Abstract:Forests in Ethiopia are of high ecological value, but their area is declining at an alarming rate due to various anthropogenic pressures. We identified and characterized plant communities, species diversity, and their determinants in forest patches in Wolaita, Southwest Ethiopia. We recorded the number of individuals of plants, species cover-abundance, and environmental factors in 126 (20 m × 20 m) quadrats. We sampled soils from three layers of 10 cm depth each and took air-dried composite samples to soil laboratory of Arba Minch University for analyses. The plant community–environment relationship was determined using canonical correspondence analysis. We used various diversity indices to compute species diversity. Species composition resemblance between the plant communities was determined using Sorensen's similarity coefficient. We identified five distinct plant communities using hierarchical agglomerative clustering. Diospyros abyssinica—Combretum collinum community was rich, while Combretum molle—Ficus vasta community was poor in species. Juniperus procera—Olea europaea community and Cordia africana—Prunus africana community showed the highest species similarity. D. abyssinica—C. collinum community had the maximum Shannon entropy ( H = 4.19), while C. molle—F. vasta community had the minimum ( H = 3.17). Shannon entropy was high in the study area ( H = 3.75; Evenness = 0.86; Number of effective species = 41.7). J. procera—O. europaea community was dense (1014 individuals' ha −1 ), whereas C. molle—F. vasta community was sparse (762 individuals ha −1 ). Altitude, pH, EC, total nitrogen, sand, and clay explained most of the variations among community types. In general, low level of disturbance was detected in the study areas. Anthropogenic pressures, such as livestock grazing, and browsing, tree cutting for construction material and fuelwood, and mowing of grasses for livestock feed and roof cover may expose the soil to erosion and can alter the composition and structure of the forest patches in the study area. The low disturbance value, the high Shannon entropy, and other metrics show that these communities are of high natural value; thus, their preservation is of utmost importance. Monitoring and conservation intervention are necessary to sustain the importance of forest ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract Floristic diversity and the composition of vascular plants are described for the moist Afromontane forest (MAF) of Wondo Genet, south-central Ethiopia. A total of 75 (20 x 20 m) quadrats were sampled and data on species identity, abundance, elevation, slope and aspect were recorded. Different diversity indices and ordination techniques were used to analyze the data. A total of 240 plant species including seven endemic plant species were found representing 94 families and 210 genera, of which trees constitute 23.8%, shrubs 25%, herbs 35%, lianas 11.3% and ferns 5%. Cluster and indicator species analyses revealed five plant communities described as: Teclea nobilis-Calpurnia aurea, Erythrococca trichogyne-Millettia ferruginea, Croton macrostachyus-Vernonia hochstetteri, Protea gaguedi-Rhus retinorrhoea and Dodonaea angustifolia-Hypericum quartinianum. Elevation (R2=0.48, P<0.001), slope (R2=0.14, P<0.001) and aspect (R2=0.04, P<0.01) correlated significantly and negatively with species richness, whereas only elevation (R2=0.30, P<0.001) and slope (R2=0.13, P<0.001) related significantly and negatively with abundance. Sørensen’s similarity coefficient indicates that the forest of Wondo Genet is similar to moist montane forests of southwestern and southeastern Ethiopia. Given the high diversity, coupled with the existence of endemic species, ecosystem conservation and restoration strategies with further research are warranted.

Abstract:The study was conducted in Endiras Forest, northwest Ethiopia, to evaluate the effects of environmental variables on the patterns of plant community formation. A systematic random sampling technique was used to collect vegetation data from 56 (20 m × 20 m) plots laid at 100 m intervals on ten transects. In each plot, the species encountered and its percent cover abundance were recorded, which was later transformed into a modified Braun-Blanquet scale. The composite soil samples collected from 15 cm × 15 cm subplots were examined for 13 soil parameters. Communities were determined using cluster analysis. The Shannon-Wiener index was employed to quantify species diversity. The relationships between species and environmental variables were evaluated using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Seventy-three woody plant species, distributed in 40 families, were documented. Fabaceae was found to be the most species-rich family (20.55%). Five communities were generated from the cluster analyses that vary in diversity. Nine environmental variables were found to be significant in determining patterns of community formation ( P < 0.05). Organic matter, pH, and altitude, highly correlated with CCA axis 1, largely shaped the community formation patterns. Various patterns of community formation demonstrate the need to design different conservation measures.

Pattern of Plant Community Distribution along the Elevational Gradient and Anthropogenic Disturbance in Gole Forest, Ethiopia

Abstract:Vegetation-environment relationships are usually studied along elevational gradient. The patterns of plant community distribution in Gole forest, Ethiopia, were studied along elevational gradient and disturbances. Disturbances were recorded following the elevational gradient. For vegetation data collection, 62 sample plots of size 20 × 20 m were established along an elevational gradient (2728–3480 m.a.s.l). Data on species composition and environmental variables were measured and recorded in each plot. The elevation of each sample plot was measured using Garmin GPS. Anthropogenic disturbances in each plot were estimated using the following scales: 0 = no disturbance, 1 = slightly disturbed, 2 = moderately disturbed, and 3 = highly disturbed. R statistical package was used for cluster and ordination analysis. Boxplots and analysis of variance were used to assess the relationships between plant communities and environmental variables. Sorensen’s similarity coefficient was used to detect similarities and dissimilarities among communities. A total of 114 plant species belonging to 57 families and 94 genera were identified. Five plant community types were identified using agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis. Every plant community had differences in composition and environmental variables. The variation in plant community distributions was significantly related to elevation and disturbance. Plant community distribution was negatively correlated with elevation ( P < 0.05 ) and also with disturbance ( P < 0.05 ). Sorensen’s similarity index showed that there was a difference in the distribution of plant species composition among the communities. The difference in plant community distribution of Gole forest was significantly related to elevation. Disturbances also have a considerable influence on the plant communities and mitigation of disturbance should be the main measure that needs to be taken into account in conservation planning in the study area.
Plant community analysis along environmental gradients in moist afromontane forest of Gerba Dima, South-western Ethiopia

Abstract:Abstract Background This study was carried out in Gerba Dima Forest, South-Western Ethiopia, to determine the floristic composition, species diversity and community types along environmental gradients. Identifying and interpreting the structure of species assemblages is the main goal of plant community ecology. Investigation of forest community composition and structure is very useful in understanding the status of tree population, regeneration, and diversity for conservation purposes. Method Ninety sample plots having a size of 25 × 25 m (625 m 2 ) were laid by employing stratified random sampling. Nested plots were used to sample plants of different sizes and different environmental variables. All woody plant species with Diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 2.5 cm and height ≥ 1.5 m were recorded in 25 m × 25 m plots. Hierarchical (agglomerative) cluster analysis was performed using the free statistical software R version 3.6.1 using package cluster to classify the vegetation into plant community types. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) ordination was used in describing the pattern of plant communities along an environmental gradient. Result One hundred and eighty plant species belonging to 145 genera, 69 families and comprising of 15 endemic species were recorded. Of these, 52 species (28.9%) were trees, 6 species (3.33%) were Trees/shrubs, 31 species (17.22%) were shrubs, 76 species (42.22%) were herbs, and 15 species (8.33%) were Lianas. Rubiaceae , Acanthaceae and Asteraceae were the richest family each represented by 11 genera and 11 species (6.11%), 9 genera and 11 species (6.11%), 6 genera and 11 species (6.11%), respectively of total floristic composition. Cluster analysis resulted in five different plant communities and this result was supported by the ordination result. RDA result showed altitude was the main environmental variable in determining the plant communities. The ANOVA test indicated that the five community types differ significantly from each other with regard to Electrical Conductivity and Potassium. Conclusions Description of floristic diversity of species in Gerba Dima forest revealed the presence of high species diversity and richness. The presence of endemic plant species in the study forest shows the potential of the area for biodiversity conservation.

The study was conducted at Gesha and Sayilem districts of the Kaffa Zone with the objective of identifying the floristic compositions, plant community types, and associated environmental factors of the forest. Stratified random sampling technique was used. A total of 90 plots were used to collect vegetation data. The plant community classification was performed using agglomerative Hierarchical cluster analysis Ward’s linkage method was applied in R-software. Species diversity and evenness were evaluated using the Shannon diversity and evenness indices respectively. The study revealed that the study area composed of 300 species that belong to 239 genera in 96 families. Asteraceae was the most abundant family followed by Fabaceae, Acanthaceae, Poaceae, Rubiaceae, and Euphorbiaceae accounting 37%, 15%, 14%, 13%, 12%, and 9% respectively. Five plant community types were identified and these were Ilex mitis-Syzygium guineense, Pouteria adolfi-friedericii-Schefflera abyssinica, Millettia ferruginea-Sapium ellipticum, Arundinaria alpina and Schefflera volkensii-Masea-lanceolata community types. Among the community types, Pouteria adolfi-friedericii-Syzygium guineense community was the most diverse whereas Arundinaria alpina community was the least diverse community. Canonical Correspondence of vegetation data analysis indicated that altitude, disturbance, slope, phosphorus, and the electrical conductivity were the environmental factors that significantly influence the plant communities. The high dependency of local communities on the forest resources is affecting the plant biodiversity. Thus, conservation of the forest through the introduction of sustainable forest management interventions including participatory forest management seems an appropriate action.

Abstract:Ethiopia Province has diverse forest resources. However, it has decreased over time, leaving the country's forest with only remnant patches. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine the species composition, structure and regeneration status of woody plant species along disturbance gradients. To collect the data, the forests were first stratified into low disturbed (LD), moderately disturbed (MD) and heavily disturbed (HD) groups based on information from reconnaissance site visits and consultations with key informants. Three transect lines were laid systematically 200 m apart, and rectangular plots 10 m∗20 m (200 m2) in length were laid at 50 m intervals along each transect, for a total of 27 plots. The DBH and height of all woody individuals with ≥5 cm and ≥2 m were measured. Seedling and sapling data were recorded in four subplots of 2 m∗5 m (10 m2) respectevly in the opposite corner of the main plot. Woody species density, richness, evenness, diversity, frequency and IVI were determined for each disturbance class, and one-way ANOVA and mean comparison tests were used to examine significant differences among disturbance classes. A total of 37 woody species and 27 families were recorded. Based on structural analysis, only Croton macrostachyus exhibited an inverted J shape. It is concluded that woody species composition was affected by human disturbance. Therefore, a concentrated form of forest conservation should be established to protect against excessive human disturbance.
Typology of the woody plant communities of the Ethiopian Nech Sar National Park and an assessment of vegetation-environment relations and human disturbance impacts

Abstract:Background and aims – Deforestation and forest degradation have hugely affected the Southern Ethiopian Rift Valley, jeopardizing biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service provisioning. Quantifying the impacts of human activities on the remaining woody plant communities and recognizing vegetation–environment relationships provide the basis for targeted conservation and rehabilitation.Material and methods – The study was performed in the Nech Sar National Park (NSNP). Based on a large systematic vegetation survey of 104 plots, we quantified the woody vegetation composition, and we provided a vegetation classification based on Non Metric Multidimensional Scaling, cluster analysis and indicator species analysis. Furthermore, we evaluated vegetation – environment relationships and the effects of human disturbance on community composition and woody plant species richness and diversity.Key results – Our analyses revealed three very distinct woody vegetation types (Acacia mellifera-Combretum aculeatum; Lecaniodiscus fraxinifolius-Deinbollia kilimandscharica and Acacia polyacantha-Ficus sycomorus) which were significantly differentiated by soil pH, electrical conductivity, available soil phosphorus and organic matter, and by elevation. Human disturbance, as quantified by a compound Human Disturbance Index (HDI) significantly affected community composition, species richness and diversity, and was significantly positively correlated with species richness and diversity. The latter is likely due to intermediate levels of disturbance and encroachment of disturbance affiliated shrubs such as Dichrostachys cinerea, Lantana camara, and Acalypha fruticosa. Furthermore, the demographic structure of key woody species such as Acacia polyacantha, Acacia tortilis, Balanites aegyptiaca, Diospyros abyssinica, Lecaniodiscus fraxinifolius and Terminalia brownii, showed impacts of human disturbance.Conclusion – Our results provide a baseline for further conservation actions in the NSNP which should be differentially targeted on the different plant community types. Overall, human disturbance seems not to have resulted yet in species richness declines, although it has started to affect the integrity of the delineated vegetation types and resulted in small scale succession.

Abstract:This study assesses the effects of human disturbance on: (1) floristic composition, diversity, and plant community types; and, (2) the regeneration potential of woody species in the Debrelibanos Monastery forest patch in the North Showa zone of Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia. Fifty sample quadrats were placed on parallel transect lines along altitudes in the forest using a systematic sampling design. Quadrats of 1 m2, 100 m2 and 400 m2 were used for recording herbaceous/seedling, sapling and tree species, respectively, with symptoms of different human disturbance effects. One hundred and thirteen species belonging to 52 families were recorded in the forest patch. The results show 459.5 stems ha−1 of tree/shrub species present. Four community types, namely Juniperus procera–Acacia lahai, Carissa spinarum–Acacia abyssinica, Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata–Euphorbia abyssinica and Ficus sur–Allophylus abyssinicus were identified. The overall Shannon–Wiener diversity index was 3.3. The regeneration patterns of some species were poor. Slope, altitude and human activities had significant effects on vegetation patterns and imply that current management practices are not satisfactory to sustain the forest. Unless improved management interventions are made, the sustainability of forest services will be at stake.

Abstract:Environmental conditions determine woody plant life such as species diversity, structure and regeneration status. This research aimed to assess the impact of environmental conditions on woody plant species diversity, structure and regeneration in forest patches of Guna Mountain: the case of Este District, South Gondar Zone, north-west Ethiopia. A total of 71 square sample plots (400 m 2 each) were established at 10 transects laid in five forest patches of the study area to collect vegetation data including the abundance of species, height and diameter at breast height (DBH). Environmental data including available potassium, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, soil texture, electrical conductivity, soil acidity, total nitrogen, organic matter, organic carbon, sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, bulk density, aspect, elevation, slope, latitude and longitude data were collected in the same plots. A correlation analysis between vegetation and environmental data was performed using rcorr ( x ) function in package Hmisc in R Programming Language. The most pronounced impacts were observed in altitude, grazing and pH, positively and silt, sand, electrical conductivity and cation exchange capacity, negatively. In addition, strong and significant impacts on plant structure were also observed due to the variation in soil texture and pH. The difference in aspect, sand and slope also impacted plant regeneration. The study showed that environmental parameters influence the diversity, structure and regeneration of woody plants. These parameters can be considered in the rehabilitation of the vegetation cover and conservation efforts of the rare woody species. Conservation measures that can minimalize the negative influences of environmental conditions can be applied through collaboration with communities around the forest patches.

Predictive Role of Species Diversity on Aboveground Carbon via Functional Diversity and Dominance in the Moist Afromontane Forest: Implications for Conservation Policies

Abstract:The moist Afromontane forest of Ethiopia plays a crucial role in carbon storage and mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To guide effective conservation policies, it is essential to understand the relationship between species diversity and carbon storage in this unique ecosystem. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the response of aboveground carbon (AGC) to species and functional diversity and their effects on AGC in the Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve (YCFBR). Using different plot sizes, we collected vegetation data from the core, buffer, and transitional zones of the reserve. We selected traits related to plant‐life strategy, competition ability, response to disturbances, and climate change. Structural equation models (SEMs) were employed to assess the effects of species diversity, functional diversity, and functional dominance on AGC. Data analysis was conducted using R software. Our results revealed that the effects of species richness on AGC were mediated through functional diversity and functional dominance, as demonstrated by both the full mediation and partial mediation models. This suggests that the selection effects and niche complementarity are mutually exclusive yet equally important for predicting AGC. The findings further indicate that functional diversity and functional dominance together accounted for significant predictors of the AGC by 21% in the YCFBR. From a practical standpoint, findings highlight the importance of conserving species diversity as a means to maintain higher AGC in the tropical moist Afromontane forests. In conclusion, this research significantly contributes to the scientific literature by providing valuable insights into the complex relationship between species diversity and carbon storage. The results emphasize the crucial role of functional diversity and dominance in predicting AGC, underscoring the importance of biodiversity conservation for climate mitigation efforts. These findings have practical implications for the development of effective conservation policies tailored to protect and sustain the carbon storage potential of this unique ecosystem.
Plant community associations with morpho-topographic, geological and land use attributes in a semi-deciduous tropical forest of the Dominican Republic

Abstract:Despite being increasingly threatened by human-induced disturbances, dry forests remain the least studied and protected forest types in the Caribbean region. In contrast to many other forest systems in the world, we have little knowledge of the site-specific variation in vegetation communities within these forests nor understand how plant species distribution is determined by environmental variables, including geological attributes. Here, we aimed to provide evidence of the relationship between biodiversity and geodiversity, by assessing the associations between plant communities and habitat types in a semi-deciduous forest of the Dominican Republic. We collected vegetation data from 23 sites within the Ocoa river basin, which we classified into six groups with a Random Forest algorithm, using lithology, geomorphology, topography, and last decade history of forest loss as predictor variables. We established three main clusters: one group, which encompassed sites with forest over a limestone substrate, four groups of sites with forests over a marlstone substrate with varying degrees of steepness and forest loss history, and one group that gathered all sites with forest over an alluvial substrate. In order to measure the associations of plant communities with groups of sites, we used the indicator value index (IndVal), which indicates whether a plant species is found in one or multiple-habitat types and the phi coefficient of association, which measures species preferences for habitats. We found that 16 species of woody plants are significantly associated with groups of sites by means of their indices. Our findings suggest that the detection of plant species associations with our selection of environmental variables is possible using a combination of indices. We show that there is considerable variation in plant community composition within the semi-deciduous forest studied and suggest that conservation planning should focus on protection of this variation, while considering the significance and variability of geodiversity as well. In addition, we propose that our indicator groups facilitate vegetation mapping in nearby dry forests, where it is difficult to conduct thorough vegetation or environmental surveys. In short, our analyses hold potential for the development of site-specific management and protection measures for threatened semi-deciduous forests in the Caribbean.

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have a broad distribution and establish symbiotic relationships with vascular plants in tropical regions. They play a crucial role in enhancing plant nutrient absorption, mitigating pathogenic infections, and boosting the resilience of host plants to abiotic stresses, including drought under specific conditions. Many natural forests in Ethiopia are being replaced by monospecific plantations. However, the impact of these actions on AMF is unknown and, despite their ecological functions, AMF communities in various forest systems have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we assessed soil AMF communities in natural and plantation forests by DNA metabarcoding of the ITS2 rDNA region and assessed the influence of climate and environmental variables on the AMF community. In total, 193 AMF operational taxonomic units (OTUs), comprising nine families and 15 genera, were recorded. Glomerales was the dominant order (67.9 % of AMF OTUs) and Septoglomus fuscum , Diversispora insculpta , and Funneliformis mosseae were the dominant species. AMF were more abundant in natural forests than in plantation forests and the composition of AMF communities differed significantly from those of plantation forest. In plantation forests, soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus significantly influenced the composition of AMF communities, whereas in natural forest, electrical conductivity, annual rainfall, and cumulative rainfall before sample collection were significantly correlated with AMF. SIMPER analysis identified the AMF responsible for composition variances among different forest types, with the Glomeraceae family being the most significant contributor, accounting for nearly 60 % of the dissimilarity. Our findings further our understanding of the ecological niche function and the role of AMF in Ethiopia's natural forest systems and highlight the importance of prioritizing the sustainable development of degraded natural forests rather than plantations to ensure the preservation of habitats conducive to maintaining various AMF communities when devising conservation and management strategies.

Abstract:Dry Afromontane forests play a vital role in mitigating climate change by sequestering and storing carbon, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Despite previous research highlighting the importance of carbon stocks in these ecosystems, the influence of canopy cover and environmental factors on carbon storage in dry Afromontane forests has been barely assessed. This study addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the effects of environmental factors and vegetation cover on carbon stocks in Desa'a forest, a unique and threatened Afromontane dry forest ecosystem in northern Ethiopia. Data on woody vegetation, dead litter, grass biomass, and soil samples were collected from 57 plots. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05) to examine the influence of canopy cover and environmental factors on the carbon stocks of various pools.

The Topography Heterogeneity of Fagus Engleriana-Cyclobalanopsis Oxyodon Community in Shennongjia Region

Abstract:Micro-site heterogeneity was one of the important mechanisms of maintaining species diversity in plant community. Topography as a source of heterogeneity did not receive enough attention. In this paper, a terrain surface of 0.96 hm~2. was simulated using Data Elevation Model (DEM) to analysis how landform influences community structure in small scale.The research site was located in Shengnongjia area of Hubei Province (31°19′4″N, 110°29′44″E). This area is at transitional zone from middle to northern subtropics, and was one of biodiversity hotspots of China. A permanent forest plot was established in 2001, which was dominated by Fagus engleriana and Cyclobalanopsis oxyodon. Based on plot marks, topographic data were collected from 425 sample points. A DEM was built using interpolation method, and its precision was 0.4m in elevation. The slope and aspect driven from DEM showed strong heterogeneity. The slope varied from 18.2° to 74.6°, with aspects varied from south, to southwest and southeast. Semivariance analysis was used to measure the heterogeneity scale. The range and nugget variance of semivariograms of slope and aspect were 285.8, 280.5, 21.8, and 498, respectively. The high value of nugget variance indicated that the influence of topographic in the small scale could not be ignorant. The heterogeneity scale of the species composition was 6.10.Twenty four species were chosen to calculate correlation coefficient between slope, aspect and position. The topographic adaptation of these species was different, for example Fagus engleriana was positively associated with slope, and Sorbus alnifolia was positively associated with aspect and so on. According to their respect to topography, these species were classified into six groups using hierarchical cluster analysis. The variance scale of species was different strongly from that of topographic factors. This indicated that the topography was not the only factor influencing species distribution in the community. Seed distributions, inter-species and intra-species competition, the disturbance of tree-fall gap and other heterogeneity factors might all give the contribution to the community patterns. On the other hand, the high value of nugget variance of slope and aspect, and different adaptation of the species to the topography indicated that topography does influence on the patterns of plant community.

Abstract:Understanding how land use types embedded in agricultural landscapes support forest biodiversity is critical, especially during this period of continuing fragmentation and habitat losses in natural ecosystems. Here, we explored the floristic species composition with respect to land use types in the agroecosystem of west Oromia, Ethiopia. For this, a systematic sampling method was employed to collect floristic data from 122 main quadrats and 610 sub-quadrats, following transects laid out with a 1500-m interval. The main quadrats were arranged on transects with an 800-m interval to assess woody species, and five sub-quadrats (i.e., four at the corners and one at the center) were taken within each main plot to assess herbaceous plants. Accordingly, the floristics were assessed with respect to the identified five land use types, including crop land, forest, grazing land, home gardens, and riverine. We used a one-way ANOVA to test the difference in species diversity among the land use types. Adonis 2 and indval functions were used to describe the species composition and indicator species in relation to the land use types. Moreover, NMDS was applied to visualize the associations of the species composition with environmental variables in ordination space. A total of 285 plant species belonging to 220 genera and 89 families were recorded. Our results showed significant differences in species diversity, dissimilarity in species composition, and species indicator values among the land use types. These results indicate that the potentiality of the land use types in supporting plant diversity is significantly different; for example, species diversity and abundances were higher in grazing lands and home gardens when compared with other land use types. Overall, our findings suggest that conservation strategies in agricultural landscapes should take into account the differences in capacity for supporting biodiversity among land use types when planning.
Local Geomorphological Gradients and Land Use Patterns Play Key Role on the Soil Bacterial Community Diversity and Dynamics in the Highly Endemic Indigenous Afrotemperate Coastal Scarp Forest Biome

Abstract:Southern Afrotemperate forests are small multi-layered and highly fragmented biodiversity rich biomes that support unique flora and fauna endemism. However, little is known about the microbial community and their contribution to these ecosystems. In this study, high throughput sequencing analysis was used to investigate the soil bacterial community structure and function, and understand the effect of local topography/geomorphological formations and land use patterns on a coastal scarp forest. Soil samples were collected from three forest topography sites: upper (steeper gradients, 30–55°; open canopy cover, <30%), mid (less steep, 15–30°; continuous forest canopy, >80%), and lower (flatter gradient, <15°; open canopy cover, 20–65%), and from the adjacent sugarcane farms. Results indicated that forest soils were dominated by members of phyla Proteobacteria (mainly members of α-proteobacteria ), Actinobacteria , Acidobacteria , Firmicutes , and Planctomycetes , while Actinobacteria and to a lesser extent β-proteobacteria and γ-proteobacteria dominated SC soils. The core bacterial community clustered by habitat (forest vs. sugarcane farm) and differed significantly between the forest topography sites. The Rhizobiales (genera Variibacter , Bradyrhizobium , and unclassified Rhizobiales ) and Rhodospirallales (unclassified Rhodospirillum DA111) were more abundant in forest mid and lower topographies. Steeper forest topography (forest_upper) characterized by the highly leached sandy/stony acidic soils, low in organic nutrients (C and N) and plant densities correlated to significant reduction of bacterial diversity and richness, associating significantly with members of order Burkholderiales ( Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia , Delftia , and Massilia ) as the key indicator taxa. In contrast, changes in the total nitrogen (TN), soil organic matter (SOM), and high acidity (low pH) significantly influenced bacterial community structure in sugarcane farm soils, with genus Acidothermus ( Frankiales ) and uncultured Solirubrobacterales YNFP111 were the most abundant indicator taxa. Availability of soil nutrients (TN and SOM) was the strongest driver of metabolic functions related to C fixation and metabolism, N and S cycling; these processes being significantly abundant in forest than sugarcane farm soils. Overall, these results revealed that the local topographical/geomorphological gradients and sugarcane farming affect both soil characteristics and forest vegetation (canopy coverage), that indirectly drives the structure and composition of bacterial communities in scarp forest soils.

Abstract:Several studies have demonstrated that topography, as a proxy for resource availability, plays an important role in shaping tree species distribution patterns in tropical forests. Here we take a functional approach by assessing changes in plant functional traits along topographical gradients in a 20-ha forest dynamics plot in Xishuangbanna, southern Yunnan, China. We hypothesized that observed changes in trait composition and diversity along the topographic gradient should reflect tree life-history strategies linked to resource (water and nutrients) availability. We measured and compiled data of the maximum height, leaf area, seed mass and wood density of 334 tree species in 500 subplots (20 x 20 m). We found that species composition and diversity changed significantly along the topographical gradient. This change was accompanied by increasing community average seed mass and wood density, and decreasing leaf area and tree maximum height with higher elevations and steeper slopes. Higher slopes and ridges were being dominated by tree communities that, possibly due to environmental filtering, converged on a combination of traits characteristic of slow growth and low turn-over. Lower slopes and valleys, on the other hand, were dominated by tree communities that showed high trait evenness and divergence, and tree species characterized by traits indicative of fast growth and turn-over, i.e. competition for resources may be responsible for complementary trait combinations and resource use in this habitat type. Our study shows that functional traits can provide a mechanistic understanding of the processes shaping tropical tree community assembly along topographical gradients and supplements information obtained using species composition and diversity data. Some practical outcomes of our study include: (1) plant species compositional trends in tropical forests can be predicted with GIS technology, focusing on topographical gradients; (2) forest communities on ridges may become more dominant and expand in the future due to increasing drought severity; (3) a considerable number of tropical tree species may currently be under threat of local extinction due to topographically biased deforestation trends and (4) trait based survey approaches improve our understanding of the mechanisms behind species compositional trends.
