Abstract:This work focuses on the observer design for a first order ODE-transport PDE coupled at the boundary points. A novel anti-collocated observer and an output feedback boundary control law are designed for an under-actuated coupled system using the backstepping method. The homo-directional hyperbolic type PDE is considered with in-domain coupling between the states. The stabilization of the coupled systems are discussed by Lyapunov theory and linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is implemented to design the gains. The obtained results show that the observer value coincides with the actual ones and it has been demonstrated through numerical examples. Abstract:This paper presents the control design of the two-phase Stefan problem. The two-phase Stefan problem is a representative model of liquid-solid phase transition by describing the time evolutions of the temperature profile which is divided by subdomains of liquid and solid phases as the liquid-solid moving interface position. The mathematical formulation is given by two diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) defined on a time-varying spatial domain described by an ordinary differential equation (ODE) driven by the Neumann boundary values of both PDE states, resulting in a nonlinear coupled PDE-ODE-PDE system. We design a state feedback control law by means of energy-shaping to stabilize the interface position to a desired setpoint by using single boundary heat input. We prove that the closed-loop system under the control law ensures some conditions for model validity and the global exponential stability estimate is shown in $L_2$ norm. Furthermore, the robustness of the closed-loop stability with respect to the uncertainties of the physical parameters is shown. Numerical simulation is provided to illustrate the good performance of the proposed control law in comparison to the control design for the one-phase Stefan problem.

Abstract:The stabilization of an unstable linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) system with both Neumann boundary control and interior control is considered in this work. Point output measurement is available at one end of the physical domain. The choice of a proportional output feedback boundary control is justified by Lyapunov analysis while the design of the interior control is carried out based on the Sturm-Liouville theory. A proportional state feedback is proposed for the interior control with a symmetric kernel function, and the pseudospectral method is used to solve the stability conditions governed by the Sturm-Liouville systems. In addition, an observer is designed using the point measurement at one end of the physical domain, and used to propose an observer-based feedback controller for the PDE system. Both controller and observer gains are designed numerically to make the eigenvalues of the associated Sturm-Liouville problems stable. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:In this paper, both the optimal control problems and the stability for the state-feedback of an unstable linear parabolic diffusion-reaction partical differential equations (PDEs) system with an actuator at the right-hand-side boundary are considered. Using the weak variation approach, we firstly derive the first order necessary conditions for the open loop finite-time horizon problem. Then, we discuss the state-feedback problem of the open loop PDEs system, and get the result of the feedback law through solving a Riccati partial differential equation. Finally, with the feedback law, we prove out the exponential stability for the state-feedback problem that is very innovative and instructive by using the lyapunov method.

We begin to derive the first order necessary conditions for the open loop finite-time horizon problem using the classical variational approach. Then, we discuss the the state-feedback problem, and obtain the feedback law by formulating the Riccati partial differential equation (PDE). Finally, with the feedback law, we could prove the stability for the state-feedback problem exponential stability with any given decay rate in the time domain without solving the Riccati PDE.

Abstract:This paper deals with the stabilization problem of first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with spatial-temporal actuation over the full physical domains. We assume that the interior actuator can be decomposed into a product of spatial and temporal components, where the spatial component satisfies a specific ordinary differential equation (ODE). A Volterra integral transformation is used to convert the original system into a simple target system using the backstepping-like procedure. Unlike the classical backstepping techniques for boundary control problems of PDEs, the internal actuation can not eliminate the residual term that causes the instability of the open-loop system. Thus, an additional differential transformation is introduced to transfer the input from the interior of the domain onto the boundary. Then, a feedback control law is designed using the classic backstepping technique which can stabilize the first-order hyperbolic PDE system in a finite time, which can be proved by using the semigroup arguments. The effectiveness of the design is illustrated with some numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new control synthesis approach for the stabilization of boundary-controlled parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). In the proposed approach, the optimal boundary control is expressed in integral state feedback form with quadratic kernel function, where the quadratic's coefficients are decision variables to be optimized. We introduce a system cost functional to penalize both state and kernel magnitude, and then derive the cost functional's gradient in terms of the solution of an auxiliary “costate” PDE. On this basis, the output stabilization problem can be solved using gradient-based optimization techniques such as sequential quadratic programming. The resulting optimal boundary control is guaranteed to yield closed-loop stability under mild conditions. The primary advantage of our new approach is that the costate PDE is in standard form and can be solved easily using the finite difference method. In contrast, the traditional control synthesis approaches for boundary-controlled parabolic PDEs (i.e., the LQ control and backstepping approaches) require solving non-standard Riccati-type and Klein-Gorden-type PDEs.
Observer-based Event-triggered Boundary Control of the One-phase Stefan Problem

Abstract:This paper provides an observer-based event-triggered boundary control strategy for the one-phase Stefan problem using the position and velocity measurements of the moving interface. The infinite-dimensional backstepping approach is used to design the underlying observer and controller. For the event-triggered implementation of the continuous-time observer-based controller, a dynamic event triggering condition is proposed. The triggering condition determines the times at which the control input needs to be updated. In between events, the control input is applied in a \textit{Zero-Order-Hold} fashion. It is shown that the dwell-time between two triggering instances is uniformly bounded below excluding \textit{Zeno behavior}. Under the proposed event-triggered boundary control approach, the well-posedness of the closed-loop system along with certain model validity conditions is provided. Further, using Lyapunov approach, the global exponential convergence of the closed-loop system to the setpoint is proved. A simulation example is provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

Boundary Feedback Control of Unstable Heat Equation with Space and Time Dependent Coefficient

Abstract:In this paper, we study the control of the linear heat equation with a space and time dependent coefficient function by the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary control laws. This equation models the heat diffusion and space, time dependent heat generation in a one dimensional rod. Without control, the system is unstable if the coefficient function is positive and large. With boundary control based on the state feedback, we show that for the time analytic coefficient $a(x,t)$, the exponential stability of the system at any rate can be achieved. It is further shown that both the control of the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value systems can be stabilized using this method. In doing this, the control kernels are {\it explicitly} calculated as series of approximation and they are used in the simulations. The numerical simulation confirmed the theoretical arguments and the controllability of the system. The possible future works are discussed at the end. This is the continuation of the recent work of Liu [{\it SIAM J. Cont. Optim.} vol. 42, pp. 1033-1043] and Smyshlyaev and Krstic [accepted by {\it Automatica}].

Riccati-feedback Control of a Two-dimensional Two-phase Stefan Problem

Abstract:We discuss the feedback control problem for a two-dimensional two-phase Stefan problem. In our approach, we use a sharp interface representation in combination with mesh-movement to track the interface position. To attain a feedback control, we apply the linear-quadratic regulator approach to a suitable linearization of the problem. We address details regarding the discretization and the interface representation therein. Further, we document the matrix assembly to generate a non-autonomous generalized differential Riccati equation. To numerically solve the Riccati equation, we use low-rank factored and matrix-valued versions of the non-autonomous backward differentiation formulas, which incorporate implicit index reduction techniques. For the numerical simulation of the feedback controlled Stefan problem, we use a time-adaptive fractional-step-theta scheme. We provide the implementations for the developed methods and test these in several numerical experiments. With these experiments we show that our feedback control approach is applicable to the Stefan control problem and makes this large-scale problem computable. Also, we discuss the influence of several controller design parameters, such as the choice of inputs and outputs.

Abstract:This paper presents a control design for the one-phase Stefan problem under actuator delay via a backstepping method. The Stefan problem represents a liquid-solid phase change phenomenon which describes the time evolution of a material's temperature profile and the interface position. The actuator delay is modeled by a first-order hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE), resulting in a cascaded transport-diffusion PDE system defined on a time-varying spatial domain described by an ordinary differential equation (ODE). Two nonlinear backstepping transformations are utilized for the control design. The setpoint restriction is given to guarantee a physical constraint on the proposed controller for the melting process. This constraint ensures the exponential convergence of the moving interface to a setpoint and the exponential stability of the temperature equilibrium profile and the delayed controller in the ${\cal H}_1$ norm. Furthermore, robustness analysis with respect to the delay mismatch between the plant and the controller is studied, which provides analogous results to the exact compensation by restricting the control gain.

Abstract:We consider the inverse multiphase Stefan problem, where information on the heat flux on the fixed boundary is missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundaries. Optimal control framework is pursued, where boundary heat flux is the control, and the optimality criteria consist of the minimization of the $L_2$-norm declination of the trace of the solution to the Stefan problem from the temperature measurement on the fixed right boundary. The state vector solves multiphase Stefan problem in a weak formulation, which is equivalent to Neumann problem for the quasilinear parabolic PDE with discontinuous coefficient. Full discretization through finite differences is implemented and discrete optimal control problem is introduced. We prove well-posedness in a Sobolev space framework and convergence of discrete optimal control problems to the original problem both with respect to the cost functional and control. Along the way, the convergence of the method of finite differences for the weak solution of the multiphase Stefan problem is proved. The proof is based on achieving a uniform $L_{\infty}$ bound, and $W_2^{1,1}$-energy estimate for the discrete multiphase Stefan problem.

Abstract:This paper concerns the null controllability of the two-phase 1D Stefan problem with distributed controls. This is a free-boundary problem that models solidification or melting processes. In each phase, a parabolic equation, completed with initial and boundary conditions must be satisfied; the phases are separated by a phase-change interface where an additional free-boundary condition is imposed. We assume that two localized sources of heating/cooling controls act on the system (one in each phase). We prove a local null controllability result: the temperatures and the interface can be respectively steered to zero and to a prescribed location provided the initial data and interface position are sufficiently close to the targets. The ingredients of the proofs are a compactness-uniqueness argument (to deduce appropriate observability estimates adapted to constraints) and a fixed-point formulation and resolution of the controllability problem (to deduce the result for the nonlinear system). We also prove a negative result corresponding to the case where only one control acts on the system and the interface does not collapse to the boundary.

Abstract:In this study, a new boundary control scheme is proposed for a class of unstable heat conduction systems based on active disturbance rejection control and frequency domain analysis methods. The unstable heat conduction systems studied here corresponds to a thin rod with surface heat loss and internal heat generation. An active disturbance rejection boundary controller is designed to stabilize the unstable heat conduction systems. Using the frequency domain analysis method, the Nyquist stability criterion for distributed parameter systems, the relative stability indices gain margin, phase margin, and exponential stability speed can be obtained for performance evaluation, and a constructive parameter-tuning method for controller is proposed. Finally, it is proved that an active disturbance rejection boundary controller can stabilize the unstable heat conduction systems with one unstable pole, and the simulation results demonstrate that the temperature profile of the whole rod has good convergence properties under both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary control.

Abstract:This work focuses on predictive output feedback control of linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) systems with state and control constraints. Under the assumption that a finite, yet sufficiently large, number of output measurements is available, two predictive output feedback controllers are constructed and sufficient conditions are derived under which these controllers enforce stability and constraint satisfaction in the infinite-dimensional closed-loop system, respectively. The controllers are applied to an example of a linear parabolic PDE with Dirichlet boundary conditions subject to state and control constraints, and the numerical simulations demonstrate their ability to enforce closed-loop system stability and constraint satisfaction.

Abstract:Shell-type components and structures are very common in many mechanical and structural systems. Modelling and analysis of adaptive piezothermoelastic shell laminates represent high level of sophistication and complexity. Accordingly, a numerical method is developed to investigate the complicated temperature, mechanical, and control interactions of piezothermoelastic shell composites in this study. Constitutive equations and governing equations of a generic piezothermoelastic continuum are defined first. Strain–displacement relations, electric field–potential relations, thermal gradient–temperature relations of laminated shell composites are then defined. A new piezothermoelastic composite triangular shell finite element is formulated and developed. Matrix equations of the piezothermoelastic shell laminate are derived, in which mechanical, temperature, and electric force vectors are also defined. The electric force vector is used to active control of the shell laminates. Finite element solutions of a piezoelectric laminated composite plate are compared with experimental data and numerical solutions first. Distributed control of a piezoelectric laminated semicircular shell subjected to mechanical and temperature (thermal shock) excitations is investigated and control effectiveness evaluated.

Abstract:This paper shows a finite-dimensional controller design for the boundary control of the heat equation on a 1D spatial domain. The controller exponentially stabilizes the plant at the desired equilibrium profile. The controller is defined using irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems formulation, and it is motivated by passivity-based control techniques developed for port-Hamiltonian systems defined on 1D spatial domains. The boundary controller is designed to have an exponentially stabilizing energy-shaping and entropy-assignment effect. It works with an actuation at one boundary and a reflective boundary condition at the other. The controller can handle situations where measurements are available at only one or both boundaries. The paper characterizes the existence of structural invariant functions to shape the closed-loop energy and assign the required closed-loop entropy. The design approach is illustrated through numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper provides global exponential stabilization results by means of boundary feedback control for 1-D nonlinear unstable reaction-diffusion Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlinearities of superlinear growth. The class of systems studied are parabolic PDEs with nonlinear reaction terms that provide "damping" when the norm of the state is large (the class includes reaction-diffusion PDEs with polynomial nonlinearities). The case of Dirichlet actuation at one end of the domain is considered and a Control-Lypunov Functional construction is applied in conjunction with Stampacchia's truncation method. The paper also provides several important auxiliary results; among which is an extension of Wirtinger's inequality, used here for the construction of the Control Lyapunov functional.

Abstract:Stabilization of a coupled system consisting of a parabolic partial differential equation and an elliptic partial differential equation is considered. Even in the situation when the parabolic equation is exponentially stable on its own, the coupling between the two equations can cause instability in the overall system. A backstepping approach is used to derive a boundary control input that stabilizes the coupled system. The result is an explicit expression for the stabilizing control law. The second part of the paper involves the design of exponentially convergent observers to estimate the state of the coupled system, given some partial boundary measurements. The observation error system is shown to be exponentially stable, again by employing a backstepping method. This leads to the design of observer gains in closed-form. Finally, we address the output-feedback problem by combining the observers with the state feedback boundary control. The theoretical results are demonstrated with numerical simulations.
