Abstract:Allium roseum is one of the medicinal plants of the Liliaceae family, widely used in the food industry and traditional medicine. It is known for its various biological properties, such as its antioxidant, antiviral, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. The present work aims to extract the polysaccharides from Allium roseum leaves and evaluate their antioxidant activities and hepatoprotective effects in vivo. Three polysaccharides from the leaves of Allium roseum were sequentially extracted in three media: water, chelating, and basic, respectively. They were characterized by size exclusion chromatography, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, FTIR-ATR, and NMR spectroscopy (1D and 2D). The different polysaccharides principally consist of glucose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, xylose, and galacturonic acid. The antioxidant activity and hepatoprotective effect of the extracts against Cd-caused oxidative stress in liver mouse were tested. Cd treatment, during 24 h, enhanced significantly lipid peroxidation by a high production of malondyaldehyd (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. In contrast, catalase activity (CAT) was decreased after the same period of exposure to the metal. The polysaccharides pre-treatment improved the antioxidant defense system to a great degree, mainly explained by the modulating levels of oxydative stress biomarkers (MDA, SOD, and CAT). This research clearly shows that Allium roseum polysaccharides, especially those extracted in aqueous medium, can be used as natural antioxidants with hepatoprotective properties.

Abstract:Background: Rhanterium adpressum is an endemic and desert plant found in Algerian Sahara, it is used by the local population in cheese production and folk medicine as an antidiuretic and antimicrobial. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the phytochemical composition of Rhanterium adpressum extracts by GC-MS and assess their inhibitory potential on α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes linked to diabetes. Method: Two solvents were used for extraction: petroleum ether and dichloromethane. The obtained extracts were then analysed by GC-MS and in vitro tested for their antidiabetic activity. Results: GC-MS analysis of extracts from R. adpressum flowers revealed various phytocompounds, such as (-)-Spathulenol, alpha.-Amyrin, Lupeol and Cedran-diol in petroleum ether extract; 1H-Cycloprop[e]azulen-7-ol, 5(1H)-Azulenone and alpha-cardinol in dichloromethane extract. Petroleum ether extract exhibited a good in vitro antidiabetic activity in comparison to dichloromethane extract. Conclusion: This research confirms the antidiabetic activity of petroleum ether extract when compared with dichloromethane extract; other studies are needed for purification and in vivo study of bio-compounds from Rhanterium adpressum. This investigation offers scientific data that flowers of Rhanterium adpressum exhibit in vitro anti-diabetic effect.

Abstract:Background: Canavalia rosea is a common tropical seacoast flowering plant from the family of Fabaceae which is reported as bay bean and coastal jack bean; has a wide range of therapeutic and nutraceutical properties. Aim: The present research aims to explore some pharmacological insights of the methanol extract C. rosea of leaves (MECR) and its chloroform fraction (CFCR) and n-hexane fraction (NFCR) through in-vitro and in-silico approaches. Methods: Different fractions of C. rosea were subjected to ferric reduction assay and total phenolic and flavonoid content assay to explore their antioxidant potential. The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed on the hypotonic-induced human erythrocyte-lysis model, while the protein denaturation method was applied for screening anti-arthritis properties of plant extract; and the cytotoxic activity was evaluated by brine shrimp lethality bioassay. In the in-silico study, molecular docking, pass prediction and ADME/T, analysis was used to investigate anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cytotoxic potency of five selected compounds of C. rosea. Finally, the quantum chemical density functional test analysis was applied to investigate the chemical and physical properties of those compounds. Results: All the soluble organic extracts of C. rosea demonstrated moderate toxicity with strong antioxidants potential, in which MECR manifested the peak level of scavenging activity (2.49) on ferric reduction assay. MECR, CFCR & NFCR significantly protected lysis of human erythrocyte membrane induced by hypotonic solution, whereas MECR and CFCR were exhibited partially equal inhibitory activity. The in-vitro anti-arthritis assay, MECR, NFCR and CFCR showed strongly significant (p˂0.001) inhibitory potency at 500 μg/mL & 1000 μg/mL concentrations. The molecular docking simulations revealed strong binding of all compounds to specific receptors, with Rutin showing the highest biological reactivity followed by Daucosterol, β-Sitosterol, Stigmasterol, and Guanidine. All the compounds showed favorable reactivity patterns, with O and H atoms poised for nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks in chemical density functional calculations. Conclusion: The recent investigation suggests that C. rosea could have the potential source of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritis and cytotoxic activity, prompting further investigation into their mechanisms.

Abstract:Allium roseum is an important medicinal and aromatic plant, specific to the North African flora and a rich source of important nutrients and bioactive molecules including flavonoids and organosulfur compounds whose biological activities and pharmacological properties are well known. In the present study, the inhibition of amyloid beta protein toxicity by the ethanolic extract of this plant is investigated for the first time. Preliminary biochemical analyses identified kæmpferol and luteolin-7-o-glucoside as the more abundant phenolic compounds. The effects of A. roseum extract (ARE) on aggregation and aggregate cytotoxicity of amyloid beta-42 (Aβ42), whose brain aggregates are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, were investigated by biophysical (ThT assay, Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy) and cellular assays (cytotoxicity, aggregate immunolocalization, ROS measurement and intracellular Ca2+ imaging). The biophysical data suggest that ARE affects the structure of the Aβ42 peptide, inhibits its polymerization, and interferes with the path of fibrillogenesis. The data with cultured cells shows that ARE reduces Aß42 aggregate toxicity by inhibiting aggregate binding to the cell membrane and by decreasing both oxidative stress and intracellular Ca2+. Accordingly, ARE could act as a neuroprotective factor against Aβ aggregate toxicity in Alzheimer's disease.

Exploring Rhamnus alaternus Polysaccharides: Extraction, Characterization, and Analysis of Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract:In the present study, polysaccharides were isolated from the leaves (WSPRaL) and stems (WSPRaS) of Rhamnus alaternus with yields of 3% and 3.25% for WSPRaS and WSPRaL, respectively. Crude WSPRaL was composed of proteins (260.740 ± 0.98 μg/mg), lipids (53.34 ± 2.38 μg/mg), total sugars (482.716 ± 3.02 μg/mg), and reducing sugars (420.240 ± 1.68 μg/mg). In contrast, WSPRaS contained proteins (269.629 ± 1.48 μg/mg), lipids (13.33 ± 0.28 μg/mg), total sugars (569.135 ± 3.82 μg/mg), and reducing sugars (531.732 ± 2.59 μg/mg). FTIR, TLC, and HPLC analyses revealed that the carbohydrate fraction of WSPRaS consisted mainly of glucuronic acid, glucose, galactose, xylose, mannose, and arabinose, whereas WSPRaL consisted of galacturonic acid, sucrose, glucose, rhamnose, xylose, mannose, and arabinose. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was used to determine the microstructure of the water-soluble polysaccharides. The physicochemical properties were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet‒visible (UV‒visible) absorption spectroscopy. The total antioxidant activities of the crude polysaccharides were evaluated using various assays: DPPH radical scavenging (IC50 WSPRaL = 615 ± 2.05 μg/mL, IC50 WSPRaS = 628 ± 2.38 μg/mL), ABTS radical scavenging (470 ± 5.78 μg/mL and 559 ± 4.32 μg/mL for WSPRaL and WSPRaS, respectively), reducing power (IC50 WSPRaS = 141.76 ± 3.16 μg/mL, IC50 WSPRaL = 203.89 ± 1.07 μg/mL), and chelating capacity (IC50 WSPRaS = 225 ± 1.75 μg/mL, IC50 WSPRaL = 219 ± 2.51 μg/mL). In addition, the antibacterial and biofilm inhibitory activities of both polysaccharides were tested against pathogenic strains, and the polysaccharides significantly inhibited plant growth. Overall, the results indicate that the crude polysaccharides extracted from R. alaternus are promising for use as functional and bioactive ingredients in the food and nutraceutical industries. These results highlight the potential of both polysaccharides as natural products in various sectors, including food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medicine, due to their significant biological properties.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate phytochemicals and in vitro biological potential of flowers, leaves and stem extracts of Rosa arvensis. Methods: Presence of twenty secondary metabolites was confirmed and then phenolic and flavonoid contents were quantified spectrophotometrically. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy was conducted to ascertain functional groups and antioxidant potential was examined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity, total antioxidant capacity and total reducing power assays. Human erythrocytes were used to assess anti-hemolytic activity and five bacterial strains were examined to determine antibacterial potential of plant extracts. Radish seeds were used to perform phytotoxic activity and cytotoxic potential was evaluated via brine shrimps and PC3 cell lines. Results: Highest phenolic contents were detected in the methanolic extract of Rosa arvensis flower (RAFM) [(151.635 ± 0.005) gallic acid equivalent mg/g] and highest flavonoid contents in the chloroform leaf extract (RALC) [(108.228 ± 0.004) quercetin equivalent mg/g]. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed the presence of wide range of functional groups. The antioxidant assays indicated highest DPPH scavenging activity [IC50 (23.5 ± 0.6) μg/mL] in the methanolic stem extract (RASM), highest total antioxidant capacity [(265.1 ± 0.9) μg/mL] in RAFM and highest reducing potential [(209.9 ± 0.6) μg/mL] in leaf extract (RALM). Highest anti-hemolytic activity [(90.0 ± 0.5) μg/mL] was recorded in RAFM and brine shrimp cytotoxicity potential [(52.3 ± 0.3) μg/mL] in RASM. The antimicrobial activity was detected highest [(21.1 ± 0.5) mm inhibition zones] in RALM against Streptococcus aureus. In the end, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity results depicted less than 50 % inhibition in the methanolic extracts. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings will be helpful in designing pharmaceutical regimens and therefore, more studies can be recommended to isolate and characterize compounds associated with the biological activities of Rosa arvensis.
Pelargonium graveolens: Towards In-Depth Metabolite Profiling, Antioxidant and Enzyme-Inhibitory Potential

Abstract:Pelargonium graveolens L'Hèr. (Geraniaceae) is renowned for its traditional use as a flavor, ornamental and medicinal plant. This work aimed at an in-depth study of the phytochemical profiling and in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibition assessment of a methanol-aqueous extract from P. graveolens leaves. A UHPLC-HRMS analysis revealed more than 110 secondary metabolites, including 8 acyltartaric and 11 acylcitric/acylisocitric acids; 8 gallotannins; 36 flavonols, flavanones and methoxylated flavonoids together with 17 phenolic and aliphatic acids; and 21 phenolic acid glycosides. For the first time, acylcitric acids along with feruloyl- and coumaroyltartaric acids are reported in the species. The leaf extract actively scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH (273.45 mg trolox equivalent (TE/g)) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+) radicals (531.97 mgTE/g) and showed a high reducing power: 431.32 mg TE/g Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and 292.21 mg TE/g Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It possessed a metal chelating capacity (13.44 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid equivalent (EDTAE)/g) and contained 2.71 mmol TE/g in the phosphomolybdenum assay. The rose geranium extract exhibited high inhibition towards acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase (2.80 and 2.20 mg galantamine equivalent (GALAE)/g, respectively) and tyrosinase (75.49 mg kojic acid equivalent (KAE)/g). It inhibited α-glucosidase and α-amylase (3.75 mmol and 0.79 acarbose equivalent (ACAE)/g, respectively) and lipase (28.91 mg orlistat equivalent (OE)/g). This study sheds light into the future potential application of the rose geranium in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products.

Abstract:BackgroundMany plant polysaccharides have shown high antioxidant and immunostimulating properties and can be explored as novel molecules with biological properties that can potentially improve immune function. The objective of this work was to characterize soluble and cell wall polysaccharides isolated from the stem bark of Allanblackia floribunda and Chromolaena odorata leaves and to evaluate their antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties.MethodsThree polysaccharide fractions: soluble polysaccharides (PoS), pectins (Pec) and hemicelluloses (Hem) were extracted from A. floribunda stem bark and C. odorata leaves. These samples were analysed for their proteins, phenolic compounds and total sugar contents. The monosaccharide composition was determined by gas chromatography and arabinogalactan proteins content in PoS was evaluated by rocket electrophoresis. The in vitro antioxidant activities were evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis-3-éthylbenzylthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assays and ferrous ions chelating activity. Immunomodulatory activities were performed on the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using proliferation and enzyme linked immunospot (ELISPOT) method to determine the production of an interferon-gamma.ResultsThe characterization of the various fractions showed varied metabolites in each plant. In PoS fractions, Ara and Gal were the major monosaccharides found, indicating that arabinogalactans are the primary macromolecules. Hem fractions contained predominantly Xyl and GalA for A. floribunda and Xyl (upto 80 %) for and C. odorata. A. floribunda Hem fraction and C. odorata PoS fraction showed significant DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities and immunostimulatory activity via stimulation of PBMC and production of IFN-γ in a dose-dependent manner.ConclusionThe results obtained from this study support the ethnomedicinal use of the stem bark of A. floribunda and leaves of C. odorata. Further research is necessary to have supporting evidence that the antioxidative and immunomodulative activities of these fractions are really connected to the polysaccharides and not polyphenols.

Abstract:Despite the growing interest in using natural compounds for disease prevention and treatment, Allium ursinum (wild garlic), known for its therapeutic properties, has not been extensively studied for its chemical composition and biological activities. Therefore, this study aims to explore the in vitro antioxidant, antibacterial, and antitumor activities of A. ursinum extracts according to their functional phytochemical profile, while assessing whether ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) enhances bioactive properties in comparison to conventional maceration (CM). Both extracts were characterized by spectrophotometric methods and LC-ESI+-MS. The antioxidant activity was assessed via the CUPRAC and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays, the antimicrobial properties via the disk-diffusion method against five pathogenic strains, and the antitumor activity via the MTT assay on four cancer cell lines. The major constituents of the methanolic extracts from leaves were kaempferol derivatives and alliin. The quercetin derivative rutin was also found. Maceration assisted using UAE yielded 20% more bioactive compounds in comparison to CM alone. Employing UAE in the extraction significantly increased antioxidant and antimicrobial proprieties, in line with its chemical composition. The antitumor cytotoxic activity was low to moderate, regardless of method, as explained by the absence of highly cytotoxic compounds. Wild garlic extracts possessed strong antioxidant and substantial antibacterial activities.

Abstract:Polygonum hydropiper L. is a traditionally used medicinal plant. The present study was designed to explore the α-amylase inhibitory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of Polygonum hydropiper L. Polarity-based solvent extracts (n-hexane, acetone, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, and water) of Polygonum hydropiper leaves and stem were used. Antioxidant activity was assessed by free radical scavenging assay (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity methods. Quantitative phytochemical analyses suggested that the stem of Polygonum hydropiper L. contains higher levels of bioactive compounds than its leaves (p < 0.05). The results suggested that stem-derived extracts of Polygonum hydropiper L. are more active against bacterial species, including two Gram-positive and three Gram-negative strains. Moreover, our results showed that the bioactive compounds of Polygonum hydropiper L. significantly inhibit α-amylase activity. Finally, we reported the polarity-based solvent extracts of Polygonum hydropiper L. and revealed that the stem, rather than leaves, has a high antioxidant potential as measured by FRAP and DPPH assay with IC50 values of 1.38 and 1.59 mg/mL, respectively. It may also be deducted from the data that the Polygonum hydropiper L. could be a significant candidate, which should be subjected to further isolation and characterization, to be used as an antidiabetic, antimicrobial and antioxidant resource in many industries, like food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Abstract:Rosemary is one of the most important medicinal plants for natural therapy due to its multiple pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antiproliferative, antitumor, hepato- and nephroprotective, hypolipidemic, hypocholesterolemic, antihypertensive, anti-ischemic, hypoglycemic, radioprotective, antimicrobial, antiviral, antiallergic, and wound healing properties. Our study reports for the first time, over a 12-month period, the identification and quantification of polyphenols and the investigation of the antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities of the Rosmarinus officinalis L. species harvested at flowering from the flora of southwestern Romania (Oltenia Region). Identification and quantification of polyphenolic acids was made by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS). Total phenolic content was determined using the spectrophotometric method. In situ antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and AChE inhibitory assay, respectively, on high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) plates. DPPH radical scavenging activity was also assessed spectrophotometrically. The results revealed significant correlations between specific polyphenolic compounds and the measured biological activities, understanding the role of seasonal variations and providing insights into the optimal harvesting times and medicinal benefits of rosemary. Our research brings new information on the phytochemical profile of R. officinalis as a natural source of polyphenols with antioxidant and AChE inhibitory properties.

Abstract:Artemisia argyi leaves (AL) are a common traditional Chinese herbal medicine that possess significant biological activities, including antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, promoting blood circulation and reducing inflammation. AL contains many natural bioactive substances. In this study, Soxhlet extraction method was implemented to extract polysaccharides and essential oils (EOs) from AL, and the process was optimized by multi-response optimization. To explorer the best extraction conditions, three experimental parameters, soaking time (2-10 h), extraction time (1-3 h), and material liquid ratio (1:12-1:24 g/mL), were investigated in single-factor experiments. The Box-Behnken design of response surface analysis was used to optimize the extraction conditions. Further, the antioxidant ability of polysaccharides was evaluated using DPPH clearance rate. The results showed that the optimum extraction parameters of soaking time, extraction time and ratio of material to liquid were: 10 h, 2.5 h, and 1:27, respectively. The extraction rate of crude polysaccharides from AL reached 11.21% under the optimized conditions. Abstract:Medicinal plants are a valuable reservoir of novel pharmacologically active compounds. ROS and free radicals are primary contributors to oxidative stress, a condition associated with the onset of degenerative diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, and vascular disease. In this study, we used different spectrophotometry methods to demonstrate the antioxidant properties of 6 Allium extracts: Allium fistulosum; Allium ursinum; Allium cepa: Arieș red cultivar of A. cepa, and white variety of A. cepa; Allium sativum; and Allium senescens subsp. montanum. HPLC–MS determined the chemical composition of the extracts. Among the tested extracts, the Arieș red cultivar of A. cepa stands out as having the best antioxidant activity, probably due to the high content of polyphenols and alliin (12.67 μg/mL and 3565 ng/mL, respectively). The results obtained in this study show that Allium extracts have antioxidant activity, but also free radical scavenging capabilities. Also, their interactions with cytochrome c and hemoglobin can be the basis of future studies to create treatments for oxidative stress-related diseases.

Abstract:Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (AR) has been widely used as a herbal medicine for treating various symptoms and possesses a number of bioactivities. A neutral polysaccharide ARP-1 was isolated from AR with weight-average molecular weight of 214 kDa. The heteropolysaccharide ARP-1 was composed of fucose, arabinose, galactose, glucose and mannose with a molar ratio of 0.40:14.25:10.22:1.06:0.41. Linkage and NMR analysis showed that ARP-1 had a backbone containing →3,6)-β-d-Galp-(1→ and →6)-β-d-Galp-(1 → residues, and oligosaccharide side chains containing Araf and Galp units were attached to the backbone at C-3 of →3,6)-β-d-Galp-(1 → residues. Antioxidant activity assays showed that ARP-1 exhibited potent antioxidant activities, including ABTS, hydroxy and DPPH radicals scavenging and reducing power. Besides, ARP-1 decreased the production of ROS and MDA, and improved the activities of SOD, which resulted in the protection of PC12 cells against H2O2-induced oxidative stress. The findings indicated that ARP-1 might be used as a potential natural antioxidant.

Abstract:The Astragalus armatus Willd. plant's phenolic constituent extraction and identification were optimized using the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method and the LC-MS/MS analysis, respectively. Additionally, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), beta carotene, reducing power, DMSO alcalin, silver nanoparticle (SNP)-based method, phenanthroline, and hydroxyl radical tests were utilized to assess the extract's antioxidant capacity, while the neuroprotective effect was examined in vitro against acetylcholinesterase enzyme. This study accurately estimated the chemical bonding between the identified phenolic molecules derived from LC-MS/MS and the AChE. The extract was found to contain sixteen phenolic substances, and rosmarinic, protocatechuic, and chlorogenic acids, as well as 4-hydroxybenzoic, hyperoside, and hesperidin, were the most abundant substances in the extract. In all antioxidant experiments, the plant extract demonstrated strong antioxidant activity and a significant inhibitory impact against AChE (40.25 ± 1.41 μg/mL). According to molecular docking affinity to the enzyme AChE, the top-five molecules were found to be luteolin, quercetin, naringenin, rosmarinic acid, and kaempferol. Furthermore, these tested polyphenols satisfy the essential requirements for drug-like characteristics and Lipinski's rule of five. These results highlight the significance of the A. armatus plant in cosmetics, as food additives, and in the pharmaceutical industry due to its rosmarinic and chlorogenic acid content.
Extraction and Encapsulation of Phenolic Compounds of Tunisian Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) Extracts in Silk Fibroin Nanoparticles

Abstract:Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is known to be an effective potential source of natural antioxidants which confer benefits to human health. Their bioactive properties are mainly due to phenolic compounds but these molecules are highly vulnerable to oxidants, light, heat, pH, water and enzymatic activities. Therefore, the stability and shelf life of phenolic compounds should be increased by being protected from chemical and physical damage by means of encapsulation prior to application. Encapsulation is becoming increasingly important in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, textile, personal care, chemical, biotechnology, and medicinal industries due to its potential for stabilization and delivery of delicate and precious bioactive compounds. The aim of the present work was to describe the polyphenolic profile of Tunisian Rosemary, collected from two different bioclimatic areas, and further loading in silk fibroin nanoparticles. The loaded nanoparticles were characterized in terms of morphology, size, polydispersity, Z-potential, secondary structure of the protein, encapsulation efficiency, loading content, and antioxidant activity. On one hand, HPLC analysis revealed the presence of 18 polyphenolic compounds of whichcarnosic acid and carnosol were found to be the most abundant compounds (46.3 to 76.4 and 22.4 to 43.5 mg of compound per gram of dry plant weight (mg/g DPW) respectively), Total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 85.8 to 137.3 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g DPW in post-distilled rosemary extracts andantioxidant activity reached the values of 5.9 to 8.3 µmol of ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g DPW). On the other hand loaded nanoparticles were almost spherical and presented nanometric size and negative Z-potential. Although the encapsulation efficiency in silk fibroin nanoparticles and the drug loading content were low in the conditions of the assay, the encapsulated polyphenols retained near 85% of the radical scavenging activity against DPPH· after 24 h. of incubation at 37 °C. The results showed that post-distilled rosemary residues had an effective potential as natural antioxidants due to their significant antioxidant activity and seemed to be useful in both pharmaceutical and food industries with beneficial properties that might confer benefits to human health and these silk fibroin nanoparticles loaded with rosemary extracts are thus a promising combination for several applications in food technology or nanomedicine.

Abstract:This study was designed to investigate the impact of different extraction solvent systems on the chemical composition and biological activities of Allium scorodoprasum L. (Amaryllidaceae)—the medicinal plant that was traditionally used as a remedy in the medieval period in the Balkans. Targeted chemical analysis of nine different extracts was performed by UHPLC(−)HESI–QqQ-MS/MS. Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of the extracts were investigated on sixteen clinical isolates of bacteria, yeasts and dermatomycetes, all isolated from infected human skin and corneal formations. Cytotoxicity and wound-healing properties were tested on human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT cell line). Antioxidant activity was assessed by six different assays, while beneficial potential against certain neurodegenerative diseases and type 2 diabetes was determined in selected enzyme inhibition assays coupled with molecular modeling. The results showed that the obtained extracts were rich in phenolic compounds, especially flavonoid glycosides such as rutin and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside. All of the extracts showed antimicrobial, wound-healing, antioxidant and anti-enzymatic properties. This study is the first of its kind, linking the medieval medicinal use of wild-growing flowers of A. scorodoprasum with contemporary in vitro scientific approaches.

Abstract:The genus Rhodiola L., an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan medicine in China, exhibits a broad spectrum of applications. This genus contains key compounds such as ginsenosides, polysaccharides, and flavonoids, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycaemic, immune-enhancing, and anti-hypoxic properties. As a vital raw material, Rhodiola L. contributes to twenty-four kinds of Chinese patent medicines and 481 health food products in China, finding extensive application in the health food sector. Recently, polysaccharides have emerged as a focal point in natural product research, with applications spanning the medicine, food, and materials sectors. Despite this, a comprehensive and systematic review of polysaccharides from the genus Rhodiola L. polysaccharides (TGRPs) is warranted. This study undertakes a systematic review of both domestic and international literature, assessing the research advancements and chemical functional values of polysaccharides derived from Rhodiola rosea. It involves the isolation, purification, and identification of a variety of homogeneous polysaccharides, followed by a detailed analysis of their chemical structures, pharmacological activities, and molecular mechanisms, structure-activity relationship (SAR) of TGRPs. The discussion includes the influence of molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and glycosidic bonds on their biological activities, such as sulfation and carboxymethylation et al. Such analyses are crucial for deepening the understanding of Rhodiola rosea and for fostering the development and exploitation of TGRPs, offering a reference point for further investigations into TGRPs and their resource utilization.
