Abstract:ObjectThe aim of this study was to test the feasibility of sentinel lymph node detection using contrast ultrasound imaging in normal subjects and patients with breast lesions.MethodsThirteen subjects including 2 normal subjects and 11 patients with breast masses were included this study. Ultrasound contrast agent SonoVue was injected subcutaneously into the upper quadrant of breast or adjacent mass at a total dose of 1-2 ml at a given location. Real time ultrasound with contrast imaging modes and high frequency probe (5-13 MHz) was used to image the region of the injection and axillary areas.ResultsA total of 17 injections was performed. One to ten minutes after contrast injection, hyperechogenic lymphatic channels were visualized in 13 cases and sentinel lymph nodes were enhanced progressively over time on grey-scale contrast imaging in 10 cases. The enhanced nodes appeared as either uniform or spoke-like enhancement pattern. In two normal subjects and one patient, lymphatic channel and node did not detect after two injections. Some lymphatic channels entered into deep tissue and cannot be traced to lymph node(s).ConclusionSonoVue-enhanced ultrasound imaging may be feasible to visualize breast lymphatic system which may play an important role for evaluation of breast tumor.
