Abstract:Based on data from China's A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2021, this paper discusses the relationship between digital finance and enterprise innovation efficiency and the influencing mechanism. The findings show that digital finance significantly improves enterprise innovation efficiency, and compared with the depth of use, expanding the coverage of digital finance matters more in promoting enterprise innovation efficiency. For the transmission mechanism, digital finance helps enterprises achieve digital transformation and then promotes the improvement of enterprise innovation efficiency. Compared with non-state-owned enterprises, digital finance has a more obvious facilitation effect in improving the innovation efficiency of state-owned enterprises.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the impact of digital finance on corporate innovation based on Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2017. We find that digital finance has a significant promotion effect on corporate innovation. The development of digital finance promotes enterprise innovation, increasing the number of patent applications and authorizations. The development of digital finance mainly promotes corporate innovation through two channels. First, digital finance improves bank competition and credit availability to promote corporate innovation; second, digital finance reduces financing constraints and financing costs of enterprises to promote corporate innovation. We also conduct a rich set of robustness tests and obtain consistent conclusions.

Abstract:This paper uses the data of A-share strategic emerging enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2011 to 2018 to explore the impact of digital finance on the value of strategic emerging enterprises. It is found that the development of digital finance has a structural driving effect on the value of strategic emerging enterprises. It shows that the driving impact caused by the depth of use of digital finance is more evident than the coverage of digital finance. At the same time, it is more apparent in the low degree of marketization, nonstateowned enterprises, and central and western regions, highlighting the inclusive characteristics of digital finance. Mechanistic research shows that digital finance can enhance the value of strategic emerging enterprises through three paths: supplementary funds, reducing risk, and promoting innovation, thereby realizing a sustainable society. In particular, the impact of administrative mandatory environmental regulations on digital finance and the importance of strategic emerging enterprises presents an inverted U-shaped relationship.

Abstract:Under the background of the rapid development of digital economy, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of digital transformation on enterprise innovation and selects the panel data of China's Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2021 as the research objective is to study the impact of digital transformation on enterprise innovation from theoretical and empirical perspectives. First, we find that digital transformation accelerates enterprise innovation, a conclusion that has been validated through robustness testing. Second, digital transformation impacts enterprise innovation by enhancing productivity and information transparency. Third, financing constraints and financial redundancy play distinct regulatory roles in the process. Fourth, heterogeneity analysis finds that the role of digital transformation in promoting enterprise innovation has different effects in state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises, high-tech and non-high-tech enterprises, and enterprises with different life cycles. Finally, the functional analysis suggests that further investigation is needed to determine whether digital transformation can significantly promote the sustainable development of enterprises through innovation while also recognizing that this function may have a lag effect. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of digital transformation and innovation-driven practices and encourages more significant integration of the real and digital economies.

Abstract:Based on the data of China A-share listed enterprises, this paper examines the actual effect and mechanism of the development of digital finance on different innovation behaviors of enterprises, by using the panel data model and regression-based mediation analysis. It is found that the development of digital finance not only promotes the R&D investment of enterprises but also improves the quantity and quality of enterprise innovation output. The incentive effect of digital finance on enterprise R&D investment is stronger than that on innovation output, while the incentive effect of digital finance on enterprise breakthrough innovation is stronger than that of incremental innovation. Both the 'broadening' and the 'deepening' of digital finance have a significant positive effect on enterprise innovation, while the 'digitalization degree' of digital finance has no significant effect on enterprise innovation, and even may hinder the improvement of innovation quality. The incentive effect of digital finance on the innovation output of state-owned enterprises is reflected in 'quantity', while the incentive effect on innovation of non-state-owned enterprises is reflected in 'quality'. Digital finance can stimulate enterprise innovation by easing the financing constraints of enterprises, optimizing the government subsidy system, and improving the business environment.

Abstract:This paper empirically investigates the impact of digital finance on the breakthrough innovation of enterprises with a sample of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011 to 2022. It is found that digital finance can promote corporate breakthrough innovation, and presents certain structural heterogeneity characteristics. The mechanism test shows that digital finance has the dual attributes of a financing platform and a social platform, which can promote breakthrough innovation by alleviating corporate financing constraints and expanding corporate social networks. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the role of digital finance in promoting breakthrough innovation is characterized by regional heterogeneity, with digital finance playing a greater role in promoting breakthrough innovation in provinces with a low level of development of the banking sector, provinces with a high level of development of the capital market sector, and the central region. In addition, the degree of firms' external financing dependence and the degree of product market competition can strengthen the positive effect of digital finance on firms' breakthrough innovation. This paper enriches the related research on the impact of digital finance on enterprise innovation, and provides theoretical basis and policy insights on how digital finance can better assist the innovation-driven development strategy.

Abstract:This study empirically examines how digital M&A affects firm innovation using data from Chinese listed companies from 2006 to 2019. The results show that digital M&A promotes firm innovation, and our findings also suggest that digital M&A enables firms to break away from technology path-dependence to achieve radical innovation and digital innovation. The analysis of different types of digital M&A shows that the innovation effect of vertical digital M&A is smaller than that of horizontal digital M&A. Vertical digital M&A significantly increases industry concentration and may change the competitive structure of the market; the innovation effect of cross-border digital M&A is smaller than that of domestic digital M&A, which may be related to the negative moderating effect of cultural and institutional distance between China and the host country, as well as the restriction of cross-border data flow.

Abstract:Purpose The purposes of this paper are to analyze whether digital finance can contribute to enterprises' innovation performance and to determine the mediating effect of government subsidies. Design/methodology/approach This paper empirically examines the impacts of digital finance on enterprises' innovation performance by looking at Chinese companies listed on the SME and GEM boards from 2011 to 2018 to build an econometric model to test our hypotheses. The mediating effect of government subsidies, the moderating effect of financial constraints are examined, as well as shareholding of the largest shareholders in each selected company and the asset-liability ratio. Findings The results show that digital finance has a significant promotional effect on firms' innovation performance and that government subsidies play a partial mediating role in digital finance's contribution to firms' innovation performance. In addition, financial constraints and the shareholding of the largest shareholders in each selected company have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between government subsidies and firms' innovation performance. On the contrary, the asset-liability ratio is found to positively affect the relationship. Originality/value There has been limited research to date on the relationship between digital finance and firms' innovation performance, particularly with regard to the extent to which digital finance can influence innovation performance and the mechanisms for doing so. Therefore, it is of great significance to examine the relationship between digital finance and enterprises' innovation performance, which can also provide guidance for both the Chinese government and enterprises.

Abstract:Financial technology (fintech) has developed rapidly worldwide in recent years and is deemed an important driver for firms' innovation performance. Understanding the intricate relationship between fintech development and innovation activities is essential for promoting corporate innovation and value creation, particularly in the dynamic landscape of the digital economy. Therefore, this study delves into this significant issue within the specific context of China by employing panel regression techniques to analyze data from both Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies spanning the period 2011–2021. By doing so, it aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms through which fintech development influences innovation activities. Findings herein reveal a significantly positive impact of fintech on patent output, indicating a strong correlation between fintech development and corporate innovation. Additionally, the study emphasizes the role of fintech in fostering entrepreneurship by alleviating financial constraints that entrepreneurs often face. This in turn leads to a boost in their innovation activities, further highlighting the crucial role of fintech in promoting innovation within the corporate sector. The study also unveils that fintech has a particularly significant impact on innovation within private firms, manufacturing firms, and companies located in both the central and western regions of China. These findings thus suggest that the government should reduce and relax limits to stimulate the advancement and utilization of fintech, while entrepreneurs should make full use of the opportunities created by fintech to finance their innovative activities.

Abstract:The digital finance generated by technology empowerment profoundly affects the innovative behavior of micro-enterprises. To estimate how digital finance influences the quantity and quality of green technological innovation, this paper introduces digital finance into endogenous economic growth model and further conducts correlation analysis with the combination of fixed effects model (FE) and panel threshold model (PTM). Moreover, this paper investigates the action mechanism from the perspective of financial constraint and financial cost. The empirical results indicate that digital finance improves the quantity and quality of green technological innovation significantly. Compared with the coverage of digital finance and digital services, the impact of usage depth on green innovation accumulates dynamically superimposed in the long term. The digital finance contributes to correct the mismatch of financial resources and further induces inclusive green innovation in the dimension of ownership, growth cycle, and enterprise scale. Mechanism analysis shows that the relief of financial constraint, environmental information disclosure, and increase of R&D investment are the main paths for digital finance to drive green innovation. With the different thresholds, the dynamic evolution process of green innovation driven by digital finance is characterized by "first quantitative change and then qualitative change." This paper suggests that the integration of technological innovation and digital financial services needs to build an inclusive digital financial service system, cultivate diversified financial formats, and improve the market environment of digital financial services.

Abstract:As a new financial service mode integrating traditional finance and technology, digital finance has an important impact on the high-quality development of micro enterprises. Based on the relevant data of China's A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2019, this paper empirically tests the impact of digital finance on total factor productivity. The research finds that: (1) Digital finance is significantly positively correlated with total factor productivity of enterprises, that is, digital finance can improve total factor productivity of enterprises; (2) The mechanism test shows that the development of digital finance can effectively reduce the degree of financial mismatch and promote technological innovation of enterprises, so as to improve the total factor productivity of enterprises; (3) After analyzing the heterogeneity of individual characteristics of enterprises, it is found that when enterprises are under low government control, high financing constraints, and enterprises are high-tech enterprises, the role of digital finance in promoting total factor productivity of enterprises will be more significant. The research conclusion provides a certain reference basis for improving the quality and efficiency of financial services in the real economy, total factor productivity of enterprises and promoting the high-quality development of China's economy.

Abstract:Digital finance plays a very important role in promoting the high-quality development of the Chinese economy. This article empirically examines the impact of digital finance on firms’ technical efficiency by using the relevant data of Chinese digital creative listed companies from 2015 to 2020. The research findings indicate that digital finance has a significant positive influence on the technical efficiency of creative enterprises. The higher the level of digital finance development, the smaller the technical efficiency loss for the companies. Digital finance development not only reduces financial frictions and improves the financial mismatch of creative enterprises but also enhances innovation motivation by optimizing resource allocation. Therefore, accelerating the development of digital finance and expanding the scope of digital financial services can strengthen the positive incentive effect of digital finance on creative enterprises to improve technological efficiency, thus helping to promote the transformation of enterprises towards high-quality development.

Abstract:Using the data of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2020, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of digital finance development on enterprise independent innovation and the transmission mechanism of trade credit and government subsidies. The results show that the development of digital finance significantly promotes enterprise independent innovation, and trade credit and government subsidies play a mediating effect in the relationship between digital finance and enterprise independent innovation. And they also play a moderating role in the process of different dimensions of digital finance influencing enterprises' independent innovation. Finally, the heterogeneity analysis shows that the innovation incentive effect of digital finance is stronger for private enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Abstract:As the main driver of innovation, enterprises can effectively promote the level of social innovation. This paper incorporates digital inclusive finance into the research framework of innovation in Small and Medium-sized enterprises, and investigates the impact of digital inclusive finance on the innovation ability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises through theoretical and empirical analyses. The theoretical analysis finds that digital inclusive finance can compensate for the "long-tail effect" in the financing process and help enterprises obtain financing loans. In terms of empirical analysis, this paper has conducted empirical tests by selecting the innovation data of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2021, and the results show that: (1) Digital inclusive finance still has a facilitating effect on the technological innovation capability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises after the robustness test. (2)The mechanism evaluation finds that the digital inclusive finance segmentation indicators, i.e., the depth of use, the breadth of coverage and the degree of digitalization, are also important ways to enhance the technological innovation capability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises. (3)The innovative introduction of financial mismatch variables reveals that the financial mismatch problem in the financial market has a suppressive effect on the technological innovation capability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises. (4)Further analysis of the mediation effect of digital inclusive finance reveals that digital inclusive finance can effectively correct the financial mismatch problem in the traditional financial model and promote the technological innovation capability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises. This paper enriches the analysis of the economic effects of digital inclusive finance, while providing Chinese empirical support for digital inclusive finance to promote the innovation ability of Small and Medium-sized enterprises.

Abstract:Digital transformation has emerged as a powerful force in reshaping the business landscape and enabling organizations to enhance their capabilities. One critical aspect of this change is how it impacts an enterprise's innovation ability. To explore this question, we select data regarding China's A-share listed enterprises from 2007 to 2021 as the research sample. We employ crawler technology to gather keywords related to "digital transformation" from annual reports, portraying detailed journeys of enterprises' digital transformation. Through descriptive statistics and multiple covariance tests, a linear relationship is established between digital transformation and innovation ability. Benchmark regression is conducted and a robustness test is utilized to determine the robustness of the benchmark regression. The mechanism, heterogeneity, and moderating effects of this study are also tested. The results reveal that digital transformation makes a significant positive contribution to the innovation capability of enterprises. Meanwhile, among different types of enterprises, the impact of digital transformation on enterprise innovation capability shows heterogeneity. In terms of the impact mechanism, digital transformation can enhance the innovation output of enterprises by reducing the agency cost and improving the risk-taking level of enterprises, so as to further improve the innovation capability of enterprises. The research results of this paper provide essential theoretical support for the digital transformation of enterprises and the government's formulation of enterprises' digitalization strategies. More profoundly, it provides significant reference for how to further promote the digital transformation of Chinese enterprises.

Abstract:Based on the data of listed companies in Chinese A stock market between 2011 and 2020, This paper discusses the empirical analysis of digital finance on enterprise dual innovation by adopting the mediating effect model and threshold regression model, and estimates the mediation and threshold effects of absorptive capacity among them. Our study find that the development of digital finance exerts a significant positive effect on enterprise dual innovation. Compared with exploitative innovation, digital finance exhibits a greater promoting effect on exploratory innovation. Absorptive capacity displays a greater mediating effect between digital finance and exploratory innovation, and exploitative innovation reveals a significant positive effect on exploratory innovation. There is non-linear relationship between digital finance and corporate dual innovation, and the promotion effect shows a leaping growth pattern and significant threshold effect. The heterogeneity analysis from the perspective of property rights and enterprise size shows that the incentive effect of digital finance development on enterprises dual innovation is mainly reflected in non-state-owned enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises. This research expands the relevant theories of corporate innovation and digital finance, to provides empirical evidence for corporate decision-making.

Abstract:Digital finance (DF) has provided important financial support for the transformation and upgrading of China's manufacturing industry. Innovation is the engine of industrial upgrading. To solve the dilemma of developing the manufacturing industry, it is necessary to enhance independent innovation capabilities. On this basis, this article studies the impact of DF on manufacturing technology innovation (MTI). It uses the data of listed manufacturing firms in the Shenzhen and Shanghai A-share markets from 2011 to 2020 to establish a fixed-effects model and a panel-threshold model for empirical analysis. The results revealed that, first, DF significantly accelerates technological innovation in manufacturing enterprises and has a significant positive impact on technological innovation. Secondly, DF drives manufacturing enterprises' technological innovation by alleviating financial constraints (FCs). Thirdly, there is a dual-threshold effect based on market competition between DF and MTI based on market competition, and the promotion effect of DF on technology innovation decreases with the increasing degree of market competition. Finally, DF better enhances the technological innovation of non-state-owned manufacturing firms in the respective regions compared to state-owned firms. In terms of factor-intensive types, DF is more able to advance the innovative technologies of labor-intensive and capital-intensive enterprises, while it has no significant positive effect on technology-intensive enterprises. Policy implications are suggested to boost manufacturing technology innovation and aid future studies.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate the influence of digital transformation on the overall financial performance of firms, with a specific focus on Chinese-listed companies from 2010 to 2021. It seeks to understand the impacts on various accounting and financial indicators in emerging economies such as China. Design/methodology/approach This study employs a text-mining approach to construct a digital transformation index based on the data sample of 11,814 firm-year observations from China's A-share listed companies. This index serves as a proxy to measure the extent of digital transformation and its impact on financial performance and health. Findings The findings indicate that digital transformation significantly enhances overall financial performance and health, as evidenced by increased profitability, reduced operational costs, and lowered financial risks. The study reveals a time-lagged effect, where the benefits of digital transformation become more apparent after about one year. Further analysis shows that the value of digital transformation is more evident in a firm's asset items. This raises the possibility of recognising the by-product, such as data resources, in the digital transformation process. Originality/value This research offers a unique contribution by linking digital transformation to financial performance using a large dataset from China's A-share listed firms. Doing so enhances our understanding of the tangible effects of digital transformation on corporate performance. Furthermore, this research provides valuable insights for the advancement of future accounting practices and the development of standards.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, there has been a surge in digital innovation. China is the world’s second-largest digital economy entity and the national strategy to build a digital China is in full swing. Chinese enterprises have received great support while pursuing digital transformation. This study aims to explore the impact of digital transformation on firm dynamic capital structure adjustment by taking evidence from Chinese listed firms. Based on the data of 3855 Chinese A-share listed firm-year observations during 2011–2021, this study employed a panel data fixed effects model to ascertain the association between the proposed variables. The results indicate that digital transformation has a significant positive effect on accelerating capital structure adjustment speed. Furthermore, we show that digital transformation promotes dynamic capital structure adjustment through financial flexibility. The impact of digital transformation on dynamic capital structure adjustment is characterized by heterogeneity in the ownership type, asset size, and credit cycle. In addition, reduced financing constraints and growing economic policy uncertainty will moderate the relationship between digital transformation and dynamic capital structure adjustment. Our findings provide insights into how digital transformation is driving companies to accelerate their capital structure adjustment speed to the optimal, and supplements the existing literature on the determinants of dynamic capital structure adjustment.
