Abstract:Recently, liquid flow over monolayer graphene has been experimentally demonstrated to generate an induced voltage in the flow direction, and various physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the electricity‐generating process between liquid and graphene. However, there are significant discrepancies in the reported results with non‐ionic liquid: the observed voltage responses with deionized (DI) water vary from lab to lab under presumably similar flowing conditions. Here, a graphene‐piezoelectric material heterostructure is proposed for harvesting energy from water flow; it is shown that the introduction of a piezoelectric template beneath graphene results in an obvious voltage output up to 0.1 V even with DI water. This potential arises from a continuous charging–discharging process in graphene, which is suggested to be a result of a relatively retarded screening effect of the water for the generated piezoelectric charges than that of the graphene layer, as revealed by first‐principles calculations. This work considers a dynamic charge interaction among water, graphene, and the substrate, highlighting the crucial role of the underlying substrate in the electricity‐generating process, which will greatly enhance understanding of the flow‐induced voltage and push the graphene‐water nanogenerator close to practical applications.
Harvesting Energy from Water Flow over Graphene?

Abstract:It is reported excitingly in a previous letter (Nano Lett. 2011, 11, 3123) that a small piece of graphene sheet about 30 × 16 μm(2) immersed in flowing water with 0.6 M hydrochloric acid can produce voltage ~20 mV. Here we find that no measurable voltage can be induced by the flow over mono-, bi- and trilayered graphene samples of ~1 × 1.5 cm(2) in size in the same solution once the electrodes on graphene are isolated from interacting with the solution, mainly because the H(3)O(+) cations in the water adsorb onto graphene by strong covalent bonds as revealed by our first-principles calculations. When both the graphene and its metal electrodes are exposed to the solution as in the previous work, water flow over the graphene-electrode system can induce voltages from a few to over a hundred millivolts. In this situation, the graphene mainly behaves as a load connecting between the electrodes. Therefore, the harvested energy is not from the immersed carbon nanomaterials themselves in ionic water flow but dominated by the exposed electrodes.

Abstract:Converting ubiquitous environmental energy into electric power holds tremendous social and financial interests. Traditional energy harvesters and converters are limited by the specific materials and complex configuration of devices. Herein, it is presented that electric power can be directly produced from pristine graphene oxide (GO) without any pretreatment or additives once encountering the water vapor, which will generate an open-circuit-voltage of up to 0.4-0.7 V and a short-circuit-current-density of 2-25 µA cm-2 on a single piece of GO film. This phenomenon results from the directional movement of charged hydrogen ions through the GO film. The present work demonstrates and provides an extremely simple method for electric energy generation, which offers more applications of graphene-based materials in green energy converting field.

Abstract:Environmentally adaptive energy harvesting without additional stimuli is glamorous for next-generation energy technology. The ubiquitous air offers an alternative, but existing carbon-based moisture-electric generators can only generate desultory or insufficient power under air, owing to the absence of sustaining and effective energy harvesting and conversion architecture and mechanism. Here an eco-friendly and direct solid molding strategy was applied to rapidly fabricate heterogeneous oxo-graphene (H-mrGO) assembly. Inspired by root and trunk in natural vascular plants, rational fabrication of hierarchical porous structure immensely enhances spontaneous absorption of water molecules from air, which further induces rapid proton diffusion because of self-maintained and huge concentration difference. A single H-mrGO device can spontaneously produce an ultrahigh voltage of-1.39 V under air (RH approximate to 99%) and a high voltage of-1.2 V at low humidity (-30%) is obtained, accompanied by a power density of-1.1 W/m2. Meanwhile, it realizes a sustaining power output for external resistance over 40,000 s with good stability. Connecting several H-mrGO devices linearly magnifies voltage up to 10 V and obtains a wearable device, which can directly power different electronics without additional transverters. This work demonstrates the feasibility of a sustaining moisture-electric energy-harvesting strategy that loosens rigorous requirements of location or environmental conditions.

Abstract:Harvesting energy from multiple sources in our living environment is highly demanded, not only to cope with the increasing energy crises, but also to realize the self-powered electronics. Here we propose a graphene based two dimensional (2D) hybrid nanogenerator which can generate electricity through capturing sunlight as well as water flow. This 2D nanogenerator is mainly based on a graphene/silicon van der Waals Schottky diode. Two different metal electrodes are employed to build an asymmetric internal potential profile in the graphene channel, allowing for harvesting energy from sunlight in the 2D graphene plane with a maximum output power of 49.3 μW. When water flows over the graphene surface under illumination, an additional voltage can be generated simultaneously. This flow-induced voltage arises from an additional charge transfer in the graphene channel induced by a continuous doping and dedoping of the graphene, owing to a reversible wetting and dewetting effect of water during the water flowing process. The results show a physical picture of dynamic adjusting the charge transfer characteristic of graphene/silicon Schottky diode through water flow when under illumination, which may open prospects for practical applications for graphene nanogenerator.
Direct Current Electricity Generation from Dynamic Polarized Water–Semiconductor Interface

Abstract:Liquid electricity generator and hydrovoltaic technology have received numerous attentions, which can be divided into horizontal movement generator and vertical movement generator. The horizontal movement generator is limited for powering the integrated and miniaturized energy chip as the current output direction is depending on the moving direction of the water droplet, which means a sustainable and continuous direct-current (DC) electricity output can be hardly achieved because of the film of limited length. On the other hand, the existing vertical movement generators include triboelectricity or humidity gradient-based liquid electricity generator, where the liquid or water resource must be sustainably supplied to ensure continuous current output. Herein, we have designed an integratable vertical generator by sandwiching water droplets with semiconductor and metal, such as graphene or aluminum. This generator, named as polarized liquid molecular generator (PLMG), directly converts the lateral kinetic energy of water droplet into vertical DC electricity with an output voltage of up to 1.0 V from the dynamic water-semiconductor interface. The fundamental discovery of PLMG is related to the non-symmetric structure of liquid molecules, such as water and alcohols, which can be polarized under the guidance of built-in field caused by the Fermi level difference between metal and semiconductor, while the symmetric liquid molecules cannot produce any electricity on the opposite. Integratable PLMG with a large output power of 90 nW and voltage of 2.7 V has been demonstrated, meanwhile its small internal resistance of 250 kilohm takes a huge advantage in resistance matching with the impedance of electron components. The PLMG shows potential application value in the Internet of Things (IoTs) after proper miniaturization and integration.

Abstract:Abstract Harvesting energy from spontaneous water flow within artificial nanochannels is a promising route to meet sustainable power requirements of the fast-growing human society. However, large-scale nanochannel integration and the multi-parameter coupling restrictive influence on electric generation are still big challenges for macroscale applications. In this regard, long-range (1 to 20 cm) ordered graphene oxide assembled framework with integrated 2D nanochannels have been fabricated by a rotational freeze-casting method. The structure can promote spontaneous absorption and directional transmission of water inside the channels to generate considerable electric energy. A transfer learning strategy is implemented to address the complicated multi-parameters coupling problem under limited experimental data, which provides highly accurate performance optimization and efficiently guides the design of 2D water flow enabled generators. A generator unit can produce ~2.9 V voltage or ~16.8 μA current in a controllable manner. High electric output of ~12 V or ~83 μA is realized by connecting several devices in series or parallel. Different water enabled electricity generation systems have been developed to directly power commercial electronics like LED arrays and display screens, demonstrating the material’s potential for development of water enabled clean energy.

Abstract:Hydrovoltaic generators (HGs), which harness sustainable energy directly from water flow have garnered tremendous interest worldwide due to their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness and potential for powering wearable electronics. However, current HGs generally suffer from poor ion selectivity and resistance matching resulting in low output current, limiting their application scenarios. Herein, a flexible cotton fabric based hydrovoltaic generator (CFHG) fabricated by successive modification with carbon black (CB) and graphene oxide (GO) is proposed, contributing to a simple yet effective performance improvement. Benefiting from the enhanced charge transfer efficiency, ion selectivity and fast capillary flow contributed by CB, GO and fiber network respectively, a considerable open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of ∼0.75 V and a short-circuit current ( I sc ) of ∼8.7 μA are obtained when exposed to water droplets. Experimental results indicate that the power generation performance is influenced by various factors, including the amount of GO, cation size, liquid volume, polarity and pH, as well as temperature and humidity. Moreover, excellent flexibility and porosity of the CF substrate facilitate unconventional serial or parallel connections, providing sufficient power supply for commercial devices and wearable electronics. This research is highly significant for designing versatile power supplies for next-generation intelligent wearable electronics.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen by sunlight is a promising approach to solve energy and environmental problems. In this work, silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWs) photocathodes decorated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for PEC water splitting were successfully prepared by a flexible and scalable electrochemical reduction method. The SiNWs photocathode with the optimized rGO decoration (SiNWs/rGO20) shows an enhanced activity with a much higher photocurrent density and significantly positive shift of onset potential compared to the bare SiNWs arrays for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The enhanced PEC activity is ascribed to the high electrical conductivity of rGO and improved separation of the photogenerated charge carriers. This work not only demonstrates a facile, rapid and tunable electrochemical reduction method to produce rGO, but also exhibits an efficient protocol to enhance the PEC water splitting of silicon-based materials.

Abstract:The continuous exploration of clean‐energy technology is critical for the sustainable development of society. The recent work on the electric energy harvesting from water evaporation has made a significant contribution to the utilization of clean energy for self‐powering systems. Here, a novel metal–organic‐framework‐based hybrid nanomaterial is delicately designed and synthesized by the growth of UIO‐66 nanoparticles on 2D AlOOH nanoflakes. Due to the combined merits from the 2D morphology, which is inherited from the AlOOH nanoflakes, and the high surface potential, which originates from the UIO‐66 nanoparticles, the device made of the AlOOH/UIO‐66 hybrid nanomaterials can harvest electric energy from natural water evaporation. An open‐circuit voltage of 1.63 ± 0.10 V can be achieved on the prototype devices made of the hybrid nanomaterial. As a proof‐of‐concept application, a small electric appliance, e.g., a digital calculator, is powered up by a 3 × 3 device array connected in a combined series–parallel configuration.

Harvesting environment energy from water-evaporation over free-standing graphene oxide sponges

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Due to increasing global energy demands, environmental pollution, and the rapid development of self-powered devices, converting ubiquitous environmental energy to usable energy, e.g., electricity is attracting increasing interests worldwide. Herein, a type of porous graphene oxide (GO) sponges is fabricated using the freeze-drying method. Then an annealing treatment and UV + O3 oxidation are carried out to achieve partially reduced GO (rGO) sponges. We find that these rGO sponges can convert environmental energy to electricity via the natural evaporation of water. The generated open-circuit voltages are measured to be as high as about 0.63 V over a single piece of rGO sponges. The maximum output power and output power density are calculated to be approximately 17.30 μW and 1.74 μW cm−2, respectively. We suggest that streaming potentials, which arise from water molecule-graphene interactions, should be the underlying mechanism of water-evaporation-induced electricity generation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ambient temperatures, airflow velocities, and evaporation-areas all can seriously influence the electricity generation. Moreover, the water-evaporation-induced voltage can be easily scaled up to as high as about 2.34 V by connecting multiple samples in series. Therefore, our work supplies a potential method of converting ubiquitous environmental energy to electricity.

Abstract:A high-performance power generator has been successfully fabricated based on a superhydrophilic three-dimensional assembly of graphene oxide. The open framework of this specially designed graphene oxide assembly largely facilitated the diffusion of water molecules to produce the dissociated charged ions as free carriers. Meanwhile, its asymmetrical oxygen-containing groups enabled an ionic gradient to accelerate the directed transport of the ionic charge carriers. A high power density of ca. 1 mW cm(-2) and an energy-conversion efficiency of ca. 52% were achieved and its potential as a practical power source was evidenced by a simple pendulum-based chemical potential energy harvesting system.
Interfacial elaborating In2O3-decorated ZnO/reduced graphene oxide/ZnS heterostructure with robust internal electric field for efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Solar-driven hydrogen evolution over ZnO-ZnS heterostructures is considered as a promising strategy for sustainable-energy issues. However, the industrialization of this strategy is still constrained by suppressed carrier migration, rapid charge recombination, and the inevitable utilization of noble-metal particles. Herein, we envision a novel strategy of successfully introducing In2O3 into the ZnO-ZnS heterostructure. Benefiting from the optimized internal electric field and the charge carrier migration mode based on the direct Z-scheme, the interfacial elaborating In2O3-decorated ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ZnS heterostructure manifests smooth charge migration, suppressed electron-hole pair recombination, and increased surface active sites. More importantly, the in situ introduction of In2O3 optimizes the construction of the internal electric field, favoring directional light-triggered carrier migration. As a result, the light-induced electrons generated from the heterostructure can be efficiently employed for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Hence, this work would shed light on the in situ fabrication of noble-metal-free photocatalysts for solar-driven water splitting.
Tuning of Reduced Graphene Oxide Thin Film As an Efficient Electron Conductive Interlayer in a Proven Heterojunction Photoanode for Solar-Driven Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Although bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has shown excellent photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties and is a good candidate of photoanode materials, the solar-driven PEC water splitting performance is still remained below its full potential due to the fast recombination and sluggish charge mobility of photogenerated charge carriers. Previously, we have communicated a proven Type II staggered vanadium pentoxide (V2O5)/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode that could improve the photocurrent density. This study aimed to examine the effect of introducing an rGO thin film as an efficient electron conductive interlayer in a proven V2O5/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode, and subsequently tuning the rGO film thickness in achieving the optimum PEC performance. The resultant ternary photoanode structure of V2O5/rGO/BiVO4 was characterised by using field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Results showed that the interlayer rGO thin film arising from the sequential drop cast and electrochemical reduction of 320 mu L ultrasonicated GO solution resulted in the optimal photocurrent density of 2.1 mA/cm(2) at 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Furthermore, the chemical physics surrounding the photogenerated charge carrier transfer for heterojunction V2O5/BiVO4 was validated for the structure with and without the rGO interlayer. In particular, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to measure multiple resistances at the FTO/semiconductor, semiconductor/semiconductor and semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces. Additionally, the charge transfer (K-r) and recombination (K-r) rate constants for the heterojunction V2O5/BiVO4 with the rGO interlayer were quantified using intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). Finally, the PEC H-2 evolution rate from the ternary V2O5/rGO/BiVO4 photoanode was measured to be 32.7 mu mol/hr, which was about 3-fold higher than the bare V2O5/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode. Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a distinctive energy harvesting method that electricity can be generated from the ionic solution flowing through the interstices between packed three-dimensional graphene powders. A constructed electrokinetic nanogenerator with an effective flow area of ∼0.34 cm2can generate a large current of 91.33 nA under 10-6M NaCl solution with a flow rate of 0.4 ml min-1, corresponding to a maximum power density of 0.45μW m-2. Besides, it shows a good linear relationship between the streaming current and the flow rate, suggesting that it could be used as a self-powered micro-flowmeter. These results provide a convenient way for clean energy harvesting and show a bright future for self-powered systems.
Electric-Field-Induced Ionic Sieving at Planar Graphene Oxide Heterojunctions for Miniaturized Water Desalination.

Abstract:Layered graphene oxide membranes (GOMs) offer a unique platform for precise sieving of small ions and molecules due to controlled sub-nanometer-wide interlayer distance and versatile surface chemistry. Pristine and chemically modified GOMs effectively block organic dyes and nanoparticles, but fail to exclude smaller ions with hydrated diameters less than 9 angstrom. Toward sieving of small inorganic salt ions, a number of strategies are proposed by reducing the interlayer spacing down to merely several angstroms. However, one critical challenge for such compressed GOMs is the extremely low water flux (<0.1 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) that prevents these innovative nanomaterials from being used in real-world applications. Here, a planar heterogeneous graphene oxide membrane (PHGOM) with both nearly perfect salt rejection and high water flux is reported. Horizontal ion transport through oppositely charged GO multilayer lateral heterojunction exhibits bi-unipolar transport behavior, blocking the conduction of both cations and anions. Assisted by a forward electric field, salt concentration is depleted in the near-neutral transition area of the PHGOM. In this situation, deionized water can be extracted from the depletion zone. Following this mechanism, a high rejection rate of 97.0% for NaCl and water flux of 1529 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) at the outlet via an inverted T-shaped water extraction mode are achieved.

Abstract:By introducing the deionized water at the solid contact interface, vertical dynamic diode direct current generator with the structure of graphene/water/silicon is proposed. Water molecules between the interfaces will undergo polarization and depolarization processes to induce, accumulate and rebound charges at the solid‐liquid interface further to form a direct current power output. Harvesting various mechanical energy from the daily environment has been proposed as a promising way to power electronic devices in the era of Internet of Things. However, most of existing generators are troubled by complex surface structures to achieve higher power output because of the limitations by interfacial effects and unable to achieve direct current (DC) output in the vertical direction. Herein, by introducing the polarized water molecules at the solid contact interface, a vertical structure dynamic diode DC generator is proposed. In the process of polarization and depolarization, water molecules induce, accumulate and rebound charges at the interfaces, and form a voltage output up to 1.7 V based on a solid‐liquid‐solid structure. Furthermore, through integrating series of water molecular generators, a voltage of 4.5 V can be achieved and effectively power commercial LED. This generator has been proven to harvest mechanical energy in the vertical direction to output DC power and excellent potential for applications in distributed energy supply.

Abstract:The low-cost hydrogen (H 2 ) generation from solar energy is one of the attractive and promising methods for clean and sustainable energy. It is challenging to boost global, renewable H 2 energy mission. Until now, no catalytic system has been realized with viable efficiency and stability with reasonable manufacturing cost. Herein, we demonstrate a facile synthesis of chromium doped zinc oxide/graphene (Cr-doped ZnO@Graphene) as multicomponent photoanode using simple, inexpensive hydrothermal method. We investigated that graphene layer beneath ZnO can act in a different way, while salient features of controllable graphene concentration and appropriate Cr doping clearly displayed profound influence on photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction which is due to promoted electron transfer at interface. The detailed computational study was done by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A photoelectrochemical cell was assembled with optimized photoanode displayed 4-fold increase in photocurrent density as compared to pristine ZnO. The improved PEC performance is attributed to the synergistic effects, where the presence of Cr dopant improves the charge carrier density and enhanced electronic conductivity, and graphene has increased the carrier transport and collection efficiency. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the development of (Cr-doped ZnO@Graphene) as a highly efficient and stable photoelectrode for practical applications in solar water splitting and renewable energy conversion.

Abstract:A synchronous ion separation and electricity generation process has been developed using G-O membranes. In addition to the size effect proposed prevsiouly, the separation of ions can be attributed to the different interactions between ions and G-O membranes; the generation of electricity is due to the confinement of G-O membranes and the mobility difference of ions. Efficient energy transduction has been achieved with G-O membranes, converting magnetic, thermal and osmotic energy to electricity, distinguishing this material from other commercial semi-permeable membranes. Our study indicated that G-O membranes could find potential applications in the purification of wastewater, while producing electricity simultaneously. With G-O membranes, industrial magnetic leakage and waste heat could also be used to produce electricity, affording a superior approach for energy recovery.
