Abstract:Background: Residency program directors will likely emphasize the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 2 clinical knowledge (CK) exam more during residency application given the recent USMLE Step 1 transition to pass/fail scoring. We examined how internal medicine clerkship characteristics and NBME subject exam scores affect USMLE Step 2 CK performance. Design: The authors used univariable and multivariable generalized estimating equations to determine associations between Step 2 CK performance and internal medicine clerkship characteristics and NBME subject exams. The sample had 21,280 examinees' first Step 2 CK scores for analysis. Results: On multivariable analysis, Step 1 performance (standardized β = 0.45, p < .001) and NBME medicine subject exam performance (standardized β = 0.40, p < .001) accounted for approximately 60% of the variance in Step 2 CK performance. Students who completed the internal medicine clerkship last in the academic year scored lower on Step 2 CK (Mdiff = -3.17 p < .001). Students who had a criterion score for passing the NBME medicine subject exam scored higher on Step 2 CK (Mdiff = 1.10, p = .03). There was no association between Step 2 CK performance and other internal medicine clerkship characteristics (all p > 0.05) nor with the total NBME subject exams completed (β=0.05, p = .78). Conclusion: Despite similarities between NBME subject exams and Step 2 CK, the authors did not identify improved Step 2 CK performance for students who had more NBME subject exams. The lack of association of Step 2 CK performance with many internal medicine clerkship characteristics and more NBME subject exams has implications for future clerkship structure and summative assessment. The improved Step 2 CK performance in students that completed their internal medicine clerkship earlier warrants further study given the anticipated increase in emphasis on Step 2 CK.

Abstract:Since the elimination of numerical scoring of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, the perceived importance of USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) scores in residency placement has increased. It is known that socioeconomic status (SES) and other demographic factors can be barriers to success in standardized assessment, but few recent studies report the relationship between student demographics, including SES, with Step 2 CK scores in the context of exam practice material access and usage. In this study, we investigated predictors of Step 2 CK success across two years at one institution.

Abstract:AIM The study aims to determine resident applicant metrics most predictive of academic and clinical performance as measured by the Council of Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) examination scores and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) clinical performance (Milestones) in the aftermath of United States Medical Licensing Examination Scores (USMLE) Step 1 becoming a pass/fail examination. METHODS In this retrospective study, electronic and paper documents for Wayne State University Obstetrics and Gynecology residents matriculated over a 5-year period ending July 2018 were collected. USMLE scores, clerkship grade, and wording on the letters of recommendation as well as Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) were extracted from the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and scored numerically. Semiannual Milestone evaluations and yearly CREOG scores were used as a marker of resident performance. Statistical analysis on residents (n = 75) was performed using R and SPSS and significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Mean USMLE score correlated with CREOG performance and, of all 3 Steps, Step 1 had the tightest association. MSPE and class percentile also correlated with CREOGs. Clerkship grade and recommendation letters had no correlation with resident performance. Of all metrics provided by ERAS, none taken alone, were as useful as Step 1 scores at predicting performance in residency. Regression modeling demonstrated that the combination of Step 2 scores with MSPE wording restored the predictive ability lost by Step 1. CONCLUSIONS The change of USMLE Step 1 to pass/fail may alter resident selection strategies. Other objective markers are needed in order to evaluate an applicant’s future performance in residency.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine students' perceptions of pass/fail scoring for Step 1, particularly when applying to competitive specialties. This study also investigated whether this transition increased anxiety among medical students and elicited student perspectives on the most critical components of residency applications. Introduction: The United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 Board Exam transitioned from a traditional numeric score to pass/fail for exams taken on or after January 26, 2022. One justification for this change, according to a statement from USMLE, was to ease the transition between undergraduate and graduate medical education. Although many factors are considered when selecting candidates to interview for residency, Step 1 scores were historically used as an important metric. Few studies specifically evaluated medical student's attitudes toward the change in Step 1 grading. Methods: An online survey was distributed to Penn State College of Medicine medical students in the 2024 to 2027 classes. Statistical analysis was conducted on responses to research plans, attitudes regarding Step 1 pass/fail, match rates, and importance of application components. Results: There was a 21.3% response rate (127/596) to the survey with 30.7% pursuing a competitive specialty. Students applying into competitive specialties felt their chances of matching changed significantly compared to students applying to other specialties (either increased (25.6% vs 10.2%, P < .001), or decreased (28.2% vs10.3%, P < .001). Majority of students (73.2%) agreed with the decision to make Step 1 pass/fail, however, students reported increased anxiety surrounding Step 2 scores. There was a significant association between which aspects students believed were most important for matching (letters of recommendation and performance on Acting Internships) and those they believed program directors would weigh heaviest (P < .001). Conclusion: Medical students report increased anxiety with Step 2 after Step 1 became pass/fail, although students overwhelmingly agreed with this change. To address this, medical schools should offer further guidance and resources to students, focusing on mentorship and methods to optimize residency applications for their chosen specialties.

Abstract:Introduction: After the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) shifted the Step 1 licensure exam to pass/fail, there have been limited studies to analyze changes in student study strategies. Material and methods: Surveys were distributed to third- and fourth-year medical students at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS). The response rate was 66%. Results: The largest proportion (18.81%) of students chose 8 weeks of study time. 40.59% of students increased the length of their study period. To determine time allocated for dedicated study, 37.26% of respondents consulted near-peers who had already taken Step 1. Students also considered prior experiences with standardized tests (15.57%), personal reasons (14.62%), and conversations with school advisors (13.21%). 44.55% of students studied for 9-11 h a day, and 42.57% studied for 5-8 h a day. 52.69% of students scored between 70 and 80% on their final practice NBME test before their Step 1 exam. One hundred percent of respondents passed the exam. Exam non-extenders achieved higher end average practice test scores with shorter study periods. No differences in Step 1 study time or intensity were found when comparing students by intended specialty competitiveness. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated patterns in study strategies for the new pass/fail Step 1 exam that may prove useful for curriculum design and schedule plan for future cohorts. Abstract:Purpose: To examine the effect of (1) gender on Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) content area performance, (2) gender on the relationships between Step 1 scores and Step 2 CK content area performance, and (3) medical school characteristics on the relationships between examinee characteristics and Step 2 CK content area performance. Method: The sample included 23,538 examinees from 136 Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical schools/campuses. Descriptive statistics were computed, and a series of examinees-nested-in-schools hierarchical linear models was conducted. Results: Observed differences indicated that women generally outperformed men in most content areas and that controlling for Step 1 scores increased these gender-related score differences. Step 1 scores were more associated with Step 2 CK content area performance for men. School characteristics were generally unrelated to the relationships between examinee characteristics and Step 2 CK content area performance. Conclusions: While past research indicated that women outperformed men in some content areas, and men outperformed women in others, the current study revealed a somewhat different pattern, with women outperforming men in most content areas.

Abstract:For diversity to exist in the medical graduate workforce, students from all backgrounds should have equitable opportunities of employment. Specialties have utilized a minimal threshold for USMLE Step 1 score when screening applicants for residency interviews. The OHSU SOM class of 2021 completed a 14-question voluntary survey on their Step 1 score and the following non-modifiable risk factors: Adverse Childhood Experience score (ACEs), sex, gender, Underrepresented in Medicine status (URiM), family income during adolescence, highest degree held by a guardian, discrimination experience during medical school, federal/state assistance use, and rural versus urban primary home. Descriptive statistics and unadjusted risk ratios were applied to study the relation between Step 1 score and non-modifiable risk factors as well as certain non-modifiable risk factors and ACEs ≥ 3. The mean Step 1 score was 230 (213, 247). Of the students, 28.2% identified ACEs ≥ 3, 13.6% were considered URiM, and 65.4% were female. URiM were 2.34 (1.30, 4.23),females were 2.77 (1.06–7.29), and those who experienced discrimination in medical school were 4.25 (1.85, 9.77) times more likely to have ACEs ≥ 3. Students who had ACEs ≥ 3 were 3.58 (1.75, 7.29) times less likely to meet a minimal threshold for residency interviews of 220. These are the first results to demonstrate a relationship between Step 1 score and ACEs. Those who identified as URiM, females, and those who experienced discrimination in medical school were at a higher risk of ACEs of ≥ 3. Step 1 transitioned to pass/fail in January 2022. However, the first application cycle that residencies will see pass/fail scoring is 2023–2024, and fellowships will continue to see scored Step 1 until, at the earliest, the 2026–2027 application cycle. These data contribute to a foundation of research that could apply to Step 2CK testing scores, and help to inform decisions about the diversity and equity of the residency interview process.

Relationship between pathology curricular approaches and performance in the United States medical licensing examination (USMLE), step 1: a national cross-sectional study

Abstract:A collaborative multi-institutional study was conducted to study the relationship between characteristics of pathology instruction and student performance in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), Step 1. Detailed descriptions of pathology instruction, such as curriculum format, style of instruction, and design of instruction of various areas of pathology for the 1996-1997 academic year were matched with Step 1 total scores and pathology subscores for 10,159 students from 88 schools who took the June 1997 examination. Hierarchical linear modeling was used for analysis while controlling for students' MCAT-bpv scores (Medical College Admission Test scores, average of biological and physical sciences and verbal reasoning). The Step 1 total scores correlate with Step 1 pathology subscores, and both correlate with students' MCAT-bpv scores. The MCAT-bpv scores account for most of the variation in Step 1 scores. Of all of the curricular variables analyzed, 2 possible factors that significantly influence the impact of MCAT-bpv scores on Step 1 scores are (1) multidisciplinary format of instruction and (2) discipline-based general pathology instruction in year 2. Overall, the multidisciplinary format reduced the impact of MCAT-bpv scores on both the Step 1 total score and the pathology subscore by 1 point per MCAT-bpv. Overall, the general pathology instruction in year-2 increased that impact on Step 1 total score by 1 point per MCAT-bpv. The slope became less steep with multidisciplinary format and more steep with year-2 general pathology instruction. As a result, students with higher MCAT-bpv scores tend to benefit from year-2 general pathology instruction, whereas those with lower MCAT-bpv scores appear to benefit from a multidisciplinary format. These differences become more apparent as the MCAT-bpv scores move away from the mean in either direction, indicating that scores of most students are not affected by curricular variables. Overall, there is no significant difference in the school means of Step 1 total scores and pathology subscores of schools with different curricular approaches. This is most likely due to the finding that the students' MCAT-bpv scores, and not curricular variables, are the major predictors of Step 1 scores, and all schools have a mix of students with various MCAT-bpv scores.
Impact of USMLE Step 1 transition to pass/fail scoring system on medical students' anxiety, sleep quality, and burnout

Abstract:Introduction: Originally designed to evaluate the application of foundational scientific knowledge in clinical contexts, the United States Medical License Exam (USMLE) Step 1 evolved into a comparative tool for assessing candidates with similar educational foundations. This transition heightened the pressure on medical students to excel in the exam. In response, collaborative efforts involving the National Board of Medical Examiners prompted a change from reporting scores to a pass/fail system. The true impact of this shift remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to assess the emotional toll - encompassing burnout, anxiety, depression, and sleep quality - experienced prior to taking the Step 1 exam. Additionally, it aims to uncover potential gender-based disparities in perceived anxiety and depression. Methods: The study encompasses the entirety of third-year medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine, who were invited to participate in a comprehensive survey. Drawing from retrospection, the survey relies on self-reported data regarding anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and burnout. Data compilation was anonymized and executed via Qualtrics platform. Results: A total of 102 medical students completed the survey, with a 97% pass rate for the USMLE Step 1. Despite their excellent performance, 75% of students reported inadequate sleep quality, and 68% exhibited mild to moderate anxiety levels. Among them, a higher percentage of females (83%) experienced anxiety compared to their male counterparts (50%). Furthermore, 66% of students felt that their commitment to education exceeded what was reasonable for their well-being. Conclusions: The transition from traditional scoring to a pass/fail system was ostensibly intended to enhance the mental well-being of medical students. Nevertheless, our findings underscore that students continue to endure heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout during the pivotal month leading up to the Step 1 examination.

Abstract:Geriatric adults (at least 65 years of age) completed the Functional Status Questionnaire twice, first using the original paper-and-pencil format and again using one of six computer-based interactive methods. Scoring via original and computer-based methods was identical. Satisfaction with computers was high. Of the interactive methods, touchscreen required least training and questionnaire completion time and was rated most useful.

Abstract:The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, arguably the most significant assessment in the USMLE examination series, changed from a 3-digit score to a pass/fail outcome in January 2022. Given the rapidly evolving body of literature on this subject, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the historical context and impact of this change on various stakeholders involved in residency selection. For this, relevant keyword-based searches were performed in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to identify relevant literature. Given the unique history of USMLE Step 1 in the US residency selection process and the score's correlation with future performance in board-certifying examinations in different specialties, this scoring change is predicted to significantly impact US Doctor of Medicine students, US Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students, international medical graduates, and residency program directors, among others. The significance and the rationale of the pass/fail change along with the implications for both residency applicants and educators are also summarized in this paper. Although medical programs, academic institutions, and residency organizing bodies across the United States have swiftly stepped up to ensure a seamless transition and have attempted to ensure equity for all, the conversion process carries considerable uncertainty for residency applicants. For educators, the increasing number of applications conflicts with holistic application screening, leading to the expected greater use of objective measures, with USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge likely becoming the preferred screening tool in lieu of Step 1.

Abstract:Twenty-six industrial workers, selected from employment records, were examined with a questionnaire, anthropometric measures, muscle strength measurements and filming during work cycles to study the influence of ergonomic factors on shoulder-neck complaints. No differences were observed when comparing age or anthropometric measurements between the nine workers with and the 17 without shoulder-neck complaints. Significantly weaker shoulder muscles were found in workers with shoulder-neck complaints than in those without. A higher median strain on the shoulders in the working situation of workers with shoulder-neck complaints than in the group with no complaints was suggested from the results of a biomechanical analysis of the different work tasks.

Abstract:Background Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics (Med/Peds) residencies rely on categorical program data to predict pass rates for the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Exam (ABIM-CE) and the American Board of Pediatrics Certifying Exam (ABP-CE). There is insufficient literature describing what best predicts a Med/Peds resident passing board exams. In this study, we aimed to determine how standardized test scores predict performance on ABIM-CE and ABP-CE for Med/Peds residents. Methodology We analyzed prior exam scores for 91/96 (95%) residents in a Med/Peds program from 2008 to 2017. Scores from the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1 and 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and In-Training Exams in Internal Medicine (ITE-IM) and Pediatrics (ITE-P) were analyzed with the corresponding ABIM-CE and ABP-CE first-time scores. Linear and logistic regression were applied to predict board scores/passage. Results USMLE 1 and 2 CK, ITE-IM, and ITE-P scores had a linear relationship with both ABIM-CE and ABP-CE scores. In the linear regression, adjusted R<sup>2</sup> values showed low-to-moderate predictive ability (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.11-0.35), with the highest predictor of ABIM-CE and ABP-CE being USMLE Step 1 (0.35) and Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-1) ITE-IM (0.33), respectively. Logistic regression showed odds ratios of passing board certifications ranging from 1.05 to 1.53 per point increase on the prior exam score. The PGY-3 ITE-IM was the best predictor of passing both certifying exams. Conclusions In one Med/Peds program, USMLE Steps 1 and 2 and all ITE-IM and ITE-P scores predicted certifying exam scores and passage. This provides Med/Peds-specific data to allow individualized resident counseling and guide programmatic improvements targeted to board performance.

Abstract:Standardized examinations measure progress throughout medical education. Successful completion of the American Board of Internal Medicine Certification Examination (ABIM-CE) benchmarks completion of internal medicine (IM) residency training. Recent declines in initial ABIM-CE pass rates may prompt residency programs to examine strategies to improve learner performance. We synthesized published literature on associations between the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), in-training examination (ITE), and board preparation to support residents for ABIM-CE. We searched MEDLINE for test performance and preparation strategies for IM board certification during training. Relevant articles published until March 15, 2024, were screened using pre-defined criteria for narrative review, then codified into three domains (USMLE, ITE, curriculum/program strategies). Findings were grouped by theme into considerations for training programs seeking guidance on learning augmentation plans to improve resident performance on ABIM-CE. Themes drawn from articles focused on USMLE include validity in predicting CE performance, noting (1) failing USMLE Step 1 is associated with failing ABIM-CE, (2) any USMLE score < 220 increases failure probability, and (3) a mean USMLE ≥ 250 approximates ~ 100% pass rates on board examination. Inferences from ITE-focused articles support use as a predictive tool; specifically, a score 70th percentile is predictive of passing. Lastly, inferences from curriculum- and program-focused articles suggest standard contents (conferences) do not correlate with CE passage, while targeted clinical reasoning and remediation plans do. IM residency programs should consider adopting learning augmentation strategies targeted to at-risk residents to support CE passage.

Abstract:Background United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 will transition to pass/fail score by 2022. We aim to investigate US medical students’ perspectives on the potential implications this transition would have on their education and career opportunities. Methods A cross-sectional study investigating US medical students’ perspectives on the implications of transition of the USMLE Step 1 exam to pass/fail. Students were asked their preferences regarding various aspects of the USMLE Step 1 examination, including activities, educational opportunities, expenses regarding preparation for the examination, and future career opportunities. Results 215 medical students responded to the survey, 59.1% were women, 80.9% were allopathic vs. 19.1% osteopathic students. 34.0% preferred the USMLE Step 1 to be graded on a pass/fail score, whereas 53.5% preferred a numeric scale. Osteopathic vs. allopathic students were more likely to report that the pass/fail transition will negatively impact their residency match (aOR = 1.454, 95% CI: 0.515, 4.106) and specialty of choice (aOR = 3.187, 95% CI: 0.980, 10.359). 57.7% of respondents reported that the transition to a pass/fail grading system will change their study habits. Conclusions The transition of the USMLE Step 1 to a pass/fail system has massive implications on medical students and residency programs alike. Though the majority of medical students did not prefer the USMLE Step 1 to have a pass/fail score, they must adapt their strategies to remain competitive for residency applications. Residency programs should create a composite score based off all aspects of medical students’ applications in order to create a holistic and fair evaluation and ranking system.
Best Study Strategy for the NBME Clinical Science Surgery Exam

Abstract:Introduction: Providing medical students with effective study strategies is paramount in fostering their success on the NBME Clinical Science Surgery exam. As of yet, there has not been a comprehensive inquiry into a study strategy for this exam. We aim to identify if the following are associated with higher NBME raw exam scores: (1) the use of popular study materials, (2) the number of study materials used, and (3) the amount of time spent studying throughout the clerkship. Methods: Over the period of 1 academic year, third-year medical students at our institution were administered a survey during their surgical clerkship inquiring about study materials used and hours spent studying per week. The data were then matched to students' raw NBME scores and then depersonalized. A total of 82 of 193 (42%) students responded with an overall average raw score of 76.74 on the NBME Clinical Science Surgery exam. By comparing our data to the NBME national average of 70 with a standard deviation of 8, a z test was used to compare the population mean to our sample means. Results: When investigating resources used, the combination of using an online question bank and a high yield review book yielded a high z score (6.23) and using 4 resources yielded the highest z score (6.28). Regarding study hours, the highest z scores were seen when students studied for 6 to 10 hours per week during the first half of the clerkship, and 11 to 15 hours per week during the second half of the clerkship (5.76 and 6.02, respectively). Conclusions: In conclusion, higher NBME Clinical Science Surgery exam scores were correlated with the use of multiple and varied types of resources and increasing study time closer to the exam date. The resources and methods utilized by students achieving the highest exam scores can be recommended by surgical educators and employed by other medical students to foster academic success.
Using resident performance on Step 2 to predict surgical residency success

Abstract:Objective To determine whether performance on Step 2 CK can be used to predict adverse academic outcomes in surgical residency. Methods Surgical resident data from a single institution was used. Step 2 scores of each resident were normalized against the average Step 2 CK score for each cohort's application cycle (ie, resident who scored 246 on a year with a national average of 246 would have a normed score of 1; resident with a score >246 would have a normed score >1 etc). All adverse events were classified, and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the effects of the Step 2 scores. Adverse academic outcomes were defined. Results Ninety-two surgical residents were evaluated with 7,182 faculty evaluations reviewed. Lower Step 2 CK scores demonstrated an increased likelihood of lower American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination performance <25% ( P = .011). The remaining adverse events, including passing the Qualifying Examination ( P = .998), passing the Certifying Examination ( P = .778), early withdrawal from the surgical residency program ( P = .565), failure on mock orals during postgraduate years 4 and 5 ( P = .731; P = .600), as well as selection of administrative chiefs ( P = .565), all demonstrated no correlation. Conclusion Emphasis has historically been placed on board examinations like Step 2 CK to predict overall success in residency and is used as an important metric during the interview process. However, these findings demonstrate that although lower scores on Step 2 CK correlate with a lower quartile on the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination during general surgery residency, the examination cannot predict success in all areas of surgical residency.

Abstract:Objective To investigate how the shift of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 to a Pass/Fail (P/F) scoring system impacts the perceptions of Urology Program Directors (PDs) on evaluating urology residency applicants. Methods and Materials A cross-sectional survey was sent to 117 PDs, including questions about program characteristics, perceptions of shelf scores and medical school rank post-transition, beliefs about the predictive value of Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) scores for board success and residency performance, and changes in applicant parameter ranking. Results 45 PDs (38% response rate) participated. Notably, 49% favored releasing quantitative clerkship grades, and 71% valued medical school rank more. Opinions on Step 1 scores' correlation with board success were split (49% agreed), and 44% endorsed Step 2 CK scores' connection to board performance. As predictors of good residents, only 9% and 22% considered Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores, respectively, indicative. Clerkship grades and Urology rotation recommendation letters-maintained significance, while research experience gained importance. Step 2 CK scores' importance rose but didn't match Step 1 scores' previous significance. Conclusion The transition to Pass/Fail (P/F) for USMLE Step 1 adds intricacies to urology residency selection, exposing Program Directors' uncertainties regarding clerkship grades and the relevance of medical school rank. This research underscores the dynamic nature of urology residency admissions, emphasizing the increasing importance of research in evaluating applicants and a diminishing emphasis on volunteering and leadership.

Abstract:PurposeGiven the significance of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 score moving from a 3-digit value to pass/fail, the authors investigated the impact of the change on students’ anxiety, approach to learning, and curiosity.MethodTwo cohorts of pre-clerkship medical students at three medical schools completed a composite of four instruments: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the revised two-factor Study Process Questionnaire, the Interest/Deprivation Type Epistemic Curiosity Scale, and the Short Grit Scale prior to taking the last 3-digit scored Step 1 in 2021 or taking the first pass/fail scored Step 1 in 2022. Responses of 3-digit and pass/fail exam takers were compared (Mann–Whitney U) and multiple regression path analysis was performed to determine the factors that significantly impacted learning strategies.ResultsThere was no difference between 3-digit (n = 86) and pass/fail exam takers (n = 154) in anxiety (STA-I scores, 50 vs. 49, p = 0.85), shallow learning strategies (22 vs. 23, p = 0.84), or interest curiosity scores (median scores 15 vs. 15, p = 0.07). However, pass/fail exam takers had lower deprivation curiosity scores (median 12 vs. 11, p = 0.03) and showed a decline in deep learning strategies (30 vs. 27, p = 0.0012). Path analysis indicated the decline in deep learning strategies was due to the change in exam scoring (β = − 2.0428, p < 0.05).ConclusionsCounter to the stated hypothesis and intentions, the initial impact of the change to pass/fail grading for USMLE Step 1 failed to reduce learner anxiety, and reduced curiosity and deep learning strategies.
