Abstract:Harnessing the redox potential of biochar to activate airborne O2 for contaminant removal is challenging. In this study, ferrihydrite (Fh) modified the boron (B), nitrogen (N) co-doped biochars (BCs) composites (Fh/B(n)NC) were developed for enhancing the degradation of a model pollutant, tetracycline (TC), merely by airborne O2. Fh/B(3)NC showed excellent O2 activation activity for efficient TC degradation with a apparent TC degradation rate of 5.54, 6.88, and 22.15 times that of B(3)NC, Fh, and raw BCs, respectively, where 1O2 and H2O2 were identified as the dominant ROS for TC degradation. The B incorporation into the carbon lattice of Fh/B(3)NC promoted the generation of electron donors, sp2 C and the reductive B species, hence boosting Fe(III) reduction and 1O2 generation. O2 adsorption was enhanced due to the positively charged adsorption sites (C-B+and NC+). And 1O2 was generated via Fe(II) catalyzed low-efficient successive one-electron transfer (O2 → O2·− → 1O2, H2O2), as well as biochar catalyzed high-efficient two-electron transfer (O2 → H2O2 → 1O2) that does not involve .O2− as the intermediate. Moreover, Fh/B, N co-doped biochar showed a wide pH range, remarkable anti-interference capabilities, and effective detoxification. These findings shed new light on the development of environmentally benign BCs materials capable of degradading organic pollutants.

Abstract:The remediation of combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics in an aqueous environment remains challenging. Through magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersion followed by sulfonation modification, we report a novel bifunctional biochar-based composite (labeled Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H) for simultaneous removal of arsenite (As(III)) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Batch experiments in single-solute systems show that Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H exhibits faster kinetic and higher adsorption capacity than raw biochar, Fe3O4, and magnetite-dispersed biochar (Fe3O4@BC), thus leading to enhanced removal efficiency for either As(III) or TC. More notably, Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H can simultaneously remove above 85% of As(III) and TC compared with less than 50% removal of As(III) and TC by biochar, Fe3O4, and Fe3O4@BC. Combining the spectroscopic analyses, the co-removal process of As(III) and TC indicates a unique mechanism with two-stage reactions, which involves As(III) redox transformation in the first stage and TC adsorption in the second stage. This study proposes a new strategy to design biochar-based composites for the decontamination of As(III) and TC. Overall, the excellent performance and stability of Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H show its substantial potential as a low-cost, highly efficient, and eco-friendly material for the remediation of combined pollution in water.

Abstract:Textile effluents pose a massive threat to the aquatic environment, so, sustainable approaches for environmentally friendly multifunctional remediation methods degradation are still a challenge. In this study, composites consisting of bismuth oxyhalide nanoparticles, specifically bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanoplatelets, and lignin-based biochar were synthesized following a one-step hydrolysis synthesis. The simultaneous photocatalytic and adsorptive remediation efficiency of the Biochar–BiOCl composites were studied for the removal of a benchmark azo anionic dye, methyl orange dye (MO). The influence of various parameters (such as catalyst dosage, initial dye concentration, and pH) on the photo-assisted removal was carried out and optimized using the Box–Behnken Design of RSM. The physicochemical properties of the nanomaterials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The maximum dye removal was observed at a catalyst dosage of 1.39 g/L, an initial dye concentration of 41.8 mg/L, and a pH of 3.15. The experiment performed under optimized conditions resulted in 100% degradation of the MO after 60 min of light exposure. The incorporation of activated biochar had a positive impact on the photocatalytic performance of the BiOCl photocatalyst for removing the MO due to favorable changes in the surface morphology, optical absorption, and specific surface area and hence the dispersion of the photo-active nanoparticles leading to more photocatalytic active sites. This study is within the frames of the design and development of green-oriented nanomaterials of low cost for advanced (waste)water treatment applications.

The application of apoptotic inhibitor in apoptotic pathways of MII stage porcine oocytes after vitrification.

Abstract:Apoptosis is one of the main drivers of the decline in developmental potential of porcine oocytes after vitrification. However, which apoptotic pathways are engaged after vitrification remains poorly understood. To distinguish among the possible apoptotic pathways induced by vitrification of MII stage porcine oocytes, this study detected activity and expression levels of several key proteins and genes in both the death receptor and mitochondrial pathways using in situ fluorescence staining and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) following the addition of specific inhibitors of either the death receptor or the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway (Z-IETD-FMK or Z-LEHD-FMK, respectively) into the incubation solution. Survival and parthenogenetic developmental ability were also examined. The results showed the following: (i) compared with the vitrified group, the activities of pan-caspase, caspase 3, caspase 8 and caspase 9 as well as the early apoptotic rate were significantly lower in the Z-IETD-FMK and Z-LEHD-FMK groups (p < .05); (ii) After vitrification, mitochondrial ΔΨm decreased from 1.33 for fresh oocytes to 0.90 for vitrified oocytes, while the addition of Z-IETD-FMK or Z-LEHD-FMK following vitrification increased mitochondrial ΔΨm to 1.09 and 1.05, respectively (p < .05); (iii) Relative expression levels of apoptotic-related genes from both the death receptor pathway (caspase 8 and TNF-α) and the mitochondrial pathway (caspase 9, Bcl-2 and CuZnSOD) changed substantially after the addition of Z-IETD-FMK or Z-LEHD-FMK into the incubation solution; (iv) Survival, cleavage and blastocyst rates were higher in the Z-IETH-FMK or Z-LEHD-FMK groups than in the vitrified group (p < .05). In summary, both the death receptor and the mitochondrial apoptotic pathways participate in the apoptosis of MII stage porcine oocytes after vitrification.

Abstract:Biochar-based catalysts derived from biomass waste are potential candidates for environmental protection and sustainable biorefineries, drawing great attention to the circular economy and carbon neutrality. To enlarge the removal capacity of biochar in wastewater treatment, biochar loaded with FeS and MgO (FeS/MgO-biochar) was prepared for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of RhB. In contrast with pure biochar, MgO and FeS modified biochar had better adsorption-photocatalytic activity, especially the coupling effect of FeS and MgO for promoting the removal efficiency of FeS/MgO-biochar. It's ascribed to the sufficient active sites at the junction interface among FeS, MgO, and S-doped biochar favoring RhB adsorption and electron capture. Notably, the charge carriers were efficiently separated and transferred at the heterojunction interface, enlarging solar light response and utilization. The influences of experimental parameters on the removal activity of biochar-based composites as well as the adsorption-photocatalytic mechanism were discussed. The optimal FeS/MgO-biochar could eliminate 99.13 % RhB within 120 min, while the photo-corrosion induced its declined removal efficiency to 95.87 % after fifth-cycle.

Abstract:We describe an operation support system (OSS) architecture for network element (NE) allocation in optical access networks (OANs). Deploying OAN elements to meet all customer demand would be very costly because access networks are extend in many directions. To reduce this cost, it would be necessary to only install enough NEs to meet the current demand, and to allocate suitable elements during the process of service delivery. Because OANs consist of several elements, it is also necessary to control the sequence of element allocation and re-allocation. Therefore, an allocation integration function to control the allocation processes is necessary, as well as functions for each NE allocation. We have developed an OSS architecture that meets these requirements. We have also determined the most efficient allocation process for allocating OAN elements.
One-step preparation of a novel graphitic biochar/Cu0/Fe3O4 composite using CO2-ambiance pyrolysis to activate peroxydisulfate for dye degradation

Abstract:Herein, a one-step co-pyrolysis protocol was adopted for the first time to prepare a novel pyrogenic carbon-Cu0/Fe3O4 heteroatoms (FCBC) in CO2 ambiance to discern the roles of each component in PDS activation. During co-pyrolysis, CO2 catalyzed formation of reducing gases by biomass which facilitated reductive transformation of Fe3+ and Cu2+ to Cu0 and Fe3O4, respectively. According to the analysis, the resulting metal (oxide) catalyzed graphitization of biocharand decomposition of volatile substances resulting in an unprecedented surface area (1240 m2/g). The resulting FCBC showed greater structural defects and less electrical impedance. Batch experiments indicated that Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation by FCBC (100%) was superior to Fe3O4 (50%) and Cu0/Fe3O4 (76.4%) in persulfate (PDS) system, which maintained reasonable efficiency (75.6%-63.6%) within three cycles. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) associated with RhB degradation was identified by an electron paramagnetic resonance and confirmed by scavenging experiments. RhB degradation invoked both (sulfate and dominantly hydroxyl) radical and non-radical (singlet oxygen, 1O2) pathways. Regarding FCBC, Cu0 can continuously react with Fe3+ in Fe3O4 to generate larger quantities of Fe2+, and both Cu0 and Fe2+ activated PDS to yield sulfate radicals which was quickly converted to hydroxyl radical. Besides, Cu0/Cu2+ could complex with PDS to form a metastable complex, which particularly contributed to 1O2 generation. These cascade reactions by FCBC were reinforced by carbonyl group of biochar and favorable electron transfer ability. This work highlighted a new approach to prepare a magnetic and environment-benign heterogonous catalyst to remove organic pollutants in water.

Selective electrophilic attack towards organic micropollutants with superior Fenton-like activity by biochar-supported cobalt single-atom catalyst

Abstract:The global shortage of freshwater and inadequate supply of clean water have necessitated the implementation of robust technologies for wastewater purification, and Fenton-like chemistry is a highly-promising approach. However, realizing the rapid Fenton-like chemistry for high-efficiency degradation of organic micropollutants (OMs) remains challenging. Herein, one novel system was constructed by a Co single-atom catalyst activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and the optimal system (SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS) achieved unprecedented catalytic performance towards a model OM [Iohexol (IOH)], i.e., almost 100% decay ratio in only 10 min (the observed rate constant: 0.444 min-1) with high electrophilic species 1O2 (singlet oxygen) generation. Theoretical calculations unveiled that Co-N4 sites preferred to adsorb the terminal-O of PMS (more negative adsorption energy than other O sites: -32.67 kcal/mol), promoting the oxidation of PMS to generate 1O2. Iodine (I)23 (0.1097), I24 (0.1154) and I25 (0.0898) on IOH with higher f- electrophilic values were thus identified as the main attack sites. Furthermore, 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing and quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis illustrated the environmentally-benign property of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2 and the tapering ecological risk during IOH degradation process. Significantly, this work comprehensively checked the competence of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS system for organics abatement in practical wastewater.
Fabrication of porous biochar supported Bi 2 MoO 6 photocatalyst for efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin in seawater under visible light irradiation: Mechanistic investigation and intermediates analysis

Abstract:Efficient separation of photocarriers is a critical approach for advancing high-performance photocatalyst systems to effectively remove environmental contaminants. In this investigation, a hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize composites of Bi 2 MoO 6 and porous biochar derived from banana peels (BPB). The samples underwent various characterization methods to assess their composition, morphology, and photoelectrochemical properties. The BPB/Bi 2 MoO 6 composite exhibited a synergistic adsorption and photocatalytic impact in eliminating the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) from pure water and seawater. The optimized BPB/Bi 2 MoO 6 sample displayed a significant degradation efficiency of 98.7 % for CIP after 90 min of visible-light exposure in pure water. In artificial seawater, the degradation efficiency for CIP remained high at 93.6 %, which was 12.2 times greater than that of pure Bi 2 MoO 6 . The study also explored the impact of various factors such as catalyst dosage, solution pH, and pollutant concentration on the photocatalytic performance of BPB/Bi 2 MoO 6 . Moreover, the catalyst exhibited enhanced efficiency in the adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of CIP within a continuous flow reaction system. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the composite's exceptional adsorption capacity, enhanced response to visible light, and efficient separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the BPB/Bi 2 MoO 6 photocatalyst displayed good stability and recyclability over five consecutive photodegradation cycles. Radical trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments verified that the degradation of CIP was mainly driven by •OH and h + radicals. A thorough investigation employing density functional theory (DFT), radical trapping and ESR tests, and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was conducted to elucidate the degradation mechanism and pathways. Furthermore, toxicity assessment software was utilized to illustrate the progressive reduction in toxicity of the intermediate products. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the role of biochar in enhancing the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and offers guidance for the future development of environmentally friendly photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation organic contaminant is considered as a promising approach to water purification and environmental remediation. The novel class of photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite with large specific surface area, abundant active sites, uniform and stable metal ions, and fast Fe2+/Fe3+ conversion rate is considered as potential catalysts. Herein, a highly efficient and sustainable photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite (FeNi@corncob-activated carbon (CCAC)) was prepared by confining FeNi nanoparticles in CCAC through a simple solvothermal and activated-carbonization method. The porous structure and a high specific surface area of CCAC would effectively disperse FeNi nanoparticles, causing a significantly enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic performance. The RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was 2.3 times higher than that of FeNi. After five cycles, RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was barely decreased, confirming that FeNi@CCAC had high cyclability and reproducibility. Moreover, the reaction mechanism was analyzed in-depth via photoelectrochemical and electron spin resonance characterization. The outstanding results can be attributed to the contribution of the active species ‧OH, ‧O2–, and h+ in photo-Fenton degradation of RhB. Notably, FeNi@CCAC also has excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance in sewage. Partially oxidized mackinawite/biochar for photo-Fenton organic contaminant removal: Synergistically improve interfacial electron transfer and H2O2 activation

Abstract:Immobilizing Fe-based nanoparticles on electron-rich biochar has becoming an attractive heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts (Fe/BC) for wastewater decontamination. However, the insufficient graphitization of biochar causing low electron transfer and by slow H2O2 activation limited its application. Herein, we firstly constructed FeS/biochar composite through all-solid molten salt method (Fe/MSBCs), which can provide strong polarization force and liquid reaction environment to improve carbonization. As expected, the obtained Fe/MSBCs exhibits high surface area and fast interfacial electron transfer between FeS and biochar. More importantly, the partially oxidized FeS (001) facet facilitate H2O2 adsorption and thermodynamically easily decomposition into •OH. Such a synergistic effect endowed them excellent photo-Fenton degradation performance for methyl orange (MO) with large kinetic rate constants (0.079 min-1) and high H2O2 utilization efficiency (95.9%). This study first demonstrated the critical regulatory role of molten salt method in iron-based biochar composites, which provide an alternative for H2O2 activator in water pollutant control.

Abstract:Biochar offers several advantages, including high carbon content, a large specific surface area, a well-developed pore structure, and excellent adsorption capabilities. It is extensively utilized in improving soil quality, remediating environmental pollution, and contributing to carbon sequestration and emission reduction. However, practical challenges such as the low bulk density of biochar, difficulties in solid-liquid separation, and the need to enhance its long-term effectiveness and stability persist. To address these issues, biochar composites with improved remediation efficiency for polluted environments have been developed by combining biochar with metal materials, photocatalysts, and clay minerals, garnering significant attention. This systematic review examines the preparation methods and applications of biochar-based composite materials in environmental pollution control, analyzes the mechanisms for removing organic pollutants, and discusses future research and development trends for biochar materials, aiming to provide new insights for the creation and practical use of high-efficiency biochar composites.

Abstract:In this work, Cu/Fe modified nitrogen self-doped cyanobacterial biochar was synthesized for the first time as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst to study its catalytic degradation ability of Methylene Blue (MB) organic dye. The prepared samples were characterized by SEM, BET, XRD, and so on. The effects of pyrolysis temperature, acid treatment, heat radiation source, H 2 O 2 concentration, initial pH, and catalyst dosage on the degradation of MB were systematically investigated. The results showed that the catalytic degradation of MB by CuFeXBC 400 catalyst was as high as 99.78% within 30 min under the optimum conditions. The catalytic degradation mechanism was derived based on quenching experiments and LC-MS. Cyanobacteria not only provided a carbon source as a biochar skeleton loaded with bimetals but also provided N source to promote Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ cycling in the Fenton reaction. In addition to its high catalytic activity, the catalyst can still reach 90% MB removal after five runs and calcination regeneration, which has good application prospects in the removal of organic pollutants from water.

Abstract:Biochar materials produced from biomass pyrolysis offer promising functionality as sustainable and eco-friendly catalysts for activating peroxides and persulfates to treat aqueous and soil contaminants. This review summarizes recent progress, mechanistic insights, and future research needs regarding multifaceted biochar catalyst systems for in-situ remediation. For water treatment, biochar composites with transition metals, metal oxides, advanced carbon materials and heteroatom dopants have shown excellent activity for contaminant mineralization. Over 90–100% removal was achieved for dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and hydrocarbons through redox, Fenton-like, sonocatalytic and photocatalytic pathways. In soil, amendments with tailored biochars reduced bioavailability and stimulated biotic/abiotic degradation of organics like PAHs and phthalates. Over 80–90% of phenanthrene, petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals were remediated via immobilization, electron transfer to pollutants, and activation of peroxides. Spectroscopic evidence suggests generation of reactive radicals along with direct electron transfer contributes appreciably. However, large-scale field testing is required to evaluate technological viability and environmental impacts. Overall, creative integration of green chemistry with remediation goals positions functionalized biochar catalysts well to address pressing soil and water pollution while advancing sustainability.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation technology based on persulfate can efficiently remove trace pollutants in water, but there are problems with poor electronic cycling efficiency and metal leaching. In this work, we successfully fabricated in-situ nitrogen doped biochar composite material Fe 3 C/C by chelating Fe 2+ ions with chitosan and carbonizing the precursor. The main active component of Fe 3 C/C was Fe 3 C, and nitrogen doping and biochar structure promoted the cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . The catalyst Fe 3 C/C exhibits excellent synergistic "adsorption-oxidation" ability, and the removal efficiency of sulfonamide (SA) can reach 80 % (k = 0.1793 min −1 ). The degradation kinetics, free radical chemistry, and characterization were combined to investigate the synergistic effect of Fe 3 C and carbon substrate on the generation of persistent free radicals. Fe 3 C/C is not only an electron donor, but also an electron acceptor and electron transfer carrier. In the Fe 3 C/C/PMS system, free radical and non-free radical pathways coexist, which makes it suitable for the treatment of various pollutants in complex water matrices. The contribution of defects and pyrrole nitrogen constitutes the synergistic degradation process of free and non-free radicals. In addition, Fe 3 C/C-3 showed good continuous processing ability and less iron dissolution in the packed column experiment. This work provides theoretical support and technical means for the efficient removal of trace pollutants in water by biochar-based advanced oxidation technology.

Abstract:In the era of rapid global industrialization, the problem of water pollution around the world has become an increasingly serious and urgent problem. Photo-Fenton catalysis has attracted extensive research as a simple, efficient, and clean method. In the process of exploring and researching photo-Fenton catalysts, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) has been studied for its many advantages, such as good lightstability, wide range of visible light utilization, magnetic recyclability, price-friendliness, and light-corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the flexible positions and valence changes of metal cations in the CoFe2O4 spinel structure endow it with abundant surface active sites and high Fenton catalytic activity. However, nanoscale particles and relatively narrow band gaps easily lead to large-scale agglomeration of self-particles and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers. These are the main obstacles for pure CoFe2O4 nanocatalysts to exert their high catalytic activity. To better play the role of CoFe2O4 nanomaterials in organic wastewater treatment, this paper summarizes the main problems faced by the current photo-Fenton catalysis technology and introduces the basic properties, degradation mechanism, and preparation methods of CoFe2O4. More importantly, several effective and reliable modification strategies to enhance catalytic performance are also discussed, mainly including morphology control, element doping, defect introduction, and coupled composites, aiming to improve the design of CoFe2O4 photo-Fenton catalysts. This will lay the foundation for making full use of the excellent properties of CoFe2O4 catalysts in the field of organic wastewater treatment in the future.

Abstract:Photo-induced charge carrier mobility, light absorption ability and micro-morphology of photocatalyst are vital aspects affecting photocatalytic activity. In this work, p-n junction ZnIn2S4/CoFe2O4 and biochar (ZIS/CFO/BC) were combined via a two-step hydro-& solvent-thermal method. To study the morphology, crystal phase, surface condition and optical property of related photocatalytic samples, a series of characterization methods were carried out: XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS and so on. The composite exhibited enhanced charge carrier separation, excellent light absorption intensity and hierarchical porous morphology. The ternary ZIS/CFO/BC composite showed good photodegradation efficiency (96.9 %) and TOC removal percentage (83.0 %) towards ciprofloxacin under simulated sunlight, as well as superior recyclability and stability after six cycles. The introduction of biochar prevented the agglomeration of photocatalytic nanoparticles, and promoted charge carrier mobility. The synergy between good adsorption of biochar and photocatalytic activity of p-n junction greatly improved pho-todegradation performance. Superoxide (O2-) radical played a major role during photodegradation. The effects of coexisting anions (Cl-, NO3-, CO32-) and humic acid were investigated. Furthermore, the photodegradation pathway was studied and possible mechanism was proposed. This study provides new insights into the fabri-cation of recyclable photocatalyst with high potential for environmental purification.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have been considered as a promising approach for degrading organic pollutants. Herein, CoFe 2 O 4 anchored on attapulgite-biochar composites (CoFe 2 O 4 @ATP–BC) were synthesized by a sol-gel co-pyrolysis method and showed excellent catalytic performance, reusability and stability in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The effects of PMS concentration, catalyst dosage, temperature, initial pH, NOM and inorganic ions on the removal of RhB were investigated. The radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurement confirmed that 1 O 2 , O 2 ∙− and surface-bound ∙OH and SO 4 ∙− were major reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the RhB degradation by CoFe 2 O 4 @ATP–BC/PMS system, indicating that radical and non-radical degradation pathways were both involved. The possible catalytic mechanism of PMS by CoFe 2 O 4 @ATP–BC was proposed including the interface reaction and bulk reaction. The main degradation intermediates were identified by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and three possible degradation pathways of RhB were deduced accordingly. In general, the CoFe 2 O 4 @ATP–BC/PMS system provided fundamentals of theoretical and applied research to further develop supported bimetallic oxides for advanced oxidation treatment of organic wastewater.

Abstract:In present work, a novel catalyst of cobalt supported on silica-composited biochar () derived from fly ash and agricultural waste was synthesized. A series of characterizations confirmed that Co 3 O 4 and Al/Si–O compounds were successfully embedded on the surface of biochar, which triggered superior catalytic activity for PMS activation towards phenol degradation. Particularly, the /PMS system could completely degrade phenol in the wide pH range, and was almost unaffected by environmental factors including humic acid (HA), H 2 PO 4 − , HCO 3 − , Cl − , and NO 3 − . Further quenching experiment and EPR analysis proved that both radical (SO 4 ·- , ·OH, O 2 ·- ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways were involved in the catalytic reaction system, and the excellent PMS activation was attributed to the electron pair cycling of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and the active sites provided by Si–O–O and Si/Al–O bonds on the catalyst surface. Meanwhile, the carbon shell effectively inhibited the leaching of metal ions, enabling the catalyst to maintain excellent catalytic activity after four cycles. Finally, biological acute toxicity assay demonstrated that the toxicity of phenol could be significantly reduced after being treated by /PMS. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for solid waste valorization and a feasible methodology for green and efficient treatment of refractory organic pollutants in water environment.

Abstract:Metformin (MET) is frequently detected in aquatic environments, with its presence posing potential risks to flora and fauna. To enhance the redox cycling efficiency of Fe2+/Fe3+ in the Fenton reaction, a catalyst WSF@BC was synthesized by innovatively loading WS2 and iron oxides onto reed biochar to construct a novel non-homogeneous Fenton-like system for the degradation of MET in wastewater. This study investigated various parameters such as initial pH, peroxymonosulfate dosage, and catalyst dosage to determine their effects on the degradation efficiency. The results indicated that MET was degraded by 85.1 % within 30 min. The synergistic effect of WS2 and FeOx distinctly improved the removal efficiency of MET in this system, whereby SO4 − dominated the rapid degradation of MET, as demonstrated by radical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) studies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Frontier orbital theory calculations and intermediate product analyses revealed that the main reaction sites for MET degradation were CN and CN, resulting in reduced toxicity of degradation products. Three potential degradation pathways of MET via denitrification, amino oxidation, and hydroxylation were proposed by theoretical predictions and LC-MS/MS analysis. Additionally, characterization and recycling outcomes demonstrated excellent stability and reusability of the catalyst. This research highlights the significant application value of novel non-homogeneous catalysts for MET degradation in Fenton-like systems and provides theoretical support for achieving complete mineralization of MET.
