Abstract:Pharmacokinetic, bacteriological and clinical studies of ceftizoxime (CZX) were performed in neonates. 1. Serum concentrations and urinary excretion of CZX were investigated in 12 neonates ranging ages from 1 to 27 days (gestational age, 35-41 weeks; birth weight, 2,150-4,030 g) and 2 infants ranging ages from 55 to 57 days (gestational age, 39-40 weeks; birth weight, 2,320-2,650 g). Each of the subjects was given a single intravenous dose of 20 mg/kg by one shot. Serum concentrations of CZX in the neonates were 24.9-53.7 micrograms/ml at 1/4 hour after intravenous injection, with an average of 40.6 +/- 7.6 micrograms/ml. Serum half-lives of CZX were 1.32-4.75 hours and averaged 2.60 +/- 1.06 hours. Serum concentrations ranged from 2.01 to 14.6 micrograms/ml at 6 hours after injection with an average of 7.70 +/- 3.89 micrograms/ml. In the 2 infants, serum concentrations were 42.0 and 46.2 micrograms/ml at 1/4 hour (average: 44.1 +/- 3.0 micrograms/ml), and 2.91 and 5.04 micrograms/ml at 6 hours after injection (average: 3.98 +/- 1.51 micrograms/ml). Half-lives were 1.54 hours in 1 infant and 1.93 hours in the other (average: 1.74 +/- 0.28 hours). Furthermore, 6-hour urinary recovery rates were 28.5-71.7% (average: 49.3 +/- 12.8%) in the neonates and 42.1-55.5% (average: 48.8 +/- 9.5%) in the infants. The above results suggest that the following 3 points are accepted; 1) peak serum concentrations (at 1/4 hour) in neonates were similar to those in infants and older children irrespective of age (days after birth). 2) Serum half-lives of CZX in neonates shortly after birth were 4 or 5 times longer than those in older children, but decreased rapidly with the advance of day-ages. The half-life in neonates of 2 weeks of age or so became shorter to about twice the normal value in infants. Furthermore, half-lives of the drug in those at an age of the first half of infancy were similar to those in older children. 3) The urinary excretion rates tended to be somewhat low with neonates soon after birth, but became very similar to those in infants and older children at a relatively early stage.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:Background: Mental health and health-related quality of life (QOL) are strictly related. Scientific interest in student’s mental health experiences has been increasing in the last years due to their influence on students’ learning processes and academic performance. Aim: Assess the association between quality of life, mental health and Academic performance among adolescent students. Subjects & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on adolescent student’s schools (prep and secondary schools) during the academic year 2022-2023, at Mansoura city, Dakhlia Governorate. Sample: A convenience sample of 665 students over a period of three months was included. Tools: Four tools were used to collect data: Part I: Characteristics of studied adolescent students Part II: Academic quality of life student scale Part III: Mental health symptom Checklist-90. Part IV: Academic Performance Rating Scale. Results: 74% of studied students had low quality of life, while 26% had high quality and 50.9% of studied students had low mental health and 23.3% of them had moderate mental health. Also, 60% of studied students had high academic performance, while 20.3% of them had low academic performance. Conclusion: There was high negative correlation between students' Academic performance and mental health Also, high negative correlation between students' Mental health and quality of life While there was high positive relation between students' Quality of life and Academic performance Recommendation:Health education and promotion of quality of life should be integrated into the educational strategies and policies of all educational centers.
Mental health, quality of life, and nutritional status of adolescents in Dhaka, Bangladesh: Comparison between an urban slum and a non-slum area

Abstract:This study aims to clarify the quality of life (QOL), mental health, and nutritional status of adolescents in Dhaka city, Bangladesh by comparing non-slum areas and slums, and to find the factors associated with their mental health problems. A sample of 187 boys and 137 girls from non-slum areas, and 157 boys and 121 girls from slums, between 11-18 years old were interviewed with a questionnaire consisting of a Bangla translation of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument (WHOQOL-BREF), Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ), Youth Self-Report (YSR) and other questions. The height and weight of the respondents were measured. All significant differences in demographic characteristics, anthropometric measures, and WHOQOL-BREF were found to reflect worse conditions in slum than in non-slum areas. Contrarily, all differences in SRQ and YSR were worse in non-slum areas for both genders, except that the "conduct problems" score for YSR was worse for slum boys. Mental states were mainly associated with school enrollment and working status. Worse physical environment and QOL were found in slums, along with gender and area specific mental health difficulties. The results suggest gender specific needs and a requirement for area sensitive countermeasures.

Impact of health education on health-related quality of life among elderly persons: results from a community-based intervention study in rural Bangladesh

Abstract:This study examines the change in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among (> or =60 years) elderly persons as a result of health education intervention. A community-based intervention study was performed in eight randomly selected villages (INTERVENTION: n = 4;CONTROL: n = 4) in rural Bangladesh. A total of 1135 elderly persons was selected for this study. The analyses include 839 participants (INTERVENTION: n = 425;CONTROL: n = 414) who participated in both baseline and post-intervention surveys. Participants in the intervention area were further stratified into compliant (n = 315) and non-compliant (n = 110) groups based on the reported compliance to the intervention activities. The intervention includes, for example, physical activity, advice on healthy food intake and other aspects of management. To create an enabling environment, social awareness was provided by means of information about the contribution of and challenges faced by elderly persons at home and the community, including information about elderly persons' health and health care. The intervention activities were provided to the elderly persons, caregivers, household members and community people for 15 months. The HRQoL was assessed using a multi-dimensional generic instrument designed for elderly persons. Multivariate analyses revealed that in the non-compliant group the probabilities of increased scores were less likely in overall HRQoL (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.32-0.82). Among the CONTROL group, increased scores were less likely in the physical (OR 73, 95% CI 0.54-0.99), social (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.27-0.50), spiritual (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.34-0.94), environment (OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.26-0.49) dimensions and overall HRQoL (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.32-0.59) (adjusted for age, sex, literacy, marital status and economic status). This study concludes that provision of community-based health education intervention might be a potential public health initiative to enhance the HRQoL in old age.

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life (QOL) and its influencing factors among healthcare college students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among healthcare students at King Saud University. A modified version of the Arabic World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire, including 25 questions, was used to assess students' QOL. Data were collected through an online survey and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Descriptive and regression statistics were used. Results: A total of 547 healthcare students completed the questionnaire during the data collection period. Of all the students, 39.7% were from applied medical college, 62.5% were females, 98.9% were single, and 91.8% were non-smokers. Regarding academic status, 58.3% did not participate in any extracurricular activity, 42.6% had an academic advisor, and 80.4% had a grade point average (GPA) higher than 4.1. The average QOL score across all domains was moderately good (60.30 ± 16.0), whereas the physical domain showed the poorest score (46.89 ± 14.8) while the environmental domain had the greatest score (68.04 ± 20.6). The environmental domain was the only domain that showed significant differences between healthcare colleges (p < 0.001). Moreover, students who were male (p = 0.009), non-smokers (p = 0.023), reported living with family/friends (p = 0.031), and from families with high monthly income (p < 0.001) had significantly higher environmental QOL scores than their counterparts. Conclusions: The study found that healthcare students had moderately good mean QOL scores. The environmental domain was the only QOL domain that showed significant differences between healthcare colleges with the greatest score among medical college students. Gender, smoking status, residence status, and family monthly income were found to have a strong association with students' environmental QOL scores. Institutions need to focus on the regular measurement of students' QOL, which facilitates implementing strategies that can promote their overall QOL and subsequently positively impact their performance academically and practically.

Abstract:Background: The World Health Organization define quality of life (QoL) as "the individual's perception of their position in life, within the context of the culture and value systems in which they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns’’. This study, focuses on the physical, and mental aspects of Afghan school adolescents' quality of life. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study involving 545 adolescents was carried out in Herat province, Afghanistan. The participants were selected from 10 public primary, secondary, and high schools, which were randomly chosen from a pool of 86 schools registered with the Herat Education Department. Results: The quality of life of almost half of the participants was poor on the physical component score (49.2%). Two-thirds of the participants had poor quality of life on the mental component score (66.8%). Multiple regression indicated that middle-income economic status (AOR=2.289, p=0.022), and low-income economic status (AOR=1.550, p=0.044) were significantly associated with physical component score of quality of life. It indicated that place of residency (AOR=1.620, p=0.040) was significantly associated with physical component score of quality of life. Conclusion: This study found that QoL of school students are low in both the physical and mental components. It is important to identify children and adolescents who are at risk of developing mental health problems at an early age. To help young people who are struggling with mental health issues and their access to medical treatments, targeted early preventative and intervention are required.

Abstract:Using the hierarchy picture of the fractional quantum Hall effect, we study the the ground state periodicity of a finite size quantum Hall droplet in a quantum Hall fluid of a different filling factor. The droplet edge charge is periodically modulated with flux through the droplet and will lead to a periodic variation in the conductance of a nearby point contact, such as occurs in some quantum Hall interferometers. Our model is consistent with experiment and predicts that superperiods can be observed in geometries where no interfering trajectories occur. The model may also provide an experimentally feasible method of detecting elusive neutral modes and otherwise obtaining information about the microscopic edge structure in fractional quantum Hall states.

Abstract:Background: Adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth in their transition from childhood to adulthood, affecting health outcomes and well-being. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a useful indicator of health outcomes, assessed in the current study along with associated determinants. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 634 randomly selected adolescents from 13 randomly selected schools in Gharwal division, Uttarakhand, India, from August 2019 to September 2020. The students studying in the 8th-11th standard and those providing assent and consent from their parents were included in the study. They were screened using the short version of the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire. Along with physical activity and fitness assessment, the Global School-based Student Health Survey questionnaire was administered. The transformed HRQoL domain scores were calculated using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. A univariate and multivariable linear regression model was applied to identify the determinants of HRQoL using SPSS version 23. Results: The study included 324 (51.1%) boys and 310 (48.9%) girls. The mean age of the students was 14.4±1.4 years. The highest mean score was 72.3±21.0 for the social relationship domain and the lowest was 55.6±15.0 for the physical domain. The age, parents using any form of tobacco, a history of ever-use of alcohol and physical fitness were significantly associated with HRQoL domain scores. The non-dominant back stretch test was also significantly associated (Beta coefficient; SE, P-value) with physical (-4.1; 1.4, 0.002), psychosocial (-3.9; 1.5, 0.010) and environmental (-3.5; 1.4, 0.014) domain scores. Conclusion: All domains of HRQoL need to be improved and should address the psychological, social, and mental well-being of adolescents. Physical activity and fitness of students emerged as a strong modifiable predictor affecting almost all the domains of HRQoL, warranting its promotion in schools and the promotion of healthy behavior among parents and adolescents.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to identify the social determinants of mental health among undergraduate students in Bangladesh, a developing nation in South Asia. Our goal is to identify the broader social determinants of mental health among this population, study the manifestation of these determinants in their day-to-day life, and explore the feasibility of self-monitoring tools in helping them identify the specific factors or relationships that impact their mental health. Methods: We conducted a 21-day study with 38 undergraduate students from seven universities in Bangladesh. We conducted two semi-structured interviews: one pre-study and one post-study. During the 21-day study, participants used an Android application to self-report and self-monitor their mood after each phone conversation. The app prompted participants to report their mood after each phone conversation and provided graphs and charts so that participants could independently review their mood and conversation patterns. Results: Our results show that academics, family, job and economic condition, romantic relationships, and religion are the major social determinants of mental health among undergraduate students in Bangladesh. Our app helped the participants pinpoint the specific issues related to these factors as participants could review the pattern of their moods and emotions from past conversation history. Although our app does not provide any explicit recommendation, participants took certain steps on their own to improve their mental health (e.g., reduced the frequency of communication with certain persons). Conclusions: Overall, the findings from this study would provide better insights for the researchers to design better solutions to help the younger population from this part of the world.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aim Social media is undeniably more accessible and more appreciated today. It is undoubtedly one of the most crucial instruments for student communication. Mental health status can also meaningfully influence the students at the higher levels of the educational institutions. This study aims to evaluate the social media usage of university students and its impact on academic performance and mental health. Methods To examine under confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) several scale measurements were confirmed by justifying the validity and reliability of several necessary indices and structural equation model. The mediation analysis was also estimated to evaluate the students' Social media addiction (employed Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale) under maximum likelihood estimation with 2000 bootstrapping and 95% bias‐corrected bootstrap confidence intervals. Results This study shows that the usage of social media significantly improves academic performance on psychological well‐being, with a Comparative Fit Index of 0.921 and an RMSEA of 0.06 indicating a good fit of the CFA model. Finally, we exhibit a strong statistically significant positive impact of social media usage on academic success, and as supporting the hypothesis, the study observed a positive mediating role of mental health between social media addiction and academic performance. Conclusion The present research investigations produced unique results, that is, online social media enhances mental health and mediates the link between social media addiction and academic performance in Bangladeshi students. This finding also add to the empirical database on social media usage and have significant theoretical and practical ramifications.

Abstract:During the past decade, advances in nutritional therapy, along with development of long-term hemodialysis therapy and renal transplantation, have added immeasurably to the possibilities of treatment for chronic uremia. Of the three methods, only nutritional therapy is applicable in every case. If the patient is able to ingest a diet containing adequate essential amino acids, 1,800 to 3,500 kcal, and essential vitamins and minerals, lessening of uremic symptoms and a positive nitrogen balance often ensue. Similar attention to the protein, calorie, mineral, and vitamin content of the diet will benefit patients with the nephrotic syndrome or acute renal failure.

Abstract:Abstract Common mental health problems are regarded as public health concerns and can contribute to risky behaviors such as suicide among university students in extreme cases. However, there is a lack of studies concerning such issues in Bangladesh. The present study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the prevalence and associated risk predictors of depression, anxiety, and stress among Bangladeshi university students. The sample comprised 590 undergraduates attending Jahangirnagar University (Dhaka, Bangladesh) who completed an offline survey including sociodemographic questions, behavioral variables, and the 21-item Bangla Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (BDASS-21). The prevalence of moderate to the extremely severe levels of depression, anxiety, and stress was 52.2%, 58.1%, and 24.9%, respectively. There were no significant gender differences in depression, anxiety, and stress. Risk factors for depression included coming from a lower class family, being a cigarette smoker, and engaging in less physical exercise. Risk factors for anxiety and stress included being engaged in a relationship. The findings need to be further replicated among other Bangladeshi university students to help in the development of better intervention programs and appropriate support services targeting this vulnerable group including a focus of suicide prevention and awareness.

Abstract:Abstract Background This study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) (physical, functional, emotional, social, spiritual) and psychological (anxiety and depression) well-being and their associations with patient characteristics among patients with metastatic cancer in Bangladesh. Methods A convenience sample of 386 Bangladeshi patients with stage IV solid cancers was recruited from a palliative care outpatient department and an inpatient palliative center. Dependent variables included the physical, functional, emotional, social, and overall scores of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) scale, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-SP) scale, the anxiety, depression, and overall scores of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS) scale. Linear regressions examined the association between dependent variables and patient characteristics. Results A substantial proportion of Bangladeshi patients reported anxiety (59% of outpatients and 55% of inpatients) and depression (60% of outpatients and 73% of inpatients) symptoms. Generally, greater financial difficulty and symptom burden scores were associated with worse health outcomes. Older patients reported poorer functional and spiritual well-being but better anxiety scores. Females reported worse anxiety and depressive symptoms and physical well-being but better spiritual outcomes. Conclusions Additional efforts must be directed at improving the HRQOL of patients with metastatic cancer in Bangladesh. Furthermore, assistance should be made more accessible to vulnerable groups, including women, the elderly, and those with financial difficulty.

PurposeTo comprehensively assess the quality of life (QoL) of Egyptian university students.DesignCross-sectional online study.SettingOnline settings of university students from August to October 2023.SubjectsUniversity students aged 18-25 from various institutions in Egypt.MeasuresPhysical, psychological, social, and environmental domains of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 27.0. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to detect significant associations while Spearman correlation was used for correlation analysis.ResultsA total of 1930 Egyptian university students were included. Students showed outperformance in the psychological health and social relationships domains, with medians of 58 ± 20.8 and 58 ± 25, respectively, compared to physical health with a median of 46 ± 17.8 and environmental health with a median score of 16.6 ± 21.9. Non-medical students reported higher QoL scores, particularly in physical, psychological, and social domains, compared to their medical counterparts (P-values <0.001, 0.007, and 0.002, respectively). No significant differences were observed between genders in any of the domains. Academic performance satisfaction significantly correlated with higher QoL scores across all domains (P < 0.001).ConclusionsThis multi-center study sheds light on diverse aspects influencing QoL of Egyptian university students. The findings underscore the importance of addressing academic stressors, promoting health behaviors, and tailoring interventions based on students' academic backgrounds with larger and more representative samples.

Abstract:Introduction: School children in the developing countries are susceptible to nutrition related health problems due to demographic and socio-economic factors, as well as limited access to food. Since BMI is a common proxy measure used to evaluate nutritional status, the aim of this study was to investigate the BMI categories in school-aged children in Dhaka, Bangladesh.Methods: A cross sectional study of 155 children, aged 6-12 years was conducted at Jahangirnagar University School in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The data collection was performed by in-person interviews and semi-structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, χ2 test, Fisher’s exact test, and One-Way ANOVA test were performed to compare the variables based on BMI percentiles. Data were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel program (version 2010).Results: Mean BMI of the students was 17.27 (SD=3.16). The prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity was 11.0% and 25.8%, respectively. Categories of BMI percentiles were associated with birth order (p=0.026), personal hygiene practices (washing hands after coming home from outside (p<0.001) and before meal (p=0.045)), brushing teeth (p<0.001), the number of food items consumed daily (p<0.001), and mothers’ occupation (p=0.006). In context of basic hygiene practice, 61.3 % of respondents washed hands after coming home from outside, and 93.5 % reported washing hands before the meals.Conclusions: This study revealed that more than one third of the students had abnormal BMI. BMI screening in rural schools needs to be recommended in early grades for all children.
Factors influencing sanitation and hygiene practices among students in a public university in Bangladesh

Abstract:Introduction: Improved hygiene and sanitation practices in educational settings are effective for the prevention of infections, controlling the transmission of pathogens, and promoting good health. Bangladesh has made remarkable advances in improving higher education in recent decades. Over a hundred universities were established to expand higher education facilities across the country. Hundreds of thousands of graduate students spend time in university settings during their studies. However, little is known about the sanitation and hygiene practice of the university-going population. This study aims to understand and uncover which factors influence students' sanitation and hygiene behavior in university settings. Methods: This study was conducted in a public university named Shahjalal University of Science and Technology located in a divisional city of Bangladesh. Based on the Integrated Behavioral Model for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (IBM-WASH), we adopted an exploratory qualitative study design. We developed semi-structured interview guides entailing sanitation and hygiene behavior, access, and practice-related questions and tested their efficacy and clarity before use. We conducted seventeen in-depth interviews (IDIs), and four focus group discussions (FGDs, [6-8 participants per FGD]) with students, and seven key informant interviews (KIIs) with university staff. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Triangulation of methods and participants was performed to achieve data validity. Results: Despite having reasonable awareness and knowledge, the sanitation and hygiene practices of the students were remarkably low. A broad array of interconnected factors influenced sanitation and hygiene behavior, as well as each other. Individual factors (gender, awareness, perception, and sense of health benefits), contextual factors (lack of cleanliness and maintenance, and the supply of sanitary products), socio-behavioural factors (norms, peer influence), and factors related to university infrastructure (shortage of female toilets, lack of monitoring and supervision of cleaning activities) emerged as the underpinning factors that determined the sanitation and hygiene behavior of the university going-population. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that despite the rapid expansion of on-campus university education, hygiene practices in public universities are remarkably poor due to a variety of dynamic and interconnected factors situated in different (individual, contextual, socio-phycological) levels. Therefore, multi-level interventions including regular supply of WASH-related materials and agents, promoting low-cost WASH interventions, improving quality cleaning services, close monitoring of cleaning activities, promoting good hygiene behavior at the individual level, and introducing gender-sensitive WASH infrastructure and construction may be beneficial to advance improved sanitation and hygiene practices among university students.
Online education and its relation to hearing status among higher-secondary students in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background Online education gained its popularity in the education system during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The online platform, including social media, was institutionalized globally for the purpose of tutoring to keep the education process ongoing under feasible circumstances. However, the post-pandemic continuation of online education and prolonged usage of electronic devices imposed a greater risk of health issues related to sensory impairment. Our study aimed to determine the impact of online education on students' hearing status and its associated factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1030 students of 11th grade and above who were undergoing online education in Dhaka and Chattogram. Data were collected through the online administration of a structured questionnaire containing questions on sociodemographic status, family history of diseases, personal history of comorbidities, information related to screentime exposure, and SSQ-12 (Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing -12) scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s chi-square test, two independent sample t-tests, and multiple linear regression analysis were employed to obtain the results. Result The mean SSQ score of the study participants was 7.74±1.37. In bivariate analysis, gender, family income, family history of diseases (e.g., obesity, headache, hearing problem), personal history of diseases (e.g., obesity, insomnia), device type (mobile/tablet, computer), average daily screen time with sound, and break pattern during online learning were significantly (p<0.05 for all) associated with hearing status. In multivariate analysis, being female (coefficient -0.293, p=0.001), using mobile/tablet (coefficient -0.836, p=0.001), and continuous screen use (coefficient -0.348, p=0.003) were significantly associated with poor hearing status. Conclusion This current study indicates the detrimental effect of online education on the hearing of young students in Bangladesh. Future studies should explore the long-term hearing effects of online education and guide the policy makers towards incorporating online education with better approaches secondary to in-person classes.

Factors associated with school achievement of children aged 8-10 years in rural Bangladesh: Findings from a post hoc analysis of a community-based study

Abstract:Background: Education is one of the most important human capitals. Investment in education at early age returns best. A lot of factors influence children's educational achievement. Studies in developed countries well established the relation of school achievement with its associated variables. But information is lack on what factors play important role for school achievement at early age in low resource settings like Bangladesh. We aimed to find factors associated with school achievement in rural Bangladesh. Method: The data were acquired from a long-term follow up study, conducted in 8-10 years old children (n = 372). We used a locally developed school achievement tool based on Wide Range Achievement Test-4 to measure reading, spelling and math computation, Wechsler abbreviated scale of intelligence to measure intelligence Quotient (IQ), Digit span forward and backward for short term memory, and locally available Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire to measure behaviour. Socioeconomic and anthropometric information of the mothers and children were also collected. Multicollinearity of the data was checked. Unadjusted and adjusted multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Findings: Years of schooling and short-term memory were positively related to reading, spelling and math computation. For years of schooling it was-reading B = 8.09 (CI 5.84, 10.31), spelling 4.43 (4.33, 8.53) and math computation 5.23 (3.60, 6.87) and for short term memory- reading 3.56 (2.01,5.05), spelling 4.01 (2.56, 5.46) and math computation 2.49 (1.37, 3.62). Older children had lower scores of reading -0.48 (-0.94, -0.02), spelling -0.41 (-0.88, -0.02) and math computation -0.47 (-0.80, -0.14). Children's IQ predicted reading 0.48 (0.14, 0.81) and spelling 0.50 (0.18, 0.82) skills. Mother and father's education predicted Spelling 0.82 (0.16, 1.48) and reading 0.68 (0.06, 1.30) capacity respectively. Children enrolled in private schools had higher reading 10.28 (5.05, 15.51) and spelling 6.22 (1.31, 11.13) than those in the government schools. Children with more difficult behaviour tended to have lower scores in reading -0.51 (-0.96, -0.05). Conclusion: Children's school achievement is influenced by their IQ, years of schooling, type of school and parents' education. Therefore, intervention should be made to focus specifically on these variables and establish the effect of this intervention through robust research design.
Students Are Happier In Madrasah: The Results of Bayesian Analysis on Indonesian National Survey Data

Abstract:Islamic education is an important part of the Indonesian education system. This is not only because Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country in the world, but also because Islamic education has a social, cultural, and political role in Indonesian society. Nevertheless, madrasahs in Indonesia face several challenges entrenched from financial constraints. This leads to adverse consequences such as restrictions in the provision of infrastructure, inadequate quality of teachers, and low academic achievement in the national exam. Furthermore, students in madrasahs have more burdens than those in regular schools; for instance, students in madrasahs have more subjects to study, longer school hours, and must adhere to stricter rules and conduct. The challenges faced by madrasah raise concerns regarding its effects on students’ subjective well-being. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate whether there is a difference in students’ happiness between those who attend madrasahs and the regular schools. The data collected were based on the results of face-to-face interviews with 1,299 secondary education students in Indonesia. The results of the Bayesian ANCOVA analysis showed that the best-fitting model for predicting students’ happiness contained type of school and wealth level as predictors. The results also showed that the happiness level of madrasah students was significantly higher than their counterparts in regular high school. The finding is noteworthy because students’ happiness in madrasah is higher than in the regular school, despite the lower level of wealth. The results further discussed the literature on religiosity and happiness in the context of adolescent education.
Health Literacy, Health Behaviors, and Body Mass Index Impacts on Quality of Life: Cross-Sectional Study of University Students in Surabaya, Indonesia

Abstract:University student life is an important transformation stage with many potential factors that can impact negatively on the Quality of Life (QOL) and the adoption of unhealthy behaviors. Health literacy (HL), Health Behaviors (HBs), and Body Mass Index (BMI) have been found to be essential components in influencing QOL, in addition to socioeconomic determinants. To identify the influential factors of QOL, we performed a cross-sectional survey in a university, and 955 undergraduate students were enrolled as respondents. We measured two different aspects of HL, i.e., Comprehensive Health Literacy (CHL) and Functional Health Literacy (FHL). Overall, QOL scores in four domains did not differ, regarded as medium with averages ranging from 57.00–63.98, and no significant difference between male and female students. In multivariate analysis, CHL had a significant positive influence on all domains, while FHL only affected the psychological and environmental domains with negative associations. Academic performance had a significant positive association with physical and psychological domains. Students from education majors had higher QOL in the psychological and social domains. Moreover, students with normal or underweight BMI status had better psychological QOL, and physical exercise had a positive association with the social relationship and environmental domains. The findings confirmed that CHL and FHL had significant associations with QOL domains in different ways that should be addressed accordingly. Public health practitioners should carefully empower students to use both CHL and FHL as decision-making skills by incorporating them into related curricula.
