Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.

Abstract:It is vital to understand the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism at the molecular level for the rational design and synthesis of high activity fuel cell catalysts. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful technique capable of detecting the bond vibrations of surface species in the low wavenumber range, however using it to probe practical nanocatalysts remains extremely challenging. Herein, shell‐isolated nanoparticle‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) was used to investigate ORR processes on the surface of novel bimetallic Pt3Co nanocatlyst satellite structures. Direct spectroscopic evidence of *OOH suggests that ORR undergoes an associative mechanism on Pt3Co in both acidic and basic environments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the weak *O adsorption arises from electronic effect on the Pt3Co surface and accounts for enhanced ORR activity. This work shows SHINERS is a promising technique for the real‐time observation of catalytic processes.

Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Despite recent progress in developing active and durable oxygen reduction catalysts with reduced Pt content, lack of elegant bottom-up synthesis procedures with knowledge over the control of atomic arrangement and morphology of the Pt-alloy catalysts still hinders fuel cell commercialization. To follow a less empirical synthesis path for improved Pt-based catalysts, it is essential to correlate catalytic performance to properties that can be easily controlled and measured experimentally. Herein, using Pt-Co alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with varying atomic composition as an example, we show that the atomic distribution of Pt-based bimetallic NPs under operating conditions is strongly dependent on the initial atomic ratio by employing microscopic and in situ spectroscopic techniques. The PtxCo/C NPs with high Co content possess a Co concentration gradient such that Co is concentrated in the core and gradually depletes in the near-surface region, whereas the PtxCo/C NPs with low Co content possess a relatively uniform distribution of Co with low Co population in the near-surface region. Despite their different atomic structure, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of PtxCo/C and Pt/C NPs is linearly related to the bulk average Pt-Pt bond length (RPt-Pt). The RPt-Pt is further shown to contract linearly with the increase in Co/Pt composition. These linear correlations together demonstrate that (i) the improved ORR activity of PtxCo/C NPs over pure Pt NPs originates predominantly from the compressive strain and (ii) the RPt-Pt is a valid strain descriptor that bridges the activity and atomic composition of Pt-based bimetallic NPs.

Abstract:A considerable amount of platinum (Pt) is required to ensure an adequate rate for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Thus, the implementation of atomic Pt catalysts holds promise for minimizing the contents of Pt. In this contribution, atomic Pt sites with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) co-coordination on carbon matrix (PtNPC) are conceptually predicted and experimentally developed to alter the d -band center of Pt, thereby promoting the intrinsic ORR activity. The PtNPC with a record-low Pt content (~0.026 wt%) consequently shows a benchmark-comparable activity for ORR with an onset of 1.0 V RHE and half-wave potential of 0.85 V RHE . It also features a high stability in 15,000-cycle tests and a superior turnover frequency of 6.80 s -1 at 0.9 V RHE . Damjanovic kinetics analysis reveals a tuned ORR kinetics of PtNPC from mixed 2/4-electron to predominate 4-electron route. It is discovered that coordinated P species significantly shifts d -band center of Pt atoms, accounting for the exceptional performance of PtNPC.

Abstract:PtNi alloy catalysts have excellent catalytic activity and are considered some of the most promising electrocatalysts capable of replacing pure Pt for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). For PtNi alloys, Ni-doping can improve performance by changing the electronic and structural properties of the catalyst surface and its interaction with reaction intermediates. However, to date there is no direct spectral evidence detecting or identifying the effect of Ni on the ORR in PtNi alloy catalysts. Herein, we introduce a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) "borrowing" strategy for investigating ORR processes catalyzed by nanoparticles (NPs). The bond vibration of adsorbed peroxide intermediate species (*OOH) was obtained, and the effect of Ni on the interaction between surface Pt and *OOH was studied by varying the Ni content in the alloy. The frequency of the *OOH spectral band has an obvious red-shift with increasing Ni content. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that Ni-doping can optimize *OOH surface binding on the Pt surface, achieving more efficient electron transfer, thus improving the ORR rate. Abstract:Pt‐based nanomaterials play important roles in the catalytic process toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Rationally regulating the composition and morphology of the catalysts could enhance the catalytic performance effectively. In this work, an effective method is presented to synthesize Pd@ mesoporous PtRu nanorattles (Pd@mPtRu NRs) containing a Pd core and a mesoporous PtRu shell. Owing to the unique structure and PtRu alloy composition, the prepared Pd@mPtRu NRs exhibit an enhanced catalytic performance and durability toward ORR relative to mesoporous PtRu hollow nanoparticles (mPtRu HNs) and commercial Pt/C. The proposed approach may provide a general way to synthesize Pt‐based yolk‐shell structures with different compositions.

Abstract:Pd-based nanoparticles are promising candidates for non-Pt catalysts of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Trends in ORR activity of Pd/Cu-alloy-core@Pd-shell nanoparticles are studied by calculating the oxygen binding energy on the Pd surface with different Cu compositions in the alloy core. Density functional theory calculations show that several properties of the nanoparticle surface, including the average oxygen binding energy, d-band center, and the net charge of Pd, are linearly related to the ratio of Cu in the core, demonstrating the capacity to tune ORR activity. Trends in oxygen binding of other core alloys are also studied and show similar linear trends with core composition, providing a design strategy for new ORR catalysts.

Abstract:We review our recent progress in the development of Pt–Ni bimetallic electrocatalysts with both high sustained activity and sustained stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This was achieved by an atomic understanding and rational control of the core–shell compositional patterns and size-related nanoporosity within the bimetallic nanoparticles formed during chemical and electrochemical pretreatment and electrocatalysis. In particular, we reveal how the size of the nanoparticle directly influences the nanoporosity formation and thereby the near surface composition, catalytic activity and stability. Our atomic insights provide a clearer picture on how bimetallic nanoparticles should be tailored for optimal ORR performance.

Abstract:Increasing the platinum utilization efficiency is the key to the advancement and broad dissemination of proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Central to the task is the creation of highly active and durable Pt-based catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which demands a comprehensive understanding of the ORR processes on these catalysts under reaction conditions. Past efforts have accumulated a vast wealth of knowledge of the ORR on extended Pt and Pt-alloy model surfaces. While the knowledge has been applied to understanding and designing ORR catalysts, it has also been recognized that these understandings cannot always translate into nanoscale systems. In this Perspective, we will review the progress that the theoretical descriptor has evolved to reconcile the observed differences between extended and nanoscale Pt surfaces, and we highlight the needs in advancing both characterizations and theories in order to understand ORR in the more complex Pt-alloy nanocatalysts. Particularly, understanding the dynamic structure–composition–function relation of Pt-alloy nanocatalysts during ORR demands concerted efforts in precision synthesis, advanced atomistic-scale in situ characterization, and comprehensive computational models.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Shape-controlled Pt-based bimetallic nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt-rich surfaces are appealing electrocatalysts for some key electrochemical reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of the synergistic tuning of topological atom configuration and strengthened electronic effects. However, it is rather challenging to fabricate such particular structures that can remain intact in harsh electrochemical environments, as such Pt-based nanocatalysts are unable to simultaneously achieve both unparalleled activity and robust stability. Here, a facile surface engineering strategy is proposed and employed to atomically tailor the near-surface structure of the Pt1.5Ni octahedra. The engineered Pt-Ni octahedra consist of an ultrathin Pt-rich shell (similar to two atomic layers) and Pt-rich bulk composition. The optimized octahedral catalyst exhibits superior specific and mass activity (7.7 mA/cm(2) Pt and 1.9 A/mg Pt at 0.9 V) for ORR, similar to 20 and similar to 10 times higher than commercial Pt/C, respectively. The ligand and strain effects arising from the near-surface engineering are unraveled to be responsible for the remarkable ORR activity. Moreover, it shows robust stability with just 9.2% decay in mass activity after accelerated degradation tests (ADTs), as its compositional nature prevents surface Pt atoms and interior Ni atoms from diffusion and dissolution, compared with a decrease of 33% for commercial Pt/C. Our atomical engineered surface strategy illustrates a facile and effective design for a class of Pt-based nanocatalysts with excellent activity and stability.

Abstract:Understanding the atomic structure of a catalyst is crucial to exposing the source of its performance characteristics. It is highly unlikely that a catalyst remains the same under reaction conditions when compared to as-synthesized. Hence, the ideal experiment to study the catalyst structure should be performed in situ. Here, we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as an in situ technique to study Pt3Ni nanoframe particles which have been proven to be an excellent electro catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The surface characteristics of the nanoframes were probed through electrochemical hydrogen underpotential deposition and carbon monoxide electrooxidation, which showed that nanoframe surfaces with different structure exhibit varying levels of binding strength to adsorbate molecules. It is well-known that Pt-skin formation on Pt-Ni catalysts will enhance ORR activity by weakening the binding energy between the surface and adsorbates. Ex situ and in situ XAS results reveal that nanoframes which bind adsorbates more strongly have a rougher Pt surface caused by insufficient segregation of Pt to the surface and consequent Ni dissolution. In contrast, nanoframes which exhibit extremely high ORR activity simultaneously demonstrate more significant segregation of Pt over Ni-rich subsurface layers, allowing better formation of the critical Pt-skin. This work demonstrates that the high ORR activity of the Pt3Ni hollow nanoframes depends on successful formation of the Pt-skin surface structure.

Abstract:Forming core-shell and alloy structures offers generally two ways to design efficient Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we combined these two strategies and invented a versatile aqueous route to synthesize octahedral Pd@Pt1.8Ni core-shell nanocrystals. The Pt/Ni atomic ratios in the resultant shells can be varied from 0.6 to 1.8, simply by changing the amounts of Pt and Ni precursors, with the other conditions unchanged. Experimental studies showed that the mass activities of as-prepared catalysts were 5 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C. We believe that the ultrathin PtNi shells enclosed by {111} facets made it possible to reduce the Pt content while retaining the catalytic activity toward ORR. This strategy may be extended to the preparation of other multimetallic nanocrystals with shaped and ultrathin alloy shells, which is conducive to design highly active catalysts.
Revealing the Role of D Orbitals of Transition-Metal-Doped Titanium Oxide on High Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Precise catalysis is critical for the high-quality catalysis industry. However, it remains challenging to fundamentally understand precise catalysis at the atomic orbital level. Herein, we propose a new strategy to unravel the role of specific d orbitals in catalysis. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyzed by atomically dispersed Pt/Co-doped Ti1-xO2 nanosheets (Pt-1/Co-1-Ti1-xO2) is used as a model catalysis. The z-axis d orbitals of Pt/Co-Ti realms dominate the O-2 adsorption, thus triggering ORR. In light of orbital-resolved analysis, Pt-1/Co-1-Ti1-xO2 is experimentally fabricated, and the excellent ORR catalytic performance is further demonstrated. Further analysis reveals that the superior ORR performance of Pt-1-Ti1-xO2 to Co-1-Ti1-xO2 is ascribed to stronger activation of Ti by Pt than Co via the d-d hybridization. Overall, this work provides a useful tool to understand the underlying catalytic mechanisms at the atomic orbital level and opens new opportunities for precise catalyst design. [GRAPHICS] .
Design of Pt-shell Nanoparticles with Alloy Cores for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Abstract:We report that the oxygen binding energy of alloy-core@Pt nanoparticles can be linearly tuned by varying the alloy-core composition. Using this tuning mechanism, we are able to predict optimal compositions for different alloy-core@Pt nanoparticles. Subsequent electrochemical measurements of ORR activities of AuPd@Pt dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs) are in a good agreement with the theoretical prediction that the peak of activity is achieved for a 28% Au/72% Pd alloy core supporting a Pt shell. Importantly, these findings represent an unusual case of first-principles theory leading to nearly perfect agreement with experimental results.
High Activity and Durability of Carbon-Supported Core-Shell PtPx@Pt/C Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Alloying Pt with transition metals can significantly improve the catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in fuel cells is largely limited by poor long-term durability because transition metals can easily leach. In this study, we developed a nonmetallic doping approach and prepared a P-doped Pt catalyst with excellent durability for the ORR. Carbon-supported core-shell nanoparticles with a P-doped Pt core and Pt shell (denoted as PtPx@Pt/C) were synthesized via heat-treatment phosphorization of commercial Pt/C, followed by acid etching. Compositional analysis using electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy clearly demonstrated that Pt was enriched in the near-surface region (approximately 1 nm) of the carbon-supported core-shell nanoparticles. Owning to P doping, the ORR specific activity and mass activity of the PtP1.4@Pt/C catalyst were as high as 0.62 mA cm−2 and 0.31 mA μgPt−1, respectively, at 0.90 V, and they were enhanced by 2.8 and 2.1 times, respectively, in comparison with the Pt/C catalyst. More importantly, PtP1.4@Pt/C exhibited superior stability with negligible mass activity loss (6% after 30000 potential cycles and 25% after 90000 potential cycles), while Pt/C lost 46% mass activity after 30000 potential cycles. The high ORR activity and durability were mainly attributed to the core-shell nanostructure, the electronic structure effect, and the resistance of Pt nanoparticles against aggregation, which originated from the enhanced ability of the PtP1.4@Pt to anchor to the carbon support. This study provides a new approach for constructing nonmetal-doped Pt-based catalysts with excellent activity and durability for the ORR.

Abstract:PtCo alloys as the compelling catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been loaded on the heteroatom-modified carbon carriers in recent years to modulate their electronic structure and influence their interaction with intermediates. However, the actual active sites remain unclear and their interaction with intermediates are still controversial. Herein, PtCo/PC catalysts were synthesized by loading PtCo alloys on P-modified carbon carriers, and their catalytic mechanism was investigated using in situ Raman spectroscopy. The results display that the distorted and disordered PtCo alloy sites and the P-C defect sites are pinpointed and clarified as the double active sites for such catalysts. Among which, PtCo/PC-2 has the most abundant active sites, the optimal hierarchical porous structure, and the strongest Co-P binding, thereby showing ORR activity and stability. Combined with in situ Raman analysis, it exposits that the doped P atom in PtCo/PC-2 possesses a strong electron-donating ability, which indirectly facilitates Pt as an electron reservoir to donate electrons for OOH* on PtCo alloy sites, and directly weakens the adsorption energy of OOH* on P-C defect sites. Furthermore, the dynamic evolution of OOH* discloses double active sites on PtCo/PC-2 synergistically promoting the ORR process along an associative pathway.

Abstract:In comparison to conventional Pt alloys with late transition metals such as nickel and cobalt, Pt-rare earth metal alloys (Pt-RE) such as Pt-Ce, Pt-La, and Pt-Nd could have much-improved stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media. However, this promise has only been demonstrated with polycrystalline electrodes rather than the more industrially relevant form of nanoparticles. A major challenge lies in the synthesis of Pt-RE alloy particles with well-defined shapes, sizes, and crystalline structures. We recently invented a solid-state chemical process for the synthesis of Pt-Re alloy nanoparticles. Here, we report our recent findings on the understanding of synthesis mechanisms and structural changes of Pt-RE alloy particles under operating ORR conditions, which are based on the results obtained from multiple in-situ techniques including in-situ transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and thermal-gravimetric mass spectrometry, etc. We aim to answer two questions through the studies, that is, 1) how do the alloy crystals come into formation during the synthesis? and 2) how do the structures of the alloy particles change during operating ORR conditions?

Abstract:The development of electrocatalysts with reconcilable balance between the cost and performance in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an imperative task for the widespread adoption of fuel cell technology. In this study, we proposed a unique model of diatomic Pt-cluster (Pt-dimer) in the topmost layer of the Co/Pd bimetallic slab (Co@Pd-Pt2) for mimicking the Cocore@Pdshell nanocatalysts (NCs) surface and systematically investigating its local-regional collaboration pathways in ORR by density functional theory (DFT). The results demonstrate that the Pt-dimer produces local differentiation from both ligand and geometric effects on the Co@Pd surface, which forms adsorption energy (Eads) gradients for relocating the ORR-adsorbates. Our calculations for Eads-variations of ORR-species, reaction coordinates, and intraparticle charge injection propose and confirm a novel local synergetic collaboration around the Pt-dimer in the Co@Pd-Pt2 system with the best-performing ORR behavior compared with all reference models. With proper selection of the composition in intraparticle components, the proposed DFT assessments could be adopted for developing economical and high-performance catalysts in various heterogeneous reactions.
High activity and durability of carbon-supported core-shell PtP @Pt/C catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Abstract:Alloying Pt with transition metals can significantly improve the catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in fuel cells is largely limited by poor long-term durability because transition metals can easily leach. In this study, we developed a nonmetallic doping approach and prepared a P-doped Pt catalyst with excellent durability for the ORR. Carbon-supported core-shell nanoparticles with a P-doped Pt core and Pt shell (denoted as PtPx@Pt/C) were synthesized via heat-treatment phosphorization of commercial Pt/C, followed by acid etching. Compositional analysis using electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy clearly demonstrated that Pt was enriched in the near-surface region (approximately 1 nm) of the carbon-supported core-shell nanoparticles. Owning to P doping, the ORR specific activity and mass activity of the PtP1.4@Pt/C catalyst were as high as 0.62 mA cm−2 and 0.31 mA μgPt−1, respectively, at 0.90 V, and they were enhanced by 2.8 and 2.1 times, respectively, in comparison with the Pt/C catalyst. More importantly, PtP1.4@Pt/C exhibited superior stability with negligible mass activity loss (6% after 30000 potential cycles and 25% after 90000 potential cycles), while Pt/C lost 46% mass activity after 30000 potential cycles. The high ORR activity and durability were mainly attributed to the core-shell nanostructure, the electronic structure effect, and the resistance of Pt nanoparticles against aggregation, which originated from the enhanced ability of the PtP1.4@Pt to anchor to the carbon support. This study provides a new approach for constructing nonmetal-doped Pt-based catalysts with excellent activity and durability for the ORR.
