Abstract:Affective computing, representing the forefront of human-machine interaction, is confronted with the pressing challenges of the execution speed and power consumption brought by the transmission of massive data. Herein, we introduce a bionic organic memristor inspired by the ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) to facilitate near-sensor affective computing based on electroencephalography (EEG). It is constructed from a coordination polymer comprising Co ions and benzothiadiazole (Co-BTA), featuring multiple switching sites for redox reactions. Through advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that when subjected to a bias voltage, only the site where Co ions bind with N atoms from four BTA molecules becomes activated, while others remain inert. This remarkable phenomenon resembles the selective in situ activation of LGICs on the postsynaptic membrane for neural signal regulation. Consequently, the bionic organic memristor network exhibits outstanding reliability (200 000 cycles), exceptional integration level (210 pixels), ultra-low energy consumption (4.05 pJ), and fast switching speed (94 ns). Moreover, the built near-sensor system based on it achieves emotion recognition with an accuracy exceeding 95%. This research substantively adds to the ambition of realizing empathetic interaction and presents an appealing bionic approach for the development of novel electronic devices.

Abstract:Bio-inspired computing promises fundamentally different ways to advances in artificial intelligence with extreme energy efficiency. Memristive technologies due to the non-volatility, high density, low-power, and synaptic bionic properties can help in realizing bio-inspired architecture and its hardware implementation. This paper proposes a novel physics-oriented memristor model with coexistence of negative differential resistance (NDR) effect and resistive switching (RS) memory behavior for bio-inspired computing. Firstly, an Ag/TiOx/FTO memristor is fabricated using sol-gel and magnetron sputtering method, and its performance test demonstrates that the coexistence of NDR effect and RS memory behavior can be modulated by the moisture. Then, a physical-oriented memristor model is constructed, which provides the possibility to explore the dynamics of the coexistence of NDR effect and RS memory behavior in simulation. Furthermore, a memristor-based affective computing circuit emulating the process of human affective associative learning is designed. The experiment demonstrates that the coexistence of NDR effect and RS memory behavior can change the memory time without additional circuit and cost, which is expected to realize the automatic conversion from short-term memory to long-term memory in bio-inspired computing.

Abstract:We present a circuit design of the hierarchical attention network for multimodal affective computing, which can be used in mental health monitoring. Specifically, a kind of cost-effective memristor is fabricated using the albumen protein, and the corresponding testing performance is conducted to ensure its efficiency and stability. Then, considering the hierarchical mechanism inspired by the human limbic system, the nanoscale memristors arranged in a crossbar array configuration are further applied to construct a compact hierarchical attention network that can perform the multimodal affective computing. Furthermore, based on the wearable technology and flexible electronics technology, a mental health monitoring system with low privacy invasiveness, low energy consumption, and low fabrication cost can be designed. Based on the mapping relationship between the multimodal affective computing and mental health, the mental health state of the current user can be monitored. This study is expected to help achieving the deep integration of neuromorphic electronics and mental health monitoring system, further promoting the development of next-generation consumer healthcare technology in smart city.

Abstract:Mental health problem is an increasingly common social issue leading to diseases such as depression, addiction, and heart attack. Facial expression is one of the most natural and universal signals for human beings to convey their emotional states and behavior intentions. Numerous studies have been conducted on automatic human emotion classification that can effectively establish the relationship between facial expression and mental health, while still suffer from intensive computation and low efficiency. Here, we present a memristive circuit design of Sequencer network for human emotion classification, which offers an environmentally friendly approach with low cost and easily deployable hardware. Specifically, a kind of eco-friendly memristor is fabricated using two-dimensional (2D) materials, and the corresponding testing performance is conducted to make sure its efficiency and stability. Then, the memristor-based Sequencer block, as a core component of Sequencer network, consisting of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) circuit and some necessary function circuit modules is proposed. Based on this, the memristive Sequencer network can be achieved. Furthermore, the proposed memristive Sequencer network is applied for human emotion classification. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed circuit has advantages in computational efficiency and cost, comparable to the main existing software-based methods.

Abstract:This paper delves into the integration of memristors with other sensing and controlling systems and offers a comprehensive analysis of the recent research advancements in memristor‐based bionic tactile devices. It also outlines future research directions and discusses the potential application prospects of these devices, while proposing feasible solutions to the identified challenges. Bioinspired tactile devices can effectively mimic and reproduce the functions of the human tactile system, presenting significant potential in the field of next‐generation wearable electronics. In particular, memristor‐based bionic tactile devices have attracted considerable attention due to their exceptional characteristics of high flexibility, low power consumption, and adaptability. These devices provide advanced wearability and high‐precision tactile sensing capabilities, thus emerging as an important research area within bioinspired electronics. This paper delves into the integration of memristors with other sensing and controlling systems and offers a comprehensive analysis of the recent research advancements in memristor‐based bionic tactile devices. These advancements incorporate artificial nociceptors and flexible electronic skin (e‐skin) into the category of bio‐inspired sensors equipped with capabilities for sensing, processing, and responding to stimuli, which are expected to catalyze revolutionary changes in human‐computer interaction. Finally, this review discusses the challenges faced by memristor‐based bionic tactile devices in terms of material selection, structural design, and sensor signal processing for the development of artificial intelligence. Additionally, it also outlines future research directions and application prospects of these devices, while proposing feasible solutions to address the identified challenges.

Abstract:Neuromorphic computing is expected to realize fast and energy-efficient artificial neural networks and address the inherent limitations of von Neumann architectures in dedicated communication applications. To realize this vision, we identify the existing challenges in neuromorphic computing and provide a specific solution from the perspectives of device, circuit, and system. At the device level, we fabricate a metal-oxide-based memristor with high stability, low power, and good scalability, serving as the fundamental component of a neuromorphic computing system. At the circuit level, the basic circuit units and necessary peripheral circuits are designed to realize efficient vector-matrix multiplication and different functions, including nonlinear activation operation, subtraction operation, added operation, and so on. At the system level, a flexible neuromorphic computing system with a hardware-friendly training approach is proposed, which can perform effective communication with good trade-off between accuracy and time consumption. This study is expected to achieve the deep integration of nanotechnology, energy-efficient integrated circuits, and neuromorphic computing systems into communication applications.

Abstract:The one-dimensional and two-dimensional emotion models realized by hardware circuits have been studied. However, three-dimensional emotional model which is most suitable for human emotion has not been considered. In this paper, a bionic circuit of three-dimensional emotional space model is proposed, which can generate brain-like emotions according to the information of visual, speech and text. The designed memristor circuits are based on the brain emotion theory of limbic system, including thalamus, sensory cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, amygdala and other circuit modules. Moreover, the perceptual brain and rational brain in the memristor circuits are also considered. The three-dimensional model in this paper is a PAD emotional space model composed of three dimensions: pleasure (P), arousal (A) and dominance (D). Many emotions can be expressed by using the PAD emotional model. In addition, the PAD emotional model composed of memristor circuits is applied to mood congruity, which considers the relationship between emotion and learning. The PAD emotion designed by memristor circuits may provide a reference for bionic robot to realize human-computer emotional companionship.

Abstract:Empathy is the emotional capacity to feel and understand the emotions experienced by other human beings from within their frame of reference. As a unique psychological faculty, empathy is an important source of motivation to behave altruistically and cooperatively. Although human-like emotion should be a critical component in the construction of artificial intelligence (AI), the discovery of emotional elements such as empathy is subject to complexity and uncertainty. In this work, we demonstrated an interesting electrical device (i.e., an MXene (Ti3C2) memristor) and successfully exploited the device to emulate a psychological model of "empathic blame". To emulate this affective reaction, MXene was introduced into memristive devices because of its interesting structure and ionic capacity. Additionally, depending on several rehearsal repetitions, self-adaptive characteristic of the memristive weights corresponded to different levels of empathy. Moreover, an artificial neural system was designed to analogously realize a moral judgment with empathy. This work may indicate a breakthrough in making cool machines manifest real voltage-motivated feelings at the level of the hardware rather than the algorithm.

Abstract:As an emerging carbon-based material, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have shown unstoppable prospects in the field of bionic electronics with their outstanding optoelectronic properties and unique biocompatible characteristics. In this study, a novel CQD-based memristor is proposed for neuromorphic computing. Unlike the models that rely on the formation and rupturing of conductive filaments, it is speculated that the resistance switching mechanism of CQD-based memristors is due to the conductive path caused by the hybridization state transition of the sp 2 carbon domain and sp 3 carbon domain induced by the reversible electric field. This avoids the drawback of uncontrollable nucleation sites leading to the random formation of conductive filaments in resistive switching. Importantly, it illustrates that the coefficient of variation ( C V ) of the threshold voltage can be as low as −1.551% and 0.083%, which confirms the remarkable uniform switching characteristics. Interestingly, the Pavlov's dog reflection as an important biological behavior can be demonstrated by the samples. Finally, the accuracy recognition rate of MNIST handwriting can reach up to 96.7%, which is very close to the ideal number (97.8%). A carbon-based memristor based on a new mechanism presented provides new possibilities for the improvement of brain-like computing.
