Thirty-one percent of stroke patients develop depression within 5 years of stroke. Post-stroke depression has become a serious social public health problem. 2 Therefore, exploring the pathogenesis and treatment of PSD is an urgent problem. Acupuncture, as an inexpensive and safe treatment method, has been widely used for thousands of years to improve certain neurological disorders such as stroke and its sequelae. In addition, multiple clinical studies and systematic reviews suggest that acupuncture, 3,4 as a promising intervention, can improve motor and language functions and improve activities of daily living. And there are many studies showing that acupuncture also has the ability to help reorganization, 5 which is helpful for patient recovery. With the growing interest in acupuncture therapy, a lot of research has been done on acupuncture therapy after it was introduced into the scientific community. Acupuncture may become an effective adjunctive therapy or an acceptable alternative therapy for the treatment of functional disorders including post-stroke depression. 6 Related studies have examined 13 cohort studies involving 3536 participants and found that compared with non-PSD patients, PSD patients had significantly higher C-reactive protein levels on admission, proving that C-reactive protein levels were elevated in the acute phase of stroke. Abstract:Objective: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common complication of stroke. Acupuncture as one of the traditional therapies in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), can change the excitability of cerebral cortical nerve cells, and promote the recovery of neurological and swallowing functions. Several clinical primary studies (including RCTs, cohort studies, etc.) and systematic reviews have demonstrated its efficacy and safety in patients with PSD. The positive effects of acupuncture on PSD are also mentioned in international clinical and treatment guidelines, while there is no synthesis of this evidence. This scoping review aims to summarize the evidence from clinical primary studies, reviews, systematic reviews, and guidelines on acupuncture for the treatment of PSD and explore the breadth of this evidence, provide an overview of the range and characteristics of existing evidence, research gaps, and future research priorities in treating PSD with acupuncture. Method: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, Wan Fang Data, and VIP databases were searched from inception until June 12, 2024. The relevant data were presented through bubble diagrams, line graphs, and structured tables along with descriptive statistics and analysis. This scoping review was conducted based on the PRISMA-ScR Checklist. Results: A total of 1,130 studies were included. Most of the studies were conducted in China, with the number increasing over time. The studies included 254 reviews, 815 clinical studies (678 RCTs,107 nRCTs, 12 case reports, 14 cohort studies, and four case series), 51 systematic reviews, and 10 guidelines. Acupuncture interventions included manual acupuncture (MA), electroacupuncture (EA), and MA/EA combined with acupuncture-related methods (such as scalp acupuncture, auricular acupuncture, warm acupuncture, etc.). The most frequently used acupoint was RN23. Acupuncture is often applied in combination with other treatments, such as herbal medicine, Western medicine, rehabilitation training, swallowing training, or catheter balloon dilatation. Effective rates and WTS were the most frequently used outcomes. Most studies reported significant efficacy and only a few studies explicitly reported adverse events. Acupuncture received positive recommendations in nine guidelines for the treatment of PSD. Conclusion: As a convenient and safe traditional Chinese medicine therapy with its characteristics, acupuncture can improve different stages and types of dysphagia without causing serious adverse reactions. In the future, more standardized international cooperative clinical research is needed to identify the influence of different acupuncture intervention times on the curative effect and dose-effect relationship of acupuncture; standardize the clinical acupoint selection scheme of acupuncture; develop a COS with TCM characteristics to improve the quality of outcome reporting, This will enable different research data to be summarized and compared, reduce resource waste, and provide more high-quality evidence.

Abstract:Background: Acupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the world. Despite we have an in-depth understanding of acupuncture in this field over the past years, there is no available literature on bibliometric analysis on the development of acupuncture on PD. This study was designed to explore the global trend in the research of acupuncture on PD in the recent 20 years by the software CiteSpace (5.8.R3) and VOSviewer (1.6.14). Methods: Publications regarding acupuncture therapy for PD from 2000 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to analyze the number of publications, the contribution of countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. Results: A total of 217 studies were extracted from the database. The outputs of the publications in this field showed an upward trend during the past two decades. The country and institutions with the most publications in this field are China, South Korea, and the USA. They were the main contributors to the research. Kyung Hee University and Capital Medical University were the two most productive organizations. Hi-Joon Park had made the greatest contributions to the field. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most popular journals in this field. "Electroacupuncture" and "Bee venom acupuncture" were emerging research hotspots. Conclusion: The research on acupuncture on PD is potential. Authors from different countries/regions and organizations need to remove the language and academic barriers to enhance global cooperation and communications. Scholars in this field need to publish their research findings in high-quality journals to gain more attention worldwide. This study indicated that the mechanism leading to the non-motor symptoms of PD, the establishment of appropriate models that fully reflects the non-motor features of human PD, and the efficacy and safety of promising therapies for patients with PD will remain research frontiers in the future.

Abstract:Objectives: Acupuncture therapy has been used for cognitive impairment-related diseases, however, there are still few studies on the overall trend of acupuncture therapy on cognitive impairment based on bibliometric analysis. The purpose of this study was to explore the research trend of the impact of acupuncture on cognitive impairment in the past 15 years, analyze the research trends and hotspots, and provide new ideas and theoretical basis for future research directions. Methods: From the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), the relevant literature on the treatment of cognitive impairment with acupuncture from 2007 to 2022 was retrieved. Then, based on the CiteSpace and VOSviewer software of the Java platform, the cooperation between countries and institutions in this field, the co-citation of journals and documents, and the cooperation between authors and authors, etc. were analyzed. In addition, the co-occurrence and burst analysis of keywords are also carried out, and a visual knowledge map is drawn. Results: As of August 08, 2022, a total of 394 records related to the treatment of cognitive impairment with acupuncture were identified. The analysis results show: The number and rate of annual publications have steadily increased, with some fluctuations from year to year. The countries that contribute the most to this field are China and the USA. Among them, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Capital Medical University are tied for first place in terms of the number of published papers. Tao Jing is the most prolific author and the number one cited author. Conclusions: The number of publications on acupuncture for cognitive impairment is expected to increase rapidly in future research, suggesting a bright future for the field. Future research hotspots will focus on pain, injury, protocol, diagnosis, guidelines, etc. It is also necessary to strengthen cross-regional and cross-country cooperation among various academic groups.

Abstract:Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common complication after stroke. PSD is associated with emotional disorders and psychological dependence, which are potential risk factors for stroke recurrence and suicidality. This study aimed to perform an umbrella review of therapies for PSD through a comprehensive literature search. A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Web of Science by two independent authors. We examined the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Activities of daily living (ADL), Neurologic function as efficacy endpoints, and the incidence of adverse events as safety profiles. Seventeen eligible studies, including 267 clinical trials were included in this study. The results showed that High-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (HfrTMS), Acupuncture/EA+conventional treatment, Escitalopram, Modified Sini San, Moxibustion, Xiaoyao Formula, Paroxetine, Chinese herbal medicine, Exercise, Citalopram, and Cognitive behavioral therapy are beneficial for improving the depression symptoms of patients with PSD. HfrTMS and Sertraline may have an impact on slowing the scores of activities of daily living or neurologic function. In addition, Acupuncture/EA+conventional, Escitalopram, Citalopram, Sertraline, and Fluoxetine showed no serious adverse events in PSD patients. Our study demonstrated that 11 treatment methods can effectively improve the condition of PSD patients.
