Abstract:Light confinement in nanostructures produces an enhanced light–matter interaction that enables a vast range of applications including single-photon sources, nanolasers and nanosensors. In particular, nanocavity-confined polaritons display a strongly enhanced light–matter interaction in the infrared regime. This interaction could be further boosted if polaritonic modes were moulded to form whispering-gallery modes; but scattering losses within nanocavities have so far prevented their observation. Here, we show that hexagonal BN nanotubes act as an atomically smooth nanocavity that can sustain phonon-polariton whispering-gallery modes, owing to their intrinsic hyperbolic dispersion and low scattering losses. Hyperbolic whispering-gallery phonon polaritons on BN nanotubes of ～4 nm radius (sidewall of six atomic layers) are characterized by an ultrasmall nanocavity mode volume ( V m ≈ 10 –10 λ 0 3 at an optical wavelength λ 0 ≈ 6.4 μm) and a Purcell factor ( Q / V m ) as high as 10 12 . We posit that BN nanotubes could become an important material platform for the realization of one-dimensional, ultrastrong light–matter interactions, with exciting implications for compact photonic devices.
Phonon Polaritons in Boron Nitride Nanotube Homojunctions

Abstract:With the development of information technology,there is an increasingly urgent demand for nanophotonic integrated circuits with on-chip optical information processing capabilities.Polaritons supported in two-dimensional materials can break through the optical diffraction limit,enabling the confinement of light fields at the nanoscale and offering the potential to construct nanophotonic integrated circuits.For instance,single atomic layer materials such as graphene and boron nitride support plasmon and hyperbolic phonon polaritons,which have been demonstrated to compress wavelengths of light by over 100 times.One-dimensional nanotube structures can be considered as seamlessly rolled-up versions of two-dimensional materials,providing a naturally occurring one-dimensional nano-waveguide structure that can support highly confined polaritons. Interface coupling plays a crucial role in the transmission and modulation of optical signals.For example,effective interface coupling can significantly reduce the insertion loss of waveguide couplers,thereby enhancing the efficiency of optical signal transmission.Additionally,interface coupling serves as an important method for optical signal modulation,allowing for the implementation of various efficient optical modulators.One-dimensional boron nitride nanotube homojunctions can act as a coupling interface,featuring a structure combined with nanotubes of different outer diameters on either side of the homojunctions that support different waveguide modes. Studying the interfaces coupling effects at the boron nitride nanotube homojunction is instrumental in comprehending the propagation and loss mechanisms of light within boron nitride nanotubes.This study employs scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM)with electron energy loss spectroscopy(EELS)and numerical simulations to investigate phonon polaritons in one-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride nanotube homojunctions.Our simulations accurately reproduce experimental EELS signals,revealing the presence of both waveguide modes along the tube axis and resonant whispering-gallery modes along the tube's sidewall within the homojunction.At the interface,the transmission of waveguide modes along the tube axis is proportional to wave vector matching,decreasing as the frequency rises.Moreover,by manipulating the dimensions of the nanotubes at both ends,we can modulate the waveguide mode's transmission between 0％and 100％.In addition,different hyperbolic whispering-gallery modes supported by boron nitride nanotubes of varying diameters can smoothly transition within a 100-nanometer range at the interface. In conclusion,this paper combines the use of EELS in STEM and computational simulations to investigate the interface coupling in boron nitride nanotube homojunctions of one-dimensional waveguide modes and whispering-gallery modes of phonon polaritons.The study uncovers a direct proportionality between the transmission of one-dimensional waveguide modes at the homojunction interface and the wave vector matching on both sides of the waveguide.Additionally,the modulation of the one-dimensional waveguide mode's transmission is achievable by adjusting the nanotube sizes on both ends of the interface.Meanwhile,the homojunction has minimal impact on the whispering-gallery modes within the boron nitride nanotube.This research contributes to a deeper comprehension of phonon polariton waveguides in one-dimensional boron nitride nanotube homojunctions,advancing the field of nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:The inherent crystal anisotropy of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) sustains naturally hyperbolic phonon polaritons, i.e. polaritons that can propagate with very large wavevectors within the material volume, thereby enabling optical confinement to exceedingly small dimensions. Indeed, previous research has shown that nanometer-scale truncated nanocone hBN cavities, with deep subwavelength dimensions, support three-dimensionally confined optical modes in the mid-infrared. Due to optical selection rules, only a few of many such modes predicted theoretically have been observed experimentally via far-field reflection and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy. The Photothermal induced resonance (PTIR) technique probes optical and vibrational resonances overcoming weak far-field emission by leveraging an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe to transduce local sample expansion due to light absorption. Here we show that PTIR enables the direct observation of previously unobserved, dark hyperbolic modes of hBN nanostructures. Leveraging these optical modes could yield a new degree of control over the electromagnetic near-field concentration, polarization and angular momentum in nanophotonic applications.

Abstract:The hyperbolic phonon polariton (HPhP) is an emerging physical concept linked to many intriguing phenomena and has been explored in artificial metamaterial structures and a few single-phase natural materials [1]. Owing to its anisotropic dielectric function, two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) can generate tunable HPhPs with low loss and long propagation length in different Reststrahlen bands [2]. However, the study of 1D propagating HPhPs, which are more promising for integrated optical circuits, is still absent in the h -BN nanostructures. Using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), we observe an abnormal HPhPs confined to within about 10 nm at the edge of folded h -BN flakes, which undergo an energy blue-shift up to 1.4 meV. Thanks to the atomic resolution capability of aberration-corrected STEM (AC-STEM), our approach can reveal nanoscale features of this confined HPhPs, which is inaccessible to optical methods due to their spatial resolution limitation.
Approaching the Purcell factor limit with whispering-gallery hyperbolic phonon polaritons in hBN nanotubes

Abstract: Enhanced light-matter interaction at the nanoscale is pivotal in the foundation of nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and nanophotonics, which are essential for a vast range of applications including single-photon sources, nanolasers, and nanosensors. In this context, the combination of strongly confined polaritons and low-loss nanocavities provides a promising way to enhance light-matter interaction, thus giving rise to a high density of optical states, as quantified by the so-called Purcell factor - the ratio of the decay rate of an optical quantum emitter to its value in free space. Here, we exploit whispering-gallery hyperbolic-phonon-polariton (WG-HPhP) modes in hBN nanotubes (BNNTs) to demonstrate record-high Purcell factors (~10^12) driven by the deep-subwavelength confinement of phonon polaritons and the low intrinsic losses in these atomically smooth nanocavities. Furthermore, the measured Purcell factor increases with decreasing BNNT radius down to 5 nm, a result that extrapolates to ~10^14 in a single-walled BNNT. Our study supports WG-HPhP modes in one-dimensional nanotubes as a powerful platform for investigating ultrastrong light-matter interactions, which open exciting perspectives for applications in single-molecular sensors and nanolasers.

Abstract:Multiple sound reflections from room materials and a listener's head induce slight spectral modifications of sounds. This coloration depends on the listener and source positions, and on the room itself. This study investigated whether coloration could help segregate competing sources. Obligatory streaming was evaluated for diotic speech-shaped noises using a rhythmic discrimination task. Thresholds for detecting anisochrony were always significantly higher when stimuli differed in spectrum. The tested differences corresponded to three spatial configurations involving different levels of head and room coloration. These results suggest that, despite the generally deleterious effects of reverberation on speech intelligibility, coloration could favor source segregation.

Abstract:The anisotropy of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) gives rise to hyperbolic phonon-polaritons (HPhPs), notable for their volumetric frequency-dependent propagation and strong confinement. For frustum (truncated nanocone) structures, theory predicts five, high-order HPhPs, sets, but only one set was observed previously with far-field reflectance and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy. In contrast, the photothermal induced resonance (PTIR) technique has recently permitted sampling of the full HPhP dispersion and observing such elusive predicted modes; however, the mechanism underlying PTIR sensitivity to these weakly-scattering modes, while critical to their understanding, has not yet been clarified. Here, by comparing conventional contact- and newly developed tapping-mode PTIR, we show that the PTIR sensitivity to those weakly-scattering, high-Q (up to ≈280) modes is, contrary to a previous hypothesis, unrelated to the probe operation (contact or tapping) and is instead linked to PTIR ability to detect tip-launched dark, volumetrically-confined polaritons, rather than nanostructure-launched HPhPs modes observed by other techniques. Furthermore, we show that in contrast with plasmons and surface phonon-polaritons, whose Q-factors and optical cross-sections are typically degraded by the proximity of other nanostructures, the high-Q HPhP resonances are preserved even in high-density hBN frustum arrays, which is useful in sensing and quantum emission applications.
Surface and Volume Phonon Polaritons in a Uniaxial Hyperbolic Material: Optic Axis Parallel Versus Perpendicular to the Surface

Abstract:Uniaxial hyperbolic materials enable excitation of phonon polaritons with utrahigh wavevectors that have been shown to be promising for many optical and thermal radiative applications and thus have attracted much attention recently. However, the characteristics of surface and volume phonon polaritons excited with uniaxial hyperbolic materials that exhibit in-plane anisotropy or in-plane isotropy have not been discussed thoroughly and some issues have so far remained elusive. In this paper, we conducted a comprehensive investigation on surface and volume phonon polaritons in a bulk or a thin slab of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We clarified the excitation, characteristics and topology of surface and volume phonon polaritons in such a uniaxial hyperbolic material. In particular, we showed that hyperbolic surface phonon polaritons (HSPhPs) can exist in the Type I hyperbolic band of hBN with confined wavevectors when the optic axis (OA) is parallel to the surface. For a thin hBN slab, we revealed a split of HSPhPs and a smooth transition between HSPhPs and HVPhPs in the Type II hyperbolic band. Furthermore, we also identified non-Dyakonov surface phonon polaritons excited without evanescent ordinary waves. These findings may extend the understanding of phonon polaritons in hyperbolic materials and offer new theoretical guidance for the design of infrared optical devices with hyperbolic materials.
Curving H-Bn Thin Films Can Create Extra Phonon Polariton Modes.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin films support volume-confined phonon polariton modes within the bulk material as well as surface-confined modes at the edges of thin films. In this Letter, we theoretically investigate the phonon polaritons in curved h-BN thin films. One-dimensional guided phonon polariton modes are found, which are caused by the curved geometry and do not exist in extended flat films. These modes are guided along a specific direction with relatively low propagation losses. So far, one-dimensional guided phonon polariton modes have only been proposed in nanowire and nanoribbon structures. Our study offers another way with the advantage of keeping the h-BN film intact, which can avoid huge scattering losses due to the structural defects. These investigations may offer an easy and robust approach toward phonon-polariton-based nanophotonic circuitry.

Abstract:Compressing light into nanocavities substantially enhances light–matter interactions, which has been a major driver for nanostructured materials research. However, extreme confinement generally comes at the cost of absorption and low resonator quality factors. Here we suggest an alternative optical multimodal confinement mechanism, unlocking the potential of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in isotopically pure hexagonal boron nitride. We produce deep-subwavelength cavities and demonstrate several orders of magnitude improvement in confinement, with estimated Purcell factors exceeding 10 8 and quality factors in the 50–480 range, values approaching the intrinsic quality factor of hexagonal boron nitride polaritons. Intriguingly, the quality factors we obtain exceed the maximum predicted by impedance-mismatch considerations, indicating that confinement is boosted by higher-order modes. We expect that our multimodal approach to nanoscale polariton manipulation will have far-reaching implications for ultrastrong light–matter interactions, mid-infrared nonlinear optics and nanoscale sensors.

Nanofocusing of Hyperbolic Phonon-Polaritons in a Tapered Boron Nitride Slab

Abstract:Nanofocusing of light offers new technological opportunities for the delivery and manipulation of electromagnetic fields at sub-diffraction limited length scales. Here, we show that hyperbolic phonon polarity,HPP, modes in the mid infrared as supported by a hexagonal boron nitride, h-BN, slab can be nanofocused (i.e. both field enhanced and wavelength compressed) by propagation along a vertical taper. Via numerical simulations, we demonstrate that field enhancement factors of 90, for steep tapers, and wavelength compression of more than an order of magnitude for adiabatic tapers, can be expected. Employing scatteringtype scanning near field optical microscopy ,s SNOM, we provide for the first time proof of principle experimental evidence of a significant HPP wavelength compression. We expect these functionalities to provide diverse applications, from biosensing and non-linear optics to optical circuitry.

Tamm phonon-polaritons triggered in hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride

Abstract:Tamm phonon polaritons (TPhPs) have been recently predicted and experimentally observed for the first time in silicon carbide (SiC) film, allowing for enhanced light-matter interactions and new opportunities for manipulating light at the micro- and nano-scale. Hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a two-dimensional Van der Waals crystal, also supports phonon polaritons. However, TPhPs in hBN have not been systematically studied yet. In this paper, we theoretically investigate TPhPs triggered in the structure based on one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) and hyperbolic material hBN film. It is found that the structure PC/spacer/semi-infinite hBN film can form TPhPs in the Type-II hyperbolic band, but not in the Type-I hyperbolic band. This phenomenon of selective excitation is attributed to the negative permittivity of hBN in the plane, rather than its out-of-plane permittivity. Importantly, TPhPs are sensitive to the thickness of the spacer, which can be regulated flexibly by changing the thickness. In addition, the selective excitation of TPhPs for hyperbolic bands in the configuration of finite hBN/spacer/PC is demonstrated using the same approach. It can be found that the absorption can reach 0.9 at the wavelength of 7.23 μm regardless of transverse electric or transverse magnetic waves, and the observed resonance has high quality factor of 181. This work provides a theoretical basis for TPhPs based on hyperbolic materials and has potential applications in highly sensitive sensors and selective absorbers.

Direct observation of highly confined phonon polaritons in suspended monolayer hexagonal boron nitride

Abstract:Phonon polaritons enable light confinement at deep subwavelength scales, with potential technological applications, such as subdiffraction imaging, sensing and engineering of spontaneous emission. However, the trade-off between the degree of confinement and the excitation efficiency of phonon polaritons prevents direct observation of these modes in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), where they are expected to reach ultrahigh confinement. Here, we use monochromatic electron energy-loss spectroscopy (about 7.5 meV energy resolution) in a scanning transmission electron microscope to measure phonon polaritons in monolayer h-BN, directly demonstrating the existence of these modes as the phonon Reststrahlen band (RS) disappears. We find phonon polaritons in monolayer h-BN to exhibit high confinement (>487 times smaller wavelength than that of light in free space) and ultraslow group velocity down to about 10<sup>−5</sup><i>c</i>. The large momentum compensation provided by electron beams additionally allows us to excite phonon polaritons over nearly the entire RS band of multilayer h-BN. These results open up a broad range of opportunities for the engineering of metasurfaces and strongly enhanced light–matter interactions.

Phonon Polaritons in Cylindrically Curved H-Bn

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride supports phonon polaritons in its two Reststrahlen bands. In this paper, we investigate phonon polaritons in cylindrically curved hexagonal boron nitride thin films. The phonon polariton modes in such structure carry orbital angular momentums depending on its azimuthal index. For extremely small-size structures, high order polariton modes show cutoff behaviors; while, for large-size ones, modes with low azimuthal indexes are nearly degenerate, showing similar mode effective indexes. In dimer structures, phonon polariton modes in the neighboring structures are coupled, creating hybrid modes; gap phonon polaritons arise due to such coupling. For large-size dimers, multiple gap phonon polariton modes have been found. Then, cylindrically curved hexagonal boron nitride thin film is placed on a substrate, which also leads to the emergence of multiple gap phonon polariton modes near the touching point. In the end, we vary the geometric parameters of the structures and give some discussions about the phonon polariton modes. Based on these investigations, we may say that the curvature can strongly affect the phonon polariton modes in h-BN thin films.

Abstract:During the early years of database management the contemporary wisdom was to store only â€˜useful data.â€™ In large part, this philosophy was encouraged because of the then-limited storage capacity offered by the prevailing technology. Then along came the microprocessor revolution, enormously expanding the scope of data storage. Subsequent advancement in information technology and recognition of potential business opportunities thereof, resulted in enormous expansion of data storage. Although the future is unknown and unpredictable, it often provides new business opportunities. Thus, new management strategies emerged which encouraged the massive accumulation of data and thus the advent of data warehousing. These massive data depositories are now providing both challenges and opportunities for strategic decision-making concerned with improving existing businesses and exploring new business opportunities. Data mining is an essential part of the process involved in locating relevant information from data warehouses for use in making such strategic decisions. Naturally, business leaders everywhere are willing to make investments in corporate data warehouses to enhance their access to information. The return on such investment is by no means guaranteed but all business activities include a certain amount of risk.

Abstract:Generation and manipulation of phonon polaritons are of paramount importance for understanding the interaction between an electromagnetic field and dielectric materials and furthering their application in mid-infrared optical communication. However, the formation of tunable one-dimensional phonon polaritons has been rarely realized in van der Waals layered structures. Here we report the discovery of curvature-induced phonon polaritons localized at the crease of folded hexagonal boron nitrides (h-BNs) with a few atomic layers using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Compared to bulk regions, the creased-localized signals undergo an abnormal blue-shift of 1.4 meV. First-principles calculations reveal that the energy shift arises from the optical phonon hardening in the curled region. Interestingly, the curvature-induced phonon polariton can also be controllably achieved via an electron-beam etching approach. This work opens an avenue of tailoring local electromagnetic response and creating unique phonon polariton modes in van der Waals layered materials for diverse applications.
Phonon-Enhanced Nonlinearities in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Abstract:We investigate optical nonlinearities that are induced and enhanced due to the strong phonon resonance in hexagonal boron nitride. We predict and observe large sub-picosecond duration signals due to four-wave mixing (FWM) during resonant excitation. The resulting FWM signal allows for time-resolved observation of the crystal motion. In addition, we observe enhancements of third-harmonic generation with resonant pumping at the hBN transverse optical phonon. Phonon-induced nonlinear enhancements are also predicted to yield large increases in high-harmonic efficiencies.

High quality nanocavities through multimodal confinement of hyperbolic polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride

Abstract:A conventional optical cavity supports modes which are confined because they are unable to leak out of the cavity. Bound state in continuum (BIC) cavities are an unconventional alternative, where light can leak out, but is confined by multimodal destructive interference. BICs are a general wave phenomenon, of particular interest to optics, but BICs and multimodal interference have never been demonstrated at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate the first nanophotonic cavities based on BIC-like multimodal interference. This novel confinement mechanism for deep sub-wavelength light shows orders of magnitude improvement in several confinement metrics. Specifically, we obtain cavity volumes below 100x100x3nm^3 with quality factors about 100, with extreme cases having 23x23x3nm^3 volumes or quality factors above 400. Key to our approach, is the use of pristine crystalline hyperbolic dispersion media (HyM) which can support large momentum excitations with relatively low losses. Making a HyM cavity is complicated by the additional modes that appear in a HyM. Ordinarily, these serve as additional channels for leakage, reducing cavity performance. But, in our experiments, we find a BIC-like cavity confinement enhancement effect, which is intimately related to the ray-like nature of HyM excitations. In fact, the quality factors of our cavities exceed the maximum that is possible in the absence of higher order modes. The alliance of HyM with BICs in our work yields a radically novel way to confine light and is expected to have far reaching consequences wherever strong optical confinement is utilized, from ultra-strong light-matter interactions, to mid-IR nonlinear optics and a range of sensing applications.

Surface-confined Edge Phonon Polaritons in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Thin Films and Nanoribbons.

Abstract:In this paper, we point out that the phonon polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride may not have to be volume-confined. Surface-confined phonon polaritons can occur at the edges of ultra-thin boron nitride films. Based on numerical calculations, we have investigated the effective indexes of such phonon polariton modes, and found that these modes normally have much lower losses than the volume-confined ones. Surface-confined phonon polaritons in boron nitride nanoribbons are also investigated that can be seen as the coupling of the phonon polariton modes at two edges of the nanoribbon, and the corresponding losses can be further reduced. Then, we give a deep discussion on the volume-confined and surface-confined phonon polaritons. In the end, the effects of defects and substrates on such modes are presented. The proposed low-loss surface-confined phonon polaritons may be useful in phonon polariton based photonic devices.

Abstract:Polar van der Waals (vdW) crystals, composed of atomic layers held together by vdW forces, can host phonon polaritons-quasiparticles arising from the interaction between photons in free-space light and lattice vibrations in polar materials. These crystals offer advantages such as easy fabrication, low Ohmic loss, and optical confinement. Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), known for having hyperbolicity in the mid-infrared range, has been used to explore multiple modes with high optical confinement. This opens possibilities for practical polaritonic nanodevices with subdiffractional resolution. However, polariton waves still face exposure to the surrounding environment, leading to significant energy losses. In this work, we propose a simple approach to inducing a hyperbolic phonon polariton (HPhP) waveguide in hBN by incorporating a low dielectric medium, ZrS2. The low dielectric medium serves a dual purpose-it acts as a pathway for polariton propagation, while inducing high optical confinement. We establish the criteria for the HPhP waveguide in vdW heterostructures with various thicknesses of ZrS2 through scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and by conducting numerical electromagnetic simulations. Our work presents a feasible and straightforward method for developing practical nanophotonic devices with low optical loss and high confinement, with potential applications such as energy transfer, nano-optical integrated circuits, light trapping, etc.
