Abstract:Health literacy is emerging as an important factor for medical outcomes as more patients turn to the internet for information about their disease. However educational materials on complex conditions such as atrial fibrillation tend to still be esoteric and result in compromised patient autonomy. We add to the current literature by examining the reading level of websites of major healthcare intuitions and general medicine websites. An online Google search using the term "atrial fibrillation" was used to collect patient educational material from the first 20 academic health institutions (AHI) and 20 non-affiliated general medicine websites (GMW). The materials were assessed for readability using nine (9) tests from the analysis software Readability Studio (Oleander Software Solutions Ltd., Maharashtra, India). The patient education materials from the AHI and GMW websites were written at a college freshman reading grade level (13.050 ± 0.845) and high school junior year reading level (11.64 ± 0.789) respectively. The GMW tend to have a wider range of readability levels, and many were scored at the 6th-grade level. In conclusion, the readability levels of patient education materials on atrial fibrillation from both the AHI and GMW are well above the 6th-grade level recommended by the NIH and AMA, posing a risk to the patients' understanding of the materials. The high readability scores found across all websites and the differences between the groups have been attributed to the various goals and target audiences of the material.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Online cardiovascular health materials are easily accessible with an Internet connection, but the readability of its content may limit practical use by patients.OBJECTIVE: The goal of our study was to assess the readability of the most commonly searched Internet health education materials for cardiovascular diseases accessed via Google.METHODS: We selected 20 commonly searched cardiovascular disease terms: aneurysm, angina, atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, pericardial disease, peripheral arterial disease, rheumatic heart disease, stroke, sudden death, valvular heart disease, mini-stroke, lower extremity edema, pulmonary embolism, and exertional dyspnea. Terms were selected on Google and selected up to 10 results in order of presentation in the search results by reviewing a maximum of 15 pages of Google search results specifically providing education toward patients to yield 196 total patient education articles.KEY RESULTS: All readability measures assessing grade level measures found the 196 articles were written at a mean 10.9 (<i>SD</i> = 1.8) grade reading level. Moreover, 99.5% of the articles were written beyond the 5th- to 6th-grade level recommended by the American Medical Association.CONCLUSIONS: Given the prominent use of online patient education material, we consider readability as a quality metric that should be evaluated prior to online publication of any health education materials. Further study of how to improve the readability of online materials may enhance patient education, engagement, and health outcomes.
Readability of Patient Education Materials on the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Website

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The recommended readability of patient education materials by the American Medical Association (AMA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be no greater than a sixth-grade reading level. However, online resources may be too complex for some patients to understand, and poor health literacy predicts inferior health-related quality of life outcomes.AIM: This study evaluated whether the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) website's patient education materials meet recommended readability guidelines for medical information. We hypothesized that the readability of these online materials would have a Flesch-Kincaid formula grade above the sixth grade.METHODS: All 65 patient education entries of the AOSSM website were analyzed for grade level readability using the Flesch-Kincaid formula, a widely used and validated tool to evaluate the text reading level.RESULTS: The average (standard deviation) readability of all 65 articles was grade level 10.03 (1.44); 64 articles had a readability score above the sixth-grade level, which is the maximum level recommended by the AMA and NIH. Mean readability of the articles exceeded this level by 4.03 grade levels (95% CI, 3.7-4.4; P < 0.0001). We found post-hoc that only 7 articles had a readability score ≤ an eighth-grade level, the average reading level of US adults. Mean readability of the articles exceeded this level by 2.03 grade levels (95% CI, 1.7-2.4; P < 0.0001).CONCLUSION: The readability of online AOSSM patient education materials exceeds the readability level recommended by the AMA and NIH, and is above the average reading level of the majority of US adults. This online information may be of limited utility to most patients due to a lack of comprehension. Our study provides a clear example of the need to improve the readability of specific education material in order to maximize the efficacy of multimedia sources.

Abstract:Objective Patient education materials (PEMs) can help promote health literacy (HL) among patients. However, their use depends on how easily patients can read and comprehend the information. Several national organizations recommend that text be written at a 6th to 8th‐grade level. Herein, we assess and compare the readability and comprehension (RC) of PEMs for rheumatological and general medical conditions. Methods We utilized six standardized RC metrics including the well‐known Flesch Kincaid Readability Ease (FKRE) and Flesch Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) to evaluate the RC of PEMs (n=175) on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) (n=86) and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (n=89) websites. Two‐sided T‐tests compared RC between the two resources. A p‐value of ≤0.05 was considered significant. Results On all six standardized metrics used, the mean reading level of all PEMs ranged from high school to college level. For example, the mean (SD) of Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) was 10.89 (1.88), corresponding to a 10th‐grade education, and the mean (SD) of Gunning Fog Score (GFS) was 14.39 (2.49), corresponding to a 14th‐grade education required to understand the text. JAMA PEMs had significantly more difficult RC levels compared to ACR PEMs based on five of the six indices used (p<0.05). Conclusion PEMs available on the ACR and JAMA websites do not align with national organizations' recommendations for RC levels. To enhance patient understanding and promote HL, existing PEMs must be modified in line with these recommendations.

Abstract:Introduction The internet is an essential resource for patients and their loved ones to understand their medical conditions, and professional medical organizations have taken great strides to develop educational material targeting patients. The average American reads at a seventh to eighth grade reading level, hence it is important to understand the readability of this medical information to ensure patients comprehend what is being presented. Methods In January 2023, online patient education material was downloaded from major cerebrovascular healthcare organizations and assessed using eight assessments, including Bormuth Cloze Mean, Bormuth Grade Placement, Coleman–Liau (grade levels), Coleman–Liau (predictive cloze scores), Flesch Reading Ease (FRE), and Fry. Results A total of 32 files were extracted from six organizations and analyzed across 15 readability measures. None of the organizations met the federal government guidelines for grade-level readability. This held constant across all measured tests. Two organizations had above a postgraduate level. The FRE graphs do not identify any organizations with material below a ninth grade reading level, while the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) have a postgraduate readability level. The Fry graphs show similar results, with AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section, Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS), SIR, and AANS having college-level readability. The lowest readability across all measures is only at an early seventh grade reading level. Conclusions Current health literacy content for cerebrovascular patients is far above the recommended readability level. We provide straightforward suggestions for how major professional organizations should improve their informational material on cerebrovascular diseases to improve patient understanding.

Abstract:Background and objective: Readability of patient education materials is of utmost importance to ensure understandability and dissemination of health care information in uro-oncology. We aimed to investigate the readability of the official patient education materials of the European Association of Urology (EAU) and American Urology Association (AUA). Methods: Patient education materials for prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, penile, and urethral cancers were retrieved from the respective organizations. Readability was assessed via the WebFX online tool for Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease Score (FRES) and for reading grade levels by Flesch Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Gunning Fog Score (GFS), Smog Index (SI), Coleman Liau Index (CLI), and Automated Readability Index (ARI). Layperson readability was defined as a FRES of ≥70 and with the other readability indexes <7 according to European Union recommendations. This study assessed only objective readability and no other metrics such as understandability. Key findings and limitations: Most patient education materials failed to meet the recommended threshold for laypersons. The mean readability for EAU patient education material was as follows: FRES 50.9 (standard error [SE]: 3.0), and FKGL, GFS, SI, CLI, and ARI all with scores ≥7. The mean readability for AUA patient material was as follows: FRES 64.0 (SE: 1.4), with all of FKGL, GFS, SI, and ARI scoring ≥7 readability. Only 13 out of 70 (18.6%) patient education materials' paragraphs met the readability requirements. The mean readability for bladder cancer patient education materials was the lowest, with a FRES of 36.7 (SE: 4.1). Conclusions and clinical implications: Patient education materials from leading urological associations reveal readability levels beyond the recommended thresholds for laypersons and may not be understood easily by patients. There is a future need for more patient-friendly reading materials. Patient summary: This study checked whether health information about different cancers was easy to read. Most of it was too hard for patients to understand.
Quality assessment of online patient education resources for peripheral neuropathy

Abstract:Given its practicality, the internet is a primary resource for patients afflicted with diseases like peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, it is important that the readily available online resources on peripheral neuropathy are tailored to the general public, particularly concerning readability. Patient education resources were downloaded from the US National Library of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Neuropathy.org, GBS/CIDP Foundation International, Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy, and Neuropathy Action Foundation websites. All patient education material related to peripheral neuropathy was evaluated for its level of readability using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. The FRE scores averaged 43.4 with only the US National Library of Medicine scoring above 60 (76.5). The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scores averaged 11.0. All scores were above a seventh-grade level except the US National Library of Medicine, which had a score of a fifth-grade reading level. Most Americans may not fully benefit from patient education resources concerning peripheral neuropathy education on many of the websites. Only the US National Library of Medicine, which is written at a fifth-grade level, is likely to benefit the average American.

Abstract:Background: The Internet has become a popular source of health information for patients and their families. Healthcare experts recommend that the readability of online education materials be at or below a sixth grade reading level. This translates to a standardized Flesch Reading Ease Score between 81 and 90, which is equivalent to conversational English. However, previous studies have demonstrated that the readability of online education materials of various orthopedic topics is too advanced for the average patient. To date, the readability of online education materials for pediatric spinal conditions has not been analyzed. The objective of this study was to assess the readability of online educational materials of top pediatric orthopedic hospital websites for pediatric spinal conditions. Methods: Online patient education materials from the top 25 pediatric orthopedic institutions, as ranked by the U.S. News and World Report hospitals for pediatric orthopedics, were assessed utilizing multiple readability assessment metrics including Flesch–Kincaid, Flesch Reading Ease, Gunning Fog Index, and others. Correlations between academic institutional ranking, geographic location, and the use of concomitant multimedia modalities with Flesch–Kincaid scores were evaluated using a Spearman regression. Results: Only 32% (8 of 25) of top pediatric orthopedic hospitals provided online health information at or below a sixth grade reading level. The mean Flesch–Kincaid score was 9.3 ± 2.5, Flesch Reading Ease 48.3 ± 16.2, Gunning Fog Score 10.7 ± 3.0, Coleman–Liau Index 12.1 ± 2.8, Simple Measure of the Gobbledygook Index 11.7 ± 2.1, Automated Readability Index 9.0 ± 2.7, FORCAST 11.3 ± 1.2, and Dale–Chall Readability Index 6.7 ± 1.4. There was no significant correlation between institutional ranking, geographic location, or use of video material with Flesch–Kincaid scores (p = 0.1042, p = 0.7776, p = 0.3275, respectively). Conclusion: Online educational material for pediatric spinal conditions from top pediatric orthopedic institutional websites is associated with excessively complex language which may limit comprehension for the majority of the US population. The complexity of online patient education materials for wound care strategies: A readability analysis

Abstract:Background In the United States, over 6 million people are affected by chronic wounds. Patients often rely on the Internet for treatment information; however, these educational materials typically exceed the average eighth-grade health literacy level. This study aimed to assess the readability and language accessibility of online patient education materials on wound care strategies. Methods A search was conducted on Google for articles related to wound care strategies. The first 12 unique websites from each search strategy were selected for further analysis. Readability was assessed using 11 tests, with the mean scores calculated for each. Results A total of 66 articles pertaining to wound care strategies were retrieved from 43 websites. All articles had an average reading grade level of 13.5 ± 2.5 and an average reading age of 18.7 ± 2.5 years. Websites were categorized by the following sources: academic (34.9%), reagent/biologic manufacturers (27.9%), wound care (18.6%), news media organizations (14%), and other (4.7%). Flesch Reading Ease Score, graded from 0 for most difficult to 100 for least difficult, was found to be highest for academic websites (44.2, P = .01) and lowest for news media websites (24.9, P = .01). Academic websites were available in the more languages compared to all other website categories ( P < .01). Conclusion Online materials related to wound care strategies often exceed the National Institute of Health recommended eighth-grade reading level. This study emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to create more accessible educational materials to address the gap in health literacy and optimize patient care.

Readability, Understandability, and Actionability of Online Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Tools and Patient Educational Material: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Introduction: Individuals with kidney diseases have increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. Online cardiovascular risk assessment tools can educate patients on risks and modifiable factors. Since patients have variable health literacy, we evaluated the readability, understandability, and actionability of publicly available online cardiovascular risk assessment tools. Methods: We systematically searched, reviewed, characterized, and assessed English-language cardiovascular risk assessment tools online for readability (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level [FKGL] score), understandability, and actionability (Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for printable materials [PEMAT-P]). Results: After screening 969 websites, 69 websites employing 76 risk tools were included. The most frequently used tools were the Framingham Risk Score (n = 13) and the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease score (n = 12). Most tools were intended for the general population and estimated the 10-year incident cardiovascular risk. Patient education was provided in the form of targets for blood pressure (n = 17), lipids (n = 15), or glucose (n = 5); and advice regarding diet (n = 18), exercise (n = 19), and smoking cessation (n = 20). The median FKGL, PEMAT understandability, and actionability scores were 6.2 (4.7, 8.5), 84.6% (76.9%, 89.2%), and 60% (40%, 60%), respectively. Conclusion: The online cardiovascular risk tools were generally easy to read and understand, but only a third provided education on risk modification. Judicious selection of an online cardiovascular risk assessment tool may help patients in self-management.

Abstract:Introduction and aim Nowadays, more and more people are getting health information online. Therefore, the importance of online health information readability is increasing. Our hypothesis in this study is that, similar to the characteristics of patient education materials in many other medical fields, the readability values of Internet-based PEMs related to intensive care, belonging to intensive care societies, are not within the recommended limits. In order to test this hypothesis in our study, we aimed to evaluate the readability of Internet-based PEMs related to intensive care, which belong to intensive care societies, by using readability formulas. Methods Our study was conducted as a cross-sectional and observational study after the approval of the non-interventional ethics committee of Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Medicine (Date: September 21, 2022; Number:2022/30–09). For our study, the websites of intensive and critical care societies, which are members of the world federation of societies of intensive and critical care medicine (WFICC), and The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) were searched. The readability of the PEMs available on the societies sites was evaluated using the readability formulas of Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES), Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), and Gunning Fog (GFOG). Results 116 PEM belonging to 11 different societies were included in our study. In the readability analysis of PEM, the FRES was 55.23 ± 12.54 (difficult), mean FKGL and SMOG were 10.94 ± 2.51 and 9.67 ± 1.88 years, respectively, and mean GFOG score was 13.77 ± 2.68 (very difficult). All readability formula results were significantly higher than the recommended sixth grade level ( p < 0.001). When the societies were evaluated individually, the PEMs of all societies were above the sixth grade level according to all readability results ( p 0.05). It was determined that none of the evaluated societies websites were HONcode certified. Conclusion In our study, we evaluated the readability of internet-based PEMs related to intensive care which belonging to intensive care societies. As a result of our study, it was determined that the readability level of PEMs was significantly higher than the 6th grade level recommended by the National Institute of Health. This indicates that PEMs should be evaluated for readability and modified to make them understandable to the general public. PEMs of intensive and critical care societies should be prepared with attention to the recommendations on readability.

Abstract:BackgroundLung cancer screening can reduce mortality but can be a complex, multi-step process. Poor health literacy is associated with unfavorable outcomes and decreased use of preventative services, so it is important to address barriers to care through efficient and practical education. The readability of lung cancer screening materials for patients is unknown and may not be at the recommended 6th grade reading level set by the American Medical Association. Our goals were to: (1) measure the health literacy of a lung cancer screening population from an urban academic medical center, and (2) examine the readability of online educational materials for lung cancer screening.MethodsWe performed a retrospective cross sectional study at a single urban academic center. Health literacy was assessed using three validated screening questions. To assess the readability of educational materials, we performed a Google search using the phrase, “What is lung cancer screening?” and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) formula was used to estimate the grade level required to understand the text.ResultsThere were 404 patients who underwent lung cancer screening during the study period. The prevalence of inadequate/marginal health literacy was 26.7–38.0%. Fifty websites were reviewed and four were excluded from analysis because they were intended for medical providers. The mean FKGL for the 46 websites combined was 10.6 ± 2.2.ConclusionsLow health literacy was common and is likely a barrier to appropriate education for lung cancer screening. The current online educational materials regarding lung cancer screening are written above the recommended reading level set by the American Medical Association.

Factors That Contribute to Positive Perceived Health in an Older Population

Abstract:This study explored the extent to which factors commonly associated with negative outcomes of aging also predicted positive perceived health in a group of communitydwelling older people. Questionnaires originally administered during a randomized trial of an HMO’s outpatient group visit program supplied data from approximately 700 participants. Stepwise modeling identified significant factors within categories of predictors of perceived health. Hierarchical multiple linear regression then modeled the incremental importance of theoretically-derived categories of factors. Many but not all of the factors previously associated with negative outcomes of aging also predicted positive perceived health, accounting for 38% of the variation. The most important predictors were fewer chronic conditions and noworsening of those conditions, mobility and better physical performance status, and the absence of depression. Gender, limitations in daily living activities, dementia, and utilization of services had little effect. The categories of f factors associated with positive perceived health had cumulative, interdependent effects.

Abstract:Summary Introduction Health literacy, a strong indicator of health outcomes, is an important aspect of good patient care. With an increasing reliance on the Internet for health information, online patient materials should be easily understood by the average reader. The American Medical Association (AMA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend that patient education materials be written at a sixth-grade level. Creating effective digital information requires careful consideration of not only word choice, but also many other factors including actionability, comprehensiveness, evidence, and visual organization. To support the creation of valuable online health content, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) published Health Literacy Online, a research-based guide that discusses why and how to design digital health information tools.This study aims to assess the effectiveness of online patient education materials regarding vocal tremor, assess the effectiveness of patient education materials published by the American Laryngological Association, and to evaluate the usefulness of the Health Literacy Online guide in creating effective online patient education materials on laryngological diseases. Methods The first 50 unsponsored search results for the terms "vocal tremor" and "essential vocal tremor" were evaluated. Each website was analyzed using the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) readability tests, the DISCERN instrument, and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). The resources published by the American Laryngological Association were also evaluated in this manner. Results Of the 100 websites identified from the initial queries, 14 websites were included in this analysis. The average FRES and FKGL scores were 47.21 ± 10.47 and 10.96 ± 2.46, respectively, indicating that readers need a 11th-grade education to comprehend the materials. The average DISCERN score was 22.50 ± 9.76, indicating "very poor" quality with serious shortcomings and not appropriate sources of information about treatment choices. The average PEMAT understandability score was 68.43% ± 9.80% with an actionability score of 20.00% ± 23.53%, indicating the information was fairly difficult to process and do not help identify next steps. For the materials published by the American Laryngological Association (ALA), the average FRES and FKGL scores were 38.33 ± 12.81 and 12.56 ± 2.15, respectively, indicating a 12th-grade reading level. A DISCERN score of 27 was consistent across each item, indicating "very poor" quality. A PEMAT understandability score was 45% with an actionability score of 0%, indicating they are difficult to process and do not help identify next steps. After writing a revised sample of the information provided by the ALA based on the ODPHP's Health Literacy Online tool, the new FRES and FKGL score was 75.6 and 5.9, respectively. The new DISCERN score was 35. The new PEMAT understandability scores was 79% with actionability scores of 80%. Conclusion This study found that most publicly available online patient education materials on essential vocal tremor and other laryngological diseases do not use plain language and require reading levels too advanced for the average reader to comprehend. In addition, most websites were of very poor quality readability, and were therefore less likely to benefit individuals in their decision-making. In an age where most people seek information on the Internet, the lack of easily understood online patient resources reduces the usefulness of these resources for many individuals. Professional organizations and societies like the American Laryngological Association may consider the use of the Health Literacy Online tool as a resource to provide both accurate and easily understandable patient education resources.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Online patient education materials (OPEMs) are an increasingly popular resource for women seeking information about breast cancer. The AMA recommends written patient material to be at or below a 6th grade level to meet the general public's health literacy. Metrics such as quality, understandability, and actionability also heavily influence the usability of health information, and thus should be evaluated alongside readability.PURPOSE: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine: 1) Average readability scores and reporting methodologies of breast cancer readability studies; and 2) Inclusion frequency of additional health literacy-associated metrics.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A registered systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase.com, CENTRAL via Ovid, and ClinicalTrials.gov in June 2022 in adherence with the PRISMA 2020 statement. Eligible studies performed readability analyses on English-language breast cancer-related OPEMs. Study characteristics, readability data, and reporting of non-readability health literacy metrics were extracted. Meta-analysis estimates were derived from generalized linear mixed modeling.RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 30 studies yielding 4462 OPEMs. Overall, average readability was 11.81 (95% CI [11.14, 12.49]), with a significant difference (p < 0.001) when grouped by OPEM categories. Commercial organizations had the highest average readability at 12.2 [11.3,13.0]; non-profit organizations had one of the lowest at 11.3 [10.6,12.0]. Readability also varied by index, with New Fog, Lexile, and FORCAST having the lowest average scores (9.4 [8.6, 10.3], 10.4 [10.0, 10.8], and 10.7 [10.2, 11.1], respectively). Only 57% of studies calculated average readability with more than two indices. Only 60% of studies assessed other OPEM metrics associated with health literacy.CONCLUSION: Average readability of breast cancer OPEMs is nearly double the AMA's recommended 6th grade level. Readability and other health literacy-associated metrics are inconsistently reported in the current literature. Standardization of future readability studies, with a focus on holistic evaluation of patient materials, may aid shared decision-making and be critical to increased screening rates and breast cancer awareness.

Abstract:Owing to the widespread accessibility of the Internet across many technological platforms, it is now recognized as the main source through which individuals seek health-related information. In the United States, over 80 proportion of adult Internet users utilize online search engines to obtain information pertaining to various health-related matters. [ 1 ] Although the information is easily attainable, its efficacy varies depending on its readability. Readability can be described as the characteristics of a text that make it easier to read than others. [ 2 ] Various readability tests are available on the internet. However, in modern linguistics, the Gunning Fox Index (GFI) and Flesch-Kinkaid (FK) readability tests are among the most frequently used instruments. [ 3 ] According to the recommendations set forth by the American Medical Association and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), patient educational materials are advised to maintain a reading level no higher than that of a sixth or 8 grade students .[ 4 , 5 ] However, various studies have demonstrated that the literacy of online patient education materials (PEMs) is significantly above the recommended. [ 6–8 ]

Abstract:Background and purpose: More than 75 million Americans have less than adequate health literacy skills according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Readability scores are used as a measure of how well populations read and understand patient education materials. The purpose of this study was to assess the readability of Web sites dedicated to patient education for radiologic spine imaging and interventions. Materials and methods: Eleven search terms relevant to radiologic spine imaging were searched on the public Internet, and the top 10 links for each term were collected and analyzed to determine readability scores by using 10 well-validated quantitative readability assessments from patient-centered education Web sites. The search terms included the following: x-ray spine, CT spine, MR imaging spine, lumbar puncture, kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, discogram, myelogram, cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. Results: Collectively, the 110 articles were written at an 11.3 grade level (grade range, 7.1-16.9). None of the articles were written at the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health recommended 3rd-to-7th grade reading levels. The vertebroplasty articles were written at a statistically significant (P < .05) more advanced level than the articles for x-ray spine, CT spine, and MR imaging spine. Conclusions: Increasing use of the Internet to obtain health information has made it imperative that on-line patient education be written for easy comprehension by the average American. However, given the discordance between readability scores of the articles and the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health recommended guidelines, it is likely that many patients do not fully benefit from these resources.
