Abstract:Abstract New experimental vapor pressures in the range 407 K to 460 K and vaporization enthalpy of the ionic liquids (IL) N -alkyl- N -methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquids have been measured using quartz crystal microbalance. The absolute vapor pressures and vaporization enthalpies were compared with analogous pyrrolidinium-based ILs with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion. The evaluated difference in vaporization enthalpy of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions allowed for estimation of corresponding property for a wide set of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion. The results are relevant to chemical engineering calculations of processes involving ILs as reaction and separation media.

Abstract:It is urgent to find a way to capture Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) with the increasing emissions during the expansion of the electronic industry. Due to the strong electron - withdrawing of F atom, the interactions between NF3 and most compounds are quite weak, making the capture of NF3 full of challenges. Herein, a pioneering attempt was made to capture NF3 in Lewis acidic ionic liquids (LAILs). Impressively, under the condition of 313.2 K and 1.0 bar, [Omim][Fe2Cl7] LAILs exhibited high NF3 solubility (0.1801 mol/mol), which is 64 and 180 times higher than that of [Emim][Ac] and [Bmim][PF6] respectively. The interaction mechanism between LAILs and NF3 was proposed with its reversible regeneration, which has been confirmed by FT - IR, Raman, and theoretical calculations. This work reveals a novel insight into industrial prospects and applications of NF3 capture.

Abstract:The ion interactions in two novel ionic liquids containing the asymmetric sulfonimide anion, (difluoromethanesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (DFTFSI), are investigated using 1H–19F Heteronuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (HOESY) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in combination with relaxation measurements, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These methods provide insights into how the different end groups of the anion interact with different regions of the IL cations. The 1H–19F cross-relaxation rates (σ) between different pairs of nuclei measured by HOESY are interpreted based on inter/intra molecular distances and dynamics. The results show that the protonated end of the DFTFSI anion (i.e., the CF2H group) preferentially interacts with the IL cations, while the MD simulations also show evidence of C-H…O hydrogen bonding interactions between DFTFSI and the methoxy-functionalised cation C2O1mpyr, thereby explaining the observed lower ionic conductivity and higher density in this IL as compared to the C3mpyr DFTFSI system.

Abstract:The development of ionic liquids (ILs) with strong hydrogen-bond basicity is of great importance for the application of ILs in liquid-liquid extractions, but a long-standing problem is that the increase in hydrogen-bond basicity of ILs usually comes along with undesired changes in other properties such as reduced lipophilicity, raised melting point, and difficulty of forming biphasic systems with water. Herein, we provided a promising solution to this problem by synthesizing a class of functional phosphonium ILs with the use of biocompatible saturated/unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (carbon number up to 20) as anion precursors, and we also carried out systematic investigations on their physicochemical properties. These long-chain fatty acid ILs (LCFA-ILs) featured very strong hydrogen-bond basicity, up to the top level of all reported solvents, along with good lipophilicity and a wide liquid range. Moreover, the viscosity of LCFA-ILs exhibited only a slight increase with increasing chain length, and the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity could be tuned by a change in the side chain of the phosphonium cation. Excellent extraction efficiency was achieved by applying LCFA-ILs to both aqueous and nonaqueous extractions. The distribution coefficients of specific solutes reached unprecedented values up to 3000-5000, which were 170-650 times higher than those by common ILs and molecular solvents.
A Computational and Spectroscopic Analysis of Solvate Ionic Liquids Containing Anions with Long and Short Perfluorinated Alkyl Chains

Abstract:Anion-driven, nanoscale polar–apolar structural organization is investigated in a solvate ionic liquid (SIL) setting by comparing sulfonate-based anions with long and short perfluorinated alkyl chains. Representative SILs are created from 1,2-bis(2-methoxyethoxy)ethane ("triglyme" or "G3"), lithium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate, and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate. Molecular dynamics simulations, density functional theory computations, and vibrational spectroscopy provide insight into the overall liquid structure, cation–solvent interactions, and cation–anion association. Significant competition between G3 and anions for cation-binding sites characterizes the G3–LiC4F9SO3 mixtures. Only 50% of coordinating G3 molecules form tetradentate complexes with Li+ in [(G3)1Li][C4F9SO3]. Moreover, the SIL is characterized by extensive amounts of ion pairing. Based on these observations, [(G3)1Li][C4F9SO3] is classified as a "poor" SIL, similar to the analogous [(G3)1Li][CF3SO3] system. Even though the comparable basicity of the CF3SO3− and C4F9SO3− anions leads to similar SIL classifications, the hydrophobic fluorobutyl groups support extensive apolar domain formation. These apolar moieties permeate throughout [(G3)1Li][C4F9SO3] and persist even at relatively low dilution ratios of [(G3)10Li][C4F9SO3]. By way of comparison, the CF3 group is far too short to sustain polar–apolar segregation. This demonstrates how chemically modifying the anions to include hydrophobic groups can impart unique nanoscale organization to a SIL. Moreover, tuning these nano-segregated fluorinated domains could, in principle, control the presence of dimensionally ordered states in these mixtures without changing the coordination of the lithium ions.

Abstract:Linear skin diseases may follow Blaschko’s lines, Langer’s relaxed skin tension lines or head zones (dermatomes), thus indicating an embryogenic, hematogenic or neuronal aspect in their pathogenesis. Köbner phenomenon describes the eruption of an inflammatory skin disease following mechanical alteration of the skin. Renbök phenomenon describes an area of non‐involvement in an otherwise generalized skin disease. Wolf’s isotopic response may be understood as a special subtype of Köbner phenomenon, in which one skin disease triggers a second one. Pathogenically unrelated skin diseases may follow a zosteriform distribution, if they are linked to a preceding herpes zoster by Köbner phenomenon, Renbök phenomenon or an isotopic response. We report three instructive patients diagnosed with Wegener’s granulomatosis, cutaneous graft‐versus‐host disease and lichen planus, whose skin manifestations were following or sparing a zosteriform distribution pattern. Köbner phenomenon, Renbök phenomenon or Wolf’s isotopic response may link pathogenically unrelated skin diseases to a zosteriform pattern, which may present diagnostic difficulties even for dermatologists.

Abstract:Mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) and molecular solvents can overcome the drawbacks (high viscosity, high polarity, and high cost) of pure ILs and extend their practical use. The structural and interaction properties of ILs form the bases for understanding their properties. In this work, the structural properties of the mixtures of an IL, 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2OHMIM][Tf2N]), with chloroform, a molecular solvent of weak polarity, in various concentrations were analysed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Excess spectra were used to analyse the infrared spectra. The IL forms a stable ion cluster-CDCl3 complex with CDCl3 in the concentration range investigated. In the ion cluster-CDCl3 complex, the hydrogen atom of CDCl3 forms hydrogen-bonds with the fluorine atoms of the anion. In addition, the chlorine atom of CDCl3 forms a halogen-bond with the oxygen atom of the anion. All the hydrogen and halogen-bonds identified between the [C2OHMIM][Tf2N] ion cluster and CDCl3 exhibit low strength, closed shells, and electrostatically dominant interactions.
Unlocking the Fluorine‐Free Buoy Effect: Surface‐Enriched Ruthenium Polypyridine Complexes in Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Functionalizing metal complex ligands with long, fluorine‐free alkyl side chains, induces pronounced enrichment at the IL/vacuum interface, as confirmed by Angle‐resolved X‐ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Controlling the local concentration of metal complexes at the surface of ionic liquids (ILs) is a highly sought‐after objective due to its pivotal implications in supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysis. Equally important is to avoid per‐ and polyfluorinated substances due to environmental concerns. Herein, we investigate the surface enrichment of Ru polypyridyl complexes with fluorine‐free alkylic side groups of varying lengths and shapes, using the hydrophilic IL [C2C1Im][OAc] as solvent. Additional charged carboxylate groups are included into the polypyridyl ligands to increase the solubility of the complex in the IL. When the ligand system is functionalized with long and hydrophobic alkyl side chains, the complex predominantly localizes at the IL/vacuum interface, as deduced from angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Conversely, in the presence of short or more bulky substituents, no surface enrichment is observed. This buoy‐like behaviour with fluorine‐free side groups is explored for 0.05 %mol to 1 %mol solutions. Intriguingly, surface saturation occurs at approximately 0.5 %mol, which is beneficial to the efficient operation of catalytic systems featuring high surface areas, such as SILP catalysts.

Abstract:This work combined gold colloid probe atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to accurately quantify the molecular interactions of fluorine-free phosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with gold electrode surfaces. First, the interactions of ILs with the gold electrode per unit area (FA', N/m2) were obtained via the force-distance curves measured by gold probe AFM. Second, a QCM was employed to detect the IL amount to acquire the equilibrium number of IL molecules adsorbed onto the gold electrode per unit area (NIL, Num/m2). Finally, the quantified molecular interactions of ILs with the gold electrode (F0, nN/Num) were estimated. F0 is closely related to the IL composition, in which the IL with the same anion but a longer phosphonium cation exhibits a stronger molecular interaction. The changes in the quantified interactions of gold with different ILs are consistent with the interactions predicted by the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, and the van der Waals interaction was identified as the major contribution of the overall interaction. The quantified molecular interaction is expected to enable the direct experimental-derived interaction parameters for molecular simulations and provide the virtual design of novel ILs for energy storage applications.
The Structural Organization in Aqueous Solutions of Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The H-1 NMR combined with the local composition (LC) model has been employed to investigate the structural organization of two aqueous solutions of ionic liquids (ILs), namely 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EmimBF(4)) and n-butylammonium nitrate (N4NO3). The correlation of chemical shifts using the LC model shows that the self-association of IL plays the leading role, and water prefers to interact With IL rather than self-association in IL-rich region. Instead the network of water molecules is established in water-rich region, because the self-association of water predominates. Furthermore. the difference between the local and the bulk composition presents the turnover at x((IL)) (mole fraction of IL) close to 0.6 for EmimBF(4)/water which is in accordance with the change of excess function. Accordingly, it could be presumed that the excess properties for N4NO(3)/water system should behave turnover at x((IL)) approximate to 0.55 since the local and the bulk exhibit maximal difference at this composition. Structure and Dynamics of Hydrofluorocarbon/Ionic Liquid Mixtures: An Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:The physical properties of four ionic liquids (ILs), including 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4C1im][BF4]), 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4C1im][PF6]), 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([C4C1im][SCN]), and 1-n-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C6C1im][Cl]), and their mixtures with hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) gases HFC-32 (CH2F2), HFC-125 (CHF2CF3), and HFC-410A, a 50/50 wt % mixture of HFC-32 and HFC-125, were studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Experiments were conducted to measure the density, self-diffusivity, and shear viscosity of HFC/[C4C1im][BF4] system. Extensive analyses were carried out to understand the effect of IL structure on various properties of the HFC/IL mixtures. Density, diffusivity, and viscosity of the pure ILs were calculated and compared with experimental values. The good agreement between computed and experimental results suggests that the applied force fields are reliable. The calculated center of mass (COM) radial distribution functions (RDFs), partial RDFs, spatial distribution functions (SDFs), and coordination numbers (CNs) provide a sense of how the distribution of HFC changes in the liquid mixtures with IL structure. Detailed analysis reveals that selectivity toward HFC-32 and HFC-125 depends on both cation and anion. The molecular insight provided in the current work will help the design of optimal ILs for the separation of azeotropic HFC mixtures.

Abstract:A detailed NMR study on the possible interactions between a series of imidazolium based ionic liquids (1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide, RmimTf2N, n = 4, 6, 8, 10), and compounds commonly applied in the solvent extraction and separation of 4f and 5f-ions as acidic chelating agents and neutral extractants is presented. The analytical techniques applied are 1H, 13C, 19F and 31P NMR spectra and NOESY experiments. Investigation of the types and strengths of the solvent–solute interactions is necessary for a better understanding of the chemical solubility, reactivity and selectivity, as ILs have a strong influence on the solvent extraction mechanism of metal ions. The goal of the scientific research is to gain insight on the role of ILs as a perspective efficient “green” medium in the solvent extraction processes. The experimental results show that no IL–ligand interactions occurred in chloroform solution independently on the length of the imidazolium alkyl chain or on the structure and acidity of the ligand.Graphical Abstract

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Anion Effect on Solubility, Diffusivity, and Permeability of Carbon Dioxide in Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of CO2 in three ionic liquids with a common cation were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations in order to understand the role of the anion in dictating permeability. The three ionic liquids are 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetracyanoborate ([emim][B(CN)4]), 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([emim][Tf2N]), and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([emim][BF4]). The simulated solubility agrees satisfactorily with experiment with a trend of [emim][B(CN)4] > [emim][Tf2N] > [emim][BF4]. The higher solubility of CO2 in [emim][B(CN)4] appears to be due to weaker cation–anion interaction, higher fraction of larger cavity, larger free volume, and more favorable interaction with CO2. CO2 diffusivity in ILs follows the same trend as solubility. On the basis of the solvation–diffusion mechanism, gas permeability was estimated and compared with experiment. The present work confirms the superiority of tetracyanoborate-based ILs for membrane-based gas separations.

Molecular-Resolution Imaging of Ionic Liquid/Alkali Halide Interfaces with Varied Surface Charge Densities via Atomic Force Microscopy

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) in contact with a charged solid surface are known to form layered solvation structures consisting of alternating cation and anion layers. Understanding the response of these layers to surface charge density is vital for IL-based energy storage systems, but it remains inadequately understood. This is partly due to inconsistent experimental conclusions regarding low surface charge density and scarce experimental results for high surface charge density. Here, we probe the solvation structure of ILs on alkali halide surfaces with varied surface orientations: slightly charged RbI(100) and highly charged RbI(111) surfaces to shed light on the above issues, by employing frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) with a high spatial resolution. Two commonly used ILs, 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C3mpyr][NTf2]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2mim][NTf2]) are selected for this study. On the slightly charged RbI(100) surface, we observe alternating cation and anion layers, diverging from the previously proposed monolayer model for IL/alkali halide(100) interfaces. On the highly charged RbI(111) surface, we find crowded layers, which is hardly observed in commonly used ILs due to typically unreachable surface charge densities in electrochemical IL/electrode systems. Our data experimentally elucidates the response of ILs to surface charge density, being expected to deepen our understanding of IL solvation structures on charged solid surfaces. Specifically, observing multilayers on alkali halide(100) surfaces could reconcile some controversial results regarding low surface charge density, whereas detecting crowded layers on alkali halide(111) surfaces offers a new platform for exploring the crowding phenomenon.

Abstract:This work is focused on the possible capture of nitrous oxide and more precisely protoxide using ionic liquids (ILs). ILs are gaining special attention since the efficiency of many processes can be enhanced by the judicious manipulation of their properties. The absorption of greenhouse gases can be enhanced by the basic character of the IL. In this work, these characteristics are evaluated through the study of the gas-liquid equilibrium of five imidazolium-based ILs: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF(4)]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([BMIM][SCN]), 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylphosphonate ([DMIM][MP]), 1,3-diethoxyimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(ETO)(2)IM][Tf(2)N]), and 1,3-dihydroxyimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(OH)(2)IM][Tf(2)N]) with N(2)O at temperatures up to 373 K and pressures up to 300 bar. Experimental data indicate that 44-105 g of N(2)O can be absorbed per kilograms of IL.
Temperature‐Dependent Surface Enrichment Effects in Binary Mixtures of Fluorinated and Non‐Fluorinated Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Using angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS), we investigate the topmost nanometers of various binary ionic liquid (IL) mixtures at different temperatures in the liquid state. The mixtures consist of ILs with the same [PF6]‐ anion but two different cations, namely 3‐methyl‐1‐(3,3,4,4,4‐pentafluorobutyl)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [PFBMIm][PF6], and 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C4C1Im][PF6], with 10, 25, 50 and 75 mol% content of [PFBMIm][PF6]. We observe a preferential enrichment of the fluorinated chain in the topmost layer, relative to the bulk composition, which is most pronounced for the lowest content of [PFBMIm][PF6]. Upon cooling the mixtures stepwise from 95 °C until surface charging effects in XPS indicate solidification, we observe a pronounced increase in surface enrichment of the fluorinated chain with decreasing temperature in the liquid state. In contrast to the mixtures with lower [PFBMIm][PF6] contents, cooling the 75 mol% mixture additionally shows an abrupt decrease of the fluorinated chain signal before complete solidification occurs, which is assigned to partial precipitation effects.

Abstract:Promoting fluid transportation in porous media has important applications in energy, pedology, bioscience, etc. For this purpose, one effective way is to prevent swelling through surface modification; however, it is far from enough in real cases, such as ultra-low permeability reservoirs and tight oils. In this study, we considered the comprehensive effects of inhibiting clay swelling, flocculation performance, reducing water clusters and interfacial tension and developed a series of imidazole-based tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids (ILs) with different lengths of alkyl chains. Through measurements of anti-swelling rates, XRD, SEM, 17O NMR, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential, flocculation evaluation, interfacial tension and a core flooding experiment based on ultra-low permeability reservoirs, the relationships between the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of ILs have been revealed. Interestingly, one of the selected ILs, imidazole-based tetrafluoroborate ILs (C8-OMImBF4), shows excellent performance, which is helpful to design an effective strategy in promoting fluid transportation in narrow spaces.

Abstract:A method for the controlled filling of pores in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with ionic liquids (ILs) has been proposed, which can be applied for selective gas sorption in MOFs. Using an example of MOF ZIF-8 and IL [BMIm] + [BF 4 ] − , composites with different IL content have been prepared with monitoring by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of nitroxide spin probes. The effect of IL on the sorption of nitrogen(II) oxide into these composites has been studied using inversion gas chromatography.

Abstract:The fluoride ion battery (FIB) is a post-lithium anionic battery that utilizes the fluoride-ion shuttle, achieving high theoretical energy densities of up to 1393 Wh/L while eliminating the reliance on critical minerals. However, developing liquid elec- trolytes for FIBs has proven arduous due to a combination of low solubility of flu- oride salts and the chemical reactivity of the fluoride ion. By introducing a novel and chemically stable fluoride electrolyte based on 1,3-dimethylimidazolium [MMIm] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide[TFSI]andtetramethylammoniumfluoride(TMAF), we achieve electrochemical stability window (ESW) of 4.65 V, ionic conductivity of 9.53 1 mS cm−1, and a TMAF solubility of 0.67 m. The origin of this high salt solubility and the solvation structure were investigated using both NMR spectroscopy and neutron total scattering, showing a fluoride solvation driven by strong electrostatic interactions and weak hydrogen bonding with no covalent H—F character. This indicates the chemical stability of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium towards the fluoride ion and its potential as an electrolyte for high-voltage FIBs.

Abstract:In practical applications, ionic liquids (ILs) are usually used in mixtures with polar solvents to reduce the cost of neat ILs and to manipulate their physicochemical properties. To apply such mixtures in a targeted manner, it is necessary to know the influence of the solvents on the properties of the ILs. In this work, the microscopic structure and hydrogen bonding interactions between 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (EMIMFSI) and three polar solvents (methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethylsulfoxide) are investigated by employing spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical calculations. For neat EMIMFSI, hydrogen bonds are a secondary factor to decide the microscopic structure, which is significantly different to most other imidazolium-based ILs. Particular attention is given to the imidazolium ring C2H group in the neat IL and its mixtures with the three solvents. Our results show that CH3CN cannot break the strong electrostatic interactions in the [EMIM]+–[FSI]− ion pair. In contrast, CH3OH and DMSO can break them to form [EMIM]+-solvent complexes. Due to the fact that DMSO can form stronger hydrogen bonds with EMIMFSI, more [EMIM]+-solvent complexes can be found in the EMIMFSI–DMSO mixtures. The results indicate that solvents can influence the microscopic structure of the ILs and thereby change the properties in a targeted fashion.
