Abstract:This introduction provides an overview to this special issue honoring the work and legacy of Jeremy D. Safran. Born of the Jeremy Safran Memorial Conference, held on April 2nd, 2023, this issue features a wide range of contributions from leaders in the field, former students, and early career professionals whose work engages and develops central ideas from Safran's work and reflects on his impact on their own clinical work and scholarship. Themes center around the three domains of Safran's major contributions: pedagogy; psychotherapy integration; and Buddhism, spirituality, and psychoanalysis. We observe among the contributions an experiential reconnecting with the deeply relational commitments of our friend and colleague.

Abstract:In this duet of two voices honoring Jeremy Safran's legacy, the authors celebrate some points of resonance between Sándor Ferenczi's groundbreaking relational interventions and Safran's approach to the therapeutic relationship as the heart of healing. Karen Starr first highlights Ferenczi's now well-known creative experimentation with technique and his emphasis on and care for the relational dimension of psychoanalytic treatment. Jill Bresler then links Safran's career-long dedication to the therapeutic alliance to Starr's introductory remarks, honoring Safran and Ferenczi's shared dedication to expanding options in clinical practice through focus on the relationship. Recalling Safran's naming Ferenczi as a key figure in psychotherapy integration's origin story, Bresler reflects on her own learning from Safran's groundbreaking transtheoretical research into the mutative aspects of psychotherapy and his translating a psychoanalytic focus on the therapeutic relationship to CBT researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:Dr. Jeremy Safran had a unique talent to seamlessly weave together clinical work with his broad knowledge of philosophy, history, and theology. Alongside his commitment to researching the minutest clinical interactions, he was conscious of the broad values of the nature of the good life that underpinned his analytic approach. This paper will explore the concepts of the enchanted unconscious, clinical impasses, negotiation, and surrender, suggesting that these concepts together provide insight into Safran's larger philosophy of life. It will then provide the approach to these concepts of the Rebbes of Ishbitz/Radzin, a school of Polish Hasidic thought. It will conclude with an exploration of how both Safran's psychoanalytic approach and the Ishbitz/Radzin Rebbes' Hasidic approach to the Torah provide distinct insights and applications of these concepts, which can be mutually enriching for both disciplines.

Abstract:Purpose : The teaching personal and social responsibility model has been incorporated into out of school time programming globally, but there is limited research focused on how practitioners learn to use the model. Guided by occupational socialization theory, the authors used self-study to understand the experiences of a doctoral student as she developed and implemented a teaching personal and social responsibility-based program in an elementary after-school program. Method : Data were collected through reflective journaling and critical friend discussions. Results : Qualitative data analysis resulted in three turning points: (a) a planted seed needs light and rain, (b) an emerging bud with growing roots, and (c) rising in full bloom. High frustration was present at the start, but she grew to fully enjoy and utilize the model. Discussion/Conclusion : Self-study played a role in her ability to continue learning and growing. These findings reinforce the challenging but rewarding process of implementing novel instructional approaches.

Abstract:The authors describe a major program reform study of an early childhood teacher education program in a large, urban, state university in the United States. Over a 4-year period, our team of early childhood faculty undertook an intentional and reflective program reform study to better advocate for quality early childhood educational philosophy and practice, while ensuring our program aligned with the newer national accreditation policy and state teacher certification standards. In this article, we identify three core problems we encountered, articulate how we approached each of them based on our philosophical framework, and discuss further considerations of each.

Abstract:In this article, the authors provide an argument for future directions for teacher education, based on a re‐conceptualization of teaching. The authors argue that teacher educators need to attend to the clinical aspects of practice and experiment with how best to help novices develop skilled practice. Taking clinical practice seriously will require teacher educators to add pedagogies of enactment to an existing repertoire of pedagogies of reflection and investigation. In order to make this shift, the authors contend that teacher educators will need to undo a number of historical divisions that underlie the education of teachers. These include the curricular divide between foundations and methods courses, as well as the separation between the university and schools. Finally, the authors propose that teacher education be organized around a core set of practices in which knowledge, skill, and professional identity are developed in the process of learning to practice during professional education.

Abstract:This reflective, autoethnographic piece provides some insights into our involvement with a program that promotes a value-driven approach to community development work. As a ‘conversation’ between a lecturer and a graduate, or Educator of Informal Educators and Informal Educator, we discuss the process of teaching and learning about values within day-to-day community development practice. We emphasise that a value-driven approach enables informal educators to celebrate cultural diversity, which can be complex in community settings. As the educator of informal educators (Louise), I reflect on the need to explore and demonstrate what value-driven practice looks like in day-to-day practice within community work and not simply state that values are important. This was prompted by self-reflection and the realisation that my teaching failed to illuminate how to bring values to life in all aspects of community work to achieve anti-discriminatory, inclusive and empowering practice. As an informal educator (Matthew), I consider how community development theories and values translate into meaningful practice that celebrates cultural diversity. Reflections are influenced by theories from Paulo Freire, with a focus on his notion that ‘educators should respect the autonomy of the students and respect cultural identities’. An example of Freirean dialogue, the article discusses our critical consciousness through praxis as educator and informal educator. Acknowledging that we are never fully complete—we are always ‘becoming’—we hope the article will be of interest to both Educators of Informal Educators and Informal Educators alike.

Abstract:<span>This paper considers student teachers as reflective practitioners arguing that reflection processes can be established in university pre-service programmes, rather than the more widely acknowledged school practicum. Results from a small-scale study into micro-teaching sessions, where student teachers taught peers, indicate that 'teachers' and 'learners' benefitted from sharing knowledge, and from reflection afterwards, evaluating teaching and learning approaches and considering strategies for future practice. Increased confidence, teamwork and appreciation of practical considerations: organisation, planning and resources were all highlighted by students after the sessions. We conclude that stimulating reflection in the university setting through peer teaching offers a helpful perspective for teacher educators, so that during school practicum, students can interrogate their practice effectively, enhancing their pedagogy. We also raise questions about theory-informed practice and its role in reflection.</span>

Abstract:Reflecting on teaching is widely regarded as beneficial and has become a key component in teacher preparation programs. However, teacher educators can struggle to get teachers to engage in meaningful reflection, and teachers differ in their experiences with reflection. One lens for understanding differences in reflective experiences is that of adult development. Employing the constructive-developmental theory of adult development, this study investigated reflection on teaching experiences of seven novice Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teachers. Findings showed that teachers differed in their experiences depending on their different developmental perspectives. For example, some teachers valued written reflection on teaching as critical for reflection itself, while others experienced it as redundant. Implications for supporting meaningful reflection experiences among developmentally diverse novice teachers are discussed.

Abstract:Critical reflection and transformative action in a cyclical rhythm are the fundamental features of the process of praxis (Freire, P. [1970]. Pedagogy of the oppressed. Continuum). A self-study methodology was used to explore the lead researcher’s pedagogical experiences teaching at a youth development center (YDC) while utilizing praxis as critical reflection. Those pedagogical experiences included both teaching physical education to the students at the center, and instructing a cohort of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) students as they participated in a field experience there. The research question that guided this study was: how have the lead researcher’s pedagogical experiences at a YDC prompted praxis? Data were expanded upon in recorded interviews with an experienced colleague who probed and interviewed the lead researcher. Interview data were interpreted using qualitative methods. The findings of this study are derived from the lead researcher’s critical reflections and are organized into two major themes: (a) unexpected success prompting praxis: a vignette … and (b) praxis prompting pedagogy as an early teacher educator. The first theme describes the lead researcher’s initial experiences while teaching physical education at the YDC. The second theme outlines the lead researcher’s critical reflection and pedagogical experiences while teaching preservice teachers using the YDC as a context for a field experience. Lastly, the implications of his pedagogical experiences at the YDC are discussed.

Abstract:This article presents an exploratory and interpretative study on the development of self-reflection and self-knowledge in university teachers by an embodied experience. Dance Movement Therapy and Body–Mind Centering share the fundamentals of the paradigm of embodied cognition through a first-person full-body experience. Using these principles, a training program was designed and implemented in a cohort of 22 university teachers. The article offers details of the program and the adaptations necessary to carry it out in a higher-education context. The results of the qualitative analysis that was conducted suggested that the transformative learning paradigm could be useful to explain the process carried out by the participants. With the necessary limitations, the incorporation of awareness and attentive participation in bodily states and actions manifests as a transformative element in the teacher. The participants, despite initial resistance, see possibilities for applying this knowledge in their teaching practice.

Abstract:Purpose : Utilizing social constructivist learning theory and a conceptual framework for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), this self-study explores how I as a teacher-researcher intentionally evolved my approach to teaching SEL in a high school Physical Education setting. Method : Data were collected over twenty 75-min lessons over 15 weeks. One critical friend interview, 20 postteaching reflections, 18 observations, and 22 journal entries were conducted. A deductive and inductive approach utilizing the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana Framework for Qualitative Data Analysis was implemented. Results : Findings demonstrate how aligning my teaching with a contemporary framework led to a more explicit and intentional focus on SEL within my already utilized repertoire of pedagogies. Discussion/Conclusion : Incorporating self-study structure as a teacher-researcher led me to understand how I evolved and felt better equipped to teach for targeted SEL competencies and skills to further compliment the teaching of core Physical Education content.

Reflection before and after clinical practice-Enhancing and broadening experience through self-, peer- and teacher-guided learning

Abstract:Introduction: This paper explores a novel pedagogy surrounding students' clinical practice sessions. Before each clinical session, student clinical groups meet and each student presents their treatment planned for that session. The teachers question their understanding and explore "what-if" and other management scenarios. Peers in the clinical group observe the presentation and learning dialogue. After the clinical session, students gather on the clinic to debrief their performance with the tutor. Peers observe this dialogue, the shared clinical experience. This paper explores students' perceptions of reflection before action and reflection on action surrounding their clinical practice. Methods: Focus groups were conducted to explore this phenomenon and to create a questionnaire, which was administered to the whole class. Transcriptions of the focus groups and open-ended response in the questionnaire were subjected to a thematic analysis to identify emerging themes and supported by closed-ended question responses. Results: Briefing sessions before clinical sessions helped students identify problems and clear doubts before entering clinics. Students were able to recall and rehearse the clinical procedural knowledge and felt well prepared and confident for patient care. Student sharing of knowledge with peers provided a broader learning experience and helped gain confidence. Students also reported to learn from the teacher facilitating their preparation for the session. Debriefing sessions after the clinical session allowed reflection and learning including error correction on their own and peer experiences. Students learnt personally, from peers and from the teacher, and emphasised the importance of the student-teacher relation. Conclusions: Briefing and debriefing sessions were highly valued by students for preparation and learning on clinics and in learning from peers. Briefing sessions cleared misunderstanding, prevented errors, broadened procedural knowledge and improved both confidence and clinical experience. Debriefing sessions facilitated reflective practice, error correction and prevention, and helped gain insights from teachers' own experience and perspectives.

Abstract:Despite growing recognition that systemic family therapists need to be adept at personal reflection and managing the therapeutic relationship, little research has explored the effects of training beyond the development of skills. This article provides a report on a qualitative study focussed on the personal effects of family therapy training, with particular reference to the aspects of training that foster personal reflection and growth. Twenty three trainees from three training institutions were interviewed, utilizing the practices of grounded theory. Trainees reported a deepening relational awareness, which applied to both personal and professional domains and included shifts in perspectives on relationships with loved ones. Five aspects of training were identified as responsible: (1) personally challenging experiences with clients; (2) supervisors who live the paradigm; (3) the demystification of theory; (4) a safe supervisory space; and (5) the development of trusting peer relationships. Interns also described, in turn, how their personal development affected their clinical work, particularly in the development of compassion and empathy. This study serves to highlight training practices that support reflective practice in systemic family therapy.

Abstract:This article (a) explores the experience of an early childhood teacher researcher as she intentionally uses interactive read‐alouds to promote social justice and to encourage critical consciousness in her preschool classroom and (b) offers guidance for educators to embark on their own social justice journey. Over the course of a 2‐year study, the teacher engaged the children with 12 books. Findings describe the personal and professional evolution of the teacher researcher as social justice became her "way of being." As she studied and reflected on issues of oppression and equity, and considered her own classroom read‐alouds, she shifted her approach from centering social–emotional learning to social justice. This shift was marked by changes in book selection and presentation and by two key turning points. Findings also detail the roles the teacher adopted as she explored books with her students and illustrate how these roles supported and prompted social justice. Self‐reflection points and steps are included to support educators in teaching for social justice.

Abstract:Background: Faculty development programs in health professional education traditionally emphasise theories, principles, and effective teaching practices. However, the efficacy of these strategies in instigating meaningful changes in instructional practices has come under scrutiny. Methods: This qualitative research aims to enhance our understanding and support of educators' ongoing learning and growth. Employing a transformative learning lens, the study explored the experiences, professional development practices, and responsibilities of clinical educators who participated in a faculty development course. Utilising Mezirow's transformative learning theory as a framework, this research investigated the transformative journey of educators, analysing reflective pieces from 144 participants. Results: The study findings revealed shifts in pedagogical approaches, ranging from the recognition of a haphazard teaching style to the intentional integration of evidence-based methods and pedagogical philosophies. The thematic analysis identified key stages in the transformative process, illuminating educators' commitment to structured teaching, self-directed learning, and continuous improvement. Conclusion: This research has contributed valuable insights into how faculty development programs can stimulate reflective practices and transformative learning in health professional education. The article argues for the centrality of transformative learning processes in faculty development, presenting an intriguing perspective on sustainable and impactful professional growth. Trends across learning experiences are presented, accompanied by practical recommendations. The implications of the research for clinical educators, administrators, and developers of formal faculty professional development programs are also discussed.
