Chasing Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Greatness

Abstract:Sir: We had the great pleasure of reading the extremely interesting letter by Roger K. Khouri, Jr., entitled “Chasing Greatness” published in the February 2015 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.1 We congratulate the author for his meaningful narration of the modern struggle toward greatness, immortality, and fame of health care professionals working in the medical and surgical world. Competition among students and later among physicians is necessary because it leads the scientific community to never give up and to excel. When we are students, our masters teach us that science is meant to be shared, and that ideas are supposed to be kicked around among scholars to gain different perspectives and different input. However, being a competition, science soon in our career shows also its dark side, especially when scientific discoveries and their data are kept secret for business reasons until they are published and presented. The world of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is not immune to the same struggle for survival and glory as already pointed out by Khouri.1 We completely agree with the author, who indicated the obsessive pursuit of an ever-evasive greatness as the main inability to leave ourselves time or emotional energy to enjoy the ride, to learn with a deep curiosity, to research with a hope of improving future treatments, to cry with a suffering patient, or to rejoice with a recovering patient.1 A yearning for greatness is not only necessary for success, it is also something functional that pushes us to perform the same operation hundreds of times or the same surgical gesture thousands of times in a year. The boundaries of personal glorification and surgical perfection are very subtle, especially in modern times, in which patients do not accept any small mistake any longer and in which physicians too many times need to deal with numerous medical litigations. An example taken from history may be useful in this context. The Renaissance period has been enlightened by several artists. There is no doubt that Michelangelo Buonarroti was one of the greatest artists of all time. After five centuries, the mastery of Michelangelo in the representation of the sublime beauty expressing the full breadth of the human condition is still unmatched. The artist, also known as "the Divine," revolutionized the concept of sculpture and arranging his artistic and architectural creations around the human body, championing Protagoras’ motto “Man is the measure of all things” (Plato’s Theaetetus, 152a). Living to nearly 89 years, he had an extremely prolific life, with a huge creative output that spanned many disciplines because of his continuous motivation to work on his magnificent marble sculptures, frescoes, and paintings and to increase his knowledge of anatomy. Indeed, despite the debilitating effects of his several diseases, Michelangelo created one masterpiece after another, “hammering” his last sculpture up to 6 days before he died (February 18, 1564). During his life, Michelangelo was already considered the most skilled and ingenious artist who ever lived. He was only 25 years old when he presented to the world the first of his Pietà and 30 when he finished his David. If he would have stopped to enjoy his successes, most probably we could not appreciate now The Last Judgment depicted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, completed when he was over 60 years old. Indeed, near the end of his life, Michelangelo warned that “No one has mastery/Before he is at the end/Of his art and his life,”2 and Michelangelo’s art at the end of his life most probably reached the sense of mastery that he used to pursue. The untiring search for perfection in his art, the passion with which Michelangelo devoted his life to his work, and his never-ending pursuit of a personal glorification2 should be worthy examples of how sometimes progress and excellence require individuals with a yearning for greatness. We should accept that our obsession with immortality is inherent in the human condition, even if as physicians we should be competing against diseases, health disparities, and gaps in our biomedical knowledge as Roger K.
