Abstract:Flooding in the floodplain of Amazonian black‐water rivers results in the selection of different tree lineages, thus promoting coexistence between species. We investigated whether Amazonian tree communities are phylogenetically structured and distributed along a flooding gradient, from irregularly flooded forests along streams embedded in highland forests (terra‐firme) to seasonally flooded floodplains of large rivers (igapós). The results show that forests subject to prolonged seasonal flooding had reduced taxon richness, low phylogenetic diversity, and random distribution of lineages within communities, while riparian forests in streams had higher rates of taxon richness, diversity, and phylogenetic dispersion, in addition to greater phylogenetic endemism. Different adaptations to root waterlogging are likely requirements for colonization in these environments and may represent an important factor in the diversification of tree lineages in the Amazon biome. Floristic inventories and hydrological monitoring were performed along the Falsino River, a black‐water river in the eastern Amazon within the Amapá National Forest. We constructed a presence‐and‐absence matrix and generated a phylogeny using the vascular plant database available in GenBank. We calculated the standardized values of the metrics of phylogenetic diversity (ses.PD), average phylogenetic distance (ses.MPD), and average nearest‐neighbor distance (ses.MNTD) to test whether the history of relationships between species in the community is influenced by inundation. We used the phylogenetic endemism (PE) metric to verify the existence of taxa with restricted distribution. Linear regressions were used to test whether phylogenetic metrics have a significant relationship with the variables: maximum flood height, maximum water table depth, and maximum flood amplitude. The results show that forests subject to prolonged seasonal flooding have reduced taxon richness, low phylogenetic diversity, and random distribution of lineages within communities. On the other hand, terra‐firme riparian forests showed higher rates of taxon richness, diversity, and phylogenetic dispersion, in addition to greater phylogenetic endemism. These results indicate that seasonal and predictable soil flooding filters tree lineages along the hydrographic gradient. Different adaptations to root waterlogging are likely requirements for colonization in these environments and may represent an important factor in the diversification of tree lineages in the Amazon biome.

Abstract:In this study, we characterized and compared vegetation types associated with geomorphological units susceptible to distinct flooding levels. Differences in vegetation are related to landform variations. We aimed to 1) characterize the vegetation structure and quantify community compositional differences among landforms and 2) compare landforms soil characteristics and how these correlate with the tree vegetation. The study area is located in the Brazilian Caatinga domain, near the Verde Grande river, a tributary of São Francisco river (14°54′38ʺS, 43°42′53ʺW). We allocated six plots in each of the five landforms sampled (from wettest to driest sites): 1) marginal dike (RF – riparian forest), 2) upper terrace (RWF – riparian wetland forest), 3) lower terrace (WF – wetland forest), 4) lower plain (OFF – occasionally flooded forest) and 5) upper plain (UF – unflooded forest). We ran a non‐metric multidimensional scaling, produced a Venn diagram, and performed a principal component analysis (PCA) on the soil data (compared through a Tukey test at 5% significance after a significant ANOVA). A total of 1422 individuals, 26 families, 70 genera and 89 species were recorded. The NMDS revealed two distinct floristic groups: one group is associated with landforms with assumed higher flood frequency (RF, RWF, WF) and one with less frequently flooded landforms (OFF and UF). The RF, OFF, and UF landforms contained exclusive species (that only occurred in the plots of a particular landform). The species Geofroea spinosa (Fabaceae) was responsible for 70% of the total biomass recorded in the landforms RWF and WF. The soil analysis showed a gradient of soil acidity and fertility related to water saturation, whereby the most frequently flooded plots had the highest acidity values and highest fertility. We found that flood‐related conditions significantly influence tree community structure and species distribution in this floodplain in the Brazilian Caatinga domain.

Abstract:Shifts in hydrological regimes alter river flow rates and flood pulses, decrease environmental heterogeneity and the floristic-structural complexity of associated plant communities. We tested the hypothesis that drought events affect plant community composition and structure at a small-scale within a riparian fragment towards a reduction in floristic-structural complexity. The tree community was sampled in three habitats (wet, transitional and dry) and monitored in seven inventories carried out between 1991 and 2018. Hydrological variations were evaluated through annual rainfalls, river flow rates and water level data. The species richness and the detrended correspondence analysis axes were used to characterise the temporal modifications in floristic composition. Community structure was described in terms of biomass: accumulated, growth of survivors, mortality and recruitment. Generalised linear mixed models were fitted to evaluate the effects of time and environment in community. It was concluded that the climate has become drier in recent years due to declining precipitation that has affected flow rates and water levels. The floristic-structural complexity of the study fragment was maintained during the monitoring period. However, prolonged and extreme drought events displayed the potential to impact floristic-structural patterns.

Abstract:Wetlands harbor an important compliment of regional plant diversity, but in many regions data on wetland diversity and composition is still lacking, thus hindering our understanding of the processes that control it. While patterns of broad-scale terrestrial diversity and composition typically correlate with contemporary climate it is not clear to what extent patterns in wetlands are complimentary, or conflicting. To elucidate this, we consolidate data from wetland forest inventories in Brazil and examine patterns of diversity and composition along temperature and rainfall gradients spanning five biomes. We collated 196 floristic inventories covering an area >220 ha and including >260,000 woody individuals. We detected a total of 2,453 tree species, with the Amazon alone accounting for nearly half. Compositional patterns indicated differences in freshwater wetland floras among Brazilian biomes, although biomes with drier, more seasonal climates tended to have a larger proportion of more widely distributed species. Maximal alpha diversity increased with annual temperature, rainfall, and decreasing seasonality, patterns broadly consistent with upland vegetation communities. However, alpha diversity-climate relationships were only revealed at higher diversity values associated with the uppermost quantiles, and in most sites diversity varied irrespective of climate. Likewise, mean biome-level differences in alpha-diversity were unexpectedly modest, even in comparisons of savanna-area wetlands to those of nearby forested regions. We describe attenuated wetland climate-diversity relationships as a shifting balance of local and regional effects on species recruitment. Locally, excessive waterlogging strongly filters species able to colonize from regional pools. On the other hand, increased water availability can accommodate a rich community of drought-sensitive immigrant species that are able to track buffered wetland microclimates. We argue that environmental conditions in many wetlands are not homogeneous with respect to regional climate, and that responses of wetland tree communities to future climate change may lag behind that of non-wetland, terrestrial habitat.

Abstract:AimEvaluating how groups of organisms vary in dispersal capability and how environmental, spatial and temporal signals vary across multiple scales is critical to elucidating metacommunity theory. We examined whether the relative contributions of environmental, spatial and hydrological factors have different effects on organismal groups with different dispersal abilities at three spatial scales, and how this knowledge contributes to our understanding of metacommunity dynamics. LocationFour major Brazilian floodplains, with the largest distance among them of 2,300 Km. Taxon10 aquatic organismal groups, ranging from bacterioplankton to fish. MethodsWe sampled lakes connected to the main river in the low‐ and high‐water periods of each floodplain between 2011 and 2012. Different biological groups were analysed across three hierarchical spatial scales (fine, intermediate and subcontinental) within and between floodplain systems. We applied a series of partial redundancy analyses to estimate the relative contributions of environmental factors, spatial factors and hydrological period for each biological group. ResultsAt the fine spatial scale, predominantly environmental factors and hydrological period structure metacommunities, although less so for microorganisms than for micro‐invertebrates and macro‐organisms. The relative importance of environmental factors increased at the intermediate spatial scale. At the subcontinental scale, the relative importance of spatial factors increased for all biological groups, but environmental factors remained the primary regulators of microorganisms even at the largest scale. Main conclusionsThis study design allowed us to make more robust inferences about the mechanisms responsible for regulating community structure of distinct biological groups at different spatial scales. Our results suggest that biological groups displaying distinct body size likely determine the spatial extent at which environmental, spatial and hydrological processes prevail as the primary regulators of community structure. These findings are important in guiding the conservation and management of floodplain biodiversity because these systems are naturally highly heterogeneous in space and time.

Abstract:Global warming has changed climate patterns worldwide causing an increase of extreme weather conditions that have altered annual seasonal hydrological regimes. These extreme climate-driven shifts modify habitat availability and can influence freshwater communities in disruptive ways. Our study investigates how changes in annual seasonal hydrological regimes affect the community structure and the Functional Feeding Groups (FFG) of benthic macroinvertebrates in two Brazilian biodiversity hotspots, the Brazilian Tropical Savannas (a.k.a., Cerrado) and Atlantic Forest biomes. We investigate whether annual variation in precipitation between biomes influence composition, richness, and abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates and their proportions of FFG. We demonstrate that differences in annual precipitation rates affect the composition and abundance, but not richness of benthic macroinvertebrates. Changes in community structure are related to changes in annual precipitation, which modify stream variables. Our findings suggest that annual seasonal changes in hydrological precipitation modify benthic macroinvertebrate communities, especially in Cerrado, where dry seasons are more pronounced. Therefore, annual changes in precipitation rates may disrupt the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in tropical savannas, potentially leading to biodiversity loss.

Abstract:The Amazon floodplain is home to an extremely high diversity of fish, with lakes playing an important role in the establishment of this biological richness. These lacustrine environments are subject to constant fluctuations caused by the annual flood pulse, with local factors and other regional patterns also contributing to the variation in fish community structure. The present study verified how local (depth and transparency of the water, the size and species composition of the macrophyte stands) and regional factors (spatial distribution of the stands and the hydrological phase) influence the structure of the fish community of the floodplain lakes of the Môa River, in northern Brazil. Fish species richness was influenced by the depth of the water and the spatial distribution of the macrophyte stands. Fish species composition was influenced by local environmental variables, spatial structure, and the hydrological phase. However, variation partitioning indicated that only the hydrological phase explained the variation in fish composition. These findings indicate that the local environment, the spatial structure, and the hydrological phase drive changes in the structure of the fish communities associated with aquatic macrophytes in the floodplain lakes of the Amazon basin.

Abstract:Abstract Land-cover change often shifts the distribution of biomass in animal communities. However, the effects of land-cover changes on functional diversity remain poorly understood for many organisms and ecosystems, particularly, for floodplains. We hypothesize that the biomass distribution of fish functional diversity in floodplains is associated with land cover, which would imply that fish traits affect behavioral and/or demographic responses to gradients of land cover. Using data from surveys of 462 habitats covering a range of land-cover conditions in the Amazon River floodplain, we fitted statistical models to explain landscape-scale variation in functional diversity and biomass of all fish species as well as subsets of species possessing different functional traits. Forest cover was positively associated with fish biomass and the strength of this relationship varied according to functional groups defined by life history, trophic, migration, and swimming-performance/microhabitat-use traits. Forty-two percent of the functional groups, including those inferred to have enhanced feeding opportunities, growth, and/or reproductive success within forested habitats, had greater biomass where forest cover was greater. Conversely, the biomass of other functional groups, including habitat generalists and those that directly exploit autochthonous food resources, did not vary significantly in relation to forest cover. The niche space occupied by local assemblages (functional richness) and dispersion in trait abundances (functional dispersion) tended to increase with forest cover. Our study supports the expectation that deforestation in the Amazon River floodplain affects not only fish biomass but also functional diversity, with some functional groups being particularly vulnerable.

Random finite set-based localization and SLAM for highly automated vehicles

Abstract:The majority of research efforts in the automotive community is currently focused on alternative fuel vehicles and highly automated driving. The development of highly automated vehicles is not only promoted by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and automotive suppliers, but especially by well-known IT companies (e.g., Google and NVIDIA). That alone is an indicator for the potential of this direction of research. Despite these combined efforts, highly automated driving will not be available on arbitrary roads in the foreseeable future. This would require an actual understanding of complex driving situations at a level that is currently not possible to implement on computers. Typically, very detailed maps are used in order to still allow for highly automated driving. These maps provide plenty of information about the stationary vehicular environment that could not be detected with equivalent accuracy relying on sensors only. Furthermore, using detailed maps instead of trying to calculate everything online significantly reduces computational cost. However, the exact pose of the vehicle relative to such a map is a mandatory prerequisite in order to facilitate a sensible usage of this source of information. This thesis presents a localization method for highly automated vehicles that are equipped with close-to-market sensors. This localization method is based on the well known Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) algorithm, i.e., in this case the feature-based estimation of the vehicle’s pose using a particle filter. When using MCL, two aspects are of major importance for reaching good performance: The features and the function that is used to determine the particle weights. Features that are especially suitable for the localization of a highly automated vehicle are described within this thesis. These features are provided by different sensors in order to reach a certain degree of redundancy which is definitely needed for safety relevant systems such as highly automated vehicles. The function that is used for determining the particle weights is inspired by Random Finite Set (RFS) Theory which has also been the cornerstone of recent progress in multi-object tracking. Using RFSs to represent the set of measurements and the set of mapped landmarks allows for a mathematically sound method to describe the similarity between those sets, thereby also considering measurement statistics (detection probability, false alarm rate). The proposed localization approach has been utilized successfully during public demonstrations of the highly automated vehicle of the Institute of Measurement, Control and Microtechnology at Ulm University, Germany. The second part of this thesis presents a novel approach to Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). SLAM algorithms have the potential to facilitate generating and updating landmark maps with any vehicle that is capable of detecting the respective landmarks. Currently, only vehicles that are equipped with expensive reference systems can be used for this purpose. The proposed SLAM approach is based on RFS theory as well: Each particle of a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter uses an Labeled Multi-Bernoulli filter to estimate the map of landmarks (RB-LMBSLAM). It is demonstrated by means of simulation that – in cases of high clutter rates – the RB-LMB-SLAM approach outperforms the RB-PHD-SLAM which is well known for its performance in this kind of scenario.
Hydrological and climate intensification induces conservative behavior in the Hydrochorea corymbosa xylem production in a Central Amazon floodplain forest

Abstract:Introduction: Trees from flooded forests have to adjust their xylem hydraulic structure to face the annual flooding and the climatic conditions of the atmosphere. Usually, this adjustment of anatomical tissues in the tropics is driven by drought events inducing conservative behavior and can be recorded annually in tree rings. However, how the flood pulse and the climatic conditions influence the xylem hydraulic structure in floodplain trees is unknown. Methods: To fill this gap, we explore if flooded periods and monthly climate variation affect the annual tree growth and xylem anatomy structure for the tree species Hydrochorea corymbosa (Fabaceae) from the várzea flooded forest in the Central Amazon. We developed a 41-year ring width chronology (1971–2018) and a 30-year time series of xylem anatomy parameters (1988–2018) as mean hydraulic vessel diameter (Dh), vessel frequency (VF), and parenchyma quantity (PQ). We correlated the series with monthly hydrological and climatic data. Results: The hydrological regime did not correlate with annual tree growth in that species as we previously expected but showed correlations with the xylem anatomical structure. High flood levels during the end of the flooding period induced conservative patterns of the anatomical structure, with a negative correlation with Dh (rho June = −0.40, p < 0.05) and a positive correlation with the PQ (rho September/October = 0.42, p < 0.05). These responses show that these trees are responding to flooding similar to the tree responses to drought. Regarding the climatic variation, the annual tree growth showed a negative correlation with the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), after the second half of the flooded period with the strongest correlation happening during the non-flooded period (rho December = −0.66, p < 0. 01). These conservative patterns in tree behavior also happened when the maximum temperature negatively affected the vessel diameter (rho September = −0.42, p < 0.05). Discussion: In that case, we recognized two different moments that the environment is inducing conservative patterns in the xylem structure of those trees: 1) increasing the flood levels and 2) the high evaporative demand during the non-flooded period. In this way, the intensification of the hydrological regime, as well as the strong drought conditions during the non-flooded periods, can be a risk for H. corymbosa in the Central Amazonian floodplains.

Abstract:Microorganisms play an essential role in ecosystem functions. An increasingly used method for conducting functional analyses of a soil microbial community is based on the physiological profile at the community level. This method allows the metabolic capacity of microorganisms to be assessed based on patterns of carbon consumption and derived indices. In the present study, the functional diversity of microbial communities was assessed in soils from seasonally flooded-forest (FOR) and -traditional farming systems (TFS) in Amazonian floodplains flooded with black, clear, and white water. The soils of the Amazon floodplains showed differences in the metabolic activity of their microbial communities, with a general trend in activity level of clear water floodplain > black water floodplain > white water floodplain. The redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that soil moisture (flood pulse) was the most important environmental parameter in determining the metabolic activity of the soil microbial communities in the black, clear, and white floodplains. In addition, the variance partitioning analysis (VPA) indicated that the microbial metabolic activity of the soil was more influenced by water type (41.72%) than by seasonality (19.55%) and land use type (15.28%). The soil microbiota of the white water floodplain was different from that of the clear water and black water floodplains in terms of metabolic richness, as the white water floodplain was mainly influenced by the low substrate use during the non-flooded period. Taken together, the results show the importance of considering soils under the influence of flood pulses, water types, and land use as environmental factors when recognizing functional diversity and ecosystem functioning in Amazonian floodplains.

Impacts of large dams on Amazonian floodplain bird communities

Abstract:Undisturbed floodplain forest in Xingu River. Amazon river floodplains sustain distinct kinds of seasonally flooded habitats along with their specialized biota. River sediment load and geomorphology determine vegetation physiognomy and the occurrence of specialized taxa. Hydropower dams disrupt the annual flooding cycle, affecting the floodplain habitats and associated avifauna. Our goal was to understand how permanent flooding caused by large dams affects taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity of bird communities in two Amazonian rivers with distinct characteristics. We sampled 35 sites, including undisturbed sites and sites impacted by the permanent flooding caused by large dams operating on the Madeira and Xingu rivers since 2012 and 2016, respectively. We recorded 202 bird species through passive acoustic monitoring. We did not find differences in mean species richness between rivers or between impacted vs. undisturbed sites. However, we found species turnover between distinct river basins and between sites. Undisturbed sites were characterized by floodplain specialists and were more phylogenetically clustered and functionally more similar than impacted sites, which were occupied by more generalist species from different phylogenetic clades, with distinct functional traits. By assessing multiple dimensions of bird diversity, we show that permanent flooding leads to extensive changes in the floodplain avifauna, favoring generalist over specialist species and thus reducing the uniqueness of the affected communities. We demonstrate that alpha diversity metrics alone are insufficient to characterize the impacts of river damming on Amazonian floodplain avifauna. Resumo As planícies aluviais da Amazônia têm uma fisionomia particular, variando em estrutura, composição florística e características ecológicas, cada uma associada ao tipo de água e geomorfologia dos rios que as formam. Estas planícies aluviais sustentam vários outros ecossistemas amazônicos e uma avifauna rica, especializada, e geograficamente estruturada. Usinas hidrelétricas interrompem o ciclo anual de inundação, afetando os habitats alagáveis e a avifauna associada. Nosso objetivo foi entender como a inundação permanente causada por grandes barragens afeta a diversidade taxonômica, funcional e filogenética das comunidades de aves em dois rios amazônicos com características distintas. Amostramos 35 locais, incluindo locais não perturbados e locais impactados pela inundação permanente causada por grandes barragens operando nos rios Madeira e Xingu desde 2012 e 2016, respectivamente. Registramos 202 espécies de aves por meio de monitoramento acústico passivo. Não encontramos diferenças na riqueza média de espécies entre rios ou entre locais impactados e não impactados. No entanto, observamos um turnover de espécies entre bacias distintas e entre locais. Locais não perturbados apresentaram uma assembleia de aves especialistas de habitats alagáveis, filogeneticamente mais agrupadas e funcionalmente mais similares do que locais impactados, os quais foram ocupados por espécies generalistas de diferentes clados filogenéticos, com características funcionais distintas. Ao avaliar múltiplas dimensões da diversidade de aves, demonstramos que a inundação permanente leva a extensas alterações na avifauna de florestas alagáveis, favorecendo espécies generalistas em detrimento de especialistas e, portanto, reduzindo a singularidade das comunidades afetadas. Demonstramos que métricas de diversidade alfa isoladamente são insuficientes para caracterizar os impactos do barramento de rios na avifauna de várzeas e igapós da Amazônia. Para monitorar adequadamente os impactos ambientais das barragens, medidas adicionais de mudança na comunidade devem ser padronizadas, com ênfase na substituição de espécies em ambientes inundados sazonalmente.

Abstract:The failure of the Fundão dam devastated a large area of the Atlantic Forest, causing damage to and loss of riparian forests. Considering all the ecological roles of a terrestrial and freshwater community, it is necessary to understand the functioning of riparian forests and their regenerative potential, which will be decisive in selecting actions to restore these ecosystems, especially Atlantic Forest remnants. We evaluated the flora and structure of the regenerating stratum in three riparian vegetation remnants along the Rio Doce basin to support the propagation and restoration of the affected environments. Plots of 5 m × 5 m were made in each area, totalling 77 sampling units. In these plots, all woody individuals with a diameter at soil height (DSH) of at least ≥1 cm and diameter at breast height (1.3 m from the soil) of at least <5 cm were marked, measured (in height and DSH), sampled and identified. A total of 275 species distributed in 47 families were sampled, with Fabaceae the most diverse family and Siparuna guianensis Aubl. the most abundant species. Variation in β diversity was significant, and composition analysis showed that plots of each area tended to cluster. Principal component analysis and linear models showed that the edaphic parameters were not related to the richness and abundance of species in the sampled areas. The areas sampled here serve as a reference for the restoration of impacted areas. This study represents an important step towards knowing the species in reference areas for an active and efficient restoration in impacted areas.

Abstract:More heterogeneous environments allow for greater availability of ecological niches, thus favoring greater species diversity. However, it is not yet established how heterogeneity influences taxonomic and functional beta diversity. Therefore, we aimed to determine how environmental heterogeneity affects the patterns of taxonomic and functional beta diversity of planktonic microcrustaceans in reservoirs in different regions (semiarid and humid) in Northeast Brazil, in addition to verifying the influence of dry and rainy periods on these measures. Sampling from the semiarid region was carried out between 2013 and 2016, while samples from the humid region were collected between 2019 and 2021. Environmental heterogeneity and taxonomic and functional beta diversity were greater in the semiarid region, regardless of the hydrological period. However, regardless of the region, taxonomic beta diversity was greater during the dry period, while functional beta diversity did not differ between periods. Both types of diversity were driven mainly by local factors in the semiarid region, considered a region of high environmental heterogeneity due to the geomorphological and climatic characteristics that differentiate it from other regions. This type of study reinforces the need to conserve these reservoirs, especially those located in the semiarid region, as they support greater variability in species composition and functional traits.

Abstract:We collected soil water percolation and nutrient flux at 60 cm depth to understand variability across topographic, soil texture and seasonal gradients within the remote Central Amazon region of Brazil. Main findings indicate percolation volume and solute concentration generally increase with decreasing elevation and clay content. Low phosphate to nitrate ratios highlight the limitation of phosphorous in highly weathered tropical soils. The empirical relationships of percolation water and nutrient fluxes we observed will provide important benchmarks for Earth System Models. Understanding soil water dynamics and transport of nutrients is challenging in tropical rainforests due to the uniqueness of several properties related to soils, vegetation and seasonality that make relating patterns found in temperate environments to tropical sites difficult. We address the need for better edaphic characterization in tropical environments by investigating soil water percolation rates and chemistry across topographic, soil texture and seasonal gradients in a mature tropical rainforest in Central Amazonia, Brazil. We utilized a passive wick flux meter (e.g., drainage lysimeter) to directly measure real‐time percolation fluxes at 60‐cm depth, and to sample a suite of chemical species across plateau, slope and valley topographic positions. We found percolation flux volume and chemical exports generally increase with decreasing elevation and clay content, which was lowest in the valley. Daily percolation flux was observed to be 2.39 ± 0.44 in plateau, 3.01 ± 0.50 in slope and 6.16 ± 0.83 mm in valley. Most solutes were present in small amounts of 20 mg L−1, even exceeding 100 mg L−1 in the valley. Based on additional isotopic analysis, we speculate high NO3− concentrations are partially an artefact of root decomposition following installation of the flux meters. The empirical relationships we show among percolation volume and nutrient exports under varying topographies and soil textures can improve Earth System Model performance by better constraining ecohydrological relationships to nutrient fluxes, which can in‐turn better illuminate the important factors that govern their behaviour.

Abstract:In 2012, the Native Vegetation Protection Law 12,651 decreased the extent of Areas of Permanent Preservation in Brazil. While previously the distance from water was measured during the rainy season, the new version only considered the extent of the regular watercourse. This change affects conservation and restoration sites, and restoration programs need to be modified based on the new legislation. For instance, more flood‐tolerant species need to be planted, given the higher probability that restoration efforts will be lost during flooding. To identify species suitable for the restoration of such areas, we tested if plants that develop morphological structures to tolerate waterlogging stress are more resistant to hypoxia caused by flooding and can recover better afterwards. We experimentally evaluated survival and morphological or phenological strategies (root dry mass, height, basal diameter, adventitious roots, lenticels, and leaf renewal) of 13 tree species from the Cerrado and Pantanal biomes of Brazil. After 56 days of simulated inundation and 56 days of post‐inundation recovery, we found that all study species were able to survive on waterlogged soil and to recover after the flood, and they can be used to restore periodically flooded riparian forests within the new legal zone. Our study is particularly relevant, as climate change is expected to increase flooding. As environmental laws change and new areas get restored including those in artificially flooded areas, such as on banks of hydroelectric dams, the experimental approach introduced in this study should be replicated with other species from various phytogeographic domains worldwide.

Abstract:River damming by hydroelectric plants interrupts the continuity of rivers and causes the flooding of adjacent terrestrial ecosystems. Assessments of the impacts of major hydroelectric dams on species and the functional responses of communities to flooding are scarce. We used data from eight years of forest monitoring around a - 100-km section of the Madeira River upstream of the Santo Antônio Dam in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia to investigate the effects of forest inundation on estimates of functional diversity and frequency of trait occurrence in pre- and post-flooding anuran assemblages. Lowland forests hosted higher functional diversity and more unique functional composition than unflooded areas sampled before and after reservoir filling. Functional richness was not affected by reservoir filling. Frequencies of arboreal anurans that lay their eggs in tree cavities or water and those that complete larval development in water were higher in flooded forest plots. In unflooded plots during the post-filling stage, there was an increase in the average frequency of nocturnal anurans and a decline in the abundance of fossorial and diurnal species. The average frequency of large-bodied anurans increased after river damming to levels similar to those of flooded plots. Our study indicates that anurans whose reproductive modes are associated with riparian and floodplain forests are most sensitive to permanent reservoir flooding. We recommend that efforts to mitigate the effects of hydropower infrastructure should include the protection of intact seasonally flooded lowland forests.

Abstract:Amazonia's floodplain system is the largest and most biodiverse on Earth. Although forests are crucial to the ecological integrity of floodplains, our understanding of their species composition and how this may differ from surrounding forest types is still far too limited, particularly as changing inundation regimes begin to reshape floodplain tree communities and the critical ecosystem functions they underpin. Here we address this gap by taking a spatially explicit look at Amazonia-wide patterns of tree-species turnover and ecological specialization of the region's floodplain forests. We show that the majority of Amazonian tree species can inhabit floodplains, and about a sixth of Amazonian tree diversity is ecologically specialized on floodplains. The degree of specialization in floodplain communities is driven by regional flood patterns, with the most compositionally differentiated floodplain forests located centrally within the fluvial network and contingent on the most extraordinary flood magnitudes regionally. Our results provide a spatially explicit view of ecological specialization of floodplain forest communities and expose the need for whole-basin hydrological integrity to protect the Amazon's tree diversity and its function.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (E) in the Amazon connects forest function and regional climate via its role in precipitation recycling However, the mechanisms regulating water supply to vegetation and its demand for water remain poorly understood, especially during periods of seasonal water deficits In this study, we address two main questions: First, how do mechanisms of water supply (indicated by rooting depth and groundwater) and vegetation water demand (indicated by stomatal conductance and intrinsic water use efficiency) control evapotranspiration (E) along broad gradients of climate and vegetation from equatorial Amazonia to Cerrado, and second, how do these inferred mechanisms of supply and demand compare to those employed by a suite of ecosystem models? We used a network of eddy covariance towers in Brazil coupled with ancillary measurements to address these questions With respect to the magnitude and seasonality of E, models have much improved in equatorial tropical forests by eliminating most dry season water limitation, diverge in performance in transitional forests where seasonal water deficits are greater, and mostly capture the observed seasonal depressions in E at Cerrado However, many models depended universally on either deep roots or groundwater to mitigate dry season water deficits, the relative importance of which we found does not vary as a simple function of climate or vegetation In addition, canopy stomatal conductance (g's) regulates dry season vegetation demand for water at all except the wettest sites even as the seasonal cycle of E follows that of net radiation In contrast, some models simulated no seasonality in gs, even while matching the observed seasonal cycle of E. We suggest that canopy dynamics mediated by leaf phenology may play a significant role in such seasonality, a process poorly represented in models Model bias in gs and E, in turn, was related to biases arising from the simulated light response (gross primary productivity, GPP) or the intringic water use efficiency of photosynthesis (iWUE). We identified deficiencies in models which would not otherwise be apparent based on a simple comparison of simulated and observed rates of E. While some deficiencies can be remedied by parameter tuning, in most models they highlight the need for continued process development of belowground hydrology and in particular, the biological processes of root dynamics and leaf phenology, which via their controls on E, mediate vegetation-climate feedbacks in the tropics. Abstract:The flood pulse is the main driving force for communities' structure and functioning in river-floodplain systems. High synchrony exists between the hydrological cycle and reproductive cycle events for several fish species. However, species with different reproductive strategies can respond in different ways to the flood regime. Thus, this study intends to evaluate the relationship between the recruitment of different reproductive guilds of freshwater fish and flood attributes (flood duration, maximum annual water level, and delay of flood) from a time series of 20 years in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. The abundance of four guilds was evaluated: (i) long-distance migratory with external fertilization and without parental care (LMEF); (ii) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with external fertilization and without parental care (NEFW); (iii) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with external fertilization and parental care (NEFP); and (iv) non-migratory or short-distance migratory with internal fertilization and without parental care (NIF). Multiple regression analyses were applied between flood attributes and abundance of young-of-the-year or juveniles for each reproductive guild. This study observed a consistent pattern of long-lasting flooding positively influencing the recruitment of all reproductive guilds, while water level intensity and the time of the onset of flooding also influenced some non-migratory strategies. We can conclude that the conservation of fish populations and the maintenance of ecosystem functions and services associated with them need to be considered in the operating protocols of upstream hydroelectric plants, since they are dependent on the flooding controlled by them.
