Abstract:The Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment (PHaSE) seeks a complete understanding of the entropically driven disorder-order transition in hard sphere colloidal dispersions. The light scattering instrument designed for flight collects Bragg and low angle light scattering in the forward direction via a CCD camera and performs conventional static and dynamic light scattering at 10-160 deg. through fiber optic cables. Here we report on the kinetics of nucleation and growth extracted from time-resolved Bragg images and measurements of the elastic modulus of crystalline phases obtained by monitoring resonant responses to sinusoidal forcing through dynamic light scattering. Preliminary analysis of the former indicates a significant difference from measurements on the ground, while the latter confirms nicely laboratory experiments with the same instrument and predictions from computer simulations.
Phase Separation and Crystallization of Binary Nanoparticles Induced by Polymer Brushes

Abstract:The aggregation behaviors and phase separation of binary nanoparticles immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformations of the binary nanoparticle-brush mixtures are very sensitive to the size ratio q = sigma(l)/sigma(s) where sigma(l) and sigma(s) are the diameters for large and small nanoparticles, respectively, and the attractive interactions epsilon(M) between the nanoparticles and polymer brushes. The phase separation of the binary nanoparticles is observed at a relatively strong attractive interaction under the effects of inter-nanoparticle depletion attractions provided by polymer brushes. Furthermore, the crystallization of small nanoparticles occurs at a strong interaction and a hexagonal close-packed-like (hcp-like) ordered structure is formed. The present results may promise a new approach for controlling the self-assembling behavior of nanoparticles and constructing a better macroscopic performance of the material.
Tunable Crystalline Order and Growth Kinetics in 2D Binary Colloidal Self-assembly Driven by Depletion Interactions

Abstract:We investigate two-dimensional crystal assemblies formed by a binary mixture of colloidal particles with a size ratio of 0.88 and driven by short-ranged depletion interactions. Our experiments show that the orientational order of the assembly decreases with an increasing fraction of impurity particles, reaching up to 18% reduction in a 1:1 binary mixture compared to a monodisperse suspension. We observe slower growth rate and arrested dynamics in the binary mixture, whereas the monodisperse sample follows a two-step nucleation and growth mechanism. We performed molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the minimum energy states for different size ratios and number ratios of the binary mixture. The simulation results predict a compromised translational order but sustained orientational order in a binary mixture with a size ratio as high as 0.88. From the combined experimental and numerical results, we conclude that the disordered assemblies found in a binary mixture originate from the frustration in assembly kinetics rather than topological frustration when there is a marginal mismatch between the two particle sizes.

Abstract:The self-assembly of binary nanoparticle superlattices from colloidal mixtures is a promising method for the fabrication of complex colloidal co-crystal structures. However, binary mixtures often form amorphous or metastable phases instead of the thermodynamically stable phase. Here we show that in binary mixtures of differently sized spherical particles, an excess of the smaller component can promote -- and, in some cases, may be necessary for -- the self-assembly of a binary co-crystal. Using computer simulations, we identify two mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon. First, excess small particles act like plasticizers and enable systems to reach a greater supersaturation before kinetic arrest occurs. Second, they can disfavor competing structures that may interfere with the growth of the target structure. We find the phase behavior of simulated mixtures of hard spheres closely matches published experimental results. Abstract:Self-assembly of granular particles is of great interest in both applied and basic research. It is commonly observed that when randomly packed into a container, granular particles form disordered structures like glass. As the particles are athermal, the self-assembly of such packings can normally be directed with energy input via vibration or shear. However, here we show that in particular containers, mono-sized spheres and cubes can self-assemble into perfect crystals when randomly dropped in. This is because the favourable microstates for new particles are jammed in the ordered structure by the existing particles and the boundary synergistically. Such a self-assembly method has not been reported in the literature. It indicates that disordered packing structure may result from the conflict between the internal structure and the structure shaped by the boundary. Therefore, to bridge such inconsistency could be a general principle for directing self-assembly for different kinds of particles in emerging areas.

Abstract:At low temperatures, colloidal particles with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions can form various periodic microphases in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bulk.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this paper, we investigate the self-assembly behaviour of colloids with competing interactions under spherical confinement by conducting molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the cluster, mixture, cylindrical, perforated lamellar and lamellar structures can be obtained, but the details of the ordered structures are different from those in bulk systems. Interestingly, the system tends to form more perforated structures when confined in smaller spheres. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is the relationship between the energy of the ordered structures and the bending of the confinement wall, which is different from the mechanism in copolymer systems.

Abstract:The synthesis of binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) enables the targeted integration of orthogonal physical properties, like photoluminescence and magnetism, into a single superstructure, unlocking a vast design space for multifunctional materials. Yet, the formation mechanism of BNSLs remains poorly understood, restricting the use of simulation to predict the structure and properties of the superlattices. Here, we use a combination of in situ scattering and molecular simulation to elucidate the self-assembly of two common BNSLs through emulsion templating. Our self-assembly experiments reveal that no intermediate structures precede the formation of the final binary phases, indicating that their formation proceeds through classical nucleation. Using simulations, we find that, despite the formation of AlB2 and NaZn13 typically being attributed to entropy, their self-assembly is most consistent with the nanocrystals possessing short-range interparticle attraction, which we find can dramatically accelerate nucleation kinetics in BNSLs. We also find homogenous, classical nucleation in simulation, corroborating our experiments. These results establish a robust correspondence between experiment and theory, paving the way towards a priori prediction of BNSLs.

Abstract:We show that two-dimensional bidisperse assemblies of colloids with strictly repulsive interactions exhibit stripe, cluster, and partially crystallized states when driven over a quenched random substrate. The nonequilibrium states on a substrate are significantly more ordered than equilibrium states both with and without substrates. A minimum substrate strength is necessary to induce the nonequilibrium pattern formation. Our results suggest that a combination of driving and quenched disorder offers a new approach to controlling pattern formation in colloid mixtures.

Abstract:A thermodynamically driven self-organization of microclusters of semiconductor nanocrystals with a narrow size distribution into periodic two-dimensional (2D) arrays is an attractive low-cost technique for the fabrication of 2D photonic crystals. We have found that CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots or quantum rods, transferred in aqueous phase after capping with the bifunctional surface-active agent DL-cysteine, form on a poly-L-lysine coated surface homogeneously sized micro-particles, droplet-like spheroid clusters and hexagon-like colloidal crystals self-organized into millimetre-sized 2D hexagonal assemblies. The presence of an organic molecular layer around the micro-particles prevents immediate contact between them, forming an interstitial space which may be varied in thickness by changing the origin of the molecular layer capping nanocrystals. Due to the high refractive index of CdSe and the low refractive index of the interstitial spaces, these structures are expected to have deep gaps in their photonic band, forming hierarchically ordered 2D arrays of potentially photonic materials.
Disordering two-dimensional magnet-particle configurations using bidispersity

Abstract:In various types of many-particle systems, bidispersity is frequently used to avoid spontaneous ordering in particle configuration. In this study, the relation between bidispersity and disorder degree of particle configuration is investigated. By using magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, magnet particles are dispersed in a two-dimensional cell without physical contact between them. In this magnetic system, bidispersity is introduced by mixing large and small magnets. Then, the particle system is compressed to produce a uniform particle configuration. The compressed particle configuration is analyzed by using Voronoi tessellation for evaluating the disorder degree which strongly depends on bidispersity. Specifically, standard deviation and skewness of the Voronoi cell area distribution are measured. As a result, we find that the peak of standard deviation is observed when the numbers of large and small particles are almost identical. Although the skewness shows non-monotonic behavior, zero skewness state (symmetric distribution) can be achieved when the numbers of large and small particles are identical. In this ideally random (disordered) state, the ratio between pentagonal, hexagonal, and heptagonal Voronoi cells become roughly identical, while hexagons are dominant in monodisperse (ordered) condition. The relation between Voronoi cell analysis and the global bond orientational order parameter is also discussed.

Abstract:The design and assembly of monodisperse colloidal particles not only advances the development of functional materials, but also provides colloidal model systems for understanding phase behaviors of molecules. This communication describes the gram-scale synthesis of highly uniform colloidal cuboids with tunable dimension and shape biaxiality and their molecular mesogen-like assembly into various mesophasic structures in pristine purity. The synthesis relies on the nanoemulsion-guided generation of ammonium sulfate crystals that template the subsequent silica coating. The shape of the cuboidal particles can be tuned from square platelike, to biaxial boardlike, and to rodlike by independently controlling the length, width and thickness of the particles. We demonstrated the assembly of the cuboidal colloids into highly pure mesoscopic liquid crystal phases, including smectic A, biaxial smectic A, crystal B, discotic, and columnar phases, as well as established a correlation between mesophasic formation and colloidal biaxiality in experiments.
Designing patchy interactions to self-assemble arbitrary structures

Abstract:One of the fundamental goals of nanotechnology is to exploit selective and directional interactions between molecules to design particles that self-assemble into desired structures, from capsids, to nano-clusters, to fully formed crystals with target properties (e.g. optical, mechanical, etc.). Here we provide a general framework which transforms the inverse problem of self-assembly of colloidal crystals into a Boolean satisfiability problem for which solutions can be found numerically. Given a reference structure and the desired number of components, our approach produces designs for which the target structure is an energy minimum, and also allows to exclude solutions that correspond to competing structures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by designing model particles that spontaneously nucleate milestone structures such as the cubic diamond, the pyrochlore and the clathrate lattices.

Designing athermal disordered solids with automatic differentiation

Abstract:The ability to control forces between sub-micron-scale building blocks offers considerable potential for designing new materials through self-assembly. A typical paradigm is to first identify a particular (crystal) structure that has some desired property, and then design building-block interactions so that this structure assembles spontaneously. While significant theoretical and experimental progress has been made in assembling complicated structures in a variety of systems, this two-step paradigm fundamentally fails for structurally disordered solids, which lack a well-defined structure to use as a target. Here we show that disordered solids can still be treated from an inverse self-assembly perspective by targeting material properties directly. Using the Poisson's ratio, $\nu$, as a primary example, we show how differentiable programming connects experimentally relevant interaction parameters with emergent behavior, allowing us to iteratively "train" the system until we find the set of interactions that leads to the Poisson's ratio we desire. Beyond the Poisson's ratio, we also tune the pressure and a measure of local 8-fold structural order, as well as multiple properties simultaneously, demonstrating the potential for nontrivial design in disordered solids. This approach is highly robust, transferable, and scalable, can handle a wide variety of model systems, properties of interest, and preparation dynamics, and can optimize over 100s or even 1000s of parameters. This result connects the fields of disordered solids and inverse self-assembly, indicating that many of the tools and ideas that have been developed to understand the assembly of crystals can also be used to control the properties of disordered solids.

Entropy-Driven Crystallization of Hard Colloidal Mixtures of Polymers and Monomers

Abstract:The most trivial example of self-assembly is the entropy-driven crystallization of hard spheres. Past works have established the similarities and differences in the phase behavior of monomers and chains made of hard spheres. Inspired by the difference in the melting points of the pure components, we study, through Monte Carlo simulations, the phase behavior of athermal mixtures composed of fully flexible polymers and individual monomers of uniform size. We analyze how the relative number fraction and the packing density affect crystallization and the established ordered morphologies. As a first result, a more precise determination of the melting point for freely jointed chains of tangent hard spheres is extracted. A synergetic effect is observed in the crystallization leading to synchronous crystallization of the two species. Structural analysis of the resulting ordered morphologies shows perfect mixing and thus no phase separation. Due to the constraints imposed by chain connectivity, the local environment of the individual spheres, as quantified by the Voronoi polyhedron, is systematically more spherical and more symmetric compared to that of spheres belonging to chains. In turn, the local environment of the ordered phase is more symmetric and more spherical compared to that of the initial random packing, demonstrating the entropic origins of the phase transition. In general, increasing the polymer content reduces the degree of crystallinity and increases the melting point to higher volume fractions. According to the present findings, relative concentration is another determining factor in controlling the phase behavior of hard colloidal mixtures based on polymers.
The emergence of bulk structure in clusters via isotropic multi-well pair potentials

Abstract:The mechanical, optical, and chemical properties of a wide variety of soft materials are enabled and constrained by their bulk structure. How this structure emerges at small system sizes during self-assembly has been the subject of decades of research, with the aim of designing and controlling material functionality. Despite these efforts, it is still not fundamentally understood how nontrivial interparticle interactions in a finite $N$-body system influence resultant structure, and how that structure depends on $N$. In this study, we investigate the emergence of non-close packings using multi-well isotropic pair potentials to simulate finite cluster formation of four distinct two-dimensional crystal structures. These pair potentials encode multiple preferred length scales into the system, allowing us to understand how anisotropic structural motifs -- as opposed to close-packing -- emerge as cluster size $N$ increases. We find a tendency toward close-packing at small system sizes irrespective of the bulk structure; however, the system size at which bulk structure emerges is influenced by the coordination number of the bulk and the shape of the pair potential. Anisotropic structure emerges through the formation of bonds at a secondary bonding length at larger system sizes, and it is also dependent upon the shape of the pair potential. Our findings demonstrate that tuning particle-particle interactions can enable the engineering of nano- or mesoscale soft matter clusters, in applications as diverse as drug delivery and hierarchical materials design.

Effects of quenched disorder on the kinetics and pathways of phase transition in a soft colloidal system

Abstract:Although impurities are unavoidable in real-world and experimental systems, most numerical studies on nucleation focus on pure (impurity-free) systems. As a result, the role of impurities in phase transitions remains poorly understood, especially for systems with complex free energy landscapes featuring one or more metastable intermediate phases. In this study, we employed Monte-Carlo simulations to investigate the effects of static impurities (quenched disorder) of varying length scales and surface morphologies on the nucleation mechanism and kinetics in the Gaussian Core Model (GCM) system, a model for soft colloidal systems. We first explored how the nucleation free energy barrier and critical cluster size are influenced by the fraction of pinned particles ($f_{\rm p}$) and the pinned cluster size ($n_{\rm p}$). Both the nucleation free energy barrier and critical cluster size increase sharply with increasing $f_{\rm p}$ but decrease as $n_{\rm p}$ grows, eventually approaching the homogeneous nucleation limit. On examining the impact of surface morphology on nucleation kinetics, we observed that the nucleation barrier significantly decreases with increasing the spherical pinned cluster (referred to as "seed") size of face-centred cubic (FCC), body-centred cubic (BCC), and simple cubic (SC) structures, with BCC showing the greatest facilitation. Interestingly, seeds with random surface roughness had little effect on nucleation kinetics. Additionally, the polymorphic identity of particles in the final crystalline phase is influenced by both seed surface morphology and system size. This study further provides crucial insights into the intricate relationship between substrate-induced local structural fluctuations and the selection of the polymorphic identity in the final crystalline phase, which is essential for understanding and controlling crystallization processes in experiments.

Abstract:We study a complex mixture with bidispersity in size and polydispersity in energy using computer simulation. The energy polydispersity between the bidisperse particles is introduced by considering random pair-wise interactions. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations are performed to compute potential energy and neighborhood identity ordering (NIO) parameter as a function of temperature for different size-ratios and concentrations of the two species by quenching it from a high-temperature fluid state to a solid state. Our findings demonstrate an enhancement of the neighborhood identity ordering on the addition of particles of different sizes, which also depends on particle concentration. Moreover, a comparatively higher increase in the NIO parameter is achieved by tuning the size-ratio of the particles. We also propose that the NIO parameter is a good marker to differentiate multicomponent systems (below the liquid to solid transition temperature) with different size-ratios and concentrations.

Self-Assembly on a Cylinder: A Model System for Understanding the Constraint of Commensurability

Abstract:A crystal lattice, when confined to the surface of a cylinder, must have a periodic structure that is commensurate with the cylinder circumference. This constraint can frustrate the system, leading to oblique crystal lattices or to structures with a chiral seam known as a "line slip" phase, neither of which are stable for isotropic particles in equilibrium on flat surfaces. In this study, we use molecular dynamics simulations to find the steady-state structure of spherical particles with short-range repulsion and long-range attraction far below the melting temperature. We vary the range of attraction using the Lennard-Jones and Morse potentials and find that a shorter-range attraction favors the line-slip. We develop a simple model based only on geometry and bond energy to predict when the crystal or line-slip phases should appear, and find reasonable agreement with the simulations. The simplicity of this model allows us to understand the influence of the commensurability constraint, an understanding that might be extended into the more general problem of self-assembling particles in strongly confined spaces.

Complex Self-Assembly from Simple Interaction Rules in Model Colloidal Mixtures

Abstract:Building structures with hierarchical order through the self-assembly of smaller blocks is not only a prerogative of nature, but also a strategy to design artificial materials with tailored functions. We explore in simulation the spontaneous assembly of colloidal particles into extended structures, using spheres and size-asymmetric dimers as solute particles, while treating the solvent implicitly. Besides rigid cores for all particles, we assume an effective short-range attraction between spheres and small monomers to promote, through elementary rules, dimer-mediated aggregation of spheres. Starting from a completely disordered configuration, we follow the evolution of the system at low temperature and density, as a function of the relative concentration of the two species. When spheres and large monomers are of same size, we observe the onset of elongated aggregates of spheres, either disconnected or cross-linked, and a crystalline bilayer. As spheres grow bigger, the self-assembling scenario changes, getting richer overall, with the addition of flexible membrane sheets with crystalline order and monolayer vesicles. With this wide assortment of structures, our model can serve as a viable template to achieve a better control of self-assembly in dilute suspensions of microsized particles.

Inverse Design of Crystals and Quasicrystals in a Non-Additive Binary Mixture of Hard Disks

Abstract:The development of new materials typically involves a process of trial and error, guided by insights from past experimental and theoretical findings. The inverse design approach for soft-matter systems has the potential to optimize specific physical parameters such as particle interactions, particle shape, or composition and packing fraction. This optimization aims to facilitate the spontaneous formation of specific target structures through self-assembly. In this study, we expand upon a recently introduced inverse design protocol for monodisperse systems to identify the required conditions and interactions for assembling crystal and quasicrystal phases within a binary mixture of two distinct species. This method utilizes an evolutionary algorithm to identify the optimal state point and interaction parameters, enabling the self-assembly of the desired structure. Additionally, we employ a convolutional neural network (CNN) that classifies different phases based on their diffraction patterns, serving as a fitness function for the desired structure. Using our protocol, we successfully inverse design two-dimensional crystalline structures, including a hexagonal lattice, and a dodecagonal quasicrystal, within a non-additive binary mixture of hard disks. Finally, we introduce a symmetry-based order parameter that leverages the encoded symmetry within the diffraction pattern.
