Abstract:Objective: This study aims to assess the level of awareness and knowledge regarding the first aid management of foreign body aspiration (FBA) in children among various demographic groups. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, involving 500 participants. The survey included questions about demographic information and knowledge of FBA management. The data were analyzed to identify significant differences in awareness levels based on gender, age, nationality, educational background, occupational status, and marital status. Results: The study found significant differences in awareness levels across various demographic groups. Females (80.2%) demonstrated higher awareness compared to males (71.5%), with a significant p-value of 0.035. Participants aged 30-39 years had the highest awareness (83.6%), though the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.057). Nationality did not significantly affect awareness levels. However, educational background showed variations, with postgraduate degree holders having somewhat lower awareness (65.9%) compared to bachelor's degree holders (78.1%), though this difference was not significant (p=0.271). Occupational status had a significant impact, with military personnel displaying the highest awareness (100%) and business professionals the lowest (67.7%), with a significant p-value of 0.009. Marital status also influenced awareness, with married individuals showing higher awareness (82.8%) compared to single (74.4%) and divorced (65.5%) individuals, with a significant p-value of 0.040. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for targeted educational programs to enhance first aid knowledge across different demographic groups. By addressing gaps in awareness through comprehensive training, especially among groups with lower awareness levels, we can improve the general population's ability to manage FBA incidents effectively, thereby reducing associated morbidity and mortality in children.

Abstract:Background: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a common issue in pediatric emergencies, with regional variations. Various cultures and foods, parents' and physicians' inadequate experience, and lack of bronchoscopy equipment are some attributable factors in the regional variation of FBA. Aim: To more accurately represent the demographic characteristics of aspirated foreign bodies (FBs) across various continents, this review attempted to provide organized information based on the reviewed articles. Methodology: A search was conducted in PubMed/PubMed Central, EMBASE, and google scholar. From the 36 included articles, information on age, gender, bronchoscopy type, type of FB, location, history of choking, and time elapsed between aspiration and admission were extracted. Results: A total of 14,469 cases were evaluated. According to the findings, children under two accounted for more than 75% of FBAs. Nuts and seeds were the most common FBs in most countries, whereas plastic and metal objects had higher rates in Brazil, and calcified objects were more prevalent in Thailand. The right bronchus was the most frequent location, and rigid bronchoscopy was the most often utilized type of bronchoscope. In addition, a significant percentage of patients were referred to the emergency rooms in the first 12-24 h following the aspiration incident. Moreover, Asian patients reported more choking history, and Europeans had fewer witnesses of FBA. Conclusions: There is a lack of standardized reporting systems and organized guidelines in pediatric FBA. To select the ideal time for endoscopies and create educational programs, a collaboration between experienced researchers, pediatric pulmonologists, radiologists, and otolaryngologists is required.
A Retrospective Analysis of Foreign Body Ingestions Among the Pediatric Age Group in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Foreign body ingestion (FBI) among the pediatric age group is considered a major clinical problem that can cause life-threatening complications, as it can obstruct the airway due to poor/immature airway protection reflexes. Objective: In this study, we aimed to retrospectively describe the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of FBI among the pediatric age group in Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of pediatric patients (0-14 years) presenting to a tertiary care hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January 2019 to October 2022. The study reviewed records of patients with FBI in the emergency department. Data collection included age, gender, comorbidities, foreign body (FB) type, anatomical location, presenting symptoms, time to emergency room (ER) presentation, need for endoscopy, and complications. We performed a statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 25 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY), where p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: We identified 244 FBI cases, with most cases being male (62.7%). The most common site of FB impaction was the stomach (38.9%), followed by the upper esophagus (29.1%). Clinical presentation was variable, with 20.5% of cases experiencing vomiting, 13.5% experiencing drooling, and 9.4% experiencing dysphagia. Out of 244 cases, 132 (54.1%) were referred to gastroenterology for urgent FB removal by endoscopy. A total of 186 cases (76.2%) did not have complications, whereas 3.6% had serious sequela. The association between age and FBI was statistically significant (p=0.00), whereas there was no association between gender and FBI. Conclusion: Our results showed that FB ingestion was prevalent among children at our tertiary care hospital, with urgent endoscopy being the most common removal procedure. Early detection and immediate presentation to the emergency room are crucial for preventing complications. Common FBI included coins and batteries, with most incidents in 1-3-year-old males. Parents should be aware of the dangers of FBI and implement preventive measures to reduce its incidence.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Foreign body aspiration and obstruction are the main cause of accidental death in childhood, and Foreign bodies (FBs) in the aerodigestive tract provide diagnostic and therapeutic problems and are significant sources of morbidity and mortality. Lack of community awareness toward the FBA presentation and its management further aggravate the problem. Despite this, there are very few studies in this area which necessitates further study. Therefore the present study may help as an output to increase parents' awareness towards immediate first aid intervention, in preventing delayed healthcare access and intervention at a community level in general. Objective: Assessing the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards the first aid management of foreign body aspiration and obstruction among parents of children coming to St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Methods: A descriptive-based cross-sectional study was carried out in the study area using pretested, structured, and self-administered questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with the Knowledge, attitude, and practice of parents towards first aid management of foreign body aspiration and obstruction. Results: A total of 423 parents were involved in the study. Only 218 (51.5%) of them were knowledgeable. Most of the respondents (76.3%) had a positive attitude towards foreign body aspiration and obstruction first aid. 123 (29.1%) and 233 (51.1%) agreed and strongly agreed that foreign body aspiration needs immediate intervention, and 75 (17.7%) faced a child who aspirated foreign body. Of these, only 53 (70.7%) had provided first aid to the victim. Most of the respondents 40 (75.5%)had scored below 80% of practice towards foreign body aspiration and obstruction. Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis showed that parents who are literates were 3.6 times more knowledgeable than those illiterates. (AOR:3.612, 95% CI: 1.758, 7.420, P≤0.05). Conclusions: The level of knowledge and skills for providing first aid for foreign body aspiration, and obstruction in children among parents are low. So education and increasing awareness among them to reduce morbidity and mortality in children suffering from aspiration and obstruction from foreign bodies has to be one of the strategies

Safety Practices in Al-Baha: A Cross-Sectional Study on Parental Awareness of Child Choking Events

Abstract:Background: Instances of choking continue to pose a concern for the health and safety of children. This study aims to assess parents' understanding, awareness, and perspectives on child choking. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia from September 13, 2023, to October 3, 2023. Data collection was done via an electronically validated questionnaire among parents aged 18 years and above, covering knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Any result below 0.05 (p < 0.05) was considered significant. Results: Out of 819 participants, 705 individuals were included in the analysis. The results indicated that there was a good level of knowledge (55%) regarding handling child choking situations. Interestingly, females demonstrated higher levels of awareness compared to males (79.4% versus 20.6%). Attitudes toward managing child choking incidents were rated as overall moderate, with 66.5% showing poor practices, such as being hesitant to seek medical assistance if symptoms improved. A majority of choking cases occurred at home (85%), underscoring the importance of enhancing intervention strategies through increased knowledge dissemination. Notably, the internet and social media platforms (71.8%) emerged as primary sources of information on dealing with child choking incidents. There was significant interest in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes (69.2%), although many people found it hard to make time for them (45%). Conclusions: Parents in the Al-Baha area seem to have a good understanding but some concerning attitudes when it comes to child choking situations. It is important to spread awareness, correct misconceptions, and encourage CPR training.

Abstract:Background and aim: Childhood choking is a global health concern that mainly affects children under the age of 5 years. The parent's and caretaker's responsibility is critical in the children's lives and can potentially influence the result of at-home injuries such as choking. We aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors of first aid management toward choking hazards among Saudi adults from the Eastern Province. Methods: The present analytical study was carried out among 390 Saudi adults attending different primary health centers in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. We used a standard and validated data research topic tool to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice. Spearman's correlation was applied to determine the correlation between each section, while binomial logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the associated factors. Results: We observed knowledge, attitude, and practice scores in 43.3, 38.9, and 36.4% of the participants, respectively. Furthermore, positive correlations between knowledge and attitude (rho = 0.42, p = 0.001), between knowledge and practice (rho = 0.57, p = 0.001), and between attitude and practice (rho = 0.41, p = 0.001) were revealed in our survey. The knowledge of the participants was significantly higher with the age group of 30–40 years [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.67 (1.94–4.65), p = 0.001] and participants who received training in first aid management [AOR = 1.64 (1.12–2.49), p = 0.037]. This study found that males [AOR = 0.36 (0.21–0.63), p = 0.001] and those working in the private sector [AOR = 0.61 (0.31–0.87), p = 0.018] had significantly lower attitudes. Conclusion: Our results underscore the importance of continuous health education initiatives and training courses at primary health care centers regarding first aid management of choking hazards to improve awareness and practices. Furthermore, we recommend prospective multicenter studies to address region-specific knowledge gaps.

Demographic and Clinical Findings in Children Undergoing Bronchoscopy for Foreign Body Aspiration

Abstract:Background: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a significant cause of airway distress, mortality, and morbidity in children. Diagnosis of FBA can be challenging and is sometimes delayed for weeks or even months. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, FBA can result in serious consequences. Methods: For this retrospective study, we investigated the medical records of 89 children who underwent bronchoscopy for suspected FBA and recorded relevant demographic, clinical, and treatment data. Results: Of the 89 patients identified for this study, 51 had a definitive diagnosis of FBA. Among these patients, choking, chronic cough and wheezing, cyanosis, and dyspnea were the most frequent symptoms of FBA. The foreign bodies were located in the left bronchus (45.1%), the right bronchus (35.3%), the trachea (15.7%), and in both the right and left bronchi (3.9%). Seeds were the most prevalent foreign body, found in 39.2% of the patients. Conclusion: Lack of complete medical history in patients with suspected FBA is one of the main causes of delayed FBA diagnosis. Bronchoscopy is considered the definitive diagnostic method for FBA and should be conducted in all patients with suspected FBA because of the low risk of complications and reduced probability that FBA diagnosis and treatment will be delayed.
Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration in children in Soweto, South Africa: A retrospective descriptive study

Abstract:Background: Airway foreign bodies are a common cause of accidental death in children. Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration (FBA) can result in severe immediate and long-term complications if the foreign body is not identified and removed. Little is known about the burden of tracheobronchial FBA in the Soweto area, south of Johannesburg, South Africa. Objectives. To describe the burden and clinical characteristics of tracheobronchial FBA in hospitalised children in a tertiary-level hospital in Johannesburg. Methods: This was a retrospective, single-centre, descriptive study of children aged <10 years who presented to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2020. Children with FBA were identified from the paediatric pulmonology and paediatric surgery databases using the relevant International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10), codes (T17.4 and T17.5). Clinical and radiological data were extracted from medical records and the databases. Results: Forty-seven children with FBA were identified during the study period. Overall, the incidence of FBA among children aged <10 years of age was 1.42 per 100 000 person-years (95.0% confidence interval 1.04 - 1.88). FBA occurred more commonly in males (66.0%; n=31), and the mean (standard deviation) age at presentation was 68 (28.2) months. Most of the children (42.6%) were in the 7 - <10-year age group, followed by the 5 - <7-year age group (27.7%). Chronic respiratory symptoms were reported in one-third of the children, and a history of witnessed FBA was reported in only 59.6% of cases. Inorganic foreign bodies (n=29; 61.7%) were aspirated more commonly than organic foreign bodies; these included metal objects such as pins or springs (21.3%), toy parts (17.0%), pen or pencil lids/stoppers (12.8%) and plastic objects (6.4%). Conclusion: Our study highlights the fact that tracheobronchial FBA is prevalent in school-aged children, and public safety campaigns targeted at this age group are warranted. Furthermore, to prevent sequelae, a high index of suspicion in required in children with respiratory symptoms that fail to respond to appropriate therapy. Study synopsis: What the study adds. Our study demonstrated that tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration (FBA) was most prevalent in school-aged children (7 - <10 years of age), which is in contrast to studies that have reported a high prevalence in children aged <3 years. Chronic respiratory symptoms were reported in only a third of the children, and a history of witnessed FBA was reported in only 59.6%. Chest radiographs were normal in a high proportion of cases in which a chest radiograph was done (56.3%). Inorganic foreign bodies were aspirated more commonly than organic foreign bodies.Implications of the findings. Public safety campaigns should be targeted at school-aged children in Soweto, South Africa. Clinicians should investigate children with respiratory symptoms suggestive of FBA, even if a history is not forthcoming. Furthermore, to prevent long-term respiratory sequelae, a high index of suspicion in required in children with respiratory symptoms that fail to respond to appropriate therapy.
Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of Parents Regarding Early Childhood Caries Prevention of Preschool Children in Western Region of Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:The knowledge and beliefs of parents have an impact on their children's general and oral health. The objective of this study is to assess knowledge, attitude, and behavior of parents and identify possible associated factors of early childhood caries (ECC) in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Parents aged 18 and older were invited to complete a self-administered, validated questionnaire. Questions covered demographics, knowledge, attitude, and behavior regarding ECC etiology and prevention. Of the 644 parents who completed the questionnaire, 51.4% were not aware of the early signs of tooth decay, such as white lines. Pain and trauma were reported as the major reasons for a child to visit a dentist (42.4%). Only 37% of parents were aware of the importance of fissure sealant, and only 23% knew how it is applied. Compared with mothers, fathers were significantly less aware of hidden sugar and the relation between the frequency of consuming breast milk or bottled milk and caries development (p = 0.001). Similarly, fathers were more likely to believe that children could achieve effective teeth cleaning without parental assistance (p = 0.001). Preventive guidance should be provided by oral healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia to improve parents' knowledge of ECC prevention.

Abstract:Background: Foreign body aspiration commonly occurs in young children and is associated with high degree of mortality and morbidity. The objectives of this study were to determine epidemiologic, clinical and endoscopic perspectives of foreign body aspiration in children of District D.I.Khan, Pakistan. Materials & Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in Department of ENT, Gomal Medical College/ DHQ Teaching Hospital, D.I.Khan, Pakistan from November 2017-April 2019. 105 children with suspected foreign body (FB) aspiration were included. All patients underwent rigid bronchoscopy under GA. After check X-ray and one day observation, they were discharged. Variables were sex, age in years and age groups, successful removal, mortality, history of FB aspiration, cough, wheezing, choking, stridor, reduced air entry and location of FB. Age in years was numeric, age groups ordinal and all other variables were on nominal scale. Age in years was described by mean & SD and others by count and percentage. Results: The sample with suspected foreign body aspiration (n=105) included 61 (58.1%) boys and 44 (41.9%) girls, with 20 (19.05%) in age group 0-2.0 years, 58 (55.24%) 2.0-5.0 years and 27 (25.71%) 5.0-14 years. Chest X-Ray was done in 98/105 (93.33%) cases. Frequency of successful FB removal by rigid bronchoscopy was 86/105 (81.90%). Mortality was none. Out of 86 confirmed cases, 51 (59.30%) were boys and 35 (40.70%) girls, with 19 (22.10%) in age group 0-2.0 years, 55 (63.95%) 2.0-5.0 years and 12 (13.95%) 5.0-14 years. Mean age was 3.57±1.78. History of FB aspiration was in 75/86 (87.21%), cough 65 (75.58%), stridor 14 (16.28%), wheezing 54 (62.79%) and choking 28 (32.56%) cases. Reduced air entry was 44 (51.16%) on right side, 17 (19.77%) on left side and 25 (29.05%) bilateral. Location of FB was larynx 6 (9.98%), trachea 20 (23.26%), right bronchus 44 (51.16%) and left bronchus 16 (18.60%). Conclusions: Foreign body aspiration in children in not an uncommon event. The parents should try to prevent such event, and if there, should present the child to emergency department of a hospital. ENT surgeons are supposed to evaluate and plan an earlier intervention as rigid bronchoscopy for these children.
A real-world study of foreign body aspiration in children with 4227 cases in Western China

Abstract:Abstract The early diagnosis and treatment of foreign body aspiration (FBA) can significantly improve the overall prognosis of children. There are significant differences in the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of FBA in different regions. Therefore, we conducted a real-world study in the western region of China with over 4000 patients. The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of FBA in terms of its types, the specific months of its occurrence, and the distribution of primary caregiver characteristics in western China. We collected the clinical and epidemiological data of children who were diagnosed with FBA in our hospital over the past 20 years through a big data centre. We matched the data of healthy children who underwent routine physical examinations at the paediatric health clinic during the same period to analyse the differences in the data of actual guardians. A total of 4227 patients from five provinces were included in this study. Foreign bodies were removed by rigid bronchoscopy in 99.4% (4202/4227) of patients, with a median age of 19 months and a median surgical duration 16 min. January was the most common month of onset for 1725 patients, followed by February, with 1027 patients. The most common types of foreign objects were melon peanuts, seeds and walnuts, accounting for 47.2%, 15.3%, and 10.2%, respectively. In the FBA group, the proportion of grandparents who were primary caregivers was 70.33% (2973/4227), which was significantly greater than the 63.05% in the healthy group (2665/4227) (P < 0.01). FBA most commonly occurs in January and February. More than 60% of FBAs occur between the ages of 1 and 2 years, and the incidence of FBA may be greater in children who are cared for by grandparents. A rigid bronchoscope can be used to remove most aspirated foreign bodies in a median of 16 min.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Foreign body aspiration (FBA) into the tracheobronchial tree is a common problem in children necessitating prompt recognition and management. This study aimed to report our experience in airway foreign body removal by flexible bronchoscopy in children.METHODS:A total of 1027 patients with FBA were reviewed retrospectively. They were 626 boys and 401 girls aged from 5 months to 14 years with a median age of 17 months. The clinical manifestations, radiological findings, bronchoscopic findings and complications of the procedure were analyzed.RESULTS:Among the patients, only 53.4% had a definite history of FBA. The most frequent symptom was paroxysmal cough (84.3%), followed by stridor or wheezing, fever and dyspnea. Chest X-ray showed emphysema in 68.8% of the patients, atelectasis in 13.3% and bronchopneumonia in 56.3%. A bronchoscope was inserted intranasally in most children, but through mouth and endotracheal tube in 17 and 3 children, respectively. Foreign bodies were removed successfully by flexible bronchoscopy with disposable grasping forceps or biopsy forceps in 938 (91.3%) of the patients. The other 89 patients turned to rigid bronchoscopy. During the procedures, 132 (12.9%) of the patients showed transient hypoxia, which was alleviated by oxygen supplement and/or temporary cessation of the procedure. A small amount of bleeding was found in 17 patients and bradycardia in 3. Air leak and laryngeal edema were noted in 2 patients and relieved within 24 hours.CONCLUSIONS:Flexible bronchoscopy is useful and safe in retrieving airway foreign bodies in children. With skilled personnel and perfect equipments, flexible bronchoscopy could be considered as the first choice for the removal of airway foreign body.

Abstract:Seventy-five consecutive patients with pilonidal sinus disease were randomized to receive either Eusol dressings or Silastic foam dressings. Patients were divided into those with pilonidal sinus and pilonidal abscess. There was no significant difference between time to hospital discharge or time to full healing in either group. The cost benefits and simplicity of Silastic foam dressing are discussed.

Abstract:The diagnosis of tracheobronchial foreign body (FB) aspiration in children is often delayed or overlooked. The aim of this study is to examine the causes of delay (>1 month) in the diagnosis and to study the complications of late presentation and their management. During the period between July 1993 and August 2002, 128 patients with suspected FB aspiration were admitted to KKUH, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Twenty-eight patients out of 128 patients presented late (>1 month). The medical records of those 28 patients were reviewed in respect to: history of FB aspiration, physical signs of symptoms, reason for delayed presentation, radiological investigation, complications and their management, and follow-up. There were 16 males and 12 females; the average age was 3.28 years (range 1--11 years). All of them experienced chronic cough at presentation. Thirteen (48 per cent) children had a history suggestive of FB aspiration. Seventeen (63 per cent) children presented with complications that included pneumonia (n=13), bronchiectasis (n=3), and bronchoesophageal fistula (n=1). The diagnostic delay was attributed to physician misdiagnosis (n=9), failure by parents to seek early medical advice (n=4), patients left against medical advice (n=1), and the cause of delay was unknown in the remaining 14 children. Rigid bronchoscopy was performed in all patients. FB was found in all cases except four. Complications were treated as follows: pneumonia with intravenous antibiotics, bronchiectasis conservatively and bronchoesophageal fistula repaired surgically. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 48 months. Diagnostic delay of tracheobronchial FB aspiration has significant morbidity in children. A high index of suspicion and early referral are essential in preventing such complications.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchial foreign body (FB) aspiration (FBA) is a life-threatening emergency mostly observed in childhood and advanced age. With early diagnosis, the FB can be removed using bronchoscopic methods without causing irreversible damage.METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study. Subjects diagnosed with FBA via either bronchoscopic methods and/or radiological findings, having no medical history of aspirated FB, and who were detected to have aspirated FB for longer than 30 days were included in the study. Medical records and radiological and bronchoscopic findings of the subjects were investigated from the hospital information database system.RESULTS: Of the 255 patients with FBA, 17.6% (<i>N =</i> 45) were diagnosed late. The mean age was 53 y; 28% were female, and 60% of the subjects had a history of ever smoking. The estimated residence time of the FB in the bronchial system was 22.8 months. The most common complaints were cough and shortness of breath. Forty-two percent of the aspirated FBs were organic material. FB artifact could be observed in 6.7% of posteroanterior chest radiographs and 65% of thorax computed tomography (CT) scans. Rigid bronchoscopy had been primarily preferred as therapeutic interventional procedure. It was also found that the artifact most frequently resided in the right bronchial system and was most commonly found in the right lower lobe, while granulation tissue was formed in 85% of the subjects.CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study demonstrate that subjects tended to forget the FBA, leading to insidious respiratory system symptoms, with recurrent infections. In cases with an endobronchial mass lesion image on thorax CT, clinicians should consider the possibility of FBA. Delayed diagnosis of both organic and inorganic FB may cause granulation tissue.

Abstract:Background: The presence of a foreign body in the airways is a life-threatening condition and thus a medical emergency that requires timely diagnosis and treatment. If not recognized, it can lead to a number of serious complications. It is of the utmost importance to raise public awareness and educate parents and other caregivers on all aspects of this topic. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study aimed to investigate parental awareness of the dangers of foreign body aspiration. To determine the current level of knowledge of the parents, a 14- question questionnaire was designed and filled out by parents of children under 5 years of age referred for their regular check- ups. Results: The results show that majority of parents know that inhaling a foreign body is a potentially life-threatening condition and recognize which objects have a potential to cause foreign body aspiration. 36.9% of respondents said they knew what the symptoms of foreign body aspiration were, however only 15.6% offered a complete answer. 59.6% of the respondents could not specify the right course of action in case FBA occurred. 2% responded accurately. No statistically significant correlation was found between the number of children in the family nor the age and the sex of the parents and the level of knowledge about the aspiration of foreign bodies. Conclusion: This study indicates that parents are insufficiently informed on recognizing foreign body aspiration symtoms as well as providing first aid. Media-assisted campaigns and the internet are potential sources of easily accessible educational material.
Presence of Asian House Gecko Hemidactylus frenatus across an urban gradient in Brisbane: influence of habitat and potential for impact on native gecko species

Abstract:The Asian House Gecko Hemidactylus frenatus is an internationally significant invasive reptile which has spread rapidly though the Pacific and elsewhere and has been implicated in the decline and extinction of a number of native gecko species. Although present in Darwin for some time, the species has only recently become widespread in the Brisbane region. We investigated the density and distribution of this and two native house-dwelling geckos in urban, suburban and bushland environments within Brisbane. The spatially clumped insect resources associated with external light sources were effectively utilised by both urban and suburban populations of Asian House Geckos, suggesting likely competitive interactions between the species on structures where the species co-existed. At this time, there is no evidence of the introduced species living away from buildings in the Brisbane region.

Abstract:Background: Healthcare professionals are required to work effectively together to deliver the best healthcare services. Without awareness of other healthcare professionals' roles and responsibilities, interprofessional practice (IPP) cannot be optimally achieved. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate healthcare professionals' awareness of audiology and speech-language pathology (SLP) services in Saudi Arabia. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study consisted of two parts. The content of a 20-item paper questionnaire was firstly validated. The full-scale study addressed the aim through distributing questionnaire items among potential participants. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used. Results: A total of 403 participants completed the questionnaires for the main study. Most of the participants were Saudi citizens (84.1%), aged 18 years - 40 years (84.8%) years, and lived in Riyadh region (76.2%). Allied health professionals (40.2%), physicians (22.6%), nursing (15.4%) and dentistry (11.2%) were the main group of participants working mainly at governmental hospitals (69.2%). Of the total participants, 92.6% and 95.3% reported being fully aware of the services provided by audiologists and SLPs, respectively. No statistically significant association between the specialty of participants and their familiarity with the scope of practice for SLPs and audiologists was determined. Conclusion: Our study examined healthcare professionals' awareness of audiology and SLP services and revealed a high level of awareness.Contribution: The existed level of awareness is expected to facilitate IPP and enhance the quality of care. Still, awareness campaigns about audiology and SLP services are needed to address the existing lack of knowledge among some healthcare professionals.
