Abstract:Wurtzite materials exhibit both semiconductor and piezoelectric properties under strains due to the non-central symmetric crystal structures. The three-way coupling of semiconductor properties, piezoelectric polarization and optical excitation in ZnO, GaN, CdS and other piezoelectric semiconductors leads to the emerging field of piezo-phototronics. This effect can efficiently manipulate the emission intensity of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by utilizing the piezo-polarization charges created at the junction upon straining to modulate the energy band diagrams and the optoelectronic processes, such as generation, separation, recombination and/or transport of charge carriers. Starting from fundamental physics principles, recent progress in piezo-phototronic-effect-enhanced LEDs is reviewed; following their development from single-nanowire pressure-sensitive devices to high-resolution array matrices for pressure-distribution mapping applications. The piezo-phototronic effect provides a promising method to enhance the light emission of LEDs based on piezoelectric semiconductors through applying static strains, and may find perspective applications in various optoelectronic devices and integrated systems.
High-Pressure Single-Crystal Structures of 3D Lead-Halide Hybrid Perovskites and Pressure Effects on their Electronic and Optical Properties

Abstract:We report the first high-pressure single-crystal structures of hybrid perovskites. The crystalline semiconductors (MA)PbX3 (MA = CH3NH3 (+), X = Br(-) or I(-)) afford us the rare opportunity of understanding how compression modulates their structures and thereby their optoelectronic properties. Using atomic coordinates obtained from high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction we track the perovskites' precise structural evolution upon compression. These structural changes correlate well with pressure-dependent single-crystal photoluminescence (PL) spectra and high-pressure bandgaps derived from density functional theory. We further observe dramatic piezochromism where the solids become lighter in color and then transition to opaque black with compression. Indeed, electronic conductivity measurements of (MA)PbI3 obtained within a diamond-anvil cell show that the material's resistivity decreases by 3 orders of magnitude between 0 and 51 GPa. The activation energy for conduction at 51 GPa is only 13.2(3) meV, suggesting that the perovskite is approaching a metallic state. Furthermore, the pressure response of mixed-halide perovskites shows new luminescent states that emerge at elevated pressures. We recently reported that the perovskites (MA)Pb(Br x I1-x )3 (0.2 < x < 1) reversibly form light-induced trap states, which pin their PL to a low energy. This may explain the low voltages obtained from solar cells employing these absorbers. Our high-pressure PL data indicate that compression can mitigate this PL redshift and may afford higher steady-state voltages from these absorbers. These studies show that pressure can significantly alter the transport and thermodynamic properties of these technologically important semiconductors.

Abstract:Halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have great potential in the field of optoelectronics, owing to their excellent photophysical characteristics. Herein, the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics (involving the PL quantum yield (QY) and radiative lifetime) and carrier dynamics of FAPbBr(3) NCs have been further investigated by applying the pressure. Pressure-dependent steady spectral data confirm that FAPbBr(3) NCs pass through a cubic Pm (3) over barm, a cubic supercell Im3, and an orthorhombic Pnma in turn. The deep defect and the phase change originated from pressure can decrease the PL QY, prolong the radiative lifetime, and effectively manipulate the carrier dynamics involving the carriers captured by defects and free carriers. Pm3m owns excellent properties of PL and carriers, which is suitable for displaying devices, but Pnma can restrict photon emission and carrier capture, which has potential in photovoltaic devices. These results allow us to advance the practical application of this material in the future.

Abstract:The [PbX6]4− octahedra in 1D zigzag edge‐sharing perovskites, (C6H10N2)PbX4 (X = Br, Cl), distort under high pressure, resulting in shortened Pb─X bond lengths and altered Pb─X─Pb bond angles. These changes affect their electronic structure and bandgap, leading to piezochromism, along with excitation‐dependent emission and emission enhancement phenomena. 1D zigzag edge‐sharing perovskites have generated intense research interest due to their unique structures and optoelectronic properties. Recent efforts have focused on refining these structures to enhance their efficiency across various applications. Herein, high‐pressure is utilized to modulate the properties of two Pb‐based perovskites, (AMP)PbCl4 and (AMP)PbBr4 (where AMP2+ = C6H10N22+), characterized by 1D zigzag edge‐sharing [PbX4]2−∞ chains linked by AMP through hydrogen bonding. An inverse excitation‐dependent emission phenomenon and emission enhancement are observed in these two perovskites, attributed to the contraction of inhomogeneously coordinated [PbX6]4− octahedra. Pressure‐induced lattice contraction promotes the overlap of Pb and X orbitals, resulting in a decrease in the bandgap. Concurrently, pressure‐induced phase transitions, due to the distortion of [PbX6]4− octahedra, lead to discontinuous decreases in the bandgap. These high‐pressure optical and structural explorations facilitate the systematic design of halide perovskites with desired characteristics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are of great interest for optoelectronics because of their high quantum efficiency in solar cells and light-emitting devices. However, exploring an effective strategy to further improve their optical activities remains a considerable challenge. Here, we report that nanocrystals (NCs) of the initially nonfluorescent zero-dimensional (0D) cesium lead halide perovskite Cs4PbBr6 exhibit a distinct emission under a high pressure of 3.01 GPa. Subsequently, the emission intensity of Cs4PbBr6 NCs experiences a significant increase upon further compression. Joint experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that such pressure-induced emission (PIE) may be ascribed to the enhanced optical activity and the increased binding energy of self-trapped excitons upon compression. This phenomenon is a result of the large distortion of [PbBr6]4− octahedral motifs resulting from a structural phase transition. Our findings demonstrate that high pressure can be a robust tool to boost the photoluminescence efficiency and provide insights into the relationship between the structure and optical properties of 0D MHPs under extreme conditions.

Abstract:It is known that the equilibrium properties of open classical systems that are strongly coupled to a heat bath are described by a set of thermodynamic potentials related to the system's Hamiltonian of mean force. By adapting this framework to a more general class of nonequilibrium states, we show that the equilibrium properties of the bath can be well defined, even when the system is arbitrarily far from equilibrium and correlated with the bath. These states, which retain a notion of temperature, take the form of conditional equilibrium distributions. For out-of-equilibrium processes we show that the average entropy production quantifies the extent to which the system and bath state is driven away from the conditional equilibrium distribution. In addition, we show that the stochastic entropy production satisfies a generalized Crooks relation and can be used to quantify time asymmetry of correlated nonequilibrium processes. These results naturally extend the familiar properties of entropy production in weakly coupled systems to the strong coupling regime. Experimental measurements of the entropy production at strong coupling could be pursued using optomechanics or trapped-ion systems, which allow strong coupling to be engineered.
Manipulating efficient light emission in two-dimensional perovskite crystals by pressure-induced anisotropic deformation.

Abstract:The hybrid nature and soft lattice of organolead halide perovskites render their structural changes and optical properties susceptible to external driving forces such as temperature and pressure, remarkably different from conventional semiconductors. Here, we investigate the pressure-induced optical response of a typical two-dimensional perovskite crystal, phenylethylamine lead iodide. At a moderate pressure within 3.5 GPa, its photoluminescence red-shifts continuously, exhibiting an ultrabroad energy tunability range up to 320 meV in the visible spectrum, with quantum yield remaining nearly constant. First-principles calculations suggest that an out-of-plane quasi-uniaxial compression occurs under a hydrostatic pressure, while the energy is absorbed by the reversible and elastic tilting of the benzene rings within the long-chain ligands. This anisotropic structural deformation effectively modulates the quantum confinement effect by 250 meV via barrier height lowering. The broad tunability within a relatively low pressure range will expand optoelectronic applications to a new paradigm with pressure as a tuning knob.

Abstract:The phenomenon of pressure-induced emission alterations related to complex excitonic dynamics in 2D lead halide perovskites (LHPs) has gained considerable attention for understanding their structure-property relationship and obtaining inaccessible luminescence under ambient conditions. However, the well-known pressure-induced emissions are limited to the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs) due to the structural distortion under compression, which goes against the advantage of the highly pure emission of LHPs. Here, the pressure-induced detrapping from STEs to free excitons (FEs) accompanied by the dramatic transition from broadband orangish emission to narrow blue emission has been achieved in chiral 2D LHPs and R- and S-[4MeOPEA](2)PbBr4, (4MeOPEA = 4-methoxy-alpha-methylbenzylammonium). The combined experimental and calculated results reveal that the distortion level of PbBr6 octahedra of R- and S-[4MeOPEA](2)PbBr4 exhibits an unusually significant reduction as the applied pressure increases, which leads to decreased electron-phonon coupling and self-trapped energy barrier and consequently enables the detrapping of STEs to FEs. This work illustrates the dramatic exciton transfer in 2D LHPs and highlights the potential for realizing highly efficient and pure light emissions by manipulating the structural distortion via strain engineering.

Abstract:CsPbBr3 Single Crystal High pressure exerted on CsPbBr3 single crystal using diamond anvil cell leads to improved photoluminescence intensity due to the decreased dynamic Rashba splitting. Application of higher pressure transforms it into a pure indirect bandgap phase, which can be maintained at near-ambient pressure. Abstract:Self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions derived from inorganic octahedral units make metal halide perovskites promising photoluminescence materials for light-emitting applications. However, there is still little understanding of the intrinsic STE emissions in metal halide perovskites or derivatives with nonoctahedral units. In this work, via high pressure compression, remarkable STE emission enhancement is, for the first time, realized in one-dimensional CsCu2I3 crystals with {CuCl4} tetrahedral units. The intertetrahedral distortion is believed to induce the slight emission enhancement of the ambient phase under initial compression. Notably, the obvious structural distortions of both inter- and intratetrahedra are responsible for the significant emission enhancement of the high pressure phase. This work not only sheds light on the structure-optical property relationships of tetrahedron-based halide complexes, but also may provide guidance for the design and fabrication of highly luminescent metal halides.

Abstract:An unusual transition from self‐trapped exciton to free exciton emission occurs in (HM)Pb2Br6 under high pressure, accompanied by a 42‐fold enhancement in intensity compared to its initial emission. These phenomena are attributed to the anisotropic compression, resulting in enhanced structural rigidity and significant reductions in Pb─Pb and Pb─Br bond lengths within the three fundamental [Pb2Br6]2− octahedra. Understanding the luminescence mechanics of metal halide perovskites is the key to uncovering the detailed pathways responsible for remarkable photophysical properties and engineering materials with enhanced optoelectronic properties. In this work, high pressure is employed to reveal the self‐trapped exciton (STE) emission features of a 1D lead bromide perovskitoid (HM)Pb2Br6. Upon compression, a remarkable 42‐fold enhancement in the intensity compared to the initial emission, along with exciton transfer from STE emission to narrow free exciton emission, is achieved in (HM)Pb2Br6. These phenomena are related to the anisotropic compression of (HM)Pb2Br6, which results in enhanced structural stiffness and a significant reduction in the distances of Pb─Pb bond lengths between inter‐[Pb2Br6]2− chains, as well as Pb─Br bond lengths within the three basic intra‐[Pb2Br6]2− octahedra. These results provide essential insights into the intriguing photophysics of STEs and shed new light on the dramatic exciton transfer to control and enhance the optical properties of the metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Broadband self-trapped exciton (STE) emission in two-dimensional (2D) perovskites is attracting intense attention due to its promising solid-state lighting application. However, few studies have focused on the evolution of the structure-optical properties of 2D perovskite nanosheets under pressure tuning. We report a remarkably enhanced broad STE emission in all-inorganic 2D CsPbCl3 perovskite nanosheets under pressure. Comprehensive research analysis demonstrates that 2D CsPbCl3 perovskite nanosheets undergo an isostructural transition and then transform into an amorphous state; theoretical calculations confirm this. Pressure-driven broadband emission with significant Stokes shifts caused by raising the lattice distortion to enhance the exciton–phonon coupling is observed. A remarkable enhancement of STE emission was achieved, which is highly correlated with the distortions of octahedra that effectively enhanced the radiative recombination of STEs. This research enhances the basic understanding of the structure-optical properties of CsPbCl3 perovskite nanosheets and is expected to promote research on perovskites under high pressures.

Abstract:Optimizing the structure and tuning the optical properties in low-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites are crucial to practical applications for stable solid-state lighting. Herein, we performed high-pressure investigations on one-dimensional (1D) postperovskite (TDMP)PbBr4 (TDMP = trans-2,5-dimethylpiperaziniium), and structure and optical properties under pressure are studied. (TDMP)PbBr4 exhibits color tunable emission from cool white light to yellow orange as the pressure increases from atmospheric pressure to 20.0 GPa. It was found that high pressure would facilitate trapping the free exciton (free exciton) to form a self-trapped exciton (STE) state due to increased electron-phonon interaction, thus enhancing STE emission in the pressure range of 4.0-7.0 GPa. At above 7.0 GPa, the STE emission is quenched, which is due to the phonon-assisted nonradiative relaxation. Meanwhile, (TDMP)PbBr4 displays reversible piezochromism from colorless to yellow under pressure as a result of the compound undergoing a reversible structural transformation. This work provides an insightful perspective on revealing the relationship between structure and optical properties of 1D postperovskites under high pressure.
Pressure‐Tuning Photothermal Synergy to Optimize the Photoelectronic Properties in Amorphous Halide Perovskite Cs3Bi2I9

Abstract:The tunable and broadband photoresponse from 520 to 1650 nm with an optimal responsivity of 6.81 mA W−1 and fast response times of 95/96 ms at 1650 nm is achieved in the pressure‐induced amorphization process of the halide perovskite Cs3Bi2I9, which provides some new insights into further investigating the unexplored properties and applications of amorphous perovskites. Effective modification of the structure and properties of halide perovskites via the pressure engineering strategy has attracted enormous interest in the past decade. However, sufficient effort and insights regarding the potential properties and applications of the high‐pressure amorphous phase are still lacking. Here, the superior and tunable photoelectric properties that occur in the pressure‐induced amorphization process of the halide perovskite Cs3Bi2I9 are demonstrated. With increasing pressure, the photocurrent with xenon lamp illumination exhibits a rapid increase and achieves an almost five orders of magnitude increment compared to its initial value. Impressively, a broadband photoresponse from 520 to 1650 nm with an optimal responsivity of 6.81 mA W−1 and fast response times of 95/96 ms at 1650 nm is achieved upon successive compression. The high‐gain, fast, broadband, and dramatically enhanced photoresponse properties of Cs3Bi2I9 are the result of comprehensive photoconductive and photothermoelectric mechanisms, which are associated with enhanced orbital coupling caused by an increase in BiI interactions in the [BiI6]3− cluster, even in the amorphous state. These findings provide new insights for further exploring the potential properties and applications of amorphous perovskites.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) -oriented perovskites exhibit superior optoelectronic properties, offering significant potential in photovoltaic, light-emitting, and photodetection applications. Nevertheless, their enlarged interlayer spacing restricts longitudinal carrier transport, thereby limiting its potential applications. While -oriented 2D perovskites provide a prospective solution with their compact interlayer spacing, their inherent structure, characterized by octahedra tilting, indirectly hinders carrier transport due to the generation of self-trapped excitons (STEs) caused by strong electron-phonon coupling. Here, we adeptly regulate the photoluminescence (PL) from STEs to free excitons (FEs) emission within the 2D -oriented (API)PbBr4 single crystal through structure optimization under pressure treatment. Besides, we observed anisotropic FE transport with an anisotropy ratio of 4.97. The exciton mobility reaches a peak of 93.6 cm2 V-1s-1 at 2.7 GPa, a value comparable to those of their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts, which is attributed to a reduction in electron-phonon coupling and exciton reduced mass. Additionally, this ultrafast exciton transport significantly enhances UV light responsivity, exhibiting an increase of approximately 5000 times at 2.7 GPa in comparison to ambient conditions. These findings highlight the prospective application of 2D -oriented perovskites in high-performance optoelectronic devices through intrinsic structural modulation.

Abstract:The intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) emission band in the dual fluorescence of the 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) molecular crystal exhibits increase in response to compression up to 10 GPa. On the basis of Raman and angle dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) experiments combining with computational studies, the mechanism of this phenomenon could be assigned to the change of the intramolecular geometrical conformation, especially for the decrease of the dihedral angle between the dimethylamino (NMe2) and phenyl moieties. Meanwhile the reduction of excited-state energies and the HOMO-LUMO band gap leads to the redshifts of photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the absorption edge, respectively. Competing with the aggregation caused quenching (ACQJ effect, the planarity of molecular conformation and the slight rotation of the NMe2 group under high pressure both could enhance the ICT process, which will contribute to the revelation of the ICT mechanism and designs of new piezochromic luminescent materials.

Abstract:Abstract Designing two-dimensional halide perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic applications requires deep understanding of the structure-property relationship that governs their excitonic behaviors. However, a design framework that considers both intra and interlayer structures modified by the A-site and spacer cations, respectively, has not been developed. Here, we use pressure to synergistically tune the intra and interlayer structures and uncover the structural modulations that result in improved optoelectronic performance. Under applied pressure, (BA) 2 (GA)Pb 2 I 7 exhibits a 72-fold boost of photoluminescence and 10-fold increase of photoconductivity. Based on the observed structural change, we introduce a structural descriptor χ that describes both the intra and interlayer characteristics and establish a general quantitative relationship between χ and photoluminescence quantum yield: smaller χ correlates with minimized trapped excitons and more efficient emission from free excitons. Building on this principle, we design a perovskite (CMA) 2 (FA)Pb 2 I 7 that exhibits a small χ and an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.3%.

Abstract:Lead-free all-inorganic halide perovskites with an outstanding stability and a nontoxic nature are promising substitutes for hybrid lead halide counterparts in optoelectronic devices and solar cells. Herein, we investigate the relationship between the structure and optical properties of quadruple halide perovskite Cs4MnBi2Cl12 via a high-pressure technique, and in situ spectroscopic analyses with density functional theory calculations as well. Cs4MnBi2Cl12 undergoes two distinct band gap narrowing processes and a sharp piezochromic transition upon compression, accompanied by two pressure-induced phase transitions. Abstract:Pressure engineering can access novel optoelectronic properties and crystal structures in halide perovskite materials with soft lattice. However, such pressure‐induced phenomena are commonly realized under large pressure or difficult to retain at atmospheric pressure, thus severely hindering their prospects in practical applications. Herein, the pressure‐treated Mn‐doped/undoped Cs2NaBiCl6 exhibits a largely retained bandgap narrowing of 12.2% relative to its initial state via compression–decompression cycles, along with durable stability at ambient conditions. This abnormal behavior is attributed to the disordered arrangement of inorganic [NaCl6]5−/[BiCl6]3− octahedra, which occurs in the metastable state of double perovskites from structural reconstruction during decompression processes, and is accompanied by a characteristic of long‐range order and short‐range disorder. A remarkable pressure‐induced emission enhancement from Mn2+ ions is discovered upon modest compression, especially at <0.5 GPa, which results from the increased energy transfer efficiency from Bi3+ to Mn2+ ions owing to more overlapped electronic wave functions from each other. This work can be extended to the design and synthesis of new semiconductor materials with enhanced optoelectronic properties. Retainable bandgap narrowing and enhanced Mn2+ emission with remarkable piezochromism are achieved in sodium–bismuth double perovskites by carrying out pressure engineering, mapping a new route to improve the optoelectronic properties of double perovskites by introducing chemical pressure and lattice strain, or constructing metastable states for practical applications in the future.
