Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have so far been highlighted for their potential roles in catalysis, gas storage and separation. However, the realization of high electrical conductivity (>10−3 S cm−1) and magnetic ordering in MOFs will afford them new functions for spintronics, which remains relatively unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a two-dimensional MOF by solvothermal methods using perthiolated coronene as a ligand and planar iron-bis(dithiolene) as linkages enabling a full π-d conjugation. This 2D MOF exhibits a high electrical conductivity of ~10 S cm−1 at 300 K, which decreases upon cooling, suggesting a typical semiconductor nature. Magnetization and 57Fe Mössbauer experiments reveal the evolution of ferromagnetism within nanoscale magnetic clusters below 20 K, thus evidencing exchange interactions between the intermediate spin S = 3/2 iron(III) centers via the delocalized π electrons. Our results illustrate that conjugated 2D MOFs have potential as ferromagnetic semiconductors for application in spintronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a kagome lattice can exhibit strong electron-electron interactions, which can lead to tunable quantum phases including many exotic magnetic phases. While technological developments of 2D MOFs typically take advantage of substrates for growth, support, and electrical contacts, investigations often ignore substrates and their dramatic influence on electronic properties. Here, we show how substrates alter the correlated magnetic phases in kagome MOFs using systematic density functional theory and mean-field Hubbard calculations. We demonstrate that MOF-substrate coupling, MOF-substrate charge transfer, strain, and external electric fields are key variables, activating and deactivating magnetic phases in these materials. While we consider the example of kagome-arranged 9,10-dicyanoanthracene molecules coordinated with copper atoms, our findings should generalise to any 2D kagome material. This work offers useful predictions for tunable interaction-induced magnetism in surface-supported 2D (metal-)organic materials, opening the door to solid-state electronic and spintronic technologies based on such systems.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable but challenging due to the weak superexchange interaction between metal atoms. For this purpose, strengthening the hybridization between metal ion and organic linkage presents an experiment-feasible chemical solution to enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we report three 2D Cr(II) aromatic heterocyclic MOF magnets with enhanced Curie temperature by bridging Cr(II) ions with pyrazine, 1,4-diphosphinine, and 1,4-diarsenin linkers, i.e., Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2, and using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2 are ferrimagnetic semiconductors. In particular, the Curie temperature of Cr(pyz)2 is estimated to be about 344 K and could be enhanced to 512 and 437 K in Cr(diphos)2 and Cr(diarse)2 by strengthening the hybridization between Cr ions and organic linkers via d-π* direct exchange interaction. This study presents a prototype to obtain room-temperature magnetism in 2D Cr(II)-based MOF magnets for nanoscale spintronics applications.

Abstract:Supramolecular isomerism has been recognized as an effective strategy for manipulating structures and properties, particularly in metal-hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs). However, it has been less studied in the context of magnetic dynamics. In this study, we reinvestigated two previously reported cobalt(II) HOFs, {[(H2O)(2)Co(Hbic)(2)]sol}(n) (H(2)bic = 1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid; 1, Sol = 2DMF1.5H(2)O; 2, Sol = H2O), which exhibit unique supramolecular isomerism. In both complexes, octahedral Co(II) ions are connected by deprotonated Hbic-ligands to form one-dimensional chains, which are then sustained into three-dimensional frameworks by prominent N-HO hydrogen-bonding interactions. This results in significantly different porosities and N-2-adsorption abilities: a high solvent-accessible void of 46.2% for the desolvated phase of 1, compared to only 2.3% for that of 2, likely due to the additional pi-pi stacking interactions. Interestingly, our magnetic studies revealed that both 1 and 2 exhibit typical single ion magnet behaviors, with alternating relaxation dynamics (Raman, direct, and QTM for 1; Raman and direct for 2). These findings demonstrate that the structures, stability, porosities, and magnetic properties of MHOF materials can be effectively tuned through a supramolecular isomerization approach.
Proximity‐Coupling‐Induced Significant Enhancement of Coercive Field and Curie Temperature in 2D van der Waals Heterostructures

Abstract:Magnetism in 2D has long been the focus of condensed matter physics due to its important applications in spintronic devices. A particularly promising aspect of 2D magnetism is the ability to fabricate 2D heterostructures with engineered optical, electrical, and quantum properties. Recently, the discovery of intrinsic ferromagnetisms in atomic thick materials has provided a new platform for investigations of fundamental magnetic physics. In contrast to 2D CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6 insulators, itinerant ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 (FGT), which has a larger intrinsic perpendicular anisotropy, higher Curie temperature (TC), and relatively better stability, is a promising candidate for achieving permanent room‐temperature ferromagnetism through interface or component engineering. Here, it is shown that the ferromagnetic properties of FGT thin flakes can be modulated through coupling with a FePS3. The magneto‐optical Kerr effect results show that the TC of FGT is improved by more than 30 K and that the coercive field is increased by ≈100% due to the proximity coupling effect, which changes the spin textures of FGT at the interface. This work reveals that antiferromagnet/ferromagnet coupling is a promising way to engineer the magnetic properties of itinerant 2D ferromagnets, which paves the way for applications in advanced magnetic spintronic and memory devices.

Modulating the Architectures of Cobalt Metal–Organic Frameworks to Fine-tune Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behaviors

Abstract:By utilizing two similar tetrapyridine ligands, tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene)methane (L1) and tetrakis(3-pyridyloxymethylene)methane (L2), four distinct metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with formulas [Co(NCS)2(L1)]·CH3OH (HUST-13, HUST = Huazhong University of Science and Technology), [Co(NCS)2(L1)] (HUST-14), [Co(NCS)2(L2)]·2(CH3OH) (HUST-15), and [Co(NCS)2(L2)] (HUST-16), have been successfully constructed by adjusting the reaction solvents. After structural characterization, four Co-MOFs exhibit versatile topological structures and a single cobalt node with octahedron configuration. The synergistic effect between the steric configuration of ligands and the structural director of solvent molecules must be responsible for the generation of the distinct topological structures. Magnetic studies reveal the presentation of different slow magnetic relaxation phenomena in these Co-MOFs, which should be ascribed to the different orientations of the magnetic anisotropic axis of cobalt ions in the corresponding frameworks. Chern insulators and high Curie temperature Dirac half-metal in two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with nontrivial topological states have drawn considerable attention recently. Among them, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are standing out due to their advantages, such as the easy synthesis in practice and less sensitivity to oxidation that are distinctly different from inorganic materials. By means of density-functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the electronic and topological properties of a class of 2D MOFs X(C21H15N3) (X = transition metal element from 3d to 5d). Excitingly, we find that X(C21H15N3) (X = Ti, Zr, Ag, Au) are Chern insulators with sizable band gaps (~7.1 meV). By studying a four-band effective model, it is revealed that the Chern insulator phase in X(C21H15N3) (X = Ti, Zr, Ag, Au) is caused cooperatively by the band inversion of the p orbitals of the C21H15N3 molecule and the intrinsic ferromagnetism of X(C21H15N3). Additionally, Mn(C21H15N3) is a Dirac half-metal ferromagnet with a high Curie temperature up to 156 K. Our work demonstrates that 2D MOFs X(C21H15N3) are good platforms for realizing Quantum anomalous Hall effect and designing novel spintronic devices based on half-metals with high-speed and long-distance spin transport.

Two-Dimensional Multifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks with Simultaneous Ferro-/Ferrimagnetism and Vertical Ferroelectricity.

Abstract:Exploring 2D multifunctional materials with intrinsic ferro-/ferrimagnetism and vertical ferroelectricity is a highly desirable but challenging task. Here, motivated by the recently synthesized organometallic frameworks K3Fe2[PcFeO8], we propose to realize such materials in a series of 2D K3M2[PcMO8] (M = Cr-Co) nanosheets. First-principles calculations suggest 2D K3Cr2[PcCrO8] as a ferromagnetic half metal with a Curie temperature of 140 K, whereas others (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) are all ferrimagnetic semiconductors with the Curie temperatures between 66 and 150 K. Moreover, the structural distortion due to the out-of-plane K+ counterions leads to a significant vertical electric polarization. The estimated intensity of polarization for K3Fe2[PcFeO8] is 143 pC/m, with the ferroelectric phase-transition barrier being 0.38 eV per formula. This work highlights the potential of 2D organometallic frameworks such as K3M2[PcMO8] as a versatile platform for designing multifunctional materials with simultaneous ferro-/ferrimagnetism and vertical ferroelectricity.

Abstract:Finding new two-dimensional (2D) materials with novel quantum properties is highly desirable for technological innovations. In this work, we studied a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal cores and discovered various attractive properties, such as room-temperature magnetic ordering, strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, huge topological band gap (>200meV), and excellent spin-filtering performance. As many MOFs have been successfully synthesized in experiments, our results suggest realistic new 2D functional materials for the design of spintronic nanodevices.
Room-temperature ferrimagnetism and size-modulated electronic structures in two-dimensional cluster-based metal-organic frameworks

Abstract:Cluster-assembled materials have attracted particular attention for their complex hierarchical structures and unique properties. However, the majority of cluster-based assemblies developed so far are either non-magnetic or only exhibit magnetic ordering with a relatively low Curie temperature, limiting their applications in spintronics. Thus, two-dimensional (2D) cluster-assembled materials with room-temperature magnetism remain highly desirable. For this purpose, based on first principles calculations, we design a series of thermodynamically stable 2D cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) Fe n -(pyz) ( n =1–6) by utilizing Fe n metal clusters as nodes and nitrogen-containing pyrazine ligands as organic linkers. These 2D cluster-based MOFs exhibit robust ferrimagnetic ordering due to the strong d–p direct exchange interaction between d-electron spin of Fe n ( n =1–6) clusters and charge transfer-induced p -electron spin of pyrazine ligands. In particular, the ferrimagnetic Curie temperatures are well above room temperature (up to 836 K). Additionally, altering the size of Fe n clusters in Fe n -(pyz) ( n =1–6) MOFs results in diverse functional spintronic properties, including bipolar magnetic semiconductors, half semiconductors and Dirac half metals. Moreover, these 2D assembled MOFs possess sizable magnetic anisotropy energies, up to 9.16 meV per formula.

Field-induced Single-Ion Magnet Behavior in a Cobalt(ii) Coordination Polymer Constructed by a Mixed Bipyridyl-Tetracarboxylate Strategy

Abstract:A porous two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Co(H(2)tbca)(bpb)(H2O)(2)]center dot bpb}(n) (H(4)tbca = 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid; bpb = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the monometallic Co2+ ion acted as coordination nodes in a distorted octahedral geometry and bridged by H(2)tbca(2-) and bpb ligands, giving rise to a porous 2D sql network. Thermal analysis reveals high thermal stability of the framework material even losing its guest molecules. Magnetic studies showed that the six-coordinated Co2+ ions exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 62.1 cm(-1). For the presence of significant single-ion magnetic anisotropy, single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior through combined Direct and Raman mechanisms was evidenced with the effective energy U-eff = 31.8 cm(-1). The forgoing result provides a new 2D cobalt (II) SIM-MOF and a potential bipyridyl-tetracarboxylate approach for the construction of SIM frameworks.

Abstract:The magnetic structure adopted by a material relies on symmetry, the hierarchy of exchange interactions between magnetic ions and local anisotropy. A direct pathway to control the magnetic interactions is to enforce dimensionality within the material, from zero-dimensional isolated magnetic ions, one-dimensional (1D) spin-chains, two-dimensional (2D) layers to three-dimensional (3D) order. Being able to design a material with a specific dimensionality for the phenomena of interest is non-trivial. While many advances have been made in the area of inorganic magnetic materials, organic compounds offer distinct and potentially more fertile ground for material design. In particular magnetic metal–organic frameworks (mMOFs) combine magnetism with non-magnetic property functionality on the organic linkers within the structural framework, which can further be tuned with mild perturbations of pressure and field to induce phase transitions. Here, it is examined how neutron scattering measurements on mMOFs can be used to directly determine the magnetic structure when the magnetic ions are in a 2D layered environment within the wider 3D crystalline framework. The hydrated formate, in deuterated form, Co(DCOO)2·2D2O, which was one of the first magnetic MOFs to be investigated with neutron diffraction, is reinvestigated as an exemplar case.

Abstract:Here, we report the in situ formation of two novel metal organic frameworks based on copper and cobalt using tetrazole-5-carboxylate ethyl ester as the ligand synthesized by a hydrothermal route. Both MOFs show isostructural three-dimensional networks with kagome ' tilling topology and show high chemical stability. Despite the iso-structural nature, both systems show distinct magnetic features. For the Cu-based kag-MOF system, the co-existence of energetically competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions resulted in the establishment of a long-range ferromagnetic order sustainable up to 52 K. On the contrary, dominant antiferromagnetic interactions identified in the Co-based MOF material were responsible for an antiferromagnetic order evolving below 7 K. Importantly, chemically different metallic ions gave rise to distinct magnetic ordering with different strength and temperature-sustainability. No dynamic magnetic phenomena were observed, implying that the concentration of the metal ions within the structure exceeded the percolation limit favoring the formation of the long-range magnetic order in the studied systems. Both designed kagome ' -type MOFs were thus found to show a coexistence of high frustration and long range magnetic ordering with limited orbital quenching, resulting from the choice of the ligands and crystal arrangement. Thus, the results demonstrated the potentiality to effectively control and alter the magnetic features within the particular kagome ' -type MOF lattice due to the chemical nature and structural incorporation of individual metal ions. The presented approach offers a promising strategy to further fine tune the physical characteristics of the MOF-based systems equipping them with more competitive potential and extending their application portfolio to other fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials play an important role in coordination chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of a Co(II)-based MOF [Co-(dps)2Cl2]n (1). Single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 has a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. The magnetic properties studies indicate that compound 1 shows easy-plane anisotropy with positive D value, which is further proved by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR). AC susceptibility measurements show that compound 1 is field-induced SMM governed by single Co(II) ion. The magnetic properties studies indicate that coordinate halogens have almost no effect on the slow magnetic relaxation time and effective energy barrier. However, the secondary coordination environment of packing pattern has a significant effect on the slow relaxation.
Tunable magnetism of Boron Imidazolate-based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MMOFs), where magnetic metal nodes are connected into a crystal structure by organic linkers, have a potential to host exotic magnetic states. We present a study of bulk magnetic properties of four metal-organic frameworks with the same boron imidazolate linkers, Cu-BIF, Co-BIF, Ni-BIF, and newly synthesized Zn-BIF, displaying a variety of lattice structures and nontrivial magnetic behaviors. While non-magnetic Zn-BIF provides an offset of magnetic response, magnetic susceptibility measurements of the other three magnetic materials demonstrate the presence of weak magnetic interactions in these MOFs, which differ between materials by sign and size. Cu-BIF, where magnetic nodes are connected into octahedral cages, shows simple paramagnetic behavior. Triangular lattice Co-MOF shows antiferromagnetic interactions on the order of 1 K, and a spin-crossover-like effect in magnetic susceptibility due to thermal depopulation of excited crystal electric field levels. Magnetic properties of Ni-BIF suggest sizable ferromagnetic interactions. Using DC/AC susceptibility and variable-field DC magnetization, we detect cluster spin-glass behavior and discuss possible microscopic origins of this behavior. This work demonstrates the variety of magnetic properties that are possible with a single organic ligand, and establishes the low energy scale of magnetic interactions through superexchange in boron imidazolate frameworks.

Paramagnetic Conducting Metal–Organic Frameworks with Three‐Dimensional Structure

Abstract:Abstract3D well‐crystallized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), M‐THBQ (M=Fe, Co, Mn, THBQ=tetrahydroxybenzoquinone), are synthesized and characterized. Their structures are determined as cubic cell in the group of Pm from powder X‐ray diffraction data, and their properties of electronic, magnetic and spectroscopic are also investigated. They are all semiconductors, and Fe‐THBQ exhibits the air‐stable n‐type thermoelectric characteristic as its Seebeck coefficient reaches −130 μV K−1, and the electrical conductivity is 2.7×10−4 S cm−1 at 300 K. Additional, M‐THBQ are paramagnetic, and the value of Weiss constant of Fe‐THBQ is −219.37 K, indicating the existence of robust intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchanges. Meanwhile, they display strong absorption bands in the range of 220 to 1000 nm, suggest M‐THBQ could have the potential to become photoabsorbers, and Fe‐THBQ exhibits a narrow band gap of 0.63 eV according to the ultraviolet absorption edge spectrum.

Abstract:With adequate building blocks, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can combine magnetic ordering and porosity. This makes MOFs a promising platform for the development of stimuli-responsive materials that show drastically different magnetic properties depending on the presence or absence of guest molecules within their pores. Here we report a CO2-responsive magnetic MOF that converts from ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic on CO2 adsorption, and returns to the ferrimagnetic state on CO2 desorption. The ferrimagnetic material is a layered MOF with a [D+–A−–D] formula, produced from the reaction of trifluorobenzoate-bridged paddlewheel-type diruthenium(ii) clusters as the electron donor (D) with diethoxytetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor (A). On CO2 uptake, it undergoes an in-plane electron transfer and a structural transition to adopt a [D–A–D] paramagnetic form. This magnetic phase change, and the accompanying modifications to the electronic conductivity and permittivity of the MOF, are electronically stabilized by the guest CO2 molecules accommodated in the framework.

Abstract:Heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allow the precise placement of various metals at atomic precision within a porous framework. This new level of control by MOFs promises fascinating advances in basic science and application. However, the rational design and synthesis of heterometallic MOFs remains a challenge due to the complexity of the heterometallic systems. Herein, we show that bimetallic MOFs with MX2 (INA)4 moieties (INA=isonicotinate; M=Co2+ or Fe2+ ; X=OH- , Cl- , Br- , I- , NCS- , or NCSe- ) can be generated by the sequential modification of a Zr-based MOF. This multi-step modification not only replaced the linear organic linker with a square planar MX2 (INA)4 unit, but also altered the symmetry, unit cell, and topology of the parent structure. Single-crystal to single-crystal transformation is realized so that snapshots for transition process were captured by successive single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the installation of Co(NCS)2 (INA)4 endows field-induced slow magnetic relaxation property to the diamagnetic Zr-MOF.
