Abstract:Snow serves as a pivotal water resource in the three provinces of Northeast China (TPNC), the investigation of spatial and temporal distribution changes of snow cover is essential for the region's efficient water resource management. The Moderate Resolution Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover product has proven effective in providing detailed spatial–temporal distribution and identification of snow cover. However, its accuracy and reliability are significantly hampered by cloud obscuration. To address this issue, we have developed a novel four-step cloud removal approach, which includes Terra and Aqua combination, 5-day temporal combination, snowline method (IMS) as well as 8-pixel and 24-pixel adjacent pixel method. Results indicate that the proposed approach successfully eliminates all cloud cover, yielding a highly accurate cloud-free snow cover product with validation accuracies of 92% and 97% when using in situ snow depth measurements and cloud masking method, respectively. We investigated the spatial and temporal variations of snow cover for the TPNC during 2003–2018 with snow coverage and snow cover days (SCD) and analyzed the correlation between snow cover and climate factors. The results showed that the annual basin-averaged snow coverage increased at a rate of 1.27% yr −1 before 2009 and decreased at a rate of 1.80% yr −1 after 2009. The Mann-Kendall tests indicated that about 72% of the total area showed an increasing trend of annual SCD during 2003–2018. Conversely, 94% of the total area exhibited a decreasing trend of annual SCD for the period of 2009–2018 due to the increasing trend of temperature and decreasing trend of precipitation. Our approach shows a promising application of generating accurate cloud-free products and its potential to examine spatial–temporal variations of snow cover under climate change for other snow-covered regions globally.

Abstract:Monitoring the extent and duration of snow cover in Tianshan mountains is significant for fully utilizing water resources and understanding the regional impact of climate change.Daily MODIS snow cover data can provide a basis for large scale snow cover mapping.However,the high cloud obscuration limits its applications.This study uses a four-step approach to remove cloud from the daily data.Using improved MODIS snow cover data and DEM analyse the spatial and temporal variability of snow cover extent and duration from 2002 to 2009 in the Tianshan Mountains of China.Snow cover extent is closely related to terrain factors.The snow cover frequency as a whole becomes higher with increasing altitude.The ratio of snow cover is higher at the northwest,north and west aspect than that at the south and southeast aspect.The snow cover extent of the whole area is small from 2006 to 2008.Maximum snow cover extent increases yearly on average.The regions snow cover duration exceeds 200 days,which are mainly in the high-altitude perennial snow cover areas,and their Coefficient of Variation(COV) is low.The snow cover duration in the southern Tianshan mountains and other low-altitude areas is very short,and change substantially due to seasonal climate situations.

Abstract:Snow cover is a sensitive indicator of global climate change, and optical images are an important means for monitoring its spatiotemporal changes. Due to the high reflectivity, rapid change, and intense spatial heterogeneity of mountainous snow cover, Sentinel-2 (S2) and Landsat 8 (L8) satellite imagery with both high spatial resolution and spectral resolution have become major data sources. However, optical sensors are more susceptible to cloud cover, and the two satellite images have significant spectral differences, making it challenging to obtain snow cover beneath clouds and cloud shadows (CCSs). Based on our previously published approach for snow reconstruction on S2 images using the Google Earth Engine (GEE), this study introduces two main innovations to reconstruct snow cover: (1) combining S2 and L8 images and choosing different CCS detection methods, and (2) improving the cloud shadow detection algorithm by considering land cover types, thus further improving the mountainous-snow-monitoring ability. The Babao River Basin of the Qilian Mountains in China is chosen as the study area; 399 scenes of S2 and 35 scenes of L8 are selected to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of snow cover from September 2019 to August 2022 in GEE. The results indicate that the snow reconstruction accuracies of both images are relatively high, and the overall accuracies for S2 and L8 are 80.74% and 88.81%, respectively. According to the time-series analysis of three hydrological years, it is found that there is a marked difference in the spatial distribution of snow cover in different hydrological years within the basin, with fluctuations observed overall.

Abstract:Accurate snow phenology detection, including snow cover days (SCD), snow start date (SSD), and snow end date (SED), is increasingly important for understanding mountain hydrology such as snow heterogeneity and snowmelt seasonality. Multiple cloud‐free daily snow cover products have recently been developed in China, employing diverse retrieval algorithms and cloud‐gap‐filling methods, resulting in varying accuracy levels. However, comprehensive analysis of differences among products and their impact on snow phenology detection is lacking. This study systematically evaluates eight state‐of‐the‐art snow cover products in China, focusing on the challenging Tibetan Plateau (TP). We introduce a novel metric, the consistency‐weighted correlation coefficient (CWR), customized for SSD and SED detection, and propose product‐combining schemes like "ensemble voting" and "sensor preference" to enhance reliability. Our findings highlight the prime influence of retrieval algorithms under clear‐sky conditions on accuracy, surpassing the importance of cloud‐gap‐filling methods. Specifically, a product optimizing normalized difference snow index thresholds for diverse landcover types consistently outperforms others in detecting all three snow phenology parameters, with correlation coefficients for SCD of 0.82 and 0.69, and CWR values for SSD of 0.54 and 0.40, and for SED of 0.53 and 0.37 in both China and the TP, respectively. Moreover, our proposed scheme combining three high‐accuracy products significantly enhances snow cover identification and SCD detection, especially when the best‐performing product alone faces substantial uncertainty. These findings provide immediate, crucial implications for optimizing the use of multiple cloud‐free products to enhance snow phenology detection, ultimately advancing the applicability of derived snow parameters in mountain hydrology research.

Abstract:Accurate snow cover monitoring is greatly significant for the research of the hydrology model and regional climate variation, especially in Northeast China where forests cover almost forty percent of the total area. However, effectively monitoring snow cover under the forest canopy is still challenging with either in situ or remote sensing observations. The global SNOWMAP algorithm pertinent to the fixed normalized difference snow index (NDSI) threshold is, therefore, no longer applicable in a typical forested region of Northeast China. In order to achieve the goal of improving the accuracy of monitoring snow cover in areas with forest, utilizing MOD09GA and MOD13A1 products, a new approach of snow mapping exploits the fusion and coupling of spectral features by integrating and analyzing the normalized difference forest snow index (NDFSI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and NDSI index was developed in this study. Then, the Landsat 8 OLI images of high resolution were used to evaluate the snow-mapping precision. The experimental results indicated that the NDFSI index combined with the NDVI index showed great potentiality for extracting the snow cover distribution in forested regions. Compared with the snow distribution obtained from the Landsat 8 images, the average bias and FAR (false alarm ratio) values of snow cover mapping obtained by this algorithm are 1.23 and 13.54%, which are reduced by 1.98 and 29.36%, respectively. The overall accuracy of 81.31% is reached, which is improved by 20.19%. Thus, the snow classification scheme combining multiple spectral features from MODIS data works effectively in improving the precision of automatic snow cover mapping in typical areas with forest of Northeast China, which provides essential support and significant perspective for the next step of establishing a runoff model and rationally regulating forest water resources.

Abstract:Accurate snow cover data are critical for understanding the Earth's climate system, and exploring hydrological processes and regional water resource management over High Mountain Asia (HMA). However, satellite-based remote sensing observations of snow cover have inevitable data gaps originating from cloud cover, sensor, orbital limitations and other factors. Here an effective cloud-gap-filled (CGF) method was developed to fully fill the data gaps in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference snow index (NDSI) product. The CGF method combines the respective strengths of the cubic spline interpolation method and the spatio-temporal weighted method for generating the CGF Terra-Aqua MODIS NDSI product over HMA from 2000 to 2021. Based on the validation results of in situ snow-depth observations, the CGF NDSI product achieves a high range overall accuracy (OA) of 93.54–98.08%, a low range underestimation error (MU) of 0.15–3.49% and an acceptable range overestimation error (MO) of 0.84–5.77%. Based on the validation results of high-resolution Landsat images, this product achieves the OA of 88.52–92.40%, the omission error (OE) of 1.42–10.28% and the commission error (CE) of 5.97–17.58%. The CGF MODIS NDSI product can provide scientific support for eco-environment sustainable management in the high mountain region.

Abstract:Mountain snowpacks play important roles in water resource and ecological system. However, existing snow depth products show great uncertainties across the Tianshan Mountains, Central Asia. This study evaluated and compared four snow depth datasets over the Tianshan Mountains, including snow depth datasets from ERA5, ERA5‐Land, passive microwave, as well as a dynamically downscaled simulation by Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The snow depth was evaluated against in situ observations while the snow cover extent was evaluated by interactive multisensor snow and ice mapping system (IMS) snow cover. Furthermore, the snow‐related metrics, such as annual mean snow depth and snow cover days, were compared among the four datasets. The results showed that the spatial patterns of snow‐related metrics were relatively consistent among datasets, although discrepancies existed in magnitude. Additionally, the temporal variations in snow‐related metrics depended on the dataset employed. The simulated snow depth from WRF got the lowest bias in daily snow depth value against the in situ observations (mean bias = 0.12 cm, root mean square error = 2.08 cm), additionally, it had the best performance in classifying correct snow grids compared with IMS (probability of detection = 0.766). It also outperformed in annual mean snow depth and snow cover days by 47.2 and 13.3% compared with ERA5‐Land snow depth. This study highlights the confidence in characterizing both the spatial pattern and temporal variations of snow depth products based on WRF model simulation. The Tianshan Mountains are located in the region where hosts the important and vulnerable water tower units. Snow depth and snow cover extent were evaluated from remote sensing, reanalysis, and model simulation. Abstract:Taking three snow seasons from November 1 to March 31 of year 2002 to 2005 in northern Xinjiang, China as an example, this study develops a new daily snow cover product (500 m) through combining MODIS daily snow cover data and AMSR-E daily snow water equivalent (SWE) data. By taking advantage of both high spatial resolution of optical data and cloud transparency of passive microwave data, the new daily snow cover product greatly complements the deficiency of MODIS product when cloud cover is present especially for snow cover product on a daily basis and effectively improves daily snow detection accuracy. In our example, the daily snow agreement of the new product with the in situ measurements at 20 stations is 75.4%, which is much higher than the 33.7% of the MODIS daily product in all weather conditions, even a little higher than the 71% of the MODIS 8-day product (cloud cover of ~5%). Our results also indicate that i) AMSR-E daily SWE imagery generally agrees with MOD10A1 data in detecting snow cover, with overall agreement of 93.4% and snow agreement of 96.6% in the study area; ii) AMSR-E daily SWE imagery underestimates the snow covered area (SCA) due to its coarse spatial resolution; iii) The new snow cover product can better and effectively capture daily SCA dynamics during the snow seasons, which plays a significant role in reduction, mitigation, and prevention of snow-caused disasters in pastoral areas.

Monitoring Recent Changes in Snow Cover in Central Asia Using Improved MODIS Snow-Cover Products

Abstract:Snow cover plays an important role in the fields of climatology and cryospheric science. Remotely-sensed data have been proven to be effective in monitoring snow covers. Improved methods to process the 8-day snow-cover products derived from MODIS Terra/Aqua data can dramatically increase the data quality and reduce noise. A five-step algorithm for removing cloud effects was designed to improve the quality of MODIS snow products, and the overall accuracy of the MODIS snow data without cloud (defined as cloud-free snow-cover dataset) was enhanced by more than 90% based on direct and indirect validation methods. The snow-cover frequency (SCF) and snow-cover rate (SCR) of Central Asia were analyzed from 2000 to 2015 using trend analysis and empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs). Over the plain regions, the SCF displayed a significant north-south declining trend with a rate of 0.03 per degree of latitude, and the SCR showed a similar north-south gradient. In the mountainous areas, the SCF significantly increased with altitude by 0.12 per kilometer. Within the study area, the SCF in 65% of the study area experienced an increasing trend, but only 4.3% of the SCF-increasing pixels passed a significance test. The remaining 35% of the area underwent a decreasing trend of SCF, but only 5.2% of the SCF-decreasing pixels passed a significance test. For the entire Central Asia, the inter-annual variations of snow-cover presented a slight and insignificant increase trend from 2000 to 2015. However, the change trends of snow cover are different between the plain and mountainous regions. That is, the annual mean SCR in the plain areas displayed an increasing trend, but a decreasing trend was found in the mountainous areas.
Assessment of the Daily Cloud-Free MODIS Snow-Cover Product for Monitoring the Snow-Cover Phenology over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Snow cover plays a crucial role in surface hydrology and energy balance, especially in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). This study used 12 years (2000–2011) of ground-observed snow depth at 87 meteorological stations to assess and verify the accuracy of the daily cloud-free snow-cover product from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) over the QTP. On average, the daily cloud-free MODIS snow-cover product correctly identified the occurrence of snow cover with an accuracy of 90.74%, ranging from 54.39% to 99.07% among the 87 sites. The MODIS-derived data have large uncertainties in identifying the snow-cover phenology on the threshold of FSC >0 and FSC >50% (FSC, fractional snow cover). However, the MODIS-derived data can capture the interannual variability of the snow-cover phenology as compared with in situ observations. This study highlights the uncertainties in the daily snow-free MODIS snow-cover product to reflect snow-cover phenology over the QTP.

The Evaluation of Snow Depth Simulated by Different Land Surface Models in China Based on Station Observations

Abstract:Snow plays an important role in catastrophic weather, climate change, and water recycling. In order to analyze the ability of different land surface models to simulate snow depth in China, we used atmospheric forcing data from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) to drive the CLM3.5 (the Community Land Model version 3.5), Noah (NCEP, OSU, Air Force and Office of Hydrology Land Surface Model), and Noah-MP (the community Noah land surface model with multi-parameterization options) land surface models. We also used 2380 daily snow-depth site observations of CMA to analyze the simulation effects of different models on the snow depth in China and different regions during the periods of snow accumulation and snowmelt from 2015 to 2019. The results show that CLM3.5, Noah, and Noah-MP can simulate the spatial distribution of the snow depth in China, but there are some differences between the models. In particular, the snow depth and snow cover simulated by CLM3.5 are lower than those simulated by Noah and Noah-MP in Northwest China and the Tibetan Plateau. From the overall quantitative assessment results for China, the snow depth simulated by CLM3.5 is underestimated, while that simulated by Noah is overestimated. Noah-MP has the best overall performance; for example, the biases of the three models during the snow-accumulation periods are −0.22 cm, 0.27 cm, and 0.15 cm, respectively. Furthermore, the three models perform differently in the three snowpack regions of Northeast China, Northwest China, and the Tibetan Plateau; Noah-MP has the best snow-depth performance in Northeast China, while CLM3.5 has the best snow-depth performance in the Tibetan Plateau region. Noah-MP performs best in the snow-accumulation period, and Noah performs best in the snowmelt period for Northwest China. In conclusion, no single model can perform optimally for snow simulations in different regions of China and at different times of the year, and the multi-model integration of snow may be an effective way to obtain high-quality snow simulation results. So this study provides some scientific references for the spatiotemporal evolution of snow in the context of climate change, monitoring and analysis of snow, the study of land surface models for snow, and the sustainable development and utilization of snow resources in China and other regions.

Abstract:Reliable cloud masks in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover products have a high potential to improve the retrieval of snow properties. However, cloud–snow confusion is a popular problem in MODIS snow cover products, especially in boreal forest areas. A large amount of forest snow is misclassified as clouds because of the low normalized difference snow index (NDSI), and excessive cloud masks limit the application of snow products. In addition, ice clouds are easily misclassified as snow due to their similar spectral characteristics, which leads to snow commission errors. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluated the cloud–snow confusion in Northeast China and found that snow-covered forests and transition zones from snow-covered to snow-free areas are prone to being misclassified as clouds, while clouds are less likely to be misclassified as snow. A temporal-sequence cloud–snow-distinguishing algorithm based on the high-frequency observation characteristics of the Himawarri-8 geostationary meteorological satellite is proposed. In the temporal-sequence images acquired from that satellite, the NDSI variance in cloud pixels should be greater than that of snow because clouds vary over time, while snow is relatively stable. In the MODIS snow cover products, the cloud pixels with NDSI variance lower than a threshold are identified as cloud-free areas and attributed their raw NDSI value, while the snow pixels with NDSI variance greater than the threshold are marked as clouds. We applied this method to MOD10A1 C6 in Northeast China. The results showed that the excessive cloud masks were greatly eliminated, and the new cloud mask was in good agreement with the real cloud distribution. At the same time, some possible ice clouds which had been misclassified as snow for their spectral characteristics similar to those of snow were identified correctly.

A New Retrieval Algorithm of Fractional Snow over the Tibetan Plateau Derived from AVH09C1

Abstract:Snow cover products are primarily derived from the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) datasets. MODIS achieves both snow/non-snow discrimination and snow cover fractional retrieval, while early AVHRR-based snow cover products only focused on snow/non-snow discrimination. The AVHRR Climate Data Record (AVHRR-CDR) provides a nearly 40-year global dataset that has the potential to fill the gap in long-term snow cover fractional monitoring. Our study selects the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau as the experimental area, utilizing AVHRR-CDR surface reflectance data (AVH09C1) and calibrating with the MODIS snow product MOD10A1. The snow cover percentage retrieval from the AVHRR dataset is performed using Surface Reflectance at 0.64 μm (SR1) and Surface Reflectance at 0.86 μm (SR2), along with a simulated Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) model. Also, in order to detect the effects of land-cover type and topography on snow inversion, we tested the accuracy of the algorithm with and without these influences, respectively (vanilla algorithm and improved algorithm). The accuracy of the AVHRR snow cover percentage data product is evaluated using MOD10A1, ground snow-depth measurements and ERA5. The results indicate that the logic model based on NDSI has the best fitting effect, with R-square and RMSE values of 0.83 and 0.10, respectively. Meanwhile, the accuracy was improved after taking into account the effects of land-cover type and topography. The model is validated using MOD10A1 snow-covered areas, showing snow cover area differences of less than 4% across 6 temporal phases. The improved algorithm results in better consistency with MOD10A1 than with the vanilla algorithm. Moreover, the RMSE reaches greater levels when the elevation is below 2000 m or above 6000 m and is lower when the slope is between 16° and 20°. Using ground snow-depth measurements as ground truth, the multi-year recall rates are mostly above 0.7, with an average recall rate of 0.81. The results also show a high degree of consistency with ERA5. The validation results demonstrate that the AVHRR snow cover percentage remote sensing product proposed in this study exhibits high accuracy in the Tibetan Plateau region, also demonstrating that land-cover type and topographic factors are important to the algorithm. Our study lays the foundation for a global snow cover percentage product based on AVHRR-CDR and furthermore lays a basic work for generating a long-term AVHRR-MODIS fractional snow cover dataset.

Abstract:Traditional optical remote sensing data have been widely used for snow cover detection and monitoring. However, they are limited to daytime detection and often suffer from large data gaps due to frequent cloud obscuration. This is in particular a serious challenge for high-latitude and polar regions where long nights prevail during the winter. Nighttime light sensors have a strong capability of sensing the low-level reflected moonlight. They potentially provide a new way to detect snow cover. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the moonlight intensity for snow detection and developed a Minimum Error Thresholding (MET) algorithm to detect snow cover from the data collected by Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (S-NPP VIIRS) satellite data. For the two case study sites, Abisko in the sub-Arctic zone and the Tibetan Plateau, our analysis results suggest that the moonlight provides sufficient illumination to map snow cover for approximately 10 days in a lunar month. Our nighttime snow cover detection method was quantitatively evaluated by comparing our S-NPP VIIRS DNB snow cover estimates with in situ station observations, Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) snow cover products, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover products over Abisko region and the Tibetan Plateau during the 2017–2018 snow season. The overall accuracy of S-NPP VIIRS snow cover estimates was approximately 80.3% in Abisko region and 76.7% in the Tibetan Plateau. The data gaps in our S-NPP VIIRS DNB snow cover estimates were smaller than those of the MODIS snow cover products by 22.1% and 5.1% over Abisko region and the Tibetan Plateau, respectively. Further, we found that nearly 92.8% and 74.6% of data gaps in the MODIS snow-cover product can be filled up by incorporating our S-NPP VIIRS DNB snow cover estimates in Abisko region and the Tibetan Plateau. The total accuracy of daily MODIS snow cover products can be improved to 91.0% in the Tibetan Plateau. Our results indicate that S-NPP VIIRS DNB nighttime satellite data can provide reliable snow products over polar regions and mid-latitude mountainous areas, which is complementary to the standard MODIS snow cover products.

Abstract:<p>MODIS fractional (FSC) and binary (BSC) snow-cover data are important for obtaining accurate spatiotemporal snow-cover information for the Tibetan Plateau (TP) where rapid warming is closely related to snow-cover changes. However, FSC and BSC data are no longer provided in the newly released version (v6) of the MODIS snow cover product, having been replaced with normalized difference snow index (NDSI) data. Recent studies have observed clearly lower accuracy of MODIS snow cover data on the TP than in other areas, possibly implying that there are strong scaling effects due to the complex terrain and land cover which are not well understood. A total of 353 Landsat-8 scenes covering most parts of the TP are used to establish a new empirical relationship between FSC and MODIS NDSI for FSC estimation and a new NDSI threshold for BSC estimation. The results indicate that the new regression model (mean root-mean-squared-deviation (RMSD): 0.22) has a better FSC estimation accuracy than the previously used global reference equation (mean RMSD: 0.24) and that the new NDSI threshold of 0.29 (mean Cohen's Kappa (CK): 0.49) outperforms the global reference NDSI threshold of 0.4 (mean CK: 0.40) in BSC estimation. The relatively low accuracy could be due to an enhanced scaling effect. The 30-m Landsat-8 NDSI data are upscaled to 500-m (MODIS) to analyze the scaling effects on FSC and BSC estimates made using MODIS NDSI. We find that the methods using MODIS NDSI have much lower estimation accuracy, for both FSC and BSC, compared with those using upscaled Landsat-8 NDSI. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) test which considers 512 combinations of aspect, slope and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) further demonstrates that the enhanced scaling effects are mainly caused by terrain factors (i.e. aspect and slope). The optimal NDSI threshold for estimating BSC generally increases with slope and decreases as the aspect varies from the southeast to northwest. This study has important implications for the optimal use of MODIS NDSI snow cover data on the TP and highlights the importance of developing more advanced methods which take more factors into account.</p>

Abstract:Accurate long-term daily cloud-gap-filled fractional snow cover products are essential for climate change and snow hydrological studies in the Asian Water Tower (AWT) region, but existing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover products are not sufficient. In this study, the multiple-endmember spectral mixture analysis algorithm based on automatic endmember extraction (MESMA-AGE) and the multistep spatiotemporal interpolation algorithm (MSTI) are used to produce the MODIS daily cloud-gap-filled fractional snow cover product over the AWT region (AWT MODIS FSC). The AWT MODIS FSC products have a spatial resolution of 0.005° and span from 2000 to 2022. The 2745 scenes of Landsat-8 images are used for the areal-scale accuracy assessment. The fractional snow cover accuracy metrics, including the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), are 0.80, 0.16 and 0.10, respectively. The binarized identification accuracy metrics, including overall accuracy (OA), producer's accuracy (PA) and user's accuracy (UA), are 95.17 %, 97.34 % and 97.59 %, respectively. Snow depth data observed at 175 meteorological stations are used to evaluate accuracy at the point scale, yielding the following accuracy metrics: an OA of 93.26 %, a PA of 84.41 %, a UA of 82.14 % and a Cohen kappa (CK) value of 0.79. Snow depth observations from meteorological stations are also used to assess the fractional snow cover resulting from different weather conditions, with an OA of 95.36 % (88.96 %), a PA of 87.75 % (82.26 %), a UA of 86.86 % (78.86 %) and a CK of 0.84 (0.72) under the MODIS clear-sky observations (spatiotemporal reconstruction based on the MSTI algorithm). The AWT MODIS FSC product can provide quantitative spatial distribution information on snowpacks for mountain hydrological models, land surface models and numerical weather prediction in the Asian Water Tower region. Abstract:It shows that analysis of snow conditions in Tibet region by NDSI based on MODIS data and fundamental spatial information data is feasible. The spatial and spectral resolution of MODIS data is better than that of AVHRR; it will be more advantageous using MODIS data to analyze snow conditions or for other monitorings. This research has indicated that MODIS data can be used to analyse snow conditions and to monitor snow disaster in a large area.

Abstract:Seasonal snow cover is closely related to regional climate and hydrological processes. In this study, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow cover products from 2001 to 2018 were applied to analyze the snow cover variation in northern Xinjiang, China. As cloud obscuration causes significant spatiotemporal discontinuities in the binary snow cover extent (SCE), we propose a conditional probability interpolation method based on a space-time cube (STCPI) to remove clouds completely after combining Terra and Aqua data. First, the conditional probability that the central pixel and every neighboring pixel in a space-time cube of 5 × 5 × 5 with the same snow condition is counted. Then the snow probability of the cloud pixels reclassified as snow is calculated based on the space-time cube. Finally, the snow condition of the cloud pixels can be recovered by snow probability. The validation experiments with the cloud assumption indicate that STCPI can remove clouds completely and achieve an overall accuracy of 97.44% under different cloud fractions. The generated daily cloud-free MODIS SCE products have a high agreement with the Landsat–8 OLI image, for which the overall accuracy is 90.34%. The snow cover variation in northern Xinjiang, China, from 2001 to 2018 was investigated based on the snow cover area (SCA) and snow cover days (SCD). The results show that the interannual change of SCA gradually decreases as the elevation increases, and the SCD and elevation have a positive correlation. Furthermore, the interannual SCD variation shows that the area of increase is higher than that of decrease during the 18 years.

Abstract:In this study, MODIS/Terra 8-day snow cover product (MOD10A2) was used to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of snow cover in northeast China for the period 2002-2011. For those MOD10A2 data with cloud cover more than 10%, the combined MOD10A2 and MYD10A2 (MODIS/Aqua) snow cover products were used. The results indicated that the snow cover area was greatest at 63% in January. The greatest extent and duration of snow cover were observed in 2010, and the opposite extremes occurred in 2008. The snow cover frequency (SCF) was relatively high in high-altitude areas, such as the Hulun Buir Plateau, the northern Da Hinggan Mountains, and the eastern Changbai Mountains; by contrast, the SCF was low in the Liaodong Peninsula. Trends in the snow cover frequencies were essentially opposite to the spatial distribution of the snow cover; the SCF decreased in areas with more snow and increased in areas with less snow. There was a clear variation in the snow accumulation, with lower temperatures in December, January, and February, where a negative relationship existed between the SCF and monthly average temperature below 0 degrees C. Abstract:Abstract. Snow cover is one of the most active elements of the cryosphere and plays an important role in the surface radiation budget and water balance. Optical satellite remote sensing has become an important tool for snow identification and monitoring. The Sentinel-2 A/B satellite has become an important data source for snow cover extraction because of its high radiation resolution, which reduces the problem of snow/ice saturation in remote sensing observations. The normalized differential snow cover index (NDSI) and the snow cover index considering the forest cover area (NDFSI) are important methods for snow cover extraction, but due to the strong spatial heterogeneity and fast change speed of snow cover in mountainous areas, using the classical fixed threshold method to extract snow cover will result in a large omission error. In this paper, a dynamic threshold method is constructed by synthesizing the effects of the type of snow cover period, aspect and snow underlying land coverage type on the snow cover NDSI/NDFSI. Compared with the high-resolution GF-2 snow map results, the dynamic threshold method has higher accuracy in extracting snow cover, and the overall classification accuracy, omission error, commission error and Kappa coefficient are 97.70%, 0.20%, 11.17% and 0.93 respectively. The dynamic threshold method is used to extract snow cover in a snow cover period in the Babao River Basin. The snow cover rate in the basin fluctuates greatly with time, and the spatial distribution of snow cover is uneven, with more snow cover in mountainous areas and rapid changes in snow cover in river valleys.
