Abstract:High-performance, cost-efficient electrolyte systems are sought after for high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries. However, the expensive precursor and complex synthesis process hinders exploration of cathode electrode/electrolyte interfaces and solvation structures. Here we developed a universal cation replacement method to prepare low-cost, high-reversibility magnesium and calcium electrolytes derived from a zinc organoborate solvation structure. By rationally adjusting the precursor chain length and F-substitution degree, we can fine tune anion participation in the primary solvation shell. A completely dissociated Mg organoborate electrolyte enables high current endurance and enhanced electrochemical kinetics, whereas the Ca organoborate electrolyte with strong coordination/B–H inclusion offers a stable solid–electrolyte interphase with high coulombic efficiency. A rechargeable 53.4 Wh kg −1 Mg metal prototype is achieved with a 30 μm Mg anode, a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S = 5.58 μl mg −1 ) and a modified separator/interlayer. This work provides innovative strategies for reversible electrolyte systems and high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries.
High Performance Hybrid Mg-Li Ion Batteries with Conversion Cathodes for Low Cost Energy Storage

Abstract:The recently proposed hybrid Mg-Li ion battery technology delivers good reaction kinetics and excellent safety features because it integrates the advantages of the Mg metal anode and the Li+ ion intercalation/conversion electrodes. The inexpensive and resource-abundant FeS is a suitable candidate as a cathode material due to its medium redox potential and high theoretical capacity; however, a conventional FeS cathode suffers from low electronic conductivity, low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Here, in this work, to overcome these drawbacks, a free-standing membrane electrode with FeS nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers was designed and prepared via a facile electrospinning method. Additionally, because of the absence of inactive materials, such as the current collector and binder, the energy density was enhanced compared with that in the conventional batteries. The hybrid Mg-Li ion battery fabricated in this study can deliver a maximum energy density of similar to 300Wh kg(-1), which is superior to that of most conventional Mg ion batteries. An outstanding cyclic performance for up to 800 cycles with high coulombic efficiencies above 97% was demonstrated, and a specific capacity above 200mAh g(-1) was retained with a current density of 257mA g(-1). Abstract:Rechargeable Mg batteries with the merits of low cost, high safety and environmental compatibility are deemed as promising energy storage techniques for large-scale applications. However, the actual development of rechargeable Mg batteries is constantly hindered by the difficulty of finding suitable electrode materials to accommodate Mg 2+ . Cu 2-x Se has exceptionally high electrical conductivity and its unique crystal structure could be better compatible with Mg 2+ cations. Herein, a novel Cu 2-x Se hollow nanocube with extraordinarily high conductivity and unique structure was designed and synthesized by facile one-step template-directed selenation reaction methods. The excellent Mg electrochemical performance of Cu 2-x Se hollow nanocube cathodes was demonstrated based on rechargeable Mg batteries. The Cu 2-x Se NCs provide a high specific capacity of 232.5 mAh g - 1 at 100 mA g - 1 , superior cycling stability over 3700 cycles, and an excellent rate capacity of 163.1 mAh g - 1 at 3000 mA g - 1 . Furthermore, the two-step magnesiation/demagnesiation processes of the Cu 2-x Se NC cathodes were revealed, and the accelerating effects of the fast Mg 2+ diffusion in the unique hierarchical structure on magnesium storage performance were analyzed. The outcomes of this study not only provide simple methods for fabricating high-performance Cu 2-x Se cathodes but also propose valuable insights for exploring conversion-type Mg-storage materials.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are appealing alternatives for energy storage systems based on the high theoretical capacity, low price and high security of the Mg metal anode. Nevertheless, the shortage of high‐performance cathode materials severely obstructs its development. As an important conversion material, transition metal selenides, with desirable theoretical capacity and weak bond energy (Mg‐Se), have attracted more attention in recent years. In this study, CuFeSe2 (CFS) nanoparticles were produced by a hydrothermal approach and its feasibility as a cathode material for RMBs was further investigated. Given the synergistic effect between Cu and Fe, the optimized CFS shows a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1, outstanding long‐term cyclability (86 mAh g–1 at 1A g–1 after 600 cycles), and prominent rate capability (85 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1). Density functional theory (DFT) computations conclude CFS exhibits a suitable migration barrier for Mg2+ along the tunnel of 0.92 eV. An in‐depth investigation of the mechanism demonstrates that the Mg storage process can be divided into solid solution reaction and the conversion processes by ex‐situ techniques. This work contributes to further investigate the Mg2+ storage mechanism of cathode materials for RMBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are cost-effective and dendrite-free, making them desirable for large-scale applications. Nevertheless, the exploration of high-performance cathodes still remains a great challenge in magnesium battery research. Herein, the CoSe porous polyhedra induced by Te heteroatoms (CoSe/Te) are successfully prepared by two-step metal-organic framework (MOF)-template assisted method and investigated as high-efficiency cathodes for rechargeable MIBs. In this regard, the affluent porous structure can facilitate the transport of Mg2+ ions while the introduction of Te heteroatoms can reduce the conversion reaction barrier, boost the kinetics and redox reversibility and excite the electron conduction to build active nanostructured domains for highly reversible Mg storage reactions. As a consequence, the CoSe/Te maintains the high specific capacity of 150.6 mAh g−1 after 600 cycles at 200 mA g−1, with a superior capacity retention rate of 75.3%. Moreover, the specific capacity of such electrode materials changed from 260 mAh g−1 to 41 mAh g−1 when the current density increased from 100 mA g−1 to 2000 mA g−1, and gradually recovered to 256.5 mAh g−1 when the current density returned to 100 mAh g−1, exhibiting a better rate performance. This work highlights how micro-nanostructures can favor magnesium storage reaction reversibility and cyclability and also provide insights into rational electrode design for storing magnesium cations in future studies.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) based on metal Mg anodes have shown great potential owing to the abundant natural resources, high volumetric capacity, and low safety hazard. Nevertheless, the development of RMBs is hampered by the sluggish kinetics of Mg2+ diffusion and the limited cyclability of cathode materials. Herein, nonstoichiometric copper selenide (Cu2–xSe) are synthesized via a solution‐based method and exploited as a durable cathode material based on ionic displacement mechanism for RMBs. The copper ions in the Se2− based sub‐lattices are reversibly exchanged by Mg2+ ions without causing lattice collapse. Owing to the same face‐centered cubic Se2− sub‐lattices and similar unit cell size of Cu2–xSe and MgSe, the energy barrier for lattice reconstruction during cycling processes is very low, significantly improving the rate performance, structural stability, and cycle life of the Cu2–xSe cathode. Moreover, metal Cu is in situ generated during discharging, thus greatly facilitating electron transport. Comprehensive characterizations confirm that the Cu2–xSe cathode undergoes reversible copper ion extrusion/reinjection during the discharge−charge steps. This work suggests the great potential for exploring high‐performance electrode materials based on ionic displacement mechanism for advanced multivalent‐ion secondary batteries.
Cooperative Cationic and Anionic Redox Reactions in Ultrathin Polyvalent Metal Selenide Nanoribbons for High-Performance Electrochemical Magnesium-Ion Storage

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as potential energy storage devices due to their high volumetric specific capacity, good safety, as well as source abundance. Despite extensive efforts devoted to constructing an efficient magnesium battery system, the sluggish Mg2+ diffusion in conventional cathode materials often leads to slow rate kinetics, low capacity, and poor cycling lifespan. Although transition metal selenides with soft anion frameworks have attracted extensive attention, their Mg2+ storage mechanism still needs to be clarified. Herein, we demonstrate that the ultrathin CoSe2 nanoribbons can be used as a robust cathode material for RMBs and reveal a novel Mg2+ storage mechanism based on cooperative cationic (Co) and anionic (Se) redox processes via systematic ex-situ characterizations. Compared to other metal selenide cathodes based on conversion reactions of solely metal cations, the cooperative cationic-anionic redox reactions of the CoSe2 cathode contribute to obtaining an enhanced specific capacity and boosted electrochemical kinetics. Moreover, on one hand, the ultrathin nanoribbon structure enables effective contact between the electrode material and electrolyte and on the other hand significantly reduces the length and time consumption of Mg2+ diffusion, leading to dominated surface-driven capacitance-controlled Mg2+ storage behavior and rapid Mg2+ storage kinetics. As a result, the ultrathin CoSe2 nanoribbon cathode exhibits a reversible discharge capacity of ∼130 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1, good rate capability (116 mAh g-1 at 300 mA g-1), and long cyclability over 600 cycles. This finding confirms the development potentiality of polyvalent metal selenide cathode materials based on a cooperative cationic-anionic redox mechanism for the construction of next-generation multivalent secondary batteries.
Facile preparation of bimetallic cobalt-copper selenide nanosheets as stable cathode materials for rechargeable magnesium batteries

Abstract:The pursuit of novel cathode materials with excellent performance is the key to promoting the application of rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs). Herein, bimetallic copper-cobalt selenide (CuCo 2 Se 4 ) as a cathode material for RMBs, synthesized via a microwave-assisted method. In contrast to the monometallic selenide (Co 0.85 Se), CuCo 2 Se 4 exhibits a high reversible capacity of 108 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 after 80 cycles, and a superior rate capability (90 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 ). The crystal phase transition of the conversion electrode material during the cycles is analyzed using ex-situ XRD technology. The enhanced stability of bimetallic selenide provides a good experimental support for the preparation of high-performance rechargeable magnesium batteries based on bimetallic strategy.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB) have emerged as one of the most promising alternatives to lithium‐ion batteries due to the prominent advantages of magnesium metal anodes. Nevertheless, their application is hindered by sluggish Mg‐ion storage kinetics in cathodes, although various structural modifications of cathode materials have been performed. Herein, an electrolyte design using an anion‐incorporated Mg‐ion solvation structure is developed to promote the Mg‐ion storage reactions of conversion‐type cathode materials. The addition of the trifluoromethanesulfonate anion (OTf−) in the ether‐based Mg‐ion electrolyte modulates the solvation structure of Mg2+ from [Mg(DME)3]2+ to [Mg(DME)2.5OTf]+ (DME = dimethoxy ethane), which facilitates Mg‐ion desolvation and thus significantly expedites the charge transfer of the cathode material. As a result, the as‐prepared CuSe cathode material on copper current collector exhibits a considerable increase in magnesium storage capacity from 61% (228 mAh g−1) to 95% (357 mAh g−1) of the theoretical capacity at 0.1 A g−1 and a more than twofold capacity increase at a high current density of 1.0 A g−1. Abstract:This work is developed an advanced non‐nucleophilic Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte and suitable MoS2@CMK/S cathode. Due to the in situ formation of advantageous MgF2 containing SEI at Mg/electrolyte interface, the assembled Mg/S batteries are delivered the highest capacity of 1210 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 C and exhibited excellent long‐term cycling stability with reversible capacity of 370 mAh g‐1 at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation batteries. However, the popularization of RMBs is seriously plagued due to the lack of suitable non‐nucleophilic electrolytes and the passivation of Mg anode. Herein, a novel non‐nucleophilic electrolyte is developed by introducing (s)‐1‐methoxy‐2‐propylamine (M4) into themagnesium aluminum chloride complex (MACC)‐like electrolyte. The as‐synthesizes Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte enables robust reversible cycling of Mg plating/stripping with low overpotential, high anodic stability, and ionic conductivity (8.56 mS cm−1). These features should be mainly attributed to the in situ formation of an MgF2 containing Mg2+‐conducting interphase, which dramatically suppresses the passivation and parasitic reaction of Mg anode with electrolyte. Remarkably, the Mg/S batteries assemble with as‐synthesize electrolyte and a new type MoS2@CMK/S cathode deliver unprecedented electrochemical performance. Specifically, the Mg/S battery exhibited the highest reversible capacity up to 1210 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, excellent rate capability and satisfactory long‐term cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 370 mAh g−1 (coulombic efficiency of ≈100%) at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. The study findings provide a novel strategy and inspiration for designing efficient non‐nucleophilic Mg electrolyte and suitable sulfur‐host materials for practical Mg/S battery applications.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (rMBs) are regarded as an alternative to lithium -ion batteries but are hindered by low cycling stability and sluggish kinetics at present. Herein, we report a sandwichstructured CuS/hNCNC@rGO cathode for rMBs by immobilizing CuS nanoparticles on the hierarchical nitrogen -doped carbon nanocages (hNCNCs) followed by wrapping the reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The charge/discharge mechanism is established based on the unique mixed -valence CuS double -salt structure, i.e., Cu 2+ S 2 2- , Cu + 2 S 2- , which was neglected in the previous studies of CuS-based rMBs. The cathode achieves a high reversible specific capacity of 285 mAh g - 1 at 100 mA g - 1 , an outstanding rate capability of 158 mAh g - 1 at 1,000 mA g - 1 , and ultralong cycling stability at room temperature, superior to most reported cathode materials to date. This study provides a fundamental understanding on the Mg storage mechanism of CuS and suggests a promising strategy for constructing high-performance conversion -type cathodes for rMBs.
Interfacial Covalent Bonding Coupled Ultrafine CuS-nanocrystals/MXene Heterostructure for Efficient and Durable Magnesium Storage

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) hold great potential for large-scale energy storage due to the dendrite-free deposition and high theoretical volumetric capacity of magnesium anode. However, the sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility of cathodes hinder their development in terms of high capacity and long cycling stability. Herein, a confined in-situ growth strategy is presented to construct novel copper sulfide (CuS)/delaminated Ti3C2Tx MXene (d-Ti3C2Tx) heterostructure, where ultrafine CuS nanocrystals are tightly anchored on the d-Ti3C2Tx substrate through S–Ti–C interfacial covalent bonding. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the strong interaction not only enhances the conductivity of CuS, enabling rapid charge transfer, but also effectively maintains the structure stability during the charge/discharge process. As a result, the CuS/d-Ti3C2Tx heterojunction exhibited high reversible specific capacity (336.5 mAh g−1) and outstanding rate capability. Remarkably, an impressive long-term cycling performance with a stable capacity of 92.2 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1 was achieved over 1000 cycles. This study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating CuS with d-Ti3C2Tx MXene and provides an avenue for designing high-performance cathode materials for RMBs.

High‐Energy Interlayer‐Expanded Copper Sulfide Cathode Material in Non‐Corrosive Electrolyte for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB) have been regarded as an alternative to lithium‐based batteries because of their abundant elemental resource, high theoretical volumetric capacity, and multi‐electron redox reaction without the dendrite formation of magnesium metal anode. However, their development is impeded by their poor electrode/electrolyte compatibility and the strong Coulombic effect of the multivalent Mg2+ ions in cathode materials. Herein, copper sulfide material is developed as a high‐energy cathode for RMBs with a non‐corrosive Mg‐ion electrolyte. Given the benefit of its optimized interlayer structure, good compatibility with the electrolyte, and enhanced surface area, the as‐prepared copper sulfide cathode exhibits unprecedented electrochemical Mg‐ion storage properties, with the highest specific capacity of 477 mAh g−1 and gravimetric energy density of 415 Wh kg−1 at 50 mA g−1, among the reported cathode materials of metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, and polyanion‐type compounds for RMBs. Notably, an impressive long‐term cycling performance with a stable capacity of 111 mAh g−1 at 1 C (560 mA g−1) is achieved over 1000 cycles. The results of the present study offer an avenue for designing high‐performance cathode materials for RMBs and other multivalent batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), given their high abundance and desirable safety characteristics. However, the strong polarization of divalent ions has hindered the satisfactory insertion and dissolution of Mg 2+ ions in the cathode, thereby limiting the electrochemical performance of the system. To address this issue, magnesium/lithium hybrid batteries (MLHB) have been developed, using both Mg 2+ and Li + ions as carriers to enhance the electrochemical kinetic performance and maintain safety. In this study, a Cu 2 Se/CoSe heterostructured cathode is designed to extremely promote the electrochemical performance of MLHB. When it is applied to MLHB, the battery exhibites extremely high initial discharge capacity, reversible capacity and cycling stability. The initial discharge capacity obtains 385 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , and a reversible capacity of 140 mAh g −1 is maintained after 200 cycles. The role of the special heterostructures and the effect of pre-lithiation on cathode materials are discussed in detail, on the basis of which a two-step storage mechanism of hybrid ions in Cu 2 Se/CoSe is proposed. This work lays the foundation for designing and constructing high-capacity, excellent cycle stability cathodes with fast charge-transfer kinetics.

Usually, the intercalation-type cathodes such as Mo6S8, MoS2 and Ti3C2Tx suffer from the inferior rate performance owing to the sluggish Mg2+ ions solid-diffusion kinetics, and the conversion-type cathodes such as S and CuS are beset with the poor cycling stability owing to the pulverization and loss of active species. Recently, sp(2) carbon materials exhibited considerable magnesium storage performance through an interfacial charge storage/release. Ideal carbon-based cathodes for rMBs should possess the features of high specific surface area and abundant active sites for magnesium storage, high conductivity and porous structure for facilitating charge transfer, as well as high mechanical stability. Herein, we employed the hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNC) featuring large surface area, abundant surface defects, coexisting micro-meso-macropores and high conductivity as the rMBs cathode for the first time, which exhibited high discharge capacity of 71 mAh.g(-1) at 100 mA.g(-1), excellent rate performance (60 mAh.g(-1) at 2000 mA.g(-1)) and ultra-high cycling stability (83% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA.g(-1)). The capacitive magnesium storage mechanism is predominant in the charging-discharging process. Theoretical studies reveal that magnesium ions are adsorbed on the carbon, pyridinic-nitrogen or pyrrolic-nitrogen atoms at the edge of micropores. The excellent magnesium storage performance of hNCNC is attributed to the following reasons: (i) the hNCNC with large surface area (1590 m(2).g(-1)), abundant micropore defects and high content of pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen (4.49 at.%) provides sufficient active sites for magnesium storage, resulting in the high discharge capacity; (ii) the coexisting micro-meso-macropores structure, good conductivity and improved wettability via N-doping facilitate the charge transfer kinetics, and decrease the equivalent series resistance of rMBs, thereby leading to the improved rate capability; (iii) the robust scaffold of hNCNC and the capacitive-dominated magnesium storage mechanism ensure the high cycling stability. This study demonstrates the high-rate and durable performance of hNCNC in rMBs, and suggests a promising strategy to improve the rMBs performance by increasing edges and suitable dopants of nanocarbons.
Facile preparation of CuCo$_2$S$_4$/Cu$_7$S$_4$ nanocomposites as high-performance cathode materials for rechargeable magnesium batteries

Abstract:Searching for efficient and high-performance cathode materials for rechargeable magnesium ion batteries (RMBs) is urgent for exploring sustainable energy technologies. However, the majority of cathode materials for RMBs usually suffer from low rate capacity and inferior cycle performance caused by structure collapse. Herein, ternary CuCo$_2$S$_4$/Cu$_7$S$_4$ composites with nano-sized are first synthesized by a facile solvothermal method in this work and the magnesium ion storage behavior is discussed when applied in the cathode for RMBs. Electrochemical results demonstrate that the nanosphere-like CuCo$_2$S$_4$/Cu$_7$S$_4$ composites exhibit a high initial discharge capacity of 256 mAh/g at 10 mA/g and 123 mAh/g at 300 mA/g at room temperature. Furthermore, an outstanding long-term cyclic stability with a reversible capacity of 106 mA/g after 300 cycles and the coulombic efficiency of about 99% are achieved at 300 mA/g. Such remarkable electrochemical performance is owing to the nanosphere-like structure, ternary composition and pseudocapacitive storage behavior of CuCo$_2$S$_4$/Cu$_7$S$_4$. The results of this work indicate that the CuCo$_2$S$_4$/Cu$_7$S$_4$ nanocomposites synthesized by a facile and efficient method are promising cathodes for RMBs in energy storage/conversion application.
High-Energy-Density Rechargeable Mg Battery Enabled by a Displacement Reaction

Abstract:Because of its high theoretical volumetric capacity and dendrite-free stripping/plating of Mg, rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) hold great promise for high energy density in consumer electronics. However, the lack of high-energy-density cathodes severely constrains their practical applications. Herein, for the first time, we report that a CuS cathode can fully reversibly work through a displacement reaction in CuS/Mg pouch cells at room temperature and provide a high capacity of ∼400 mA h/g in a MACC electrolyte, corresponding to the gravimetric and volumetric energy density of 608 W h/kg and1042 W h/L, respectively. Even after 80 cycles, CuS/Mg pouch cells can maintain a high capacity of 335 mA h/g. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that CuS undergoes a displacement reaction route rather than a typical conversion mechanism. This work will provide a guide for more discovery of high-performance cathode candidates for RMBs.

Abstract:The synthesized InSb‐10%C anode for rechargeable magnesium batteries shows a high capacity of 448 mA h g–1, and a high‐rate performance of 168 mA h g–1 at 500 mA g–1, thanks to the stabilized cellular graphitized amorphous carbon structure, and is also promising in the full cell matched with a chlorine‐free ether‐based electrolytes. Pure magnesium anode used in rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB) exhibits high theoretical capacity but has been challenged by the passivation issue with conventional electrolytes. Alloy‐type anodes have the potential to surpass this issue and have attracted increasing attention. However, the kinetic performance and stabilities of conventional alloy anodes are still constrained. In this study, the InSb‐10%C anode is synthesized by a two‐step high‐energy ball milling process. The InSb‐10%C anode exhibits a remarkably high capacity of up to 448 mA h g−1, significantly improved cycle performance (234 mA h g−1 at 100 cycles) and rate performance (168 mA h g−1 at 500 mA g−1). The above‐mentioned superior performance of the InSb‐10%C anode for RMBs is attributed to the cellular graphitized amorphous carbon composite structure (CGA) which effectively refines the particle size and restricts the volume expansion. Additionally, the reduced surface electron density of InSb combined with the high conductivity resulting from graphitization enhances the Mg2+ diffusion performance. Notably, the InSb‐10%C anode demonstrates good compatibility with conventional halogen‐free salt ether‐based electrolytes in the full battery configuration.

Revealing the Reaction and Fading Mechanism of FeSe2 Cathodes for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable Mg batteries (RMBs) are advantageous large-scale energy-storage devices because of the high abundance and high safety, but exploring high-performance cathodes remains the largest difficulty for their development. Compared with oxides and sulfides, selenides show better Mg-storage performance because the weaker interaction with the Mg2+ cation favors fast kinetics. Herein, nanorod-like FeSe2 was synthesized and investigated as a cathode for RMBs. Compared with microspheres and microparticles, nanorods exhibit higher capacity and better rate capability with a smaller particle size. The FeSe2 nanorods show a high capacity of 191 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 and a good rate performance of 39 mAh g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 . Ex situ characterizations demonstrate the Mg2+ intercalation mechanism for FeSe2 , and a slight conversion reaction occurs on the surface of the particles. The capacity fading is mainly because of the dissolution of Fe2+ , which is caused by the reaction between Fe2+ and Cl- of the electrolyte during the charge process on the surface of the particles. The surface of FeSe2 is mainly selenium after long cycling, which may also dissolve in the electrolyte during cycling. The present work develops a new type of Mg2+ intercalation cathode for RMBs. More importantly, the fading mechanism revealed herein has considered the specificity of Mg battery electrolyte and would assist a better understanding of selenide cathodes for RMBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have gradually got attention due to the high theoretical capacity, low cost and high security. However, the lack of suitable cathode materials has been a major obstacle to the development of RMBs. Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have been studied extensively because of their high theoretical specific capacity and other advantages. However, the diffusion rate of Mg2+ in TMSs is slow and side reactions are easy to occur. In this work, soft anion doping strategy was adopted at Co4S3 cathode material. After doping the appropriate content of Se, it showed the specific capacity of 248 mAh g–1 at a current density of 100 mA g–1. The mechanism of magnesium storage was investigated by ex‐situ technique. This work laid a foundation for researching cobalt‐based sulfide in cathode materials of RMBs.
